Business Briefs Founding executive director returns to Classroom Central Karen Calder returned this week to lead Classroom Central as its executive director.

Calder served as founding director of the organization from 2002 to 2009.

The nonprofit provides supplies to students living in poverty, according Karen Calder to a news release.

She officially returned to Classroom Central on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

“We are so fortunate to have Karen return to Classroom Central,” Jenna Kelly, chair of Classroom Central’s board, said in a news release. “She is a well-respected community leader committed to our mission and we know Classroom Central will thrive under her leadership.”

She served as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte, beginning in 2011, and also held leadership positions with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas and Charlotte Housing Authority since leaving Classroom Central in 2009.

Calder is credited with growing revenue of Big Brothers Big Sisters by 36 percent dur-

ing her tenure with the organization, through corporate partnerships, foundation gifts, special events, government funding and individual giving, the release said. The organization achieved Gold Standard Status with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America under Calder’s leadership in 2013, for growth in the number of children served and increased annual revenue.

Calder will continue to be a “Big Sister” to an 8-year-old girl named Kaylee, but she’s also looking forward to returning to Classroom Central.

“My passion has always been the Charlotte community and children,” Calder, a Monroe native who originally studied to be a teacher, said in the release. “When I heard about this opportunity to return to Classroom Central, I felt a real calling to do so. In addition to a wide range of experiences, these past six years have provided me a broader perspective on challenges children in our community face which will make me a better leader for Classroom Central.”

Classroom Central collects and distributes free school supplies to students in need, supporting more than 100,000 students in 200 schools across six school districts. Kristy Detwiler has been Pineville’s Parks and Recreation Director for 25 years and is responsible for planning and organizing a dozen town events each year.

The department will host the annual Pineville Fall- Kristy Detwiler Fest this weekend, which will feature a variety of food and art and craft vendors, kids’ activities, rides, live entertainment and more. What led you to take the position as Pineville's Parks and Rec Director?

When I applied for the park director position, I was already an employee of the town. With a degree in recreation and years of planning and implementing events, I decided to apply for the open position, mainly because I had already established several activities, events and trips for the town while I held the position of town clerk.

Last year, the Park and Rec Department took on the responsibility of cultural and art programming, adding fine and performing arts to our current programming.

Tell us about FallFest. Anything new for 2015?

Every year, we try to bring a new family show; this year we are excited to bring Flippenout, a duo trampoline show. We are featuring some great small local craft vendors. Support “shop small” and “made in America,” and come out and start your Christmas shopping this weekend.

What's your favorite thing about FallFest?

FallFest is a great event that offers lots of free entertainment for families. We have something for everyone. The atmosphere is so lively.

What other events does Pineville Parks and Rec have in the works?

Expanding our art and cultural programs; look for some youth and adult sports coming early next year. We also offer self-defense, cheerleading, cardio funk, boot camp, yoga, senior exercise, summer camps, field trips and special events throughout the year. Our next event will be the Halloween Fright Night on Oct. 30, followed by the town’s tree lighting on Dec. 5.

Charlotte to host World Series of Youth Lax qualifier April 9 Charlotte has been selected as one of five hosts of the regional qualifier for the Warrior World Series of Youth Lacrosse 2016 on April 9 and 10, 2016, at Mecklenburg County Regional Sportsplex in Matthews. The regional champion will advance to the national championship in Denver, Colorado.

“It is only appropriate that we have partnered with the top facilities for our regional qualifiers” said World Series of Youth Lacrosse Founder, Jake Steinfeld, in a news release.

Inaugural Rescue Me 5K slated for Saturday, Oct. 17, in Charlotte The American Pit Bull Foundation’s (APBF) inaugural Rescue Me 5K will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17 at McAlpine Creek Park. The Rescue Me 5K – one of the only area races that encourages participants to run with their dogs – will support the APBF’s Operation Sidekick Program, which trains rescued pit bulls as service dogs to help veterans overcome Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The APBF is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting responsible breed ownership through education, as well as providing medical assistance for dogs. The organization also aids in responsible pit bull adoption.

