Allen Tate dies, legacy lives on Real estate company founder, transportation advocate dies at 84

H. Allen Tate, Jr., founder and chairman of the Allen Tate Company, died at his home in Charlotte on June 22 at 84

years old.

The loss is a great one for Charlotte, as Tate’s fingerprints are across the entire state in the form of his two passions – real estate and economic development.

Tate was born on April 23, 1931, and raised in Gaffney, South Carolina. The real estate mogul graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and moved to Charlotte upon graduation to start his real estate business. Tate opened the Allen Tate Company’s first location in 1957 at 112 S. Tryon St. as

a “one-stop shop� for homeowners and potential homeowners.

Since, Tate has grown the company to become the No. 1 real estate and homeownership company in the Carolinas and No. 7 in the nation among non-franchised, independent real estate companies. Allen Tate Company currently has (see Allen Tate on page 3)

While his burgundy and gold signs can be spotted in lawns across the area, Tate’s sphere of influence extends well beyond the realms of the real estate market; Tate, who previously served on the Charlotte Chamber’s Regional Roads Committee, helped lead the effort for the completion of Interstate 485 and the widening of Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County.

The final segment of I-485’s outerbelt was named in Tate’s honor in March as a testament to his efforts in infrastructure improvement.

Tate’s accomplishments are many – he was named Carolinas Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year (2007); Distinguished Scouting Citizen (2008); Order of the Long Leaf Pine (2008); N.C. Business Hall of Fame (2010); N.C. Housing Hall of Fame (2010); and Paul Harris Rotary Fellow (2012) – but his biggest accomplishment is summed up by Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) President Dr. Tony Zeiss: “he had a wonderful heart.”

Zeiss met Tate 23 years ago when he came to Charlotte to begin his role as CPCC president and Tate served on the college foundation board.

“You can’t be in Charlotte very long

without knowing Allen Tate,” Zeiss said. “He’s been a longtime supporter of education in general and Central Piedmont in particular. We became friends way H. Allen Tate, Jr. back then and shared a lot of similarities, especially with our interest in history.”

On May 28, Tate joined Zeiss on the campus to celebrate the installment of the Allen Tate Tower – a gift to the college from Tate. The tower stands 48 feet tall with a 144-square-foot-base and is constructed of cast stone and brick with a four-sided clock face at the top of the tower.

The tower also has the ability to play peals, tolls and songs through its digital carillon.

Zeiss said the gift echoes Tate’s generous spirit.

“Allen said to me, ‘Tony, I want to do something really nice for that Central campus,’” Zeiss recalled. “He said, ‘I went to Chapel Hill and we have the Old Well.

People know it. We don’t have anything like that at Central Piedmont. Think of something and I want to do it.’”

Zeiss said Tate gave “one of the best” dedication speeches he’s ever heard upon the tower’s dedication as he encouraged students and faculty to “keep dreaming.”

Ned Curran, president and CEO of Bissell and the North Carolina Board of Transportation Chair, said he would remember Tate for taking on big challenges and being a compassionate leader in the Charlotte community.

“Allen didn't shy away from big obstacles,” he said. “If it was growing his company into the largest residential real estate firm in the Carolinas, he was going to do it. If it was figuring out how to build a 66-mile outerbelt, he was going to work the legislators, the bureaucrats, the business community and the citizens to get it done.”

The H. Allen Tate Jr. Highway runs from Old Statesville Road to I-85 and stretches nearly six miles.

It opened after much anticipation on June 5.

“Allen knew that growing communities needed to have the right infrastructure,” Curran said. “Schools, social services, transportation – all are parts of what it takes to have a city where people want to live and work. For decades, Allen as been at the forefront of the kind of thinking and effort necessary to make it a reality.”

Zeiss said Tate often would take friends and employees under his wing and serve as a mentor, helping impart his business

knowledge and entrepreneurial wisdom.

His compassion for others and leadership skills will continue through those who knew him and worked alongside him, he said.

Tate’s legacy will undoubtedly continue as residents pass Allen Tate “For Sale” signs across Charlotte neighborhoods or drive down his highway on their daily commute. But, both Zeiss and Curran said Tate’s legacy extends well beyond those boundaries.

“Allen will certainly leave a mark in Charlotte by the buildings and roads that bear his name,” Curran said. “But what may not be so obvious, but is nonetheless vitally important, is that his legacy will also be imparted in the literally thousands of people that he touched through his employees, his customers and the civic engagements he was involved in for decades – those people will be fully engaged because of the inspiration they found in him.”

