County supports Waxhaw YMCA

WAXHAW – Union County is donating about 3.5 acres at the Twelve Mile Creek Water Reclamation Facility to help Waxhaw build more recreational fields around a new YMCA branch. The town recently closed on the purchase of 13 acres to complement the YMCA going in at Kensington Drive and N.C. 16. The branch would be part of a larger park, with

soccer fields, a pavilion, bathrooms, parking, pond, greenspace and walking trails. “What the additional acreage gives us is the chance to have more public access by squeezing in a third field,� Waxhaw Mayor Steve Maher said. The town and YMCA will share the use of a U-18 and two U-11 soccer fields. County Manager Cynthia Coto said commissioners adopted a policy to work with towns to improve recreational facilities across Union. The county hadn’t earmarked the 3.5
