‘Skyscrapers and Chicken Plants’ Book explores Mexican migration to Charlotte

A new book exploring Mexican migration in the South contends that growing anti-immigration sentiment in Charlotte didn’t originate in urban or rural areas, but in suburban communities in neighboring towns.

Julie M. Weise, an assistant history professor at the University of Oregon, discussed her book, “Corazon de Dixie: Mexicanos in the U.S. South since 1910,” Jan. 21, at the Levine Museum of the New South.

Weise devoted the last chapter, dubbed “Skyscrapers and Chicken Plants,” to Mexican immigrants moving to Charlotte-area suburbs.

Charlotte’s burgeoning business community welcomed immigrant men in the 1990s and 2000s to take on construction and factory jobs.

But once they started coming with families to settle in white neighborhoods just past county lines, there was more resistance to immigrants pursuing middle class dreams.

The suburbs bought into the argument that immigrants were consuming taxpayer dollars – an idea popularized during the 1990s in California, Weise said.

“I don’t see it as a Southern thing,” Weise said.

“I actually see it as western ideas coming to the South.”

The chapter about Charlotte has 189 footnotes. Some allude to stories in local newspapers,

such as the Charlotte Observer and La Noticia.

Others point to at least three dozen interviews with Charlotte-area people.

Weise credits North Carolina as the driving force behind her research. She worked in Los Angeles during the early 2000s on issues related to immigrant rights.

She was intrigued to learn undocumented immigrants were obtaining driver licenses in North Carolina, but not her native state of California, widely considered to be more liberal.

“Like so many of us, the history I had been exposed to taught me that all of the racial issues in the United States are in the South,” Weise said, noting her book tries to add context to that narrative.

North Carolina eventually stopped allowing undocumented immigrants from receiving drivers licenses. Recent state legislation also has stalled Charlotte’s efforts to build trust among immigrants and law enforcement.

The city previously directed police not to question a person’s citizenship or immigration status unless there was reasonable suspicion for gang activity or a serious crime. That has since been overruled by state law.

Leaders also looked into the idea of a community card that could be used for transportation and other city services, only for the state to allow law enforcement to use such cards to determine residency.

tween being a welcoming place to immigrants and what the state defines as a sanctuary city that harbors undocumented criminals.

Charlotte City Council received an update Jan. 25 on efforts to better integrate immigrants into the city. The efforts were based on prior recommendations from an Immigrant Integration Task Force.

“They wanted to make sure to keep in mind that anything they were going to ask for the city to do would be something for the benefit of all of Charlotte,” said Alexis Gordon with Neighborhood & Business Services.

The task force looked at programmatic changes, such as providing more support to small businesses, strengthening leadership in neighbor-

hoods with high populations of immigrants and creating an outreach program to disseminate information on fair housing and code enforcement standards.

Some of the recommendations would require collaboration with outside agencies or recommendations that require policy decisions from the council, such as creating economic development strategies or advocating for comprehensive state or national reform.

“When it was just local Southern communities working this out, immigrants fared better,” Weise said of her research. “Once these national politics came into play ... that’s when more antiimmigrant climate came to the South.”

What inspired you to join Ballantyne School of Music?

I came into the business as the parent of guitar student, when it was under its former ownership. I became their “acting business manager” for a period of time. Within a year, there was an opportunity for me to invest in a Ballantyne “branch” of this business, which I ultimately purchased (May 2013) and rebranded as Ballantyne School of Music. I have a degree in business and a background in music, so this was the perfect marriage.

Tell us a little about the school.

Our core business is private music instruction in piano, guitar/bass, drums, vocals and, most recently, violin and brass. ... We have played at venues such as Tremont Music Hall, The Chop Shop and Visulite Theatre. Our Spring Jam performance, which will feature eight student bands, will be on April 24 at Amos' Southend.

How has the school evolved?

