Queen City Dream Cars rental company comes to Charlotte The owners of Queen City Dream Cars recently launched their new operations in Charlotte Sunday, Nov. 1.

The company specializes in “luxury and exotic” automobile rentals for both residents and visitors to the area. Plans include rentals from manufacturers such as Ferrari, BMW, Land Rover, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, and Tesla, according to a news release.

The company also might include more world-class nameplates in the future, the release read.

“The exotic and luxury car rental model has operated successfully in major cities for over a decade,” Francesca Loparco, Queen City vice president of sales and customer service, said in the release. “The time has come for residents of Charlotte to have access to this exciting service, as well.”

Queen City Dream Cars is located in a 4,800-square-foot facility at 5241 Old Dowd Road at the Airport Commerce Park. The site will function as both the rental office and the storage and maintenance center. Clients also will have the option to arrange delivery and pickup of rentals at convenient locations.

Rental rates will start at $349 per day, offering customers “the opportunity to experience the pleasure of fine driving machines without having to worry about the costs or responsi-

Southern Christmas Show returns to Charlotte next week The Southern Christmas Show will return to Charlotte next week, with more than 400 vendors.

More than 50 vendors offer holiday food samples, including pastries, roasted pecans, dips, gourmet cheeses, soups, Moravian sugar cakes, cappuccinos, spiced teas, salsas, fudge, cookies, candies and more, according to a news release. Local wineries also will be on hand to offer tastings of everything from cabernet to muscadine.

The show also will feature crafters’ tents, shops and hundreds of holiday merchants, as well as Christmas trees from the N.C. mountains decorated in competition, along with wreaths, doors, mantels and rooms.

“The show is a tradition many in the Carolinas and beyond take seriously,” read the release. “Once they hear that recognizable jin-

gle, the Christmas sweaters and shirts come out of hiding and entire families, and groups of friends, get ready for the big day, or – in some cases – days at the show.”

The show will run from Nov. 11 to 22 at The Park Expo and Conference Center, located at 2500 E. Independence Blvd. Hours are Sunday to Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance for adults; $3 for children 6 to 12 years old; and free for children 5 years old and younger with a paying adult. Discounted tickets will be available for $9.50 at Harris Teeter locations with a VIC card, and group tickets for 20 or more people are available in advance for $9.50 each.

The show also will include a Preview Night on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $18 in advance or $22 at the door for adults, which includes parking costs and a 7.25-percent sales tax. Cost for children is the same as general admission. Purchase Preview Night tickets in advance by calling 704-376-6594.

Charlotte elected its fifth mayor in three years on Tuesday, as Democrat Jennifer Roberts defeated Republican Edwin Peacock, with 51.29 percent of the votes to Peacock’s 47.67 percent. Roberts, who will become Jennifer Roberts the city’s second female mayor, told supporters in an email that she’s looking forward to getting “right to work.”

Voter turnout for the race was significantly low, with just 14.74 percent of registered voters (94,813 out of 643,281) casting ballots; nearly 18 percent of voters participated in the 2013 election.

In District 7, incumbent Ed Driggs regained his spot on Charlotte City Council, defeating challenger Chris Turner by 5,334 votes.

City Council will retain its 9-2 Democrat majority, as Democrats Julie Eiselt, Vi Lyles, Claire Fallon and James Mitchell beat their Republican challengers.

After his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Heafner sold the nation’s largest chain of specialty Jim Heafner fitness equipment stores, which he built from the ground up, and dedicated his career to helping people build healthy financial futures.

When your mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, how did it change not only your personal life, but your professional life, as well?

Since I was losing the most important person in the world to me, I not only realized that life is not forever, but I also learned the importance of proper, proactive planning by experiencing retirement investing realities first hand ‌ Her prime financial need was now income, not growth. At some point, for most all of us, we will have that same shift in priority from growth to income.

I believe everyone needs to focus on his or her financial future; the younger we start the better. For retirees, this is especially important because they no longer have a salary, increasing the likelihood of needing to withdraw income from their nest egg.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

It is incredibly rewarding seeing older clients living with confidence because they will have an abundant lifetime income even as they face increasing health care costs. Their families don’t have to worry, “Will there be enough?,� and knowing I am able to provide that peace of mind is extremely satisfying.

What advice would you give to families with loved ones battling Alzheimer's?

