Website offers free â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cleanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; diet plan, workouts

With all the fad diets out there, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to find one thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to stick to. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the inspiration behind Clean Eats 101, a lifestyle website founded by local women.

Certified nutritionist Macy Covington and Union County resident Leigh Smoak teamed up to create a website that offers free nutrition advice and exercise plans. The site focuses on â&#x20AC;&#x153;cleanâ&#x20AC;? eating, which Smoak refers to as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;least amount of processing as possible.â&#x20AC;?

A few years ago, Smoak found Covingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s small peer group online, where she posted clean recipes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had been following what she was cooking for 6 to 8 months,â&#x20AC;? Smoak said.

Smoak was a stay-at-home mom, who had tried many other diets, but wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t finding the results she wanted and a plan she could stick to.

After following Covingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recipes, she felt better and realized it was a diet she could retain.

The two women connected and shared their passion for clean eating, resulting in their website, Clean Eats 101, which launched in May 2015. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to spread the word about clean eating and how it has really changed my outlook on healthy living,â&#x20AC;? Smoak said.

The website includes three features: more than 300 â&#x20AC;&#x153;cleanâ&#x20AC;? recipes; about 45 workouts, including a 21-day workout program for those wanting to kick start their exercise plan; and a grocery cart function that allows users to select recipes for the week and the site combines all ingredients into a

consolidated shopping list.

The women want the site to be easy, realistic and managable for the average person, Smoak said.

They encourage users to start an 80/20 diet plan, in which Macy Covington theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re eating 80 percent clean meals, so they can live without guilt or a feeling of defeat.

Smoak said she made small changes when initially starting the program, such as swapping a bag of chips for an apple or making her own spaghetti sauce, and felt energized. She naturally wanted to start exercising again after Leigh Smoak changing her diet.

Smoak encourages new users to start small and set realistic goals, such as swapping a salad for a meal once of week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Little things can make a difference,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The women will continue posting new recipes and workouts weekly and expect to include yoga workouts in February.

Development Briefs Stallings approves repair shop STALLINGS â&#x20AC;&#x201C;Â Stallings Town Council voted Jan. 11 to allow an automotive repair shop at a strip mall along East Independence Boulevard.

Michael Todd, of Charlotte, owns the property.

He sought a conditional use permit to lease the property to John Martinez, of Indian Trail.

Town staff recommended the use, but only on the condition that roll-up service doors not be allowed on the front of the building. Town Planner Lynne Hair said roll-up doors would alter the character of the retail-oriented building.

The council conceded to allow the door consist of a paneled window with wooden frame.

They also required conditions recommended by the planning board, which included no overnight parking in front of the building and no outside storage of vehicles or tires.

Rocky Crenshaw voted against the measure.

Work storage to be discussed MONROE â&#x20AC;&#x201C;Â Union County leaders are continuing to set boundaries on home-based businesses in the suburbs.

A public hearing will address proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1 at the Union County Government Center, located at 500 N. Main St. Residents who work at their home would be able to store materials on their property if they

meet screening, setback and size requirements.

This would apply to the Râ&#x20AC;?40 zoning district.

Waxhaw looks to improve park WAXHAW â&#x20AC;&#x201C;Â The Waxhaw Parks & Recreation Department is looking for a firm to help update H.C. Nesbit Park with more amenities.

Baseball, softball, soccer and T-ball fields span the 40-plus acres. Future amenities could include additional fields, bathrooms and concessions.

Waxhaw wants the plan to coincide with parking improvements by May 31, 2016, according to its request for qualifications. The town is accepting qualifications until Feb. 1.

Waxhaw is also looking for a firm to create construction documents for the 16.5-acre park to be

combined with the YMCA off Kensington Drive.

PulteGroup lands Wieland deal PulteGroup announced Jan. 15 that it completed an agreement to buy homebuilding assets of John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods.

Wieland builds luxury homes in five Southern cities, including Charlotte. New home communities include The Gates at Ansley, opening this month in Waxhaw, Rose Hill in Weddington, and McCullough in Pineville.