Our focus in the past had been on teaching students ages 8 to adult, but we have had a growing interest in music instruction for children ages 3 to 7 the past several years. In

We are focused on developing future musicians - especially songwriters - and are thrilled that we can now offer RealJams Academy Summer Camps here in Charlotte. These camps were developed by our friends at The Real School of Music in Burlington, Massachusetts, and give students the opportunity to write and record original music and create a professional music video. We piloted that program in Charlotte last summer, and our music videos are in the RealJams Top 10 most viewed videos on YouTube. We also performed at the Double Door Inn, which was a true thrill.

Our goal now is to help every student find their own voice, regardless of the instrument they play. We're bringing originality back.

Ballantyne housing project depends on access The approval of a gated subdivision off Community House Road hinges on whether David Weekley Homes can carve a second access point onto the site that agrees with the Charlotte City Council.

The homebuilder proposes 87 houses and townhomes on 15 acres bordering Paradise Ridge Road. The dead-end street is the main artery for The Vineyard, a subdivision with $300,000 and $400,000 homes. “This is an opportunity to create a real interesting and high-value property in this already well-developed portion of the community,� said Walter Fields, a zoning consultant representing David Weekley Homes.  Laura Harmon, assistant planning director for Charlotte, said the project provides a mixture of housing options in a single development. Harmon said city staff would support the proposal with the resolution of a few outstanding issues,

including the addition of a second access point into the subdivision.

City ordinances require two points of access into subdivisions, if feasible. Harmon said a secondary driveway is necessary largely for safety, like allowing access to firefighters and police officers.

Harmon expects secondary access somewhere between Briarwick Lane and Paradise Ridge Road.

City Council is expected to decide on the project in February.

Ed Driggs, who represents the Ballantyne area on the Charlotte City Council, said a connection to Paradise Ridge Road would create problems for him and the residents of the street.

Eric Howard, president of the homeowners association at The Vineyard, said neither the developer or surrounding neighbors want a roadway connection to Paradise Ridge Road. “There are many communities that have a single entrance in and out,� Howard said. “I appreciate the city’s desire to evolve and encourage internal connectivity and decrease traffic con-

Development Briefs Viva Chicken, Panera Bread coming to Waverly project Viva Chicken and Panera Bread are among new fast-casual restaurants going into the 90-acre Waverly development near Providence and Ardrey Kell roads.

Viva Chicken specializes in Peruvian rotisserie chicken marinated with a family recipe.

It chose Waverly for its 3,600-square-foot restaurant for the development’s quality and proximity to I-485, said Tyler Michael, marketing representative.

Viva Chicken opened a Ballantyne location in 2014, with another planned for Park Road and Montford Drive.

Panera Bread will open a 4,000-squarefoot store at Waverly. It will serve sandwiches,

Townhomes approved for Pineville-Matthews Road Charlotte City Council approved a request Jan. 19 from Copper Builders to build 29 townhomes off Pineville-Matthews Road.

The project will replace a vacant church on about 4.5 acres between Rea Road and Windswept Drive. It would be a continuation of the Triveny townhome development, west of the site. “This is the expansion of existing town homes into adjacent derelict land,� City Councilman Ed Driggs said. “It will be a great benefit to the district.�

The developer committed verbally to install buffers and screening toward Paradise Ridge Road before construction gets under way. “This will be the fifth infill-type rezoning that David Weekley Homes has brought before the city council in the last couple of years,� Fields said. “We’ve been gratified that in the four previous occasions, the council thought we had done a good job in working with the community and done a good job with the plan.�

There’s nothing wrong with bandwagon fans I don't know why I still have a Facebook account. Every time I log on, it seems there’s another comment made, article shared or post “liked” that makes my skin crawl.

But it does remind me of my friends’ birthdays, so for that, I am forever grateful Hannah Chronis to Mr. Zuckerberg.

A few days before the Panthers destroyed the Arizona Cardinals to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl, “The Phoenix New Times” – a free, weekly publication serving the greater Phoenix area – released “10 reasons to hate the Carolina Panthers.” It started circling around Facebook like wildfire.

Let me start by saying I’m not the Panthers’ No. 1 fan. I didn't grow up going to games, and I definitely wasn't searching for tickets when they went 2-14 five seasons ago. In fact, I’ve been to more games during the last two seasons combined than I have leading up to those years, and my Instagram account shows more than one picture where I’ve hashtagged something like #keeppounding or #dabonem…. whatever that means.

