Ballantyne housing project could double density Residents begin speaking out about 95-home proposal

A 95-unit housing project proposed for North Community House Road could mean trouble in paradise for residents of the Bexley at Ballantyne and The Vineyard subdivisions.

David Weekley Homes is seeking rezoning to build a gated community with about 68 townhomes and 27 single-family homes on 15 acres bordering Paradise Ridge Road.

The property is zoned residential with a density of three homes per acre. The David Weekley Homes proposal comes in at six homes per acre.

Eric Howard moved with his wife from California to Ballantyne to find a good place to raise their daughter.

Howard, president of the homeowners association at The Vineyard, said a lot of residents in surrounding neighborhoods believe an increase in density will lead to more congested roads and overcrowded schools.

There’s also concern among residents that the Charlotte Department of Transportation could encourage David Weekley Homes to create a connection between the incoming development and The Vineyard.

With the potential of pedestrian access from Paradise Ridge Road, residents worry that on-street parking might make for tight squeezes on the street.

Residents also are worried about the height of the townhouses immediately across the street from Vineyard houses. The townhouses could be several feet above the street due to a grading differential.

“The developer makes a valid point that open or underdeveloped areas are ripe for development,” Howard said. “It’s a hot market. We’re kind of looking for smart

David Weekley Homes has already introduced the project at a community meeting. Jim Anderson, of Bexley at Ballantyne, said representatives from nearby neighborhoods have had a number of conversations with Charlotte City Councilman Ed Driggs.

Ray Eschert, a member of the Charlotte Planning Commission/Zoning Committee, is aware of the petition.

Eschert said he looks forward to receiving the latest revisions and seeing the city council discuss the petition, which could be as early as Dec. 14.

As more development comes to Community House Road, drivers are finding themselves trapped in their neighborhoods at certain times of day, Anderson said.

Healthcare Marketplace expert Kyle Romanat recently became an independence insurance agent, opening south Charlotte-based insurance company, Health Market Genius.

Romanat’s company allows him to offer clients more options for “complex health insurance offerings,” according to a news release.

Formerly with the Farm Bureau, Romanat has been in the health insurance industry for 19 years.

“He is known by both peers and clients for his deep understanding of all areas of health insurance, but is especially sought after for his knowledge of how to negotiate the Affordable Care Act Marketplace maze,” read the release.

Charlotte real estate firm expands to Raleigh area The Chambers Group, an X Team International partner and full-service real estate brokerage firm, recently announced the opening of its second location, which will be stationed in Raleigh.

The Charlotte-based firm specializes in tenant and landlord representation. Jenn Olevitch-Roberson will lead the Raleigh location, according to a news release.

“The Raleigh real estate market is absolutely booming, with new projects coming out of the ground and retailers looking to enter the market. The time is right for this strategic growth, and we’re thrilled that Jenn will be leading the charge,” Chambers Group Principal Jay Chambers said in the release.

The office opened Oct. 1, and The Chambers Group plans to add approximately six new and seasoned brokers to the Raleigh team over the next year.

Dear Santa, fulfill Charlotte’s most glaring needs

I’m too old to sit on Santa’s lap, so I’m going to visit SouthPark Mall and pay a kid to give that bearded fat man my Christmas wish list.

No “Star Wars” toys on my list. I’m hitting Old Saint Nick up for some of Charlotte’s most glaring needs.

Here’s what I’m thinking so far (some of which we don’t even have to depend on Santa): • Re-evaluate our land use: With the Charlotte City Council beginning a new term, it’s time to engage in some long-range planning.

The South District Plan dates back to 1993.

The SouthPark Small Area Plan is 15 years old.

Desirable development projects have evolved since then. Let’s blow off the dust.

• Get a handle on traffic: While we’re studying land use, we should direct the Charlotte Department of Transportation to commission a traffic study for south Charlotte. The public relations team could survey residents about the maximum amount of time they are willing to sit in gridlock before leaving town.

• Figure out redistricting: Busing children from one neighborhood to another seems like an expensive, quick fix to me. It’s time we stop relying on the school district to solve social problems that our community continues to ignore. We need to diversify our neighborhoods, not our schools.

Let’s encourage family and neighborhood involvement with the backing of schools, churches and nonprofits. Santa, bring us together.

Glacier lands SouthPark Mall in hot water SouthPark Mall made many people’s naughty lists after news broke Nov. 6 that it was substituting a glacier for a Christmas tree in its annual Santa Claus attraction.