“The people who know him know that his fingerprints are on practically every road and neighborhood in Charlotte,” Zeiss said. “He’s the one who had the vision for the loop. People will remember him for that. Others will remember him as an entrepreneur in residential real estate. But those who really worked with Allen and knew him will remember him for his big heart. He had a wonderful heart. He loved people.”

Charlotte Symphony patriotic Summer Pops concert and fireworks CHARLOTTE – Charlotte Symphony will perform its annual patriotic concert, “Celebrate America!,” on Friday, July 3, at Symphony Park in south Charlotte.

The concert will begin with a prelude

by Chuck Johnson and the Charleyhorse Band at 7 p.m.

Charlotte Symphony will perform a “star-spangled celebration of American independence” including patriotic favorites – “America the Beautiful,” “God Bless America” and more – as well as a “Back to the Fifties” medley and some of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits.

Annual SkyShow in uptown Charlotte CHARLOTTE – The annual SkyShow Charlotte fireworks show will take place Saturday, July 4, at BB&T Ballpark in uptown Charlotte.

The SkyShow Street Party will take place from 2 to 10 p.m. along Mint Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, in front of the ballpark, and will include face painting, balloon animals, games, prizes, crafts and an interactive kids’ area.

A Mobile Kitchen will feature cooking demonstrations, and vendors will offer hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream, cold sodas and more. The celebration also will include a patriotic flag ceremony honoring veterans and active military personnel.

The event will conclude with SkyShow Fireworks – the largest fireworks display in the Southeast. Fireworks begin after the 7:05 p.m. baseball game at BB&T Ballpark ends.

Celebrate America Fireworks Show at Carowinds CHARLOTTE – Carowinds will host its Celebrate America Fireworks Show on Friday, July 4, beginning at 10 p.m. Admission costs $25 to $50.

Parade, concert and more in downtown Matthews MATTHEWS – Area residents are invited to downtown Matthews for a variety of activities on Saturday, July 4, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The afternoon will kick off with a People’s Parade, commencing at town hall. People are invited to visit the town green, next to town hall, at 5 p.m. to decorate bicycles, wagons and more for the parade, which will start at 5:30 p.m.

“This is the time to get creative with garland, streamers, flags, balloons and other items that will be provided to make your mode of transportation stand out,” the town said in a news release.

The parade route will begin on Matthews Station Street, turn left on Trade Street and end at Stumptown Park, where other activities will be held. Activities in the park start at 5 p.m. and will include face painting, carnival games, a bounce house, “kid-friendly” activities and balloon gifts from Curley the Clown.

Food and dessert trucks also will be on site throughout the evening.

Queen City Brass Band’s annual patriotic concert MINT HILL – The Queen City Brass Band will take the stage in downtown Mint Hill for the town’s annual patriotic concert on Friday, July 3, at 7 p.m.

The concert will conclude the town’s annual June Tunes concert series, and will feature various patriotic favorites and more.

‘Saluting the Red, White, and Blue’ exhibit at Matthews Heritage Museum MATTHEWS – The Matthews Heritage Museum will celebrate July Fourth with a patriotic display, “Saluting the Red, White, and Blue.”

The small display features a variety of vintage patriotic memorabilia, including 100year-old postcards, an Uncle Sam figure, a cigar “flag,” antique paperweight and a Teddy Roosevelt plate, according to a news release.

The museum is partnering with Blue Star Museums – a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the U.S. Department of Defense and more than 2,000 museums across the

MetLife donates to Easter Seals

MetLife presented a $30,000 donation to Easter Seals on June 18 in honor of Disability Insurance Awareness Month, which takes place in May. MetLife team members Gene Lunman, Kieran Mullins, Brian Bruneau and Sutton White, as well as the Disability Insurance Marketing team,

presented the check to Jennifer Crumpler, vice president for Development of Easter Seals, and Michael Schultze, foundation chair of Easter Seals.

MetLife selected Easter Seals as the recipient of the donation because of the organization’s dedication to helping children and adults with disabilities attain independence.

Easter Seals provides education, outreach, exceptional services and advocacy to people living with autism and other disabilities.

Kelvin Benjamin to host inaugural youth football camp

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin will host an inaugural youth football camp at Rocky River High School.

