Grant could bring library into 21st century

MONROE – Union County’s Main Library could receive a big facelift this fall.

The library is seeking a $27,685 planning grant to conduct a space needs assessment of its 43,000-square-foot main campus to “professionally create a 21st century library space that can meet the evolving needs our diverse population of users,” the library wrote in a memo to Union County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioners approved the application to the State Library of North Carolina within its consent agenda on Feb. 15.

The grant would be used to obtain a consultant, who would look at the library’s floor space and determine if, and how, the space is working for the library’s patrons, according to Nina Meadows, library director and project manager.

The consultant would host community forums, with at least one in Spanish, and consult staff during the evaluation and would present a proposed floor space for the library.

There has not been any formal assessment of the Main Library space since its renovation in 2003.

Meadows said she noticed librarygoers were adapting the library space and resources to what was needed rather than

the floor space being user-friendly. The wooden tables throughout the library hold four people. Most people use the Main Library as a collaborative workspace, but need tables for more than four people, so patrons are forced to reconfigure the space.

“The space is not mobile. Everything we have is static and stationary,” Meadows said.

The Main Library has 25,775 patrons – mostly young families and Baby Boomers – who call the library their “home library,” according to the application. In the last fiscal year, the Main Library had 229,148 visitors and this fiscal year shows a 3-percent increase in visitors and registered users.

The grant, if awarded, would help make the library into a 21st century floor space, rather than its 20th century current plan, Meadows said.

She hopes the renovation could attract more use of the library and the community would realize all it has to offer because the consultant could revamp the way items are presented.

The library will submit its application by the end of the month. The State Library of North Carolina will grant awards in early June. If awarded, the library plans to finalize the consultant’s onsite schedule

by August and Consultant Kim Bolan, of library consulting firm Kimberly Bolan & Associates, will start the evaluation

by September or October.

Business Briefs Hobby shop benefits from Panthers MATTHEWS – Bob and Linda Williams have seen increased business at their sports card and memorabilia shop, AAA Collectibles, since the Carolina Panthers began its pursuit of a perfect season.

Interest intensified as the NFL team earned its second trip to the Super Bowl.

“With the Charlotte-based team, our football business has exploded,” Bob said. “It’s up 20 to 40 percent over the last five years. The success just magnifies that.”

The Weddington residents fed into the frenzy by offering Super Bowl 50 mini helmets, rally towels, banners and game balls. Shoppers can also find autographed jerseys, 16-by-20 glossy photos and logo helmets.

Williams said as many as 20 sports card shops have closed in the Charlotte region over the years. His shop, which has been operating since 1992, is one of two he knows of in the area.

Weddington resident opening salon at Sharon Square in SouthPark CHARLOTTE – Denise Antonacci Salon will open a 1,500-square-foot space later this year in Sharon Square.

“Sharon Square is an in ideal setting for our salon and clientele,” the Weddington resident said in a press release. “The character, walkability and easy access of Sharon Square were very appealing to us and set it apart from other locations that we considered.”

The salon, which operates under the Jon Ric name, is moving to Sharon Square as part of its rebranding.

“Denise and her salon have developed a tremendous following and will be an attractive complement to the restaurants, shops, apartments and offices that make up the community,” said Brian Roth, vice president of marketing for Pappas Properties, in a press release.

Sharon Square’s Solis apartments overlook restaurants and shops, such as Whole Foods Market, Rusty Bucket, Dogwood, Corkbuzz, Sun Trust Bank and The Bar Method fitness studio. A two-story Starbucks will open there, too.

News Briefs Monroe Water announces seasonal opening of city lakes

MONROE – Monroe’s Water Resources Department announced Lake Lee and Lake Twitty will open for the season on March 1. Lake Monroe will open March 2. The season will run to Nov. 1.

Hours of operation are sunrise to sunset, and no activities are allowed outside allotted hours.

Lake Lee levels are below normal due to flash board damage caused by winter flooding. A contractor has been hired to make repairs, but the repair schedule will be contingent on rainfall and corresponding runoff amounts. Boaters are urged to use caution when boating due to lower water levels.

Weddington town council to hold public hearing, egg hunt WEDDINGTON – Weddington town council will hold a public hearing on March 7 at 7 p.m. at town hall, located at 1924 Weddington Road.

The hearing will discuss a text amendment to the town’s zoning ordinance to correctly reference the “setbacks from streams” section of the ordinance. The town encourages the public to attend, and a copy of the proposed ordinance is on file in the town planner’s office.