What the author of the Phoenix New Times article doesn't realize, though, is cheering on the Panthers is bigger than wins and losses. It’s bigger

than wearing a No. 1 jersey. It’s bigger than dabbing and pounding and 45 touchdowns.

It’s about Charlotte – better yet, the entire Carolinas – coming together to support one team in the greatest state in the Union (I’m talking about North Carolina, just incase there’s any confusion).

When the Panthers do well, Charlotte does well, North Carolina does well and South Carolina does well. Small businesses selling NFL gear feel the impact of increased business. Uptown hotels sell out on Saturday nights. Locally owned bars that otherwise would’ve been empty are spilling out the door on Sunday afternoons. People start paying attention to our neck of the woods and realizing Charlotte – and the surrounding area – is a great place to live, work and play.

The dynamics of this city are changing. Charlotte isn’t placed in the same boat as Memphis or Birmingham anymore. It’s now a city of worldclass restaurants, higher education, museums, theater, ballet, gigabit Internet – and if the Panthers success puts a spotlight on our Uptownturned-Carolina-blue as one of the finest cities on the East Coast, I’ll wear my Cam Newton jersey any day.

So when The Phoenix New Times claimed “the Carolinas suck as a location,” “their fans are rednecks” and “their barbecue is overrated” (don’t get me started on that one), instead of sharing such a sad excuse for journalism on my page with a snarky comment, I took a step back and realized that: a) the author is generalizing and insulting an entire population because of a sport, which is just

downright sad and b) he’s clearly never spent any time in North Carolina and for that, I sincerely pity him.

We have booming cities with culture and class like Charlotte and Raleigh. We have hipster cities like Asheville where dreadlocks are more common at work than suits and ties. We have the Outer Banks. We have snow when it’s winter, sun when it’s summer, growth when it’s spring and a myriad of colors and pumpkins and hay rides when it’s fall. We’re the home of Michael Jordan, Earl Scruggs, Andy Griffith, Ava Gardner and Zach Galifianakis. And let’s not forget Bojangles.

Cam Newton and the Panthers are drawing national attention to our great city (and state).

I respect those Panthers fans that have stood behind our hometown team since 1995, and I understand how every Tom, Dick and Harry who claims he’s a Panthers fan is, at the very least, frustrating for those who have been “pounding” since Day 1. But what’s the alternative? A city of folks who don't care, who look away, who don’t buy tickets to sell out the stadium, who let publications like The Phoenix New Times say terrible things about a franchise and its people.

The Panthers’ success is our success, and I hope that on Super Bowl Sunday, every single person in the entire state is decked out in black and blue, and dabbing at every touchdown.

Local dental student helps ‘everyone smile’ New book to encourage healthy dental hygiene in children

Dental student Gary Kersey and attorney Ashley Grisham met while studying at Georgetown University.

Though their fields seldom cross paths, a shared interest in the creative arts led the two on a journey that would later influence children across the globe.

The two friends co-authored “Everyone Smiles,� a children’s book that discusses the diversity of smiles across the world, and how to maintain a healthy and clean smile.

The book was released in February 2015, just in time for National Children’s Dental Health Month. “We’re both very artistic and creative and had a mutual desire to write a children’s book,� Grisham said. “I spent a little time in China working in an orphanage where kids had cleft lip and various other problems with their smile.

We thought, ‘wouldn't it be cool to show the diversity of smiles all over the world?’ and it went from there.�

Since the release of “Everyone Smiles,� Grisham and Kersey embarked on an international book tour to help promote the book, as well as the importance of dental hygiene in children. The book made its way from San Diego all the way down to Jamaica, and is sold at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com and Costco – a big accomplishment for first-time authors. While touring in North Carolina, the authors visited various elementary schools and the Monroe Boys and Girls Club.

