Hotels express interest in Pineville

Going for gold

PINEVILLE – Pineville has a chance of landing not one, but two new hotels along Park Road.

Pineville Town Council will consider two rezoning requests in the coming months.

Hotel Ventures of Pineville, based in Georgia, wants to rezone three undeveloped acres at 12228 Park Road to build Fairfield Inn Pineville. The land is located behind La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries and The Flooring Pros at Park Road and Carolina Place Parkway, near the Sam’s Club.

The four-story building will house 103 rooms within 61,833 square feet. The hotel will provide 107 parking spaces, more than the 78 that are required, as well as a swimming pool and fire pit.

The Charlotte region is home to five Fairfield Inn and Suite locations, including Arrowridge Boulevard and East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte. The Marriott brand has more than 700 North American locations.

Pineville Town Council has set a public hearing for May 10 to discuss the Woodsprings Suites Hotel at 10942 Park Road, near the BiLo grocery store.

The company is known for its extended stay hotels, with more than 200 WoodSpring Suites and Value Place hotels in 30 states. The company has a Value Place hotel in Gastonia.

Son refuses my early retirement request

My wife and I own a couch, which is nice. We bought this couch to match the paint on the walls and the rug in our den – a concept apparently known as “normal” to people like my wife. (I’ve since learned comJonathan McElvy fort is no competitor to coordination, but let’s not digress.)

As you might imagine, we bought this couch for first-world reasons. We like to sit on cushions when we watch 2-hour movies.

Once upon a time, Meghan and I even used this couch to conduct semi-adult conversations about things like life, growth and the Zika virus.

This couch is not what it used to be. It is a trampoline, a hiding place, a canvass for Crayons.

More than two years ago – 31 months to be exact – I began writing a series of columns about our first born, Hank. Psychologists call these epistles “coping mechanisms.” I like to think they appeal to a segment of our loyal readership that either: 1) Knows the pains of which I speak, or; 2) Loves laughing at people like me because they have grown children and no longer face the tyranny of

toddlers.

Hank is not a tyrant – yet. He is simply a confused child in search of Oreos and mud.

That doesn’t mean he’s a slow child by any stretch. It’s that his entire life has just two consistent variables: Sleep and play – in no particular order and neither, necessarily, unto its own.

Sleep. A number of months ago, it became apparent Hank wanted his sleeping habits to change. Even though his mother and I had illusions the lad might enjoy the safe-haven of his crib for years to come (maybe until his wedding night), the thermal spy gear we installed in his room indicated otherwise.

First he stood at the edge of his crib and talked to different objects in his room. He’d do this for an hour, content just to carry on conversations; one night he sang a drunkish version of Hickory, Dickory, Dock to his stuffed dog.

Next, Hank realized he’d really like to grab some reading material off the shelf, so we watched the grainy monitor as he’d stand there and look lovingly across the room, attempting maneuvers that might launch him toward his stash of Little Golden Books.

As you all know, the boy did discover his crib was only a faux prison. One night, Hank scored a paltry 8.3 on his dismount from the railing, ending with a thud that simultaneously ejected mom and me from the coordinated couch. If he couldn’t stick

his landing, we’d have to lower the balance beam.

The next day, I came home from work and began the conversion of our son’s crib into a bed. By 10 p.m., Hank crashed with mom and me, cursed the Allen guy who created a wrench designed for mutants with dimesized hands.

Hank has not rested his bottom on that converted bed since. For nearly six months, he has slept on the floor of his room, which is fine because that’s where he wanted to be all along anyway.

What’s important is that he sleeps, because if he didn’t, I have no idea where he’d find the money to buy the amount of opiates he’d need to play at his current pace.

With all the adoration a father can muster, our son is Rain Man with a smile. More than a year ago, Hank fell in love with cars – you know, the ones you step on in the middle of the night and curse all the way to the kitchen.

I don’t know how many cars Hank owns because half of them are in the couch. What I do know is that I suffer from a disorder that seeks my son’s loyal affection. It doesn’t matter if we’re at a pharmacy or a grocery store. If there are cars on the toy aisle, I buy him one, and often a handful. My affliction of acceptance is mitigated by our son’s compulsiveness. The kid will spend minutes lining each of his cars across the coffee table,

only to crash them all into the TV console, which sends coordinated mom into near hyperventilation.

What intrigues me so about my son’s play is how he can completely forget he has 327 cars in a basket and, within seconds, turn his diminutive attention to the 328 plastic animals I’ve purchased for him at the Nickel Store. (When you step on a hard, plastic Stegosaurus, it hurts much worse than Lightning McQueen.)