At first, I used to correct my mother, reminding her that her father was not alive, but that he died 50 years ago. Every time I did this, it hurt her; she learned of her father’s death for the first time. My advice: Don’t inflict pain; let them be right ‌ Treasure the good moments ‌ Hopefully, there will be some opportunities to say, “I love you,â€? and be heard. Plan ahead for the possibility that you or your spouse could be a victim ‌ Prepare your “durable power of attorneyâ€? and a “health care power of attorney.â€? Have a financial plan that can work in good times or bad, without your direction.

News Briefs Marshalls and Homegoods to support Second Harvest bank Marshalls and Homegoods will hold a threeday in-store fundraising campaign from Friday to Sunday, Nov. 6 to 8, to support Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and help the bank provide food for families in need through the holiday season. Fifth annual cellphone drive Mark Antonich of Ameriprise Financial will hold its fifth annual Veterans Day cellphone drive for Cellphones for Soldiers. New and gently-used cellphones will be collected at Ameriprise Financial, located at 8832 Blakeney Professional Drive, suite 302. The drive will run through Nov. 25.

Cellphones for Soldiers is a national nonprofit that collects and recycles used cellphones. The organization purchases prepaid phone cards for military families through the proceeds of recycled phones, and has provided more than 213 million minutes of free talk time by sending more than 3 million calling cards to service men and women and recycling more than 11.3 million cellphones.

Local author publishes book Andria Gaskins, a resident of Matthews, released her first romance novel, “A Second Helping,” which details the story of Michelle Taylor, who’s dealing with a divorce and death of her best friend. Taylor decides to return to her maiden name, move to North Carolina and look for a new beginning.

“As a forty-something mother of two, I wanted to write a story that could only be told from the perspective of a mature woman who is a little seasoned with some real life experiences that have made her better instead of bitter,” Gaskins said in a news release.

“A Second Helping” started as a cookbook but eventually turned into a novel.

Gaskins is a graduate of Wake Forest University and has won several national cooking competitions, including Food Network’s Ultimate Recipe Showdown, Cooking Channel’s Perfect

I dressed up as a ballerina and didn't offend anyone

Two days before Halloween I received a text from my brotherin-law whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a current sophomore at my alma mater, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The text was a photo of a campaign set Hannah Chronis up in the middle of campus with a few mannequins dressed in Halloween costumes under the slogan, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our culture is not a costume.â&#x20AC;?

As a conservative who managed to graduate from one of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most liberal schools, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty used to laughing off the latest cries from the politically correct police. But the phenomena of cultural appropriation â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this idea that adapting a culture, which does not inherently belong to you, is offensive, or even racist â&#x20AC;&#x201C; seemed to be popping up everywhere this Halloween, even outside of the bubble of college campuses.

As I handed out snack-sized packs of Butterfingers and Reeseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cups to miniature Hulks, witches, ninja turtles and disco queens in our neighborhood on Halloween

night, I began thinking of my beloved childhood costumes, which, if worn today could end up going viral on Facebook with someone accusing my parents of, at the very least, insensitivity.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a peek into my array of costumes during the 90s, all of which were my own idea: Native American, Luau Barbie, Laura Ingalls Wilder (yes, the author of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Little House on the Prairieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;), a Bible character, ballerina, housewife (I was 8 years old) and farmer. And for most of them (the farmer was the exception), I looked darn cute. No one seemed to be offended by my ornate feather headdress I made myself, or my tights and tutu. But that was then.

Duke Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center for Multicultural Affairs launched a campaign with the hashtag #ourculturesarenotcostumes, filling its Facebook page with pictures of college kids holding up photos of what they deemed offensive stereotypes, including images of belly dancers, girls in Kimonos and mariachi singers. But when did dressing up as Pocahontas go from a girl dressing up as her favorite Disney character to a girl dressing as an offensive whitewashed stereotype of a victimized group of people? And why have we decided that cultural representations are not OK, but religious ones, such as dressing up like the Pope or Jesus, are?

The way I see it, most people dress up on Halloween as things, or people, they like.

You wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find a 7-year-old running around as Elsa because she hates the movie â&#x20AC;&#x153;Frozen.â&#x20AC;?

Is a white suburban kid in Marvin wearing a Cam Newton jersey being offensive because heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not black? Doubtful. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably because his favorite player is Cam Newton.

Or what about the girl dressed as a belly dancer because she loves Jasmine from the movie â&#x20AC;&#x153;Aladdin?â&#x20AC;? But at some point as an American society, we decided that as adults, people only dress up because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking to mock a particular culture or group of people.

Flip through any middle school social studies textbook and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see the phrase, â&#x20AC;&#x153;melting pot,â&#x20AC;? used a dozen times. For centuries, our country has prided itself on being a mix of cultures from all over the world â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from the food we eat to the way we dress.

