City revitalizing land use plan to spur economic, residential growth

MONROE – As “The Force” awakened last month with the release of the latest “Star Wars” film, so did a Monroe movie theater that had been vacant for more than three years.

NCG Cinemas celebrated its grand opening in the Union Square shopping center, located at the corner of U.S. 74 and Dickerson Boulevard, in December 2015 and has received positive response from the community, theater representatives have said.

But, just a few months prior to the theater’s advent, Harris Teeter – the large grocery store that had been a staple in the shopping center for years – closed its doors indefinitely.

A number of other businesses located along the same shopping strip also have closed, leaving a considerable amount of vacant retail space. So far, the city of Monroe doesn’t have any solid leads on business arrivals that could jumpstart the largely stagnant shopping center.

“It started several years ago with our interim city manager contacting Harris Teeter there to try to see if they would make some improvements, to renovate (the store),” Lisa Stiwinter, Monroe’s director of planning, said.

“But (the city) wanted the proprietor to renovate the shopping center in general. The paving’s terrible; there are a lot of potholes.”

The city’s efforts were to no avail, as Harris Teeter identified the Union Square location as a poor-performing store and chose to shut it down rather than spend money sprucing it up to try and attract more customers.

The strip in Union Square isn’t entirely vacant. Smoker’s Depot, Subway and Fancy Nails are among a handful of businesses that still operate out of the shopping center. But the closing of Harris Teeter and a handful of other businesses left a glaring vacancy, and the city isn’t sure when and if it will be filled.

“Nothing’s been submitted at this time,” Stiwinter said. “We’ve had discussions with a couple different potential businesses, but nothing further.”

A shopping center just across U.S. 74 is in a similar situation. Both K-Mart and Food Lion recently closed their doors, leaving two large vacant retail spaces in the shopping center. Like Union Square, the shopping center’s future is uncertain.

Stiwinter said the city is currently working on revitalizing its land use plan to see what residents want and how the city can best meet the needs of its citizens and businesses.

A common trend staff found, as they work with a hired consulting firm to revamp the land use plan, is housing and commercial development go hand in hand, Stiwinter said.

“What we’re really seeing is in order to get your retail, you’ve got to have rooftops,” she said. “We’re going to be working on bringing

in more houses and choices – housing options for the aging (population), the millennials …

We’re revising our plan on how to develop for the next few years.”

Stiwinter said the city is working to ensure the long-range plan reflects a “communitydriven vision” through public involvement, such as open public workshops, stakeholder interviews and more.

In addition to housing and commercial/ retail, the plan also is focusing on transportation – including everything from improving highways to adding bicycle lanes, sidewalks, greenways and more.

“It’ll be probably six months before (the updated plan) is completely adopted,” Stiwinter said. “It’s going to be a tool that, hopefully, will interest developers on the commercial and residential side.”

Restore Global makes large donation to Carolina Waterfowl INDIAN TRAIL – Nonprofit Restore Global donated 2,000 pounds of dog food through its Access to Excess program to benefit Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. Carolina Waterfowl Rescue uses about 100 pounds of dry dog and cat food each week to provide protein for its carnivorous birds at the rescue. The Indian Trail-based nonprofit is accepting donations of dry cat and dog food to help the birds in its care.

Indian Trail residents expressed their hopes for Crooked Creek Park on Jan. 6.

Union County award-winning composer to perform at Wingate WINGATE – Union County native Mark W. Winchester will perform at Wingate University on Jan. 22, a Friday, at 7:30 p.m. at the McGee Theatre in the George A. Batte Jr. Fine Arts Center.

Winchester will present some of his newest and most popular Mark Winchester compositions.

Winchester’s piece, “Moon over Memphis,” was chosen as the International Bluegrass Music Association’s song of the year last year.

He has written country hits performed by Randy Travis, Emmy Lou Harris’ Nash Ramblers, and the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

During the concert, Winchester will explain how journal writings by Flannery O’Connor influenced the lyrics and music on his latest CD. The performance will also include a questionand-answer session.

Residents give feedback on Crooked Creek expansion INDIAN TRAIL – Indian Trail held a public discussion on Jan. 6 to give residents a chance to express their hopes for the Crooked Creek Park expansion. A fishing pond, bike path, football field with press box and Miracle League field were just a few of the suggestions.

