WAXHAW – Fred Burrell doesn’t believe denying a commercial project next to Cureton Town Center sends a message to the development community that Waxhaw isn’t open for business.

The newly elected commissioner believes adopting a project that people don’t want is much worse. “(It says) that we’re open for mediocrity,” Burrell said.

After months of deliberating, Waxhaw commissioners shot down a commercial project Jan. 13, that would have included a 16-pump gas station. Residents at the nearby Cureton subdivision were fine with the proposed restaurant and retail shops, but the gas station was a deal-breaker.

“Our neighborhood has been very unified,” Cureton resident Candace Definis said, noting how neighbors were concerned about the gas station’s effect on traffic and quality of life.

James Warner was the lone commissioner supporting the project.

“This is a reasonable submittal,” Warner said. “We all use gasoline. We all go to stores.”

Mayor Pro Tem John Hunt acknowledged he didn’t know how many gas stations are needed in Waxhaw, or if one more is too many. Hunt is certain that Waxhaw is at a point in its history that today’s decisions will shape the future.

Burrell looked at town land-use plans for the Cureton area and hadn’t seen any reference to gas stations being a preferred use. He said gas stations don’t provide an appropriate transition from residential and commercial areas.

“For me, the safety is not there,” Stewart said. “It’s a dangerous situation. There’s years before Highway 16 would be widened.”

John Ross, president of Eagle Engineering, said the applicant, Micheaux Resource Management, had tried to mitigate all concerns heard every step along the way. Ross said the developer was willing to work with the town to pay its proportionate share of any road improvements required by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Micheaux Resource Management applied for rezoning in November 2014. The site was zoned for single-family residential use, but future-looking land use plans call for commercial or town center-style use.

Commissioners held a public hearing in July 2015 and granted Micheaux Resource Management 90 days to work through concerns brought up by the community. Most concerns involved the gas station and the in-and-out nature of

One of the things he heard prior to accepting the town manager position last year was the town needed to improve its reputation among the business community.

“A lot of that had to do with some of the policies and ordinances that were in place, particularly on the development side that were maybe cumbersome, which the board is now working on,” he said.

The town will develop a plan for not only maintaining infrastructure but ensuring developers are putting quality infrastructure on to the ground.

Other focus areas will include construction inspections, code enforcement, engineering, neighborhood engagement and planning, stormwater management, erosion control, transportation and traffic control systems management.

“That is a tremendous amount of work for seven people,” Wood said of his development services staff.

The town may have to look at increasing staffing levels and spreading skills sets among existing staff.

“I can’t tell you how critical this is,” Wood said. “We can’t afford another Kensington Drive. We have got to put ourselves in a position where we are avoiding those sorts of things in the future.”

Development Briefs Waxhaw to improve downtown WAXHAW – The town won a regional grant this month that will lead to $1 million in pedestrian, bicycling, park and streetscape improvements to downtown.

Town staff learned the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization was awarding $1.2 million from the federal government for grants that would pay for alternative transportation projects.

Mayor Steve Maher credited Waxhaw for having plans in place that allow the town to respond quickly to grant opportunities.

While the grant required a 20-percent match, the town offered a 50-percent match to strengthen it’s bid, Town Manager Warren Wood said.

Here’s a summary of improvements from the grant: • Add bike parking and enhance striping, lanes and sharrows.

• Enhance walkways, paths, retaining walls and art in the park.

• New sidewalks on Broome Street.

• Add pedestrian active signals on Main Street.

• Realign parking, improve crosswalks and add new sidewalk connections.

WAXHAW – The town’s Millennial Task Force will provide an update to commissioners in April on how Waxhaw will recruit a new generation of residents, according to Main Street Manager Curt White.

The task force will consist of three staff and six community members. They’ll embark on an initial research phase, in which they’ll gather data, conduct focus groups, collaborate with the chamber and visit sites.

The Pew Research Center defines millennials as those born between 1981 and 1997.

They tend to be drawn to walkable communities with a variety of housing, White said.

One quarter of Waxhaw’s population consists of millennials, White said, citing the latest Census data. White said those numbers might not account for those who live at home.

Third-pary traffic study required for some projects in Waxhaw WAXHAW – A new policy will require a study of how a proposed development in Waxhaw will affect area traffic if it’s expected to generate 1,000 trips within 24 hours or 100 trips during peak morning or afternoon hours.

The N.C. Department of Transportation uses the analysis to determine the road improvements developers must make to mitigate traffic impacts.

The policy requires Waxhaw pick the thirdparty consultant to perform the analysis. Developers typically select the traffic consultant.

Indian Trail reviving economic development committee INDIAN TRAIL – After disbanding its Economic Development Advisory Committee in December, Indian Trail councilmembers have directed staff to create new bylaws and procedures for a new group.

Councilman Mark Wireman sought to disband the previous group, because he didn’t like how it didn’t report directly to the council

and wasn’t focused on what he deemed “appropriate business.”

“This town has not focused on economic development in five years,” Wireman said.

“Unfortunately, we had an economic development department that was directed to focus on the parks.”

Wireman said he would rather the committee focus on mitigating some of the impediments for bringing in larger projects, such as business parks.

NCDOT discusses proposed Rea Road extension project WESLEY CHAPEL – The N.C. Department of Transportation will share the latest on the proposed extension of Rea Road, from N.C. 16 to N.C. 84, and widening of N.C. 84 to Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road.