PulteGroup expected to acquire approximately 7,400 controlled lots and 280 homes in backlog for about $430 million to $450 million. Â

Self-storage units approved WAXHAW â&#x20AC;&#x201C;Â Morningstar Storage has earned approval from the county to build a three-story building with indoor self-storage units at Rea and Tom Short roads.

The Matthews-based company garnered support from the nearby Hunter Oaks subdivision by promising to build a wall separating the building from the neighborhood.

The 106,605-square-foot building will go next to the future Mecklenburg Swim Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s indoor swim facility.

Managed lanes moving forward CHARLOTTE â&#x20AC;&#x201C;Â Despite increased pressure from critics of the I-77 Express Lanes project, the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization reaffirmed the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commitment to a managed lanes strategy during its Jan. 20 meeting.

Lake Norman towns wanted to abandon the strategy as a means to canceling a 50year contract with a Spain developer to manage the toll lanes.

Cities such as Charlotte and Monroe didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to backtrack on the project, because it would delay dozens of others, including U.S. 74 and I-485 toll lanes.

Where have you been the last five years, Mr. Wireman? According to Union County Weekly, you stated, â&#x20AC;&#x153;This town has not focused on economic development in five years.â&#x20AC;?

On the contrary. We have two fairly recent car companies, Nissan and Chrysler, along Highway 74, a gas station on one corner of Sardis Church Road and Aldi on the other corner, not to forget Michael Alvarez has opened an eatery. Further along Highway 74, there is a Murphy Oil gas station in the Walmart Plaza, and an auto repair shop and Zaxbys both nearing completion. A bit further along Highway 74 on both sides of the street, there are several eateries built in the last few years. Along Old Monroe Road, there is a car wash, automobile supply store and a Family Dollar. Let me not forget Sun Valley with the 14-screen movie theater, restaurants and shops, and in Austin Village, there are several shops and other businesses.

Indian Trail also is building a town hall.

Indian Trail is a good town to live in.

Please, be positive and recognize the good things that have happened here, parks as well as development.

There’s nothing wrong with bandwagon fans I don't know why I still have a Facebook account. Every time I log on, it seems there’s another comment made, article shared or post “liked” that makes my skin crawl.

But it does remind me of my friends’ birthdays, so for that, I am forever grateful Hannah Chronis to Mr. Zuckerberg.

A few days before the Panthers destroyed the Arizona Cardinals to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl, “The Phoenix New Times” – a free, weekly publication serving the greater Phoenix area – released “10 reasons to hate the Carolina Panthers.” It started circling around Facebook like wildfire.

Let me start by saying I’m not the Panthers’ No. 1 fan. I didn't grow up going to games, and I definitely wasn't searching for tickets when they went 2-14 five seasons ago. In fact, I’ve been to more games during the last two seasons combined than I have leading up to those years, and my Instagram account shows more than one picture where I’ve hashtagged something like #keeppounding or #dabonem…. whatever that means.

What the author of the Phoenix New Times article doesn't realize, though, is cheering on the Panthers is bigger than wins and losses. It’s bigger

than wearing a No. 1 jersey. It’s bigger than dabbing and pounding and 45 touchdowns.

It’s about Charlotte – better yet, the entire Carolinas – coming together to support one team in the greatest state in the Union (I’m talking about North Carolina, just incase there’s any confusion).

When the Panthers do well, Charlotte does well, North Carolina does well and South Carolina does well. Small businesses selling NFL gear feel the impact of increased business. Uptown hotels sell out on Saturday nights. Locally owned bars that otherwise would’ve been empty are spilling out the door on Sunday afternoons. People start paying attention to our neck of the woods and realizing Charlotte – and the surrounding area – is a great place to live, work and play.

The dynamics of this city are changing. Charlotte isn’t placed in the same boat as Memphis or Birmingham anymore. It’s now a city of worldclass restaurants, higher education, museums, theater, ballet, gigabit Internet – and if the Panthers success puts a spotlight on our Uptownturned-Carolina-blue as one of the finest cities on the East Coast, I’ll wear my Cam Newton jersey any day.