The two-day camp, sponsored by Northwestern Mutual, will be held on July 24 and 25, a Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Attendees will learn fundamental football skills and interact with Benjamin. Each camper will receive an autograph from Benjamin and a team photo.

Camp is open to boys and girls in first through eighth grades. The cost is $99.

Firebirds raises $100,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill exceeded its goal of raising $75,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, and donated $100,000 to the cause. Ballantyne Corporate Park donated $306 toward the cause.

The annual fundraiser encourages communities and businesses to host lemonade stands and raise funds for childhood cancer research.

Firebirds locations in StoneCrest at Piper Glen and SouthPark participated in the event. “Through the help of supporters like Firebirds, our foundation has funded more than 475 research projects at leading hospitals and institutions across North America.

With each donation made, we are moving closer to achieving my daughter Alex’s dream, a cure for all kids with cancer,� said Liz Scott, ALSF’s co-executive director and Alex’s mother, in a news release.

This year marks the 11th year since Alex Scott issued a challenge to raise $1 million toward childhood cancer research – one cup of lemonade at a time. Approximately $320,000 has been donated to date.

SouthPark mall to undergo renovations

SouthPark mall will undergo major interior and exterior renovations beginning this month.

Plans for the mall’s updates include updated luxury seating areas, enhanced Wi-Fi access and connectivity, new flooring, signing and seating in the food court, as well as painting, landscaping, lighting and general improvements.

SouthPark mall, operated by Simon Property Group, hasn't been renovated since 2004.

Renovations are slated to be completed by the holiday shopping season.

CPCC to offer cosmetology program

CBCC seeking blood donors

Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) is seeking volunteers to help prevent the regional blood supply drop during the summer. To encourage residents to donate blood, donors who give blood at one of CBCC’s five donation centers between July 1 and 8 will receive a $5 Starbucks gift card.

Student donors 16 years old and older with a valid ID will receive a free movie ticket voucher between July 9 and 31.

“Every summer, as regular donors leave for vacation and students break from school, blood supplies in our region drop.

Vacations are great, but the need for blood doesn’t take one,” said Martin Grable, president and CEO of Community Blood Center of the Carolinas in a news release.

“While we know it is a busy time of year, we appreciate the community giving blood to help meet the ongoing needs of local patients.”

Donors must weigh at least 120 pounds.

Legacy 521 apartments near Ballantyne completed the first phase of apartment suites last week, located at 15708 Greythorne Drive.

Legacy 521 is the latest of GCI’s Residential Legacy brand portfolio and features one-, two- and three-bedroom suites. Rent ranges from $1,050 to $1,775.

Carolina Place announces new retailer, restaurant

Carolina Place Mall will open two new national stores this summer with the addition of rue21 and Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Chipotle will be located in the food court between McAlister’s Deli and Chick-fil-A and will open “later this summer,” according to a news release.

Central Piedmont Community College will offer a two-semester program to enable cosmetologists to become licensed in cosmetology beauty education beginning in August.

The Cosmetology Instructor Certificate will begin in the fall academic year and will teach area professionals, as well as current CPCC students, how to work with chemical companies and salon product lines specific to licensed professionals, according to a news release.

“Our new certificate program will include both practical and theoretical applications to the beauty industry,” said Catherine Cunningham, senior program coordinator for the CPCC cosmetology program, in the release. “Not only will our students receive a solid foundation in cosmetology teaching methods, but they will also receive licensing prep training for the licensing exam that is administered by the North Carolina Cosmetic Arts Board.”

Smoky Bissell joined more than 50 members of the Ballantyne Corporate Park, YMCA of Greater Charlotte and south Charlotte community on June 23 to break ground in a celebration of the future Sara’s YMCA – the latest YMCA, which is named in honor of Bissell’s late wife, Sara Harris Bissell, who died in 2009.

The facility will replace the Ballantyne Village YMCA, currently located at 14825 Ballantyne Village Way. YMCA of Greater Charlotte President and CEO Andy Calhoun, Morrison Family YMCA Board Chair Doug Baumgartner, and Morrison Family YMCA Community Vice President Steve Bowers, among others, joined Bissell and his wife, Margaret Bissell, in the celebration.

The newest YMCA facility will be nearly twice the size of Ballantyne Village YMCA at 24,000 square feet. It will feature spaces for yoga and hot yoga, group fitness classes, TRX workouts, personal training and more, and will be open to patrons 16 years old and older.