Gun control, bad news PreMarket Sale and the role of the media

As a young reporter one night in small town Alabama, our newsroom erupted nearly as loud as the police scanner sitting by the photographer’s desk.

A non-descript man had one leg hanging off a bridge threatening to end his life, Jonathan McElvy and all available units were being summoned to the scene.

The newsroom was full of rookies, and because the location of the suicide attempt was not far from our office, we all decided we needed to go cover the potential carnage.

Thankfully, there was one prevailing voice of reason in that newsroom.

Our editor was a calm woman full of experience and wisdom, and in a delicate voice, she explained that we would not be publishing a man’s self-inflicted demise on the front page of our newspaper.

“You’re welcome to go, but we aren’t publishing it,” she said.

The rookies looked bewildered. We had breaking news not far away, and goodness knows we would sell some papers tomorrow if we had this tragic story on the front page.

We did not cover the suicide attempt for two reasons. Thankfully, police talked the man off the concrete ledge, for starters. Second, our editor explained that we would never cover a suicide because of what she – and many others – call the “copycat syndrome.”

I don’t remember the specific words, but our editor talked to us almost two decades ago about mental illness and how, if someone contemplating suicide saw another suicide on the front page, it might drive other people to do the same thing.

Media have a difficult, though great, responsibility to our readers. It’s not our job to hide news; it is our job to consider the ramifications of our reporting.

A lot has changed in the 18 years since that important lesson. As any consumer of news knows today, media don’t care a whole lot about responsibility anymore, mainly because media just isn’t what it used to be.

These days, anybody with a smart phone and Internet connection is something of a journalist. Whether through social media or personal blogs, you and everyone you know has the ability to spread news and information to the rest of the world.

What’s worse – at least to me – is that those who were trained with the same tenets I learned from my editor have thrown in the keyboard.

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, and that’s what

news organizations have done today.

News today is not a quest for quality, it’s a search for quantity, and most news executives believe that if a story can draw eyeballs, through print, TV or digital, it’s a worthwhile story to tell because the almighty ad dollar wants to be where the eyeballs congregate.

Earlier this week, I had a conversation with my mother about the current state of national news and the focus on the horrific mass shootings that seemingly dominate news coverage every single day.

Obviously, the national discourse focuses on tightening up our gun control, which, to me, sounds a lot like banning cars because drunk drivers kill people with them.

Next, the conversation moves to mental illness and how that may have something to do with the increase in mass shootings.

I won’t enter those conversations more than I already have, but I can talk about one thing that I know as well as most – media. Are we culpable for these mass shootings? Are we the ones egging unstable people to grab guns and kill innocent students and bystanders?

There are plenty of people who believe so, and I can’t say I blame them. I once worked in a profession that frowned on drawing attention to events that could ultimately be duplicated by fellow humans on the edge of carrying out dreadful acts.

But I also see the other side of this, and it’s difficult to justify in my own mind. If a shooter walked into a school in one of the communities we cover, would our newspaper just turn around and ignore the scene? What would consumers think of us?

Here’s what I know best about media: We change when consumers demand that we change. You’ve heard the saying, “If it bleeds, it leads.” That’s most true on local TV, where news anchors start every broadcast with a story from a bad part of town where two people were shot.

The reason TV news has stuck to that formula is because viewers keep the TV turned on when that happens. And when ratings season rolls around, that’s the only thing that matters in the financial health of a news organization.

People like you and me will always be “attracted” to news of the perverse. But as we’re having a conversation about the dangers of guns (and pencils that spelled words wrong and cars that ran over innocent victims), I believe my profession deserves a great deal of the blame.

The media are a powerful lot. If you don’t believe me, look at the change we can impact – media’s focus on Planned Parenthood just changed their policy of payments for aborted fetuses.

We do have the ability to make a strong impact on our society. Unfortunately, we also tell the appalling stories that seem to repeat over and over again.