The 3.8-mile project will provide a more direct link from western Union County to Charlotte, as well as serve as an alternative to I-485. N.C. 84 will widen to four lanes, two in each direction.

The NCDOT will host a drop-in open house from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and a formal public hearing at 7 p.m. on Jan. 26, a Tuesday, at Graceway Baptist Church, located at 4700 MonroeWeddington Road in Matthews.

Helms Road could lure seniors WAXHAW – Paula Hamilton wants to annex 57.43 acres of county land off Helms Road into the town. The property, consisting of mostly woods and manufactured homes, could eventually yield age-targeted housing.

“We just think it’s a great fit to come into Waxhaw,” said Carl Fochler of Queen City Land. “These are folks who have extra money typically to spend.”

Town staff recommends rezoning the county land from light industrial and rural to single-family residential.

Barnhardt building business network for Indian Trail INDIAN TRAIL – Kelly Barnhardt, director of community and economic development for Indian Trail, has been gathering details on building space and land to update the town’s database of businesses.

While Monroe Union County Economic Development focuses on large industrial space, Barnhardt is looking in the 5,000 to 10,000 square foot range, which the town receives a lot of inquiries about.

Barnhardt has also been attending networking events around the region pertaining to real estate and economic development.

She’s also working with the Union County procurement director on a vendor fair designed to help smaller businesses learn how to do business with the town and county, which will be held April 6 at South Piedmont Community College.

Indian Trail revises tree policy INDIAN TRAIL – The town has relaxed policies requiring developers to replace the type and amount of trees they cut down.

“The issue we’ve been encountering is mostly nonresidential sites that are smaller than eight acres,” Senior Planner Gretchen Coperine said, noting residential sites usually have the space to plant trees.

Under the new policy, Coperine said the new Zaxby’s would have had to plant 62 trees on its 3 acres, rather than 226 trees.

Indian Trail preps for ‘event-full’ 2016

INDIAN TRAIL – Residents of Indian Trail and surrounding areas looking for something to do will have a lot of options to choose from in 2016.

The Indian Trail Parks & Recreation Department works each year to plan a handful of annual town events, as well as smaller programs that take place on a regular basis throughout the year.

“We have a lot of great things in store for 2016, and we know this is going to be another great year in terms of community events,” Susan Didier, the town’s events coordinator, said in an email. “We always get a terrific turnout, whether it’s for the Hop to IT! Easter celebration, the July Fourth parade or anything else we do, and we’re proud to be able to provide these moments for Indian Trail residents to come together and celebrate.”

Indian Trail hosts a variety of holiday events each year, such as an Easter egg hunt and Earth Day event in the spring, a movie series and Fourth of July parade in the summer, Trunk or Treat and annual pottery sale in the fall and a Christmas parade/tree lighting in December.

In addition, the town hosts monthly and periodic events including painting classes, clay workshops and a monthly open mic night. The town updates the dates for those special events each month and posts notices on the Indian Trail Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page.

“We’ll have a number of different programs and classes also happening throughout the year, so residents should keep an eye on our Facebook page and website to make sure they don’t miss out on what’s coming up next,” Didier said in the email.

County seeks election officials for primary, general elections MONROE – Union County is seeking individuals looking for approximately 18 hours of work to help with the polls during the March 15 primary election and Nov. 8 general election. Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, In response to Mr. Witherell's letter found in the Jan. 15, 2016 edition, I wanted to make an important clarification.

Donald Trump did not say that all Mexicans are rapists. He said, "Among all the illegal immigrants coming from Mexico were some pretty bad people, some of them were rapists, some of the were drug dealers.” – Donald Trump, page 14, “Crippled America.”

In Trump's book, “Crippled America,” he eloquently describes the fact that there are "351,000 criminal illegal aliens in our prisons that cost America over $1 billion a year."

He also is very clear of his support for legal immigrants that contribute positively to society. Living in America is a privilege.

Through a proper legal vetting process and an existence of a wall, we can filter out those will questionable intensions. This is vital in a country where our prisons are over capacity. We as taxpayers are fitting

the bill. We also cannot forget the massive amount of illegal drugs that are smuggled across the border that directly lead to crime.

I suggest that Mr. Witherell read Trump's book and not only depend on a media outlet's interpretation of his words, he may even end up voting for him.

Barbara Stackhouse Dear Editor, Mr. McElvy – I enjoy your newspaper and consider your editorials the only ones in Charlotte worth reading. I was most interested in your recent one about Donald Trump. Although I believe that Ted Cruz is by far the better candidate, I do enjoy watching Trump and especially like the way he makes the liberals’ heads spin.

I think you may have missed the point on the Trump phenomenon. I don’t think any of his supporters care what he says as long as it is not governed by a spineless concern over being politically correct. Thinking people are just tired of the perpetually offended and their control of too much of the media and far too many of the political types.

People are sick of a president who bows and scrapes before tyrants and who seems committed to join them as a “fellow tyrant.” Many of us are disgusted with pretend journalists who regurgitate the White House line – regardless of whether it is factual. Further, we are sick of people who join Hillary in saying “what difference does it make?” when brave Americans are abandoned by our government and left to be murdered in Libya.

Sure I would vote for Donald Trump – heck, I would vote for Mickey Mouse before I would vote for a deceptive Democrat!

