10 restaurant chains missing from Union County

Dozens of restaurants can be found within a short drive of southern Mecklenburg and western Union counties, but sometimes our bellies growl for something different.

“Entrepreneur” recently released its 37th annual Franchise 500 rankings. While the region is home to many of the restaurants on the list, there are some cuisines still foreign to our palates.

Perhaps an entrepreneur or recent lottery winner reading this will choose to invest in bringing one of these concepts to the region.

Church’s Chicken

Church’s Chicken clucks in at 63rd on the Franchise 500, making it the highest concept missing in the area.

The restaurant has grown to more than 1,650 locations since hatching in 1952, with the closest one being on Eastway Drive.

The quick-service concept specializes in handbattered and double-breaded chicken. Aside from strips, sandwiches and biscuits, customers can find comfort in fried okra, corn, coleslaw and macaroni.

Church’s also has introduced lemon-seasoned butterfly shrimp.

Wingstop

“The Wing Experts” have high expectations, despite already opening more than 800 locations, including one in uptown Charlotte.

"We firmly believe that Wingstop is a unique brand in a category of one, and we continue to make progress towards our full potential of an estimated 2,500 domestic restaurants," CEO Charlie Morrison said March 3 upon the release of fourth quarter results.

Customers can order classic or boneless wings in various flavors, such as atomic, Cajun, Hawaiian lemon pepper, Louisiana rub and mango habanero.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop

Fuzzy's Taco Shop is one of the youngest concepts on the list, having been created in 2003 in Fort Worth, Texas. The fast-casual joint hasn't hit the Carolinas just yet, but three restaurants can be found in Georgia.

The menu includes a diverse selection of Baja tacos and jumbo burritos, with flavors such as tempura fish, shredded brisket and grilled shrimp.

Enchiladas, fajitas, quesadillas, sandwiches and breakfast items complement the menu.

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop

Capriotti's began in 1976 as a hub for turkey lovers. The restaurant still incorporates slowroasted, hand-pulled turkey into its sandwiches.

Capriotti's offers some interesting sandwiches, such as the The Bobbie. It comes with homemade turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing and mayo.

The Capastrami, Cole Turkey and Slaw Be Joe include Russian dressing and coleslaw.

The brand has locations in Virginia and Georgia, but has yet to enter the Carolinas.

Rosati’s Pizza

North Carolina is among the eight states you can find this Chicago-style pizza restaurant, but the only one is in Morrisville. The concept originated in 1964 based on traditions passed down from generations.

The Rosati's Monster offers nine ingredients, including sausage, pepperoni, ground beef, bacon and mushrooms. Hate pizza sauce? The Siciliana and Campagnola pizzas use olive oil instead.

Pizzas can come with stuffed and double dough crust.

Johnny Rockets

Johnny Rockets touts classic American food, like its original hamburger. The original features a never-frozen beef, iceberg lettuce, tomato, chopped onions, relish, pickle, mustard and mayo.

You also can find other burgers, as well as Philly cheese steak, chicken tenders, grilled chicken breast sandwich, grilled cheese, hot dog and salads.

Since the first restaurant opened in 1986 in Los Angeles, Johnny Rockets has shot up to more than 340 locations, including four in the Carolinas. The closest is in Greenville, S.C.

Blimpie’s Subs

While Subway is perennially ranked among the top 10 brands in the Franchise 500, concepts like Blimpie’s could benefit as the sandwich champ attempts to rebound from several rounds of bad publicity.

Blimpie’s touts itself as "America's Sub Shop," as well as bigger and better than competitors.

The signature Blimp consists of turkey, roast beef, proscuittini, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, sweet peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, pickle, onion, mayo, oil, vinegar and oregano.

Customers in the University City area of Charlotte also can buy subs, paninis and wraps.

Checkers & Rally’s

Checkers & Rally's bought a saucy full-page ad in USA Today after Burger King announced it would introduce hot dogs to the menu.

“So as Burger King shows their wiener in public for the very first time, we are thrilled to offer our delicious dog for less than half the price,” the ad taunted.

