Looking for a way to entertain the kids during their time home from school? Get crafty with Bryant’s “red-nosed reindeer” project perfect for the holidays.

This little red-nosed reindeer spreads holiday cheer wherever he goes. Scrounge up some odds and ends from around the house and a handful of “sparkly stuff” from your holiday stash and get creative.

You’ll need • Aluminum foil • Strips of newspaper • Bendable but firm wire (18 gauge) • Masking tape • Flour • Water • Mixing bowl • Wisk • Brown watercolor, furniture or shoe polish and small piece of paper towel • Wire for antlers • Wine cork for head • Sticks for legs • Mini clothes pins for hooves • Small piece of wood or cardboard for the base • Small piece of fabric, felt, or paper for the ears • Sparkly holiday do-dads to decorate the antlers (jingle bells, miniature garland, sequins, etc.)

• Small red pom pom or bead

How to do it • Mold the aluminum foil into the shape for the body, tapering it for the head. Aim for the size of a baked potato.

• Press the cork into the foil to make an indentation where the head is going to go.

• Lay three or four lengths of wire across the top of the head and bend into the indentation for the head. Secure with masking tape.

• Wisk flour and warm water to make the papier mache paste. Keep adding flour and/ or water until the paste reaches the consistency of pudding – not too drippy.

• Tear the newspaper into small strips, dip them into the papier mache paste and cover the body (including the masking tape) with one or two layers. Since the form is a solid piece of aluminum foil, there’s no need for more than one or two layers – you’re just trying to get good coverage so you can’t see the foil. Rub your finger along the indentation where the cork for the head is going to go. Let dry overnight.

• After the papier mache is dry, gently rub the body with a little brown watercolor, furniture or shoe polish. Get creative here!

• Cut small ovals out of felt, fabric, or paper for the ears and hot glue them to the sides of the wine cork. Glue little buttons or beads on for the eyes if you prefer.

• Glue the red pom pom or bead on his nose.

• Twist the wire with your fingers.

• Using a hot glue gun (adults only!), assemble the body on the wooden or cardboard base, and glue the arms on in whatever position you prefer.

• Decorate the antlers with whatever little sparkly holiday goodies you like!

City staff received 134 rezoning petitions in 2015, with leaders deciding on at least a dozen directly affecting the south Charlotte area.

A few of those projects will be significant for the region, resulting in new shops, restaurants and homes.

As the city council swears in its newest members Monday, Dec. 7, we’re taking a look at some of the biggest rezoning projects approved this year that could potentially shape the local economy.

Golf Links earns mulligan

Location: 194 acres on north side of Ardrey Kell Road near Providence Road.

Approved: April 20 Summary: The site used to be known as Rea Farms and later the Charlotte Golf Links site. Developers sought the community’s input about what to do with it. Most neighbors favored a mixed-use development instead of a subdivision, so Lincoln Harris LLC requested up to 954,000 square feet of office and retail space with four drive-thru windows; 265,000 square feet of institutional uses, 250,000 square feet of recreational uses and 1,000 residential units, 300 of which are age-restricted.

Farm to fork

Location: 38.3 acres on the east side of Providence Road, between Interstate 485 and Providence Road.

Approved: Oct. 19 Summary: Developers cooked up Crescent Providence Farm as a destination for “foodies� with enhanced kitchens in housing units and family dinners with executive chefs at nearby restaurants. The site will be part of a larger activity center shared with redevelopment at the old Matthews and Rea family farms, as well as an enhanced street grid along a congested Providence Road corridor. Crescent Communities won approval for up to 30,000 square feet of commercial space, 425 multi-family dwellings and a hotel with up to 180 rooms.

Saved trip to SouthPark

Location: 10.8 acres on northwest corner at Providence, Fairview and Sardis roads.

Approved: Oct. 19 Summary: Developers pitched the idea of

giving nearby residents retail options without having to trek to SouthPark or Cotswold.

The project opens up the street network a bit at Providence Road. Mallard Creek Associates No. 1 will redevelop residential and retail sites into up to 95,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, entertainment, office and personal service space, as well as up to 195 residential dwellings.