The town’s Parks and Recreation Department hosted the forum with Woolpert, a consultant firm working on the park’s master plan, to gather input regarding what additions residents would like to see included in the next phase of the park’s expansion.

“We are very pleased with the amount of input we received from area residents,” Indian Trail Parks and Recreation Director Jason Tryon said in a news release. “We’ll take this input, as well as other suggestions we

Allow me to present Charlotte’s Golden Globe awards Have you ever heard of the Golden Globes?

It’s a seven-minute YouTube clip of a British dude hurling obscene jokes (not Gordon Ramsay) at Hollywood’s most famous stars. There’s also an urban legend that awards are given out after the jokes.

Kind of reminds me of the Oscars.

In the spirit of the Oscars, I thought I’d play into the hype by handing out a few awards of my own – to the very government officials who have made the real estate and development beat interesting this year in southern Mecklenburg and western Union counties. I’ll try to keep the insults to myself – most likely under my breath as I type – mostly Justin Vick about coworkers.

Best performance: Kenny Smith

Ricky Gervais could say Smith’s a thoroughbred on a Charlotte City Council full of donkeys. He is one of two Republicans at a crowded dais of Democrats. More important, he’s active in representing the SouthPark area. He’s good at finding compromises among viable development projects and the neighbors concerned about traffic, noise or building elevations. He’s advocated for city leaders to study SouthPark traffic, which they are going to do later this year.

Runner-up: James (Jim) Taylor – The mayor of Matthews is more than a red mane and a guitar-plucking namesake. He’s arguably the most revered mayor in the region.

Best newcomer: Warren Wood

Waxhaw has been attacking the future from multiple vantage points since Wood became town manager in March. The town is

updating its ordinances, commissioning traffic studies and working with retail consultants. Wood is no stiff in a suit either. He has easily elicited chuckles and commanded respect from elected leaders.

Runner-up: Stephen Maher – The citizens of Waxhaw elected Maher as mayor in November 2015 after just a year serving as an appointed commissioner. He’s a relationship-builder who seems very sincere for a politician.

Biggest flop: Bridges at Mint Hill

Another year has passed and we still haven’t seen any reassurance that this open-air mall will ever open. After 12 years, town leaders are having trouble getting developers on the phone. The project was supposed to yield 1.3 million square feet of retail and commercial space. There has been one glimmer of hope – Charlotte Water is designing a pump station that would help secure utilities to the site.

Runner-up: School real estate – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools wanted to show Mecklenburg County commissioners that the district was responsible with its resources by selling surplus land. But county officials mistook the effort as the district trying to get into the development business.

Most exciting project: Silver Line

The Charlotte Area Transit System began talking midyear to Charlotte and Matthews residents about the types of transit they’d like to see along the Independence Boulevard corridor. Many in Matthews hoped this was an opportunity to replicate the light rail project from uptown Charlotte to South Boulevard, which has spawned economic development opportunities at hubs. The Silver Line is still being developed and could include buses and rapid transit options.

Runner-up: Waverly – News continues to bubble to the surface about new and exciting retail concepts coming this live-work-play

project at Providence and Ardrey Kell roads in Charlotte. Then, you have mixed-use projects neighboring it.

Best drama: Toll lanes

The N.C. Department of Transportation held a pair of public meetings about U.S. 74 and I-485 Express Lanes in March and April, but the unique nature of the I-77 tolls ignited residents in the Lake Norman area against the project. That wildfire eventually spread to our region as local leaders worried that cancelation of the I-77 project already under construction could jeopardize U.S. 74 and I-485 improvements, as well as delay several other highway projects. With Charlotte declaring Jan. 11 that it supports a managed lanes strategy, these projects will likely remain intact.

Runner-up: Indian Trail town hall – For a while, Indian Trail meetings and campaign events seemed like “Captain America: Civil War” as commissioners went at each other hard like the Avengers over the need to build an $8-million town hall. The carnage included a town manager vacancy and two new town commissioners.

Best ensemble: Millennials

This area wants millennials, badly. It’s not just a fad. It’s really about ensuring we get the next generation of homeowners. We’re trying to get them early with more multi-use development projects that promote live, work and play. Towns such as Matthews and Waxhaw have talked openly about recruiting them, with Waxhaw going as far as launching a millennial task force.