So when The Phoenix New Times claimed “the Carolinas suck as a location,” “their fans are rednecks” and “their barbecue is overrated” (don’t get me started on that one), instead of sharing such a sad excuse for journalism on my page with a snarky comment, I took a step back and realized that: a) the author is generalizing and insulting an entire population because of a sport, which is just

downright sad and b) he’s clearly never spent any time in North Carolina and for that, I sincerely pity him.

We have booming cities with culture and class like Charlotte and Raleigh. We have hipster cities like Asheville where dreadlocks are more common at work than suits and ties. We have the Outer Banks. We have snow when it’s winter, sun when it’s summer, growth when it’s spring and a myriad of colors and pumpkins and hay rides when it’s fall. We’re the home of Michael Jordan, Earl Scruggs, Andy Griffith, Ava Gardner and Zach Galifianakis. And let’s not forget Bojangles.

Cam Newton and the Panthers are drawing national attention to our great city (and state).

I respect those Panthers fans that have stood behind our hometown team since 1995, and I understand how every Tom, Dick and Harry who claims he’s a Panthers fan is, at the very least, frustrating for those who have been “pounding” since Day 1. But what’s the alternative? A city of folks who don't care, who look away, who don’t buy tickets to sell out the stadium, who let publications like The Phoenix New Times say terrible things about a franchise and its people.

The Panthers’ success is our success, and I hope that on Super Bowl Sunday, every single person in the entire state is decked out in black and blue, and dabbing at every touchdown.

A new book exploring Mexican migration in the South contends that growing anti-immigration sentiment in Charlotte didn’t originate in urban or rural areas, but in suburban communities in neighboring counties.

Julie M. Weise, an assistant history professor at the University of Oregon, heavily draws on Indian Trail to explain this dynamic in her book, “Corazon de Dixie: Mexicanos in the U.S. South since 1910.”

Weise focused the book on five geographical areas: New Orleans (1910-1939), Mississippi (1918-1939), Arkansas Delta (1939-1964), rural Georgia (1965-2004) and Charlotte (19902012).

Weise devoted the last chapter, dubbed “Skyscrapers and Chicken Plants: Mexicans, Latinos and Exurban Immigration Politics in Greater Charlotte, 1990-2012,” to immigrants moving to the suburbs.

The Charlotte business community welcomed immigrant men in the 1990s and 2000s.

They were highly sought after for construction and factory-oriented jobs.

But once they started coming with families to settle in white neighborhoods just past county lines, there seemed to be more resistance to immigrants pursuing middle class dreams.

The suburbs bought into the argument that immigrants were consuming taxpayer dollars – an idea popularized during the 1990s in California, Weise said.

She believes people moved to suburbs to have their children in a certain kind of school or to avoid busing and racial issues pertaining to the city.

“I think the issue of immigrants taking taxpayer dollars, which I think was truly invented in California in the 1990s, came to these suburban areas in the South,” Weise said during a book discussion Jan. 21, at the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte. “I don’t see it as a Southern thing. I actually see it as western ideas coming to the South.”

She showed a map of an elementary school

in Indian Trail, pointing to a nearby trailer park consisting of mostly Latinos and a neighborhood of $300,000 homes. Children from both ends of the spectrum attend the school.

One immigrant told Weise that her family left their Indian Trail trailer park for an apartment in Monroe, where they felt more welcomed.

Weise wrote the Latino families “threatened the area’s homogeneity.”

“The trailer park where they lived marred Indian Trail’s neat landscape of recently constructed single-family homes,” Weise wrote.

“Their employment in chicken plants, factories and low-end service jobs disturbed visions of a singularly middle-class community. Their racial difference disrupted spaces imagined to be nearly all white. And their consumption of public services, particularly seats in school classrooms, undermined the very political underpinnings of exurban development: that white middle-class families had an exclusive claim to partake of the services their tax dollars funded.”

