a vision that transportation systems and changes to the street character will be used to unify rather than disconnect people and places.�

Konsoulis credited Charlotte for doing a few things well, namely resisting the urge to widen Fairview Road. It has also committed to opening local streets, embraced walkable mixed-use development and planned trail connections.

The panel outlined seven strategies to help Charlotte improve connectivity and access: • Close gaps in the street network. Alia Anderson, with the Toole Design Group in Maryland, said SouthPark commuters rely on a few big streets to travel. She recommends building in new streets to create smaller blocks, ideally about 300 to 400 feet. This will not only allow for shorter, direct trips for everyone, but also help create a more walkable environment. • Design pleasant, inviting local streets. The city should put pedestrians first by carefully reviewing redevelopment proposals to ensure they promote walkability. Anderson encouraged the city to think beyond ground floor retail to create engaging experiences, mentioning eight-to-15-foot sidewalks that incorporate cafÊ seating and other amenities. Anderson also recommended creating more of a slower, shared environment through some of the commercial areas with bike lanes that attract novice riders and on-street parking along shops. • Make it easer to get to and from SouthPark.

The city should focus on improving accessibility for neighborhoods most immediate to SouthPark. That doesn’t have to be solely vehicular traffic. Increased pedestrian and bike access might be the only option for some neighborhoods. The community also could champion links to the Cross Charlotte Trail, a 26-mile trail and greenway system under development that would span from Pineville to University City. • Tame Fairview, Colony and Sharon roads.

Charlotte should focus on intersections for these roads by using urban and transportation design strategies to make them more comfortable for pedestrians. The city could commission a system-wide study to make new signals and turn lanes efficient. Long-term, the city should bring the actual speeds closer to the posted speeds during non-peak hours to make it safer for everyone, Anderson said. Road setbacks could give way to trails or side paths. • Improve the mix of uses to reduce longterm congestion. SouthPark could keep more trips within its street grid by improving its mix of uses, according to Laurence Lewis with California-based Kittelson and Associates. This can be done by encouraging locally serving retail.

The city could benefit by increasing the amount of workforce housing, considering many of the people working in SouthPark don’t live there, but contribute to the congestion. • Promote shared parking. SouthPark can reduce its parking supply to allow for more development or public space. This requires adjacent businesses and land uses to share more parking.

A mix of uses would make this easier. For example, office space doesn’t need as much evening or weekend parking, while other uses might not generate as much daytime traffic. • Embrace transit with public spaces. Lewis said a lot of development around SouthPark does not include transit as part of the public

space, while walkable areas and main streets are separated from transit areas. He recommended moving the Charlotte Area Transit System’s bus station from the SouthPark Mall garage to a more prominent space. Regionally, panelists didn’t feel connecting SouthPark with light rail was feasible right now, but members encouraged more Express Bus service. Express Buses transfer people in the outskirts of the county to Uptown with limited stops in the morning and afternoon peak hours.

Speaking in one voice

John Macomber, a finance professor at Harvard Business School, said the panel heard some significant concerns from interviews about the continued success of SouthPark’s office and retail sectors.

Macomber described SouthPark as a dispersed suburban business district: • Buildings set back from the road, with low elevations in a campus setting. • Weak pedestrian orientations, with developments too far apart to maintain reasonable walking distance. • Poor choices in mode of transit. “For the last two decades, value has been created by adding square footage,â€? Macomber said. “It seems to us the next two decades value will be created not by adding more square footage but making SouthPark a more attractive place to live, work and play.â€?

To become a more compact suburban business district, Macomber suggested developers think of buildings more as a means of creating a public realm while encouraging walking and offering more transit options.

Funding this kind of change is a challenge, considering the community feels as if it’s not receiving enough attention for public investment, he said. While the area generates a lot of economic activity, as well as tax revenue, most of that money leaves the area to subsidize other parts of the city. “Stakeholders and the community need to be more deliberate about the evolution of SouthPark,� said Kim Morque, a principal with Spinnaker Real Estate Partners in Connecticut. “They need to create a shared vision and speak with a unified voice.�

He urged the formation of a business improvement district dubbed the “SouthPark Partnership.� As many as 1,500 business improvement districts operate nationally, including 50 in North Carolina.

