How much is enough? Nonprofit helps families manage screen time

MATTHEWS – Technology is everywhere, and it’s an integral part of daily life – especially for young people.

Many school systems continue to push for more technology as a source of innovation, but does increasing technology mean increasing test scores?

Moms in the Matthews area were wondering how much screen time is too much, and founded Families Managing Media, a nonprofit, as a result. Recently, they’ve enlisted the voice of a Delaney Ruston, a filmmaker, doctor and mother of two, to share her documentary, “Screenagers: Growing Up In the Digital Age” and provide insight on the advantages – and disadvantages – of growing up in a technological world.

“Screenagers” looks at how parents can navigate the digital world, and the effects of screen technology on young people.

Families Managing Media Executive Director Melanie Hempe, a mother of four, struggled with gaming overuse in her home and was looking to manage her children’s screen time and use of smartphones.

“I started talking to other families and they were also struggling with this,” Hempe said.

Hempe, a nurse, began inviting physicians, neuroscientists, neurosurgeons and other experts to discuss the consequences of extended technology use and the “red flags” parents can identify.

Families Managing Media hosts monthly meetings and workshops to discuss parents setting boundaries for their child’s technology use, and the consequences of too much screen time.

“We all know we’re in a challenging time in raising our youngsters with the multiplicity of screens that are invading their lives,” said Covenant Day Head of School Mark Davis. “We can learn what we’re up against and what we can do.”

This month, the nonprofit hosted two screenings of Ruston’s “Screenagers,” and invited educators and stakeholders to host individual screenings of the documentary in their respective communities.

“Screenagers” dives into how Ruston’s family manages technology use and explores how other communities manage living in a digital world.

In the film, neuroscientists and technology experts discuss the negative consequences of ex-

tensive technology use, such as increased concern about physical appearance, less social interaction and decreased sensitivity and empathy. Studies showed students that are provided technology at home through their school actually perform worse on tests, because they’re spending most of their “homework time” surfing social media sites rather than learning. On average, boys play about 11.3 hours of video games a week, while about only 16 minutes daily of their screen time actually involves homework.

“Kids mimic what they see on the screen – good or bad,” said one of the documentary’s experts.

Experts also discussed the reasoning behind what attracts young people to social media and video games, and how adolescents can become “addicted” to their devices, as well as solutions for parents to help create balance for their children.

“There’s that portable nature of technology now,” said Ellen Cotton, who is part of Families Managing Media. “Technology used to be intentional; now, we can’t get away.”

The documentary discussed the extreme consequences that excessive screen time can cause, describing a gamer who failed out of college because he insisted on playing video games instead of going to class. He ended up at the reSTART Life Internet Rehabilitation Facility.

Matt Scully, a Providence Day School teacher who attended a showing of “Screenagers,” said he hopes parents that view the documentary see beyond the extreme cases in the film. He also hoped parents of young children would see the film before giving their children smart phones

and tablets.

“You don’t want to create rules after children create patterns,” Scully said.

Hempe hopes the documentary will incite conversations in the community, as well as with parents and their children.

“I want the community to understand the need for education for parents about how to navigate the digital world,” Hempe said. “Technology crosses schools and daily lives that presents issues we can’t keep our head in the sand anymore.”

Hempe said she finds parents sometimes can be shocked that they have the authority to set boundaries for their children’s technology use, but Families Managing Media provides practical solutions and suggestions to do just that.

“Just because it’s available doesn’t mean they need it,” Hempe said. “Having the Internet in your pocket is not good for kids and parents are often in the dark about where their kids are going (on the Internet).”

Hempe, and members of the Families Managing Media, welcome community groups and schools to host screenings of “Screenagers” at their facilities; however, screenings come with a cost, which are often afforded through ticket sales.

Hempe also will host question-and-answer sessions for community groups, as needed, which provide tactical questions and practical solutions for parents.

Senior citizen housing project could yield 49 homes

INDIAN TRAIL – Indian Trail Town Council will likely approve a rezoning request this month from a developer seeking to build 49 agetargeted homes for senior citizens on 16 acres off Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road.