Seared and seasoned burgers are the specialty, with 14 items on the menu.

Checkers and Rally's opened as individual brands in the mid-1980s, but have opened more than 800 dual restaurants since 1999. None are in North Carolina.

The Tilted Kilt

The Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery is known for its wings and Tilted Kilt Girls. Sounds like Hooters, doesn’t it? The Titled Kilt is a throwback to English, Irish and Scottish pubs.

You can eat traditional pub grub, as well as seasonal items like the corned beef hash and eggs, One Shot Johnny Shepherd's Pie and Olde Dublin Irish Stew.

News Briefs Monroe Police respond to assault report at middle school MONROE – Monroe Police Department responded to a report of an assault at Monroe Middle School on March 3 at approximately 12:35 p.m. Officers were informed a juvenile student was assaulted by a staff member of the school, according Dayle Rush to the police department report. After an investigation by the police, Union County Public Schools and the district attorney’s office, a warrant was issued for Dayle Rust II, 53, for simple assault. Rust, a school psychologist with UCPS, turned himself in after learning of the charges. His court date is set for April 6.

Nonprofit, Sun Valley Starbucks present ‘Military Mondays’ MONROE – Nonprofit Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (LSSP) will help make legal assistance more readily available for veterans in Union County as part of its Starbucks Military Mondays program. The program hopes to serve communities of veterans who might not live near a legal services provider.

LSSP will help veterans, service members and their families living in Union County by hosting free monthly legal clinics at Sun Valley Starbucks. The next clinic will take place April 4, a Monday, from 1 to 3 p.m. The clinics will offer advice and referral information on civil legal issues impacting local veterans and military families, including disability compensation, survivors benefits, discharge upgrades, consumer law, tax issues and other non-criminal legal matters.

is part of a national effort to support service men and women.

Marvin to hold volunteer day MARVIN – The village of Marvin will hold a volunteer day at Marvin Efird Park on Saturday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are asked to assist with various projects at the park to help with readying trails, flower beds, open space and the playground for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. Everyone is welcome to volunteer and there will be jobs available for all age groups.

Indian Trail Curves holds food drive for Common Cupboard INDIAN TRAIL – Curves of Indian Trail will hold a food drive through March 31 as part of the fitness chains national drive. The organization is inviting both members and nonmembers to bring a bag of nonperishable food to be donated to a local food bank and help those in need. “We are excited to take part in the Curves Food Drive this year as it brings the community together to feed the needs of our local food banks while bringing women together in their health and wellness,� said Danielle Rojas of Curves of Indian Trail. “This year, donations will benefit Common Cupboard.�

Weddington town council to hold public hearing March 14 WEDDINGTON – Weddington town council will hold a public hearing on March 14 at 7 p.m. at town hall, located at 1924 Weddington Road.

The hearing will discuss a text amendment to the town’s zoning ordinance to correctly

reference the “setbacks from streams� section of the ordinance. The town encourages the public to attend, and a copy of the proposed ordinance is on file in the town planner’s office.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Another day, another high-profile resignation as the town of Indian Trail continues to hemorrhage top talent under new management. Kelly Barnhardt, the town's director of community and economic development, announced she was leaving her position with the town this week, continuing the exodus of people who are afraid of what the future holds for Indian Trail. While the new town council majority and their appointed, hapless manager continue to direct the blame toward past leaders, it's hard to ignore the empty offices spread across the town hall. Since Election Day, Indian Trail has seen its town manager, HR director, information technology director, assistant finance director, a planner and now the director of community and economic development, among others, leave. Keep in mind, there are only about 30 employees at the town. Surely these people aren't leaving because, as council claims, they disliked the old town manager (who hasn't worked for the town since November). They're probably leaving because they're afraid of their names being tarnished by the poorly planned manifesto the new council is trying to force into action.

It's likely too late to save Indian Trail. The voters have handed their tax dollars over to a group of individuals more interested in fighting battles of the past than planning for our town's future. While some say they may move to Canada if Trump is elected, I think it's time for Indian Trail residents to move to Waxhaw or Matthews to escape the damage already done here.

