Allen will work as a financial consultant for distribution and contracting companies. She also will provide outsourced controller services to companies in Margaret Allen Union County and surrounding areas, according to a news release.

Most recently, Allen was a controller for a Fortune 1,000 company in Charlotte. She has more than 30 years of financial and operational experience within a range of industries, the release said.

Jamba Juice recently expanded its presence in North Carolina, opening a new location at the Shops at Piper Glen.

The new store is located at 6432 Rea Road and offers “freshly-made juices, signature smoothies and better-for-you food options,� according to a news release.

Jamba franchise partner Harbor Management Company owns and operates the location, along with three additional Jamba stores in the Charlotte area, the release said. Kelvin and Jacqueline Ford are the principal owners of the franchise group. “Jamba Juice is a leader in healthy and active living, and that notion expands into partnering with the local communities that we serve in Charlotte,� Jacqueline Ford said in the release.

Scott’s Karat Patch opened its new store in the Park Selwyn shopping center on Nov. 11.

The store will serve as a “premier destination for fine jewelry focusing on customer service, value and trust in their collections of bridal jewelry, diamonds, silver, precious stones and more,� according to a news release.

Owner Scott Simon is known for the established Karat Patch Jewelry brand with his father, Lewis “Buddy� Simon. Karat Patch closed earlier this year due to Buddy Simon’s age and Scott Simon’s unexpected health issues, but the younger Simon is looking forward to a “fresh start,� the release said. He will follow in his father’s footsteps and run the store as “a local family business mainly based

on customer relationships and an extensive line of fine jewelry at fair prices,� read the release.

Truliant Credit Union supports Matthews Free Medical Clinic Truliant Federal Credit Union recently named the Matthews Free Medical Clinic as the winner of its Community Mini Grant fund.

The clinic received $1,000 from the grant program, which will help cover the costs of medical supplies the nonprofit uses to provide free primary and specialty care to low-income and uninsured clients, according to a news release.

Truliant’s Community Mini Grant program is now in its seventh year, and provided 24 community-based nonprofits with $22,000 in grant funding in 2015. Celebrate the season for gratitude with our annual Thanksgiving events guide

The leaves have changed colors and begun to fall, football is in a full-fledged frenzy and it’s almost time to celebrate one of the oldest American traditions: Thanksgiving.

We’ve compiled our annual South Charlotte Weekly guide to area Thanksgiving events to help our readers find a way to celebrate the holiday.

So, whether you’re craving a good meal, looking for a way to give back this season or hoping to reflect on your blessings during a quiet church service, check out this listing to find the event that’s right for you.

Community Thanksgiving worship service slated for Nov. 24 Five different denominations will gather next week at Sharon United Methodist Church for a unique ecumenical event known as the Park Sharon Community Thanksgiving Worship Service.

The service will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. at Sharon UMC, located at 4411 Sharon Road in SouthPark.

In addition to Sharon UMC, area congregations from St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, Sharon Presbyterian, Living Saviour Lutheran, Quail Hollow Presbyterian and Unity Fellowship churches will take part in the event. Dr. Mark Lawlor, of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic, will provide the message, and a combined choir of members from the different churches will lead music during the service.

The service is a 30-year tradition and is free to attend. An offering will be collected during the service, of which proceeds will benefit the Charlotte Rescue Mission Dove’s Nest – an organization that serves area women struggling with addiction.

Community Thanksgiving service to unite local churches Several area churches will join together for a community Thanksgiving service on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m., held at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church.

The service will unite congregations from Good Shepherd Presbyterian, Cross & Crown Lutheran, Peace Moravian, Candlewyck Baptist, Matthews-Murkland Presbyterian and Wesley United Methodist. Child care will be available during the service, and donations from an offering collected will benefit the Community Christmas Shoppe. Call 704847-5967 for more information.

Charlotte to host 40th annual interfaith Thanksgiving service Charlotte’s 40th annual interfaith Thanksgiving service will take place Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. at historic St. Paul Baptist Church.

People of all faiths and backgrounds are invited to “celebrate diversity and pray for peace in these troubled times,� read a news release. This year’s

theme, “Wilderness & Hope,� will focus on the significance of the number 40 in several religious traditions, while also commemorating the annual service’s 40th anniversary. Dr. S. Todd Yeary, senior pastor of Douglas Memorial Community Church in Baltimore, will provide the message.

