A look at how the area voted Stone, James win local election races

If Mecklenburg County had its way, Donald Trump would square off against Hillary Clinton in November.

But results from the March 15 primary also show that several south Charlotte residents in the Republican presidential primary also supported Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

A competitive race to the White House, combined with a few intriguing local match-ups, inspired 207,709 people to vote. Voter turnout was at 31.7 percent.

Here are some observations from south Charlotte-area races.

N.C. House 105

Scott Stone defeated Tim Morgan to win the Republican nomination for Jacqueline Schaffer’s District 105 seat in the N.C. House. Stone earned 4,670 votes (52.2 percent) – 395 more than Morgan.

“Thanks to all those who supported me in this race,” Stone told his nearly 900 Facebook supporters. “Grateful to be the GOP nominee of NC House District 105. This was a hard fought battle on both sides.”

Stone, a two-time candidate for mayor, also tweeted support to Morgan, commending the former school board member for his service.

Morgan managed to edge out Stone in five of

the 16 precincts, including Belle Johnston Community Center, Community House Middle School, Hawk Ridge Elementary School, St. Matthew Catholic Church and Harrison United Methodist Church.

Stone raised $27,224.50 from Jan. 1 to Feb. 29, compared to Morgan’s $20,095.

Stone will campaign against Democrat Connie Green-Johnson in the general election. GreenJohnson, who ran for county commissioner in 2012, raised $3,102 from Jan. 1 to Feb. 29.

County Commissioner races

Commissioner Bill James won his 11th term convincingly against challenger Joe Levy in the Republican primary for the District 6 seat. James will have no competition in November.

James, who has an accounting background, tallied 11,641 votes, or 63 percent. He won all 29 precincts in his district, which includes Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville.

Damiko Faukner, pastor at Ben Salem Presbyterian Church, couldn’t overcome incumbents Ella Scarborough, Pat Cotham and Trevor Fuller to represent Democrats in the at-large county commissioner race.

Scarborough led all candidates with 76,008 votes, followed by Cotham (62,950), Fuller (58,048) and Faulkner (35,502). Cotham received the most votes in multiple precincts in southern Mecklenburg.

Republican Jeremy Brasch, a project analyst at an information technology firm, will try to

unseat one of the three incumbents in the November race.

Incumbent Vilma Leake won 65.9 percent of the District 2 vote, despite facing two opponents in the Democrat primary. She will not be running against a Republican in the general election.

U.S. President

Hillary Clinton dominated Bernie Sanders in Mecklenburg, earning 71,265 votes among Democrats, or 60.32 percent. Clinton led in all but 21 of 195 precincts.

Sanders won only 19 of the 195 precincts, including Charlotte Christian Swim and Tennis Center, Collinswood Elementary, Montclaire Elementary, Pineville Church of the Nazarene, Sharon Lakes, St. Stephen United Methodist and Wedgewood Church.

Donald Trump led Republicans in Mecklenburg with 28,531 votes, followed by Ted Cruz (26,557), John Kasich (19,991) and Marco Rubio (10,598). Some 1,712 votes went to candidates no longer in the race, while 410 stated no preference. Rubio dropped out of the race March 15.

Trump, Cruz and Kasich each won precincts in the south Charlotte region.

Some of the area precincts Trump dominated by more than 80 votes include Community House Middle, Hawk Ridge Elementary, Providence Country Club, South Mecklenburg Presbyterian and William Davie Park.

Cruz won precincts such as Billingsville Elementary, Carmel Baptist, Living Saviour Lutheran, Providence Presbyterian, Randolph Middle and St. Stephen United Methodist.

Though Kasich finished third among Mecklenburg votes, he topped 27 of the 51 precincts

that comprise the County Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour’s district, which includes much of SouthPark. Gary Johnson earned 214 votes in Mecklenburg County to lead the Libertarian ticket.

N.C. Governor

Gov. Pat McCrory easily won the Republican primary, claiming 81.8 percent of the state voters and 78 percent of county voters.