Political theater continues in Indian Trail The only thing missing at Indian Trail Town Council meetings is for the town clerk to ring a bell and our elected leaders to run at each other shirtless and ready for combat like on “The Jerry Springer Show.”

Council members Justin Vick don’t mind getting a little catty to win the occasional tawdry argument. It’s almost as if residents are experiencing a “Real Housewives” reunion show taping.

But I think this group has the potential to put the political one-upmanship behind them. While I believe each could benefit from 10 seconds of violent shaking, I’ll instead offer four unsolicited suggestions.

I speak from experience. I am a former fifthgrade class president and have nagged many people since.

Stop repeating yourselves

Remember the ad in the Union County Weekly just before the November election that compared “advocates for progress” to “activists against town advancement?”

The ad described Tiffany McGee as a business sales executive and Pam DeMaria as a financial development director, while calling David Cohn a meat sales representative.

It stung Cohn. He can’t seem to remove that bad taste from his mouth.

“I’m just a meat man,” Cohn said to Interim Town Manager Scott Kaufhold on Feb. 23 when discussing the town hall project. “I’ll show people how to sell meat and you can teach us how to build a building.”

Cohn also reminds people that he was the only one who wanted to put the town hall on a referendum for the people to decide. We get it. Meat man, one. Everyone else, zero.

Kaufhold can be guilty of this, too. Kaufhold seems to be giving the impression that he’s cleaning up the mess of the previous “regime.” He doesn’t have to. The council respects him. Everyone knows he’s new.

“I just wish we could get past that and work for this town going forward,” Council member Gordon Daniels said about the former town manager whom shall remain nameless. “Every time his name comes up, it’s a personal thing.’

Respect each other

After failing to convince colleagues to consider an alternate design for the town hall, Daniels felt the need to clarify why Kaufhold’s input on the project wasn’t sought by previous regime when he was the town engineer.

Kaufhold is a civil engineer, not a structural engineer, Gordon said, prompting Mayor Michael Alvarez to bang his gavel. Alvarez perceived Daniels to be insulting Kaufhold’s qualifications.

Alvarez and Daniels then began talking over each other.

“You know what? You have to throw me out this meeting, because it is generic – because I’m

hearing over and over that he’s the engineer,” Daniels said. “There are different types of engineers!”

Daniels insisted on the point because he was trying to make a clarification for taxpayers.

“That is your opinion,” the mayor replied.

“My opinion is the one that counts here.”

“Unfortunately,” Gordon said.

“That’s enough,” Alvarez answered. “Unfortunate, yes. It’s very unfortunate that my opinion matters.”

There was no purpose for this exchange.

to talk regularly with town staff about what’s feasible, legal and worth doing. Government work tends to be a series of tradeoffs.

Finally, the council is going to have to talk to each other.

If I were on the council, I’d try to build as much buy-in as possible for my resolutions. I’d brainstorm big-picture ideas with Daniels and tactical strategies with Wireman. I’d bounce ideas and strategies off Gary Savoie to make sure they are fool-proof. And I’d get Cohn and Amy Stanton’s opinion on whether we can get the public behind it.

Council members presented some pretty hefty legislation during the Feb. 23 meeting.

Daniels offered to lower the tax rate from 18.5 to 17.5 cents. He also introduced a Business Friendly Act designed to cut local red tape in opening and maintaining a business.

Mark Wireman wanted to allow companies to hang grand opening signs without a permit and ban private roads in neighborhoods.

None of these things were approved, partly because staff hasn’t had a chance to vet them. Some might not be feasible, or even legal.

The council is on to something in looking for opportunities to reduce the tax rate and making it easier to do business in town, but they could be operating much more efficiently if they communicate a little better.

Listening to the public is the easy part, but taking that input and adjusting service levels is the challenge. To do it effectively, council needs

You can push your agenda through with relative ease and block out opposing views.

Where that comes back to haunt you is election time.

Daniels can tell voters in two years that he attempted to lower the tax rate and create a more friendly business environment, only for the majority to shoot his ideas down.