For Kersey, a SouthPark resident, a smile is a powerful tool that not only helps children make connections, but also build confidence. “The smile is the integral first introduction a child can

make with another,� he said. “The power of the smile speaks to the mouth's capability of serving as a global symbol of kindness, tolerance and positive curiosity. All of these are vital aspects of community building that children can learn, not by being told, but rather by being shown.�

Not only does the book focus on proper dental care, it also explores racial, gender and cultural differences through its illustrations to give children a picture of the world’s diversity. “We want the book to be read and viewed in an interactive way,� Grisham said. “We’ve visited everywhere from small towns where most families are middle class, to places where there might be only one dentist for an entire zip code and there’s a lack of accessibility. �

The authors said the book has been well received so far.

Ultimately, they hope its message will continue to spread across the world and encourage children to embrace their smile, while challenging adults to focus on the importance of dental health.

Website offers free ‘clean’ diet plan, workouts

With all the fad diets out there, it’s hard to find one that’s easy to stick to.

That’s the inspiration behind Clean Eats 101, a lifestyle website founded by local women.

Certified nutritionist Macy Covington and Union County resident Leigh Smoak teamed up to create a website that offers free nutrition advice and exercise plans. The site focuses on “clean� eating, which Smoak refers to as the “least amount of processing as possible.�

A few years ago, Smoak found Covington’s small peer group online, where she posted clean recipes. “I had been following what she was cooking for 6 to 8 months,� Smoak said.

Smoak was a stay-at-home mom, who had tried many other diets, but wasn’t finding the results she wanted and a plan she could stick to. After following Covington’s recipes, she felt better and realized it was a diet she could retain.

The two women connected and shared their passion for clean eating, resulting in their website, Clean Eats 101, which launched in May 2015. “I want to spread the word about clean eating and how it has really changed my outlook on healthy living,�

Smoak said.

The website includes three features: more than 300 “clean� recipes; about 45 workouts, including a 21-day workout program for those wanting to kick start their exercise plan; and a grocery cart function that allows users to select recipes for the week and the site combines all ingredients into a consolidated shopping list.

The women want the site to be easy, realistic and managable for the average person, Smoak said.

They encourage users to start an 80/20 diet plan, in which they’re eating 80 percent clean meals, so they can live without guilt or a feeling of defeat.

Smoak said she made small changes when initially starting the program, such as swapping a bag of chips for an apple or making her own spaghetti sauce, and felt energized. She naturally wanted to start exercising again after changing her diet.

Smoak encourages new users to start small and set realistic goals, such as swapping a salad for a meal once of week. “Little things can make a difference,� she said.

The women will continue posting new recipes and workouts weekly and expect to include yoga workouts in February.

Sara’s Y to become Ballantyne’s community hub Greater Charlotte YMCA’s latest branch slated for March opening

BALLANTYNE – Imagine a fitness center where south Charlotte residents can not only get a work out in, but also network, enjoy a healthy lunch and connect with the professional community. That’s what the folks at YMCA of Greater Charlotte had in mind when breaking ground on Sara’s YMCA, located in Ballantyne Corporate Park at the corner of Ballantyne Corporate Place and Brixham Hill Avenue.

The 24,000-square-foot-facility, which is more than twice the size of Ballantyne Village YMCA, will be open to guests 16 years old and older. Along with open and expansive cardio, weight training and TRX suspension training spaces, Sara’s YMCA also will feature a large group exercise studio that connects to an outdoor workout area, a mind/body garden, personal training room, spacious locker rooms and a yoga studio designed for hot yoga, as well as specialty classes, such as barre and pilates.

The age restriction will differentiate Sara’s Y from neighboring Morrison Family YMCA, which targets young children and families.

“We really want this to be a place where people can come, whether you work in the Corporate Park or live in the area, and not only work out, but have a healthy lunch or network with people in the community,” said Brian Vest, senior membership director of YMCA of Greater Charlotte.

Sara’s Y was designed to capitalize on the natural beauty of the Corporate Park, featuring wall-to-wall glass windows. Exercise equipment will face the windows, so guests will have expansive views of the Park, instead of other equipment. To enhance the Y’s connection to the outdoors, Sara’s Y also will feature a “fitness yard” which Vest describes as an “adult playground.” The outdoor space will connect to the interior fitness center via a garage door, allowing members to work out on specialty outdoor fitness equipment. Vest said the idea behind the outdoor space is to allow business professionals the opportunity to exercise in a natural setting, since many spend all day in an

“It’s something really unique that we’re offering at this location,” Vest said. “We’re excited about it.”