But Hank’s favorite toy, it turns out, is me. That couch has become his trampoline, launching his 35-pounds of furor into my arms with zero notice. He hides under its pillows proclaiming that he’s seen a bear in the hallway and asking me to hide with him. And he’s discovered a new game that requires me to bench-press him toward the sky and drop him to the nearest pillow.

The other night, I pulled Hank aside and told him this fathering thing was a young man’s game. I even drafted retirement papers, right after my back recoiled into a block of steel. He refused my offer and told me I’m in it for the long haul.

My wife and I are exhausted, which means we’ve done the only sane thing two consenting humans can do. We’ve ordered Hank a brother, due to be shipped in late summer.

We’re gonna need a bigger couch.

News Briefs South Charlotte teens hold book swap to raise awareness Teens in south Charlotte have joined forces to raise funds and awareness for the work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s fight against cancer. A book swap fundraiser will take place at Ballantyne Village’s One-Five-O Studio Gallery on April 24, a Sunday, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring a book to donate, and take another donated book home. Monetary donations will be accepted.

A book donation drop-off will take place on Sunday, April 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. to prepare for the book swap.

Miles Against Melanoma 5K run, walk slated for April 30 The fifth annual Miles Against Melanoma North Carolina run and walk will take place April 30, a Saturday, at the Arboretum Shopping Center. Proceeds from the event will go toward melanoma research and playground sun shades for local schools.

The one-mile fun run will begin at 8 a.m. with the 5k following at 8:05 a.m. A Kids Dash will take place at 9:30 a.m.

Registration costs $25 for adults and $20 for kids 18 years old and younger. Prices increase on race day.

Charlotte designer’s work on display at White House dinner Charlotte-based textile design firm Wesley Mancini, Ltd. had a spot at the White House State Dinner for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on March 10, without actually attending the event.

The tablecloths used for the event were made with fabric from the Home Fabrics by Wesley Wesley Mancini Mancini Collection, owned by Myers Park resident Wesley Mancini, who has lived in the area for 28 years.

“It's always interesting where my fabric shows up,” Mancini said. “Mostly I find out about it after the fact, but it is still exciting.”

The White House selected Mancini’s embroidered jade tablecloths because it’s Canadian First Lady Sophie Gregoire Trudeau's favorite color.

Mancini’s fabrics also have been seen in feature films, including Pretty Woman, Jumanji and Austin Powers, as well as international magazines “People” and “Vanity Fair.”

“Sometimes, I’ll be walking on the street, and someone passes by with a handbag, garment or shoes made with my textiles and I take a double look,” the designer said.

In 2014, Mancini was presented the inaugural

International Textile Market Association (ITMA) Lifetime Achievement Award voted on by its members of 200 mills from around the globe.

Wesley Mancini, Ltd., is a design studio in SouthEnd that designs textiles and other interior home products with a staff of six employees.

Kostkowski has competed in the games in prior years, and claims one gold medal, two silver medals and two bronze medals for single and doubles table tennis. This year, she’ll compete in track and field’s 100- and 200-meter dash.

Kostkowski trains through exercising daily and participating in group fitness and yoga classes at the senior living community. She grew up dancing, and took up golf and table tennis after she married. She first heard about the games when she was 70 years old, and participated in a table tennis competition with her husband. They traveled together to the national games in Houston, San Francisco and Louisville as a way to socialize and see the country. After moving to Waltonwood Providence, she began competing in track and field to try something new.

“I’m convinced that exercise and diet are very important as you get older,” she said. “It keeps the circulation going and your muscles moving so they don’t deteriorate. The more you use them, the more you’ll be able to use them. My mother lived to be 93 years old, but began using a walker at about 80. I definitely think being active has contributed to my quality of life at 90 years old. I try to eat healthy and include a lot of vegetables, fruits and whole grains in my diet, which the dining team at Waltonwood already incorporates, so it is easy for me to do.”

Morrison Family YMCA will celebrate Healthy Kids Day April 30, a Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon.

This free event will include family-friendly activities to promote healthy kids and families in spirit, mind and body. Kids will celebrate making fitness fun and become introduced to a variety of YMCA programs, and ways to take care of themselves.

County jobless ticks up slightly Mecklenburg County’s unemployment rate increased slightly from 5.2 percent in January to 5.3 percent in February, according to stats from the N.C. Department of Commerce.

Some 30,025 of Mecklenburg County’s 571,082 workforce were out of work in February. The 5.3 percent rate was the same as February 2015.