A reception will follow the service at 8:15 p.m.

Villages of Robinson Farm to host annual Turkey Dash The Villages at Robinson Farm in Ballantyne will hold its third annual Turkey Dash on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26. The onemile fun run will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the four-mile run following at 9 a.m. The event will include a family fun center and bounce houses, cookies available from Chick-fil-A, free beer provided by Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and more.

MillBridge neighborhood to host annual Turkey Trot Nov. 26 The MillBridge community in downtown Waxhaw will host its annual Turkey Trot to benefit the Autism Society of North Carolina on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26.

Kids 10 years old and younger also can participate in a free Kids’ Turkey Dash prior to the Turkey Trot.

Race-day packet pickup and registration takes

place at 6:30 a.m., followed by the Kids’ Turkey Dash at 7:30 a.m. and the four-mile Turkey Trot at 8 a.m. An awards ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the overall top three male and female finishers.

Thanksgiving Day community outreach at Calvary Church Calvary Church will host its annual Thanksgiving Day outreach initiative on Thursday, Nov. 26, and volunteers are needed to help the event.

The initiative has been a Calvary Church tradition for more than 25 years and serves more than 100 families each year, according to the church’s website.

Volunteers can help by sharing the names of families in need who might need a Thanksgiving meal; bringing 10- to 12-pound cooked turkeys, unstuffed, to the church on Thanksgiving morning; bringing homemade, baked pies (not frozen, unbaked or refrigerator-style pies) to the church on Thanksgiving morning; or delivering dinner boxes to families, beginning at 1030 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Turkeys and pies should be dropped off in the church’s Crown Room between 6 and 9:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning.

Development Briefs Realty firm growing fast The Charlotte Business Journal has recognized Engel & Völkers South Charlotte as one of the city’s fastest growing companies, the realty firm announced Nov. 3.

The journal considered firms with headquarters in the 16-county region and at least $1 million in revenue last year. An accounting firm also reviewed tax returns for the previous three years.

Carolinas Metro Realty announced its partnership with the international luxury firm Engel & Völkers in September, becoming Engel & Völkers South Charlotte.

Yuriy Vaynshteyn, a 25-year Charlotte resident, owns the firm. Frances Bryant serves as broker-in-charge.

The brokerage is planning openings in SouthPark, Uptown and Lake Norman in the next 12 months.

What inspired you to support MakeA-Wish through your birthday?

The average cost of a wish is $6,000. Last year, I committed to raising enough funds to grant at least one wish. Trying to be creative and not just solicit donations, I decided to do something fun. The W.I.S.H. Society's annual fundraising period runs from September to December. Since my birthday is in October, I decided to have a party and in lieu of gifts ask for donations … I was able to raise enough to grant two wishes. It was then that I decided to make it my annual celebration; my birthday wish each year will be to grant a deserving kid's wish.

How would you encourage others to get involved in charity work?

Charitable involvement is not just donating money. Donation of your time and skills is equally important. I recently completed training to be a Wish Grantor. A Wish Grantor works with the Wish Child, their family and the organization to bring the wish to fruition. My passion is helping children. However, there are so many worthy causes that need various types of support. I would encourage people to identify their passion and contact a local or national organization that supports that passion to find out how they can become involved.

OMB’s Mecktoberfest wins at European competition

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (OMB) is the Founding Father of the craft beer scene in Charlotte.

It opened its doors in 2009 as the first brewery in the area. Fast-forward six years later and 17 breweries now call Charlotte home because of OMB, with another 20 in the works.

So when the brewery’s “Mecktoberfest” won gold at the 2015 European Beer Star competition in Germany last week, it seemed only fitting that its influence has reached international levels.

The global competition features more than 2,000 beers from across the world in 55 different categories. OMB was one of just two breweries from North Carolina to place in the competition, but even more impressive is that it became the first American brewery to win the Germanstyle Marzen category in five years.

Mecktoberfest, which is OMB’s take on a traditional Oktoberfest, is the brewery’s most popular seasonal. Unfortunately for beer aficionados wanting to try the gold medalist, Mecktoberfest is only available in September and October.