The yoga studio is another point of pride for the future Y. Instead of sharing the space with other group fitness classes, the yoga studio is a separate room specifically designed to heat and cool for hot yoga. Once completed, it will have wall-to-wall mirrors for barre classes, specialized flooring to help ventilate the space, and a designated “entryway” designed to give guests the full yoga studio experience.

As of this year, YMCA members now have access to not only other branches in the Greater Charlotte region, but across the state. If a guest usually works out at Sara’s YMCA but is traveling to Raleigh on business, they will have access to the Raleigh branches as well.

Sara’s YMCA is slated for completion in March. Ballantyne Village YMCA will remain open until then.

Politicians have done the hard thing, now it’s up to us

Three times in the last week I’ve read articles pontificating on the subject of the “Christian� vote. Each of these opinion pieces labeled various groups within the Christian faith and identified “their� candidate. This prompts some questions – and some opinMark Harris ions – of my own.

Here’s the first question: By what means were these groups of Christians connected to “their� candidate? The author’s opinion? Surveys? Polls?

Without cited evidence clearly demonstrating that a particular religious sub-group is supporting a particular primary candidate, there is no validity to the belief that Christians who admire Franklin Graham are going to vote for Donald Trump or that attendees of less-than-orthodox Protestant churches are going to vote for Bernie Sanders.

Second question: Is there a hidden political agenda behind these alleged pairings? The Marco Rubio campaign seized upon remarks by Russell Moore of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention printed in “Roll Call� Jan. 8, in which Moore

paired Trump with the “Jimmy Swaggert� wing of the GOP, Cruz with the “Jerry Falwell� wing, and Rubio with the “Billy Graham� wing. Just two hours after the publication of Moore’s remarks, the Rubio campaign issued an email including Moore’s quote. While it is doubtful Moore was in collusion with Rubio’s campaign, it is odd that the numbers of self-identified evangelical GOP voters who have told pollsters they support Trump would be labeled with the name of a disgraced televangelist as their descriptor.

While I am not a Trump supporter, I find this characterization unfair and Moore’s evidence for it – that Trump attracts Pentecostals who believe God financially rewards believers – unsupportable.

Also quoting Moore in a “Charlotte Observer� op-ed was history professor Thomas S. Kidd of Baylor University. In his piece “Ted Cruz Exposes a Christian Divide,� accessible at www.charlot teobserver.com/opinion/op-ed/article54951935. html, Kidd quotes Moore’s analysis of the GOP factions and adds his own. Kidd asserts that Cruz has “exposed fractures� between different kinds of evangelicals. Kidd concludes his analysis by calling on Moore’s “Graham� wing to remind Cruz that the glory of God and the salvation of sinners will never happen through electoral victories or earthly governments. Interestingly, this same piece has appeared in various newspapers with much harsher Cruz-bashing headlines, according to posts on Kidd’s Facebook page. Kidd’s Facebook page also includes a post announcing

fantasies of the heroic things we might do if we lose our freedom. Every candidate for president has done the hard thing: put his or her name on a ballot and embrace the grueling marathon that is our modern political campaign. The least we can do is reject simplistic labels designed to discourage and marginalize us as believers and thoughtfully select a candidate to support.

Political agendas aside, I have a major problem with Kidd’s logic. Ted Cruz, nor anyone else running for president, is claiming that his or her election will usher in the Kingdom of God or save sinners. This is a straw man – a refutation of an argument not actually being advanced by an opponent. This particular straw man is frequently put forth by those who think Christians, or at least Christians who don’t support their preferred candidate, belong on the sidelines of civic life.

You can dress a straw man in elegant clothes, even perhaps in clerical robes, but at the end of the day, he is still made of straw.