Pizza chain opens in South End Blaze Fast Fire’d Pizza opened its first Charlotte location April 7 at 1750 Camden Road.

While a separation agreement or equitable distribution order can help untangle your assets from your ex-spouse’s, a review of your assets, agreement or order, and estate planning documents with an estate planning attorney can help ensure how your assets are handled or disposed of, if you become incapacitated or die during the separation proceeding or after divorce. The following isn’t a complete list of what you should review with an estate planning attorney; however, it’s a good start: • Your separation agreement or equitable distribution order: These documents will inform the attorney of a division of assets that has taken place or which need to be accomplished.

• Previously signed estate planning documents: If you named your former spouse as a fiduciary (e.g., executor, trustee, health care agent, attorney-in-fact, etc.) or beneficiary, provide copies of those documents to your attorney for review. For example, the separation agreement or court orders may not revoke your former spouse as the named attorney-in-fact in your financial power of attorney.

• Assets which have beneficiary designations: Make sure you change your designations.

Unfortunately, for qualified retirement plans such as a 401(k), you can’t change the beneficiary designation from your ex-spouse without a qualified domestic relations order (“QDRO”), or a consent document signed by your ex-spouse.

• Lists of assets and debts: Separate lists for

yours and your ex-spouse’s. Often, you and your ex-spouse have become jointly and separately liable on debts (e.g., mortgage), and court orders and/or separation agreements rarely change your liability on those debts; although they may require attempts to refinance the debts.

• Guardianship of minor children: Try to come to an agreement with your ex-spouse regarding who will be the guardian of your children if something happens to you both, to avoid argument between your and your ex-spouse’s families.

• List of primary and secondary fiduciaries: Decide who will handle your health and financial decisions (during your lifetime and after) for you and your beneficiaries. You may need a personal representative for your estate, trustee for any trust, guardian for any minor children, health care agent under a health care power of attorney, and attorney-in-fact under a financial power of attorney.

It’s important to seek an experienced attorney for legal advice regarding updating your estate plan while you’re handling your separation and/ or divorce.

Piper Glen residents want to show a public utility company where to stick its poles. The politically correct answer – not in their front yards.

Residents of the upscale golf course community have reached out to elected leaders, city staff and television news stations to express their concerns over Crown Castle’s desire to put four 28-foot poles in their neighborhood. Utilities have traditionally been put into the ground in Piper Glen.

While some residents have cited personal freedoms, others like Ali Martinez have evoked actual bald eagles, noting the location of one of the poles conflicts with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Crown Castle contends that Piper Glen is part of an effort to improve the Charlotte area’s wireless network. The public utility company works to strengthen wireless network capacity to prevent dropped calls and lagging data streaming across all providers at a time when mobile devices are using more data.

While macrocells mounted on towers or rooftops help blanket a geographic area with wireless coverage, Crown Castle sometimes uses small cell nodes, like those proposed in Piper Glen, to improve coverage.

“Crown Castle aims to enable the necessary, daily mobile connection that communities require,” according to Ann Brooks, government relations manager for Crown Castle. “We use great care when considering where to place facilities in the public right of way and many factors are involved in the design, engineering and construction of our networks.”

Factors include the availability of existing poles, safety regulations and local permitting requirements.

Crown Castle applied in March to place the poles in Piper Glen. The Charlotte Department of Transportation has since provided the utility with alternate locations favored by residents.

Crown Castle is determining whether the alternates meet regulatory and technical standards.

The utility has been working with the city for more than a year on the project.

It presented plans to Piper Glen’s master board in June 2015 and at annual meeting on September 2015. Company officials also met with residents and city representatives in October 2015.

Ed Driggs not only lives in Piper Glen, but he also represents the community on the Charlotte City Council. Driggs has been working with city staff to determine the neighborhood’s options.

While Driggs could not be reached for comment for this story, he sent a memo March 31 to the neighborhood detailing the city’s work on the permit.

“I have stressed to staff that residents have made substantial investments in the appearance of Piper Glen, including a sizable payment to upgrade the traffic light at Piper Glen Drive,” Driggs wrote in the memo. “[The Charlotte Department of Transportation] has noted neighbors’ concerns and is making a significant effort to minimize the impact of pole installation on the neighborhood.”

City staff has told Driggs that Charlotte can influence the design and placement of poles but can’t deny the utility access to public rights-of-way.

The CDOT will not approve the permit until after the utility has evaluated the alternates provided by the neighborhood, according to Division Manager Mike Davis.

Piper Glen resident Joel Randolph said the community asked the utility to place the poles in a common area or golf course crossing rather than someone’s front yard or property.