More than 25,000 people signed a petition at Change.org calling for people to tell the mall and its parent company, Simon Malls, to restore the Christmas tree.

“We’re adding key elements to the Santa set this week and listening to our customer feedback, we will now include a traditional Christmas tree,” the mall tweeted the next day.

• Do something about the homeless: Walk by the Omni Charlotte Hotel in uptown and you’ll see people on city benches bundled up in blankets. Some sleep on the ground since the benches have seat dividers. It gives tourists a bad vibe and feels inhumane when we can’t help them.

• Open a craft brewery: The suds have nearly dissolved since South Charlotte Weekly put a half-empty beer mug on its Aug. 21 cover, declaring a “craft absence” in this area. Surely an entrepreneur can show us some liquid courage to open the first.

• Stock up for championship parade: I’m sure we’re going to need plenty of blue, black and white confetti for our Super Bowl L championship celebration.

I just realized my list is kind of altruistic.

Maybe I won’t get a lump of coal this year.

$28M upgrades sought for nature museum

Discovery Place has unveiled a $28.7-million proposal to update the 69-year-old Charlotte Nature Museum and put it on par with similar attractions in Durham, Greensboro and Raleigh.

The nonprofit envisions not only expanding the museum from 13,000 to 29,000 square feet, but also integrating the building with surrounding outdoor space, including Freedom Park and the Little Sugar Creek Greenway. The museum currently uses about 40 percent of the outdoor space.

Visitors would experience more modern, interactive exhibits inside and a canopy walk outside in which they can observe otters playing in large water tanks. “We think we have organized the right project at the right time to meet the needs of our audience,�

If construction begins in 2018, the new museum could open in 2020, a year before its 75th anniversary.

The $28.7-million proposal includes the following: • $14.3 million for building, parking and site upgrades; • $12.2 million for exhibits and programming; and • $2.2 million for the endowment to support accessibility efforts. “One of the things that really sets us apart is the fact that we have chosen to do a multisite business model that places us closer to where our

audiences are,� she said. “We have long-standing public-private partnerships around facilities.�

Traditionally, Discovery Place raises money for exhibits and programming in its facilities, while municipalities focus on the building and site costs. So the ultimate request to the county could be a split. “If this is something the county wants to be involved in, we would work with staff to determine the right mix,� Horne said.

Bill James could be among commissioners that need convincing. He said the commission would have to base its support on what’s in the best financial interests of the county.

James also acknowledged he didn’t understand the difference between the Charlotte Nature Museum and some of the nature preserves, centers and parks that the recreation department oversees.

County Commissioner George Dunlap said he’d support a $28 million ask, because he thinks

it’s that valuable, but he’d certainly much rather pay $14 million. “One of the things we fail to recognize is the strength that certain corporate citizens bring to what we offer,� Dunlap said. “(Discovery Place has) certainly done a great job in terms of building a board that has the capacity to generate and raise dollars.�

Improvements to the Charlotte Nature Museum wouldn’t affect the pipeline of Mecklenburg park and recreation projects, but would be part of the next capital planning cycle, County Manager Dena Diorio said. Commissioners will eventually talk about priorities and which projects they’d like to fund, she said.

Discovery Place leaders are framing the Charlotte Nature Museum as a recreational amenity serving the community with the potential to become a regional attraction.

They said the museum could help meet the educational demands in science, technology, engineering and math, while also providing greater economic accessibility.

As many as 10,000 students from CharlotteMecklenburg Schools and surrounding districts visited the Charlotte Nature Museum last year, Horton said. Discovery Place has increased accessibility to the community by reducing the cost of admission for families receiving government assistance from $8 to $1.

There also is an opportunity to attract more visitors by shifting the focus from early childhood audience to all ages. Discovery Place believes an update would increase attendance from 65,000 local visitors to 160,000 regional visitors annually.

South Charlotte oral surgery practice supports Safe Alliance for the holidays

The horror of domestic violence is all too real for Chrissy Henderson.

Henderson, the director of patient experience for south Charlotteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sharma Oral Surgery, admittedly had preconceived notions about domestic violence â&#x20AC;&#x201C; until it hit home with the death of her cousin, Carla, in 2012.

Sharma Oral Surgery has organized charity efforts during the holidays for 13 years, previously supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters, Thompson Child & Family Focus, Toys for Tots and others.