The property is north of Blanchard Circle and across from Gator’s Deli. The neighboring communities of Colton Ridge, Satterfield and Arbors at Blanchard each range in density from 2.4 to 2.7 units per acre.

The planning board recommended approval in February, and no one spoke against the project during the March 22 public hearing. Town council could have approved the rezoning then, but wanted more information before voting.

Councilmember Mark Wireman said it was a great project, but he had concerns about not being able to find information online about the applicant, Blake Communities VP2-SC LLC. Wireman wanted to ensure the town had proper documentation to hold the applicant accountable.

“If we’re gong to build these homes for our community and our residents, we have to make sure that it’s a legitimate business coming in to build these homes,” he said.

H&H Homes will serve as the homebuilder.

The Fayetteville-based firm has built homes in the nearby Glendalough neighborhood, as well as in Concord, Mooresville and Denver.

H&H Homes presented three models from its Charleston collection in the rezoning application: Bristlecone (1,889 to 2,461 square feet), Wollemi (1,987 to 2,464) and The Austrian (2,193 to 2,656).

Each comes with at least two bedrooms and bathrooms. The homes will include two-car driveways and garages, as well as senior living hallmarks such as first-floor master bedrooms.

Homes could start in the $290,000s, though residents will have the option of upgrades.

“We find that more and more people want to be in what’s considered in an age-targeted neighborhood,” said Kerry Avant, senior vice president of land acquisition and development with H&H Homes.

Such neighborhoods tend to be smaller, more intimate and don’t often attract families with children, he said.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is requiring a left-turn lane into the development from Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road, but not a traffic impact study, Senior Planner Gretchen Coperine said.

The developer is putting in a 20-foot perimeter buffer and 2.3 acres of open space, which Coperine described as “above and beyond” what the town requires.

Residents attending two community meetings wanted assurance that the project wouldn’t result in flooding neighboring properties. Town staff visited the site and are working with the developer to ensure proper drainage.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Have you seen or been to the library in Waxhaw? If you have, I’m sure you would be thinking, “With all of the mansions and beautiful homes in this area – surely they could afford a library better than this!”

The Waxhaw Library is a converted ranch house with very limited space and poor parking facilities. This might have been fine when Waxhaw was a small rural community. That has changed and the area continues to grow at a remarkable pace. Indian Trail, Marshville and Monroe libraries are all spacious and wonderful buildings. Educational and entertaining programs are held in each of these libraries on a regular basis.

Sadly, the Waxhaw Library can barely fit the bookshelves and a few people at a time.

How wonderful for Waxhaw citizens if we could have reading programs for our young students and book signings, programs and meetings for the adults of the community.

Our society flourishes when the resources necessary to cultivate intellectual curiosities in innovative ways are provided.

Coke plant honored for safety MONROE – The N.C. Department of Labor awarded SHARP certification to Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated’s Monroe facility.

The Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program honors facilities with the highest standards of worksite safety and health.

Charlotte-based Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated is the nation's largest independent Coca-Cola bottler, operating in 14 states.

CATS explores commuter rail MATTHEWS – The Charlotte Area Transit System gathered input from the public April 5 to 7 to help determine the path of a commuter rail extending 13.5 miles from uptown Charlotte to downtown Matthews.

One of the biggest pending decisions is whether the commuter rail continues along Independence Boulevard or Monroe Road. CATS hasn’t decided where in Matthews to put the end of the line either.

Buses will help circulate people from commuter rail hubs to other destinations.

Transportation planner Jason Lawrence said people from Union County have asked for more Express Bus service, which will be incorporated with the N.C. Department of Transportation’s U.S. 74 Express Lanes project.

Express buses transport riders to and from uptown Charlotte with limited stops during the peak morning and afternoon commutes. Buses will be allowed to use the Express Lanes, an optional toll lane designed to keep traffic moving at a minimum of 45 to 50 miles per hour, even in rush hour.

The Metropolitan Transit System will consider approving the plan in the summer, opening the door for regional leaders to create a timeline and cost estimates for the Silver Line.