“Marzen is a style invented in Germany where the competition is held, so for us to win in that category is a big deal,” said marketing manager Jocelyn Ruark. “We’re a brewery heavily influenced by German styles so it’s really exciting. It’s a great confirmation as to what we’re doing.”

Olde Mecklenburg founder John Marrino, who was already in Germany at the time of the competition for a trade show, traveled to Nurem-

burg to receive the medal. The brewery held a celebration upon his return.

But winning isn’t new to the brewmasters at OMB. The brewery recently medaled at the Great American Beer Festival and has a following that’s led to an increase from 1,045 barrels produced in its first year to 14,500 barrels last year.

“It was definitely difficult when we first started, but at this point, I feel like people now trust and love their local breweries,” Ruark said. “You can go to any restaurant in town and find multiple local brews on tap. That’s been great to see. We’re becoming a pillar in the community, which is really important to us because we care about being in Charlotte for the long term.”

CATS is considering discontinuing Route 43 service on outbound Johnston Road, south of North Community House Road, as well as stops at Brixham Hill Avenue and Ballantyne Medical Place.

Changes considered for Ballantyne bus

Ned Curran, CEO of Ballantyne-based Bissell real estate company, will discuss the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce’s goals for 2016 during the organization’s 135th annual meeting.

Enjoy those foreign objects in your home

According to Amazon – you know, that jungle of a bookstore – there are precisely 71,069 books on parenting and parenting activities available for purchase.

Do you have any idea what this means? Good, I’ll tell you. It means that if one parenting book were written every week Jonathan McElvy all the way up to this very week of November 2015, the first book would have been penned in 648 A.D. And do you know what was happening in 648 A.D.? Good, me neither. I don’t even think they had spell-check back then.

For those of you new to my column, I like to step away from writing boring, non-controversial opinions once every few months and tell you stories about my now 2-year-old son Hank. Actually, what I really tell you are stories about my futile attempt to be a parent, only because my psychologist would have me believe I am not alone in this battle – you know, if I actually went to a psychologist. (There are 206,743 books on psychology and counseling available on Amazon, which probably means none of us

have any business raising children.)

So while all you young, inexperienced parents out there are wasting your vacation funds on self-help literature, I thought it might be nice if I threw a little free knowledge your way about the First Four Stages of Your Child’s Life – available on Amazon probably never.

Stage 1 happens when you arrive home from the hospital. It is the porcelain doll that is scrubbed with Q-tips, eats directly from mom and is wrapped in a piece of cloth that you wash with a detergent only available at stores that have parking spaces for electric cars. In other words, this is the delicate stage and fathers are usually relegated to observatory status.

A few months later, Stage 2 hits with a whimper. Mom still wraps the child in cellophane but, day by day, the child becomes more mobile in the sense that his body parts begin to move in electrocuted fashion.

For fathers, Stage 2 is much like Stage 1, mainly because your shiny, new son still can’t hit a 7-iron and you don’t know what to do with him otherwise. So you watch as the boy’s fingers begin to work, his legs start pushing across the floor, his crying decibels increase, solid foods are introduced and that precious, porcelain son of yours – in all his beauty – begins to fidget, feed and look you in the eyes to tell you he needs a new toy to chew. And so every time you walk through the grocery store, you buy a new toy, only to realize three months later

that you were shopping on the Pet aisle.

Stage 3 gets fun because two significant, though causal, things have happened. First, your child has learned to walk. Second, your home has been invaded by foreign objects.

While you might not think those two phenomena are related, you would be greatly mistaken. Ever wonder why the accounting firm of Mattel, Hasbro & Lego rakes in revenues of $14.8 BILLION every single year? It’s because children learn how to walk. And when children learn how to walk, parents like Meghan and myself fear that our son will sneak out of the doggy door one night with a note that said he took the train to Hershey, Pennsylvannia, because he grew bored at our house. So decent, hard-working parents buy toys.

Lots of them.

And that gets us to Stage 4, where we currently reside with our son, Hank, where irony proves to be the greatest comedian of all.