Development Briefs Realty agent sentenced to seven years in prison for racketeering A U.S. district judge sentenced a real estate agent to seven years in prison and three years of supervised release following his October 2013 conviction on federal racketeering charges.

Nathan Shane Wolf, 44, participated in a mortgage fraud scheme accounting for more than $13 million in fraudulently obtained loans, according to trial evidence.

Witnesses testified that Wolf arranged for builders to pretend to sell luxury real estate at inflated prices to secure inflated mortgage loans from a bank. Builders accepted the lower price, while Wolf arranged for the difference between the inflated and true prices to be paid from the loan proceeds as kickbacks.

Wolf received more than $200,000 in commissions on the fraudulent transactions, according to the sentencing hearing.

The days are shorter, the weather’s cooler and families across the area are preparing to enjoy the festivities of fall – pumpkin carving, corn mazes, haunted trails and, of course, Halloween.

The town of Pineville will host its annual FallFest Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17, at Pineville Lake Park.

Calvary Church will host a fall festival on Oct. 30, a Friday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the church’s Calvary Life Center.

The festival is geared toward families with preschool and grade school-aged children, and will feature carnival games, candy prizes, hayrides and a show by Wild Animal Encounters with Isaiah Blair. Live animals will include a bearded dragon lizard, baby crocodile, hybrid wolf and ball python.

Spooky Thrills Matthews ‘Haunted Trail’ along Four Mile Creek Greenway

The annual Matthews Haunted Trail will return this weekend to the Four Mile Creek Greenway.

The event will be held Oct. 16, 17, 23 and 24, rain or shine, from 6 to 10 p.m. each night. The trail begins at the new greenway connector at the Matthews Community Center, located at 100 E. McDowell St. in

Matthews. Cost is $3 per person.

The Haunted Trail is a joint effort between the Matthews Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resource Department; the Matthews Police Explorers; and the South Charlotte Homeschool Key Club. The event is recommended for individuals 10 years old and older who don’t mind the dark and aren’t frightened of actors, according to a news release.

Ghost Tour of Downtown Matthews

The Matthews Heritage Museum will host the inaugural Ghost Tour of Downtown Matthews at two times next weekend.

Tours are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Local historian Paula Lester will lead attendees throughout the historic downtown district along Trade Street. Tourists will learn about Matthews History and “encounter a number of ‘spirits’ from different time periods,” according to a news release.

In addition, the museum will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. and feature a special visit from “Daisy Massey,” daughter of famed Matthews physician Dr. H.V. Massey, who will be mourning the death of her father in 1902. “Daisy” will share with visitors the mourning customs practiced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This October, Aw Shucks! Farm’s haunted trail, The 13th Acre, promises to offer visitors “the scariest year yet for The 13th Acre that will send you running for the exit,� according to its website.

Planning continues for regional road projects

Regional leaders have been meeting this month to plan for major transportation projects. Here’s a round-up of their progress.

I-485 Express Lanes The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) continues to survey commuters about the Interstate 485 Express Lanes project, which involves installing toll lanes intended to make rush hour traffic more manageable.

The Ballantyne Breakfast Club organized a presentation with NCDOT representatives on Oct. 12 at South Mecklenburg Presbyterian Church. Reps discussed the project and distributed surveys.

Surveys gauged which access points to the toll lanes along I-485 residents feel would be most useful, such as between I-77 and South Boulevard; PinevilleMatthews and Johnston roads; Johnston and Rea roads; Rea and Providence roads; Providence and Weddington roads; and Weddington Road and John Street.

Residents were also asked about direct connections to the toll lanes from Westinghouse Boulevard and Johnston and Weddington roads. Residents also could list alternate access points and direct

connections.

The $202.9-million project is estimated to start construction in 2017.

The I-485 toll project hasn’t generated as much disdain as its Interstate 77 counterpart, in which the NCDOT is engaged in a 50-year public-private partnership with a foreign company to operate toll lanes from uptown Charlotte to Mooresville.

Each of the NCDOT’s 14 divisions, as well as local groups like the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization, submit projects to be scored by a formula.