Robert Brawley, a former state legislator from Mooresville, edged McCrory out in four precincts in the northern part of the county, where the governor absorbed criticism for not taking a decisive stance against the Interstate 77 managed lanes contract with a foreign company.

McCrory, of Charlotte, will face stiffer competition from Democrat challenger Roy Cooper, whom won the Democrat nomination after beating Ken Spaulding at a 67 percent county clip and 68 percent state tally. Cooper carried every precinct in Mecklenburg County.

Bond referendum

Mecklenburg County residents favored the Connect NC Public Improvement Bond, with 70.5 percent (138,455 votes) voting for the referendum. Sixty-one percent of state voters supported the measure.

The $2 billion bond consists of infrastructure projects in 75 counties, including Mecklenburg.

About half of the money will help construction and renovations at UNC System colleges and 17 percent will go to community colleges.

Mecklenburg projects include $90 million for a new sciences building at UNC Charlotte and $9.6 million for new constructions and renovations to Central Piedmont Community College.

Our nation needs a communal Xanax When I drive my son to daycare, our route takes us through a highly trafficked four-way stop. These stops are not complicated, because the laws of eyesight should get the job done.

Here’s how it alJonathan McElvy legedly works (and I do apologize for the sarcastic adverbs): You pull up to the stop, glance around to gauge which cars were there first, and then you let them all go before you carry on about your way.

Of course, there’s always a problem. Either a sweet lady just can’t find the courage to press the gas, or there’s a dude in a truck who could give a thud less. He’s got places to be.

This morning, I encountered the truck guy and I watched the most wonderful spectacle transpire. He rolled to a stop, had cars sitting at the other three stops and he started his arrogant claim to the intersection. First, the car to his left stepped on it and stopped the truck in its tracks. Then the car head-on cut across in front of him, stopping the jerk once again. And the chronologically correct third car slipped on past him, forcing the fellow to slam on his brakes once more.

I was a few cars back, so I got to watch with great delight as the admonished driver’s head bobbed back and forth each time he slammed on his brakes. Admittedly, it’s one of the few times I’ve felt great pride in the American driver.

In what’s likely an indication that I need intense therapy, this morning’s traffic democracy drove me to consider the current state of the American political landscape.

Is it possible for us all just to calm down?

We’ve got four candidates, all who seem to act a bit like that truck jerk this morning, but don’t forget we’ve got good, ol’ Americans at every corner to make the situation right.

Sure, we can’t be naïve about this, considering the list of potential suitors to the White House. There’s a lady one witness away from facing indictment. We’ve got “Back to the Future’s” Doc Brown running as an unabashed Socialist. There’s a billionaire-turned-TV-star fending off attackers.

And there’s a half-term Senator from Texas who built a career antagonizing anyone in his path.

It’s no wonder the nation needs to take a communal Xanax right about now.

But can I offer some historical perspective, which likely will do nothing to stop the panic?

In 1992, our esteemed electorate put a womanizing hillbilly from Arkansas in the White House. Republicans screamed bloody blasphemy and threatened to leave the country. They didn’t.

Instead, Americans took control. When

Bill Clinton took office, he enjoyed a complete majority in Congress – a Democratic controlled House and Senate. And that lasted all of two years. In the November 1994 mid-term elections, the voters literally cleaned house and gave Republicans a majority in both the House and Senate. It was our way of checking Clinton and his wife’s idea for universal health care.

Fast forward to 2000, when George W. was elected president. He walked in with a majority Republican House and an evenly split Senate. In November 2002, both the House and Senate were under Republican rule.

Then a couple of wars and a concerned economy later, American voters put a stop to the majority, electing both a Democratic House and Senate in 2006. We checked the president again.

In 2008, Barack Obama won the election and Republicans demonized everything from his birth certificate to his spiritual advisor, clamoring we had just elected our first Muslim president and that he’d shut America down for good.

You’ve probably figured out the trend now.

In 2010, voters replaced the House majority and made it Republican. One ObamaCare later, in 2014, and voters switched both the House and Senate to Republican.