Both Bowers and Calhoun said Sara’s YMCA would “in no way� compete with the nearby Morrison Family YMCA, which recently surpassed 20,000 members.

Baumgartner said the 535-acre Ballantyne Corporate Park and the 67,000-square-foot Morrison Family YMCA would work in conjunction to bring another feature to the Ballantyne area, supporting Bissell’s Ballantyne mantra of “Live, work, play, stay.� “These two building blocks have come together to create yet another wonderful amenity for this area in what will be Sara’s Y,�

Baumgartner said.

The total cost of the project is estimated around $5 million. An initial $2.5 million donation was made on behalf of Smoky and Margaret Bissell; YMCA will contribute the remaining $2.5 million. “The YMCA has meant a great deal to our family,â€? Smoky Bissell said. “Sara’s father, if he were here, in a minute would tell you that the YMCA raised him‌ he was a member of the Athens YMCA and his life was spent at the Athens Y.â€?

Sara’s Y will be located at the corner of Ballantyne Corporate Place and Brixham Hill Drive, across from the bull statues. The location will serve the estimate 15,000 employees of the Corporate Park, as well as surrounding residents.

The group held a clothing drive, which generated an “incredible” response; the group Audrey Huynh of about 15 high schoolers collected thousands of clothing items and then held a sale of the designer clothes at reasonable prices at the Cornwell Center. The event raised $3,000.

All the nonprofit’s funds went toward women’s rights advocacy programs, locally and around the world.

Huynh said the club began to grow as it held more sales and awareness events about women-centered topics, such as sex trafficking in Charlotte, as well as luncheons and galas to raise money.

The nonprofit held a spring gala this year focusing on the importance of educating young girls and, in turn, empowering them, Huynh said.

The gala raised approximately $10,000 to provide low-income or undocumented students scholarships to attend Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), as well as the Afghan Institute of Learning and Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program in Vietnam.

Supporting undocumented immigrant students was particularly important to Huynh, as they must pay out-of-state

tuition at CPCC and receive no federal funding to attend college. The associate degree program costs $8,000 overall for in-state students and $16,000 overall for out-of-state students.

“Most of these girls don’t have enough money to start off with (to start the program),” Huynh said.

The funds from the gala helped fund two $2,000 scholarships and four $1,000 scholarships.

Huynh also established the MUSTANG Project earlier this year, which consisted of building an aquaponic garden and outdoor box gardens to help alleviate area food deserts in the Charlotte area.

There are about 60 food deserts in Mecklenburg County, according to Meg Fencil, education and outreach program director of Sustain Charlotte, a nonprofit that seeks to advance a region-wide sustainability movement.

Huynh raised approximately $20,000 in about two and half months through corporate and community sponsorships to carry out the project.

“It was interesting with that project because I was asking people to invest in something that we didn’t have yet,” she said.

Nonprofit 100 Gardens built the aquaponic garden – a garden that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system, where the fish waste provides an organic food source for plants and the plants provide a natural filter for the fish to live. The group also taught students how to build and maintain the garden.

The crops produced in the gardens went to Communities In Schools and Friendship Trays, a sect of Meals-On-Wheels,

which delivers meals to elderly, handicapped and convalescing residents.

“It had always been a childhood dream of mine to have a garden, so I was achieving a childhood dream while still helping people,” she said.

Huynh also said she appreciated how the project helped bring the school community together and connect students who might not have met otherwise.

She feels confident both the MUSTANG Project and Clothes for Change will continue after she leaves Charlotte to pursue a degree in international relations at Stanford University in the fall, and hopes to eventually start another Clothes for Change chapter in college.

Huynh said helping others through nonprofits had been a “transformative experience,” and helped her realize she could make a change in her community, despite her age or others’ doubts.

“I feel teenagers convince themselves that because we’re young, we can’t make change,” she said. “I’ve found people really rally around a young person trying to create change.”

She believes fellow young people feel inspired to create change where their passions lie.

“One thing that was important for me initially was to go outside my comfort zone,” Huynh said. “It seems simple, but I feel that most people don’t do it.”

Huynh encourages young people to believe in themselves and to invest in their passions.

“People will run and support you if you are capable in believing in yourself,” she said. “Investing in my passions, that’s what defined my high school career.”

Myers Park graduate seeks to change the world

Audrey Huynh set out on a mission her freshman year at Myers Park High School: to create change.