Projects determined to be of highest priority are placed on the next state transportation improvement program, a 10-year plan updated every two years.

The NCDOT held an open house Oct. 15 at Matthews town hall to gain input on transportation priorities for Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Stanly and Union counties.

Seven projects are proposed for submission into the state’s planning process, including: • Widening Ardrey Kell Road to four lanes from U.S. 521 to Rea Road in Charlotte.

• Widening of Lancaster Highway to four lanes from N.C. 51 to U.S. 521 in Pineville.

• Improving the intersection of U.S. 74/Secrest Shortcut Road in Monroe.

The NCDOT also will accept written comments through 5 p.m. Nov 2.

CMS third-graders learn about fire safety courtney@carolinaweeklynewspapers.com

Every third-grader in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools learned about fire safety last week during Fire Prevention Week, thanks to the Charlotte Fire Department.

The department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fire Marshall’s Office visited every third-grade classroom in more than 100 elementary schools in the district to teach them about fire prevention tips.

Charlotte Fire taught students about the importance of a working smoke alarm; teaching their families about fire safety; selecting a meeting place in case of a fire; staying low under smoke during a fire; and calling 911 in emergencies, said Amy Krise, of Charlotte Fire.

Krise explained to the students that the most fires happen in homes, but fires can occur elsewhere, such as at school.

Charlotte Fire kicked off the week at Rama Road Elementary School with a visit from Mecklenburg Chief Fire Marshall Ted Panagiotopoulos, Paul Wilkinson, the chief fire investigator for the city of Charlotte and other representatives from the county fire marshal’s office and Charlotte Fire.

“This week is most important because most of our student population goes home and takes care of siblings or takes care of themselves (because parents are working),”

Rama Road Principal Patricia Denny said.

“We want to give kids the tools to advocate for themselves.”

Wilkinson believes the fire department’s partnership with CMS is important because children’s brains are “sponges,” and they take home what they hear. Teaching them about fire safety will allow them to share fire safety information with their parents.

He reminds kids that the way fire is portrayed on television and movies isn’t accurate and encourages kids to leave a fire immediately.

“Fire is a real thing,” Wilkinson said. “A small fire can do damage.”

Panagiotopoulos added nationally fire departments have placed a greater emphasis on prevention, and since the initiative, structure fires are down.

Charlotte Fire also hosted a poster and two-minute video contest for students to display their fire safety knowledge. This year, Polo Ridge Elementary School earned first place and $3,000 for their poster, and Ballantyne Elementary School earned second place and $500.

Charlotte Fire hopes students will take the knowledge home and share it with their families.

Beverly Woods earns National Blue Ribbon distinction

Beverly Woods Elementary School was recognized by the United States Department of Education as one of the 335 schools nationally and three schools in North Carolina as a National Blue Ribbon school.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap, according to a news release. In its 33-year history, more than 8,000 American schools have earned the award.

“It is phenomenal,” said CMS South Learning Community Superintendent Dennis Queen. “It’s hard to get this national award and is awarded sparingly. It’s not based on just one thing.”

Queen added the award recognizes success over a long period of time and supports the work at the school.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction nominated Beverly Woods based on the school’s test scores over the past few years. The school earned a “B” this year for its school performance grade and met expected growth, with 100 percent of AMO (annual measurable objectives) targets met.

“Our teachers work hard to meet the student’s individual needs,” said Bevelry Woods Principal Caroline Clapp-Horne. “All students are making good growth, and that’s most important to us.”

Clapp-Horne credits teachers’ abilities to get to know “the whole child” for the school’s success and holds confidence in teachers to teach child “where they are.”

The principal has been with the school for 11 years and has seen the school’s success continue to grow.

“We’ve moved away from following specific mandates and into teaching what students need to learn to create a true culture of learning,” she said.

The school earned the National School of Character distinction a few years ago, which Clapp-Horne feels helped the school connect with other schools. She hopes the school will continue to grow and learn through the new distinction.

