Drive ban begins April 30

SOUTHPARK – Days after the Urban Land Institute deemed the SouthPark area lacking in pedestrian, bicycle and road connections, Charlotte declared a ban of all vehicular traffic, effective April 30.

Roads within a five-mile radius of SouthPark Mall will be restriped into much smaller bike lanes, while abandoned cars alongside streets will be used for affordable and workforce housing.

Residents in neighboring towns are begging the city to reconsider, even encouraging state lawmakers to intervene with an emergency session to overturn the ban.

“We want to see how this plays out,” said a Raleigh lawmaker wearing a “Charlotte sucks” pin on his lapel.

Charlotte unveils marketing campaign

CHARLOTTE – The city has launched a new marketing campaign to recruit and retain business. It’s called “Boycott North Carolina, Not Charlotte.”

It’s aimed at people publicly trying to financially cripple the state after lawmakers overturned Charlotte’s pro-LGBT bathroom ordinance. The actor who portrayed Meathead on “All in the Family” is among those calling to flush the state economy into the toilet.

“Sha-Sha-Charlotte is part of North Carolina,” say several nervous business folks, noting that boycotting an entire state means hurting cities that encourage diversity.

The Haven not safe from growth stigma

A proposal putting 360 townhomes above restaurants and boutique shops along Park Road could be at risk as city leaders struggle to keep up with the rapidly redeveloping Park-Woodlawn corridor.

Johnson Development Associates has asked the city to rezone five acres on the Pfeiffer University campus. Renderings for The Haven show a six-story building with 17,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, 360 townhomes and a wrapped parking deck.

Staff supports the request because it promotes mixed uses with ground-floor commercial, supports walkability, adds to street connectivity and reduces surface parking lots, according to Assistant Planning Director Laura Harmon.

No one from the community spoke against the project during a March 21 public hearing, but the city council used the forum to vent on development issues, such as walkability and workforce housing.

The Haven is located near five redevelopment projects proposed or approved in Park-Woodlawn since 2014, with as many as 1,500 dwelling units in the pipeline, Harmon said.

“Not to pick on this project, but I’m really struggling with this whole corridor,” councilmember Julie Eiselt said. “There’s so much redevelopment going on and rezoning. I don’t see how it’s that much more walkable. It’s kind of a nightmare to walk in right now anyway.”

Eiselt and Vi Lyles were among three city council members to attend the Urban Land Institute’s presentation regarding SouthPark, in which development experts said the region lacked good sidewalk, bike lane and road connections among projects. They brought up connectivity concerns with Jeff Brown, an attorney representing Johnson Development Associates during the public hearing.

Brown said the project fits with the city’s Park Woodlawn Area Plan approved in June 2013, and that it puts the infrastructure in place as the

neighborhood continues to redevelop.

Site plans not only modify turn lanes and add a private street to the eastern portion of the property, but also put sidewalks and planting strips along Park Road and Mockingbird Lane.

Other transportation upgrades include more on-street parking, a pad for a bus stop on Park Road and $25,000 toward a traffic signal at Mockingbird Lane and Park Road.

Still, city council was skeptical of so many apartments being added to the area.

District 3 councilmember LaWana Mayfield questioned whether the project truly embodied walkability, when people living in the townhomes will travel to go to work. That’s because the commercial aspects of the project relate to retail – jobs that command more hourly wages than salaries.

The project doesn’t include any workforce housing, which bothered City Councilmember Claire Fallon. The city doesn’t require workforce housing, but offers incentives.

District 7 Councilmember Ed Driggs cautioned colleagues to be careful when talking about affordable housing so members don’t give the impression that zoning decisions depend on it.

“The point in fact is we are apartmenting Charlotte,” Fallon said. “If we are apartmenting Charlotte to the extent we are, something has to come back for regular people who cannot afford $1,600 a month rent.”

District 6 Councilmember Kenny Smith agreed workforce housing is a worthy policy discussion, but he feels talking about it during individual zoning hearings is inappropriate.