We might be dying, but we’re getting rich too If you’re old enough to remember, there was a time when families sat down to eat dinner and, somewhere between your last bite of green beans and your first bite of meatloaf, that corded weapon hanging on the wall Jonathan McElvy started to ring.

There was no such thing as Caller ID back then, and you had no idea if it was Grandma or some goon from Greenville on the other end of the line pitching a steam cleaner that could miraculously suck germs off a soap bar.

I miss those days of dinner interruptions. I miss when our only annoyance came from a broke college kid calling to inform mom that her son had been named to the Who’s Who of Brilliant Booger Biters. For one night only, mom could buy a hard-cover album with my name on Page 393 for the low, low price of $39.95.

The reason I miss those days? Email. And by email, what I obviously mean are the 77 emails I received (on my work account) in one day from people and businesses that believe I have some very serious medical problems.

It all started with a company that proudly proclaimed its product offered the best heart attack warning system in America. When I didn’t click on that piece of spam, I promptly received a second email from the same Russian warehouse offering a product that could quickly heal me from my recent heart attack.

The only medical reason I’d have to fear a heart attack would be from utter paranoia brought on by the next dump of emails.

Apparently, I need a new drug that will defeat diabetes. I received four emails reminding me that I should immediately start taking an inventive new probiotic because there’s a chance I’m grossly overweight. I received another two emails from the Mayo clinic telling me they had found a cure for hearing loss. Worst of all, I was offered a product that will fix all my sagging skin, which seems odd considering I haven’t even had time to lose all that weight.

That’s OK, I quickly received another email that I could buy a product and have skin that looks just like Jennifer Lopez’s, which would be great if I were, you know, a woman.

In the sort of humor you can’t make up, the next email came from a company informing me they are legally allowed to sell cannabis pills in all 50 states, which is about the only pill I’d buy if I had heart disease, obesity, diabetes, no hearing and sagging skin.

Besides the obvious medical crisis I face, not all companies think I’m in such bad shape. I had email offers from four different

vendors, all notifying me that they would immediately deposit money into my account. A couple were lowball offers – one is sending me $562; another $961. The other two were more my speed. If I’ll hand over my bank account information, I can have checks for $15,000 and $250,000 deposited tomorrow.

That’s the reason I didn’t even buy a PowerBall lottery ticket last week. Combine all those deposits and I’ll pull in a cool $266,523 just tomorrow. And that doesn’t even count the seven straight days of $50 at Kohl’s and another $100 in free Macy’s dollars. Now we’re up to $266,973, and if the PowerBall winners took home a combined $500 million after taxes, I can have just as much as them in 5.13 years.

The problem I have with spam email isn’t that businesses are out there trying to make a buck. According to one (very small) piece of research on this topic, I found most companies can earn about $10 off of every 1,000 emails they send. So if they send 100,000 emails, they earn $1,000, and if these jokers send out 1 million emails, that’s an easy 10 grand. Without getting into too many details, these virtual mail warehouses send out millions upon millions of emails each day, based on lists they’ve either purchased or stolen from the Web, and it’s an enormous business.

In 2003, bureaucrats basically legalized spam email in something called the CANSPAM act. Once again, you can’t make up this irony: CAN-SPAM stands for “Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing.”

Without too much legal mumbo-jumbo, here’s what the act says: You have to allow people to unsubscribe to your emails and your subject line can’t be misleading. In our business, they call it “truth in advertising,” and email spammers are “required” to offer us a little truth, which means I’m on the brink of death, even though I’m getting a quarter million bucks tomorrow.

NCDOT TO HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING THE PROPOSED EXTENSION OF REA ROAD (S.R. 1316) FROM N.C. 16 TO WAXHAW- INDIAN TRAIL ROAD (S.R. 1008) IN WESLEY CHAPEL, UNION COUNTY TIP Project No. U-3467 The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing regarding the proposed Rea Road extension from N.C. 16 (Providence Road) east to Weddington Road (N.C. 84) on new location, and then widen existing N.C. 84 to Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road (S.R. 1008) in Wesley Chapel. The project is about 4.3 miles long.

The hearing will take place on Tuesday, January 26 at Graceway Baptist Church, located at 4700 Monroe-Weddington Road in Matthews, beginning with an open house from 4 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a brief formal presentation at 7 p.m.

The primary purpose of the project is to improve the mobility and connectivity of N.C. 84 in the project study area.

Interested citizens may attend at any time during the above hours. NCDOT representatives will be available at the open-house to answer questions and receive comments regarding the project. Written comments can be submitted either at the meeting or later by mail or email through February 26. The formal presentation will include an explanation of the location and design of the proposed alternatives, land acquisition and relocation requirements, and project procedures. The presentation and the comments will be recorded. All citizens comments received will be included in the alternative selection process.

INDIAN TRAIL – The $8 million earmarked for Indian Trail’s new town hall doesn’t reflect the project’s true costs, according to Interim Town Manager Scott Kaufhold.

Kaufhold recently shared a list of unbudgeted expenses with Indian Trail Town Council that could increase the cost, including furniture, telecommunication systems, building permit fees, landscaping and intersection improvements.

“These are things we require a developer to do on any other given project,” Kaufhold said.

Town staff also said project plans designed a month ago wouldn’t allow enough room to fit today’s staff without cutting someone in each department.