Tutoring Center celebrates opening with ribbon cutting WESLEY CHAPEL – A Huntington Learning Center has opened in Wesley Chapel, offering youth tutoring and test preparation for the SAT and ACT. Since its founding in 1977, the center has grown through franchising. Its website encourages people to request more information

about opening franchises in Charlotte, Monroe and Waxhaw.

Despite opening just this year, the Wesley Chapel franchise has already been involved in the community, hosting a booth at the Run for the Ridge 5K in Marvin and joining the Union County Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber will host a ribbon cutting April 12 at 2 p.m. at the center, located at 5945 Weddington-Monroe Road, suite 104.

Nonprofit opens Stallings office STALLINGS – Bright Blessings will celebrate the opening of its new office in Stallings with a Union County Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting.

The nonprofit serves homeless or impoverished children.

The ribbon cutting starts at 10:45 a.m. on April 19, and will be held at 1150 Crews Road, suite C. The office will also host a Bless-a-Baby Shower from 1 to 5 p.m. in which volunteers can fill baby baskets with diapers, wipes, lotion and other newborn essentials in an openhouse setting.

How to prepare for a civil litigation consultation

You’ve just contacted an attorney and scheduled a consultation for legal advice and possibly representation in a civil litigation matter. Here’s what to expect, how to prepare, and what to bring with you to get the most out of your consultation.

In general, an attorney will spend approximately an hour learning more about your case.

Much of the consultation will center on factfinding. You’ll need to provide all the pertinent details about your case, identifying when the issue arose and all the involved parties. Documentation will help paint a clear picture of the factual circumstances surrounding your potential case.

If you’re involved in a contractual dispute, bring the contract. Contracts have important provisions that may shape the approach by which your attorney will advise you. Some of these provisions alter the forum in which you are able to seek redress by designating which law applies or by making arbitration mandatory. In a dispute regarding a lease, bring the lease agreement. In a business dispute, bring your operating agreement or shareholder agreement. Other documents that evidence important terms and facts include purchase orders or invoices.

For a personal injury issue, bring your insurance company information, including communications you have already had with the insur-

ance company, medical bills, and photographs of any damages to your property or body.

If you’ve already tried to resolve this issue before contacting an attorney, bring any written communication you have had with the opposing party, including letters you have sent notifying the other party of the issue, emails attempting to resolve the issue, and documentation of the other party’s responses. Upon engaging an attorney to represent you, your attorney will likely use these communications in preparing your case or negotiating on your behalf.

Your attorney will discover what you desire out of representation, consider whether there is a conflict of interest in representing you against the potential opposing party, assess whether any applicable limitations period prevents you from bringing suit, and will want to be sure that (s)he will be able to adequately represent your best interests. Seeking justice before jumping to conclusions

When I was practicing law in Scotland, I sometimes appeared before a judge who, by all accounts, was a decent man. But it was well known that he favored the side which first appeared before him.

So prosecutors loved him, as they always presented their evidence first. Plaintiffs (called pursuers in Scotland) also loved him because they, similarly, led evidence first.

Pastor John H. Munro Although he was a good man, he was a bad judge. A competent judge suspends making a decision until he has heard all of the evidence.

King Solomon put it this way: “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him” (Proverbs 18:17). This is very sound advice. In a court case, cross-examination is vital, as the evidence by one side is then tested by the other side. Most people can sound convincing if their evidence and allegations are never tested.

Every day all of us are tempted to make judgments about people and events. With social media and 24 hours of “breaking news,” it is very easy to jump to quick conclusions about a particular issue or person when all we have really heard is one side. Many people quickly put statements on social media based on half-truths, rumors, allegations or unsubstantiated statements. On the face of

it, they may appear to be experts on the issue they present.

But the fact that someone makes an allegation or an accusation does not prove the veracity of the statement. Wise people reserve judgment until they have heard “the whole truth.” The one who states his case first might be lying, prejudiced, or simply unaware of all the facts.