The town also will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. at town hall. Children 11 years old and younger are invited to attend. Games, refreshments and the Easter Bunny will be on site. Attendees also are asked to bring a canned good to donate to a local food shelter for a chance to win a prize.

Monroe Parks & Rec begins spring sports signups MONROE – The Monroe Parks & Recreation Department is registering for spring sports. Adult spring softball registration is Feb. 29. The open league team fee for men, women and church teams is $350. Youth baseball league registration runs March 1 to 31. A copy of the participant’s birth certificate is required to participate. Indian Trail business launches new water bottle product INDIAN TRAIL – Indian Trail-based 50/50 Projects launched a new water bottle to aid in crisis releif in Flint, Michigian in alignment with the company’s mission to donate 50 percent of all proceeds to non-governmental organizations.

Education Briefs Western Union Elementary students show veterans love WAXHAW – About 600 students at Western Union Elementary School made Valentine’s Day cards for soldiers who serve in the United States military.

Music teacher Cathy Reese, who is in her first year at the school, suggested sending the Valentine’s cards to wounded soldiers after conducting a similar project at her former school, Indian Trail Elementary. “The first thing we do is help the students understand who the veterans are and why they’re important to our country and why we need to continue to respect them,� Reese said in a news release. “I just think it’s important to do, and it’s a great character lesson for my students.�

Students could send cards to specific family members in the military forces, as well as the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville.

Marine Chaplain Richard Mitchells, Commandant Larry Sloop and Jr. Vice Commandant Kellis White came to the school Feb. 8 to visit with students and pick up the cards. “It’s just a great thing for the guys,� White said in the release. “Like any other Marine away from home, they look forward to mailcall. It brightens up their day while they’re lying around recovering. The kids were really enthusiastic about it. I’m impressed that someone has taken the time to tell these kids about our wounded soldiers who gave up part of themselves for their freedom.�

Kensington welcomes visiting Chinese language teachers WAXHAW – Last month, the sixth Asia Society Chinese Learning Teachers Institute welcomed 73 Chinese language teachers from 43 schools in 20 states.

This year’s theme, “From Learning Objectives to Learning Outcomes,� aimed to help teachers reflect on the integral role of assessment in Chinese language teaching.

With guidance from master teacher Weiling Wu and the Asia Society Chinese Language Teaching Fellows, participants polished their skills in using formative and summative assessments to realize the desired language learning outcomes in their classrooms.

Some teachers visited the Mandarin Immersion Programs at Kensington Elementary School and observed lessons, talked with students, discussed instructional strategies with teachers.

Shiloh students ‘meet’ Dr. King MONROE – Shiloh Elementary School students watched a performance “Meet Dr. King,� an entertaining educational program that retells the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Feb. 10.

The school’s PTA brought the production to students through the Invest-A-Kid fundraiser, according to the school’s website.

Scholarship deadline on Friday Union County high school seniors must submit applications for Union County Education Foundation’s scholarship by Friday, Feb. 26.

The application can be sent to Union County Foundation, P.O. Box 909, Monroe, NC, 28111 or dropped off at 400 N. Church St. in Monroe.

The foundation awards $1,000 to $2,000 scholarships to seniors attending college or university in the fall.

The application requires a 500-word maximum “Teacher Tribute,� a letter of recommendation from an administrator from the student’s high school, SAT scores, a transcript from the student’s high school and a list of extracurricular activities. Winners of the scholarship will be asked to create a two-minute teacher tribute video and send it to the foundation, as well as attend the May 5 “Sweet Salute.�

Legislative candidates serve as ‘teachers for a day’

The North Carolina School Board Association urged all school districts to invite candidates running for state House and Senate seats to come and be a “teacher for a day.”

Vice Chairman Leslie Boyd drafted a letter, which the Board of Education (BOE) approved, inviting incumbents and newcomers to spend time in the classroom with Union County Public Schools teachers and students.

“The good thing about this is that we always hear our teacher say, ‘We wish we could have our legislators spend a day in our shoes and understand exactly what it is we’re asking for.’ We think that’s a great idea,” said Boyd. “Our teachers and educators work really hard and I think it’s important that the legislators are there and at the General Assembly they understand what they’re fighting for.”

The BOE claimed they would not endorse any candidate who participated in the event, but each candidate would receive positive press for UCPS through an online photo gallery.

Legislators and candidates who visited classrooms from Feb. 15 to 26 included: NC Senate District 35 candidate Matt Daly; NC Senate District 36 candidate Robert Brown; State House Rep. Mark Brody; NC House District 69 candidate Gordon Daniels; Sen. Tommy Tucker, NC Senate District 36 candidate Amy Blake and NC Senate District 36 candidate Paul Newton.