Town leaders were surprised by the revelations. Councilmember Mark Wireman called the information an “eye-opener.” Mayor Pro Tem David Cohn feels as if the people weren’t told the truth about the costs.

“People were kept in the dark on this,” Cohn said. “These are the things that it’s going to take some time to fix. We got to fix this.”

The town hall project is about one-third of the way through its schedule and budget, with steel going up now.

At one time, the town hall was supposed to be at least 25,000 square feet, but that was reduced to 20,000, with office space reduced while the

“Beyond a shadow of a doubt, it’s a very aesthetically pleasing facility,” Kaufhold said.

“There’s no doubt about that. But when you shrunk the size, we just lost, in my opinion, good functionality there.”

Kaufhold was promoted to interim town manager in December following Joe Fivas’s resignation. Kaufhold previously served as director of engineering and public works but wasn’t involved in the town hall project.

In December, the town council directed staff to work with the architect and builder to reduce the project’s costs by maximizing the building’s inside space. Kaufhold said they’ve reduced open spaces and combined meeting space to al-

low for five times the community space, as well as carve out sufficient room for existing staff.

“We’re trying to value-engineer this thing to get it to where we can maximize this space and get community use in there,” Kaufhold said.

“Obviously, we’re just trying to scale back – I’ll just call it for a lack of a better term – fanciness.”

Kaufhold told the council that staff will instruct the architect to proceed on design changes so that the town can receive a cost estimate that includes the unbudgeted expenses. Until then, Kaufhold isn’t able to determine the project’s break-even point.

“We’re trying to move quickly and efficiently to make some type of improvements without

Two incumbents who supported the town hall project were not. This prompted Fivas to resign as town manager. The new council directed staff to a look at cutting costs.

Cohn said he, Stanton and Wireman can’t stop the town hall from happening, since too much has been invested in the project. But they are not going to run the project into the ground, either.

“For anybody that’s worried or hearing a rumor that we’re going to gut this building, it’s just not true,” Cohn said. “We’re going to deal with what we were dealt with and make it the best we can. We may take out a $10,000 chandelier, marble staircase or something like that and hope to put more space into the building “

BOE members acquire roofing bid requests, emerging needs funding still in limbo

Three Union County Board of Education (BOE) members presented money transfer requests to the Union County Board of Commissioners (BOC) at the commissioner’s Jan. 19 meeting that might have left some BOE members disappointed.

BOE member Melissa Merrell and vice chairman Leslie Boyd served as representatives for the BOE at the meeting to present two requests: to address overages on two roofing bids and to request the reallocation of funding from the Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts and the Internet Protocol (IP) platform camera projects to address “emerging needs” set forth by the BOE’s Facilities Committee.

BOE member Gary Sides also was in attendance, but did not address the board. The BOC began requiring the BOE physically attend a BOC meeting when asking for money transfers for BOC members to ask specific questions about the requests.

Merrell requested the BOC transfer funds to accommodate overages for bids for both Unionville and Porter Ridge elementary schools.

Unionville had an overage of $240,789, with a bid deadline of Jan. 23, and Porter Ridge had an overage of $160,650, with a bid deadline of Feb. 13.

UCPS requested the transfer come from the East Elementary School roofing project, which had an original allocation of $1,002,900. That allocation was already reduced in December 2015 by $189,195 for other roofing projects.

After both the December and January reduction requests, the remaining balance for East Elementary would be $412,266.

The district has approximately 14 roofing projects on schedule before East. BOC members questioned the BOE’s plan to fund East Elementary’s roofing project. Merrell said the board hopes to have savings on the upcoming 14 roofing projects that might replenish East’s funds.

BOC members unanimously approved the reallocation of funds for the two roofing bids.

However, they were not as optimistic about the BOE’s request to transfer funds for emerging needs, which included “priority items” left over from the 2014-15 budget, emerging needs in the 2015-16 budget and any other emerging needs.

The BOE asked commissioners to reallocate the funds originally on the capital plan for Benton Heights and the IP platform for those needs.

Boyd explained the BOE chose Benton Heights because the estimate of $1.89 million for the school renovation in the CCEP, the district’s long-term capital plan, was no longer accurate, as the estimate was from 2008. She said the cost per square foot had increased, which would lead to a higher overall cost that she expected to be around $3 to $3.5 million.

The BOE plans to place the project instead on a capital bond to be taken to a vote by the public in November. Essentially, since the current allocation for Benton Height is about 50 percent less than the estimated amount, the BOE wishes to move the project to a later date. Boyd

said they didn’t want to complete the project in piecemeal.

Boyd also said district staff is reevaluating capital needs based on a population estimate and report presented by Jerome McKibben last month.

Commissioners wondered if the McKibben report might reveal they don’t need to renovate Benton Heights because elementary school enrollment is down.

Regarding reallocating IP platform money, Boyd argued although the BOE had urged for the update for the “safety and security” of students, they already had many safety procedures in place. She also said the IP platform change was more of a move toward “adaptability” and would exceed the limits of the current DVR platform cameras.

Boyd said if UCPS bought the IP platform, they would gradually phase cameras into middle schools, then high schools and elementary schools.

The vice chair also said they’ve looked into other “pots of money” to help address those emerging needs other than Benton Heights and the IP cameras, but couldn’t pull money from other sources.

Commissioner Richard Helms said he did not feel comfortable moving money away from the IP platform project and questioned the urgency of some of the items on the list, such as replacing bath partitions.