As a 20-something white female born and raised in North Carolina, am I appropriating Mexican culture by eating at Zapataâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s? I don't think so. I just like Zapataâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

Don't get me wrong. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not arguing we turn the other cheek and let drunken fraternity boys run rampant offending every Tom, Dick and Harry in their path. When 22year-old Alicia Lynch went to work dressed as a Boston Marathon bombing victim two years ago, we, as a nation, were appalled.

And rightfully so. There should absolutely be an element of common sense used when it comes to determining what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll â&#x20AC;&#x153;dress

upâ&#x20AC;? as on Halloween. But if an outfit isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean or exploitative, do we need to rise up and cry â&#x20AC;&#x153;racismâ&#x20AC;? every time someone puts on a sombrero?

Maybe thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gone wrong.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lost sight of common sense â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or forgotten how to use it. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re letting hypersensitivity get the best of our cultural smorgasbord of a nation.

Recipe Hot Potato Beer Cheese Soup Before I moved to Charlotte a few years ago, I lived in the beautiful lowcountry of Charleston, South Carolina. The hot, sticky, mosquito-infested summers I don’t really miss but those crisp fall days in October as the tourists are leavHannah Chronis ing and locals are coming back out onto their porches again – now those I miss every day.

I worked for a community newspaper with

publications on Sullivan’s Island and Kiawah.

If you’re familiar at all with the Charleston area, this meant on any given day I’d be traveling along the most stunning stretch of Maybank Highway, with Southern live oaks bordering the two-lane road and Spanish moss dripping off the trees. It’s like you’re traveling back in time – back to a simple time when farms spanned the outside of Charleston and five-star resorts were yet to take over.

On my way out to Kiawah, I’d often pop in The Southern General for a quick bite. It’s a hole-in-the-wall gourmet sandwich shop you’d drive by and miss a million times if you weren’t intentionally looking for it. Located in the heart of Johns Island, Chef Tim Erwin has something fantastic going on in his kitchen, serving up creative snacks, favorite southern sandwiches and my personal go-to, the Lowcountry Sloppy Joe – complete with pimento cheese.

One of Erwin’s classics – and a necessity on these cooler autumn days – is his Hot Potato Beer Cheese Soup. (see Recipe on page 10)

The window of opportunity to begin cheering on the Carolina Panthers before being outed as a bandwagon fan has probably closed by now, but that’s no reason to stand in awkward silence as the water-cooler talk shifts to Charlotte’s overachieving NFL franchise.

Boil potatoes until fully cooked and soft.

Strain. Set aside. In a large sauce pan, sauté onions and garlic in whole butter until soft. Add cayenne pepper and smoked paprika. Stir. Reduce heat to low. Add flour. Mix well, stirring constantly to form paste. Remain on low heat.

Add Worcestershire and beer. Simmer while whisking for 2 minutes on low/medium heat.

Add whole milk. Mix well. Bring to simmer on medium heat, whisking frequently. Add potatoes and cheddar cheese. Mix well. Blend with hand mixer (in sauce pan) or transfer to blender and pulse until smooth. Return to sauce pan (if using blender).

Simmer on low heat for 4 to 6 minutes whisking frequently. Garnish with a pinch of smoked paprika and julienned scallion.

Serve.

Development Briefs Pineville-Matthews neighbors against proposed housing project Neighbors have filed a protest petition against a housing project off Pineville-Matthews Road, which will bump the public hearing to Dec. 14 – with a new Charlotte City Council ruling on the proposal.

Protest petitions require proposals be approved by three-fourths of the city council rather than a majority vote. State law requires public hearings with petitions not be held from Oct. 1 through election day.

Protest petitions are valid if signed by 5 percent of residents within 100 feet or 20 percent of those in the affected area.

The plan calls for the New Life Church property, about 4.3 acres, to be converted into up to 29 single-family attached dwelling units in buildings no more than two stories.

This would allow for a density of 6.4 units per acre.

City staff has brought up the need for more visibility from Pineville-Matthews Road.

The new venue will mirror its SouthPark location, featuring a wine bar and retail shop. Its location at the corner of the center, near East Boulevard, will also feature an outdoor patio.

Storage could go in mixed-use projects in south Charlotte Winston-Salem-based StorCon Development LLC is seeking an amendment in the city’s zoning ordinances that would permit self-storage facilities inside buildings within in a mixed-used development districts.

Mixed-use development is becoming more frequent in south Charlotte, where there is growing demand for people to live closer to where they work, shop and eat.