Over the years, many couples with marital problems have come to me seeking counsel. Often a wife will first present her side of the difficulties. She might not be lying or trying to deceive me, but in many cases, she is selective in what she tells me. Then, when I meet with her husband, I hear another side of the truth. Wisdom requires all of us to suspend judgment until all the facts are known. Too often we jump to conclusions based on our prejudices, preconceptions, or whether we like or dislike a person or viewpoint. In a criminal trial, the accused is presumed to be innocent until all the evidence is presented, and a verdict then reached.

The Old Testament prophet, Micah, said that the Lord requires of us that we “do justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8). God is infinite in His justice, and we who claim to be His children should also live justly and show kindness to all, rather than quickly believing some accusation or rumor, and possibly even gossiping about it to others.

While Lady Justice is blind and her scales of justice perfectly balanced, the reality in our world is often very different. But I am thankful for a God who is infinite in His justice, and whose judgments are always just, impartial, and loving. Let’s always seek to be just and kind, and not quickly jump to conclusions when we have only heard one side.

BOE passes a $230 million bond, urges for capital funds flexibility

The Union County Board of Education (BOE) took steps to address its capital needs at its April 5 meeting by passing a $230million bond referendum.

The board passed a resolution that would send the bond referendum to the Union County Board of Commissioners (BOC) in a 7-1 vote, with Gary Sides in opposition and Kevin Stewart absent. If passed by the BOC, the bond referendum would go on the November ballot.

Deputy Superintendent Mike Webb presented a reevaluated capital plan in March that shifted large capital projects that would cost more than $230 million total. The bond would afford 29 projects, including a new Sun Valley High School hybrid, a new transportation facility and multiple additional classrooms in various schools.

“The Union County Board of Education is of the opinion that existing school facilities in Union County are not adequate for the maintenance of public schools in the county for the term prescribed by law,” the budget resolution read.

The board identified “constructing, expanding, renovating and repair” needs that exceed $230 million and “continue to grow.”

The capital plan seeks to retain system stability by keeping students in their current schools, replacing mobile classrooms with

brick and mortar classrooms, and maintaining equality in schools.

The BOE also is hoping to gain greater latitude regarding capital funds, particularly to address “emerging needs.”

BOE members asked commissioners to defund the IP camera transfer and Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts projects to address those needs, a request the BOC made on Jan. 19, during the April 4 BOC meeting. UCPS staff saw no safety concerns by defunding the IP camera transfer and said the $1.8 million for Benton Heights wouldn’t be able to address all the needs to the building.

The BOC denied the request in January and again at the April 4 meeting.

“There is no interest in this board defunding a Title I school,” Chairman Stoney Rushing said.

County Manager Cynthia Coto encouraged the board to wait until the new budget cycle for the BOE to “make any of their needs known to the board.”

Commissioner Richard Helms also felt commissioners couldn’t make any changes based on the “agreement” that the BOE could only request budget transfers if a BOE member attended the commissioners’ meeting. No BOE member was in attendance to the April 4 meeting.

Commissioner approved a resolution to ask if the BOE wants to use the funds for the IP cameras for Benton Heights, but the BOE has not yet addressed the question.

Budget shows $13M increase

Union County Public Schools could see an increase of at least $13 million for the 2016-17 school year, and more increases might be coming.

Staff presented an unfinished proposal of the superintendent’s budget at the Board of Education’s April 5 meeting, due to a lack of governor’s budget or state allotments.

Chief Financial Director Dan Karpinski presented the draft despite a lack of numbers to demonstrate some future needs of the district.

Karpinski said the county would have increased expenses because of an increase in charter school student allocations required by state law, due to a new charter school opening in Union County in the 2016-17 school year, greater utility costs, assistant principals moving up the pay grade and retirement and health insurance costs.

Staff also has begun looking into making market adjustments to their non-certified positions, such as HVAC or computer technicians, as other counties or industries are paying more than UCPS. Karpinski hopes to make UCPS more competitive with non-certified workers, as well as for principals and teachers.

Ellis said principals are leaving the district

because they don’t want to lead at high priority schools, which are mandated by unrealistic expectations by the state.

“Anybody in this room who can cure poverty, you ought not to be in this room, you ought to be marketing it globally,” she said. “To think a principal is going to fix poverty inside of ‘X years’ or decades is ridiculous, but they’re making strides.”