Some local examples include Charlotte Center City Partners, which advocates for progress in Uptown, and University City Partners, which has a vested interest around UNC Charlotte.

Such groups focus on creating attractive urban centers, promoting special events and advocating for public investment. But they don’t necessary generate significant project funds, Morque said.

Macomber recommends SouthPark consider district-wide tax increment financing or grants to tackle needs like streets, paths and other amenities. This would allow projects to be financed by multiple businesses or developers to be repaid from future tax receipts.

While SouthPark doesn’t have a visible face like a Hugh McColl championing progress, it could make up ground by engaging in more public-private partnerships. Macomber recommends convening public and private stakeholders to work together toward creating a more walkable, mixed-used urban district.

Dash for Down Syndrome raises $49K Staff Report

The annual 3-2-1 Dash for Down Syndrome 5K, held March 19 at Blakeney Professional Center, raised more than $49,000 for Down syndrome educational programs, such as Together in Education, a partnership between the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte and area school systems to maximize education for students with Down syndrome. More than 1,000 participants helped surpass the organization's $45,000 goal.

Funds raised at the dash also will support the LuMind Research Down Syndrome Foundation, an organization that supports cognitive Down syndrome research.

News Briefs Jersey Mike’s to hold month of giving initiative with Ace & TJ Charlotte area Jersey Mike’s stores will help the lives of terminally ill and disabled children through its Month of Giving initiative, which runs through March 31.

More than 25 stores in Charlotte will donate sales made on their cookies to Grin Kids, a nonprofit established by The Ace & TJ Show. March 30 is the official Day of Giving, when participating stores will donate 100 percent of their sales to the charity. Money raised will go toward Grin Kids’s annual vacation to Walt Disney World.

Gold Standard Chorus wins Carolinas District Championship Charlotte’s Gold Standard Chorus won the Carolinas District Chorus Championship last weekend in Myrtle Beach. The chorus, comprised of 29 men, specializes in barbershop harmony and earned high scores from six judges with their renditions of “Piano Roll Blues” and “No New Tunes on this Old Piano.”

The group has members from their early 20s through 70s.

The group is directed by Larry Lane and brought the title back to Charlotte for the first time in 19 years.

“The win couldn't have come at a better time," said Jeff Osborne, bass singer and marketing vice president for the chorus. “Charlotte is hosting the biggest a cappella show in the Carolinas on June 18, so this is the ideal time for the chorus to be at our prime.”

Levine-Sklut Foundation raises $133K for Loaves & Fishes More than 17,000 hungry individuals in Mecklenburg County will receive a week’s worth of groceries this spring, thanks to a challenge grant by the Levine-Sklut Family Foundation.

In December 2015, Lori and Eric Sklut pledged to match up to $25,000 in donations made to nonprofit Loaves & Fishes through the end of February. The community stepped up and donated $133,199. The money will provide 359,997 meals for the hungry, which is enough to feed 17,141 people 21 meals for one week.

“This generous gift comes at a very critical time for Loaves & Fishes. With the possibility of as many as 16,000 food stamp recipients in Mecklenburg County losing their benefits on April 1, we anticipate a large increase in the number of people needing emergency food help this spring,” said Loaves & Fishes Executive Director Beverly Howard. “The Levine-Sklut Foundation will have a pronounced impact on our ability to provide groceries for everyone who comes to us.”

This is the third year the Levine-Sklut Family Foundation has offered the matching grant, generating a total of $449,038 in donations for Loaves & Fishes.

Eye center moving to Waverly

Home lender enters market

CHARLOTTE – Horizon Eye Care announced plans to close its Arboretum office and relocate to Waverly, a 90-acre project under development at Providence Road and Providence Country Club Drive.

The Arboretum location won’t close until the 8,300-square-foot Kathy Murray office opens in Waverly’s second 22,000square-foot medical building at 11835 Southmore Drive.

Kathy Murray, chief operating officer for Horizon Eye Care, said the move helps the firm better serve its expanding patient base.