The amendment adds regulations, such as ground-floor facades facing streets should be wrapped by office, retail, beauty shops, restaurants or breweries. Buildings can’t be more than 90 feet or have signs above the third story.

The Charlotte City Council will consider the amendment during its Nov. 16 meeting.

Developer withdraws drive-thru petition in Mintworth Commons Developers have withdrawn a rezoning petition that would allow for another drive-thru restaurant at the Mintworth Commons Shopping Center along Idlewild Road.

The 21-acre site, anchored by Harris Teeter, was rezoned in 2004 to allow for three drivethrus. Conditions were placed on the rezoning that required only one restaurant drive-thru – and that could be a Chick-Fil-A. Mintworth DEI LLC sought the rezoning to be able to have two drive-thrus on the property.

Charlie Dahlem, of Mintworth DEI, said at a December 2014 community meeting that tenants in the shopping center were struggling and needed more traffic to generate crossselling, according to minutes.

Workshop to help HOA leaders The state chapter of the Community Associations Institute (CAI) will hold an open Community Law Education Day event for homeowner and condo association leaders and managers.

The event will feature presentations by attorneys from across the state who focus their practices on the complex issues facing homeowner and condominium associations.

Ballantyne artist brings artwork and more to South End

William Antonio played professional basketball in the Philippines for 15 years, but his passion for art never dwindled.

Antonio has taken art classes since he was young and began selling his artwork about eight years ago. The Ballantyne resident and his wife, Ana Amigo-Antonio, eventually fused his love for art with her passion for entertaining guests, opening The Gallery in South End about four months ago.

Antonio displays and sells his own artwork, which he describes as primarily abstract, but with impressionist elements. Local artist Miriam Durkin also recently displayed her work there, and Antonio hopes to feature other local artists in the future.

Visitors to The Gallery also can purchase wine, coffee and various cakes, pastries and desserts.

“We started (The Gallery) with that kind of concept in mind – a place to hang good artwork up and entertain people at the same time,” Antonio said.

Antonio is originally from southern California. His wife was born in the Philippines, but moved to the U.S. as a child and has called Charlotte home for years. The couple met in the Philippines during Antonio’s stint as a professional basketball player. Upon relocating to Charlotte, they discovered an emerging art culture within the city.

“It’s been a good feeling to be able to get into the Charlotte art scene,” Antonio said. “Charlotte is such an up-and-coming city – it’s definitely one that is getting that (art culture) feel.”

tainment; the couple also aims to give back, particularly through a partnership with Joedance Film Festival. The nonprofit raises funds for Levine Children’s Hospital in memory of Joe Restaino, who lost his life to cancer at 20 years old.

The Gallery’s work with the nonprofit was inspired in part by the couple’s own journey with cancer. Ana Amigo-Antonio is a blood cancer survivor who underwent a liver transplant about a year ago.

“It hits you really hard when you see a loved one going through those situations,” Amigo said. “Ana has a soft heart with that situation – it changed her whole perspective.”

High-end catering company sets sights on Charlotte

It started in Great Britain and moved to Canada; now it’s looking to move to Charlotte.

Anne Dickson and her husband, Alan, started PigOut Catering in Britain 15 years ago.

The company eventually relocated to Canada, where it has been for the past eight years, with seven business outlets in Ontario.

But recent harsh Canadian winters were tough on the business, leading the Dicksons to set their sights on Southern skies.

“In Canada, we’ve had some severe winters.

It’s been very difficult the last couple of years,” Anne Dickson said.

The company, which specializes in providing high-quality roasts, barbecue meats and fish from the grill, discovered a demand in the Charlotte area for both barbecue and high-end catering.

“We (discovered) the Carolinas are our best demographic for expanding into the U.S.,” Dickson said. “From the southern parts of North Carolina down to South Carolina, people can do the trade all year round because of the (milder) temperatures.”

PigOut Catering specializes in corporatebased luncheons and dinners, weddings and high-end parties at individuals’ homes.

PigOut Catering employs professional chefs, with at least some degree of experience, who want to operate their own business without the hassle of maintaining a storefront. The company provides a vehicle with refrigeration to store and transport the food to catering sites. All grilling is performed on site.

The company turns to local farmers and food vendors for salads and sides, and partners with local bakers for desserts.

“People are getting a high-end experience,” Dickson said. “We’re serving more casual food, but we do it with class.”

PigOut Catering is currently seeking chefs interested in operating their own catering franchise, hoping to be headquartered in Charlotte

by March 2016. Its Ontario franchises will continue to operate.

