H. Allen Tate, Jr., founder and chairman of the Allen Tate Company, died at his home in Charlotte on June 22 at 84
years old. The loss is a great one for Charlotte, as Tate’s fingerprints are across the entire state in the form of his two passions – real estate and economic development.
Tate was born on April 23, 1931, and raised in Gaffney, South Carolina. The real estate mogul graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and moved to Charlotte upon graduation to start his real estate business. Tate opened the Allen Tate Company’s first location in 1957 at 112 S. Tryon St. as
a “one-stop shop� for homeowners and potential homeowners. Since, Tate has grown the company to become the No. 1 real estate and homeownership company in the Carolinas and No. 7 in the nation among non-franchised, independent real estate companies.