First, about that home of yours. Remember how you bought all those toys that squeaked and the bouncers that kept your son occupied while you watched movies and mom did her eyelashes? Well, one day very soon, mom will realize you have a home full of absolute junk and, fathers, it will be your job to dig a hole in your attic in order to store the guitar shaped like a dog that howls in the key of F. Despite everything you have heard, Stage 4 of a child’s life actually begins with a tidal wave of cleaning because if you don’t get rid of some of these aliens in your home,

your now 2-year-old will violently heave them into the new TV mom bought for the study.

The cleaning isn’t fun; having a son who repeats your every word and action and facial expression is about as good as it gets.

For precisely three scientific (though somewhat fictional) stages of your child’s life, fathers like me scratch our heads wondering why we’ve gained a few extra pounds, why we can’t get our boy to properly throw a slider. And then, out of absolutely nowhere, that little fidget of a kid turns into your buddy.

Remember those first two stages of atrophy? Oh that debilitation is long gone because if I don’t chase my son around now and tackle him onto the pillows and throw him in the air as he mixes his precious laughs with the words, “Faster! Faster!” then I’ll never get that chance again.

If I don’t show him that mixing ketchup and mustard makes a hot dog even better – if I don’t let him grab a handful of ketchup and smother it on his shirt before mom gets home – I might never get that chance again.

For more than a year, my wife has giggled at a little joke we have around our house. She likes to tell me that “40 hit you hard.” She’s right, because after throwing Hank in the air seven times – “Faster!

Faster!” – pieces of me start to ache a little more than they once did.

But who really cares? I can’t wait for Stage 5, and I sure don’t want a book to give away the surprise.

We got bowties for Thanksgiving

I’m like Ralphie in the famous Christmas movie, “A Christmas Story.” He kept asking for a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas.

Everyone said to him, “You’ll shoot Rev. Tony Marciano your right eye out.” I didn’t want a Red Ryder BB gun, but there is something I’ve wanted for years. At every holiday meal at the Rescue Mission, I kept telling people over and over what I wanted. It was a simple thing, but something I wouldn’t spend Mission money on. It would have to be donated to us. They’d look at me and say, “That’s a nice idea,” but I really think they thought I was crazy.

I wanted bowties. I wanted someone to donate little black bowties for our volunteers to wear on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. I wanted to make our holiday meals even more special for people coming to the Rescue Mission. While we require our volunteers to wear white shirts

and black pants, there was one thing missing if we were to make the Rescue Mission feel like an elegant dining experience. We needed black bowties.

For the past five years, every holiday I told our volunteers about my idea.

They’d smile, thinking it was a little over the top and walk away. But last Easter, something special happened.

I was talking to a couple and shared my idea. Something stirred within them.

A few months later, a box appeared at my office door. I opened it, not knowing its contents. If my name was Ralphie, I would have squealed with delight had it been a Red Ryder BB gun. Instead, it was something better – it was 100 black tuxedo bowties.

It’s been said that God answers prayers three ways: yes, no and wait. While “no” is hard, I think “wait” is harder. When you are in the “wait” mode, the vision God has laid on your heart remains.

You can see what He wants you to do.

You can see it as if it is already occurring right in front of you. Yet, you are still waiting, still hoping, still believing this will become a reality.

Sometimes in “wait,” we throw down the towel and we give up too quickly.

Our friends walk away seeing us as an idealist, a dreamer, or someone without either of our feet firmly planted on the

ground. They want to celebrate when it becomes a reality, yet they don’t want to be seen with us when all it appears to be is “just a dream.”

On Nov. 26, 2015, I will be doing the “happy dance.” I will be like Ralphie holding my very own Red Ryder BB gun. I will greet all the volunteers who came to the Charlotte Rescue Mission to serve our community guests with excitement. They will arrive in white shirts with button-down collars and black pants. I will not be able to contain myself. I will pull out the box of black bowties and tell them the story of God’s faithfulness. We will help each other get these ties positioned just right. Later that day when our community guests are about to enter our dining room, they will first be asked, “How many are in your party?”

Then they will enter our dining room and be greeted by a sea of volunteers wearing white shirts and black bowties.

Why do we do this?

Everything we do is designed to make the love of God so real that each community guest will be able to touch it. I want them to know that not only do we love them, God also loves them. This feast, including black bowties, is His way of telling them.