People can say all they want about Americans. They can (and do) call us greedy, arrogant, overweight – you name it. But when it comes to the processes of our government, I’ve always tended to think we’re a fairly smart group of folks. I still believe that, even though we’re acting like we have fire ants in our collective pants.

You might not believe me, but if you’ll clip this column and pull it out in 2020, you might. If Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, we’ll still be a great nation. She’ll carry on Obama policies, and about half of us will hate it. But we’ll still be American and still live in the greatest country in the world.

If Bernie Sanders wins, he’ll have about as much power as I’ll have in Washington. You think Congress – Republicans or Democrats – will approve his Marxist plans?

If Ted Cruz wins, he’ll get about as much done as Sanders. He has never played the part of compromiser, and if he doesn’t, he and Bernie might as well buy a timeshare together.

And if Donald Trump wins, what these angry masses of hooligans need to understand is that Trump loves making the deal.

He loves negotiating, and this presidential race is a negotiation for him. When Trump buys a business or a piece of property, he gets the deal done and then hands it over to people who know what they’re doing. He’ll do the exact thing in the White House.

We may have a bunch of arrogant drivers trying to plow through our intersection of a nation. But I also know we’ve got about 200 million voting Americans ready to step on the gas, no matter who wins.

Training young scientists at summer camp

Future engineers, paleontologists, marine biologists and video game designers will one day trace their love for science and the start of their careers back to Terrific Scientific.

South Charlotte-based Terrific Scientific is a hands-on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) program for students 5 to 14 years old. Beginning in June, Terrific Scientific will launch 35 summer programs aimed at engaging students in the science fields through hands-on projects and real-world experiences.

Camps include everything from veterinary medicine to digital arts.

“Our goal is to get kids excited about science and the real world around them, and to realize that science is fun,” said Jill Long, director of Terrific Scientific. “Everyone is a scientist.”

Terrific Scientific camps run weekly from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. for 6- to 15-year-olds and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for 5- and 6-year-olds, with precamp and post-camp availability. Kids begin the day with a demonstration by a program director, and then take what they learned into a lab setting. Between experiments, projects and handson learning, they spend time outside doing teambuilding activities.

“They aren’t sitting in a classroom being lectured,” Long said. “We introduce a topic, and then they learn about it through a project or experiment. We get them excited about science from a young age, and show them it’s not out of reach for them. A lot of camps give introductions

so kids can say, ‘Maybe I can do something like that one day.’”

At the end of each day, camp counselors – many of whom are CMS teachers or pursuing a teaching degree – send kids home with a list of specific questions parents can ask their child.

For Long, it’s about keeping the parents involved and encouraging the children to talk about what they’re learning.

Long said the program’s veterinary camp is among the most popular, along with the robotic’s camp. New this year is minecraft modding.

“The bottom line is everything we do is handson and it’s fun,” she said. “If you make it fun, they’re going to be excited about it.”

News Briefs Charlotte Radiology mobile unit to offer 3-D mammography Charlotte Radiology has expanded by adding a fourth mobile breast center to its fleet in response to increased demand for convenient access to early screening for breast cancer.

The new unit will serve women in Mecklenburg, Gaston, Union and York counties.

The new unit will launch April 1 and will be the first in the Carolinas to offer digital breast tomosynthesis, known as 3-D mammography.

This program allows radiologists to look at different layers of breast tissue, which will reduce the amount of call backs for false positives.

“The mobile breast centers bring early breast cancer detection right to the workplace, allowing health-conscious employers the opportunity to provide their employees with a more convenient option for breast cancer screening,” said Katie Yarborough, Charlotte Radiology’s corporate health and community relations manager.

McConnell Golf plans to renovate its newly acquired Providence Country Club over the next few years for $4 million.

The company announced last month it added Providence Country Club to its network, which includes golf clubs in Raleigh, Greensboro, New London, Durham and Asheville.

Real estate records show the sale of the golf course at more than $5.2 million.