Randolph was pleased with how city staff and elected leaders have listened to the community’s concerns, but he’s frustrated about the neighborhood’s lack of options.

“It’s messed up the way the law is written,” Randolph said. “They can do this and there’s not a damn thing we can do about it.”

Superintendent pushes for $22.9M increase from county

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Ann Clark and staff presented a proposed $1.47-billion 2016-17 budget at the school board’s April 12 meeting, a 2.1 percent increase from the 2015-16 budget.

The proposed budget included $1.37 billion allocated to operating costs, as well as a recommended $425.1 million county appropriation – a $22.9-million increase from last year. “This budget request focuses on strengthening our core operations," Clark said. “As a large and growing district, CMS must strategically invest in the people, facilities and operations services that are the foundation of a high quality education for all students.�

District staff pointed to increased needs in operation from increasing student enrollment of an estimated 504 more students; increased operating costs; benefits cost increases; increased charter pass-through costs; greater capital needs and a potential teacher salary increase.

Clark said the $22.9-million increase is mostly from the charter school pass-through and the anticipated salary increase, tallying about $17.3 million. She explained some of CMS’s teachers are paid through county funding, so the district doesn’t want any discrepancies between state- and county-paid teachers.

At-large BOE member Elyse Dashew said she heard Gov. Pat McCrory is urging for a 10-per-

cent teacher salary increase, rather than the 3-percent increase laid out in the proposed budget.

Clark explained staff included a 3-percent salary increase for all CMS employees, not only teachers.

The remaining $5.3-million of the increase would go toward school resource officer contract increases; local supplements for teacher for firstgrade classroom reduction; an increased transportation plan for magnet programs; benefits cost increases; additional staff and facility operating costs; and expenses to support the estimated population increase.

Staff also pointed out the recommended operating budget increase from the county to fund two “critical� funding needs – an immediate $22.9 million operating need to cover rising costs and an immediate $805 million for capital needs to expand choice options and relieve overcrowding.

Clark also noted the county’s per-pupil funding, which is $16 lower than it was in 2009.

Mecklenburg County continues to rank the highest in property taxes collected across the state, but is ranked eighth in percentage of total county expenditures going to schools. Most the CMS per-pupil funding growth is from federal funding – its least flexible source.

The board will move forward with the budget process with community meetings on the budget on April 25, 27 and 28, as well as a public hearing of the budget at its April 26 meeting.

The board plans to vote on the 2016-17 budget request at its May 10 meeting.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools parents can rejoice as district staff released a draft of the guiding principles for student assignment that both retain home schools and alleviate concentrations of poverty. “We are talking about the ‘what’ and not the ‘how,’� Board of Education Chair Mary McCray told the full board on April 12 before Superintendent Ann Clark read the drafted guidelines.

Earlier in the meeting, speakers from both sides of the controversial topic – those pushing for home schools, designated by green shirts, and those urging for greater equality along socioeconomic lines, who wore orange shirts – plead their cases during public comment. “There is no such thing as a neighborhood that owns a school. These are public schools.

We all own these schools,� said Laura McCormack, an 11th-grade English teacher at Garinger High School.

One speaker simply asked the board to bring “clarity� and “leadership� to the issue.

He received his answer with a policy that McCray hopes brings the green and orange shirts together.

Clark said the guidelines create guardrails for staff – and a possible consultant – that provide “healthy tensions� between area concerns.

The drafted guidelines establish a home schools policy that considers facility capacity, travel distance, keeping neighborhoods attending the same school, population density and

keeping feeder patterns.

The drafted guidelines also include a provision regarding “ensuring equitable access to high-quality schools� that would establish a priority in school options lotteries and transfers processes for children in chronically low-performing schools, and would implement partial magnet, targeted turnaround program and specialized academic options in underperforming schools.

The guidelines also include provisions regarding school option and “operational efficiency,� which reflects the district’s increasing capital needs.

The guidelines urge that the board will ensure “every home school is a high quality and viable school choice.� “There is a lot of talking and this document shows that there has been a lot of listening,� said BOE member Rhonda Lennon. “Everything that was said tonight (during public comment) is reflected in this document.�

Multiple members commended that the document effectively reflected the public’s request and captures the diverse point of views.

District 5 member Eric Davis encouraged the “orange and green shirts� to start coming together and engaging in conversations.

He said he wanted to help his district understand what it’s like to live in other districts.

The board’s next step is a public hearing of the drafted principles, which will take place April 20, a Wednesday, at 6 p.m. in the board chambers. The board plans to vote on the principles at its April 26 regular meeting.