Experts say diverse schools will better prepare students for their academic and occupational goals and can be achieved in raceneutral ways – perspectives that might be relevant as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education trucks along toward student assignment plans.

Mecklenburg County’s demographics have changed over the years with the white population not growing as significantly as Hispanic, black and Asian populations.

Children are sent to neighborhood schools that reflect their neighborhoods, leading to racially isolated schools. Many say this calls for a change, including CMS Board of Education (BOE) members who push for greater diversity amongst schools.

“Diversity really does matter and I’m hopeful we will make this work,” said Tom Tate, BOE member and CMS Public Policy Committee Chair.

Remembering the past to change the future Roslyn Mickelson, a sociology professor at UNC Charlotte, who has researched school desegregation and resegregation in Charlotte, and Tate, said the public might be unaware of Charlotte’s desegregation history and its effects on the community.

“People don’t know what the history was and the gains that came from mandatory busing (in the 1970s),” Tate said.

Mickelson said the community needs to face “second-generation segregation,” and begin to see the negative effects racially isolated schools can have on all children – not just those who are economically disadvantaged.

The professor explained children learning in racially isolated classrooms aren’t exposed to new and different experiences and ways of looking at the world.

Diverse classrooms diminish racial fear and increase exposure to various lifestyles and perspectives because students come from different races and social classes, providing students the “toolkit to seeing the world,” she said. Diversity stimulates cognitive processes to explore new experiences rather than an automaticity that comes in a racially isolated environment, Mickelson added.

Mickelson said students that learn in a racially isolated environment have a limited range of experience because they don’t have exposure to other lifestyles.

“The point is diversity isn’t a one-way ex-

change. When done correctly, it’s a two-way exchange,” she said.

Proving diverse schools lead to success for all students Matt Ellenwood, a policy analyst with the North Carolina Justice Center’s Education and Law Project, said the district would need to carefully select a method of reintegration through federal guidelines.

Ellenwood said the U.S. Supreme Court has accepted research that racially diverse schools benefit students through eliminating biases and prejudices and boosting achievement, but school districts must provide proof that diversity is necessary for its academic success.

“There needs to be findings and facts in your school district about why diversity is going to be important to your schools,” he said.

Ellenwood encouraged the district to try race-neutral methods of integration, as race is considered a “suspect class” in which discrimination can become an issue. He suggested using socioeconomic status as a proxy for racial diversity. Ellenwood added the school district could address racially isolated schools without impeding federal guidelines through methods, such as: placing a new school in a low-performing area; realigning feeder patterns so racially-isolated elementary schools feed into diverse middle schools; redrawing attendance zones; or increasing open enrollment to magnet schools.

Taking steps toward diversity CMS accommodates approximately 148,000 students, with 22,000 in magnet programs, which means CMS will specifically determine where families attend school.

“It’s so important that we get this correct,” Tate said. “The vast majority of families we tell them where they attend and we have to make sure that they’re getting a good education.”

Tate said many parents don’t know their school options, such as magnet programs, or requests to attend another neighboring school.

The policy committee determines the district’s guiding principles for student reassignment and Tate said he’s always looking for feedback from the community.

“What we are looking at is how we can change and become the district we want to be – to have the best education available to all of our students,” he said. “… What we want to make sure happens is we get to a place where we can educate every student in every school.”

Charlotte Latin continues tradition to honor veterans

Providence Day welcomes Mandela’s former prison guard

Charlotte Latin School continued a tradition that’s lasted more than a decade last week through honoring veterans in an assembly on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

C.W. Stacks, a Charlotte Latin science teacher, initiated the tradition about 15 years ago, inviting servicemen, who were currently serving in or retired from all U.S. military branches, to be recognized by the school community.

The school invites alumni, parents, faculty and grandparents who are active and retired to enjoy breakfast and hear a message from a speaker.

“I think we have a great appreciation for our country, for our veterans,” Stacks said. “I have heard from both faculty and students they are so glad that we have this assembly (every year) and feel so good about recognizing those who deserve our recognition and respect.”

Army Col. Alvin Cantrell served as this year’s speaker, who expressed the importance of recognizing veterans.

“It’s so important to recognize veterans on Veterans Day because it celebrates the living, while Memorial Day recognizes the memory of those who have died in service,” Cantrell said.