Smith said the council needs to discuss zoning projects based on their merits. He believes concerns such as walkability and traffic are more legitimate in this case than the potential for workforce housing units.

“The right thing for the developer to do is to bring good land use,” Smith said. “It’s not social engineering.”

News Briefs Levine Foundation awards $100K grant to Brookstone Brookstone Schools is the recipient of a challenge grant from the Leon Levine Foundation, which pledged $100,000 in matching funds to the school for the expansion of programming and classrooms for the 2016-17 school year.

Gifts from donors and increased gifts from current supporters will be matched dollar for dollar through May 31.

“We are honored to partner with The Leon Levine Foundation to provide a life-changing, holistic education for at-risk children,” said Brookstone Schools Head of School Steve Hall in a release. “Through this gift, more students in Charlotte will receive a quality education and strong moral foundation that will lead to future lives of leadership and service.”

Brookstone Schools is a nonprofit school in uptown Charlotte that serves 145 disadvantaged urban youth in kindergarten through eighth grade. Eighty-seven percent of students qualify for reduced or free lunch. Parents pay a small, affordable portion of tuition, leaving Brookstone to raise more than 90 percent of its operating costs from outside sources.

Village at Robinson Farm Market opens for season April 9 The Village at Robinson Farm farmers market will open for the season April 9 and remain open every Saturday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 29. Ecolab closing SouthPark office Just four months after acquiring Charlottebased Swisher Hygiene, Ecolab has shared plans with the state commerce department to close its Piedmont Row Drive office and lay off as many as 60 employees.

Those who aren’t offered opportunities to relocate or work remotely will be let go in phases starting in May, according to a letter from Jennifer Swanson, vice president of human resources for Ecolab.

The Minnesota-based company announced plans in August 2015 to acquire U.S. operations of Swisher Hygiene for about $40 million. The deal closed in November 2015.

While Ecolab specializes in water, hygiene and energy technologies and services, Swisher Hygiene focused on hygiene and sanitizing solutions for the food service, hospitality, retail and healthcare markets.

Car washes benefit nonprofits Autobell Car Wash’s Charity Car Wash Program helped raise $634,398 last year for charities and schools in the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia.

Autobell provides nonprofits with car wash tickets custom-printed with the organization’s name. Fundraisers keep half the proceeds from ticket sales.

The program has helped nonprofits raise more than $7.6 million since 1998.

“It eliminates the need for organizers to plan and execute a parking lot car wash or other large-scale fundraiser, worry about rain dates or incur any upfront cost,” Autobell CEO Chuck Howard said.

Old wives’ (and husbands’) tales Misconceptions in N.C. family law

There are many misconceptions regarding the laws of any state. Here are some of the most common myths related to family law in North Carolina: I want a legal separation: Legal separations are not documents in N.C. An individual is “legally separated” when one spouse moves from the marital residence and at least one spouse intends to remain separate and apart indefinitely.

I want to file for separation: Spouses may enter into a Separation Agreement to resolve all issues arising out of the parties’ separation, but that document is not “filed” anywhere.

We are separated since we live in separate rooms: In N.C., a couple is separated only when they are living in separate residences with the intent to remain separate and apart indefinitely.

I will take her/him for everything (s)he has: Sorry, but alimony is based on disposable income of the supporting spouse after accounting for their reasonable needs and expenses in keeping with the standard of living enjoyed by the parties prior to the separation. Education Briefs Carmel Middle teacher to travel on National Geographic trip Carmel Middle School band director Nicholas Gattis will embark on an 11day voyage later this year as one of the 35 selected members of the 2016 Lindbald Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellows.

The program is a Nicholas Gattis professional development opportunity that allows teachers to bring “immersive geographic learning experiences back to their classrooms and communities,” ac-

Gattis serves as an Arts and Science Council cultural arts representative and district representative for the North Carolina Bandmasters Mentor Committee.