The chapter about Charlotte has 189 footnotes. Some allude to stories in the Charlotte Observer, Monroe Enquirer Journal and La Noticia. Others point to at least three dozen interviews with Charlotte-area people, many of whom were from Indian Trail and Monroe.

Weise credits North Carolina as the driving force behind her research. She worked in Los Angeles during the early 2000s on issues related to immigrant rights.

She was intrigued to learn undocumented immigrants were getting driver licenses in North Carolina, but not her native state of California, widely considered to be more liberal.

“Like so many of us, the history I had been exposed to taught me that all of the racial issues in the United States are in the South,” Weise said.

Her book tries to add more context to that narrative in terms of Mexican migration.

“When it was just local Southern communities working this out, immigrants fared better,” Weise said. “Once these national politics came into play, with California messages, that’s when more punitive ideologies came to the South.”

North Carolina needs more young coders to fill jobs

North Carolina had 19,389 open computing jobs in 2015 – 4.5 times the average demand rate in the state, according to the National Science Foundation, but universities only produced 1,098 computer science graduates in 2013.

As society leaps into the “digital world,” some worry the state and the nation aren’t preparing young people to fill current and future computer technology positions.

Most schools don’t offer computer science classes or AP Computer Science courses. North Carolina allows computer science to count as a core graduation requirement, as well as a core admission requirement for higher education institutions, but doesn't have pathways for students to pursue the interest.

One in four U.S. schools offer computer science classes, according to a Gallup research study, but the same study found 91 percent of parents want their students in those courses. Many parents don’t know how to plug their children into coding.

Experts say there has been a greater push for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers, but computer technology and coding pathways have been overlooked.

Only 66 schools, or 13 percent schools with AP programs, in North Carolina offered the AP Computer Science course in 2013-14. There are fewer AP exams taken in computer science than

in any other STEM subject.

Yet, experts have found advanced computer science course can set student career paths – especially minor groups. The College Board found women who try AP Computer Science in high school are 10 times more likely to pursue the career in college; black and Hispanic students are seven times more likely.

UCPS schools, including Wesley Chapel, Western Union, Poplin, Hemby Bridge, Marshville, Wingate, Sun Valley, Porter Ridge, Sardis, Indian Trail, Antioch, Marvin, Sandy Ridge, Fairview, Stalling, Unionville and Rocky River elementary schools, and Piedmont, Sun Valley and Marvin Ridge middle schools engaged in “The Hour of Code,” a one-hour introduction to computer science on Dec. 7 through Code. org, a nonprofit devoted to expanding computer

science options for students. The organization designed the day to “demystify code” and introduce students to computer science technology.

“It’s a process that’s going on all over the world, to teach children about computer science and coding,” Wesley Chapel third-grade teacher Kim Mayfield said in a news release. “In this world, computer science is critical. Not only do they need to learn how to use computers, they also need to understand how they work.

“In most cases, before you learn computer science, you’re in high school or in college. They’re starting in third grade and in kindergarten. By the time they run through this, when they get to a certain age, they can move forward and code on their own. It’s demystified for them.”

The computer science industry will continue to grow, which inevitably will require more skilled workers. The tech sector is looking into reaching more young people to fill in coding positions.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics claimed there were approximately 800,000 open computing jobs in the nation in 2015 and predicts there will be more than 1 million computing job openings by 2022 in every industry and every state.

“There were 250 job openings for junior software positions from the last 90 days,” said Wes Lawson, campus director of computer science school The Iron Yard Charlotte. “They’re not going away. It’s a growing part of the economy.”

Iron Yard looked into the Charlotte market and has found small businesses to large corporations in the area are looking for software develop-

ers. Lawson suspects the increased need for coders won’t end soon.

“There is an unmet need,” he said. “There is not enough supply of willing and able software developers and engineers in our market.

“It’s not likely to change any time soon. We are vey much a digital society. Students now in high school and college are digitally motivated and always have access. But those applications and website can’t run themselves. The next big things will be heavily reliant on software and code or they will be software and code.”