Viva Chicken and more

Location: 0.37 acres on southwest corner of Montford Drive and Park Road.

Approved: July 20 Summary: Lat Purser & Associates requested rezoning office space to allow for up to 4,700 square feet of retail uses. City staff told councilmembers there could be two or three uses at the site, including a restaurant and maybe retail. “The Charlotte Business Journal� reported in October that Viva Chicken had plans to open its fourth location there. Can’t wait for the Peruvian restaurant to open? Try the one at 12206 Copper Way in Ballantyne.

Two-story Starbucks

Location: 0.55 acres on the east of Sharon Road between Ashley Park and Louisburg Square lanes.

Approved: Nov. 16 Summary: This rezoning opened the door for a two-story Starbucks in the Sharon Square shopping center. Tate Pappas SC Investors LLC was granted permission to allow a drive-thru window on the site. The coffee shop will likely attract those staying at the Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites Charlotte SouthPark under construction across the street.

Touchstone goes office

Location: Â 10.24 acres on northwest corner of Bevington Place and Carswell Lane.

Approved: March 16 Summary: Walter Fields, who owns a land development firm on South Boulevard, told city leaders that the Touchstone community was originally envisioned as a neighborhood close to shopping and an elementary school.

But the retail portion never quite lived up to its promise. Jim Sankey sought to move his corporate assets, including Invue Security, to the property where he’d build a threestory, 89,000-square-foot office building at the site of an old Food Lion.

Business Briefs Charlotte professional WilliamsKnight named to POZ 100 list Jeffrey Williams-Knight, of the Mecklenburg County Health Department, was recently named one of POZ magazine’s sixth annual “POZ 100.” The magazine is an award-winning print and online publication for people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. Williams-Knight, 52, is the supervisor of Mecklenburg County’s HIV/STD Community Testing and Outreach Program, and also serves as a board chair of the North Carolina AIDS Action Network. He specializes in public education, HIV/STI testing, community building and policy advocacy, according to the POZ 100 online listing.

This year, POZ asked individuals and organizations across the U.S. to nominate people living with HIV since 1995 or earlier, and who still remain “active in the fight to end the epidemic,” according to a news release.

All of this year’s honorees have been living with HIV since before effective treatment was available, and many contracted the Jeffrey Williams-Knight virus before the first HIV test became accessible in 1985, the release said.

“This year’s POZ 100 is a testament to those

who are not only surviving but also thriving while living with HIV and who are actively fighting the epidemic,” Oriol Gutierrez, POZ editor in chief, said in the release. “… Although most contracted the virus while adults, some became HIV positive as teenagers, and a few were born with HIV.” Other 2015 POZ 100 honorees include: Grammy-nominated jazz musician Fred Hersch; 1980s pop singer Sherri Lewis; artist Hunter Reynolds; HIV researcher Perry Halkitis; and documentarian Grissel Granados and her activist mother, Silvia Valerio.

Truliant gives back to nonprofits Truliant Federal Credit Union recently awarded 24 Community Mini Grants to nonprofits in North Carolina, south Carolina and Virginia – including five nonprofits in the Charlotte area.

The Community Mini Grants program provided $22,000 total in funding this year, and has contributed more than $200,000 in funding to nonprofits since its inception seven years ago, according to a news release.

Truliant chose 38 proposals as semifinalists from approximately 180 applications, and “fans” selected the winning 24 through an online voting process.

Charlotte-area winners include: Communities in Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County; Hospitality House of Charlotte; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Charlotte; the Matthews Free Medical Clinic; and Junior Achievement of Central Carolinas.

The donation will provide funding to assist in the transportation needs of the food banks, according to a news release. Food banks are in need of refrigerated trucks to transport perishable items donated by food retailers.

Ballantyne Breakfast Club to meet Dec. 5, discuss public safety The Ballantyne Breakfast Club will hold its next meeting Saturday, Dec. 5, at 9 a.m. in the Fairway Ballroom of the Ballantyne Hotel and Lodge.