Runner-up: Senior citizens – We know the story like that episode of “NCIS” where they catch the bad guy. Baby boomers are getting older. They need some place to go. We’re going to continue seeing more projects catering to this crowd.

Fighting for a cure for Adam Sun Valley freshman struggles with neurofibromatosis

INDIAN TRAIL – Indian Trail resident Michelle Cowden-Crego wakes up every day fighting to find a cure for neurofibromatosis (NF) – a disease her 15-year-old son, Adam, has battled his entire life.

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. The tumors are typically benign, but can develop anywhere on the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, which can lead to complications. Adam has experienced hearing and vision loss, severe pain, and loss of lung or arm function, among other difficulties. “Adam is filled with tumors. He has more tumors than you could even count. He had one on his brain stem, he’s had one on his retina, he’s got them all over his bones,� Cowden-Crego said.

There is no cure or treatment for NF. In January 2015, a speech therapist at his school noticed Adam failed a few hearing tests and had trouble hearing his name called. After a visit to the family’s neurologist, they noticed Adam’s spine was severely crooked and they found a massive tumor that originated on his cervical spine and grew down into his chest. The whole right side of his lung was not working. “The tumor was also sitting between the aorta and the superior vena cava and, so they had to go in (March 2015) and open his entire chest and take out as much of the tumor that they could,� Cowden-Crego said.

Surgeons could not completely remove the tumor because it would paralyze him; the tumor attached to the cervical spine and brachial plexus, which moves the arm.

Adam is a freshman at Sun Valley High School, but often has trouble carrying his backpack around and experiences fatigue.

Since his surgery, he is predominately tubefed and can walk, but can’t easily perform tasks, such as climbing stairs. He also recently shattered his femur climbing into his 17-year-old brother Michael’s truck because of a new tumor.

Cowden-Crego said she wants Adam to experience “a normal life for as long as he can� because the nature of the disorder causes his condition to become worse.

Adam’s mother describes the disorders as “having ticking time bombs in your body constantly� because the family cannot detect when or where a tumor will grow and how quickly it will develop.

Cowden-Crego said some people don’t realize how common NF is: One in 3,000 people are diagnosed with NF – more than 2 million people worldwide have the disorder. “I always say it’s the most common genetic disorder you’ve never heard of,� she said.

Cowden-Crego has since been on a mission to inform the public about NF and to raise awareness about the disorder.

tion for NF Awareness Month and the Wells Fargo-Duke Energy Center to light up in blue and green. “The only thing that is going to stop (NF) is to get a cure,â€? Cowden-Crego said. “Anytime you can raise awareness. When people say, “Oh, I know what NF is,â€? they’re more likely to donate ‌ my goal is if I can raise awareness, I can raise money for a cure.â€?

The single mother isn’t finished in her journey to help find a cure for NF. She’ll participate in the Cupid’s Undie Run on Feb. 13, which raises money for The Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF).

Participants will run a mile in their “bedroom’s best� all in the name of awareness for CTF and NF. Adam’s mother encourages community members to donate to the cause and run on Feb. 13.

Since the run started in 2010, the number of drugs in clinical trial has increased from zero to 21.

Cowden-Crego said despite experiencing heartache and financial and emotional impacts from caring for Adam, she still says, “There is positive in the bad.� “Michael has been my right hand through this whole thing, but the sad thing is he shouldn’t have to be,� Cowden-Crego said. “He spends a lot of time helping me at home when he should be out with his friends.�

Cowden-Crego, who is an exceptional children teacher at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, had to take time off for Adam’s surgery last year. Her coworkers pooled their vacation days together to ensure she could have enough time off to complete the year.

Despite positive moments, the single mother said she feels like she has to “hold her breath,â€? as her family waits for a cure and treatment for Adam as the disorder deteriorates his body. “There is nothing worse in the world than not being able to do anything. When your kids get sick, you want to fix it,â€? she said. â€œâ€ŚThat’s why I’m on a mission because I don’t ever want to look back and see that I didn’t do everything I possibly could.â€?