A Georgetown University Center for Education and Workforce Report of STEM found that 67 percent of computing jobs are outside the tech sector and the jobs are becoming increasingly needed.

More industries are in need of coders and IT professionals, but young people are opting for other careers. Local businesses are struggling to find candidates, even though employers are willing to pay entry-level programmers an average of $65,000 per year.

Computing science can be a lucrative career, particularly for adolescents who aren’t on a four-year university pathway. Computer science degrees are no longer a minimum requirement for many programming jobs, as employers test applicants on skills to solve business issues with code.

Experts predict the lack of skilled coders will continue to grow in the next 10 years and young people might need to step into the hot seat.

Big donation helps teachers receive supplies

MONROE – Approximately 160 Union County Public Schools teachers received supplies for their classrooms on Jan. 21 at Monroe High School, thanks to Classroom Central, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that provides school supplies to children who cannot afford them.

Classroom Central serves six North Carolina school districts, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union counties. It supports schools with more than 50 percent of students with free or reduced lunch.

Classroom Central has a “Free Store” in Charlotte, where teachers of high-poverty students can receive free school supplies. Starting last year, the nonprofit launched a Mobile Free Store truck that works like a “pop-up shop” to provides a free kit of supplies.

“It can be difficult for teachers to visit the free store for a variety of reasons,” said Lauren Johnson, Classroom Central director of communications and marketing. “Some of them have their own children, they’re coaches after school or have second or third jobs.”

Johnson said many teachers don’t receive all their necessary supplies because of low school system budgets and would have to “dig into their own pockets” to buy supplies if Classroom Central did not provide them. She said teachers’ families would have to cut back in order for their classrooms to have the necessary supplies.

through teachers, because they often know the needs of the students and develop a strong relationship them, Johnson added.

She added the supplies are particularly important during the second semester, as student population changes from August and less people think about school supplies.

All of Classroom Central’s contributions are through private donations and Johnson said the best way for an individual is through financial contributions.

She encourages Union County businesses to partner up with Classroom Central to sponsor the nonprofit’s efforts in the community.

“We can help connect their employees with volunteer opportunities and help them understand the need in the community,” she said.

Classroom Central’s mission won’t end until all children have the supplies they need and they’re always looking for creative way to better sere their clients.

The event funds the Weddington Warrior Promise Capital Campaign, which will identify and finance athletic complex improvements across the greater Weddington campus.

The event includes dinner, dessert, entertainment, a silent and live auction and a raffle.

Students performed selections for Producing Artistic Director at Adventure Theatre MTC Michael Bobbit; Amanda Flynn, a professional actress, singer and musical theatre educator; and composer/lyricist Matthew Lee Robinson.

“Porter Ridge’s production of Lion King JR. was executed with such precision and energy,” Flynn said in a news release.

Porter Ridge student Taylor Reed was one of 319 students who made it to the future Broadway Junior shoots call-back for “howto” choreography videos for soon-to-be released Broadway Junior musicals. The shoots will be taped in New York City this summer.

The final cast will be determined later this year. These videos will be used in schools across the country and internationally.

Porter Ridge student Ashline Arnaud and Luke Pyle were named to the Junior Theater Festival All-Stars, including “outstanding” performers attending the festival, according to the release.

Politicians have done the hard thing, now it’s up to us Three times in the last week I’ve read articles pontificating on the subject of the “Christian” vote. Each of these opinion pieces labeled various groups within the Christian faith and identified “their” candidate. This prompts some questions – and some opinMark Harris ions – of my own.

Here’s the first question: By what means were these groups of Christians connected to “their” candidate? The author’s opinion? Surveys? Polls?

Without cited evidence clearly demonstrating that a particular religious sub-group is supporting a particular primary candidate, there is no validity to the belief that Christians who admire Franklin Graham are going to vote for Donald Trump or that attendees of less-than-orthodox Protestant churches are going to vote for Bernie Sanders.