Providence Country Club features an 18hole Dan Maples layout and plays to a par of 72. The club, established in 1989, was redesigned in 2006.

SignUpGenius was named the 20th best place to work in North Carolina among smallto-medium-sized companies in the 2016 Best Employers in North Carolina ranking.

Grandparents are at risk to lose contact with their grandchildren if the parents separate. If animosity exists between the parents or between a parent and the grandparents, grandparents need to take legal action to ensure that they have a relationship with their grandchildren.

Parents have a constitutionally protected right regarding their minor children’s custody.

No individual, including a grandparent, can interfere with an “intact” family. An intact family is one where the parents live together, or a parent and child live together when the other parent is deceased or when the other parent is a non-custodial parent through a court’s custody order.

If the parents separate and there is a likelihood of estrangement between a parent and the grandparents, the grandparents should seek grandparent visitation in the parents’ separation agreement. If possible, the custody provisions should be entered as a consent order. The parents’ order would allow the grandparents contact with their grandchildren notwithstanding the parents’ future circumstances (i.e., death of a parent who is grandparents’ child, estrangement).

The grandparents’ right to intervene in a custody action should be absolute if they prove they have a substantial relationship with their grandchildren. In NC, there is no “intact” family when an ongoing parental custody dispute exists in the courts. If the grandparents intervene, the court hears evidence whether a substantial relationship exists between the grandparents and their grandchildren. Then, if it is in the best interest of their grandchildren to have visitation with the grandparents (and it usually is), the court should provide for grandparental visitation.

Project could transform schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athletic fields

A proposed development with Olympic-sized aspirations for Ballantyne could be brought back down to earth by neighbors who feel the project might not fit with the character of their neighborhood.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools gave staff approval in May 26, 2015, to enter into a 50-year lease agreement with the United States Performance Center (USPC) for joint use of Jay M. Robinson Middle Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athletic fields. The USPC is a research campus striving to help youth reach their athletic potential.

They have collaborated on plans for an athletic campus with the following features: â&#x20AC;˘Â 60,000-square-foot performance center with indoor sports, as well as offices for nutrition and rehabilitation. â&#x20AC;˘Â An indoor sports dome with track, multi-use field and 16 indoor batting/driving cages. â&#x20AC;˘Â Several outdoor multi-purpose fields, baseball diamond, tennis courts, sand volleyball and fitness trail.

The USPC needs permission from the city to rezone the 48 acres from residential to mixed-use development to carry out its vision. A public hearing is scheduled for May 16.

Hermes Goudes, who lives nearby, says residents in the Raintree and Quail Acres neighborhoods believe the project is admirable but they are worried about proposed elevations.

Site plans allow the dome to scale up to 90 feet, while the performance center could measure 60 feet.

USPC is offering to replace the artificial tree designed to disguise the 175-foot cell phone tower on site with a giant Olympic torch that could top out at 200 feet.

The center also wants to install a monument sign thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 50 feet high with an electronic face. The sign wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t include moving or flashing pictures, but would display an advertisement for at least

eight seconds. Signage also would face Interstate 485.

The site, situated between Ballantyne Commons Parkway and I-485, is surrounded by homes, though the Promenade on Providence and Providence Commons shopping centers are just east of the school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a residential area,â&#x20AC;? Goudes said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even the commercial shopping centers down the street are only single-story, fairly lowkey, in a valley depression and cannot be seen from the residential homes.â&#x20AC;?

Plans call for an eight-foot planting strip and six-foot sidewalk along part of Ballantyne Commons Parkway. Commuters will access the campus through two full-access driveways off Ballantyne Commons, which would likely require turn lanes along the road.

Survey shows proximity, choice and school environment as top priorities

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools asked community member to take a survey related to student assignment throughout January and February. The results are in and they show the community wants neighborhood schools.

CMS received approximately 27,453 responses from parents, students, employees and community, with most responses (44 percent) coming from parents of CMS elementary schools.

The Board of Education and its policy committee instituted the survey to determine where the community stands on student assignment, so they could continue developing those guidelines, which will affect the 2017-18 school year.

