South Mecklenburg Alliance for Responsible Taxpayers (SMART), a nonpartisan group formed in 2011 out of a frustration with Charlotte and Mecklenburg County’s reliance on south Charlotte to fund center city interests, will mobilize their efforts with a one-day political leadership school taught by the Foundation for Applied Conservative Leadership (FACL).

Review

STOMP arrives at Knight Theater with a bang

If you’re looking for an inimitable experience of unique songs and precise choreography, “STOMP” is for you.

“STOMP” originated 25 years ago in the United Kingdom as a result of a 10-year collaboration between its creators, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. Since then, the performances have traveled around the world and onto multiple networks, award shows and film festivals. Today, it’s landed in the Knight Theater of the Levine Center for the Arts.

“STOMP” takes commonplace items and makes a magical musical experience that takes audiences back to their childhood days of banging on pots – although I never sounded as good as these performers.

Percussionists and dancers create an elaborate song and dance appropriate for all ages. They used items, such as matchboxes, sticks, buckets, trashcans and lids, newspapers and their own bodies to create a unique experience with minimal dialogue, but plenty of hilarious moments.

The show features a particular scene in which one of the performers uses newspapers to create various “characters” and images that was my favorite part of the show.

Because of its history, “STOMP” is a show that many people have heard of, but might not have seen live. They might wonder if it’ll all just be clanging and loud noise (cue, the 3-year-old child banging on pots again). Instead, the show provides an unexpected depth to the “everyday man.”

Throughout the show, performers used props and

body language to create a story and characters of the common man’s life, such as dishwashers at a restaurant or as a janitor sweeping. Audiences felt engaged in moments taken from every day life, as the performers created brilliant pictures on the stage with chaotic fervor.

The show’s copyrighted set also added to the wild notion with various items attached to the “walls” of the two-level stage. During the show, members suspended from tight ropes to “play” the items, creating an iron jungle-like scene.

Performers demonstrated a precise cohesiveness and unity that was necessary in creating the magic on stage, and, in turn, helped develop a sense of community.

That community feeling extended to the audience with great participation through clapping and stomping that brought an attitude of “anyone can do it.” I can’t help but wonder if half the audience tapped on their coffee cups this morning to create an encore.

STOMP was an entertaining, but loud, experience that made me laugh throughout the show. Some sensitive ears might not appreciate the excess noise, as I watched a few members surrounding me cover their ears at certain moments. However, I felt the chaotic calamity produced an array of unique melodies.

Any age could enjoy the show, and, even if they don’t notice the imagery, they can appreciate the “banter” between performers and the music. It’s the show you’re heard about; you just need to try it.

Blumenthal Performing Arts will host “STOMP” until April 10 with multiple performances on April 9 and 10.

• The nature of politics and why educating the populous won’t result in change; • The biggest lie in politics, and how the political class uses your convictions against you; • How to work effectively at the Capitol and get a bill sponsored; and • How to build a group and put pressure on legislators.

The goal, said SMART member Tim Timmerman, is to “get people off the bleachers� through organization.

FACL instructors have worked with organizations such as National Right to Work Committee and National Association for Gun Rights, as well as campaigns from the local level up to the federal level. Timmerman hopes the course will help turn the frustration some south Charlotte residents feel toward center city into action.

The meeting is timely given recent concern with the CMS school board and their lack of public stance on retaining neighborhood schools in the upcoming student assignment plans. More than 1,000 parents, along with SMART members, met at Carmel Baptist Church in February to encourage school board members to retain neighborhood schools.

Hundreds gathered at last week’s Ballantyne Breakfast Club meeting, including Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor, expressing similar concerns.

SMART, which argues center city views south Charlotte as an ATM that provides tax dollars for projects elsewhere, continues to explore possible de-annexation from Charlotte and the formation of a town south of center city, as well as possible de-annexation from Mecklenburg County. The formation of a new county would result in a new school district.

John Powell is a member of SMART who helped organize the FACL conference. He hopes the leadership school, which he said is generating a lot of interest, will serve as a way for frustrated and concerned taxpayers to realize they have a voice and how to use that voice alongside others by turning passion into action. “The goal with everything we do is always freedom of choice,� Powell said.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Conference slated for April 22 Child and Family Development, alongside Charlotte Area Health Education Center, will present a day-long conference on April 22, focused on understanding the neurological difference that research identified between people with autism and those without.