BOE to request money transfers from county commissioners

Union County Public Schools Board of Education (BOE) will request money transfers for three district projects that were over budget from the Union County Board of Commissioners (BOC) at its Jan. 19 commissioners’ meeting.

The BOC passed a motion in late 2015 requiring the BOE to physically attend a BOC meeting when the BOE need to transfer money of any amount from one project to another and present the reasoning behind the request.

Multiple BOE members – including Chairman John Collins – have voiced opposition to the motion, stating they feel they’re giving up control over its budget.

BOE member Melissa Merrell served as representative for the BOE and the facilities committee at the Dec. 7 BOC meeting and helped secure funds for three roofing bids.

A BOE member will have to serve as representative once again at the Jan. 19 meeting, which will be decided by Collins.

The representative will ask for funds for roofing contracts at Unionville and Porter Ridge elementary schools, flexibility to fund a renovation at Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts and address the “growing emerging list of needs,” according to Deputy Superintendent Mike Webb.

The Unionville Elementary roofing bid was $240,789 over budget and Porter Ridge was $134,650 over budget. The additional funds might be taken from another project at the end of the 2015-16 capital budget.

The emerging needs refers to those not addressed in the 2014-15 capital budget, as well as immediate needs the BOE has presented to the BOC since July 2015.

“What the Facilities Committee presented for me to do is to ask the board county commissioners to provide flexibility when it comes to Benton Heights Elementary School, Indian Trail Elementary School and the Internet Party (IP) platform,” Webb said.

The board wants flexibility completing the Benton Height renovations, including a new sound system and auditorium ventilators.

BOE member Gary Sides questioned what, specifically, would be completed for the Benton Heights and Indian Trail site plans.

Webb said it would renovate parking lots, reroute dismissal lanes and fix broken pavement.

The projects cost $3.4 million and the other items of emerging needs projects is about $2.4 million, Webb said.

Webb said the board would have approximately $594,000 left over to address other emerging needs until the end of the school year, or use the money to cover overages as

Sides also voiced concern about pushing the IP Platform, or what he referred to as “security camera updates,” into the next fiscal year. He worried if the board chose to push the camera until the start of the new fiscal year in July, UCPS workers wouldn’t have time to complete the update before school started.

Webb said the district might acquire savings from a sewer project at New Salem Elementary School, which potentially could jumpstart purchasing the proper equipment for the update. He said that if the board took that route, they would more easily be able to complete the update in the next fiscal year because they’d already have the equipment.

The project would cost about $1.2 million and the district would put it to bid because of the amount of labor it entails.

BOE member Kevin Stewart asked Webb whether safety would be compromised without the update and Webb clarified the system would still be “fully functional” without the upgrade.

The BOE approved all three of Webb and the Facilities Committee’s requests for the BOC and a representative will present those needs next Tuesday.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the first floor boardroom of the Union County Government Center, located at 500 N. Main St. in Monroe.

Education Briefs Basden named interim assistant superintendent The Union County Board of Education approved Sam Basden as the interim assistant superintendent of auxiliary services at its Jan. 5 meeting.

Basden has worked in UCPS since 2007. He served as Porter Ridge High School principal from 2007 to 2014 and then served as director of secondary support services until his new appointment.

Basden will replace Dr. Shelton Jefferies, who is now superintendent of Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. His appointment went into effect Jan. 6.

Porter Ridge High School band performs at Pearl Harbor INDIAN TRAIL – Porter Ridge High School performed for Pearl Harbor Day on Dec. 7, and was the only band representing North Carolina.

The parade is an annual event in Hawaii to remember and recognize those who fought and died during the Pearl Harbor attacks.

The Band of Pirates was named Grand Champion at their first competition of the season in September 2015 and have worked under the direction of Ian Faires and Stephanie Tomberlin.

The Marching Band played on the U.S.S. Missouri and Arizona and marched in the Pearl Harbor Day parade.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has been a monumental hit. On the opening weekend, it made movie history bringing in $238 million dollars in the United States alone.