Road Wars: Leaders to fight for CRTPO control

Elected leaders in Lake Norman are so desperate to stop the Interstate 77 Express Lanes project, they are willing to wreck relationships with Charlotte and its neighboring towns.

State legislators Jeff Tarte and Charles Jeter recently Justin Vick headlined a summit about the publicly panned project, which involves adding lanes from uptown Charlotte to Mooresville that commuters pay to drive on.

Perhaps fueled by the incoming election year, Jeter told those attending the summit that he plans to submit legislation that would weaken Charlotte’s vote on the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO). After all, the CRTPO approved a long-range plan that included the I-77 Express Lanes project.

What Jeter is proposing is like using a spoon to comb your hair. At least use a fork!

Right idea, wrong solution

Jeter is targeting the CRTPO for good reason.

Nick Tennyson, state transportation director, is-

sued a statement on behalf of the governor’s office that the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) would be willing to work with Lake Norman leaders if the CRTPO voted to cancel the project.

The CRTPO consists of representatives from 21 cities and towns in Mecklenburg, Union and Iredell counties, with votes weighted by population. Charlotte has 31 votes, while the larger towns such as Matthews and Indian Trail each have two votes. Smaller towns, such as Pineville and Mint Hill, each have one vote.

Would Charlotte having fewer votes make a difference?

No, considering projects are prioritized by a formula and vetted by a less-publicized technical committee comprised of planners or administrators from each town.

The I-77 Express Lanes project was included in a long-range plan. The CRTPO approved the plan not because of Charlotte’s voting block. The plan was framed as an all-or-nothing vote.

Members were told they had to vote “yes or no” for the entire plan. They were not allowed to change the project list.

Had the CRTPO rejected the plan, dozens of road projects would have been delayed throughout Mecklenburg, Union and Iredell counties and possibly other transportation divisions.

In this context, Charlotte took the best course of action for the region.

Had the CRTPO been allowed to remove the I-77 project from the plan, I believe its members,

including Charlotte, would have done so.

What’s next?

The best thing Jeter and Tarte can do is encourage the CRTPO to seek the flexibility to pull out individual projects from long-range plans if they hurt multiple counties or towns.

You don’t want Charlotte vetoing a Matthews project due to politics and vice versa, but the CRTPO ought to line-item veto a project that adversely affects multiple counties or towns.

A line-item veto also would prevent latebreaking developments that turn a project sour.

In I-77’s case, the NCDOT negotiated with the developer.

The NCDOT maintains managed lanes have a longer lifespan than general-purpose lanes.

And a public-private partnership was the fastest way to get relief for I-77 (Express Lanes projects planned for I-485 and U.S. 74 won’t be funded this way).

Lake Norman leaders accepted this because they were sold the same all-or-nothing scenario.

They were told I-77 wouldn’t get extra lanes for many years without tolls. So they supported the project.

As details of the public-private partnership began to emerge, however, a growing number of people became concerned that the contract wouldn’t allow for future improvements to I-77.

The NCDOT should better address those concerns. If the population grows to a point when commuters can no longer drive 45 to 50

miles per hour in Express Lanes, then it’s time to add capacity to I-77.

Lake Norman residents have convinced their leaders to cancel the project. Leaders must now sell the rest of the region on why it’s in our best interests to cancel the project.

How much will it cost to break the contract since construction on the I-77 project has already started? How are we going to pay for it? These questions have to be addressed.

Once the dust settles, elected leaders in all three counties need to stop jockeying for position and start working together to get more transportation and infrastructure issues framed in a way that benefits the region.

Moving students, moving targets

South Charlotte parents fear student reassignment South Charlotte Weekly will investigate student reassignment and what it could mean for Charlotte through its series “Moving students, moving targets.”

South Charlotte parent Joel Rutledge worries he will experience déjà vu in the coming year, as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education determines new student assignment guidelines.