Developer tweaks 36-acre Providence Road project The city granted NR Pinehurst Property Owners LLC permission to change its site plan for the redevelopment of Pinehurst Apartments on Providence Road.

The property will have up to 580 units on 36 acres between Cloister Drive and Knob Oak Lane.

Changes included setbacks, a screened parking deck and how the building looks to pedestrians along Providence Road.

Charlotte City Councilman Kenny Smith said the site plan represents a tremendous improvement on aesthetics since it first came to the city.

“This was an architectural change for the most part and one that I think is much more agreeable with the surrounding neighborhood and in keeping with the Providence Road corridor,” Smith said.

Birkdale Village, will celebrate the opening of its second store April 16. The store is located at 7918 Rea Road.

“We don’t have an alternate or replacement location but we do have a plan – a very detailed plan – for how we’re going to help our third busiest branch get through 12 months of being closed,” CEO Lee Keesler told Mecklenburg commissioners on March 16. “Unfortunately, the amount of renovation makes it impractical to stay open.”

The Myers Park and Scaleybark branches, as well as South County Regional, will pick up the slack while Morrison is closed. Its storytime programming will move to Sharon and Carmel Presbyterian churches.

The library consists of 24,108 square feet. The project could increase that up to 2,600 feet.

Childress Klein is moving forward on two projects that city leaders say will represent SouthPark in terms of more walkable community with multi-use development.

The projects will include a 750-seat church for Sharon United Methodist, 690 residential units, a hotel, shops, office space and other amenities.

Senior housing could go in some of the units.

Not only will the project provide critical access around SouthPark with the connection of Coltsgate Road and Morrison Boulevard, but it also would allow the faith community to continue to integrate in the neighborhood, City Councilman Kenny Smith said.

“This is going to be transformational in the SouthPark area,” Smith said.

Education Briefs South Charlotte schools advance to state competition Area students sat down to computers on March 21 to respond to on-demand writing prompts for The Quill, a writing competition by the North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities.

Prompts covered the core curriculum types of argumentation, problem/solution, narrative writing (middle school), creative writing (high school), informative/explanatory (middle school) and literary analysis (high school).

Schools were divided into east and west divisions to advance to the state competition on April 23. Myers Park High School advanced from the west regional high schools and Jay M. Robinson and Randolph middle schools from the west regional middle schools.

After writing in the competition, students will be treated to speaker Tommy Hays, lecturer at UNC Asheville and author of “What I Came to Tell You.”

Charlotte Catholic hosts STEM luncheon for underclassmen Charlotte Catholic High School chemistry teacher Ivana O’Kelly wanted to give students a chance to engage with STEM professionals, so she hosted the STEM Career Lunch and Learn event on March 18.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant time to serve their communities and their country.

Jules volunteered up to four hours each week at the Jewish Community Center of Temple Israel, assisting the temple’s kindergarten teacher and helping coordinate youth field trips. She also volunteers at Bright Blessings, a nonprofit that provides birthday celebrations for homeless and impoverished youth.

“Jules is a fine example of the many students who are making remarkable contributions to their communities. We are so proud of her,” Principal Lisa Bailes, who nominated Jules for the honor, said in a release.

Carmel Christian student wins spelling bee

CMS board to move forward with critical policies next week

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education (BOE) has a lot on its plate next week, with many decisions coming to a head on April 12.

Multiple long-awaited decisions and discussions, which are mostly intermingled, are coming throughout the month that will set vital policies in motion for CMS.

Keeping neighbors

Parents might finally receive a look at the district’s future student assignment guidelines at the board’s April 12 regular meeting.

The guiding principles have been a point of contention for the past few months.

Some parents call for the guidelines to retain neighborhood schools – a provision in the current guidelines – while others push for the board to break up the high concentrations of low-income students.

The former’s request fell on deaf ears when the board approved goals without the neighborhood schools provision in February.

Members said the goals aren’t prescriptive, but more of a pathway to establishing the guidelines, which would be more specific.

Because the BOE didn’t take any stance on neighborhood schools, local municipalities – namely Matthews – have started looking at options to leave the district. Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor formed a task force of eight inaugural members in late March and met with the Ballantyne Breakfast Club on April 2 to discuss their next steps.