Boyd said she questioned the facilities committee about the list’s urgency herself, but felt items presented a need for resolution.

“You want this board to take $2 million from a Title I school and reallocate it and strip an IP platform that y’all beat us about the head that it was so critical and it was important and that we had to have it,” said one commissioner. “Now, all of a sudden, this Title I school and the safety of our children is no longer critical – that the partitions of the toilet are more critical?”

Commissioners also asked if the excess DVR cameras could be used in Exceptional Children classrooms if the IP platform went through. A group of disgruntled parents urged for cameras in EC classrooms last year after their children were allegedly abused in those classrooms. Boyd suspected the IP cameras would be the best option for those classrooms.

Multiple commissioners did not support moving funds from those two capital projects and felt the requests should have occurred during budget discussions last year.

Boyd pointed out the BOE asked commissioners for a $2-million “emerging needs” fund that was rejected.

Commissioners felt if the BOE had presented the list of emerging needs then, they would have had a different outcome, calling the fund a “halfhearted” request. They felt the emerging needs concerns needed to be discussed in upcoming budget discussions.

The BOC unanimously voted to table the emerging needs request until budget discussions.

Commissioners felt Tuesday’s discussions illuminated the boards’ need to talk and plan with one another.

Education Briefs UCPS recognized by state for greater access to AP classes The College Board and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction honored Union County Public Schools for increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) course work, while also maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning 3 or higher on AP exams.

UCPS was one of two North Carolina school districts to earn a place on the AP District Honor Roll and one of 425 districts across the U.S. and Canada, according to a news release.

“I want to celebrate this honor with our students, teachers and principals,” UCPS Superintendent Mary Ellis said in the release.

“When students are prepared for AP exams in high school, it means that they were exposed to academic rigor and a high level of learning in elementary and middle school.”

The honor roll is based on data from 2013 to 2015 that shows increased participation and access to AP; increased or maintained percentage of exams taken by black, Hispanic and American Indian students; and improved performance levels from 2013 to 2015.

All UCPS traditional high schools offer AP courses, with about 2,400 students taking at least one AP exam in the 2014-15 school year Approximately 66 percent of AP students earned a score of 3 or higher on one exam.

The percentage of black, Hispanic and American Indian students who scored a 3 or higher

increased from 49 percent in 2014 to 51 percent in 2015.

Students place on national exam Area students participated in the National Classical Etymology Exam and made high marks.

The exam is designed to test students’ knowledge of both Latin and Greek derivatives and their usage in the English language, according to a news release.

The 2015-16 school year is the sixth official year the National Junior Classical League has sponsored this online exam.

to bring attention to struggling students through accountability measures, but the test scores did not meet the proficiency the law mandate, which caused some states, including North Carolina to rearrange academic standards so more students could pass, according to N.C. Sen. Joyce Waddell.

The new legislation allows greater flexibility for teachers and state leaders through placing less of an emphasis on testing.

The act requires standardized testing in math and English for third-through-eighthgrade students, but states have greater flexibility about how and when the tests are administered. States will lose federal funds if they don’t attempt to improve the bottom 5 percent of schools but states can set accountability goals under federal guidelines.

A provision in the act aims to increase funding for “experienced educators,” according to a news release, and North Carolina will receive an additional $24 million annually for professional development and retention of teachers.

The law will take effect in 2017.

I discovered Pandora and reconnected with my original break up song

I am part of the “Flashing 12” generation. You know what that means, right?

We are the generation that never figured out how to set the clock on our VHS recorder (for those of you who forRev. Tony Marciano got – VHS were those big tapes we stuck in a machine to watch videos. They preceded DVDs and Netflix).

You can imagine my wonder when I discovered Pandora. It was great. Growing up in the 70s, I decided to listen to that wonderful “1970s” easy listening music – Hall and Oates, Gordon Lightfoot, etc.

One day I was enjoying the music when my favorite “break up” song came on.

The year was 1975. I was dating my first girlfriend. I got into John Denver music because she liked John Denver music. I bought two of his records and played them because that was what she liked.

Unfortunately, things weren’t going quite as well as I had hoped.

The pastor invited the youth over to his house for a Sunday night Bible study and sing along. I was singing while she was “messing around” with some other guy in the youth group. It was bad.

During that time, the band Ace came out with the song, “How Long Has This Been Going On?” One of the lines is, “But I can’t help but have my suspicions, cause I ain’t quite as dumb as I seem.”

Other lyrics are, “Oh, your friends with their fancy persuasions, don’t admit that it’s part of a scheme, but I can’t help but have my suspicions, cause I ain’t quite as dumb as I seem. And you say you were never intendin’ to break up our scene in this way, but there ain’t any use in pretendin’, it could happen to us any day” then back to the chorus, “How long has this been going on?”

She came over to my house to break up with me. I still remember what she was wearing. She said the classic line, “You’re a nice guy but this isn’t working.” I listened, smiled and watched her drive off.

I was told her mother’s heart was broken. Her mom liked me more than the new boyfriend. I just wasn’t as exciting as the new guy. He was fun; I was serious. He was the class clown. I was the guy who never got in trouble. She married that guy. I never listened to John Denver songs again. A few years later, we were all

in a friend’s wedding. Needless to say, it was awkward.