Now a recent graduate, Audrey realizes making a positive change – and encouraging others to do the same – wasn’t as hard as she expected.

Huynh has been instrumental in starting and sustaining two nonprofits during her high school career – Clothes for Change and the MUSTANG Project.

During her freshman year, Huynh noticed a classmate who wore designer clothing each day.

“After (attending) Randolph Middle and Waddell, I wasn’t used to the degree of affluence at Myers Park,” she said.

Huynh saw this as an opportunity to use what she considered an “incredible resource” as a way to empower women.

Huynh said she always wanted to start a charity-community organization, but didn’t want to ask people for money because she felt that wasn’t sustainable long term.

During the summer before her sophomore year, after reading Nicholas Kristof’s “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” Huynh knew she wanted to support women’s rights locally, nationally and internationally.

She became one of the founding members of Clothes for Change, a business model charity that collects designer

Education Students to gather around the table all summer

Area students can ensure they’ll have breakfast and lunch each day this summer, thanks to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) summer program.

CMS Child Nutrition Services will offer its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) from June 16 through Aug. 7 at 52 CMS school sites. Some sites run Monday through Friday, while others run Monday through Thursday each week.

The program offers two free meals for Mecklenburg County children who are 1 to 18 years old. The meals meet nutrition standards based on federal guidelines.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides funding to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to administer the Summer Food Service Program. NCDPI recruits local governments, school food authorities and nonprofit organizations to sponsor the programs in their communities. Those sponsors are reimbursed for the cost of the meals served.

More than 826,000 children in North Carolina were eligible to receive the meals in 2014, but only 17 out of every 100 of those children were served nutritious meals during the summer, according to NCDPI. For every 100 school lunch programs, there are only 87 breakfast sites and 36 summer food program sites in the country, the USDA reported.

NCDPI is working to publicize the programs so more organizations can become program sponsors and more students can be fed.

More than 1 in 5 children are at risk of hunger, and among African-Americans and Latino, nearly 1 in 3 children is at risk of hunger, according to the USDA. In North Carolina, 17.3 percent of residents are at risk of hunger.

“Children who miss school breakfast and lunch are more likely to be sick, absent or tardy, disruptive in class, and inattentive.

They also score lower on achievement tests.

Civil rights and musical nights Violinist reflects on history while preparing for annual Charlotte Symphony patriotic concert.

In her 28 years of playing with the Charlotte Symphony, violinist Susan Blumberg has been through a lot.

Before being offered the job, Blumberg endured the heartbreak of 14 unsuccessful auditions else- Susan Blumberg where and considered giving up. When she started with the Charlotte Symphony, the oldest musicians were the age she is now. She remembers the good and tough times.

“The Charlotte Symphony has been with me through many life stages,” said Blumberg, a Matthews resident. “My first Summer Pops was 1988, and I’ve played every one since.”

This year’s Summer Pops will culminate with “Hot Spanish Nights” on Sunday, June 28, and “Celebrate America!” on July 3, a Friday, in Symphony Park. Gates open at 5 p.m., followed by the prelude at 7 p.m. and the Charlotte Symphony’s performance at 8:15 p.m.

Blumberg’s journey with the violin was impacted by her father’s work as a civil rights advocate. A broadcast journalist from St. Louis, Missouri, Ralph Blumberg bought WBOX – a radio station in Bogalusa, Louisiana, north of New Orleans. In 1965, he organized a show with community leaders to discuss the Civil Rights Act. Ralph Blumberg canceled the show due to threats from the Ku Klux Klan, but still made an editorial stand in broadcasting his pro-civil rights stance.

When a moderate Klan leader warned Ralph Blumberg of a plot to kill his family, Blumberg sent his wife and two children – Susan and her brother – away to safety.

“He could have turned his head and life would have been much easier for us, but he did the right thing,” Blumberg said of her father.

Ralph Blumberg won the Paul White Award in 1965 for lifetime achievement in electronic journalism. Other winners include Edward R. Murrow, Tim Russert and John F. Kennedy.

Ralph Blumberg eventually lost the station and all he invested in it. When the family relocated to New York, they had no extra money for the music lessons Susan Blumberg begged her parents for.

children,” she said.

Her chance finally came in fourth grade.

The school desperately needed a violinist for their string program. When she realized the violin was included with the position, she volunteered and was a natural.