Randolph students use racing science to earn $50,000 grant

Six Randolph IB Middle School students and three faculty members earned a new advanced technology makerspace after winning the NASCAR Foundation’s inaugural P.I.T. (Promoting Innovation and Technology) Crew Project.

Team Racing Raiders participated in a national contest, in which they were tasked with creating a model to illustrate the scientific and math principles involved in racing, such as friction, applied force and air resistance. Randolph’s team chose to explain the best path for a car to take around Talladega Superspeedway.

The team, consisting of students David Starling, Nikhita Nanduri, Akshra Palmagam, Dev Chheda, Jordan Taylor and Sreyas Adiraju and teachers Jordan Stanton, Marjorie Frick and Cheri Titlebaum, then created a video explaining the model and the principles and the community voted on their favorite video. By earning the most votes, Team Racing Raiders were the inaugural winners.

“We think that NASCAR is one of the most appropriate places to try to start talking about real-world, hands-on application of science and math,” said NASCAR Foundation Executive Director Lorene King. “… It’s something that they use every single day. They use it all the time and try to tweak the cars to try to identify the best path around the track and, also, the world of NASCAR is so complex; there are so many different areas in it. So, we designed this contest for the middle schoolers to encompass as much as we possible could through teamwork – for the students to take a different ‘position’ in the pit crew and to be responsible for a certain area.”

NASCAR drivers Jeb Burton said Matt DiBenedetto agree engineering, science and extensive research go into racing.

“It’s a lot more than just talent,” DiBenedetto said.

Burton explained the best drivers have teams who have perfected the science of racing, which makes the sport more difficult because of all the components involved.

DiBenedetto joked they might be hiring Team Racing Raiders in the future to be engineers on their teams.

Stanton, the team’s coach, allowed students to build a scale model racetrack with a 3D bank in his classroom to work with the project. He said students could apply physics to real-world applications.

“They learn it in class, but there’s only so much they actually retain, especially when it’s just me talking, but, with this, they realize the things they learn in school actually happens, which is not always obvious,” he said.

The project’s grand prize was a $50,000 grant toward a customized renovation for the school and Randolph chose to add an advanced technology learning center, or makerspace, to their media center.

The center includes a 3D printer, laser cutter, sewing machine, various tools, coding kits and Cad software.

“Makerspaces are becoming very popular.

Think of it as ‘shop class on steroids.’ That’s how I think of it,” said Randolph Principal Brian Bambauer. “We used to make a bird house, but now it’s high tech.”

Bambauer hopes students learn soft skills, such as collaboration and creativity, while using the makerspace, which was revealed on Oct. 8.

The principal said the next step for the school is to train teachers and students how to effectively and safely use the equipment.

“Once we get through that training phase, no one’s really sure where this is going to lead – it’s very exciting,” Bambauer said. “I know students will come up with some amazing things in here. There will be problem solving. There will be creating. There will be repurposing things, which is also part of this makerspace philosophy, where you can take old technology and take it apart and make something new.”

Randolph also earned a trip for 300 students to visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

King said the foundation worked with

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the NASCAR Hall of Fame to fine-tune the project for next year. They welcome new teams to participate in the project next year.

“We believe children are our future,” she said. “Children are the future of our sports, as well as the future of our country. We want to be a leading innovator of providing learning opportunities for children.

CMS teacher turnover rates increasing

The number of teachers leaving CharlotteMecklenburg Schools and North Carolina public schools increased from last year, according to a report by the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

In CMS, the teacher turnover rate was 15.1 percent in 2013-14, but increased to 16.49 percent, or 1,420 teachers, in 2014-15, according to the 2014-15 Annual Report on Teachers Leaving the Profession. The state turnover rate increased from 14.12 percent in 2013-14 to 14.84 percent, or 14,255 teachers, in 2014-15.

“In the past five years, the state’s teacher turnover rate has increased in all but one year (2013-14). We won’t reverse this trend until we address the root causes of why teachers leave the classroom,” State Superintendent June Atkinson said in a news release.