N.C. Rep. Bill Brawley and BOE member Paul Bailey fielded questions from a concerned audience, who said they didn’t trust the school board. Brawley said he would support a bill to form a city school district if it was the best option for students.

The board also solicited public input through a student assignment survey, which shows proximity, choice and school environment as top priorities; however, despite CMS’s efforts to make the survey accessible to all districts, staff said some districts were overrepresented. Superintendent Ann Clark said the survey results were just one piece of data to determine the guidelines.

Since the Policy Committee revealed the results of the survey, the committee has looked at alignments between the current guiding principles and the newly established goals in order to look for gaps between them as paths for improvement.

Clark said district staff reviewed the information from the policy committee’s meeting and plans to bring a draft of the guiding principles for discussion to the April 12 meeting to move the process forward.

The BOE will decide in May whether they plan to move forward with creating guidelines in time for a 2017-18 assignment, or wait another year.

A new leader’s future

More than a year after Heath Morrison resigned as superintendent, the BOE will take concrete steps toward finding a permanent replacement through confirming a search firm.

Former CMS board member Trent Merchant met with board members last month to finalize a timeline to hire a search firm, which included forming a superintendent search committee, submitting an RFI to the public and meeting with finalist firms.

The BOE is set to announce its selection of a search firm partner as an informational item at its April 12 meeting, according to the timeline.

The school board will interview superintendent search firms before the April 12 meeting in a public special session at 3:30 p.m.

CMS received RFIs from eight companies interested in conducting the search, as of mid-March.

The BOE hired PROACT Search last time the board conducted a search in 2011 and paid a little more than $60,000, but Merchant told board members in early March to not focus on the cost of the search firm, but its quality and value.

PROACT Search came under fire in 2015 after its CEO Gary Solomon was forced out of his former school for alleged inappropriate conduct and alleged use of racial slurs.

BOE members might not select a finalist until after the April 12 regular board meeting, due to a lack of time after the special session.

“I think by our timeline – I know our timeline is flexible on student assignment – April 12 was when we were trying to get the (student assignment) policy completed,” BOE member Eric Davis said. “In April, we got to get it done … we definitely need to respond to our constituents. County commissioners spoke at their meeting on April 5 and said they will probably reject the bond when it comes to them, citing that the BOE hasn’t used all the funds for the 2013 bond and potential state actions that could impede the county budget.

Clark also plans to present the superintendent’s budget at the April 12 meeting.

April 12 at 6 p.m.: Board of Education Regular Meeting Board to vote on capital plan and discuss search firms, superintendent’s budget and student assignment guidelines.

Show me the money

At the March 22 meeting, Clark and district staff rolled out a suggested $805 million bond package that would complete 29 projects (about seven of the projects affect Districts 5 and 6).

Clark insisted the BOE move forward with the bond after urgency from AdvancED CEO Mark Elgart to address the district’s capital needs.

If passed, the bond would be submitted to the Mecklenburg County commissioners for approval to be placed on an upcoming ballot as a referendum.

The board encouraged public input regarding the capital plan at a public hearing at Vance High School on Tuesday, April 5.

BOE members said they plan to vote on the bond at its April 12 meeting to give county commissioners enough time to examine the bond and vote before they submit their budget.

Some members voiced concern about having enough time to process public comments before April 12, as some members were out of town this week, but Clark urged members to give commissioners as much time as possible to process the bond.

Carmel Christian names Long new Head of School

MATTHEWS – About nine months after Head of School J. Van Wade resigned from Carmel Christian School, the private Christian school announced new leadership.

Michael Long will serve as Carmel Christian head of school beginning June 6, coming to the school from Fellowship Christian School in Roswell, Georgia, where he served as the upper school head.

“Our program at Carmel Christian uniquely focuses on character and equipping our students with Christ-like values so that they can carry out into our world,” said Carmel Baptist Church Executive Pastor Jay Hancock. “Long shares that vision.”

Carmel Christian is a ministry of Carmel Baptist and the church is integral to school’s decisionmaking. The Carmel Christian School Board is a standing committee of the church, comprised of 12 members, who ensure its mission is carried out through the school.

Hancock told Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly last fall the school board developed a search committee, which included Hancock, school board members and school personnel to enlist the services of Coleman-Lew, a Charlotte-based executive search firm, to carry out the search process.