She added N.C. principal pay is ranked 51st in the nation and she predicts challenges for the new superintendent to convince principals to go lead high priority schools unless “they are at the end of their career or they’re assistant principals and they don’t know what they’re getting themselves into.”

BOE members also want to look into competitive teacher pay and are looking to local supplements as the solution. The county allocated $2.5 million last year toward teacher supplements and required the BOC, according to Karpinski, to allocate another $2.5 million for supplements. The board chose to defer teacher laptop purchases to afford them.

The Finance Committee will meet on April 28 at 4 p.m. to discuss the final superintendent’s budget and the full board will meet at 6 p.m. for a budget workshop. The BOE plans to vote on the proposed budget at its May 3 meeting.

Weddington theater gambles with love in ‘Guys and Dolls’

WEDDINGTON – Audiences will take a step back in time next week to 1940s Time Square with Weddington High School’s production of “Guys and Dolls.”

The show follows a bet between a gambler, Sky Masterson, and Nathan Detroit, who runs an illegal floating craps game. The bet says Sky will have to earn a date with Sister Sarah Brown, who leads the Save-a-Soul Mission calling for sinners to “Follow the Fold” and repent. Sky and Sarah develop a romance, while illegal gamblers attempt to avoid the police.

Director Maria Moore, who has taught at Weddington since 2000, said she chose the show because she had a large number of guys auditioning, opposed to having only an abundance of female students, which she said is typical in high school theater.

“This year, I had a lot of senior guys specifically and I really wanted to have a show they could really show off their talents,” Moore said.

She also said more contemporary shows often aren’t available or appropriate for high schoolers, so she typically selects era shows, such as “Hairspray” last year, but doesn’t shy away from modern shows, such as “Les Misérables.”

“Guys and Dolls” is a “classic” show, Moore said, and includes a great amount of dialogue and recognizable songs, such as “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”

The increase dialogue allowed students to further develop their characters than in a typical show with mostly songs.

“In some musicals, it’s so heavy with music, which is fun too, but it’s hard to develop character from just the music. It’s a lot of dialogue,” Moore said. “(Junior) Wyatt Furlong (who plays Nathan Detroit) and (senior) Cierra Hicks (who plays Miss Adelaide), they’ve developed a relationship because their dialogue is cute. They’re not married; they’ve been engaged for 14 years. They have this cute little fun dialogue between them that you wouldn’t find in show that’s all music.”

The director pushed the actors to conduct analyses and look at dialogue between characters to help with characterization.

“I try for them to be open and try not be self-conscious, which is hard to do in high school. You have this reputation and you have to make yourself open to everything. You’re putting yourself out there. I try to get them to be comfortable to try different things,” she added.

Senior Myah Ward, who plays Sarah, said she had to find her confidence on stage and not second-guess her performance. Cierra

said her biggest challenge was nailing down her New Jersey accent, which she said adds another element to her performance.

For many of the leads in the show, “Guys and Dolls” will be their final show as high school seniors, and they plan to go out in style through a show with a large cast.

“Off stage, (the cast) is definitely like a family. We’re very close and I think you see that bond on stage. We can develop good relationships on stage and characters, while working together as a team,” Myah said.

Much like the cast of the show, the entire Weddington community shows its support for theater as much as its football team.

“I think our school is very supportive of one another no matter what aspect of school you’re involved in,” Moore said. “Our football stadium is full and our auditorium will be full. I’ve got football players, soccer players, cross-country team – tons of kids from other walks or cliques and they’re very supportive … I don’t think that’s necessarily true in other high schools. I don’t know why our culture is like that, but it’s really awesome.”

Moore and the cast encourage the community to attend the show, as the performance captures “every emotion,” Myah said.

Weddington High School will perform “Guys and Dolls” April 14, 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. each night. Tickets cost $5 for students and $6 for adults.

Junior point guard Ryan Schwieger is a 6-foot-6 matchup nightmare who plays inside and outside and averaged 18 ppg, 7.9 rpg and 3.1 apg. He was named team MVP, Conference Player of the Year and all-district second team.