Eighth-graders use Silver Award to help peers

To earn their Girl Scout Silver Award, Cadettes of Troop 440 and Community House Middle School eighth-graders Jordan Riter and Jenna Segmiller decided to help their peers.

The Silver Award is the second highest award of Girl Scouts and requires participants to complete a 50-hour service projects that leaves a lasting impact on the community.

“I first wanted to do a project with animals, and then I thought about doing a project that was closer to home that could affect a lot of people that I knew and that I was friends with,” Jordan said.

Jordan partnered with Beth Pannenberg, a Community House health teacher, to host a weekly “Girl Power” club that fosters an environment for middle school girls to discuss relevant topics and help them “learn how to be their best self.”

“I noticed there wasn’t a place for girls to be together and learn how to be happy and express themselves and just celebrate being a girl,” Pannenberg said.

A group of girls meet every Wednesday morning and discuss topics, such as cyberbullying or peer pressure, play games, have a snack and participate in a health activity, such as yoga or Pilates.

Thirteen-year-old Jordan was a part of Pannenberg’s “Fit For Life” class and Pannenberg felt Jordan’s contributions added another ele-

ment to the club that was relatable and attracted more students to join.

“I think it’s unique for a teacher and a student to be able to work together,” Pannenberg said.

“Jordan has modeled positive, mature teenage behavior and these girls can then see and carry it out themselves.”

Jenna, 14, created a survival booklet that aids in middle school transitions and is now used

by Community House for newly enrolled students.

“I had a rough adjustment to middle school and I wanted to help people have a smooth adjustment,” Jenna said, who worried about class transitions and time management.

The booklet delves into various topics and provides tips, such as bringing a map to school on the first day of the semester.

“I hope that people use my booklet as a resource and look something up,” Jenna said.

Jordan said she had a similar experience starting middle school and wanted to help younger girls adjust.

Jordan learned leadership skills through earning her Silver Award and hopes to encourage other girls to work on their leadership and public speaking skills after she’s left Community House.

Selwyn supports child abuse prevention

A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds, according to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Jessica Webster, a counselor at Selwyn Elementary School, hopes to diminish the number of reports of child abuse and prevent child abuse altogether.

That’s why the Selwyn community joined thousands of communities throughout the state and nation, including J.V. Washam Elementary School, in observing Child Abuse Prevention Month by “planting” a pinwheel garden in front of their school.

Pinwheels are the national symbol of child abuse prevention and Selwyn students created a display outside their school to show their support for preventing child abuse.

CMS is a member of the Mecklenburg Child Abuse Prevention Team and all CMS employees are trained on the signs of child abuse and the reporting procedures.

Selwyn counselors are visiting classrooms this month to teach lessons that aim to promote awareness and educate students about defining and identifying child abuse, and finding help if they find abuse.

Webster taught a Jeopardy-themed lesson on April 11 to a fourth-grade class that focused on cyber safety, their right to be cared for, right to be safe and right to receive help.

“Bad guys aren’t always dressed in baggy clothes and don’t always look like a tough guy,” Web-

ster told the fourth-grade class. “They can look friendly and look like your moms and dads.”

Webster also talked with students about their rights to proper treatment and care, as well as the differences between wants and needs.

“We’re making sure they understand what it means when it says ‘to be cared for’ and that their needs are being met,” she added.

Webster said she doesn’t experience child abuse at Selwyn as much compared to other areas she’s worked because they educate students about their rights, and students have strong parental support.

“Education is our most powerful tool and hopefully by educating our students and our community, we can stop child abuse,” Webster said.

Quail Hollow could adopt charter school-like policies

Quail Hollow Middle School might see changes to better reach its students, in an attempt to avoid its current “recurring low performing” school designation.

Quail Hollow, which is zoned for Pineville middle-schoolers, is among the 14 CharlotteMecklenburg schools denoted as a continual low-performing school.

The North Carolina Board of Education approved a policy last month that provides options for improving high priority schools, such as charter school-like flexibility in teacher assignment and pay or calendars. The policy carries out a provision from a state law passed in 2010 to create options to reaching low-performing schools.

“Recurring low performing” refers to schools that have not met proficiency marks for at least two of the past three years.

Quail Hollow earned a “D” for its school performance grade, despite meeting growth numbers. The “low performing” distinction does not take growth into account after September.

The “restart” model is particularly attractive to area schools because it will provide exemptions from statutes and rules charter schools are afforded. The policy provides a few other options, including a transformation model and a turnaround model.