When she broke up with me, I felt rejected. I remember going to help my father with a project we were working on in the garage. He tried to comfort me as he watched his son going through his first breakup. It hurt. It hurt like no one’s tomorrow. You want to die; you actually think you’re going to die.

You don’t.

God doesn’t break up with me when I don’t measure up. He’s not surprised when I mess up as if I caught him “off guard.”

He doesn’t say, “Didn’t see that one coming.” He doesn’t walk away because I’m not cool, not funny or not perfect. He doesn’t “roll His eyes” in shame when I embarrass Him with my behavior. In fact, He says, “I will never leave you or forsake you.”

I still laugh when that song comes on the radio. It is my “ultimate” break up song. I’m also glad that God won’t break up with me.

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Sides and seniors build Forest Hills into power program

Forest Hills’ boys basketball coach Matt Sides was looking for a mantra to challenge his team, so he turned to the Old Testament book Nehemiah for some inspiration.

The story says Nehemiah had a vision from God to build a wall to protect his people, but he needed his temptations to fall first.

Sides and his players related that to their program, because they needed to persevere through distractions and adversity to build it into something successful.

“In those moments of temptation and trial remember, don’t come off your wall,” Sides said. “One of the things we always said was, ‘Stay on your wall. Keep building. There’s going to be a breakthrough.’ It’s the idea of holding true to your vision.”

They built a wall. The Yellow Jackets became a fortress, playing together as one. In turn, Forest Hills defeated Monroe, its nemesis at the time, to reach the third round of the state playoffs after falling to the Redhawks three times earlier that season.

That win got the proverbial monkey off Forest Hills’ back, as they made it to the third round for the second year in a row last season on its way to a 20-7 (8-2 Rocky River) finish. But the Yellow Jackets still have unfinished business. Seniors Jordan Blakeney, Desmond Lindsey and Zaccheus Rorie want to go out on top with a conference championship and a state title.

They are the first graduating class Sides, who is in his fourth season at the helm, has seen all the way through during his tenure at Forest Hills.

“I don’t have kids, but if I had kids I’d want them to be those three guys,” Sides said. “Character, this group is so much fun to be around. Their enthusiasm is contagious. They pick and they argue and they laugh and they cut up and they work. This group has so much fun.

“It’s such a big deal for us, because it’s all about culture for us and the culture we have in our program. These guys have set the stage for our culture, because this rubs off on our underclassmen. They

treat each other like brothers. I love them to death.”

Sides said their character has helped them reach their potential as basketball players, which has ultimately led to team success.

“I’m lucky to coach them,” Sides said.

Forest Hills (14-2, 3-0 Rocky River), which sits atop the conference standings with a one-game lead over Mount Pleasant and Monroe, will go as far as Blakeney, Lindsey and Rorie can take them. Lindsey, a 6-foot-3 wing, averages 14.9 ppg, 8.9 rpg and 2.3 spg. Rorie, a 6-foot-1 guard, averages 14.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg and 3.3 apg. Blakeney, a 6-foot-1 guard, averages 11.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 3.1 apg.

“Deep down inside of me there’s a tremendous thirst,” Sides said. “I want to send these guys out with a chance to win a championship. I felt like last season I let them down. These kids have busted their tail for four years, and they’ve literally given me every-

thing they possibly could have given me. I want to send them out on a high note.”

Sides said the mantra for the team this season is “No regrets.”

“If we live the idea of not having regrets of being in every practice and being in every moment and enjoying it and having fun and working hard as we possibly can everything else will take care of itself,” Sides said.

He wants his players to be able to say at the end of the season, regardless of when it concludes, they have no regrets.

“The bottom line is 20 years from now they’re going to remember the relationships they had and the culture they formed,” Sides said. “They won’t remember how many wins and losses they had.

They’ll remember how our program made them feel and the things they did for people.”

Rorie, who played quarterback on the football team, takes a similar leadership role on the hardwood. He looks out for his teammates, and makes sure they’re doing their best on and off the court.

Blakeney said the highlight of the season has been watching Forest Hills grow as a team and into a family. He added they’re playing together, sharing the ball, which has translated into wins.

“As a team, we don’t ever want to consider ourselves as individuals,” Blakeney said. “You always want to be one, and that’s what coach Sides preaches every day, being a team and together, so we try to put that in our foundation as a team and play like that every day.”

“We had to build on our relationship,” Lindsey said. “We have each other’s backs.”

Lindsey said Forest Hills’ 64-63 win over Parkwood Jan. 17, 2014 was integral in the team coming together. Blakeney hit the game-winning shot, but Lindsey said everyone on the team chose Blakeney to take it.

Lindsey is the enforcer on the team. The paint is his area, and he like Rorie and Blakeney, fights for this team.

That’s what the Yellow Jackets do. They fight for one another, and they are playing with a sense of urgency. That sense of urgency has gotten them to two deep postseason runs and their current fivegame winning streak, but Forest Hills is thirsty for more.

Weddington wrestlers building for success on the mats

Weddington’s wrestling team lost key pieces from last year, but it’s building for a successful future.

“We’ve had a lot of guys in and out with injuries,” Weddington coach Shane Rimmer said. “This next month, we’ll start our conference schedule, get some guys back, so really the first half of the season has been individual focus and we’re kind of starting to focus on our team stuff through January and make a push for the state playoffs.”

Senior Parker Walton, a Duke signee, is a key component in helping Rimmer and his staff build a strong foundation to propel the Warriors to success this season, but ultimately, for years to come.