Cato Corporation has big year CHARLOTTE – The Cato Corporation reported March 17 net income of $11.8 million for the fourth quarter that ended Jan. 30, an increase from $9.2 reported in January 2015, as well as major milestones.

"In 2015, Cato delivered its highest earnings and earnings per diluted share in company history," CEO John Cato said. "We were also able to achieve over $1 billion in sales, a major milestone for the company."

The company plans to open 23 new stores this year and anticipates closing up to 17, though only one specific store has been identified.

The firm specializes in value-priced fashion apparel and accessories, operating three concepts, "Cato,” “Versona” and "It's Fashion.”

Three legal tips to protect your business

No business owner plans to be on the receiving end of a lawsuit, and scrambling to protect your business after a lawsuit is filed is often too late. Here are three tips to protect your business from legal trouble.

First, whether you run fruit stand on the weekends or a large manufacturing company, make sure you form a formal business entity, like an LLC or a corporation. Creating one of these entities serves a crucial role: protecting your personal finances and property from creditors and lawsuits.

Without an LLC or other similar entity, a disgruntled employee who sues your company will likely be able to take your home, your personal car, or the money in your retirement funds or savings accounts to satisfy any judgment. The simple act of properly creating a business entity shields your personal assets from these types of collection efforts.

Second, a business deal formed through just a handshake is fine—that is, until there’s a future disagreement over the deal.

It’s incredibly important to put all of your agreements in writing. And before you say, “I don’t want or need all that legal mumbo jumbo,” let me agree with you. There’s a huge issue in our society with “over-lawyering” transactions, but, putting just a few important terms down on a piece of paper can save you from a lawsuit.

For every business transaction, make sure

to have in writing at least the following: the parties’ names, the services or products being purchased, the price and payment terms, and signatures and a date. Documenting these simple items can ensure there aren’t any future misunderstandings, and with any complex contract, you should seek experienced legal counsel.

Third, what do seasonal workers, independent contractors, and full-time employees have in common? They all need to sign an employment agreement that protects your business from potential lawsuits, and it gives both you and your workers a written outline of your expectations.

In addition to outlining number of hours worked, pay, benefits, and other terms, a well-crafted agreement can be used to prevent unfair competition. A reasonable non-compete clause can keep your employees from opening a competing business by stealing your clients or contacts, and a confidentiality clause can prevent employees from spilling the beans about your proprietary business practices.

Hearing set for senior housing CHARLOTTE – The hearing for a luxury senior housing project on Randolph Road is set for April 18.

The six-acre site, located between Sloane Square Way and Rutledge Avenue, is used by the Scottish Rite Bodies of Charlotte and a single-family home. Greystar GP II LLC hopes to rezone the property to urban residential to create its vision of 198 active-adult agerestricted units in two buildings.

A three-story building will be no more than 40 feet. A four-story building, which includes a basement, won't exceed 50 feet. Parking will go behind the buildings.

PayPal opening global center CHARLOTTE – PayPal will open a global operations center in Charlotte, creating 400 new jobs and investing $3.6 million by the end of 2017.

PayPal has 179 million active customer accounts that use its digital and mobile payments platform. The San Jose-based firm reported $9.2 billion in revenue for 2015.

Randolph Middle students sweep UNCC math competition Four Randolph Middle Schools swept Math 3 at the University of North Carolina Charlotte Super Competition, as part of a statewide contest organized by the North Carolina Council of Teachers.

About 6,000 students take part in the contest’s four divisions, with three subject area contests (Math 1, 2 and 3) and an open division of comprehensive knowledge.

Timmy Deng, Sreyas Adiraju, Dev Chheda and Olivia Yang took first, second, third and fourth place, respectively. Each qualified for the state runoffs on April 28.

Charlotte Prep teachers to study abroad in Madrid, Finland Lisa Watson and Brandt Boidy, two teachers at Charlotte Preparatory School, were awarded a scholarship from the World Affairs Council of Charlotte to study abroad this summer.

The World Affairs Council of Charlotte awards scholarships each year to educators who provide a global perspective to their classrooms and desire an international experience.

Brandt and Watson submitted an essay application in October and underwent interviews with the council.