Gattis will journey aboard the National Geographic Explorer to a circumnavigation of Iceland, as well as participate in hands-on workshops covering photography and outreach in Washington, D.C. Country Day students honored at Mint Museum, Scholastic awards Charlotte Country Day School students have an artistic spirit and their talents were recognized this month.

Myers Park High’s DECA Club shines at state competition

Twins Natalie and Nathan Brown, members of Girl Scout Troop 1115 and Boy Scout Pack 34, recently earned their respective Girl Scout Gold and Boy Scout Eagle awards through a partnership with the North Carolina Wildlife Federation.

The two projects focused on conservational awareness with the construction of wood duck nesting boxes, installation of the boxes into Lake Norman and providing materials to ensure educational sustainability.

The duo spent more than 100 hours working with more than 60 area Scouts and several wildlife organizations.

Myers Park High School’s DECA Club dominated the state DECA competition at the 2016 Career Development Conference earlier this month.

Myers Park took more than 100 students to the competition, with 24 bringing home trophies.

Students competed in a variety of competitions, including individual and team business scenario role-play events, while some students presented projects that required a written paper and an oral presentation.

First-place finishers included Abby Levinson and Marley Nelson in business service operations research event; Tyler Grier and Eron Lutterman in fashion merchandising promotion plan; Connor Speizman in independent business plan; and Milan Nocakovic and Marissa Patel entrepreneurship promotion project.

CMS unveils $805 million bond for November ballot

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is looking to place an $805 million bond on November’s ballot with about $266 million of the bond going to District 5 and 6 schools.

Superintendent Ann Clark opened up a work session with the CMS Board of Education on March 22 to discuss a prioritized list of 29 projects that district staff wishes to fund with a bond.

Clark said the projects on the bond were in response to the needs of the community with more than 80 percent of the district’s 10-year needs regarding maintaining current facilities and building new schools both to relieve overcrowding.

CMS, on average, receives about $200 million per year through capital allotments, whether from bonds or COPs, but board members are looking to press county commissioners for a higher price tag after what they say is years of neglecting the district’s capital needs.

‘A lack of progress’ During the March 22 meeting, Clark shared a video of Mark Elgart, AdvancED CEO, who led a review of CMS’s accreditation, discussing the need for CMS to address its capital needs.

He asserted the district has been aware of its long-range capital needs for the past 15 years, but hasn’t addressed them. The lack of progress now impedes children’s education and health due to a lack of proper facilities.

At-large member Elyse Dashew attested to that notion, describing children sitting on lab tables rather than desks in schools with overcrowding.

Elgart pushed to “accelerate� the timeline for capital needs and start narrowing the gap between high-need and low-need schools, as well as expanding choices for families. “I think you see schools in dire need of replacement and you need to heed the creation of seats based on the realities of today,�

Clark said. â€œâ€ŚI think what we need to do is to open up families to getting what they need – whether it’s closer to home or on a longer bus ride.â€?

Clark believes the projects on the capital bond look to address the needs the community has, as well as what the community has asked for.

The top priority projects look to provide relief to overcrowded schools through new facilities or additional classrooms.

Clark said new facilities could potentially “put a dent� in the number of mobile classrooms in Mecklenburg County, which not only have caused overcrowding issues, but facility issues. District 5 member Eric Davis pointed to the consequences of mobile class-

rooms during the most recent winter storm, which caused CMS to keep its doors closed because there was ice on the ramps leading to mobile classrooms.

Side-by-side student assignment District 6 member Paul Bailey believes the capital bond and the new student assignment plan need to “mesh� or the bond might not pass on the ballot.

He said his constituents are pushing for CMS to declare the retention of neighborhood schools, but might not see the capital plan, which predominantly seeks to facilitate projects in District 2, as means to keep their home schools. “Asking for bond funding without having some direction with student assignment, you’re just going to have disconnect,� Bailey said. “People are imagining the worst.�

Clark said she believes the capital bond projects could help carry out the student assignment plan better because it seeks to provide expanded school choices – one of the plan’s goals. “I think it addresses the needs that we have, even if we weren’t doing student assignment,� Clark said. “I think we would want to continue to increase the options families have and make sure they’re geographically distributed.�

Parents from the southern part of the district are wondering what the bond package could mean for Districts 5 and 6.