The Blumbergs eventually moved to Maryland so Ralph Blumberg could take a job in Washington, D.C. Susan Blumberg had not considered playing professionally, but her violin teacher encouraged her to prepare.

She received special permission to leave high school classes early so she could practice.

She attended the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and received a postgraduate Liberace Scholarship in 1981-82.

In 1983, she traveled to Mexico and landed a position with the Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM (OFUNAM), the oldest symphonic group in Mexico City. Though they played standard orchestral repertoire, Blumberg was immersed in a completely different culture, with rehearsals in Spanish and tours around Mexico.

“Music truly is a universal language,” said Blumberg, who remembers mariachi bands and dancing in the streets. “There is a warmth and depth to the people there, and it is reflected in their music.”

As part of Summer Pops, the Charlotte Symphony will take audience members on a similar musical adventure with its June 28 performance, “Hot Spanish Nights,” which features Spanish and Spanish-influenced music. “(It) will be so much fun,” Blumberg said.

“This music contains primal rhythms, which is why it’s appealing to so many.”

The July 3 Summer Pops concert will feature “Celebrate America!” – a patriotic concert. The music will include some unconventional picks, such as the “King of Pop Medley” – Victor A. Vanacore’s arrangement of Michael Jackson songs – in addition to “God Bless America,” “America the Beautiful” and “Liberty Bell” by John Philip Sousa. “‘Salute (to the Armed Forces)’ honors all of our service people in every branch of the military,” said Blumberg. “We have them stand when their theme is played.”

On July Fourth, when many Americans remember the moment the U.S. Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, Blumberg’s thoughts will inevitably turn to her father and what her family sacrificed so Americans could be free to pursue their dreams.

“I am really proud of them,” she said.

Charlotte Country Day’s Kavir Kumar was masterful in his junior season with the Bucs this spring, and was head and shoulders above the competition. Kumar was named a back-to-back all-conference and all-state after finishing with a 19-1 singles record.

The five-star recruit finished as the individual’s state runner up.

Covenant Day’s Allan Lock fared well as the Lions No. 1 player in the face of stiff competition.

Lock finished in his junior campaign with an 11-4 record in singles matches, and went 7-6 in doubles matches on his way to earn all-conference and NCISAA 3A all-state honors.

Providence Day’s Alex Brea had a stellar season with the Chargers. Brea finished 15-4 in singles matches and 12-6 in doubles matches, and was named to the all-conference team and all-state team. The talented Brea will continue his career at Appalachian State.

Kavir Kumar’s junior season as a varsity tennis player didn’t end the way he hoped.

He struggled to stay healthy, as he endured a shoulder injury and a sprained ankle that forced him to miss significant amounts of practice time. Those setbacks kept him from being in the best shape he needed to be in to compete at the highest level and win a state championship.

But despite an onslaught of obstacles, Kumar still found himself on the court at the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state championship, where he faced Cary Academy’s Alex Yang.

The Bucs No. 1 player sustained a heat stroke, but managed to finish the match.

Unfortunately, he lost 6-4, 6-2 and was forced to go to the hospital, where he spent five hours receiving fluids.

He said it was one of the hardest moments of the season.

“The team ended up going back,” Kumar said. “I felt separated. I thought we had a chance to get it, and I was really disappointed I let my team down in the last match.”

Charlotte Country Day coach Calvin Davis said Kumar had moments of blindness and unsteadiness and went to the hospital at the recommendation of doctors, but his integrity kept him in the match until the end.

“He didn’t want it to be that he left the match or didn’t finish because he quit,” Davis said. “I think it takes a lot of honor to give a person who’s winning the right to win the match if you can. I’m not saying you should play and put yourself in bad health. I’m just trying to give a good example of the integrity this young man has.

“I think as a person he has great integrity. You can see that as he was a wonderful leader on the team, so not only did he play at the No. 1 position, but he was throughout the year helping all of the younger kids understand what it meant to play on a championship team.”

Individually, Kumar knows the makeup of a champion, and Country Day as a program is well aware of what it takes to be a championship team. However, Cary Academy has had the Buccaneers the last two seasons.

At the same time, that doesn't take away Kumar’s success; he finished with a 19-1

record, was named team MVP, and earned all-conference and all-state honors.

Now, Kumar is the South Charlotte Weekly Boys’ Tennis Player of the Year.

“Kavir’s a very hard worker,” Davis said.