Watson will study in Madrid for two weeks with the AmeriSpan’s Maestro program and Brandt will study at the Bridges Conference in Finland.

Alexander Graham Middle band teacher honored with award Alexander Graham Middle School band director Windy Fullagar was named a recipient of the 2016 Arts & Science Council Cato Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award.

The award recognizes creative and effective teachers in art, science or history. She will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a bronze medallion created by North Carolina artist Joanna Gollberg.

She is the fourth CMS teacher to win the award.

South Charlotte students earn top marks in art contest Many south Charlotte students earned Top 3 placements in the North Carolina PTA Reflections contest, from kindergarteners to 12th-graders.

Students were divided into four divisions by age, including primary (kindergarten to second grade), intermediate (third to fifth grade), middle and senior.

Ballantyne Elementary kids to travel on a Google expedition Ballantyne Elementary School will participate in the Google Expedition Pioneer Program on March 28, in which students piloted a new Google Expeditions app.

Google is conducting beta tests of the new app, which will be out to the public at the end of this year, through Google Expeditions Pioneer Program. The program allows elementary students test the app, said Danii Roundtree, Google Expeditions representative.

“We’re coming to the schools to get kids opinions and see how they like,” Roundtree said. “We’re going to use that to finish developing the app.”

Teachers select from more than 150 “expeditions” of real places, including China, Jordan, U.S. monuments and the moon, based upon their curriculums. Instructors flow through slides and 360-degree images of the world’s wonders and point out specific details along the way. Students look through cardboard viewfinders that have small tablets attached, which are synched to the teacher’s tablet.

The program includes talking points at each location, so teachers don’t have to front load any information.

Google will beta test the app in North Carolina through the end of the month and will conclude all beta tests in May. Roundtree also said the app will have sound and video by the end of the year.

Ardrey Kell thanks military families with premade meals

When Ardrey Kell High School senior Carly Scheve joined the school’s Marine Corps JROTC as a freshman, she knew she wanted to help give back to military families through a “thank you” event.

Carly felt inspired to give back to area military after she discovered Switchin' Kitchens in south Charlotte. Switchin' Kitchens creates premade meals that customers can pop in the oven or crockpot and have dinner on the table without any preparation. A friend of Carly’s made a meal at Switchin’ Kitchens for someone else, whose family member passed away.

“I was trying to think of a way to incorporate my JROTC with the project and started to reach out to people,” Carly said.

Carly approached Rachel Basile, the owner of Switchin' Kitchens, with her idea to carry out the project.

Carly hoped the JROTC could make the meals they planned to gift to Operation Homefront, a nonprofit with a mission to support military families.

“I was so impressed that she would think up an idea,” Basile said. “I personally loved giving back to the military and that the kids wanted to be involved.”

Basile’s staff conducted the prep work for the meals, and JROTC cadets assembled

them to be delivered.

JROTC collected money through the school and local businesses to afford the home cooked meals, groceries and gift cards donated from Publix for families of service men and women at the area National Guard base and with Operation Homefront.

Ardrey Kell is in its fourth year of the project with the hope of increasing the number of meals they make each year. For every six meals the JROTC collects money to afford, Switchin’ Kitchens donated one meal. This year’s team had a goal to donate 300 meals.

Col. Robert Wint said seniors always conduct a senior service project and when Carly approached him with the idea, he knew it would be successful.

“We like being a part of the community,” he said. “Ardrey Kell already has a huge service initiative and this is one of our biggest ones.”

Wint said he enjoys that students can see the tangible results of their efforts, and the JROTC has plans to continue the tradition after Carly graduates.

“We do a lot of community service in JRTOC and that’s one of the things I love about it,” Carly said. “I just felt like we had to say, ‘Thank you,’ in some way and I felt this was a great way because this not only shows that we’re thankful and that we care, but it’s also something that (the servicemen

and their families) can enjoy as well.”

Darden Blow, director of programs at Operation Homefront, said many people don’t realize the Carolinas is one of the largest military areas in the country, who have needs that might not be met by military pay.