“It’s a very good business to work into a family – a husband can work full time and a wife part time,” Dickson said. “They can build it up and leave it to one of their kids.”

BOE looks to expand transportation for magnet schools

Confusion arose after CharlotteMecklenburg Schools staff presented changes to the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s magnet programs at the CMS board of education (BOE) Oct. 13 meeting, as magnet parents feared the elimination of shuttle stops for neighborhood stops.

CMS staff decided to create what they call a â&#x20AC;&#x153;hybrid transportationâ&#x20AC;? program that will include â&#x20AC;&#x153;common stops,â&#x20AC;? central location stops and shuttle stops, as well as increase available programs in the district. The changes come after an evaluation from Magnet Schools of America, a nonprofit professional education association.

Scott McCully, executive director of student placement, and Akeshia Craven-Howell, assistant superintendent of the office of school options, innovation and design, presented clarity of programs and the transportation plan at the Oct. 27 BOE meeting.

One program that could impact south Charlotte families includes a partial-magnet program in the blue transportation zone, which includes the SouthPark and Myers Park areas, in fall 2017. McCully assures district staff will continue to engage the community about what families need for magnet programs. The most magnet programs are in the blue transportation zone, which is the southwest part of the district, according to magnet program transportation maps.

Transportation concerns were the hot button topic of the evening. Parents were concerned about eliminating shuttle stops for neighborhoods, which

could increase student travel times.

Craven-Howell and Superintendent Ann Clark clarified the district desired to increase transportation options for students who might not have been able to participate in magnet programs with the transportation currently available.

The common stops refer to â&#x20AC;&#x153;assigned bus stops based on a residential studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s addressâ&#x20AC;? that would be 0.2 to 0.4 miles away from the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home depending on grade levels, CravenHowell said.

The program also will still have central location stops, which Craven-Howell refers to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;involuntary,â&#x20AC;? typically requested by multiple families and approved by CMS. The program also will retain shuttle stops at specified CMS school sites, which provide transportation for students who arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t near a common neighborhood stop. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It does not mean that we will wholesale be eliminating all shuttle stops,â&#x20AC;?

Clark said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It means that we want to make sure that any student who wants to participate in a magnet lottery knows that he or she can have a common neighborhood stop available and that a shuttle stop does not stand in the way of a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s participation in a magnet program.â&#x20AC;?

Clark expects the increased options will reduce travel times on buses, give parents more time with their students in the car and could mean students can sleep in longer.

A parent from Kennedy Middle School, a partial magnet school, expressed concern about how the district plans to accommodate potentially increasing buses while her child has experienced a bus driver shortage. Kennedy

pulls about 100 students.

Erin Sanders, a parent of a seventhgrader at Randolph Middle School, an IB program magnet, said her family only could participate in the magnet programs because of the shuttle stops. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just hope you use a data-driven process, which already seems like you are, (to determine the number of shuttle stops),â&#x20AC;? she said during the public hearing.

BOE at-large candidate Levester Flowers, who earned 5.73 percent of the vote, sees the hybrid transportation program as a bridge to help with student reassignment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My feeling is that magnet schools need to be the undergarment as you move forward with the student assignment plan,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;Ś (But) in no way should we be utilizing busing as a way to be dealing with anything with pupil assignment.â&#x20AC;?

He urged that reliable transportation was the key for parents to feel all students can participate in magnet programs.

The cost, which Clark estimated at the Oct. 13 BOE meeting, is $6 million, but could decrease if more parents opt for shuttle stops and with decreasing fuel costs.

The board would need to approve the hybrid transportation plan at its Nov. 10 meeting to ensure the cost is included in the budget for the 2016-17 school year and before the magnet selection process starts in December.

The BOE still has not approved a budget for the 2015-16 school year, but Clark said the board plans to approve it at the Nov. 10 meeting.

After months of debate, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools parents have their three atlarge CMS Board of Educaation seats filled with incumbents Ericka Ellis-Stewart and Mary McCray and newcomer Elyse Dashew.

Ellis-Stewart earned the most votes with 18.35 percent of votes; Dashew earned 14.88 percent of votes; and McCray, the current board chair, earned 13.77 percent of the votes.

Newcomer Jeremy Stephenson came in a close fourth, only trailing McCray by a little more than 4,000 votes, or 2 percent of the vote.

