Waverly’s groundbreaking was bittersweet for Frank Matthews. The property under development at Providence and Ardrey Kell roads was once known as Matthews Family Farm – a present from the parents of Sarah Houston to William Matthews for marrying their daughter in 1860.

While excited about the project’s potential for the region, Matthews was sad about his friend, prominent Charlotte developer John Crosland Jr., being laid to rest few hours after the groundbreaking on Aug. 5, just 10 miles down Providence Road. Matthews and Crosland often talked about what to do with the land. Crosland advised Matthews on more than one occasion to hold onto it.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Ann Clark, Central Piedmont Community College President Tony Zeiss and University of North Carolina at Charlotte Chancellor Philip Dubois will come together on Aug. 15, a Saturday, to discuss the state of education in Mecklenburg County at the Ballantyne Breakfast Club. This month’s meeting will focus on education, for kindergarten through 12th graders, college students and adults. Clark, Zeiss and Dubois will begin the meeting with 15-minute presentations each. Clark will focus on the start of the CMS school year, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) schools and an increasing graduation rate, which is now more than 85 percent for the system. Zeiss will cover topics including continuing the partnership CPCC has with CMS, the advancement of