“God has clearly shown us during this search His hand directing us to Mike. In the short time we have known him, we have seen how God has gifted him as an effective communicator, a vi-

sionary, a teacher and an encourager of others. He has a passion for Christian education and his excitement for what Carmel Christian has to offer is contagious,” said school board chairperson Jeanette Bicket, Long, a lifelong Mike Long North Carolinian, is an University of North Carolina graduate with two bachelor’s degrees in political science and history. He also holds a master’s degree in Christian school administration from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has certifications in AP U.S. History teaching and as an Association of Christian Schools (ACSI) administrator.

After graduating from Chapel Hill, Long taught seventh- and eighth-graders in Durham Public Schools, where he often taught children from challenging circumstances. Long said he found many students shared concerns about peer pressure to use drugs and alcohol and to have sex.

While AIDs education was on the rise in the 1980s, Long applied for a grant from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human resources for an “abstinence-only until marriage” tactic to sex education as a response to his students’ pressures.

He developed a video series – rather than a curriculum – in hopes of reaching the MTV

generation.

Long is credited as a “pioneer” of the abstinence education movement throughout the country, training more than 60,000 educators in “directive teaching,” a teaching strategy that helps teachers related to teenagers.

After the development of his video series, Long traveled the country for more than 20 years discussing abstinence education with community groups, schools and children and training teachers the curriculum. Today, the curriculum is used in more than 5,000 school systems and youth organizations worldwide.

About seven years ago, the federal government eliminated sex education funding and Long lost multiple speaking opportunities, so he began looking for a new option.

He went to his pastor, who encouraged him to pursue a career as a leader in a Christian school.

“He told me, ‘You’ve done everything there is to do in education. Why don’t you ring out all that sponge of knowledge in one ministry called a Christian school?’” Long said.

Hancock said Long’s experience as an educator, speaker and curriculum writer attracted the search committee to select him as Carmel’s newest leader.

“When we looked at his past, it’s not so much what he was training about, but the training and skills he’s developed,” he said. “…we were looking at the skills he learned in his (speaking) career and how those are playing out in the extension of his career.”

Hancock hopes Long will be effective in man-

aging Carmel Christian’s growth, which will come with a new capital campaign intended to help build a new high school and student activities center. Carmel Christian had about 900 students this fall and wants to work toward a capacity of 1,000 students.

Long believes he’s ready for the challenge. The new head of school sees many parallels with Fellowship and Carmel, including developing student population growth, and wants to build from those experiences as he takes the helm in June.

“I look forward to leading the school through growth. There is such a need for a school like Carmel – particularly as south Charlotte continues to grow,” Long said.

Long wants Carmel to become a “distinctive Christian school,” which refers to all students developing Christian values, as well as bringing academic standards that “parallel to any other school in the community.”

“We want to teach our kids how to make a living, but we all want to teach them how they can make a life,” he added.

He hopes to develop the school’s academic standard – particularly in the high school – to compete with any school in the community.

“There are three things that we all do – equipping students to prepare for the world, leading our staff and faculty and partnering with parents in the discipleship in our children,” Hancock said. “We want to continue to do those things.”

Carmel Christian will host a welcome event for Long on April 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s worship center.

Since exposure of lead in Flint, Michigan’s water supply has become a national issue, Barry Gullet has assured city and county leaders, as well as the public, that the water here is safe to drink.

He heads up Charlotte Water, the utility that controls the county’s water system. “We have great water here in Charlotte, but all of this negative publicity though is causing me a lot of concern about the customer confidence of our water,� Gullet said.

Charlotte Water is working to expand its lead testing program, communicate with customers about testing and coordinate with public health officials.

He points to two things Charlotte has in its favor: a great corrosion control program that prevents lead pipes from leaching lead and very few pipes to leach from.

The city uncovered just four lead pipes while fixing leaks and making repairs to upward of 1,500 water service connections last year, Gullet said. These tend to be lead goosenecks dating back to the 1920s that connected the water main to the service line.

They have been replaced.

Many of the homes from that era no longer exist.