Second question: Is there a hidden political agenda behind these alleged pairings? The Marco Rubio campaign seized upon remarks by Russell Moore of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention printed in “Roll Call” Jan. 8, in which Moore

paired Trump with the “Jimmy Swaggert” wing of the GOP, Cruz with the “Jerry Falwell” wing, and Rubio with the “Billy Graham” wing. Just two hours after the publication of Moore’s remarks, the Rubio campaign issued an email including Moore’s quote. While it is doubtful Moore was in collusion with Rubio’s campaign, it is odd that the numbers of self-identified evangelical GOP voters who have told pollsters they support Trump would be labeled with the name of a disgraced televangelist as their descriptor.

While I am not a Trump supporter, I find this characterization unfair and Moore’s evidence for it – that Trump attracts Pentecostals who believe God financially rewards believers – unsupportable.

Also quoting Moore in a “Charlotte Observer” op-ed was history professor Thomas S. Kidd of Baylor University. In his piece “Ted Cruz Exposes a Christian Divide,” accessible at www.charlot teobserver.com/opinion/op-ed/article54951935. html, Kidd quotes Moore’s analysis of the GOP factions and adds his own. Kidd asserts that Cruz has “exposed fractures” between different kinds of evangelicals. Kidd concludes his analysis by calling on Moore’s “Graham” wing to remind Cruz that the glory of God and the salvation of sinners will never happen through electoral victories or earthly governments. Interestingly, this same piece has appeared in various newspapers with much harsher Cruz-bashing headlines, according to posts on Kidd’s Facebook page. Kidd’s Facebook page also includes a post announcing

he is serving on Rubio’s religious advisory board.

Political agendas aside, I have a major problem with Kidd’s logic. Ted Cruz, nor anyone else running for president, is claiming that his or her election will usher in the Kingdom of God or save sinners. This is a straw man – a refutation of an argument not actually being advanced by an opponent. This particular straw man is frequently put forth by those who think Christians, or at least Christians who don’t support their preferred candidate, belong on the sidelines of civic life.

You can dress a straw man in elegant clothes, even perhaps in clerical robes, but at the end of the day, he is still made of straw.

The issue is not whether electing a particular candidate will accomplish God’s ultimate redemptive purpose for mankind. The issue is whether or not a believer in God’s ultimate redemptive purpose still has a responsibility to exercise his civic duty in a free Republic according to his or her conscience. I sometimes hear from people who dramatically announce they are ready to go to jail for their faith, or flee the United States. I always want to shake these people by the shoulders and ask them if they have voted in a primary, given any candidate their financial support, or attended a precinct meeting. Exactly three people from my precinct attended the Mecklenburg County GOP precinct meeting last year: myself, my wife, and one other lady who was getting involved for the first time after reading Dr. Ben Carson’s book “One Nation.”

Cuthbertson boys learning to get tough

Marvin Ridge’s boys’ basketball is making strides in coach Adam Haines second season at the helm. The Mavericks have improved from missing the playoffs and a 9-14 (3-7 Southern Carolinas) finish last season to a 12-8 (3-3) start to the 2016 campaign with a postseason berth still on the table.

“We lost a number of close games last year, where we were just a handful of plays away from getting five or six more wins,” Haines said. “It seems like, this year in those games, that we’ve made a handful of plays, and some of those have allowed us to win a few more games.

“We still got a little ways to go, because in our conference, every game is going to be close. You have to be good every night. There’s not a whole lot of difference between the teams. I don’t think anybody is going to blow anybody out on a regular basis.”

Haines likes the toughness of his team, which is huge in helping him build Marvin Ridge into a competitor within its conference, and beyond.

The Mavericks have clawed back from double-digit deficits multiple times this season, including wins over Parkwood and Piedmont. Haines said he knows even if his team doesn’t play well, it will continue to fight until the end.

Most recently, Marvin Ridge completed its regular season sweep of Piedmont when it defeated the Panthers, 51-48, Jan. 26.