The highest district turnover rate in the state was Northampton County with a 33.55 percent rate and the lowest was Graham County with a 5.75 percent rate.

The Top 5 self-reported reasons for turnover for 2014-15 included: to teach in another state public school district; retired with full benefits; family relocation; to teach in another state; and career change.

CMS Superintendent Ann Clark has expressed concern over the teacher pipeline crisis, as more teachers are leaving the profession or North Carolina and less young people are pursuing the profession.

State legislators need to pay attention to the number of teachers leaving the state to ensure classroom sizes stay small and new teachers can fill retired teacher’s positions.

Charlotte Latin administrator named ‘outstanding educator’ Charlotte Latin School Head of Upper School Lawrence Wall Jr. received The University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award for excellence in teaching and mentorship.

The University of Chicago has welcomed nominations from students to identify outstanding high school educators.

We celebrate a guy who wouldn’t ask for directions

Who am I referring to? It’s none other than Christopher Columbus. He calculated a short cut to the East Indies by sailing westward. The problem was, he should have gone left out of port instead of going straight. While he did discover America, he didn’t reach his intended destination.

Before the days of GPS, we men would get lost. We would drive past the same gas station Rev. Tony Marciano over and over. Our wife and kids recognized the landmark having seen it three times in the last hour. We got upset when we were asked to stop and ask for directions. We knew if we just kept driving, we’d eventually reach our destination. Did we ever really reach our destination? Yes, sometimes. It was only when we stopped for gas and my wife ran inside the store that we got directions.

One time, I got lost while camping at Myrtle Beach State Park. It was 2 a.m. It was dark outside. I opened the tent to walk to the bathhouse. They had signs showing you how to get there. They did not have signs to show me how to get back to my tent site. I walked out of the bathhouse and got turned around. I started walking in what I thought was the direction to our campsite.

After 10 minutes, I was totally lost. The campground is designed in loops. I kept circling and circling for what should have been five minutes. It turned into more than

90 minutes of wandering. It was 3:30 a.m. and I still couldn’t find our tent site. I prayed a quick prayer and told God if I couldn’t find it in the next few moments, I would lie down beside a tree and sleep there for the rest of the night, waiting for daybreak. Fortunately, a few moments later, I found our tent.

We don’t like to ask for help. We see it as a sign of weakness. It’s our American rugged individualism that says, “Look at what I achieved.” I did it all by myself. We puff out our chest and look at our accomplishments.

What gets in our way is our ego. As Frank Sinatra sang, “I did it my way” and might I add – “without asking for anyone’s help.” If we do ask for help, we come across as weak. No one wants to appear weak. We want to be strong. We don’t ask for help so instead we go the wrong direction.

How do we get to the point where we are willing to ask for help?

Take your hand and hold it in front of you, palm up.

What do you see? You say, “A hand.” Good answer. What else do you see? Sometimes when I do this someone will say, “Dirt?” OK, but what else do you see? Finally, you say, “Nothing. I have nothing in my hand.” I reply, “That’s what God has been waiting for you to say. He wants you to come to him with nothing in your hand but the brokenness of your life and give it to Him. He will take that empty hand and give your life a direction you never dreamed possible.”

I am grateful for my GPS. It gets me from point A to point B. Be assured if it fails to work, don’t worry, I won’t stop and ask for directions. I’ll fire up my iPhone GPS. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just keep driving. Why? I’m a guy.

Week nine football game previews Providence at Ardrey Kell Friday at 7 p.m.

This is a must win for the Panthers if they hope to stay in the hunt for the So. Meck 8 championship. The Knights pose as a challenging obstacle on multiple fronts – dualthreat quarterback Bryce Maginley, running back Merrick Haston and defensive end Julian Okwara can all impact a game in significant guys. Slowing them down will be key for Providence.

Defensively, the Panthers, led by Dru Seabrook, Tyler Pistorio and Jordan Fehr, are a stingy unit, and have been integral to Providence’s strong start to league play. They’ll have to rise up again with another stellar performance if they hope to take down Ardrey Kell.