“I think it’s important because we oftentimes hear educators that say there are legislators who are working on bill and they have no idea what’s going on in the classroom,” Boyd said.

Daly spent the day with Sun Valley High School students and teachers on Feb. 19, serving as a teacher’s assistant, passing out papers, and speaking with students about the importance of voting.

“What led me to participate is I have a good friend who was an English teacher in North Carolina and started teaching and ended up moving out of the state because the teaching situation wasn’t terribly good and he was offered a higher salary,” he said.

“In conversations I had with him, I realized some of the issues that our schools and our teachers are facing.”

Daly said he wanted to see firsthand the challenges within the school system, such as the way the funding works in North Carolina schools, how funding could aid teachers, and how state and county actions affect the daily classroom.

“What restrictions can we lift, what tools can we give them so that (educators) can be more effective in what is they’re doing?” Daly said.

He felt his visit could help him “fine-tune” legislative policy and requirements in the classroom and how they impact teachers.

Daly, 27, also shared with students the importance of the individual vote.

He told a story about how the U.S. went to war with Mexico in 1847 and Texas becoming a state was largely influenced by the vote of one farmer in Indiana. He said a farmer cast the deciding vote for his state representative, who went on to elect the state’s senator and that senator was the deciding vote in whether the U.S. went to war.

“It was one farmer who had such a huge impact in that way,” Daly said. “It’s obviously not very common, but one vote can cause a huge shift.

“Just going out and conscientiously voting and being an educated voter and doing that can really have a pretty big impact, especially on the county level,” he said.

The BOE plans to continue welcoming legislators to delve into the county’s issues.

The board will host a legislative breakfast, where state representatives and senators will hear from the BOE about its concerns and needs.

CATA to host dinner theater to attend conference

MONROE – Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA) High School's Theatre Academy will host a dinner theater to showcase "The Diviners" performance at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, at the CATA Performing Arts Theatre.

The Diviners' Dine-Away Diner will help raise funds to send the cast to the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in Greensboro from March 2 to 6.

The cast earned a spot at the conference after advancing to state finals during a regional festival from the North Carolina Theatre Conference.

This is the school's third state championship in five years.

CATA will compete against 19 other shows from 10 states at SETC and students will have the opportunity to audition for major theater programs from across the country.

This year, the CATA PTSO will host a dinner to help raise $15,000 for the Theatre Academy to attend SETC. The cost includes more than $7,000 of festival registration fees, hotel costs for four nights and transportation for 35 students and several chaperones.

“This is a sizable amount of money per student, and there are additional monies we need to raise on top of our already scheduled trip to NYC over spring break and expenses for our spring musical, 'Ragtime,' in April,” CATA Theatre Director Larry Robinson wrote in a letter. “It is our hope that we can raise enough money so that students do not have to shoulder a financial burden to participate.”

CATA received some donations from the Union County Arts Council, the city of Monroe and individuals to afford the trip.

Tickets for the performance only, which begins at 7 p.m., cost $7 and can be purchased at the door.

Marvin schools run to raise money, honor Aten

WAXHAW – Marvin cluster runners will be back for a fifth year next month to raise funds for their area schools.

The fifth annual Run for the Ridge 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will be held Saturday, March 12 at 8 a.m., at Marvin Ridge High School. It will benefit Marvin, Rea View and Sandy Ridge elementary schools, Marvin Ridge Middle School and Marvin Ridge High School.

“It’s for specific needs for specific schools,” said Terri Patton, race director and mom of a Marvin Ridge High School senior.

Money generated from the runners will cover cost of the event. Sponsorship dollars from area businesses will be distributed amongst the five schools.

Runners will complete an out-and-back course along Crane Road and Constitution Drive, with the finish line on Marvin Ridge High’s track. The “fair weather” course and the rain course, which was used last year, will remain the same from last year’s race.

Music will be along the course and at the start and finish line, and runners are advised to stay to the right-hand side of the road, as vehicles might be on the road during the run.

Festivities will be featured at the finish around the track, including food, vendors and games.

This year’s race is particularly special for the Marvin community, as it will be dedicated in memory of Jeff Aten, a computer teacher at Sandy Ridge, fellow runner and volunteer, who passed away unexpectedly on March 25, 2015.

His oldest daughter Lauren, who will run this year’s race, is a Marvin Ridge graduate and his daughter, Katie, is a senior. Aten coached girls’

volleyball and lacrosse at the high school and was a major part of the Marvin community.