Operation Homefront provides help to the military with its emergency assistance program, financial assistance, Backpack Brigades, holiday meals, toy distributions, Homes on the Homefront programs and family support programs, among other services.

“Partnering with the MCJROTC at Ardrey Kell for the past four years has been an absolutely amazing process here and program, which we’re proud to be a part of,” Blow said.

He said it’s an “amazing way” for the community to come together and assist local military families that protect the nation’s freedoms. The program helps military families through a morale standpoint and shows the community cares.

“I hope that they see how thankful we are and that we’re always here to support them,” Carly said, “and that we’ll always be here for them.”

The promise of a politician and the hope of Easter

This week I had a unique opportunity to hear four of the five presidential candidates from both political parties live at the American-Israeli Political Action Committee convention in Washington, D.C. What was so interesting about this opportunity was that each candidate clearly knew the agenda of the organization hosting the conference, so each addressed the major issues of concern to conference delegates. These issues concerned the relationship between the United States and Israel, as well as broader concerns about Iran and Isis. In other words, each and every candidate made the same promises to the crowd.

This causes me to think about the concept of a promise. Much has already been written about this election cycle and its game-changing qualities. Voter turnout is higher than it has been in years. Driven by the excitement of the young, the disgust of the old, and the fury of the public in general, a 74-year-old socialist and a 69-yearold high rolling businessman are commanding crowds by the thousands with their promises to mold our nation into their individual visions of what constitutes a “great” America. Again, this causes me to think about the nature of a promise.

Can these grand visions be achieved? What about all those promises made to thousands of groups in thousands of meeting halls like the one I attended this week? Do these politicians have the power to keep these promises? Do they even have

the intention of keeping them? Which individual is most likely to actually achieve what he or she promised?

It was interesting to discuss these questions after the meetings with a diverse group of conference delegates.

The concept of promise, or covenant, Mark Harris is central to the Bible and Christian theology. The Hebrew word “berit,” which can be translated “promise” or “covenant,” occurs 280 times in the Old Testament.

The Jewish Virtual Library describes this concept as “the most profound and brilliant concept of the Hebrew world.” The Greek word “diatheke,” also translated covenant, or testament, is used 33 times in the New Testament. The very words “New Testament” could be also rendered “new covenant” or “new promise.”

To promise something is to assure the one promised that the promise-giver will do, give, or arrange something. Our most important cultural promises are sealed with both rhetoric and ritual. The promise of fidelity in marriage is sealed with the costly, serious, and celebratory ritual of a wedding. A couple makes a series of promises surrounded by family and friends who witness the promise and offer support to the couple as they embark on a life together. A certain social

pressure is, or should be, inherent in the wedding ritual. Your promise has been sealed, or to use the old-fashioned word, solemnized, and you owe it to society to keep it. This promise is important. It is a big, big deal.

Yet today, even our most sacred promises get cast aside all too easily. Is it any wonder that we have an increasingly cynical society? How can I believe a political candidate’s promise when nothing improves? How can I believe in marriage when half the people who marry divorce?

As cynicism has taken hold, sadly, many live without hope and without belief in a God who does keep His promises.

For the believer, Easter is the celebration of the ultimate in God’s promise-keeping: that He would send a Messiah, a Savior, who would suffer, die, and rise the third day, making atonement for our sins and conquering death.

The last acts of Jesus on earth were to make promises. Before His crucifixion, he promised His disciples that if He went away, He would make a way for them to be where He was. On the cross, He promised a thief paradise. After His resurrection He promised that there would be power given from God to follow and serve Him. Before His ascension He promised to be with His followers always, even to the end of the age. He is the groom that is every-faithful, the leader who never disappoints. He is the way, the truth, and the life. Easter reminds us that He is able to fulfill all that He has promised, today, tomorrow, and forever.

Johnson won conference in the 100-yard breaststroke. Johnson swam a leg on South Meck’s conference, regional and state champion 200-yard freestyle relay team, and placed fourth in the state in the 200-yard individual medley and fifth in the state in the 100-yard breastroke.

Murray won the state championship in the 500-yard freestyle, and won the conference and regional in the 100-yard backstroke. Murray swam a leg in South Meck’s conference and regional winning 200-yard medley relay team. He was named coteam MVP and an all-American.