Of the 29 projects, approximately four will be in District 5, two in District 6 and one for both District 5 and 6. Projects include Collinswood Language Academy moving to the Smith Family Center; a new high school in south Charlotte to alleviate overcrowding at Ardrey Kell and South Mecklenburg high schools; a new elementary school to alleviate overcrowding at Bain and Lebanon Road elementary schools; a new facility for Montclaire Elementary; additional classrooms at Sharon Elementary and Community House Middle schools; and renovations at South Meck, among others.

Clark said no land has been pinned down for new facilities, but she wanted to start selling off surplus property last fall to make room for new land choices, so if the bond passed, the district could move into the design phase quicker.

Daniel definitely wasn’t Italian

I grew up with two versions of the “four food groups.” The one taught in schools included: bread, potatoes, rice; fruits and vegetables; meat, fish, eggs; and milk and dairy.

My four food groups were different.

Being Italian, my grandmother taught us her version of the “four food groups.” They consisted of meatballs, sausage, cheese and lasagna. Notice, it included meat, cheese, and pasta.

You can imagine my dismay when a coworker challenged me to try the Daniel fast for the Christian season of Lent. It is taken from the Biblical story when Daniel refuses to eat the King’s food. The King allows him to eat his food while his subjects eat the King’s food. When it is obvious that Daniel is in better shape than the King’s people, everyone eats this healthy diet.

A year ago, I gave up artificially sweetened beverages for Lent. It was harder than I thought, because I drank a lot of it. For the first three weeks, I was like an alcoholic going through detox. I drank water and missed my sweetened beverage. After a few weeks, I no longer missed it. When Lent was over, I continued drinking water, and still do to this day.

The Daniel fast asked me to give up everything that was Italian. There was no sausage, no

meatballs and no cheese. I found myself going back to my childhood eating what my family called, “Depression Era” meals (my parents grew up in the Depression). Not wanting to deprive my wife of this “fast,” I convinced Rev. Tony Marciano her to join me.

What did we eat? Lentils and salad – more lentils than I want to admit.

By day five, I missed chicken. My wife missed cheese. We did a 10-day Daniel diet, and were proud we achieved that. We decided to do the Daniel diet Monday to Friday, and “cheat” on the weekend. I found that when I ate meat and cheese on the weekend, it wasn’t as satisfying as the anticipation of eating it.

There were other things I gave up for Lent, but they weren’t cake and cookies as I did when I was a kid.

Instead, I gave up living in the past. I stopped scratching old wounds and hurts. I don’t wonder what I could have done differently if I had the chance to do it all over again. It’s in the past and I can’t change that.

I gave up playing the victim. I realize when bad things happened to me, God didn’t say,

I worked on being grateful. It’s hard to be negative when you are thanking God for waking you up and giving you another chance at life.

I worked on my procrastination. I took on home repair projects I’ve avoided for years.

When I tackled them, they weren’t as difficult as I was afraid they would be.

I took on smiling more. I knew that my mood – good or bad – affects the people I lead.

I learned to reconnect with one of my passion, including great music. I heard a band with brass instruments. It resonated deeply within me.

Whether we are in the church season of Lent, we should strive to become better people. Give up those destructive habits that keep us from becoming all that God would have us to be, while taking on those things that make us a better person.

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Knights’ baseball maintains championship expectations despite youth

The “young Charlotte Christian Knights” certainly has a ring to it, but the jury is still out on whether that ring is good or bad.

Charlotte Christian still has a target on its back, and will get its opponents’ best shot each time it steps on the diamond. That’s nothing new though for a program that is coming off its 14th state championship.