For the past three years, the practice has supported Safe Alliance, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that provides a shelter to domestic violence victims. But its support for Safe Alliance is stronger this year with Henderson â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who began working for Sharma a little less than a year ago â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on board. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This year, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little more personal, near and dear, because of the history that has unfortunately hit my family,â&#x20AC;? Henderson said.

Dr. Priveer Sharma, the practiceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s namesake, donated $3,000 worth of supplies for Safe Allianceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Holiday Store â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where Safe Alliance clients can shop for free for clothes, kitchen appliances, bath items, toys, games, gift cards and more.

The donations are currently displayed in Sharmaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office, partially to encourage patients and the community to donate to the cause.

The office also hopes to inspire other practices to join the efforts, as well, Henderson said.

But Henderson also hopes it will be a conversation starter â&#x20AC;&#x201C; particularly about the fact that domestic violence can happen to anyone.

Carla was well-educated and held high positions in a Virginia public school system.

Her husband, Travis, came from a good home with no history of violence, Henderson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She did not fit what you typically think as (the profile) of someone being abused â&#x20AC;Ś He was not what you tend to think a typical abuser was like,â&#x20AC;? Henderson said.

But in April 2012, following a divorce hearing, Travis violated a domestic violence protection order and allegedly killed Carla, her 76-year-old grandmother and their 14month-old daughter in a deadly shootout and arson. He was subsequently shot and killed after opening fire on police who responded to the scene. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It opened my eyes to (the issue) and changed what I thought about those that are being abused,â&#x20AC;? Henderson said.

Hearing Carlaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tragic story also motivated Sharma team members to do more to give back, as it put a face to domestic violence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real issue, and this practice this year, outside of other years, has been able to put a face with the ugly thing thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behind (abuse),â&#x20AC;? Henderson said.

Sharma Oral Surgery will collect supplies for the Safe Alliance Holiday Store through Dec. 16. People can drop off donations at the practice, located at 12312 Copper Way, suite 100.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education (BOE) incumbents Mary McCray and Erika Ellis-Stewart, and newcomer Elyse Dashew, will be sworn in for four-year terms at the BOE’s December meeting, but attention still focuses on student assignment.

Parents on both sides of the spectrum share concerns over the consequences of redrawing district lines.

Some, many from high-need, low-performing schools, call for greater equality among the school district, while parents in high-performing schools, such as Providence Spring Elementary School, voice concerns over whether their family will lose the home school they’ve grown to love.

CMS schools ranked above other largest cities in the nation in math scores, yet 37 schools were on the state’s low-performing school list through earning a “D” or “F” on school performance letter grades.

School need is based on students enrolled in The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which allows schools to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students in high poverty areas

without an application process.

Some board members and parents are seeking to close the achievement gap between highand low-performing students, who often come from diverse economic backgrounds. Nationally, non-economically-disadvantaged students (EDS) perform better than EDS students in low-need schools.

Experts say school environment can make a significant impact on students.

Jonathan Travers, of non-profit consulting group Education Resource Strategies, revealed a reverse achievement gap between EDS in lowneed schools and non-EDS in high-need schools to the BOE on Oct. 27. The data showed EDS in low-need schools perform better than nonEDS in high-need schools.

“This illustrates the difficult challenge that the concentration of poverty, the concentration of need gives to schools and you can really feel it pulling achievement down,” Travers said.

Travers and CMS staff’s presentation questioned how the district should evaluate student need and how the need determines proper allocations to help schools achieve performance goals.

However, the high-need and highly ethnic students and schools continue to perform worse

than their whiter and wealthier counterparts.

Proficiency scores revealed an increasing gap between EDS, Hispanic and black students to their white peers.

CMS BOE members will have to determine the best way to provide students with equal educational opportunity for success, but not at the expense of other students.

James Johnson, the director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, urged the community to foster an environment of competitiveness among races in a special presentation on demographics on Oct. 27.

Johnson warned that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area will become “browner,” referring to an increase in Asian and Latin American immigration and more nonwhite populations reproducing, and “grayer,” referring to aging Baby Boomers who no longer are invested in K-12 education.

He said he finds in many counties throughout the nation the nonwhite children were in schools that were racially isolated or underrepresented in predominantly white schools. Johnson finds students of color “to be in-between a rock and a hard place at no fault of their own.”

Johnson said children in school face the challenge of being in a potentially unequal school because the area’s voting population isn’t representative of their ethnicity. Students also might face living in a racially segregated neighborhood that is unequal to predominantly white neighborhoods

and needs to overcome the effects of poverty their white neighbors might not experience.