The restart model could give CMS the ability to reduce the number of days from summer break, particularly for schools with high percentages of low-income students, who often experience “summer slide” over break. Approximately 67.5 percent of Quail Hollow students were considered economically disadvantaged in the 2013-14 school year, a 1 percent decrease from the previous year.

CMS has pushed for greater calendar flexibility in the past and they are not alone.

State Superintendent June Atkinson said multiple superintendents across the sate have told her their districts are interested in the restart model, particularly school systems that want to prevent instructional losses over the summer.

Some schools are already looking for ways to help high priority schools throughout the district.

Quail Hollow hosts Citizen School, in which student engage in 10-week apprenticeships led by citizen-teacher professional to help connect the classroom with the “real world.”

The program seeks to minimize the opportunity gap between low- and high-income families and to help build the first steps to potential careers.

CMS must apply to the state board to pursue the model, but staff hasn’t taken any formal steps toward bringing the model to Quail Hollow.

Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

Charlotte Catholic students selected for summer programs CHARLOTTE – Two Charlotte Catholic High School juniors were named to highly selective collegiate summer programs for 2016, and one senior was named a Park Scholar.

Kayleigh Ruller was accepted to the University of Notre Dame Leadership Seminars program in American arts, popular culture and social change.

Kayleigh was selected for the summer program from approximately 2,000 applicants.

Nicholas Derrico was accepted to the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar Leadership program. This highly selective program can be a “great stepping stone” for obtaining a future Naval Academy Appointment, according to a news release.

Seventeen-year-old high school senior Matthew Salvino was named a Class of 2020 Park Scholar by North Carolina State University, as well as a finalist for the Robertson Scholars Leadership Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Matthew also has progressed to the semi-finalist stage for the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholarship at Notre Dame University. He plans to major in chemical engineering and attend medical school.

Matthews is president of the Honor Council and founder of the annual “Cougars 4 a Cure” fundraising event, which has raised more than $60,000 for

bladder cancer research.

He also is a cancer researcher at the Levine Cancer Institute and has been published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Matthew was personally affected by cancer, as his mother was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2012. She’s now cancer free.

Pineville Elementary School to host international fair April 28 PINEVILLE – Pineville Elementary School will host its International Night on April 28, a Thursday, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

I’m Tony, I’m codependent; and everyone said, “Hi Tony”

One of the most incredible privileges I have as executive director of Charlotte Rescue Mission is attending alumni meetings of our graduates. Let me pause and explain who our graduates are.

Every man and woman who enters Charlotte Rescue Mission – either our Rebound men’s or Dove’s Nest women’s program – come to us because of an addiction to drugs and alcohol. They lost their jobs, their family and their children. We provide them with a free, Christian, comprehensive residential substance abuse recovery program. Ultimately, we want them to graduate, become gainfully employed and have a place of their own. Enough explaining – let me get back to the story.

At our Rebound men’s alumni event, George led the program. He is a graduate who comes back regularly to encourage the men at the Mission. He once sat in the same seat they occupy. Prior to the Mission, his family disowned him. Today, he is reconnected to his daughter.

Our women’s Dove’s Nest alumni event is a “hoot.” It is almost 100 women who graduated from the Mission. The energy in the room is electric. The woman who leads it is a graduate. Today, she has well over five years sobriety. I listened to women

share their stories of how their lives had crashed and burned. They lost custody of their children. They lost jobs. They couldn’t stop abusing drugs until they came to the Mission. One woman talked about her 20-year Rev. Tony Marciano journey of abusing drugs and was finally clean and sober.

When she finished, all the women in the room shouted for joy, celebrating that she had finally “got it together.”

Then the leader of the program said, “Tony, c’mon up and tell your story.”

I walked to the podium. The room was silent. Would I reiterate one of my workshops I taught every one of them? Would I encourage them? Or would I be honest about my own journey? I could almost hear God say, “Be real.”

I looked at the crowd and said, “My name is Tony and I’m codependent.” They all said, “Hi Tony.” I went on to tell my story. The most I had in high school was two beers on one senior night. I never smoked pot. I never drank or did drugs in college. Yet, I understand their story.

ily, I grew up in a rageaholic family. My father could verbally assault a waitress leaving her in a puddle of tears. They grew up in similar homes.

I went on to say how it affected my life.

I became a people pleaser. I desperately needed approval and affirmation. I had a hard time finishing projects I started. I could be very impulsive. These are all the characteristics of an alcoholic. Even though I never abused alcohol, I resonated with everyone in the room.