Butler at Rocky River Friday at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs got back on the right track with its win over Myers Park, but face another challenge from an everimproving Ravens team. Butler had to rediscover its identity once Christian Dixon, Clifton Duck and Benny LeMay were taken out of the lineup, and it did just that in its decisive victory over the Mustangs.

Running backs Antwan Bivens and Chrisean Davis-Pinckney have filled in nicely for LeMay, while wide receiver Dirk Cureton has stepped up during Duck’s absence. Defensively, Butler will have its hands full with Rocky River’s dual-threat quarterback Tyshawn Carter, but this unit should be the difference maker.

Garinger at Independence Friday at 7 p.m.

The Wildcats are the whipping boy of the city, so this should be an opportunity for Justin Hardin and his staff to play a bunch of kids and help their team improve in areas where growth is needed. Independence’s defense is light years ahead of its offense.

However, running back Quantavious McGill has emerged as a game-changing force, and he can be the X-factor that helps the Patriots offense get over the hump in games.

Providence Day charges past Latin, Butler shocks Myers Park

One day after a tough football practice during my senior year at East Burke High School my offensive line coach, Adam Hastings, told my teammates that we can always do more than we think we can.

He’s hammered that into the psyche of his players wherever he’s coached, and his Providence Day (4-3, 1-1 CISAA) team has clearly taken it to heart in his first season at the helm.

The Chargers were in need of an injection of fresh energy after going 9-15 the two previous seasons, and they got it when Hastings came aboard. Providence Day picked up another shot in the arm when it beat Charlotte Latin (5-2, 0-2 CISAA), 33-21, on Senior Night and the first conference game of the Hastings era Thursday, Oct. 8.

“These seniors are so awesome, and I’m so happy for them,” Hastings said. “They battled. I couldn’t be happier for them and the things they did. We practiced really hard, and we put them through a lot. For them to see the translation from practice to the field is awesome.”

Providence Day jumped out to a 26-0 lead, and weathered a 21-0 run by the Hawks.

The Chargers were led by quarterback John Schweitzer, who amassed 267 yards of total offense, and rushed for a touchdown, while running back Gabe Montgomery added 178 yards on the ground, and scored four touchdowns.

It was a signature victory for Hastings and his staff, and might be a momentum-building win that acts as a springboard for the rest of the season.

“We still got a lot of stuff we got to get better at,” Hastings said. “We got to elimi-

nate penalties. Other than that I’m really proud for these guys. They really deserve this, but in no way did we ever feel like we were ever an underdog. We see us as we can play with anybody we go against.”

In other news, the Providence Panthers have arrived. Providence (4-3, 3-0 So. Meck 8) beat Berry, 31-25, Friday, Oct. 9, and now it sits atop the league standings with Charlotte Catholic (6-0, 3-0 So. Meck 8) after South Meck (6-1, 2-1 So. Meck 8) fell at West Meck, 20-7, Friday, Oct. 9.

If the Panthers can keep the streak alive against an athletic and talented Ardrey Kell (4-3, 2-1 So. Meck 8) team their viability as a contender for a league title increases.

However, the Sabres can rejoin title talks if they upend the Cougars Friday, Oct. 16.

Butler (6-2, 2-1 Southwestern 4A) beat Myers Park (4-3, 1-1 Southwestern 4A), 21-7, Friday, Oct. 9, to move up a game be-

hind Independence in the conference standings.

What makes the Bulldogs win over the Mustangs so impressive was they were without some of their best players. Linebacker Christian Dixon, defensive back/wide receiver Clifton Duck and running back Benny LeMay have missed three consecutive games for undisclosed reasons, and it doesn’t appear they’ll be back in the lineup in the near future.

Surprisingly, the Patriots (4-3, 2-0 Southwestern 4A) are in great position to win the league. Independence doesn’t score a bunch of points, but it doesn’t need to when it’s keeping opponents out of the end zone. The Patriots have yielded an average 3.5 points the last two games.