Rutledge has a preschooler, a child at Providence Spring Elementary (PSE) School and two middle schoolers at charter school Socrates Academy. His family moved from Wake County a few years ago, where he experienced the aftermath of excessive redistricting in the past few years. He said it’s “the heart of Raleigh’s problems.”

The Rutledge family lived in a 20-home neighborhood in Wake County, but the subdivision had been reassigned so frequently that none of the neighborhood children attended the same school. Two other Wake County elementary schools were located between their neighborhood and the school the Rutledges were assigned to. The family wanted a “neighborhood school” community, but the lack of proximity to their home made it nearly impossible.

“You never could develop that sense of community with your neighbors,” he said. “We had our kids in private school because of what was the direct results of non-neighborhood schools.”

When they moved to the Charlotte area a few years ago, one of the family’s primary goals was to find a neighborhood school to plug in to and become involved.

“We loved PSE from the word ‘go,’” he said. “… One reason we loved that school because of the sense of community they provide and that was evident in our house search and talking with our potential neighbors. That was something we didn’t have.”

Three of Rutledge’s children attended or currently attend PSE because of the community experience. He later chose to enroll his two oldest children at Socrates, which resides on the border of Union County, Matthews and south Char-

lotte, to continue that sense of community.

But now, Rutledge could experience his Wake County nightmare all over again if PSE students are reassigned.

“That’s what concerns me – for CMS to look like Wake County,” he said. “I think that’s a model of what not to emulate.”

Rutledge isn’t alone

Other parents share Rutledges’ fear of losing his neighborhood school.

Lisa O’Donnell, a south Charlotte mother with kids at PSE, Crestdale Middle School and Providence High School, worries her daughter’s 10-minute commute to PSE will become a 50minute commute if reassigned. This could prevent her from participating in after-school activities and sports because of the drive time.

“I don’t think moving my child to another school will make that school better,” she added. “It just means my child will have a longer bus ride.”

Anupam Bose, who has a second- and fourthgrader at PSE, is actively involved in her school’s PTA. If her kids are relocated, however, her involvement might be limited because of distance.

“If I have to drive a half hour away, I don’t know if I’ll be able to,” she said.

Karin Simoneau, parent of PSE first- and third-graders, worries student reassignment might worsen overcrowding at the school. If additional students are enrolled at PSE, current students would have to attend school elsewhere to make room.

“A lot of people move here from other areas.

When we moved here a few years ago, we honed in on this area because of the school district,” Simoneau said. “I think a lot of people did the same thing. We chose to live here because of the school, but to have our children bounced to anther school would be heartbreaking.”

Bose recently moved into a new home, but made sure her children still were zoned for PSE because of its academic reputation.

“I just bought a brand new home and I could have my children go to a different school than I had chosen,” she said. “I chose to be here and I chose where I was going to live.”

Bose added if her children are forced to move schools, her family might consider alternative options outside the district, such as charter or private schools.

Searching for the right solution

South Charlotte parents recognize the district’s concern to help all CMS children succeed and to increase diversity, but they aren’t sure placing students in different schools is the answer.

Rutledge said he has concerns that placing students from low-performing schools into a high-performing school won’t help the individual student, and the child will become lost in the average.

“Spreading children out and then calling the school successful – are those students being reached?” he said, adding struggling students’ needs won’t be met at a high-performing schools, because they’ll be deemed “successful” due to the school’s average performance rate.

Simoneau attended a meeting with Scott McCully, CMS executive director of student placement, who spoke to PSE’s student leadership team. She’s confident the board is aware of their concerns.

“We basically said we often feel that it’s the urban area that’s getting all the attention and the school board had kind of forgotten about us,” she said, but now has a “gut feeling” that the board will try to “make us happy.”

Bose said she’s attended community forums and believes no parent wants their child to attend a different school with longer bus rides, regardless of which neighborhood they live in.

“I don’t think those are options that any parents wants regardless of if their child is in a failing school or not,” Bose said.

She believes extending magnet programs – potentially adding one in south Charlotte – would give students options to explore their best academic option.