Cantrell has a 30-year military career and fought in the Vietnam War, where he was shot down twice. He discussed his career and his time working with computers under Adm. Grace Hopper, who coined many computer science terms.

“Five words can be so meaningful to a veterans: ‘Thank you for your service,’” he told students. “Whenever you see a veteran somewhere like an airport, thank them.”

School staff expects the school to continue its tradition each Veterans Day, and Stacks encouraged students to honor veterans throughout the year.

“I’m glad to be a part of a school that values the commitment and the service (of the armed forces) and the fact they do it for our country makes it all the more special,” Stacks said. “We’re proud of our country and the freedoms that we have.

We have a great appreciation for those who make all of this possible … it’s not just the soldiers who deserve our thanks and appreciation, but it’s also their families because they make sacrifices too. It’s nice that we can acknowledge that and recognize that.”

South African Christo Brand grew up on a farm not understanding the civil unrest between black and white people in the 1960s throughout the nation, but eventually faced the issue head on when he became the prison guard of Nelson Mandela, a civil rights leader, on Robben Island.

Despite taking on the roles of the oppressor and the oppressed, Brand and Mandela formed a friendship that lasted until Mandela’s death.

Providence Day School (PDS) invited Brand to speak to the school and the greater Charlotte community on Nov. 9 and 10 as part of a Global Speaker Series.

Brand discussed the importance of tolerance and how education can lift people beyond their circumstances, as well as the foundation for his book, “Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend.”

“Mandela said, ‘Almost everybody has a story.’ I didn’t want to write a book in the beginning and he wanted me to have a book,” Brand said. “When the book was out, he said, ‘You must tell the people about the cultural problems and the isolation that is in South Africa,’ but at the same time, I must talk about how important education was for them in prison – how important education is for the world, not just South Africa.”

Brand was an 18-year-old guard faced with securing the nation’s most “dangerous terrorists,” with Mandela as their leader. The two could have been enemies, but shared a respect for one another through kind deeds. They saw each other as humans – not prisoner and

guard. Brand shared about Mandela’s wife, Winnie, visiting the prisoner, as well as how Mandela suffered being away from his family, while grandchildren were born and close family members passed away.

Brand’s visit was not the first time Providence Day has connected with the prison guard.

Students travel to South Africa each year as part of the school’s global education program.

They met Brand while they were there and invited him to speak at PDS as part of its global series.

“It’s my belief that every student ought to have global knowledge skills and good character dispositions, so we try to find speakers of different kinds,” Dr. Loren Fauchier, PDS director of global education, said.

Fauchier said he’s humbled by the friendship Mandela and Brand formed when they were in opposing roles.

“I wish that every American could learn from (their friendship) and learn how important it is to reconcile … and learn how to trust each other and put things aside and that’s what they did,” Fauchier added.

The director believes Brand and Mandela’s friendship serves as a metaphor for how the world should behave – with forgiveness and acceptance.

“No matter how much we try to teach kids about global education, about the knowledge of the world. It really boils down to really character,” Fauchier said. “How you walk out on the street and you’re with other people, and how ultimately do you act, which to me is just as important as how much you know about the world.”

Gilmartin leaves lasting legacy at Charlotte Christian

Ryan Gilmartin is a special player. Not many guys play varsity football four years, especially at Charlotte Christian. But the University of Connecticut-bound linebacker was an anomaly.

Charlotte Christian coach Jason Estep and his staff knew Gilmartin would make a positive impact on the program after a stellar eighth grade season with the Knights’ middle school team.

His theory soon became fact.

Gilmartin said his high school football experience was everything he could ask for, minus the disappointing end to his senior season, where the Knights (7-4, 3-0 CISAA) fell to Charlotte Latin, 14-7, in the semifinals of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state playoffs Nov. 6.

But his stats carry their own weight. Gilmartin finished his high school career with 388 tackles, 40 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 27 quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries,

11 passes defended, four conference championships, three state championships and an overall 38-8 (12-0) record.

“This has been an outstanding career,” Estep said. “I told him last week, ‘I don’t know if this will ever get repeated again, the success we’ve had in four years from one player and as a group.’”

It’s difficult for Estep to single out one game, because Gilmartin had so many strong performances. However, the biggest thing he took away from coaching Gilmartin was the emotion he played with.