After 12 days, it had brought in $1 billion dollars. What a phenomenal success. Many find it a “must-see” movie. The Economist (Dec. 19, 2015) had a leading article, “Star Wars, Disney and Myth-making.” Here are a few excerpts: Pastor John H. Munro “In uncertain times, when governments and military might seem unable to keep people safe or stay honest, audiences take comfort in the idea of superheroes who ride to the rescue. Modern myths also have the power to unify people across generations, social groups and cultures, creating frameworks of shared references even as other forms of media consumption become ever more fragmented. Ultimately, however, these modern myths are so compelling because they tap primordial human urges—for refuge, redemption, and harmony.”

The writer of the article is trying to explain why the movie is so compelling. What draws people to see a movie that is all myth? Clearly some deep human desires are being met. The Economist article mentions the “primordial human urges of refuge, redemption, and harmony.”

Reading the article, I couldn’t help but think of how the Gospel of Jesus Christ answers these universal desires of “refuge, redemption, and harmony.” At the beginning of 2016, none of us would be so foolish as to predict how things will be at the end of this year. We live in a very unsafe and uncertain world. Factors over which we have little or no control impact us profoundly. Where do you go for “refuge?” What do you do when your world seems to be collapsing around you? The Psalmist said he would not fear “though the world gives way” as “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46). In the difficult situations of life, we are encouraged to be still and know that the Lord is God. Similarly, we all need “redemption.” We mess up and don’t even keep our own resolutions, far less live a life according to God’s standards. This, again, brings us to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In great love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, so that we would be “redeemed” and forgiven through trusting in Jesus Christ who died for our sins and rose again. Here is true freedom and “redemption.”

All of us also long for “harmony” – a world where there are no wars; cities where there is no violence; homes where everyone lives at peace. Is such “harmony” possible?

I believe this “harmony” begins through knowing Jesus Christ who is the Prince of Peace. One future day “they shall beat their swords into plowshares” and “neither shall they learn war anymore.” Jesus Christ shall reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. So enjoy the movie, but also take time to reflect on where you go for “refuge, redemption, and harmony.”

Hertz returns to take over Porter Ridge football program

Porter Ridge football has found its guy.

Michael Hertz will leave his post at Independence as the school’s defensive coordinator, to take the helm at Porter Ridge for his first head-coaching job.

He’s no stranger to the program. Hertz ran the Pirates’ defense as an assistant on Blair Hardin’s staff during Porter Ridge’s two consecutive state championship appearances in 2011 and 2012 before joining Justin Hardin at Providence and following him to Independence.

“I feel fortunate, because this is a culmination of something I’ve been thinking about for a while,” Hertz said. “I never quite thought I was ready, and the last few years I started thinking more in terms of being a head coach. I had such great guidance with Blair and Justin. This time it seemed right.

“I got lucky a head-coaching position opened up at Porter Ridge, which is a place that is important to me. I feel blessed and lucky my first head-coaching opportunity is a place like Porter Ridge. Porter Ridge is a special place. They have a positive sense of community. Football is important not only in the community, but in to the school.”

The 41-year-old inherits a team that finished 3-19 (3-9 Southwestern 4A) during Zach Bevilacqua’s two years as head coach.

The Pirates are in need of fresh energy and a new vision.

He helped Blair Hardin take Porter Ridge from scratch to a state championship contender, and was key in assisting Justin Hardin in making Providence competitive after the Panthers endured three seasons without a winning record before their arrival.

Hertz played an integral role in Independence’s turnaround from a 2-3 start to rattle off a five-game winning streak, finish runner up in the Southwestern 4A, and advance to the second round of the state playoffs on the way to an 8-5 (5-1) record. Once he and his defensive staff simplified things, the defense began to play at a much higher level.

“He’s an outstanding coach, and he’s one of the most passionate coaches I’ve ever

worked with,” Independence coach Justin Hardin said. “What he’ll bring to Porter Ridge is stability and a work ethic and trust.

He’s demanding and cares about his players and wants them to do things the right way.

“I’m happy for him. I’m one of his biggest fans. I know he’ll do a great job. I’m excited for him and I’ll miss him and I know the kids and other coaches will also.”

Porter Ridge athletics director Ina Thompson said there’s excitement surrounding his return to the program.

“Things he said and the knowledge he exuded from the interview process, going into details into his systems and ideas it seemed that it would match up well to what our program has,” Thompson said. “It seemed he fit in with Porter Ridge.”