He doesn’t have to mention that lowering the tax rate may not have been feasible given debt obligations or government mandates. Or that the business act may prompt reductions in service to pay for the elimination of permit fees. But he did attempt these things.

Making everyone feel as if their opinions matter may prevent members from lashing out.

Deputy Superintendent Mike Webb said Union County Public Schools has some emergency needs at its school that cannot wait and the district needs flexibility.

Webb told the Union County Board of Education (BOE) the district will need flexibility from the Union County Board of Commissioners (BOC) with some funding for capital projects to afford projects that â&#x20AC;&#x153;cannot be deferred.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Facilities has looked at the needs we have and the remaining budget that we have, as far as flexibility money, and what projects we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to this year for whatever reason and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be asking for flexibility to allow us to meet some of our emerging needs,â&#x20AC;? said BOE member Kevin Stewart, the Facilities Committee Chair.

Webb said the district has acquired ongoing preventative maintenance costs, comparing unit malfunctions to appliance faults at a home â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expected, but are often necessary.

During the 2015-16 budget proposal, the BOE submitted a $20 million budget request to cover specific projects from its capital plan, the CCEP, as well as about $2 million for preventative needs. Commissioners didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t grant the $2 million allocation and told the BOE members they could request additional funding for emerging needs.

BOE members approached commissioners in summer 2015 to request funds for emerging needs, but the appeal was denied and the BOE ultimately shuffled money from Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts and the Internet Protocol (IP) Platform projects to purchase a boiler and chiller for Weddington High School and a HVAC unit for Monroe Middle School, which were immediate needs at the time.

Commissioners blamed miscommunication for the denial and have begun working to build greater communication through joint meetings and requiring UCPS representatives attend BOC meetings when requesting money transfers.

Webb approached the BOE again to say the Benton Heights and the IP Platform projects need to stay on the backburner to afford emergency needs, including ADA issues per the Department of Educationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) review, which didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come in until after the budget cycle; a chiller at East Elementary School; heat exchanger replacements at Sun Val-

Webb presented a list of emergency needs totaling 10 projects with a $1.02 million deficit.

Alleviating these emerging needs means UCPS canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford to complete projects in Year 1 of the CCEP, including site improvements at both Benton Heights and Indian Trail elementary schools, among other projects. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can do all the (emerging needs) list that you have to do and not do anything on the (Year 1) list that you said you would do in the CCEP,â&#x20AC;?

Webb said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where you are right now.â&#x20AC;?

Webb and the Facilities Committee pushed to postpone the major renovations at Benton Heights and the IP Platform project to afford the emerging needs, totaling $2.18 million. He added the Benton Heights budget isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough to effectively complete the project.

Webb said the district has $373,864 of net available from the current budget to afford emerging needs until June, so the board would need greater flexibility from the BOC, particularly because some of the needs, such as the ADA requirements, have to be addressed by August and would need to start by April 6.

Stewart said the OCR sets out a schedule with the district to complete its ADA requirements and UCPS has three years to complete the list of ADA renovations, but they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t â&#x20AC;&#x153;sit on the shelf.â&#x20AC;?

The Facilities Chair also said the IP Platform project was already a segmented project and any savings from using the project money from both the IP and Benton Heights projects would go back to starting the IP Platform transition in middle schools.

The BOE voted in an 8-1 vote, with District 3 member Gary Sides as the sole adversary, to request the BOC allow flexibility with Benton Heights and IP platform funding to address UCPSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s critical needs.

The BOC approved a budget transfer of $50,155 from the Porter Ridge High School roofing project to the Weddington High School roofing project during its March 7 meeting, but commissioners did not discuss UCPSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emerging needs.

The Union County Foundation will host the Run for U 5K on April 9 at 8 a.m. to support students and educators in Union County.

Chinese culture brightens hallways at Marvin Elementary

WAXHAW â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Walking the halls of Marvin Elementary School on Feb. 26 there were red, black and blue silk outfits, colorful banners and decorations and cheerful chants.