Davidson, Presbyterian, Elon and Charlotte 49ers are recruiting him, along with a plethora of others.

Sophomore guard Hunter Tyson, at 6-foot-6, can shoot over and post up most guys, giving him a definitive edge in most matchups. He took advantage of that, averaging 19.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 1.1 apg and 1.2 spg to earn team MVP and all-conference honors.

player of the year Emeka Nwankwo Metrolina Christian Senior forward Emeka Nwankwo was one of the Warriors’ bright spots this season. The Nigeria native and Montreat College commit was stellar in his final season at Metrolina Christian. He averaged 17 ppg, 17 rpg, two bpg and two apg.

Nwankwo, who amassed 980 points and 650 rebounds in two years with the Warriors, earned all-conference honors.

Dillon Harrison Union Academy

Senior guard Ryan Mobley has been one of the key cogs to the Cavaliers’ success the last two seasons. Mobley, who is receiving interest from Division II, Division III and junior colleges, averaged team highs in 16.7 ppg, 3.3 apg and 2.3 spg. He was named team MVP, and made the all-conference team.

Union Academy sophomore guard Dillon Harrison does it all for the Cardinals. Harrison was more than a dynamic scorer. He crashed the boards, and played suffocating defense. Harrison averaged 21 ppg, 10 rpg, three apg, 1.5 spg and 1.5 bpg on his way to all-conference and Uwharrie Player of the Year honors.

Athletics director Rudi Heath retires, Piedmont hires Fitts

Rudi Heath retired as Piedmont’s athletics director and boys’ basketball coach at the end of last month after four years with the school.

Heath, a Western Carolina graduate who spent 36 years as a high school coach, began his career at Andrews (three years), and made stops at North Stanly (16 years) and West Stanly (13 years) before arriving at Piedmont in 2012.

“I love Piedmont, the community, faculty,” Heath said. “It’s just a perfect situation.

The last four years have been really good.

Back in the fall, I started thinking about retirement real serious. I hated to leave such a good situation. I struggled around with it for a while.

“It was time for me to finish. My wife’s been really good to let me play, and to give me the time to do the job, the time it takes … I just think it’s time to give it back to her now.”

Heath leaves Piedmont after guiding the Panthers to a 52-62 (18-24) record and two playoff appearances.

He will be replaced by Forest Hills’ girls’ basketball coach Jay Fitts, who took the Yellow Jackets to the state playoffs twice in his two years at the helm.

Previously, Fitts served as an assistant coach with the Forest Hills’ boys basketball team for three years after head-coaching stints with Porter Ridge’s boys’ basketball program and the Weddington girls’ basketball program.

“First and foremost, Dr. Tyson being the principal at Piedmont was a huge factor in

my interest,” Fitts said. “I’ve known Dr. Tyson for quite a while. He was at Forest Hills as an assistant principal when I first got there. He’s a basketball guy. He had a great deal of success as their head basketball coach. He’s a major reason for my interest in the job.

“Another thing that is very attractive about Piedmont is I believe it’s a true community school. They have tremendous support from their parents, from their fan base. That’s always a great thing. Finally, I think through all my time in Union County, Piedmont kids have always been very tough, hardnosed kids. They’ve always played extremely hard, and have been coachable.”

Fitts will finish the school year at Forest Hills, but will come to Piedmont in the afternoons for open gym and workout sessions with his new players. Fitts has only been on

the job for a week, but the considerable size of his new team stands out to him.

“That’s always a plus,” Fitts said. “It’s not something you can teach. That will allow us to show some different defensive looks.

Something I’ve seen early on with these kids is they have an eagerness to improve.”

Piedmont loses five seniors from a team that finished 9-16 (0-10 Southern Carolinas), so Fitts will have his work cut out for him as he seeks to rebuild the Panthers back into a winning competitor. Rising junior guard Hunter Tyson gives him an elite goto-guy to build around, but Piedmont will need more players to emerge as key contributors.

His former assistant coach Danny Whitley, who was already an assistant football coach at Piedmont, will join his staff.