Ellis-Stewart earned a high concentration of votes from the 210, 211 and 212 precincts in the Long Creek and north Charlotte areas, according to unofficial Mecklenburg County Board of Election results; Dashew earned top votes in the Providence and Ballantyne areas, as well as in the 206 precinct, which is in the most northern part of the county; and McCray gained a high concentration of votes in the Mallard Creek area and north Charlotte.

Dashew said she was â&#x20AC;&#x153;overjoyedâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;overwhelmed,â&#x20AC;? but was ready to dive into CMSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenges and opportunities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I do think that there is a lot of support for our public schools in our community and CMS needs help with harnessing that support,â&#x20AC;? she said.

She believes her advocacy background will help connect those people with the education community.

The three board members will be sworn in at the boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s December meeting.

CMS earns highest score in math in national assessment

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools topped scores on national tests compared to 21 urban districts, according to the 2015 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA), which tests reading and math biannually.

The district had the highest average scale scores in fourthand eighth-grade math and ranked second in fourth-grade reading and third in eighth-grade reading among tested districts; however, 2015 results varied little from 2013 scores.

The NAEP assesses a sample of fourth- and eighth-graders across the country, aligned with the Common Core standards adopted by various states, including North Carolina.

CMS and state say since the tests are uniformly administered using the same set of test booklets, the results provide a common metric to make comparisons across districts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools continues to outperform most other major school systems across the country thanks to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, principals and support staff,â&#x20AC;? said CMS Superintendent Ann Clark. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While we are proud that our students are scoring ahead of many others, we also acknowledge our overall scores are not where we want them to be. We still have much work to do and are committed to continuing our progress.â&#x20AC;?

CMS and North Carolina students had an average fourthgrade reading score of 226, higher than all but two TUDA districts, which either tied or held higher scores. CMS trumped the national average and large cities average scores, which were 221 and 214, respectively.

CMS has already voiced concern regarding gaps between black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students versus white students in college and career readiness rate in third-through-eighth-grade reading scores. There is at least a 43-percent gap between those groups and white students.

CMS ranked first out of the 21 districts in fourth-grade and eighth-grade math, and aced state, large cities and nation scores.

was 234 and national score was 240. The average eighthgrade math score for CMS was 286 compared to the North Carolina score (281), large cities (274) and national public schools (281).

The gap still remains between white students and their black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged counterparts by at least 36 percent.

However, the NAEP also reported by the percentage of students scoring at or above achievement levels â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Basic, Proficient and Advanced. Basic compares to a Level 3 in Common Core standards; Proficient to Level 4; and Advanced to Level 5. Level 4 and 5 denote a child is â&#x20AC;&#x153;college and career ready.â&#x20AC;?

Approximately 47.4 percent of CMS students were considered college and career ready (C&CR) in third-grade reading, compared to 38 percent of North Carolina students who were at or above Proficient. Thirty percent of North Carolina students were at or above Proficient in eighthgrade reading and 44.1 percent of CMS students were considered C&CR. Fifty-one percent of CMS third-graders are C&CR in math compared to the 44 percent proficient in the state, and 42.6 percent of CMS eighth-graders are C&CR in math compared to 33 percent in the state. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The 2015 NAEP data show Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools continues to be one of the leading school districts in the country,â&#x20AC;? Charlotte Latin serves for a cure

Ardrey Kell teacher earns award

Charlotte Latin School hosted the 14th annual Serve for the Cure Volleyball Tournament on Sept.

26 to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Three hundred volleyball players from 22 teams and 11 schools participated in the tournament and raised $30,350. The following south Charlotte schools participated: Ardrey Kell High School; Charlotte Christian School; Providence High School; and Covenant Day School. The players from all schools raise fund by selling raffle tickets.

The tournament began 14 years ago by retired Charlotte Latin Coach Suzie Pignetti and is the largest teen-run event in support of breast cancer awareness and research in North Carolina, according to a news release.

Over the last 13 years, the tournament has raised and donated $364,000 to Susan G. Komen Charlotte. This year the money raised was donated to Komen Charlotte and The Dr. Teresa Flippo-Morton Surgical Oncology Fund of the Levine Cancer Institute.

Ardrey Kell High School Exceptional Children teacher Jan Miller was selected as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schoolsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Exceptional Children Teacher of Excellence for the 201415 school year.

Miller is the department chair for Ardrey Kellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Exceptional Children department.

She was recognized at the North Carolina Exceptional Children Conference on Nov. 4.

I thought it was called Go-Karts, not Bumper Karts

Having young adult children, I enjoy when we get together. We’ve started a tradition of going to the beach on an annual vacation. The last day of our trip, we have a ritual of going to the “unlimited ride” go-kart track.