The school participated in a Global Teach-In, in which the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mandarin Immersion students shared the celebration and culture of the Chinese New Year in a parade. Classrooms also spent time studying Chinese culture.

Marvinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mandarin Immersion program is in its fourth year, encompassing students from kindergarten through third grade. Through the program, children learn core subjects in both English and Mandarin with native Mandarin speakers hired through the SPLASH program at VIF International.

This year, Marvin chose China as its â&#x20AC;&#x153;cultural focusâ&#x20AC;? in celebration of its Mandarin Immersion program. From Feb. 22 to 26, various classes took focus in Chinese culture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As part of what Union County is doing, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re promoting globalization and you look at three areas: environment, technology and culture. We do it all the time, but we really wanted to showcase it.

It just so happened, it was just like a per-

fect storm, we just had Chinese New Year (combined with) globalization, so we did a global teach in,â&#x20AC;? said Assistant Principal Deborah Whaley.

Music classes learned about drums, and how they are used in music throughout the world; physical education classes learned about Tai Chi; media and computer classes used technology to research more information about China; and the daily morning broadcasts included student council members discussing facts about China, the Zodiac and the Chinese New Year.

The week concluded with Mandarin Immersion students dressing in traditional clothing, performing dances and showcasing their own Chinese New Year Parade throughout the school, along hallways of fellow students holding handmade lanterns, which included chants, traditional dress, paper dragons and banners.

Marvin Elementary also has an immersion program in Spanish, and the school was asked to pilot the Mandarin program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a language that is (helpful) in the business world and with everything being global and so united together. Mandarin is a language that a lot of people use. We have so many parents in our school and our cluster that are from so many differ-

ent countries and we have a lot of parents that speak Mandarin,â&#x20AC;? Whaley said.

Whaley hopes immersion students gain an awareness of other cultures through the program. Immersion students donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t learn foreign languages the way Whaley learned Spanish during her junior high school years, reading out of a textbook and learning key phrases, without learning the language in conversation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These immersion students are fluent talkers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even our kindergarten children can carry on conversations with each other,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much different than the way a lot of us learned a foreign language.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really immersed in it. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really learning how to have a conversation rather than memorizing certain things.â&#x20AC;?

Whaley believes the immersion programs are a â&#x20AC;&#x153;uniqueâ&#x20AC;? opportunity for students and prepares students for their futures. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re broadening their opportunities in the future in what they want to do,â&#x20AC;? she added.

As seen on TV: Region proves popular among film industry

Being the new kid in high school has been a contributing factor of teen angst for generations, and it’s the premise behind “Ashby.” South Charlotte movie fans might find the teen comedy even more relatable, considering scenes were filmed at South Mecklenburg High School.

“Ashby,” released last month on DVD, is among dozens of movies and television shows filmed in Charlotte and the surrounding area.

Local movie fans probably noticed Tony Robbins explaining the virtues of inner beauty to Jason Alexander’s superficial character in front of the Morrocroft Centre in the Jack Black comedy, “Shallow Hal.” They also might have realized the Grand Canyon portrayed in the Ed Helms comedy “Vacation” looked an awful lot like the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

The Charlotte Regional Film Commission works to recruit productions to the 16-county region by showcasing the diversity of its landscapes and landmarks.

Beth Petty, director of the film commission, attributes the region’s popularity among location scouts to its ability to double as other areas of the world.

When “The Hunger Games” needed a futuristic, apocalyptic environment, Petty’s office helped connect the production to the 2,100-acre Philip Morris campus in Concord.

“I knew the Philip Morris facility was closed at that point and they were unbelievably helpful and supportive in helping recruit that movie here,” Petty said. “This was the hook in bringing ‘The Hunger

Games’ to the region. That was their hub.”

While some location requests require outsidethe-box thinking, other productions might need shots of a particular style house or neighborhood.

‘The greatest of these is love’

The complex relationship between Henry Kissinger and President Richard Nixon is well documented. These two accomplished men achieved so much, and yet their own insePastor John H. Munro curities and pride brought pain to themselves and others. On one occasion Henry Kissinger, referring to President Nixon, said, “Can you imagine what this man would have been like if somebody had loved him?” While Kissinger was exaggerating, it does seem true that Nixon’s insecurities he experienced as a child impacted him greatly in his future relationships.