I finished my story explaining that, for more 20 years, God has been doing a work of grace in my heart and life, transforming me from the inside out. I’m not where I used to be, but I’m not where I want to be either. It’s been a fantastic journey of transformation where God has walked with me the entire time.

I’ve learned I only need God’s approval, not others. It’s OK to be honest. It’s OK to say, “I’m not perfect.” It’s OK to say I’m an unfinished work in progress. It’s OK to know that God isn’t finished with me yet.

It’s OK to be real.

Charlotte Catholic lacrosse looks to reclaim state title

Charlotte Catholic boys’ lacrosse team knows what it feels like to win and lose a state championship. Several of the team’s current players were on the roster when the Cougars won the state championship two years ago, and for last season’s 7-6 loss to Apex in the state championship.

They haven’t forgotten what that disappointment felt like.

“It felt a lot better winning than losing, that’s for sure,” Charlotte Catholic senior defender and Delaware signee Zach Strassner said. “It’s also a new year. We want to go out on a high note. It’s been a great experience so far.”

Catholic head coach Bo Turner operates the defense, while his assistant coach Chris Diamond runs the offense. Turner said lacrosse has always been promoted as the fastest game on two feet, which influences his up-tempo philosophy for the Cougars.

“I hate teams that slow it down, and I hate teams that play zone,” Turner said. “I’m not going to play zone defense. If you’re not good enough to play man-to-man and run, you’re not going to beat us. We like to run and gun on offense, move the ball and take lots of shots.

“On defense, I like to get out and press people.

If you’re good enough to beat that, you’re going to beat us. If you’re not, we’re going to give you

fits probably, and a lot of times we give people fits.”

Turner recently gave his team a midterm report. He told his seniors they need to take ownership of the team, and step up as leaders.

“Sometimes I thought some of them needed to do a better job of bringing the younger guys along,” Turner said. “I know I can count on them

on the field, but keeping the tradition going and being leaders to these younger guys, they need to do a better job. Hopefully that sinks in going forward for the second half of the season and through the playoffs.”

Senior attackman and Mercer signee Jackson Harris, who has returned from a torn ACL he sustained during a scrimmage last June, wasn’t going to let an injury keep from playing his final year of high school lacrosse.

“I rehabbed really hard and did what the other guys who have torn theirs told me to do,” Harris said. “I put in the work, and got back to where I needed to be.”

Turner, who is in his 22nd year at the helm, said his players might goof around at practice, but know when to be serious. The Cougars record certainly speaks to that, as they’ve jumped out to a 12-1 (3-0 Conference 11) start.

“Practice, it always seems we keep it loose, but in the games, when you’re getting hype with your boys and you’re making good plays and everyone’s hustling, that’s fun,” Strassner said.

Harris said it’s a trickledown effect from the coaches, because they’re loose and enjoy having a good time.

“They also have a serious side, and games are why we play this sport,” Harris said. “We do put in work during practice, but we try to make it fun. I think that’s a big reason why we are successful during games.”

Turner challenged his team with a difficult schedule, featuring the likes of Providence Day, Charlotte Country Day, Oak Hill and other strong programs. His players have responded well.

This senior class is a special group, making three state championship appearances and winning one. In fact, Strassner, Harris and their classmates don’t know what it feels like to lose a conference game.

Strassner said the difficult nonconference slate Catholic faced has given the Cougars the confidence they need to take care of business in league play.

The goal at the beginning of each season is to win their conference. They think they should win it every year, and believe it’s a disappointment if they don’t.

Expectations are even higher than a conference championship this season. Harris said the goal for this team is to win the state championship.

At the end of last season’s state championship game, Strassner ran over to Catholic’s goalie Grant Portwood, and told him, “We’re going to be back here next year, but we’re not going to lose.”

The Cougars appear to have what it takes to make their dreams come true, but the road is long and several obstacles remain.

Lacrosse gives Providence Day players platform to serve others

Sports are a big deal, but they become even more significant when they’re used to help young people. That’s what the boys and girls lacrosse players at Providence Day have shown through serving the children at the Greater Enrichment Program (GEP).

GEP is an afterschool program for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. It includes students from high poverty schools, such as Thomasboro, Ashley Park and Merry Oaks International academies.

The Providence Day athletes, led by junior Reed Baker, call their program Everyone Loves Lacrosse (ELL).

“If you look at college lacrosse, or even high school lacrosse, there’s not a lot of diversity,” Baker said. “It’s a very expensive sport.

ELL, we go into underprivileged school communities, where they can’t really pay for all the equipment you need to have to play lacrosse, so we provide that and we provide coaching. We’re just trying to grow the game in those areas.”