“He’s dedicated to what he’s doing. He puts in the time. Kavir, he’s continuing to reach far beyond where he is today. He wants to get better and better. I would think that in the back of his mind there could be aspirations of being a tour player one day, but right now obviously college is the most important thing to him.

“He played hurt at least half of the season, and yet he still managed to go out and basically be undefeated.

He did have one loss in the state championship finals.

I’m not making an excuse for him, but I really think that loss was basically due to a heat stroke. He later ended up … with five quarts of fluid to recover.”

Kumar said the highlight of the season came when the Bucs beat Durham Academy, 5-3, in the semifinals of the state playoffs. Country Day lost all three doubles matches, but rebounded to win all five singles matches and defeat the Cavaliers.

“I really want our team to do as well as we can,” Kumar said. “I know every year we play we have a chance to get the state title, so I feel like a lot of how the team does is how well I help them; not only lead, but also listen to them and see what they have to bring.”

His “team before self” attitude manifests with the way he invests in his teammates.

Davis said he hits with everybody on the team regardless of what level they play on.

“If you are around Kavir you’re going to want to be around Kavir,” Davis said.

“He’s one of those people.”

Q&A with Providence Day football coach Adam Hastings

Adam Hastings accepted the offer to become Providence Day’s next head coach on March 10, after a successful tenure with Adrey Kell (36-25 record and four state playoff appearances in five seasons).

The 33-year-old Hastings takes over a program in need of fresh energy after going 9-15 (1-7 CISAA) the last two seasons.

Hastings spoke with South Charlotte Weekly about his transition, what folks can expect from the Chargers this season and more.

How much time have you gotten to spend at PD getting to know the kids?

I’ve been able to spend a good amount of time over here, luckily. I was able to get here in the afternoons, and I’ve been here the last couple of weeks pretty much all day. It’s good to kind of transition any time you’re in any place for a long period of time, it’s kind of bitter sweet to leave, but this place has been awesome.

The kids have been great. It’s been awesome to be around them. They work their tails off. They do everything you ask them to do and more. They’re just hungry.

It’s been a real pleasure to be over here.

Has there been anybody that’s surprised you so far?

What’s your coaching philosophy?

To say one person is kind of difficult. I’ve been really impressed with the senior leadership. I’ve seen what I believe is great leadership from guys. Scott Peterson, he went to our basketball team camp, and did the workouts in the morning, grabbed his stuff, got on the bus and went to Wofford.

He had every reason not to come to workouts in the morning, because he had team camp, but found a way to do that.

We had three guys who were in China two weeks, three weeks. They came back last Wednesday night, and were at workouts last Thursday morning. We did the 7-on-7 last Thursday night. They were at the 7-on-7, so to see guys like Solomon Key, Cameron Goldean and Greg Truong do that I think that’s great leadership on their part. You don’t see that a lot at different places.

My philosophy of coaching is simple.

I think as a head coach, it’s about providing leadership and serving. I think that you have to be willing to serve your players, your coaches, the school. I think you lead in doing that.

For me I try to be very organized. I try to communicate very well. I want our program to be one players love, that they respect, but they’re invested in, and I think that’s one thing we try to do. We try to make their investment heavy, so they know the importance of it and they can learn life lessons along the way in that process.

What kind of base offense and defense should we expect to see?

…The one thing I try to do is we try to have an identity of a team that we want to have, and how we’re going to do that and what we’re going to do will look different for year to year just because the type of players you have. When I was at Ardrey Kell we looked different offensively

every year. We looked different defensively every year, but our identity always tried to stay the same. I think that will be something consistent here.

To say where we’re at offensively and defensively, I think that my biggest thing defensively is I want to play really fast, and I want to force turnovers.

Those are two things to me that are very important.

On offense and defense we’re not going to do a lot of different stuff, but we want to be really good at what we do.

On offense we want to control the ball.

We want to spread the ball out, but we definitely want to be able to convert and control the tempo of the game.

Did you bring anybody from Ardrey Kell with you?

I brought Otis Moore and Brad Wornick. Otis was with me for six years.

He coached linebackers. He coached D-line, was co-coordinator over there defensive-wise, and did a great job. He does a great job with D-linemen.

Brad will coach quarterbacks. He actually played quarterback for me at Ardrey Kell the very first year after I left East Burke. He went on and played at East Carolina, graduated, and coached last year at Ardrey Kell with me.