Marvin Ridge is getting a strong collective effort from multiple players this season. It’s usually a different guy or a handful of players who shoulder the scoring load, depending on the matchup.

Senior forward Anthony Demarco, senior guard Jackson Helms, junior guard Emeka Emezie, junior forward Cameron Jones, senior guard Tommy Maher and Bryce Carnohan have all stepped up at critical moments this season.

However, despite their balanced attack, the Mavs lack a go-toguy.

Haines said Marvin Ridge is taking a one-game-at-a-time approach to its schedule.

“We’re not the type of team that can look past other teams and expect to win,” Haines said. “We don’t have that kind of offensive fire power. We don’t have a dominant big man or anything like that. We have to take each game in isolation.

Coach Mike Helms was concerned his team lacked the edge it needed early in the season. He doesn’t want his team to play dirty, but he wants them to play hard and be aggressive. The Cavaliers are learning to be tough, which they can take a lesson from in their neighbor, Weddington.

The Warriors, who completed their regular season sweep of Cuthbertson when they won, 65-43, Jan. 26, were tougher in both games. They were quicker to loose balls, battled harder for rebounds, and played with a greater desire and intensity on defense than the Cavaliers did in both meetings.

There’s not a gap in talent between the two ballclubs and they are pretty even on paper, but give Weddington credit. Gary Ellington’s crew wants it more, and until Cuthbertson finds that edge and mental toughness, the Warriors will be its nemesis.

“Sometimes what you got to have is a player step up and make plays,” Helms said. “Your x’s and o’s aren’t always working. We’ve tried to mix our offense up a lot more. I think we’ve done a pretty good job of that.”

Helms liked the way his team was playing since its first loss to the Warriors, and the Cavaliers followed their initial letdown to the Warriors with four straight wins, all of which were over league foes.

They took care of the ball during that stretch.

Cuthbertson isn’t where Helms wants it to be, but hopes his team will continue to improve as it gets into the second half of conference play and into the postseason.

Seniors forward Tyrik Dawson, big man Steven Ruszala and Ryan Mobley are carrying the Cavaliers with their solid play and leadership, but Cuthbertson needs its supporting cast to elevate its play.

The Cavaliers have made strides defensively, but Helms wants his players to improve on the offensive end. Cuthbertson is grinding most games out in the 50s; Helms said they need to score in the high 60s.

Metrolina Christian Academy girls stay in upper half of conference play The road never gets easy for a team once it enters league play, but Metrolina Christian Academy’s girls’ basketball team (7-9, 4-3 Metrolina) has fought its way to fourth place in the conference standings with four regular season games remaining on the schedule, and a chance to finish with an overall winning record and reach the state playoffs still on the table.

“The girls have worked extremely hard, and they have really bought into the system we’ve tried to put in,” Metrolina Christian coach JarMark Parker said. “I’m really pleased with the leadership we have. Our team just loves each other. Our team really cares for each other, and that’s been huge for us.”

Sophomore point guard Bella Sheprow has made a significant impact on both ends of the court with 13.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.9 apg and 4.1 spg.

“Bella works extremely hard,” Parker said. “She’s worked so much harder than she did last year. Bella is playing against some pretty tough competition right now.”

Parker added Sheprow’s dependability as a scorer and ball-handler have been huge for the Warriors this season.

“She’s got a basketball IQ,” Parker said. “Obviously, she can get better. She’s just a sophomore, but she’s just got a drive for the game. She really has a different focus for the game than any girl we had on our team in the past.”

Senior forward and co-captain Hannah Gordon, an all-conference player, has provided key leadership this season. Junior forward Caitlyn Logan (12.3 rpg) has been a force on the boards, as the conference’s leading rebounder. Parker said senior guard and cocaptain Caroline Wallace is the unsung hero, who does whatever she is asked to do to help the team.

Parker said the strength of this team is its ability to adjust to the challenges it faces in games.

“We just got a pretty solid overall team that does a lot of little things OK,” Parker said.

He thinks his team will improve the more experience it gets, and he expects the Warriors to make the state playoffs.