Many parents spoke out during the boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s discussion of student assignment goals in early February that demonstrated a divide between a push for increased diversity and reduction of concentrations of poverty and guaranteed neighborhood schools. The current student assignment plan prioritizes neighborhood schools.

Some parents shared apprehensions about the survey, stating they felt the questions were oddly worded or skewed to produce a specific result.

Authorities of the survey said some zip codes were overrepresented, but all zip codes were represented in the survey. The public results donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t specify the number of respondents from each district.

However, Superintendent Ann Clark said the survey is one â&#x20AC;&#x153;data pointâ&#x20AC;? on a list of items the policy committee will use to determine the student assignment guidelines. The committee released the results, but an analysis is to come later.

Most survey respondents â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially in the southern part of the district â&#x20AC;&#x201C; urged to retain neighborhood schools. Approximately 85 percent of survey respondents agreed that the proximity of the school to their home is a priority in their school selection. Forty-six percent of voters said location or proximity to their homes was the most important factor and 17 percent said diversity is the least important factor in terms of school selection, when asked to rank their top three and lowest three selections.

District 5, of SouthPark, and 6, of Matthews, Mint Hill and south Charlotte, ranked school proximity â&#x20AC;&#x153;highâ&#x20AC;? in importance, with 57 percent of District 6 respondents stating location is the most important factor in school selection.

Some parents have spoken in favor of increased diversity â&#x20AC;&#x201C; both socioeconomic and racial â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to break up high concentrations of poverty.

But survey results that state 82 percent of CMS parents disagreed that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be OK with a longer bus ride to travel to a more diverse school.

Even with a push for greater diversity, respondents said their children already go to diverse schools. Seventy-six percent of people said their children currently attend a school with a diverse socioeconomic population and 83 percent said

their children currently are at a school with a diverse racial or ethnic population.

Community members, particularly from advocacy group ONEMeck, indicated areas of the community have high concentrations of poverty leading to poor academic results. Some said schools with high poverty often donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have socioeconomic diversity.

However, respondents said the most prominent factors to academic achievement include teacher quality (93 percent), principal quality (86 percent) and community and family engagement (85 percent), which trumped school boundaries (55 percent), as having the most impact.

The survey questioned what would help reduce concentrations of poverty. Overall, respondents pointed to increased school choice (70 percent), increased partial magnet choices (73 percent) and increased school choice within a zone (73 percent) as the top suggested solutions.

When asked the â&#x20AC;&#x153;bestâ&#x20AC;? solution to reducing concentrations of poverty, 31.7 percent identified â&#x20AC;&#x153;increased school choice within a zone providing every student an opportunity to attend a choice school within a certain proximity.â&#x20AC;? Approximately 16.1 percent named limiting the percent of concentrations of poverty assigned to a school as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;bestâ&#x20AC;? option.

Despite a push from community members to make increased diversity a priority for student assignment, many responses emphasized ex-

panded choices at magnet schools or â&#x20AC;&#x153;zonesâ&#x20AC;? for students as an alternative to physically breaking up poorer neighborhoods with boundary lines.

Survey results state community members looked at internal aspects of a school to see an impact, emphasizing a great push for quality teachers and administration. With a low teacher pay ranking throughout the state, CMS has experienced difficulties attracting best candidates.

District staff said the survey reflected some neighborhoods more than others because some zip codes had greater number of participants.

Specific tallies from each zip code have not been released.

The survey was available on public computers and district staff traveled to multiple events with survey opportunities, but some still might not have had access. Also, participants could take the survey multiple times; the board was going to limit one survey per computer, but because of the use of public computers, they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t create that provision.

The policy committee will soon select a consultant to carry out the student assignment plan based on the controversial student assignment goals the board approved in late February, as well as the survey results.

South Charlotte Middle art students embrace imperfections

South Charlotte Middle School art teacher Ted Cooke wanted his honors art class to appreciate the beauty in imperfections, and not see bumps on their bowls as mistakes.