Walton, who competes in the 120-pound weight class, will leave a lasting legacy not only on the mats at Weddington, but around Union County and at the state level. He has dominated opponents with a 73-10 record.

His highlight of the season came when he won the 44th annual WRAL Wrestling Tournament in Raleigh Dec. 19. He defeated NCHSAA 3A state champion Phil Daub

of Enka and NCHSAA 4A state champion Ethan Hnasko of West Forsyth on the way to win the event.

“This season has definitely been more relaxed with a lot of the pressure off my back,” Walton said. “A lot of the school work has dropped off a little bit after getting into college. You definitely get to enjoy it more than the previous years.”

Walton made quite the jump from last season to this season, moving up from the 106pound weight class. It appears a state title is well within the realm of possibility for him, as he looks to go out on top.

Sophomore Tyrie Houghton is an up-andcoming wrestler for the Warriors, who gives Rimmer excitement for the future. Houghton, who competes in the 170-pound weight class has beaten five state qualifiers this season.

“It’s a big difference from freshman year,” Houghton said. “It’s not as hard. You’re a lot closer strength-wise, because there’s not as big of an age difference. I’ve gotten a lot better at defending.”

Houghton is reacting quicker and is lighter on his feet this season. He wants to improve overall as a wrestler, and hopes to make it to the podium at states this season.

Robert McGill, a 152-pound wrestler, Evan Burke, a 195-pound wrestler, and 220-pound all-conference honoree Alex Lubinecky also are key to Weddington’s success. Freshmen Jared Papke (132 pounds), Tanner Cox (113 pounds) and Alec Orrel (106 pounds) show promise as first-year starters.

Rimmer said the Southern Carolinas is a competitive conference. The goal for the Warriors is to finish in the top two of the conference and make it to the state playoffs, which they have missed out on as a team the past couple of years.

“It’s a pretty tight race,” Rimmer said. “We’ll see how it all turns out. Piedmont is always a top team in the conference of course. They’re pretty solid, but as for everyone else it’s a pretty tight race between all the other teams.

“It’s just going to be a matter of who comes out on top. There’s going to be a lot of tough, tight matches that are going to come down to small things and we’ll see what happens down the stretch.”

Rimmer said it will be interesting to see how Weddington comes together as a young team.

“Once we get healthy and those young kids keep developing it’ll be fun to see what we can do,” Rimmer said. “Right now, it’s really the

potential. We’re so young.

“At the same time of having four or five good, solid leaders that have been around and having 15 freshmen on the team a lot of it is having so many young kids on the team that want to be here and want to work hard. They improve every day.”

Rimmer added it will be fun to see what the Warriors look like at the end of the season – and for years to come – with all the young athletes coming up through the ranks.

Piedmont wrestling looking to maintain dominance

The Southern Carolinas Conference has belonged to Piedmont’s wrestling team since 2009.

The Panthers didn’t even hiccup when they made a head-coaching transition from Todd Stokes to Jamie Belk. Piedmont (20-3) once again owns the league, but it appears the rest of the conference is fighting to play second fiddle.

Belk, who teaches business and also is the cooffensive coordinator and running backs coach for the football team, is well-versed in the culture of the program and what it took to build Piedmont into a perennial power, despite it being only his second year at the helm. He was an assistant to Stokes for 10 years and has seen the program transform from a meager seven kids all the way into a deep and dominant force.

“We built it up,” Belk said. “We’ve been fortunate to keep a good thing going. It’s been good.

Todd and I worked together. Even when I was an assistant we did a lot of things together.”

Stokes and Belk developed a strong farm system with their middle school program, run by Jim Swayney and John Collins. The kids have a solid experience combined with a strong foundation of fundamentals, which makes them ready to compete at the high school level once they arrive.

It gives them a significant advantage over league foes and other area opponents; most freshmen have little to no wrestling experience.

This year, Piedmont is built around its senior

captains – Austin Bagley (138-pound weight class), Thomas Flitz (160-pound weight class), Austin Purser (145-pound weight class) and Brett Underwood (132-pound weight class).

“Those four have been very instrumental in the leadership and direction of this program,” Belk said. “They’ve been very instrumental in making sure the program is maintaining the right direction. They’re continuing the legacy that the guys before them began.”

Piedmont lost in the regional finals of the state playoffs last season, which provides plenty of motivation for the Panthers in their quest for a state championship. They’re a more veteran team after returning nearly their entire roster except for one wrestler, who graduated.

Parkwood girls’ basketball off to strong start

Parkwood’s girls’ basketball team sustained its first conference loss of the season when it fell 38-35 on the road at Monroe (8-2, 3-0 Rocky River) Jan. 19. However, the Rebels (12-4, 2-1 Rocky River) appear poised to be a force in the league again after last season’s 15-10 (9-2 Rocky River) finish.

Coach Kate Edwards has plenty of talent at her disposal, including two of the area’s top post players, senior forward Brittany Autry and junior Baylee Morton. Autry is averaging 17.5 ppg and 12.2 rpg, while Morton is averaging 12.1 ppg and 10.5 rpg.

“Both of them have a lot of size and a lot of athletic ability,” Edwards said. “They’ve been intricate roles in what we do the last three years.

We have really tried to build our offense around them, and I think it’s kind of obvious.”

Opponents try to double-team the post, but Morton has developed a jump-shot just inside the arc, which makes her even more difficult to defend.