Johnson stated that the current and next generations of students are not up against students of just counties around the state, but of the world. Many experts assert students who grow up in racially diverse schools are more likely to achieve their academic and occupational goals because they gain a greater range of experiences that better prepare them for the workforce.

But, some parents like Julie Cho, PTA President at Providence Spring Elementary School, expressed concerns before Election Day that she didn’t want her family and neighboring families leaving their home school.

Cho stated families had built the school community and wouldn’t want to lose the expectations and school environment they’ve invested in.

Newly elected at-large BOE member Dashew said the district needs to recognize the county’s triumphs and challenges.

“I think we have to acknowledge and remember that we have a lot of schools in our community that are successful and are thriving.

However, there are schools with concentrated poverty and the odds are stacked against them,” Dashew said. “We have got to address that the two things don’t cancel each other out. We need to bring to light that we can do both (as a board) – we can maintain and grow the success in successful school and at the same time address the challenges (in troubled schools).”

Take a trip around the world at South Mecklenburg High

South Charlotte residents won’t need their passports to travel to other countries next week when South Mecklenburg High School hosts its inaugural cultural fair.

The event is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria and mall area, and is open to the public.

“There is so much diversity at South Meck and we wanted the kids to get more involved in the school, especially our immi-

grant families that came to our school this year,” said Melissa Buczek, an English-as-asecond-language (ESL) instructor and event coordinator. “We want them to be a part of the school community and show the community who they are and to have a voice.”

The event will include free crafts for the community to create or collect and performances of Latin, hip-hop, African, Indian and Nepali solo and group dances.

Booths will represent different countries, which will reflect the student body.

This is Buczek’s first year at South Meck,

after working at Garinger High School, and she was surprised to see significant diversity among South Meck’s student body.

South Meck, which is a part world language magnet school, pulls students from Pineville, southwestern Charlotte and part of the Providence area.

“I think South Meck is unique,” Buczek said. “I don’t think the community realizes how diverse we are and (the student body is) growing more and more diverse.”

student body’s diverse culture and have embraced the school’s diversity. She expects the community to see a part of South Meck they might not have seen before.

“Students will show the hidden talents the school presents and what they can bring from their culture,” Buczek added.

All the performances and crafts are free to the community. Food trucks also will be on site selling different cultural foods.

Life has a purpose

“Chariots of Fire” is one of my favorite movies, not only because of the haunting music, but because the movie brilliantly weaves together three great interests of mine: athletics, Scotland and faith. The story revolves around two great athletes: Englishman Harold Abrams and Scotsman Eric Liddell.

In the movie, Abrams runs in the final of the 100 meters at the 1924 Olympics. He is a man of great drive, a man of great discipline and a man of great ability. He is addicted to running, and to winning.

An hour before the final he says, “I have 10 lonely seconds to justify my whole existence. I have known the fear of losing, but now I’m almost too frightened to win.” Abrams does win the final, but walks away in loneliness and emptiness. There is obviously something missing in his life. But how can someone feel so empty at the same moment as he is achieving his dream?

The Scotsman, Eric Liddell, is a man of deep faith.

He said, “God made me for a purpose, and God made me fast, and when I run I feel His pleasure.” Here is a man at peace with himself, but more importantly, at peace with God. In his heart, he knows the reason for his existence on earth. As a Scotsman, he would have learned the old Catechism: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” So fulfillment in life is not found in pleasing ourselves (that ultimately will lead to emptiness) but in pleasing God. That gives

purpose and meaning to life.

Do you have a purpose for living? Is your life meaningful or meaningless?

Richard Dawkins, an Oxford Professor of Science, believes that we are nothing but “jumped up apes.”

He thinks that there is no purpose to life, and to ask Pastor John H. Munro about the purpose of life is silly. But surely to ask what life is all about is a meaningful question which people throughout history have always been asking.

The Bible begins by saying that we are created in the image of God. God did not make us to live randomly or meaninglessly, but for a purpose. King David wrote: “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” (Psalm 139:17).

God made us for a purpose. Our search for meaning is realized in a personal relationship with the living God who created us and in love sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to forgive us and to guide us throughout life.

So how do you look on life? Surely, you are not the product of purposeless forces, like a piece of flotsam thrown up on the beach of time with no meaning. If you are created by a loving God, meaning is found in knowing, loving and obeying this great God.