McCully: ‘We’re still discussing’

Scott McCully has met with a few south Charlotte groups in the past couple of months to explain the process of student reassignment, and what has led to the policy committee’s current status in reevaluating assignment guidelines.

McCully said the board re-evaluates the guidelines every six years and, this year, the policy committee chose to take a “more thorough look” at the comprehensive plan and its effects on student assignment.

He said the board has examined a wide range of topics, as well as begun to prioritize the wants and needs of the district.

McCully said the board has chosen to take a longer discussion time, which began in February.

They’ve discussed principles more broadly rather than specifics, he added, but the board plans to address concerns about schools with high concentrations of poverty, while still acknowledging the concerns of parents who love their schools.

He expects the board to “move a little quicker” in 2016, with the target deadline for a decision in late winter or early spring. After the guidelines are established, within legal restrictions, McCully and his department will determine its effects on student assignment.

“We want to get the policy changes squared away to work on student assignment,” he said.

The policy committee will meet next on Dec. 10, a Thursday, at 10:30 a.m. at the Government Center, Room 528. The meeting is open to the public and is recorded.

Q&A with Country Day’s China Exchange teacher Liping Liu

What has been the biggest surprise about staying in America?

America is a great country that has so much to offer – landscape, technology, culture, etc.

Looking back on my three-month stay here, the biggest surprise is meeting people from diversified cultural backgrounds … It is always a pleasure to communicate with them, learning about their origins and stories, so eye-broadening and thought-provoking. It makes me a more tolerant and well-rounded person.

What are the differences between American and Chinese schools?

Among the many differences between American and Chinese schools, the most distinguished one is the different education values. American schools put students’ personal development as the priority, encouraging them to be themselves, while Chinese schools emphasize students’ hard work, expecting them to be successful in society. Apart from that, the teaching approaches are also different. American schools are more student-centered, while Chinese are more teacher-centered.

What do you hope to gain from the exchange experience?

As a high school English teacher in China, I hope to bring back the essence of American culture to my students – respect diversity.

Leaning a language is more than language skills. More important is the crosscultural awareness, which can never be fully learned from textbooks … the exchange experience in all divisions Liping Liu in Country Day has helped me to get a whole picture of American fundamental education.

What challenges do you see in American schools that you don’t see in Chinese schools?

American education values individuality and encourages curiosity. The students can raise questions anytime in class, which might be a challenge for teachers to stay focused and keep on track. Besides, it might be a struggle for teachers whether to give a low score to students, since they might be thought of as “mean” teachers. In contrast, Chinese education emphasizes hard work and self-reflection. The questions are usually answered at the end of class after the teacher finishes the systematic teaching. In Chinese culture, a teacher who gives low scores to students is a responsible one, helping students face the problems objectively. Just as an old Chinese saying goes, “Good medicine is bitter to the tongue but benefits your sickness, good advice is harsh to the hear but do good to your actions.”

Education Briefs South Charlotte Girl Scouts complete journey program The ninth- and 10th-grade Girl Scouts, of Troop 1460 from Sharon Presbyterian Church, completed their journey program, “Sow What.”

Journey programs are ways for Girl Scouts to work as a team to identify and solve a community problem in an effort toward earning their Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts.

The Troop 1460 journey program focused on issues concerning food, such as their food footprint and the importance of buying locally.

The girls visited a Harris Teeter store to identify local food items. They also planned and cooked a meal using only local ingredients. They made a salad made with kale from a backyard garden; eggs from a local chicken coop; sweet potatoes fries from farmers’ market potatoes; pasta and marinara sauce from local tomatoes; bread from a Charlotte bakery; and homemade butter.

Through the cooking process, they also learned about the meanings of “food footprint” and “locavore.”

The girls also engaged in a “take action” project, where they learned about hunger in the United States and partnered with the Society of St. Andrew, a Christian hunger ministry that salvages fresh produces and delivers it to soup kitchens and banks across the nation.

Girl Scouts visited Asheville and a St. Andrew representative to learn about gleaning and its process and importance. Although

they did not participate in gleaning, they visited the North Asheville Tailgate Market and purchased food to donate to Beloved House, a homeless shelter in Asheville.