We are made in the image of a God of infinite love, and therefore, all of us long to love and to be loved. So it is not surprising that artists, poets, songwriters and authors have love as one of their most common themes. Loving relationships give us the greatest of joys; rejection and betrayal cause the greatest of pain.

Unlike God’s love which is perfectly pure, human love ebbs and flows.

More than two years ago when my older

brother was dying with a malignant brain tumor, I visited him several times in his home in England. He was a physician, and fully understood the dreaded diagnosis. We talked about our upbringing, our parents, our faith and values. He said how incredibly privileged we were to be raised in a home where our parents loved each other, loved us, and where we were also taught the love of God. My brother, who was married for more than 40 years to a loving wife, was the most secure person I have ever met. As we talked about our lives, I realized that his deep personal security was founded on, shaped, and flowed from these loving relationships.

Facing his imminent death he said, although he had never doubted God’s love for him, he had never experienced the love of God in his own soul so profoundly as he had since receiving the serious diagnosis.

What a gift! Just as a mother hugs her little daughter when she falls and scrapes her knee, so in the crises of life our loving Heavenly Father reassures us through His Spirit and His Word. The children of God are loved with an everlasting love.

Since having these conversations with my brother (now deceased), I have appreciated more deeply the love of God, the love of family, the love of my friends. I have tried not to take that love for granted, and to reach out to others with love, compassion, and hope.

The apostle John writes, “Beloved, as God so loved us let us love one another.”

Hattaway, a 145-pounder, overcame a shoulder injury that forced him to miss 10 matches. He finished with a 32-5 record on his way to win a state title, and become a National Prep Qualifier.

Trey Merritt Porter Ridge Porter Ridge senior Trey Merritt enjoyed an epic final voyage with the Pirates. The 145-pounder won the Southwestern 4A Conference Tournament, finished third at regionals and fifth in the state on his way to all-conference honors and a 43-10 finish.

Piedmont senior Thomas Flitz was vital to the Panthers’ success this season, as he performed at a high level and provided key leadership.

Flitz, a 160-pounder, finished with a 54-4 record, took first place at regionals and came in fourth at states.

Former Latin defensive coordinator to coach Carolina Pride

Carolina Pride pulled off quite the move when it hired Mike Hawks as its next football coach.

Hawks, who has nearly 35 years of coaching experience, including 16 years at Charlotte Latin where he served as the defensive coordinator, offensive line coach and ran the team’s offseason strength training program.

Hawks, 57, takes the helm after helping Latin (8-4, 1-3 CISAA) reach the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state championship, where it lost to Davidson Day, 31-13. He takes over a Carolina Pride program in need of fresh vision and energy after it finished with a 3-5 (3-1 Coastal) record. Hawks replaces Paul Jackson, who compiled a 13-7 (6-1 Coastal) record in two seasons with Carolina Pride.

“As with anything in a program like ours, it is strictly volunteer based,” Carolina Pride athletics director Bryce Friesz said. “Trying to find someone who has the ability and the time to give to

the program, and to do it on a strictly volunteer basis, is very hard in football. We felt like we were incredibly blessed with coach Hawks.

“We’re beyond excited. We have not had the ability to attract people like that in the past, so it really Mike Hawks makes for an exciting opportunity going forward.”

Hawks, a graduate of Myers Park, who played collegiately at Lenoir-Rhyne University, said the opportunity was a great fit for him, and seemed to be a good fit for Carolina Pride.

Carolina Pride, a Christian-based nonprofit, gives high school age boys the opportunity to play football that wouldn’t usually have the chance to play the sport.

“I like the concept they’re using,” Hawks said.

“They’re using Christ to be a part of the kids’ lives,

and giving us an opportunity to turn boys into men. To me, that’s what it’s all about. Ultimately, I’d like for it to be the type of program that every kid wants to play for and nobody wants to play against.”

Friesz said Carolina Pride doesn’t judge success by wins and losses, but it expects to be a wellorganized program.