However, coach Greg Simmons, who is in his 24th year at the helm, is taking the Knights into unchartered territory after losing a seven-man senior class that was a part of four state titles.

It doesn’t matter who you are or what your program has accomplished – it’s always a challenge to replace great talent, especially veteran leaders who played key roles and are all playing at the collegiate level.

Simmons has guided Charlotte Christian to 13 state championships during his tenure, but this is the first time since 1998 he hasn’t had a senior in the top four spots of his batting order. In fact, this is the first time in 27 years the Knights have had juniors instead of seniors serve as team captains.

“This is the youngest we’ve been in a long, long time,” Simmons said. “We lost a really good senior class that had a lot of legacy, and they left some things behind. These guys are trying to figure out that this is their team now, and it’s taking them a little while to do that.

“You’re starting to see these guys take the bull by the horns. We’re relying on these young guys to do some special stuff. We tell our guys a lot that they didn’t earn the name on their chest, the guys before them did. It’s their job to earn that name on their chest, and they want to leave a legacy behind.”

Simmons and his assistant coaches aren’t into popularity contests, so they always choose the team captains. Juniors Trey Donathan, a catcher, and Miles Gary, a pitcher/outfielder, emerged as the leaders he and his staff entrusted those roles to, and they are stewarding them well.

“I think they’ve worked hard, and they deserve it,” Simmons said. “I like that they’re leaders. They’re good kids, and they work hard. The seniors are a great group of guys, but these two guys are

pretty special.”

The Knights showed toughness and maturity when they weathered the storm at Myers Park in the Jack Sink Easter Tournament.

They overcame a late run by the Mustangs to win 6-4 March 28.

“It kind of brings us together, so we always have to know that we can come together and get a good win,” Gary said.

Donathan added this is the type of game that will help the Knights later in the season if and when they’re trailing, because they know they have been down before and found a way to battle back to win, adding that Gary’s fastball dominated the Myers Park hitters.

“He throws it hard, so it gives us a little boost when he comes in

in the later innings,” Donathan said.

The Knights have several other young players coming up through the ranks who have provided significant contribution this season, and will be expected to do so as the year goes on.

Charlotte Christian started freshman J.T. Killen in its 5-3 win over Hickory Ridge the next day. Simmons couldn’t remember the last time he put a freshman on the mound.

Junior left fielder/second baseman Nicholas Murrer has contributed at a high level so far. Sophomore shortstop Jonah Beamon, a South Carolina commit, bats in the No. 2 hole, and leads the team in hitting.

Pitcher Jonathan Jagielski has been stellar on the mound. He’s Charlotte Christian’s No. 1 hurler as a sophomore, which speaks to the team’s youth, but more to his talent and hard work.

If there’s an area for improvement, though, it’s on the mound – especially when it comes to throwing strikes and pitching to contact.

Charlotte Christian opens CISAA play when it hosts Charlotte Latin on Tuesday, April 5 for a 7 p.m. tilt. This is the most competitive the CISAA has been in a long time, but the Knights are still at the top of the conference until someone knocks them off their perch.

“The parity is really good,” Simmons said. “There’s some great players. Covenant Day’s the best I’ve seen. David (Houseton) does a great job. Country Day’s very good. They’ve got a great arm on the mound. Latin, they’re better than I’ve seen them in years. Providence Day’s really good. I heard Cannon School has some good arms too, but that makes it fun.”

Simmons loves a good challenge, and that’s worked as a trickledown effect to his teams for years. It appears to be happening again this season.

If the Knights can persevere through a rigorous slate of league games after a difficult nonconference schedule, then they might have what it takes to make another state championship run. The talent appears to be there. It just needs experience, which it will have plenty of by the end of the regular season.

Gary said the goal is to still win the state championship.

“We’re young, but we expect to win just like last year,” Gary said.