“One of the things I noticed was students have a strong draw toward things that are symmetrical and are smooth, like they see in Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel,” he said.

“As an art teacher, I don’t like looking at that stuff. I like looking at originality – no matter how imperfect it is.”

Cooke wanted to counterbalance the students’ affinity for machine-made ceramics with a more weathered and imperfect style of art.

Through a grant from the Arts & Science Council (ASC), South Charlotte Middle students tried their hands at Raku, a firing method originally from Japan that produces ceramics that are crazed, crackled, burnt with horsehair, leaves or paper and are colorful and sculptural, but not functional. They traveled to ClayWorks to work with Greg Scott to create their bowls.

“I wanted the students to see that beautiful ceramics does not always consist of perfectly smooth, symmetrical vessels,” Cooke said.

The ASC has a school education grant program that provides $1,500 to every CharlotteMecklenburg public school and some charter and private schools. Schools can use the grant

in the ASC’s education provider directory of about 120 art-, science- and history-related programs and facilities that have been vetted by the nonprofit.

“Schools are seeing a reduction in funding – especially in the arts – and we want to give students quality experiences that can enhance their experience in the classroom,” said Erin Elliot, the ASC education program director.

The ASC seeks to provide opportunities that link to classroom curriculums, Elliot added.

“Arts, science and history are crucial to students’ education and we want to ensure access to these experiences regardless of the school they go to, their socioeconomic background or how close they are to Uptown.”

ClayWorks hoped to expose South Charlotte Middle students to arts and culture, according to ClayWorks Director Adrienne Dellinger.

“We want to bring kids in to expose them to arts and culture when they’re young. We know that if they’re not exposed at a young age, they’re not likely to do it as an adult,” Dellinger said.

The director and Cooke saw the unique firing styles as a learning opportunity for the middle school student.

“I wanted them to start understanding that the bumps and bulge on their art are important,” Cooke said. “I love looking at pottery that has character … I love to see their own character into their pot.”

I almost picked up three women at Blockbuster

I need to take you back to the days before Netflix streamed videos into your home, before Netflix mailed you DVDs. Let me take you back to the days of brick and mortar stores that rented videos. Let me take you back to the days of Blockbuster.

For some of you who are too young to remember, Blockbuster rented VHS tapes.

Their motto was, “Be kind, rewind.” They were referring to the tape. You never saw that motto on DVDs (OK – bad joke; I’ll keep my day job).

When my kids were younger, Friday night was movie and pizza night. Nothing took me away from it. It was special because we had one TV in the house, which had basic cable. That meant we had 15 stations we watched. We didn’t have the Disney channel. I was too cheap to pay for it. That made what we watched on Friday night more challenging.

Each Friday, my wife would take one of our children to pick out the video. Sometimes, we would cheer for what they rented; other times we said, “What were you thinking?” I was never allowed to go to Blockbuster. In fact, my family banned me from doing the Friday video rental run.

That is until one Friday, my wife and kids

were busy with something, and, without thinking, they sent me to the store. This would be my one chance at getting what I wanted. I scoped out the store, going up and down each aisle, looking at the titles, reading the Rev. Tony Marciano descriptions, reviewing the ratings, wondering if this would meet my family’s needs. People came into the store, picked up their videos and left, while I was still reviewing my options. I knew my family would never again let me go on the Friday night video rental run.

I finally made my decision, picked up the video and walked to the cashier. As I was waiting in line, a store representative looked at me and said, “Did you find everything you need?” I said, “No, I couldn’t find the romantic comedies.” No sooner had I said the two words “romantic comedies” than three women looked at me and said in unison, “You like romantic comedies?” to which I thought, “If only I was single.

What a way to pick up women. Just go to Blockbuster and look at the movies in the romantic comedy aisle. You will be the only guy there.”

My wife and I are opposites. I tease her that she likes TV shows such as “Criminal Minds” or “The Walking Dead.” I tried watching the zombies but got tired of them being blown up or watching them eating someone. She thinks it’s great. I leave the room.

