Canceling I-77 work could halt I-485, U.S. 74 projects by Justin Vick justin@carolinaweeklynewspapers.com
Breaking a contract to install toll lanes along 26 miles of Interstate 77 could not only result in a heavy financial penalty, but also halt projects designed to relieve traffic congestion on I-485 and U.S. 74. The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) convenes Jan. 20 to discuss the I-77 project and consider Gov. Pat McCrory’s request to reaffirm the region’s managed lane strategy. “If CRTPO votes to no longer follow a strategy of managed lanes,
there is a consequence, said Ned Curran, chairman of the board for the N.C. Department of Transportation. “The consequence is that the projects that incorporated a managed lane element do not go forward. The CRTPO approved a 10-year transportation plan in August that included managed lanes for I-485, U.S. 74 and the Lake Norman portion of I-77. Momentum continues to build against I-77 tolls, even though construction began two months ago. This prompted Transportation Secretary Nick Tennyson to release a statement in November noting that if the CRTPO were to vote to cancel the project, the NCDOT would work with local leaders to do so.