You need to know I love gokarts. If you were to see me on a go-kart, you’d think I went from mild mannered “Clark Kent” to “Superman.” If you could pause Rev. Tony Marciano me during a race, you’d see my eyes are dilated, my blood pressure is up and my pulse is racing. I have one thing on my mind – winning.

The track announcer where we all raced kept saying, “There is no bumping, no swerving, no reckless driving.

If you do, you will be evicted from the park.” As he is saying this, I am bumping, swerving and doing whatever it took to stay in the lead.

It reached a point where the entire family decided we weren’t racing; we were banging into one another. We would spin each other out, turn each other around, and most importantly, bang into one another. Everyone wanted to win. Everyone wanted to race ahead of each other.

Everyone did whatever it took to take the lead and remain No. 1. Each race we did the same thing again; we raced with no limits as to who was the best driver. We raced with one thing in mind – win and take no prisoners.

I wouldn’t trade the fun we had. But, vacation comes to

an end and we have to come back to reality and get back to work. There, the challenge isn’t “win-lose.” It should be “win-win.” It’s about coming to our workplace with a servant’s heart. In go-karts, I win at all costs, no matter if I spin my entire family around. At work or in the home, it needs to be different. I need to serve the people I lead to help them be successful.

Now compare that to go-karts. I can’t imagine racing and moving over for my daughter-in-law, Delee, so she can pass me and be in the lead. That never happened. In fact, she and I were racing on the oval loop. I kept turning my head to the left and right trying to see if she was on either side of me. If I saw her on the right, I moved to the right and cut her off. If I saw her on the left, I turned in that direction to block her from passing me. When my son tried to pass me on the left, I turned my wheels hard to the left and pinned him against the wall so I could stay in the lead.

My daughter-in-law had it right. She would later tell me that she stayed behind and “tag-teamed” me so that no one got around the both of us. Delee was the real servant leader.

She chose to be No. 2 and allow me to be No. 1. She allowed me to win and allowed herself to race in my shadow. I didn’t know she was doing that. I thought I was a better driver and was out-driving her. Instead, she put her need to be No. 1 aside so that someone else (that being me) could be No. 1.

So go ahead and race real hard in life. You might be in the lead because someone else understands servant leadership.

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Country Day girls’ tennis team three-peats as state champs

Charlotte Country Day girls’ tennis team didn’t even have to play all nine sets before it beat Charlotte Latin, 5-0, to win the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state championship Saturday, Oct. 31.

Ironically, the title match was played at Providence Day, which beat the Buccaneers three years ago in the state championship.

Country Day’s seniors never forgot the pain of that loss to the Chargers, and channeled those emotions from that 5-4 defeat into motivation to never feel that way again.

Country Day, led by its seniors Avery Hunter, Ishana Nigam and Kylie Maher, has come full circle since that loss to Providence Day by beating Latin to win its third consecutive state championship.

“These seniors, from that point on they understood what it meant to become a champion,” Country Day coach Calvin Davis said.

“They understood the pain of losing, and I

“They were determined over the next three years to be champions and that’s what they did and went out and played and worked together, they bonded together and they were one of the most together teams I’ve ever coached at Country Day. As a coach I feel so good about looking into their faces and seeing the pride they take away from this season.”

The Bucs have much to be proud of. Not only, did they win another state championship, but they dominated their competition on their way to a perfect 20-0 record.

Davis said Country Day never went out to dominate other teams, because showing good sportsmanship is important to him and the Buccaneer program.

“I went out to win matches, but at the end of the day you realize you did dominate,” Davis said. “I think the players and the parents at the end realized how well we dominated the field, and I think it gave them a sense of pride of just how strong a team they really were.”

The Bucs strongest moment came on the highest stage. Maher, who was the team captain, said she and her teammates knew they could win it after they won their third doubles match.

“I think the best moment for me was at that point and of course the end of it all, which of course was amazing,” Maher said. “Getting that third state championship was awesome.

It was awesome to see everyone put that work in, and get the results we were looking for. It was a great season.”

of the match came when Hunter and Nigam beat Fleming Landau and Margaret Redic in their doubles match, 8-2, after losing to them twice in the regular season.

Hunter, who is Country Day’s No. 1 player, won her first singles match against Landau, beating her 6-0, but the state championship was called before the second set was finished.

“We knew we had to work really hard to win the match, and we played really hard,” Hunter said. “It was a great match. It was awesome. In the first set, I was playing probably the best I’ve ever played. Fleming is a great player. She and I always have really good matches. It was a great match overall.”