If I turn on a Hallmark romantic comedy, she immediately complains that it is predictable. It is. There are two people in this movie who fight with each other for one hour and 58 minutes but will kiss each other in the one hour, 59th minute. You can set your clock to it.

Opposites attract. The very thing that attracted you to this person will be the very thing that annoys you after you say, “I do.”

It’s getting past that annoyance where you find your very best friend.

I never did go back to Blockbuster. My family was very nervous when I returned home with the video. They were very grateful it wasn’t a romantic comedy. They weren’t going to send me two weeks in a row and have me come home with the wrong video.

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Charlotte Christian sophomore Rachel Lee buoyed the Knights with a stellar second campaign at the high school level. She finished third in the state in the 200-yard freestyle, completing it in 1:53.05. Lee earned a spot on the allconference and all-state teams.

Dragelin, a freshman, was runner-up at states in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.04), third at states in the 100-yard backstroke (57.43 seconds - Latin record), took third in the 200-yard individual medley at conference (2:14.57) and finished runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke at conference (1:00.29).

Senior Carolyn Kammeyer earned co-MVP and allconference honors, finished state runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly (55.01 seconds), was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished fourth at states, took fourth at regionals in the 100-yard butterfly and was runner-up at conference in the 100yard butterfly.

Providence Day junior Abbie Cochell, who earned team MVP honors, was a key component to the Chargers success this season. She won the state championship in the 100-yard breaststroke, finished fifth in the state in the 50-yard freestyle, won the conference championship in the 100yard breaststroke and the 50-yard freestyle.

Larson was named team MVP, finished fifth in the state in the 500-yard freestyle, eighth in the state in the 200-yard individual medley, won the 500yard freestyle at regionals, placed third in the 200-yard individual medley at regionals, won the 200-yard individual medley at conference and took third in the 500-yard freestyle at states.

Providence girls’ soccer set for championship season

A state championship loss is always difficult to rebound from, but Providence’s girls’ soccer team is making it appear seamless with a 6-0-1 (1-0 So. Meck 8) start to the season.

“I think experience is everything,” Providence coach Nathan Williams said. “The girls have been there before. They know the last game of last year was a defeat.

“That’s something we have to continue to process. We know we can’t win every single game, but they know there’s a certain level of expectations for us to win as many games as we possibly can. They want us to have the same type of run we had last year.”

Williams, who is in his second year at the helm, feels confident about his team and know it’s going to be difficult to beat.

Providence lost a slew of talent due to graduation, including Ellie Deaver, who

took her talents to the Charlotte 49ers.

However, the Panthers might be even better this time around. Providence returns several college caliber players in senior midfielder/center back Lauren Ellis Coach Williams (Louisville), junior center attacking mid Kate Hickson (Charlotte 49ers), junior midfielder Molly McGarry (UNC-Wilmington) and sophomore defender Mia Thillet (N.C. State).

Hickson, who is one of the most technical players in the area, is playing at a high level for the Panthers, which has made the midfield one of Providence’s strengths. She and McGarry are a powerful duo in terms of their ability to pressure and attack the op-

posing defense.

“Defensively, I think we’re very difficult to breakdown,” Williams said. “I don’t think teams are going to score many goals against us.”

Depth should favor Providence against most oppoMolly McGarry nents. Providence has 22 players, enabling Williams to sub liberally, because each player brings something unique to the table that helps the team.

Williams wants his players to improve their effectiveness when it comes to attacking. He doesn’t think Providence is scoring enough goals, but the Panthers have outscored opponents by a combined 36-3 and have already recorded three 9-0 shutouts. They’re currently averaging five goals a game.

But for Williams, it’s about reaching their potential, which is scary to imagine what that might be. For example, Providence beat Hough and Myers Park both 3-1, but Williams said it failed to expand its lead in those games when it had opportunities to make the outcomes more convincing.

Weddington, which it tied 1-1, was another major test, and one Williams thought his team didn’t create enough scoring opportunities to win.

Williams thinks his team will continue to improve as it gets more games under its belt.