Through the journey, the Girl Scouts learned about food deserts and food insecurity and ways the community can help alleviate those problems.

What it means to be thankful through all stages of life

From Nov. 1 to 10, our family experienced two deaths and one birth.

While these experiences definitely put us on an emotional rollercoaster of sadness and joy, we saw many blessings in the midst of each one. In the two deaths, we experienced the blessing of lives lived to the fullest, and Dr. Mark Harris despite the disease process that ultimately claimed our loved ones, their passage through death to heaven was peaceful and they were surrounded by their loved ones.

The birth of our grandson was a joyous event with friends and family in the waiting room.

Through difficult process of labor and delivery, expert medical professionals surrounded our daughter-in-law with the ability to save her life should things have gone drastically wrong. In 10 exhausting days, we lived the extremes of human emotion.

Yet all of these processes fell in the natural order of things. Elderly parents must pass on some day.

Grown children will experience the joy of becoming parents themselves and parents gain the joy of becoming grandparents.

On Friday, Nov. 13, hundreds of families got the devastating news that their precious loved ones were taken from them suddenly, unnaturally and

violently by terrorists.

St. Augustine, in his “Confessions,” states that sins of violence and vice originate from the lust for power and the gratification of the corrupt nature.

This perfectly captures the sick narcissism of the sponsors of terror, who entice women and children to blow themselves up and delight in filming the most barbaric acts for display to the world on social media. It was impossible not to contrast the lives of my loved ones with the lives of those suffering under the tyranny of ISIS. It was impossible not to recognize what a blessing it is to live in a peaceful, stable society. It was impossible not to cry out to God for relief for the suffering of so many around the world.

As Thanksgiving season surrounds us, go ahead and be busy with food preparation, shopping plans, and thoughts of the joy of the holiday season. But also take a moment to stop and reflect on the meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday. It commemorates the peaceful interaction of two very different groups and reminds us of the highest and best in humanity. It reminds us of the tremendous sacrifices made by so many of our ancestors to build the nation we now call home.

Most of all, Thanksgiving reminds us to stop and thank our Creator for all of the blessings in our lives. Augustine recognized that forgetting God was the root of all violence, when “each of us proudly sets his heart on some one part of your creation instead of on the whole.”

Step back, see the big picture, and be thankful.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever.” – 1 Chronicles 16:34

Calvary to hold candlelight Christmas Eve service CHARLOTTE – Calvary Church will hold its annual community Christmas Eve candlelight service at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. on Dec. 24. Charlotte Catholic reaches semis again

Charlotte Catholic trailed for the third time this season, overcoming two early deficits to beat No. 7-seeded North Davidson, 35-23, in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state playoffs.

The No. 3-seeded Cougars advance to play top-seeded Dudley (13-1, 5-0 All Metro 4A) in the semifinals Friday at 7:30 p.m. This is the sixth straight season Catholic has reached the semifinals.

“We’re going to face a Dudley team that’s only lost one game in the last three years at their place,” Brodowicz said. “You got to believe and not panic and persevere and weather some of the haymakers and bounce back and respond well, then we’re going to be OK.” Senior quarterback John Walton knows this is the moment his team has been waiting for, and they’re ready for the pressure of performing on a big stage.

“All three playoff games have been relatively close,” Walton said. “That’s going to help us a lot, just the way we prepare and the way if we get down against Dudley we’ll be able to bounce back and play a good second half. If

we get up on them, we’ll know how to handle it.”

Catholic certainly knows how to fight through adversity; when it trailed North Davidson 10-7 in the second quarter, the Cougars proceeded to march 95 yards down the field, and senior running back Jaret Anderson capped the game-changing drive with a three-yard touchdown run to put Catholic on top for good.

The Cougars yielded 315 yards and three touchdowns through the air from North Davidson quarterback Joe Butts, but Shrine Bowl running back and West Virginia commit Kennedy McKoy only gained 70 yards on 17 carries.