Aten’s wife will speak at the beginning of the race and race organizers will have a moment of silence to honor Aten’s memory.

“I encourage everyone who Mr. Aten touched in any way, to come out and support this year’s event,” Patton said. “Not only is this a wonderful community event that raises money for our five local schools, but a wonderful way to show Coach Aten and his family just how much we care.”

Along with raising funds for Marvin cluster schools, the race will collect new and gently-used running shoes to benefit local area children and adults, as well as new twin size sheets to benefit local child with Beds for Kids.

Patton said she is still looking for more runners, volunteers and sponsors before next month’s race.

Race fees for students are $15 each for both the 5K and fun run. Fees for adults are $25 for the 5K and $20 for adults prior to March 1. After March first, adult fees will increase to $35 for the 5K and $25 for the fun run. All entry fees include a T-shirt, sports bad and raffle ticket.

Problems with Charlotte’s non-discrimination ordinance

Lately North Carolina’s legislators have come under attack for taking steps to defend traditional marriage and religious liberty. The religious liberty exemption for magistrates is under attack, and criticism swelled around the very thought of the Mark Harris legislature intervening in the just-passed Charlotte city ordinance defining LGBTQ as a protected class and permitting transgender people to use their bathroom of choice, whether they present as the opposite sex or not. As George Will aptly noted, the “sore winners” of the gay rights movement will not rest until every American is forced to endorse the gay lifestyle and all of its increasingly confusing associations as to gender “fluidity.”

Political battles aside, who are the real losers here? As a follower of Christ, I can only define my concerns in terms of what happens with real people. The terrible loss to real people in real-life situations is enormous when government attempts to intervene to forcibly change cultural norms. Consider the following examples regarding situations that will be impacted by the new

Charlotte city ordinance, and the unintended consequences that will result.

Super Bowl Sunday, as always on Sunday nights from Decmeber to March, First Baptist Church hosted “Room in the Inn,” in which we shelter homeless guests from Urban Ministries in our facilities. A co-ed Sunday School class volunteered that night to prepare and serve dinner, assist, and provide breakfast and sack lunches for the departing guests. Two men stayed overnight, including one First Baptist employee. On this evening, a transgender person was part of the group who is anatomically male but dresses as female. Female guests at the shelter, a vulnerable and fragile population, expressed their discomfort with the situation. A compassionate resolution was reached in which those directly involved in the situation were able to assess it, make decisions, and take into account the feelings and concerns of all involved.

If this particular event had occurred after April 1, 2016, when the city ordinance goes into effect, my church could have been subjected to a fine or lawsuit if this transgender individual had demanded access to the women’s locker room and been denied. Does anyone know how “denial” will be construed legally? If this individual had been asked to wait until all the other ladies finished and then allowed to use the locker room, would that still constitute a denial? Because of the vague nature of the ordinance, its practical application will play out in the court system. An unintended consequence of this ordinance is the undue pressure and angst that will arise for com-

passionate and caring people using their time and resources to help others.

Mark Blackwell of Justice Ministries, whom I wrote about in a previous column, testified at the council meeting that this ordinance places a strain on his organization, which offers rescue and shelter to victims of human trafficking. He stated before the council that his ministry works with LGBTQ individuals, but that the rigidity of the ordinance regarding access for anatomically opposite sex transgender persons will burden his organization financially, and more importantly, like the above example, removes his ability to assess a situation in regard to all involved, including women who have been traumatized and victimized by sexual crimes. The judgment of compassionate people has been removed from the equation by a city council so eager to please the lobbyists and activists who elected them that they have thrown common sense out the window.

Lastly, and most tragically, was the testimony at the council meeting by a psychologist who confidently asserted that if discrimination were just removed, the 44-percent suicide rate among transgender persons would surely decrease. (The rate for the U. S. as a whole is around 12 percent). I have to wonder, is it possible that these individuals are engaged in a larger mental struggle relating to identity and rejection of self? Will the next step of “help” the law provides include strict regulation on types of counseling and therapy for persons struggling with questions of sexual and gender identity? Or farther down the road, when will it become illegal for me to read from

Romans 1 in my pulpit?

I, for one, am thankful that we the people have our North Carolina legislature as a final line of defense against the overreach of the city of Charlotte and activist judges.

The Union County League of Women Voters invites the community to become informed citizens and learn the responsibilities and function of the local government in an interact series.

Each class is about two-and-a-half hours long and includes field trips to board meetings. The first meeting will discuss county government and the election process. Metrolina Christian wrestling crowns two at states

Sun Valley boys’ basketball eliminates Marvin Ridge

This is the best season in the history of Metrolina Christian’s wrestling program. The Warriors have only been battling on the mats for five years, but have evolved into one of North Carolina’s top programs with a third-place finish at the NCISAA state championship.