The issue is not whether electing a particular candidate will accomplish God’s ultimate redemptive purpose for mankind. The issue is whether or not a believer in God’s ultimate redemptive purpose still has a responsibility to exercise his civic duty in a free Republic according to his or her conscience. I sometimes hear from people who dramatically announce they are ready to go to jail for their faith, or flee the United States. I always want to shake these people by the shoulders and ask them if they have voted in a primary, given any candidate their financial support, or attended a precinct meeting. Exactly three people from my precinct attended the Mecklenburg County GOP precinct meeting last year: myself, my wife, and one other lady who was getting involved for the first time after reading Dr. Ben Carson’s book “One Nation.�

District seeks to give schools more independence

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools might loosen the reins and allow individual schools more freedom in making choices to achieve district goals.

Frank Barnes, CMS chief accountability officer, presented a developed accountability, or school performance, framework to the CMS Board of Education at its Jan. 12 meeting. The presentation discussed how district staff hopes to give principals more flexibility based on the individual school’s needs.

Barnes said staff wanted to decentralize some policies and adapt a “performance culture,” in which teachers, particularly more seasoned educators, are valued based on progress and achievement.

Staff met with various stakeholders, including educators, parents and students, to determine what they felt were indicators of performance, including seven performance areas, which are weighted differently based on school level. They also sought to base performance on proficiency and progress goals equally.

“We want to acknowledge absolute performance, but also look at progress,” Barnes said.

The “partial-credit” method allows a school’s performance to be valued based half on achievement goals and half on the amount

of progress the school made overall. The state’s school performance grades are based 80 percent on achievement and 20 percent on growth.

Through the accountability model, staff also wants to provide greater flexibility to individual schools to carry out accountability methods. Some autonomy would need to be “earned” by schools, Barnes said.

Staff seeks to increase flexibility in teacher evaluation, teacher support and staffing interventions. Principals are currently limited in their ability to swap teacher and TAs positions.

CMS Superintendent Ann Clark bolstered a push for an “opportunity culture,” in which teachers who wish to stay in the classroom can be placed in teacher-leadership positions.

She gave an example of a third-grade math teacher moving into a teacher-leader position to impact all third-graders through curriculum or other resources.

“We’re creating an opportunity for additional compensation for (teachers) that have demonstrated a history of success with students,” Clark said.

BOE member Ruby Jones shared concerns about CMS swapping media specialists for “opportunity culture” positions, as well as technology and academic facilitators.

Thirty-one CMS schools have libraries not led by a media specialist, and Jones voiced concerns over whether the libraries programs were being neglected as a result of “trading”

those positions. She urged for media specialists to move back into schools of children in poverty to help increase reading and research skills for those students. Twenty-one of the 31 schools without a media specialist are high-poverty schools.

Clark said the exchanges are on a year-toyear basis and rely on student achievement results.

The superintendent said trading teacher positions currently is cost-neutral, but could become a greater cost if the state continues to limit districts’ flexibility on staffing choices.

Barnes said staff also wants schools that demonstrate success to be able to earn the freedom to trade some positions, as state law allows, as well as the freedom to choose “tiered” student interventions and supports for academic and behavioral goals.

The “tiers” refer to additional supports a student needs to accomplish his academic or behavioral goals; tier 1 would be what all students need to succeed and tier 2 would be additional guidance or support to help the student achieve, plus the initial steps in tier 1.

Staff plans to continue to look into specific areas the district can provide flexibility based on schools’ needs and how state legislators can affect its ability to provide some autonomy.

Barnes said staff will monitor this school year’s performance and analyze which areas need improvement and where schools might be able to earn autonomy.

South Charlotte Principal Dan Siftar nominated Matusiak. The teacher has more than 14 years of teaching experience and helps her students grasp complex math concepts through relevant lessons.

“Matusiak knows the impact that a really great teacher can have on students,” Siftar said in the release. “She desires to continue working directly with students while still finding ways to influence and coach other teachers. She is fully dedicated to being the best educator she can be, and the thousands of students that have sat in her classroom would say the same.”

Matusiak also is the leader of her school’s math professional learning committee and, as math department chair, she has made it her goal to improve the math program across all grade levels.

Matusiak is one of 16 finalists to be selected to receive cash awards. The grand prize award is $10,000.