“Our motto all year has been bend, don’t break,” senior defensive tackle Owen Hall said. “We’ll let them go down the field with those 10, 15 yarders, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is keeping them on the other side of the goal line. We always try to shut down the run. That’s always our first priority.”

Catholic’s ground attack was dominant once again, gaining 255 yards on Friday, while Walton completed 7-12 passes for 136 yards.

Anderson led the way on the ground with 178 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. The Cougars will need

another big-time performance from him against Dudley.

Speed back Angel Marrero III adds another dimension to Catholic’s running game, giving the Cougars a homerun hitter if they can get him out in open space. He rushed 11 times for 66 yards in the win over North Davidson.

“We persevered,” Brodowicz said.

“They’re a good football team. You can’t mimic that speed in practice. I thought we were in good shape the whole time. I thought at halftime we could wear them down.

“I thought that’s what we did at the end. The kids just made plays. It was a great high school football game. Both teams slugged it out, throwing out their best shots, leaving everything on the field like they’re supposed to.”

The Cougars lost their previous meeting with the Panthers, a 20-15 decision at Dudley, Dec. 6, 2013. It’ll be a tall task again this year. Dudley is led by junior dual-threat quarterback Hendon Hooker, who claims five scholarship offers. He’s accounted for 3,209 yards of total offense and 32 touchdowns.

Senior running back Connell Young, who has three scholarship offers, has been a workhorse for the Panthers, rushing for 2,324 yards and 27

touchdowns on 218 carries.

Catholic will need to eliminate Dudley’s ground game – or slow it down at the least – to make the Panthers more one dimensional offensively.

Defensively, Dudley has multiple playmakers. Junior linebacker Nigel Peele leads the team with 143 tackles while senior defensive end Zachary Pressley has recorded a team-high, 20.5 sacks this season.

Catholic’s offensive line coach Frank Garcia will have his unit prepared to

make war in the trenches, but Dudley’s front seven will be charged up too. Whichever team wins the battle up front will put itself in great position for the victory.

“They’re well-coached,” Brodowicz said. “They’re going to be physical.

They’re going to be athletic. It’s going to be a struggle up at their place, but we’re glad to be playing in the fourth round and we’ll take this week to get ready. We’ll give them a good game I hope.”

Runner of the year Haywood Ferguson South Meck South Meck’s Haywood Ferguson was dominant the entire season. The sophomore’s highlight moments came when he won the So. Meck 8 Conference Championship (16 minutes and 24 seconds) and the NCHSAA 4A West Regional (16:08).

Senior Tanner Sutter was steady all season. Sutter, who was last year’s Runner of the Year, finished third in the So. Meck 8 Conference Championship (16 minutes and 30 seconds) and third in the NCHSAA 4A West Regional (16:16). He’ll graduate as one of Providence’s most decorated runners.

Charlotte Latin senior Jack Ratterree’s final laps with the Hawks were impressive. Ratterree was runner-up in the CISAA Championship, finishing it in 16 minutes and 18 seconds. He came in sixth place in the NCISAA 3A State Championship (16:37) and is receiving interest from a handful of Ivy League schools.

Providence sophomore Andrew Kiss eluded the sophomore slump, and stayed near the front of the pack most of his second season with the Panthers. He was runner-up in the So. Meck 8 Conference Championship (16 minutes and 26 seconds), and placed 10th in the NCHSAA 4A West Regional (16:32).

Myers Park’s Marshall Williamson was stellar as a sophomore. He led the Mustangs to a Southwestern 4A Conference Championship, winning the meet with a time of 17 minutes and 41 seconds. Williamson placed eighth in the NCHSAA 4A West Regional (16:31).

Hayden Blalock Providence

Providence’s Hayden Blalock enjoyed a successful junior season. Blalock was not only one of the Panthers top runners, but also was among the area’s elite. He came in fourth place in the So. Meck 8 Conference Championship (16 minutes and 35 seconds), and took fifth in the NCHSAA 4A West Regional (16:29).