The senior Hawk was integral to the team’s success in his final campaign. Hardy finished runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley at the CISAA conference meet and the NCISAA 3A state championship meet and the 100-yard butterfly at the CISAA meet and the NCISAA 3A state championship meet. He earned team MVP, all-conference and all-state honors.

Cahan won the conference championship in the 200yard individual medley, and conference and regionals in the 100-yard butterfly. He’ll continue swimming at UNC Wilmington.

D’Allaird, a junior, finished runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle at the CISAA meet, but turned around to win the event at the NCISAA 3A state championship (1:45.68). D’Allaird was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke at the CISAA meet and the NCISAA 3A state championship meet (52.77 seconds). He made the all-conference and all-state teams.

Chargers to face major challenge at Dick’s Sporting Goods Nationals

Providence Day’s boys’ basketball team (30-3) will see how it stacks up against the nation’s elite when it takes the court with Montverde Academy (25-1) in the first round of the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament at Christ the King in Middle Village, New York on March 31 at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Providence Day proved it was at the top of the class in the Tar Heel State when it beat High Point Christian Academy, 67-53, in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state championship, but a trip to the Big Apple is a notch up.

“I don’t think any of us ever truly understood that we could achieve it,” Providence Day coach Brian Field said. “It’s been overwhelming.

It’s been a lot of fun. This season’s been unbelievable. To win a state title the way we did was special, but this is an opportunity.

“These guys are going to look back and be 50 years old, sitting around, remembering this time and this opportunity, so it’s really a once in a lifetime thing. Two things I’m really proud of – one, is that great group of kids that worked really hard and are going to get this opportunity and have this life experience that they’re going to remember forever and two, the excitement it has brought to Providence Day is really special for me to see as well.”

Montverde Academy, which has finished ranked No. 1 in the nation in the USAToday and ESPN FAB 50 polls the last three years, and is the defending champion of the Dick’s Sporting Goods National Tournament, will arguably be Providence Day’s greatest test yet.

The Eagles are an athletic, big, deep and well-coached team that features a talented 11-man rotation full of Division I caliber players, including Ohio State signee Micah Potter (6-foot-10 center) and junior guard Marcus Carr, who is rated as a four-star recruit by Scout. com.

Fortunately for the Chargers, Field challenged them with several nationally acclaimed programs – Oak Hill, Mountain Mission, Wesleyan Christian Academy, Word of God Christian Academy, High Point Christian Academy (HPCA), Greensboro Day, Ravenscroft, Greenforest, Wheeler, Norcross and Christ School – during the regular season.

Providence Day met the challenge head on. Senior forwards Grant Williams (Tennessee signee), Josh Howard and Isaac Johnson weren’t afraid to match up with HPCA’s Edrice “Bam” Adebayo, who signed with Kentucky. He exploded for 23 points and 15 re-

bounds in the first meeting, but the Chargers found a way to win.

Williams, Howard and Johnson frustrated and limited Adebayo when it mattered most, holding him to 11 points, nine rebounds and a scoreless first half in the state championship. These guys don’t back down.

Sophomore guard Trey Wertz scored 25 points, pulled down six rebounds and dished out six assists in the title game. However, his most significant contribution came when he moved from shooting guard to run the point in Devon Dotson’s stead after his backcourt mate fouled out.

This team persevered through Dotson’s ankle injury that forced him to miss five games in the middle of the season. Wertz, senior Scott Peterson and sophomore Kyle Wood stepped up to fill that void until he returned to the lineup. The Chargers grew closer and stronger after overcoming that adversity and the litany of challenges it faced this season to reach this point.

“The thing I like about our team is we’re fearless,” Field said. “We respect our opponents, but obviously I think our guys are going to go in there with the attitude that we’re going to play hard and try to win the game. It’s going to take a monumental effort on our part, but I’ve learned not to doubt our team.

“We’re going to go up there with the attitude that we’re going to live in the moment and enjoy the moment and take advantage of everything this trip as to offer us.”