Clark said the district is poised to determine its â&#x20AC;&#x153;value systemâ&#x20AC;? for assigning its students. The student assignment plan has been on many parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; minds for the past few months â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some pushing for better school options in high-poverty areas, while others contest the idea of leaving their home schools.

The superintendent believes this is the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chance to discern whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s schools, particularly looking at equity and diversity as the school system forms the plan.

Clark believes itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s especially critical since the plan isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t required by a judge or court order, but rather based on the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own desire to do whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right for its students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is our moment for our kids,â&#x20AC;? Clark said.

She invites the community stay engaged in the conversation regarding the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decisions, which will include more community conversations and survey, which opens Jan. 29.

Setting the bar higher

Clark wants to prepare students for life beyond high school, whether thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a university or career pathway. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Public education is one of the foundations of America,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are preparing every child for a successful future â&#x20AC;Ś Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a commitment of CMS to provide an excellent education for every student.â&#x20AC;?

To ensure students are prepared for life beyond CMS, Clark calls for another graduation requirement â&#x20AC;&#x201C; higher-level skills or credentials.

She wants every senior to graduate with an AP credit, an IB diploma or an â&#x20AC;&#x153;industry credential.â&#x20AC;?

CMSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s graduation rate has increased dramatically since 2010, but Clark wants to ensure that diploma is meaningful and the district knows the graduate is prepared life after high school.

more teachers are leaving the state and fewer young people are pursuing the profession, keeps her awake at night. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Keep pounding on behalf of our teachers and future teachers,â&#x20AC;? she encouraged the room. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have to take charge of our destiny as a community and send a signal that coming to teach in Charlotte is a good way to go.â&#x20AC;?

Clark said teachers should have additional housing options, as well as Internet packages, and the faith community should step up to offer child care. She added the next few months will be critical in determining how the community will send a positive message to future and current teachers.

CMS needs community support

Clark said community partnerships can help remove barriers for learning. She urged for more help from faith institutions, businesses and community members to help make a difference in childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lives.

CMSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s successful community partnerships in the last year include the ONE Access program with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library, where students can check out public library books with their student ID. The program received national recognition last week at the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital for its efforts to increase literacy and student access to book.

Read Charlotte, a nonprofit devoted to increasing the number of CMS third-graders reading on grade level, also has served to help Clarkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;North Starâ&#x20AC;? of literacy. Read Charlotte provided a brand new book to every Title I Pre-kindergartener through third-grader to provide greater access to books.

Executive Director Munro Richardson began at Read Charlotte in 2014, after moving from Kansas City. He said he moved here not only to take a job, but to make â&#x20AC;&#x153;an incredible impact.â&#x20AC;?

Clark hopes more community partners want to make the same impact, even if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a financial contribution, but one of mentorship.

He will be the first in his family to attend college and was in no position to afford it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was afraid of not being able to make it,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would have gave into that fear if I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have people around me to support me.â&#x20AC;?

He hopes to carry on the notion with Nicson and encourage him not to give into fear of failure, as well as encouraged others to become involved with young people to help alleviate that apprehension.

Clark believes the involvement of community partners is â&#x20AC;&#x153;substantialâ&#x20AC;? to CMS and its success of meeting familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs.

Latin boys persevere through adversity

From the outside looking in, the situation appeared to be dire for Charlotte Latin’s boys’ basketball team early in the season. The Hawks stumbled to a 1-6 start, but recovered to reel off 10 wins in their last 12 games. The turnaround came when they stormed back from an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Clover, 61-59 in overtime, Dec. 11.

At 11-8 (3-1 CISAA), Latin is tied with Cannon for second place in the conference standings, and will move ahead of the Cougars if it takes care of business at Country Day, and if Providence Day wins Friday, Jan. 29.

A league title might be too tall of an order, considering they would have to upset the Chargers Tuesday, Feb. 2 and sweep Cannon, but the Hawks can certainly make some noise in the state playoffs if given the opportunity.

They have the senior leadership, the shooters and mental toughness to compete with anyone and to make things interesting, at the very least.