Autry dominates the boards and has good hands. Edwards said she’s proud how Autry has developed into one of the area’s elite post players.

Sophomore guard Molly Setliff (8.3 ppg) is improving, and emerged into a reliable player on the perimeter.

“If you have a strong post player and talented

guard play you can win a lot of games at this level,” Edwards said. “Our guard play has historically been the stronger part since I’ve been here. It’s starting to level out where we have strong posts and our guard play is starting to come back along as well.”

Parkwood’s improved guard play couldn’t come at a better time, as the Rebels get into the meat of conference play. However, it must continue to improve if they hope to be in the mix for the league title.

“We’re not there yet,” Edwards said. “We’ve still got some things to work on.”

For example, Parkwood must improve its free-throw shooting. The Rebels missed 16 free throws in their 39-35 win over Forest Hills Jan. 15. Parkwood can’t afford to leave so many free, unguarded points off the board. Those points can – and will – be a significant difference maker as the season goes on, so the Rebels must take advantage of their trips to the charity stripe.

Edwards said she enjoys how the girls get along well together, and are friends outside of basketball. It’s a friendship that translates onto the court.

“They’re starting to play more to what our philosophy is about finding the good shot, and maybe giving up a shot of your own for the betterment of the team,” Edwards said. “I have to commend them on that.”

Parkwood visits Mount Pleasant Friday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

“We’re a lot more mature and goal-oriented and mission oriented,” Belk said. “Our first goal is to always win the conference title. It’s not a oneman show. No one can do it alone.”

If Piedmont beats Sun Valley Thursday, Jan. 21, it will wrestle Marvin Ridge and Weddington for the conference championship Thursday, Jan. 28.

Belk said he laid the goals out in three phases for his team – win the conference, then regionals, then states. But it can’t have one without the others.

Flitz said he enjoys how this team gets along.

Practices are fun, and everyone is about helping one another improve.

“We do a good job supporting each other and

cheering each other on whenever we’re on the mat,” Flitz said.

Bagley said the highlight of the season has been the opportunity to help develop the younger wrestlers on the team. The strength of this team is undoubtedly its leadership.

“All of us seniors, we’ve all been on this team for four years, and we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” he said. “We know how to get the job done.”

The Panthers feel pressure to sustain their success. Purser said he and his teammates just have to wrestle, and hope the results take care of themselves.

“We feel like we’re going to be a lot better than last year,” Purser said.

“We’re expected to win,” Underwood added.

“We’re expected to not get pinned. We’re expected to work hard.”

Piedmont doesn’t take its opponents for granted, but Underwood said they go into matches expecting to win.

“If you don’t expect yourself to win, then who is going to expect you to win? It all starts with yourself,” Underwood said. “We’re expected to win conference. No one else is talking about any other school having a chance to win. It’s all about, ‘Is Piedmont going to win again?’”

The Panthers have kept a spirit of complacency from setting in by maintaining a drive to win and be successful on a daily basis. They take that approach to practice, and it translates to wins when it counts.

Weddington boys stay unbeaten in conference

Weddington’s boys’ basketball team (13-4, 4-0) maintained its perfect resume against Southern Carolinas competition with a 58-44 win over Piedmont (9-8, 0-4) Jan. 19.

Junior guard Ryan Schwieger led the Warriors with a double-double performance of 23 points and 12 rebounds, and senior forward Tucker Snyder added a double-double performance of his own 14 points and 11 rebounds to help put the Panthers away.

“Those two are all over the place,” Weddington coach Gary Ellington said. “We started the game without a lot of energy. We didn’t play our style of basketball.”

The Warriors threw up several three-pointers in the first quarter, going an abysmal 1-13 from behind the arc in the opening period. Piedmont packed in the zone on defense, forcing Weddington to settle for long-range shots early.

The Panthers took advantage of the Warriors struggles, building an 18-7 lead going into the second quarter.

“We just didn’t play the right way,” Ellington said. “They jumped out on us.”

Once Ellington settled his players down and got them to stop jacking up threes, the Warriors got into a rhythm offensively. Combine that with Weddington’s suffocating defense, and Piedmont gradually wore down on both ends of the court as the Warriors eventually cruised

to victory.

“We pressed a little bit in the second quarter and the rest of the game played good defense,” Ellington said. “We were able to turn the game around with our defense.”

The Warriors held Piedmont to 15 points the entire second half, denying the Panthers the opportunities they had in the first half.

“I feel like our defense is outstanding,” Ellington said.

It’s hard to argue with him. Weddington has kept its league foes in the 40s this season, which makes up for a developing offense especially on poor shooting nights.

“We’re hanging our hat on our defense with the hope the offense will work itself out by the end of the season,” Ellington said. “I tell our guys if we continue to play defense the way we are and the offense starts clicking we’re going to be hard to beat.”

“I’m happy with the result. I’m happy with the way the guys are playing. Playing hard is never an issue with these guys. Figuring out the offense will be the difference.”

The Warriors are solid offensively except for when it comes to outside shooting (26-percent from three-point range), which might be to its detriment later in the season.

Weddington claims a one-game advantage over Cuthbertson in the conference standings with its win over the Cavaliers proving be more and more important as the season goes on.

The Warriors travel to Sun Valley (10-7, 2-2 Southern Carolinas) Friday, Jan. 22.