Charlotte Water also uses lime to coat the inside of pipes to prevent corrosion. Occasionally, high pH levels combined with long travel times in larger pipes create what’s

Charlotte Water hopes to install a system in the next year and a half that would incorporate a polyphosphate blend to lower the pH levels while maintaining effective corrosion control. “This change will put us in a better place to deal with different types of changes that could occur to our water supply and still ensure we have a great drinking water product,� Gullet said.

Gullet has attended several community meetings where he’s heard folks say they don’t drink the tap water because they didn’t do so where they came from. “I want to get the message out that the water here in Charlotte is great,� he said. “It’s good water, and you should drink it.�

Charlotte Water lets residents know when they find something unusual about the system in hopes of maintaining confidence and trust, Gullet said. He recommends anyone that notices a weird odor or taste to call 311. “The problem in Flint was not a chemistry or materials problem,� City Manager Ron Carlee said. “This was a people problem. There was a breakdown at every level of government. While we have distinctions here because of our chemistry and our material, the real distinction is we have a highly professional and highly competitive, longtenured staff in Charlotte Water that understands the business of water.�

Seeking justice before jumping to conclusions

When I was practicing law in Scotland, I sometimes appeared before a judge who, by all accounts, was a decent man. But it was well known that he favored the side which first appeared before him.

So prosecutors loved him, as they always presented their evidence first. Plaintiffs (called pursuers in Scotland) also loved him because they, similarly, led evidence first.

Pastor John H. Munro Although he was a good man, he was a bad judge. A competent judge suspends making a decision until he has heard all of the evidence.

King Solomon put it this way: “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him” (Proverbs 18:17). This is very sound advice. In a court case, cross-examination is vital, as the evidence by one side is then tested by the other side. Most people can sound convincing if their evidence and allegations are never tested.

Every day all of us are tempted to make judgments about people and events. With social media and 24 hours of “breaking news,” it is very easy to jump to quick conclusions about a particular issue or person when all we have really heard is one side. Many people quickly put statements on social media based on half-truths, rumors, allegations or unsubstantiated statements. On the face of

it, they may appear to be experts on the issue they present.

But the fact that someone makes an allegation or an accusation does not prove the veracity of the statement. Wise people reserve judgment until they have heard “the whole truth.” The one who states his case first might be lying, prejudiced, or simply unaware of all the facts.

Over the years, many couples with marital problems have come to me seeking counsel. Often a wife will first present her side of the difficulties. She might not be lying or trying to deceive me, but in many cases, she is selective in what she tells me. Then, when I meet with her husband, I hear another side of the truth. Wisdom requires all of us to suspend judgment until all the facts are known. Too often we jump to conclusions based on our prejudices, preconceptions, or whether we like or dislike a person or viewpoint. In a criminal trial, the accused is presumed to be innocent until all the evidence is presented, and a verdict then reached.

The Old Testament prophet, Micah, said that the Lord requires of us that we “do justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8). God is infinite in His justice, and we who claim to be His children should also live justly and show kindness to all, rather than quickly believing some accusation or rumor, and possibly even gossiping about it to others.

While Lady Justice is blind and her scales of justice perfectly balanced, the reality in our world is often very different. But I am thankful for a God who is infinite in His justice, and whose judgments are always just, impartial, and loving. Let’s always seek to be just and kind, and not quickly jump to conclusions when we have only heard one side.

Country Day baseball ready for big season ahead

Charlotte Country Day’s baseball team (9-6, 0-1 CISAA) has been knocking on the door for a deep postseason run or a championship push the last three years, but has seen its efforts fall short.

Coach Mike Hennessey believes his team can turn the tide this season.

The Buccaneers fell victim to Charlotte Christian in the second round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state playoffs last season and in the semifinals two years ago, and to Wesleyan Christian Academy in the second round in 2013.

The playing field appears to have leveled out this season, with Charlotte Christian being more on par with the rest of the of the teams in the CISAA instead of the usual thoroughbred that has been in front of the rest of the league. Now, more teams than prior years can legitimately jockey for the top spot in the CISAA. “Everybody’s pretty solid,” Hennessey said. “It’s a matter of who’s going to play well through the conference.”

Hennessey, who is in his 11th year as Country Day’s skipper, is having the most fun he’s had as a coach. He said his players are focused, but loose.

“What we do really well I think is we play together on the field,” Hennessey said. “They know their role, and they play together.

There’s no quit in these guys.”