Providence baseball moves on from season’s first loss

Providence’s baseball team sustained its first loss of the season when it fell at home to defending N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state champion Marvin Ridge, 1-0, in the Smoothie King Queen City Classic March 28 after the Panthers won the first meeting, 2-0, March 4.

“We messed up some things defensively in the seventh, which cost us the game,” Providence coach Danny Hignight said. “If we do things properly, which mistakes are going to happen, we’re probably going to play till Tuesday morning.

It was that kind of a game.

“We probably learn better from losses than wins. Typically, when you’re just beating people, you just think you’re really good. Sometimes you lose focus on the little things.

That wasn’t the case (in our loss to Marvin Ridge) by no means, but it definitely opens your eyes to some things we screwed up in the seventh that we could be better at.”

This loss is only a small aberration for a Panthers team that turned around to beat Butler, 14-6, March 29 in what was a rematch of the state semifinals Providence won during its title run last season.

Providence (12-1, 6-0 So. Meck 8) remains the favorite to win the conference, and one of the top contenders in its quest to defend its state championship crown.

Hignight has several players who have been through the gauntlet of league play and a state championship push, so these guys aren’t strangers to big games or tough competition.

The Panthers returned a bevy of talent, including senior shortstop/pitcher Logan Davidson (Clemson commit), senior center fielder/pitcher Tucker Jones (NCHSAA 2015 State Championship Series MVP), senior third baseman/ pitcher Jake Holtzapple (North Carolina commit), senior pitcher/right fielder Zach Brown and senior second base-

man Satchel Jerzembeck.

Hignight had few concerns going into the season. He was confident in his team’s ability to swing the bats and run the bases, but he knew it needed to improve on defense, especially pitching.

The Panthers lacked experience on the mound. Davidson had thrown a handful of innings, and Brown was coming off an injury. They have been solid for Providence thus far, but sophomore right-hander Tim Townsend might be the team’s next ace rising through the ranks.

He’s a three-pitch guy, who doesn’t let the moment get too big for him. He pitches well to contact, and trusts his defense to back him.

“He sinks it so much, he misses so many barrels with his delivery,” Hignight said. “He does a really good job doing that. He’s extremely competitive for a sophomore. He keeps us in games.”

The Panthers jump back into league play when they visit Charlotte Catholic (8-5, 4-2 So. Meck 8) Tuesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. This will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams after Providence won two out of the three games against the Cougars last season.

Providence claims a two-game advantage in the So. Meck 8 standings over Catholic, which is in a four-way tie for second place with Olympic, South Meck and Ardrey Kell.

Janelle Bailey Providence Day Providence Day junior forward Janelle Bailey was a dominating force in the paint during the Chargers title run. Bailey, who claims several scholarship offers from Division I programs, averaged 16.8 ppg and 8.8 rpg this season. She made the all-conference and all-state teams.

Chanin Scott Myers Park Senior wing Chanin Scott is a Kentucky signee. The triple-sport athlete averaged 16.7 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 2.9 apg, 2.8 spg and 1.7 bpg.

She recorded 21 double doubles this season, and made the allconference team, all-district first team and all-state second team.

Scott was named Southwestern 4A Conference Player of the Year.

Kerstie Phills Charlotte Christian Senior guard Kerstie Phills averaged 20.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg, three spg and 1.9 apg. Phills, who is receiving strong interest from Rider and Longwood, earned all-conference and all-state honors. She finished her high school career with more than 1,700 points, 600 rebounds, 300 steals and 200 assists.

A’Lea Gilbert South Meck Sophomore forward A’Lea Gilbert is arguably the area’s most improved player. She morphed from a role player last season into an elite goto force for the Sabres this season. Gilbert averaged 17 ppg, 10 rpg and two spg on her way to all-conference and all-district honors.

Second Team Providence Day senior forward Erin Whalen was the cornerstone for the Chargers’ seventh straight state championship run. Whalen averaged 17.6 ppg and 5.6 rpg on her way to all-conference and all-state honors. The Vanderbilt signee was named N.C. Gatorade Player of the Year.
