It’s something that many parents in the Union County Public School system hoped they would never hear again: redistricting is coming by 2025. That’s the warning Dr. Jerome McKibben, a senior demographer at McKibben Demographic Research, gave the Union
County Board of Education at its Dec. 1 meeting. McKibben presents a population forecast report for the district every two years that helps predict future infrastructure needs. The information presented is a forecast, rather than a projection, based on what could happen as a result of future population dynamics. The report demonstrated that the population boom and migration to Union County would decline by 2019, due to less
young households and families migrating to Union County. The county will consist of more “empty nest” households, which refer to homes that no longer will produce more children. The child-rearing age range is between 20 and 28 years old. Most couples typically aren’t homeowners when they begin having children.