The Charlotte Business Journal honored Allen in 2013, naming her as one of the Class of 40 Under 40. Allen also was named as one of the Mecklenburg Times 50 Most Influential Women.

Butler, Catholic looking for long playoff runs

It’s hard to believe we’re midway through November and for high school football fans, that means one thing – it’s playoff time.

The regular season has drawn to a close, and conference champions have been crowned. Butler (9-2, 5-1 Southwestern 4A) beat rival Independence 31-0 on Nov. 6 to secure the league while Charlotte Catholic once again ran rampant in the So. Meck 8, finishing 10-0 and 7-0 in the conference.

Now, the real fun starts as we embark on a journey to a state championship with the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association state playoffs beginning Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

In the 4AA west regional, No. 3-seeded Butler will host No. 14-seeded Providence (5-6, 4-3 So. Meck 8), No. 7-seeded South Meck (9-2, 5-2 So. Meck 8) entertains No. 10-seeded Ardrey Kell (6-5, 4-3 So. Meck 8), No. 8-seeded Independence (7-4, 5-1 Southwestern 4A) hosts No. 9-seeded Lake Norman (8-3, 5-2 North Piedmont 3A/4A), and No. 13-seeded Myers Park

Athletes Boys Athlete of the Week Bates Jones, Charlotte Latin Charlotte Latin junior quarterback Bates Jones led the Hawks to a comeback win over Christian in the first round of the NCISAA Division I state playoffs Nov. 6. Jones rushed for the game-winning one-yard touchdown with 57 seconds remaining in regulation and completed 12-19 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown.

Butler coach Brian Hales said he’s pleased with his team’s seeding, which gives the Bulldogs at least two home games, barring a first-round loss.

Providence has yet to remedy its poor quarterback play, which has severely limited its offense all season. That isn’t a recipe for success against an opportunistic Butler defense with its junkyarddog mentality.

The Panthers defense ranks among the best in the city, but it can’t afford to stay on the field the entire game. It will eventually give way to running back Benny LeMay and Butler’s bevy of talented weapons. Expect a big first-round win for the Bulldogs.

South Meck coach Rocky White is pleased with the Sabres’ success so far this season, after finishing a combined 13-22 the last three seasons. This is the most success South Meck has had in a long time, and it wants to keep the train going. We’ll see if they can handle a talented Ardrey Kell team.

The Sabres and Knights are all too familiar with one another. South Meck beat Ardrey Kell 51-24 in the regular season finale for both schools on Nov. 6, but can’t afford to look past dual-threat

quarterback Bryce Maginley and defensive end Julian Okwara (Notre Dame commit).

South Meck senior A.J. Elam has moved from H-back to quarterback to fill in for the injured Antonio Wallace. The offense sputtered at first with Elam under center, but has regained its footing and is in rhythm once again.

“We don’t spend a lot of time worrying about injuries,” White said. “That’s part of the game.

If Antonio is fortunate enough to make it back we’ll welcome him back with open arms, but A.J. has stepped up. That’s not a backup quarterback right there. That guy is as good as anybody around.”

No. 3-seeded Charlotte Catholic hosts No. 14-seeded Vance (6-5, 2-4 Mecka 4A) in the 4A west regional. This is a battle of the Cougars that Catholic won last season in a thrilling fashion, defeating Vance 35-34 to advance to the state championship game before it fell to New Bern.

“It’s a tough matchup,” Catholic coach Mike Brodowicz said. “They played some really good competition and were in every single game.

They’re a dangerous team. They’re extremely athletic. They’re physical. It’s going to be a good first round matchup, which I’m sure the state wanted to see.”

Q: What did it mean to beat Christian after struggling against them earlier this season?

A: It was gratifying after how hard we’ve been practicing, and it was a good reward for how we’ve picked it up since the start of conference play.

obviously my last state meet. It was kind of bittersweet that it was my last one, but I really didn’t have a great season overall start to finish. I did have very many good races in between. I really wanted to finish out as well as I could, and I think I did that.

Q: What did you enjoy most about being a part of Providence’s cross-country program?

A : Just the fact we have a really good team.

Our team is over 50 girls, so you’re going to meet so many people. Even when you walk through the hallways at school there’s always a girl on the team you recognize. It’s really so much fun, because we’re a big family. We all work as a unit, and we all work together. It’s nice to always try to do well together and try to win together as much as a team.