Ardrey Kell junior Ryan Kendall was among the elite runners in the area. He came in fifth in the So. Meck 8 Conference Championship, running it in 16 minutes and 36 seconds. Kendall also placed fourth in the NCHSAA 4A West Regional (16 minutes and 27 seconds).

Providence Day’s Noah Dolhare led the charge as a sophomore. Dolhare won the CISAA Championship, completing it in 16 minutes and seven seconds. He placed third in the NCISAA 3A State Championship (16:02.5), setting the pace for the Charges to finish third overall.

Covenant Day’s Jonathan Vines enjoyed a successful season with the Lions. Vines placed fourth in the CISAA Championship (17 minutes and five seconds) and 11th in the NCISAA 3A State Championship (16:44), making him an easy choice for all-conference honors.

Charger boys basketball could be Field’s best team in years

Providence Day boys’ basketball coach Brian Field said he was questioned and even mocked for scheduling such a difficult slate of games for his team to start the 2015-16 season.

After a 0-2 start, it appeared the naysayers were right. But Field and the Chargers didn't listen and instead went on to beat two of the best teams in the state, downing High Point Christian Academy, 76-66, Nov. 28 and Greensboro Day, 55-50, Dec. 1.

The win over HPCA shouldn't be taken lightly; the Cougars were lauded with hype after acquiring center Edrice Adebayo, a Kentucky signee. Adebayo, who threw down multiple highlight reel dunks, left his mark on the game with 23 points and 15 rebounds, but the Chargers won in convincing fashion.

But Providence Day’s victory over Greensboro Day arguably means more. The Char-

gers fell to the Bengals twice last season, including a season-ending 61-44 loss in the state semifinals.

“The thing I love about our team is we’re not afraid of anybody,” Field said. “I thought we came right out of the gate, and showed that. In order for us to win the 3A state championship that’s who you got to beat.

You got to beat a nationally ranked team.

“If we hadn’t played Oak Hill and Mountain Mission I don’t think we compete like we did. Those games obviously prepared for us for the big stage.”

The Chargers are getting significant production from multiple players. Sophomore point guard Devon Dotson (18.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.7 apg and 1.4 spg) adds a dimension to Providence Day’s offensive attack it didn’t have last season.

Grant Williams, a Tennessee signee and senior combo forward (17.4 ppg, 12 rpg, three apg and 2.4 bpg) has been dominant in the post and a matchup nightmare for opponents.

“Grant’s not afraid of anybody,” Field said. “In his mind he feels like he was underrecruited. He’s thrilled to be going to Tennessee and the SEC, but he’s got a chip on his shoulder.”

Senior forward Josh Howard (13.4 ppg, seven rpg, 1.3 apg and 1.7 spg) and sophomore shooting guard Trey Wertz (11.3 ppg, three rpg and 1.6 apg) also are playing at a high level, while seniors, forward Isaac Johnson and guard Scott Peterson play meaningful roles and give Providence Day other viable options.

“We’re getting better. I don’t think we’re clicking on all cylinders yet,” Field said. “I didn’t like where we were a couple of games ago. We’re still trying to figure it out particularly with a new point guard, who’s a little more ball-dominant than our past point guards have been.”

“I don’t think we’ve hit our peak. I think we’re making progress, which it’s all about.”

Williams said he and his teammates are right where they want to be – playing against some of the best competition in the state.

“What stands out about our team is no matter what we’re going to fight, and we’re not going to let guys punk us,” Williams said. “We’re going to battle back with them no matter if they’re three times our size or quicker than us. We’re going to play our butts off.

“We’re going to try to win the game no matter who the competition is. It’s not over.

We’re still trying to find our identity. We’re a whole new team. Watch us at the end of the season. We might be at Dick’s.”

Even though the Chargers are playing at a high level and taking down top-tier teams, they’re nowhere near their potential. It’s a long way from now until the end of February, but expect the Chargers to get much better if they can stay healthy.

This is the most talented team Providence Day has put on the court in a long time, and one that looks like it has state championship potential. We’ll know for sure by the end of February, but count on the Chargers to prove their doubters wrong.