Senior pitcher/outfielder Cole Bloomer said the team’s camaraderie is strong.

“We enjoy practicing and playing together,” Bloomer said.

Country Day certainly has the arms to compete with anyone.

Senior pitcher Trent Alley and Bloomer give Hennessey two quality aces on the mound.

“Trent, when he’s on, he sets the tone for the game,” Hennessey said.

Alley, a Furman signee, has a vast repertoire of pitches that includes a two-seam fastball, four-seam fastball, changeup and breaking ball. He can throw all four for strikes, which makes him difficult to hit.

Hennessey and his staff haven’t had to worry about Alley’s pitch count. The veteran hurler has thrown three complete games this season, and has stayed under 90 to 100 pitches each time.

“I don’t like getting to that number, but he gets up there and his

ball is still down and his fastball is still good,” Hennessey said. “He’s real efficient on the mound, and guys like playing behind him.”

Bloomer, who played quarterback for Country Day before breaking his collar bone last fall, has recovered and developed a breaking ball over the winter. He also has a changeup and fastball in his bag of tricks.

“He’s throwing great for us,” Hennessey said. “I could have him and Trent No. 1 and No. 1 A for the way they’ve thrown. He’s another guy that the guys really rally around when he’s on the mound.”

Bloomer, an Elon football signee, has a 1.42 ERA, while Alley has a 2.33 ERA. Bloomer’s role expands off the mound when he’s not pitching.

He also plays in the outfield, and leads off at the top of the batting order. So far, he’s been tremendous at the plate with a .449 batting average, and has recorded 22 hits, seven RBI, eight doubles, a

triple, and has scored 12 runs.

Sophomore William Hamil (2.86 ERA) provides the Buccaneers with another strong arm, and has been a reliable strike thrower. He uses a nice breaking ball to keep opposing hitters off balance.

Junior shortstop Richard Arendale, who bats in Country Day’s No. 2 hole, has played well defensively and at the plate. He controls the bat well, can hit the ball back through the middle, and does a nice job at bunting. Arendale has a high baseball IQ, which helps him execute at a high level in all phases of the game.

Junior first baseman Ben Williams bats cleanup for the Bucs, and gives Country Day an excellent contact hitter.

“Our first four guys have been really solid for us, real consistent, getting on base, doing the whole thing, get on, get over and get in,” Hennessey said. “We’ve had times where the bottom of our lineup has been better. They’ve been a real great surprise for us too.”

Country Day’s annual spring break trip is usually where the team bonds and comes together, and that proved to be the case once again this season when the Bucs went to Perfect Game’s baseball complex at LakePoint in Emerson, Georgia for the Spring Swing Tournament March 19 to 21.

It was an opportunity for team building, and Country Day took full advantage of it. The Buccaneers played pretty well too, winning three out of their four games.

“Everyone is like a brother. Everyone agrees with everyone, and gets along with everyone,” Alley said. “Off the field when we’re in class, when we’re in an overnight stay somewhere playing games everyone hangs out with everyone, and we always have a good time together. We’re truly a team, and can hold each other responsible for everything that happens.

“We always have a grit to us. We’re not going to give up in any game we play in. We’re always going to be there to compete. It’s what we always talk about. We might not have our best game, we might not be able to throw strikes, we might not be putting the ball in play, but we’re going to be in there. We’re going to compete.”

Much baseball remains to be played, but Country Day is at a good place. The Buccaneers know they must take a one-game-at-atime approach to the rest of the season, and can’t afford to look past anyone. However, this group has been through the gauntlet before, and knows what it takes to be successful.

“We have very high expectations for ourselves,” Bloomer said.

“To perform under pressure, that is going to be big.”

Devon Dotson Providence Day Sophomore point guard Devon Dotson has emerged as one of the nation’s most coveted prospects. Defenders struggled to stay in front of the highly touted floor general, who averaged 16.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.6 apg and 1.8 spg.

Doston, who claims multiple scholarship offers from ACC and SEC schools earned all-CISAA and all-state honors.

Providence Day senior forward Grant Williams led the Chargers to their first state title since 1999 and an appearance in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Nationals. The Tennessee signee averaged 15.7 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 3.4 apg and 2.7 bpg to earn CISAA Player of the Year, make the all-state team, and be nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Game.