“He was the emotional leader and really he was the emotional leader for four years,” Estep said. “We didn’t have a lot of guys that wore it out there like he did. Ryan was a guy that literally after every play had that emotion out there.

“Our guys fed off that. He became not only a leader, but the emotional leader on this football team. When we needed a play I think they looked for him to make that play defensively. When the tempo was not good he had to set the tempo.”

Estep told Gilmartin at the end of his sophomore season – after Charlotte Christian won

their second straight state title on their way to a 12-0 record – that it was his team now.

“I never thought I could do this stuff, be the guy people look up to, because it wasn’t ever me originally,” Gilmartin said. “Kind of realizing through football, not only building my confidence, but building the trait of leadership, it was a big step forward that night. That moment really resonated with me for the rest of my career.”

That passing of the torch unleashed Gilmartin, who played every linebacker position at Charlotte Christian before making his final stop at Mike backer as a senior. It gave him the freedom he needed to excel not only as a leader and develop those qualities necessary to be a positive catalyst, but it also helped him to raise his game to another level.

Gilmartin laid his heart on the line and left everything on the field. He held nothing back when he set foot on the gridiron. He leaves a significant void at Charlotte Christian, but also a high standard for current and future Knights to work toward and play at. His legacy will go on for years to come.

Providence Day, Butler enter basketball season with high expectations

Boys basketball in Charlotte and the surrounding area might not be in its hay day, but it’s teeming with rich talent. Unfortunately for the rest of the city and possibly the state, a major portion of it resides under Brian Field’s guidance at Providence Day. The Chargers have five Division I-caliber players in its starting lineup – senior forwards Grant Williams (Tennessee signee), Joshua Howard, Isaac Johnson and sophomore guards Devon Dotson and Trey Wertz.

Howard is hopeful Providence Day can achieve something more than reaching the semifinals of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state playoffs.

“I definitely think we can do greater than we did last year, because I think every year I’ve been here we get better and better and make it farther

and farther,” Howard said.

Howard admitted he and his teammates feel some pressure to stay unbeaten in Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association play, because they are getting the best shots from its league opponents.

Johnson said chemistry is one of the Chargers strengths, which helps them operate in sync on the court.

“We’re more of a family,” Johnson said. “That’s what a good team should have as a quality. That’s one of our main strengths. We communicate.

“We have a feel for how each other plays, which works and what doesn’t,” Howard added.

“I think we’re going to jell well.”

The addition of Dotson, a transfer from Providence, might be what gets the Chargers over the hump. His ability to score and push the ball pressures opponents on the defensive end, will alleviate pressure from Williams, Howard and Johnson in the post, and create scoring opportunities for Wertz and himself.

He makes Providence Day a complete team, especially after it lost point guard Chaz Raye to graduation.

While Providence Day clearly has the most talent of any team in the area, the player with arguably the most potential hails from Queens Grant in senior big man Patrick Tapé.

He’s a triple-double waiting to happen, and if he can stay healthy, the Stallions might be able to ride him to a Yadkin Valley Conference championship and a deep run in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A state playoffs.

“I think the guys on the team are willing to sacrifice and share the ball,” Tapé said. “We don’t have selfish players. We play as one cohesive unit.”

Tapé added he needs to protect the rim, score when he has opportunities and provide leadership. He won’t just play down low this season, but will step out to the perimeter to knock down shots. Tapé can even put the ball on the floor and attack the rim from the perimeter, which might

Butler senior shooting guard RaeQuan Scott has a one-track mind with a state championship as its destination. That’s what he and his teammates are setting out to achieve after falling short in the third round of the N.C. HSAA 4A state playoffs last season.

“Everything we do has to be almost professional,” Scott said. “Everything has to be like a state championship team on and off the court.”

Coach Myron Lowery’s second year at the helm guiding Butler promises to be an exciting one, and the Bulldogs appear to have moved from a pretender into a contender.

No one can tell how the ball will bounce this winter, but the hoops circuit in south Charlotte and beyond could be just as riveting as last year.

The 2015-16 season will have its own outstanding players, Cinderella stories and surprise teams, so stay tuned as we take a stroll down the hardwood for the next five months.