He certainly challenged the Panthers with a difficult nonconference slate that will serve them well as they prepare for the rigors of So. Meck 8 competition and to make a run at a state title.

“It’s crucial,” Williams said. “Those games tell us so much about where we’re at and where certain players are.”

Catholic overcomes 19-point deficit to win program’s first state title

Former N.C. State men’s basketball coach, the late Jim Valvano, once said, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”

That “never say die spirit” was in the DNA of Charlotte Catholic’s boys’ basketball team the entire season, and especially when it needed it most on the biggest stage – the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state championship at the Dean E. Smith Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill March 12. The Cougars (32-1, 13-1) trailed the east’s top seed, Cary (31-2, 16-0), 38-19, with 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter, but rallied to win, 49-46.

“There’s a long time to go, and in a game like this, you just have to get it close,” Charlotte Catholic coach Mike King said. “You got to get it to a place that’s manageable, because for a long time, they’re going to be playing without a whole lot of pressure, because they got a big lead. If you can get it back to where now they all of a sudden tense up even the best players in the world have a hard time with that sometimes.

“We talk in possessions, not points. I know we got it to eight, and I said, ‘Guys, it’s only three possessions, and we got plenty of time. You’re not going to hit a 19-point shot, but you’re going to get a chance if you keep chipping away.’”

Catholic is no stranger to having its backs against the wall. The Cougars battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit at South Meck without their talented freshman big man, B.J. Mack, who was out at the time with an ankle injury, to win 75-71 in overtime.

Catholic fell behind early against Cary, as the Cougars struggled to contain Donte Tatum, Cory Gensler and Jay Hicks, who combined for 31 points. Tatum drove the lane near the end of the second quarter for a layup, giving the Imps a 25-12 halftime advan-

tage. Catholic appeared to be doomed, but no one panicked – not even when the Cougars were down by 19.

The Cougars outscored Cary 30-8 in the final 16 minutes, but it wasn’t great offense that changed the pendulum; it was suffocating defense. Once Catholic figured out how to contain Tatum, Gensler and Hicks, got a few stops and forced some turnovers that led to easy baskets, it was able to chip away at what appeared to be an insurmountable deficit.

As Cary’s lead got smaller, Catholic’s confidence grew, and the momentum shifted in its favor.

10 rebounds, but it was his defense, along with senior wing Bailey McKee and junior forward Jimmy Abate, that energized the Cougars. The trio combined for eight steals – six of which came in the fourth quarter.

Brodowicz tied the game at 44-44 with 2:42 to go, and senior guard Sam Smith retied it at 46-46 with a layup at the 1:41 mark.

McKee put the Cougars up for good when he made a free throw with 33 seconds left in regulation, giving Catholic its first lead since an 8-6 advantage at the 3:38 mark of the opening period.

Tatum missed two free throws with seven seconds remaining in the game, and Abate sank two from the charity stripe with six seconds left to give the Cougars a three-point lead before a long desperation heave from just inside half court fell short for the Imps.

“At halftime (Coach King) said we’re a second half team all year long,” Brodowicz said. “We’ve been down situations all year. Even in the North Meck game at halftime, he knows we’re a second half team, so when he came in the locker room, and he had a big smirk on his face. He knew we were going to win this game.

“Whenever I see him with a smile, it seems like all of us relax.

We relaxed, and played our game in the second half.”

Catholic never lost its cool during the midst of adversity, and never gave up. It stayed the course, and it was rewarded with the ultimate prize – a state title and the first in program history.

It has all been worth it for the whole team and coaching staff, but especially for King, who has been with the program for 13 years, including eight as the head coach, and seniors Brodowicz, forward Xander Gagnon, guard Jack Larkin and forward Justin McKinstry, who endured a nine-win season two years ago and a first round exit from the playoffs as juniors.

“It’s probably the best thing about this to be honest,” King said.

“It’s kind of bittersweet for me, because we won this game and we’re the state champions, but it’s the last time with those guys. It just means the world that these guys can go out on top.”