“We strive to have coaches on the staff that know and love the Lord, that speak it, that bring it on the practice field as well as on the sidelines,” Friesz said.

Longtime Charlotte Latin coach Larry McNulty said Hawks has put in his dues, and that he’s energetic, enthusiastic, hard-working and passionate.

“They will be more disciplined than they’ve been in the past,” McNulty said. “He’ll demand the kids do things the right way. They’ll be very aggressive on defense and they’ll be fundamentally sound and they’ll play with a lot of passion.”

Carolina Pride will play a 12-game schedule in the 2016 season. It will face the likes of Charlotte Christian, Providence Day, Chester (S.C.), High

Point Christian Academy, Central (Pageland, S.C.) and Latin.

“He knows a lot about what we do, and I know a lot about what his thoughts are on defense,” McNulty said. “It will be an interesting matchup for sure.”

Hawks will meet with players and parents for the first time at Carmel Baptist Church Saturday, March 12 at 10 a.m. The meeting also is an informational session for prospective student athletes and their parents.

“They (parents) need to understand that I’m an ally,” Hawks said. “I’m never going to do anything to harm their child in any way, shape or form. The fact that he may not play doesn’t mean that I don’t love him, but I’m going to give him every opportunity to play and I’m going to give him every opportunity to experience the life lessons that football provides.”

Hawks has a combine scheduled for Carolina Pride players Monday, June 6, so he and his assistant coaches can figure out what they have to work with, in terms of personnel and where players best fit.

Marvin Ridge boys’ tennis eyes repeat state championship

The Mavericks were the kings of the court in their quest to win the N.C. High School Athletics Association 3A state tennis championship last season. Marvin Ridge’s boys’ tennis team is out to defend its crown, and enters the 2016 campaign with lofty expectations.

Coach Julie van Olden returns a strong nucleus of talent, including No. 1 player, senior George Lovitt, who signed to continue his tennis career at the University of Minnesota.

Marvin Ridge is two matches into the season, and the Mavs have already received a gauge at where they are at on the spectrum, battling two-time defending South Carolina 4A state champion, Spartanburg, to a 6-3 decision before falling short.

“We did lose, but all the matches were very good,” van Olden said. “It’s always good to be pushed as far as you can be pushed. We had two matches that went into the tie break that could have flipped it to 5-4.

“The guys were pushed, and that was exciting. The compliment they paid us was that we were by far the best team they’ve ever played in the greater area, South Carolina to here. We took that as quite a compliment. George showed his strengths.”

Lovitt won his singles and doubles matches against Spartanburg.

“I’d like to see him go undefeated this year,” van Olden said.

The Mavericks followed their season-opening letdown with a dominating 9-0 win on the road at Providence March 2.

“My goal as a coach is to put together a strong schedule,” van Olden said. “We’re looking to have another strong season. The preseason polls came out and put Marvin Ridge at No. 1, so we hope to live up to that prediction from the coaches across the state.”

cused and not take anything for granted. They’re working to improve, while she figures out what lineup works best.

“I don’t think any team should assume that they’re going to achieve something just because they did it the year before,” van Olden said. “I think there’s always still work to be done.”

Van Olden has the players compete in organized challenge matchGeorge Lovitt es, so every player gets an opportunity to compete for a spot in the lineup. Once those are complete, Marvin Ridge’s lineup will be ironed out.

She has high expectations for junior John Hatala and senior Avanish Madhavaram. They are coming off a state runner-up finish in doubles, and were on the winning line in Marvin Ridge’s state championship win over Cardinal Gibbons.

“They are definitely players to contend with,” van Olden said.

Junior Michael Kronovet also is expected to play a significant role. Juniors Liam Florian, Zach Schwartz and Chris Graveline are competing for spots too.

They didn’t start last season, but should contribute this spring.

Marvin Ridge welcomes junior Neil Palkar and freshmen James Issa, Sammy Marks and Ethan Traub to the fold. All should grow into promising players, who will likely contribute to the Mavs’ future success in years to come if not this season.