The Fairfax, Virginia native played linebacker and fullback at the College of William & Mary. Hertz, who has licensures in English, Physical Education and Social Studies, began his teaching and coaching career at James Robinson High School before he and his family moved to North Carolina for him to join Hardin at Porter Ridge in 2008.

He met with his new players for the first time Jan. 7.

“It was positive,” Hertz said. “The players are still hungry. Even though they haven’t had a lot of success on the scoreboard, they’ve continued to work hard, and they were eager to listen to what I had to say. It was a positive environment for me to walk into.”

Hertz added he also met with just the rising seniors to let them know how important

they are to him and his commitment to help them be successful in their final year with the Pirates.

Hertz said it is too early in the process to know who will be on his coaching staff, but hopes to keep as many coaches as possible. He is still figuring out the makeup and strengths of his team, so he is unsure of what his team will look like schematically on offense and defense.

That largely depends on personnel, but he and his staff will have a long time to figure out what formations and schemes best fit their team between now and August.

Hertz, who has taught English for 19 years, was named Porter Ridge’s Teacher of the Year in 2011. However, he is unsure of what he will teach at Porter Ridge.

“I’ve always said teaching helps my coaching, and coaching helps my teaching,” Hertz said. “At heart, I’m always a teacher. I think one of the reasons I’ve had success [is] I’ve been able to take that classroom mentality on the football field. You’re always teaching whether it’s a life lesson, how to block or tackle or how to write an essay.”

It’s too early to tell what the Pirates will look like in the fall, but with his past success it appears he and his staff will equip their players with a strong foundation based on fundamentals, knowledge and a good understanding of the game and their assignments.

However, he’s learned to keep things simple and let players play, helping to build several winning programs. That bodes well for Porter Ridge moving forward.

Smith to replace coaching legend John Lowery at Forest Hills

Cory Smith was recently named the next football coach at Forest Hills, and he has big shoes to fill. Smith replaces John Lowery, who spent 38 years at the school and finished his career with an overall record of 266-122, missing the playoffs only twice.

“Coach Lowery, that’s a name that all across the county and all across the state that people know who he is and know what a phenomenal job he did here,” Smith said. “If I could have half the coaching career he had, then I would be doing pretty good. The impact he had on this school and community is almost mind-blowing when you go back and look.”

Smith feels an understandable pressure replacing Lowery, but he won’t hesitate to call the former coach when he encounters challenging situations.

The 26-year-old Union County native and former Sun Valley and UNC-Pembroke quarterback knew this is what he wanted to do when he graduated from

high school, but had no idea it would happen this quickly. He’s ready to prove he’s not too young for the position, and hopes to get off to a strong start, so he can continue coaching for a long time.

“Our kids, the first time I met with

them as a whole, the biggest thing I want them to understand is everybody wants to win and I want to win just as much as the next person does every time I go out there.

I’m not saying it’s OK to accept losing, but I feel like there’s such a platform as a coach you’re on with high school football that you can touch those kids for the rest of their lives and the lessons they can learn,” Smith said.

Smith inherits a program that is fresh off an 8-4 (4-1 Rocky River) finish and first round appearance in the state playoffs. He served as an assistant coach on Lowery’s staff the previous four seasons.

He spent his first year with the outside linebackers before working with the quarterbacks the last three. He also was Forest Hills’ baseball coach for four years before stopping after last season to focus on football.

Smith, who teaches physical education at New Salem Elementary, will take the same teaching role once he goes full-time at Forest Hills next week.

He will be more hands-on offensively, but knows when there’s an important de-

cision to be made, regardless which side of the ball it’s on, he’ll be the one to make it.

Offensively, Forest Hills has operated out of a variation of the spread, and will continue to do so.

“I like spreading it out,” Smith said.

“Usually, we keep kids here that play well in space, and the kids do like it. It’s what they see on TV. I think it gives us the best advantage, spreading the field out and trying to make people play one-on-one in space with our kids who are usually pretty good athletes.”

Smith added he would like for his team get more physical up front when it comes to running the football.

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets return key pieces, middle linebacker Tyrese “Cookie” Marsh and defensive back T.J. Brewer. Smith plans to employ a 4-3 defensive scheme.

Smith said it means something to be a part of the Forest Hills football program, and he wants that to continue to be the case during his tenure as head coach.