Metrolina Christian had 10 wrestlers participate in the state championship, with five competing in the final round – the most in school history.

Junior Daniel Hattaway beat Cary Academy’s Julian Sodano with a fall to win the 145-pound state championship, while junior Donnie Coleman defeated Charlotte Latin’s Ryan Ensor in a 10-7 decision to take home the 160-pound crown.

Freshman Jacob Hattaway (120 pounds), junior Coleman Johnson (132 pounds) and senior Daymond Turner (182 pounds) finished runnerup in their respective weight classes.

Samuel Switzerlett, an eighth grade, 113pounder, placed fourth, while his classmate Gabriel Perez (106 pounds) took fifth.

The Warriors overcame several obstacles, including an onslaught of injuries. Daniel Hattaway missed 10 matches due to a shoulder injury.

Coleman wasn’t expected to wrestle this season after sustaining a pelvic injury in football, and a concussion forced Turner to sit out for seven matches.

Coach Brad Aceta, who is in his fourth year

at the helm, was named NCISAA Coach of the Year.

“From the beginning with these kids it was, ‘What’s a wrestling match?’ so I literally had to teach them every single thing step-by-step,” Aceta said. “It was a challenge, but I think the overall point of it all, which is great, is really getting them to work together and really want to help each other become better.

The Warriors will be taking Daniel Hattaway, Coleman and Turner to nationals in Lehigh, Pa. “Last time we went there we brought home an all-American, so we’re hoping maybe something like that can happen again for these boys,” Aceta said.

Fortunately for Metrolina Christian, nearly its entire team, including most of its core nucleus will return next season.

Aceta has created and cultivated a strong family-like atmosphere that is built on sacrifice and servitude. It starts with the older players pouring into the younger players, which has made for a strong foundation that has yielded much success in a short period of time and is something to build on moving forward.

Spartans never give up and never surrender.

That mantra rang true when Sun Valley’s boys basketball team (16-11, 5-5 Southern Carolinas), the No. 22 seed, overcame two regular season losses to Marvin Ridge (16-11, 6-4 Southern Carolinas) by beating the No. 11seeded Mavericks, 54-50, in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs Feb. 23.

“It was huge for us,” Sun Valley coach Keith Mason said. “When the brackets came out you kind of get a sour taste in your mouth when you see that you’re going to be playing a conference opponent, but it is what it is. When I told the guys they were excited. They wanted to get revenge on them, so they were chomping at the bit.

“That led us coming out of the gates pretty quick, and we jumped on them.”

The Spartans jumped out to an early 13-2 advantage, and led by eight at the end of the first quarter. Marvin Ridge trimmed Sun Valley’s lead to two in the fourth quarter, but it was an uphill battle for the Mavs the entire game.

Mason said his team played with great energy in its win over Marvin Ridge, which carried it through to the end.

Sun Valley advances to the second round for a road trip to Kings Mountain, where it will face the No. 6-seeded Mountaineers (19-8, 13-3 South Mountain) Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. The winner will face the winner of No. 14 seed Cox Mill and No. 30 seed Northwest Cabarrus.

Mason said he’s been blessed with unselfish players. They were unselfish almost to a fault early in the season, but the Spartans are playing their best basketball of late and doing it at the most critical juncture.

“They’re being more selfish, and that’s to help us,” Mason said. “That’s not a bad thing for us right now. I feel like the guys aren’t waiting around for each other. They’re kind of taking the lead, and they follow right behind them.”

Sun Valley is playing with an underdog mentality. They aren’t satisfied, and feel like they have much to prove.

Kings Mountain has a significant size advantage, so it’s imperative for Sun Valley to be smart with how it attacks the lane and makes sure to finish when it does so. Getting to the free-throw line, boxing out, and getting rebounds will all be key factors that can make or break the Spartans’ chance for an upset.

Arguably, the most important priority, aside from ball security for Sun Valley, is controlling the tempo. The Spartans like to play at a high clip, and want to run and get out on the fast-break. Sun Valley will be in trouble if the Mountaineers slow things down to a more deliberate pace, make it a half-court game and pound the ball inside.

Sun Valley is getting good production from junior forward Anthony Brown, senior guard Elijah Evans, junior point guard Hughston Finklea and junior guard Jeremiah Miller, and will need them to set the tone early with a strong start at Kings Mountain.

Mason said Brown is an X-factor, and that the Spartans play well when he plays well.