“I’m real excited about our guys,” Charlotte Latin coach Chris Berger said. “Every coach wants their team to be playing their best basketball in January and February. I really feel like this team has grown up before our eyes. It took us a while to get warmed up, especially in November and December.”

Berger said his team improved dramatically on the defensive end and in rebounding, which has enabled it to deny opponents scoring opportunities, and giving it more chances to put the ball in basket.

Latin is led by its six seniors, including cocaptain and forward Parker Julian (16 ppg) and co-captain and guard Caleb Jordan (15 ppg). Junior forward Bates Jones (14 ppg) also has been a key component to the Hawks’ success.

Berger said the goal for this team is to give its seniors as many opportunities as possible to don their Latin uniforms.

The Chargers are rolling through CISAA competition.

Providence Day girls improved to 19-2 (5-0 CISAA) with a 52-23 win over Charlotte Christian (12-7, 2-2 CISAA) Jan. 26, and it appears they won’t get challenged again until the later rounds of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state playoffs.

Just to clarify of how far superior Providence Day is to the rest of its conference foes, it beat second place Covenant Day, 63-17, Jan. 25, and led 17-0 in the first quarter.

The win over Covenant Day was the first time the Chargers had four players score in double figures. Senior forward Erin Whalen scored a gamehigh 18 points, while junior center Janelle Bailey added 12 points, and junior forward Emilie Smith and sophomore guard Kennedy Boyd chipped in 10 points apiece.

If Providence Day can get additional scoring from players outside of Bailey and Whalen, who have carried the bulk of that load this season, it will be even tougher to beat.

“We’re really trying to share the ball, and look at second and third options on offensive sets,” said coach Josh Springer said.

“I really think our players have the maturity to understand that they know there’s certain things we’ve got to get a lot better at. It’s embracing the idea of practice every day and attacking those weaknesses to turn them into strengths.”

The players are doing a good job of understanding and embracing their individual roles, which makes Providence Day stronger as a team.

Whalen and her teammates know Providence Day has a bull’s eye on its back, which is motivation for them to be at their best night-in and nightout.

Providence Day’s “Play4Kay” breast cancer awareness fundraiser, which was originally scheduled for Jan. 22, was postponed due to inclement weather, and moved to Friday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. when the Chargers host Country Day. This is the 10th year in a row Providence Day has participated in the program, which is in conjunction with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation.

They hope to raise $2,000 for this initiative.

Providence Day’s boys’ basketball team hasn’t been challenged in nearly three weeks since its 74-67 win over Cannon, but fortunately for the Chargers, coach Brian Field challenged his team with a tough nonconference slate that will prepare them for the rigors of playoffs.

The Chargers (22-3, 5-0 CISAA) played several programs that are in the national spotlight, including Oak Hill, Wesleyan Christian Academy, Word of God, High Point Christian Academy and Greensboro Day. Since then, Providence Day has done what it’s supposed to do, and that’s trample its competition. Most recently, the Chargers devoured league foes Charlotte Christian, 83-57, Jan. 26 and Covenant Day, 78-57, the night before.

However, Providence Day struggled to tame the Lions until midway through the third quarter. Covenant Day only trailed by three at the end of the first quarter, and trimmed its 13-point halftime deficit down to seven to start the third quarter before Field called a timeout.

The Chargers responded with two three pointers to create the separation they needed to cruise to a decisive victory.

“Right at the end of the first half and the last five minutes of the third quarter I thought we pushed it out nicely,” Field said. “It starts defensively, and I thought we rebounded the ball well.”

Field said he was frustrated with his team’s 16 turnovers, but was pleased with their shooting (65 percent).

Providence Day continues to get stellar play out of senior forwards Josh Howard (25 points against Covenant Day), Isaac Johnson (15 points against Covenant Day), Grant Williams (15 points against Covenant Day) and sophomore guard Devon Dotson (11 points against Covenant Day).

Despite all of their talent, the Chargers have maintained a strong sense of team and avoided a “me-first” mentality.

“We share the ball really well,” Field said. “We have different guys who can all be the leading scorer every night. All five starters average double figures. I think the fact that collectively we buy in to the team-first attitude is what I’m most proud of.”