The winner will advance to face the winner of St. Benedict’s (Newark, New Jersey) and La Lumiere (La Porte, Indiana) April 1 at 3 p.m. at Christ the King, and it will be televised on ESPN2. The championship game will be at Madison Square Garden Saturday, April 2, and will be televised on ESPN.

Hardin leaves Independence for Latin after one season

Defensive Coordinator Mike Hawks left a major void at Charlotte Latin when he accepted the offer to become Carolina Pride’s next football coach. This made head coach Larry McNulty’s next hire a significant one, and he made quite the splash that will leave lasting ripples through the greater Charlotte area when Justin Hardin decided to leave his post as Independence’s head coach and join him as the Hawks next defensive coordinator.

Hardin returns to Latin after serving as the Hawks wide receivers coach from 2007 to 2009. Latin won the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state championship and finished with a 13-0 record in Hardin’s first season.

“Justin and I have had a real strong relationship for a long time,” McNulty said.

“He coached with me for a while, and we stayed in contact wherever he went. We talked quite often. I had called four or five college programs trying to see if there was an assistant that wanted to get into high school coaching, and I wasn’t making much headway.

“I decided to call Justin and say, ‘Hey, do you know anybody that would be good, that would fill what I’m looking for, and somebody you’d recommend?’ and he said,

‘Well, I’d be really interested.’ I jumped at that situation. I couldn’t be more excited to have Justin back at the school and back in the program. I think the world of him as a young person, and he’s a wonderful coach.”

McNulty said Hardin has not been hired to be the coach-in-waiting, but will be a strong candidate for the head job once he retires.

Hardin, who played quarterback at the Citadel, brings a vast repertoire of experience and knowledge to Latin’s staff. He led the Patriots to an 8-5 (5-1 Southwestern 4A) record and a second round appearance in the state playoffs in one season at Independence.

Hardin, who has a 40-25 career record as a head coach, also has served as the head coach at Providence and Weddington. He took both schools to the playoffs.

It has yet to be determined how, but Hardin also will contribute in coaching on the offensive side of the ball too.

“It ended up being a tough decision,” Hardin said. “The Independence family has been great to me. I enjoyed this past year.

It’s hard to believe it’s been one year already.

When it came down to it, it was an opportunity, but it also was a family decision for me.

I’m looking forward to the future.”

Hardin wants to be a head coach again some day, but said he’s young and enjoys learning. McNulty has been one of his

coaching mentors, which gives him the chance to learn and grow under the tutelage of someone he reveres.

“We have a great relationship,” Hardin said. “I don’t have an ego as a coach. If I’m a coordinator or a head coach it’s always about the kids for me, and that’s what made this decision tough, because you never want to disappoint or upset kids.

“As far as a person and as a coach I really put a lot into building relationships with kids, but also sometimes you have to step back and make decisions for yourself.

That’s tough sometimes and it’s hard, but you have coaching goals and personal and family goals. That’s one of the reasons I’ve made this decision.”

Hardin joins Latin after the Hawks reached the NCISAA Division I state championship and finished with an 8-4 (1-3 CISAA) record, so expectations are high.

His return will only increase expectations, and provide the program with fresh energy.

“Putting him together with the staff I have, I’m pleased with the guys I have now,” McNulty said. “Adding him to the mix we’re going to have an amazing amount of experience. We’re going to have to sit down together as a staff to figure out where everybody fits. Everybody is so experienced that we can move guys all over the place for the betterment of the kids.

Pogo came to the shelter on December 20th. He was extremely malnourished and suffered from significant hair loss. With much love and care from the shelter staff and his former foster home, Pogo has gained weight and his skin continues to clear up nicely. Pogo is a sweet, cuddly little fellow--- social and affectionate. At 36 lbs he is a great small size for a pit mix. He appears to be kennel trained and walks on leash nicely. And those eyes!!!! Pogo loves to play with toys and will gladly retrieve toys over and over again.

He also loves to play tug and is a total clown when he shakes his toy back and forth and throws it in the air. Pogo has gotten along with other dogs here at the shelter and would be a great dog for a family with older kids. VIP: Only $10 to adopt!