Nigam said this season was special. She added winning the state championship was an emotional moment and that she takes pride in this Country Day team.

“We showed how strong of a team we had,” Nigam said. “As a senior I was really happy to see how much we progressed throughout the years.”

Charlotte Country Day junior crosscountry runner Ella Dunn finished third in the NCISAA 3A State Championship meet, running it in 19 minutes and 12.5 seconds at McAlpine Greenway Park Friday, Oct. 30.

South Meck sophomore crosscountry runner Haywood Ferguson won the NCHSAA 4A West Regional meet, completing it in 16 minutes and eight seconds at McAlpine Greenway Park Saturday, Oct. 31.

Q: It’s been a pretty special season for you hasn’t it?

A: Yes, it’s been pretty nice. I’ve only lost once, and we’ve had eight races.

Q: What does it mean for you to have such success?

A: It’s really important. I definitely love running, but you got to balance everything else.

Academics comes first even though it’s kind of annoying at times, but you got to study.

Q: What has been the highlight for you this year?

A: The highlight would be winning conference and regionals, because those were two goals I set early in the preseason. To see them accomplished was cool.

Q: What are some interests and hobbies outside of cross-country?

A: Mountain biking is a big hobby. I like to do that with my friends, and then ultimate Frisbee is a big thing I play every week on Fridays. We have a club called SMUC, which is South Meck Ultimate Club. We meet every Friday, and play ultimate Frisbee.

Q: What’s something unique about yourself?

A: I’m a youth group leader at my church,

Q: What’s gratifying about your finish at states?

A: It was really exciting, because this is my first year of cross-country, so I wasn’t expecting much going into it, but we had some really good coaches, and a really good team this year, so I was excited. I thought it would be fun. It was a good season. I’m just excited I could do well at the final meet.

Q: What did you enjoy most about cross-country at Country Day? A: I’ve run track my whole life, but I’ve never run cross country. Track is more of an individual sport, but cross-country it’s really a team sport. You’re competing with your team. You pump your team up before each meet. You’re working together to train hard, and I thought that was really fun this year. It’s been a great experience at Country Day, and we have great coaches and great athletes on the team.

Q: What do you like to do outside of running cross-country and track?

A: Outside of running cross-country and track I like to do other sports. I like to go rock climbing, [and] hang out with my friends. I’m part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters. It’s really cool.

Top seed South Meck (18-0-2, 13-0-1 So. Meck 8) beat West Meck, 5-0, in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state playoffs Wednesday, Nov. 4. The win completes a three-win sweep of the Hawks, outscoring them by a combined 23-0.

South Meck was without three starters – senior forward/midfielder Marco Garcia, junior midfielder/forward Reed Hunnicutt and senior midfielder/forward Manuel Figueroa – but the Sabres didn’t drop off.

Juniors, midfielder Tomas Figuieredo and forward/defender Collyn Carpenter provided stellar performances in their absence. Carpenter found Figuieredo, who scored the first two goals of the game to put the Sabres in control early.

“It’s a tribute to the rest of our guys that we were able to step up and play as well as we did,” said South Meck coach Eric White. “I like to see that we have 24 guys that can contribute. It showed itself. It was nice to see other guys step into those starting roles and we didn’t miss a beat. We had guys score that normally don’t. It was a good group effort.”

South Meck advances to face Mallard Creek (11-12-1, 9-1 MeCKa 4A) in the second round Saturday, Nov. 7. White expects Figueroa, Garcia and Hunnicutt to be back in the lineup by then.

Country Day soccer falls to Wesleyan in NCISAA championship Charlotte Country Day boys’ soccer team (14-5-4, 8-0-1 CISAA) overcame the loss of eight starters from last year’s roster to make it to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state championship for the third consecutive season before losing Wesleyan Christian Academy, 1-0, at North Raleigh Christian Academy Saturday, Oct. 31.

“If you had told me before the season started that we would finish in the state championship in a 1-0 loss to Wesleyan, who is in the Top 5 in the nation, in an extremely competitive final I would have said wow, that seems like a little bit of a long stretch, because we lost so much talent from last year,” Charlotte Country Day coach Dustin Swinehart said. “I would absolutely take that.”

The Buccaneers were led by their senior team captains – Justin Geisel, Eli Roddey and John Moore. Seniors Alex Weir and Jack Vaughn and junior Giovanni Fanara also stepped up in significant ways.

“This group joined together and grew throughout the course of this season probably more than any team I’ve coached at Country Day,” Swinehart said. “There were so many unknowns coming into this year.”