Baker got involved with ELL as a freshman, when former Providence Day lacrosse player Kyle Asher asked him if he wanted to help.

However, ELL initially lacked the structure necessary to function on a consistent basis. Baker said there were months where nothing would happen, and months where he was at GEP every weekend. He relied on a text message from someone to set something up. Things needed to change for ELL to work and serve the GEP students well.

This year, with the help of Providence Day boys’ lacrosse assistant coach Ken Loeber and GEP, they were able to set up a schedule for Baker and other Chargers to work with the children. ELL now takes place weekly at Merry Oaks – on Thursdays during the fall and Saturdays during the spring.

The weekly sessions have made a difference, and the kids are improving their technique due to more consistent practices. Providence Day usually sends five or six players to work with 25 to 30

kids in GEP. “It’s been incredible,” Baker said. “The kids when you go there they sprint out of the school and on to the field. They’re always smiling and laughing. To know that you could be making a sport an asset to them, not just like a game for fun, but something they could use to get into college, get an education they wouldn’t get otherwise that’s huge.”

The vast majority of GEP students come from high poverty neighborhoods, where football and basketball are the only sports children grow up playing. The Providence Day lacrosse players have provided them with exposure to a new sport, good mentors and broadened their social sphere.

The Chargers have taught the children teamwork, sportsmanship, the fundamentals of lacrosse, physical fitness, healthy play, how to persevere through adversity, and the importance of giving back to the community.

“One thing we try to do here is provide our students with a

variety of opportunities, and we’re always looking for positive mentors and role models,” GEP executive director Bronica Glover said. “The Providence Day students have been the best role models for our kids. They’re friendly, very mature, and they want to give back.

“It gives the students hope, and it makes the students feel good.

It builds their confidence, because someone is taking the time to teach them something.”

GEP has a student advisory board represented by children from each grade level. The board meets once a month to talk about what the students want to do at GEP. She said lacrosse is one of the programs the kids enjoy most. Some even want to join a lacrosse team.

Recently, kids in the program were given the opportunity to be on-field guests for a Charlotte Hounds game, and even obtained lacrosse equipment through a grant from the Hounds.

“For a more privileged student to come it makes a difference, because they see, ‘Wow, someone cares about me, and I can do this,’” Glover said. “They just feel important. You just have to see our kids. They’ve changed with the whole teamwork aspect and sportsmanship. They leave more confident after each workshop.

They don’t give up.”

Providence Day’s boys’ lacrosse team is off to a strong 11-4 (4-0 CISAA) start to the season, but head coach Bobby Thompson is prouder of the difference his players are making in the lives of students at GEP. He said it speaks to their character.

“I heard from the folks at GEP, and they’ve been thrilled to have them come,” Thompson said. “They sent me a note, saying how great the players have been and how excited the kids are when they know they’re coming.

“In the past we’ve done some other community service similar to what Reed’s organized with different groups, but this one’s lasted and it’s all because of Reed.”

Baker hopes ELL continues to function as an avenue to serve GEP students long after he graduates and moves on from Providence Day.

“The great programs that traditionally have strong teams it was a good test for us,” Goodyear said. “The girls have really risen to the challenge. They’ve competed hard. We’ve gotten better.

“For us, we say three things before every game we need to do really well to win games. One of those things is to make the routine plays, to excel in making the plays we’re able to make, the ones that are hit to us, to run the bases well and to have a great twostrike approach.”

The Knights are starting to hit the ball well, and have been challenged with quality pitching.

Charlotte Christian’s softball team has responded well to new coach Zach Goodyear, who is in his first season at the helm. He took the reins after serving as an assistant coach under interim coach Jamie Harris.

The Knights (9-7-1, 3-1 CISAA) are looking to defend their conference championship, and are certainly a contender for the league title once again.

Goodyear, who also is an assistant basketball coach for Christian’s boys’ basketball team, played college baseball at the Division III level for Ferrum College in Virginia.

“I was really surprised how much fun it was to coach and coach those girls,” Goodyear said. “I was a little nervous the first time I met with that group, but they’ve been amazing. It’s really

He wants to see his team improve with its overall awareness of the situations its in during games. This is especially important for players who are playing new positions.

Junior pitcher McKenzie Lewis has been stellar on the mound this season. She pitches every inning of every game. Lewis also has given the Knights with her bat.

Senior Christi Takac, a Charleston Southern signee, has been strong at the plate thus far. She made the difficult switch from shortstop to catcher, but has responded well.

The Knights host Hickory Grove on April 18.
