As seen on TV: Region proves popular among film industry

Being the new kid in high school has been a contributing factor of teen angst for generations, and it’s the premise behind “Ashby.” South Charlotte movie fans might find the teen comedy even more relatable, considering scenes were filmed at South Mecklenburg High School.

“Ashby,” released last month on DVD, is among dozens of movies and television shows filmed in Charlotte.

Local movie fans probably noticed Tony Robbins explaining the virtues of inner beauty to Jason Alexander’s superficial character in front of the Morrocroft Centre in the Jack Black comedy, “Shallow Hal.” They also might have realized the Grand Canyon portrayed in the Ed Helms comedy “Vacation” looked an awful lot like the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

The Charlotte Regional Film Commission works to recruit productions to the 16-county region by showcasing the diversity of its landscapes and landmarks.

Beth Petty, director of the film commission, attributes the region’s popularity among location scouts to its ability to double as other areas of the world.

When “The Hunger Games” needed a futuristic, apocalyptic environment, Petty’s office helped connect the production to the 2,100-acre Philip Morris campus

in Concord.

“I knew the Philip Morris facility was closed at that point and they were unbelievably helpful and supportive in helping recruit that movie here,” Petty said. “This was the hook in bringing ‘The Hunger Games’ to the region. That was their hub.”

While some location requests require outside-the-box thinking, other productions might need shots of a particular style house or neighborhood.

South Charlotte has a rich selection of single-family homes. A house in the Mountain Brook neighborhood received a lot of local media attention after it was used on the Showtime series, “Homeland.”

“We get requests for every type of house,” Petty said.

Sometimes the film commission will coordinate with towns to close a road or work with homeowners to ensure that Christmas decorations are removed for a scene set in the fall.

“I can’t say enough about how filmfriendly this community is,” Petty said.

Available film sites The Charlotte Regional Film Commission maintains an online database of places that location scouts can browse through.

“We have thousands of thousands of pictures of locations, but we never have enough,” Director Beth Petty said. “No matter how well you have it covered, there’s always something new to discover.”

Visitors to the commission’s website, www.charlot tefilm.com, can offer their property for filming consideration.

‘Book of Mormon’ pushes the envelope, but leaves audiences laughing

Blumenthal Performing Arts brought the “most amazing book” to audiences this week with “The Book of Mormon” at Belk Theater.

The production was full of hilarious one-liners and outrageous characters and references; however, I wouldn’t recommend the show to those easily offended. The religious satire musical makes fun of Mormons, Christianity, faith, Africans and many more along the way, and does contain explicit language.

“Book of Mormon” tells the story of two freshfaced Mormon missionaries, Elder Price (played

by Ryan Bondy) and Elder Cunningham (played

by Cody Jamison Strand), who are sent to Uganda for their two-year mission trip. Price, who is the star missionary, wanted to be sent to Orlando, while Cunningham, who is a nerdy, compulsive liar, is happy to finally have a friend.

Price and Cunningham don’t go to “The Lion King’s” savannah. They end up in a impoverished village, led by a local warlord with a not-sowholesome name, who is tyrannical and obsessed with female genital mutilation. The two elders join a group of fellow elders already stationed in Uganda in hopes of converting the villagers to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The show was written by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of the crude television show, “South Park,” and Robert Lopez, co-composer of the edgy musical “Avenue Q,” so the musical was bound to push the envelope.

But the production value and talent throughout the show was so outstanding, you become numb to the constant cursing and vulgar actions and references.

Don’t misunderstand me – “Book of Mormon” is filled with inappropriate, outlandish acts, but you almost forgive the offensive comments and over-the-top sets and allusions with how well the show is carried out.

“Book of Mormon” takes satire to a new level, and does the category justice. Satire makes fun of everything, but still leaves you feeling not so scorned when it’s enveloped in well-choreographed numbers. I don’t think the show would have been as enjoyable if each moment wasn’t

done well, as it would have appeared tactless. The show brings so much energy and great comedic timing that you can have a fun time watching.

The dancing in “Turn It Off” and "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream" (that apparently every Mormon has when they sin) was precise and well done and became a glimmering extravaganza on stage.

Daston Bloomquist, who plays district leader Elder McKinley that has repressed homosexual thoughts, was a standout. He played his role so well, with great physicality and commitment to his role, and was one of my favorite voices.

The leads, Strand and Bondy, gave a great juxtaposition and provided the over-the-top energy each character needed – particularly Strand.

Strand gave Elder Cunningham this shrill voice that pushed the edge of being too annoying, but really added to his character’s composition.

Candace Quarrels, who plays the village chief’s daughter Nabulungi (pronounced Nah-boolung-ee), had an eloquence that rivaled the best in the show. She sang beautifully in "Sal Tlay Ka Siti" (Salt Lake City), dreaming of what she believes is a paradise from her war-torn village.

“Book of Mormon” is a critically, acclaimed show that has won nine Tony awards, including “Best Musical,” but might give some apprehension because of its crude reputation. Despite many stereotyped references to Mormonism, especially in the show’s start with “Hello!” in which missionaries act out door-to-door attempts of conversion (which was spot on to my personal experiences), the show does end with a warm feeling about faith and holding on to beliefs.

This show is not appropriate for children and probably most teens, even if your teen watches “South Park.” “The Book of Mormon” is what “South Park” would be if it didn’t have any FCC restrictions and was on satellite radio.

The juvenile, crude humor in the television show is taken up a few notches, but I felt it didn’t take away from enjoying a well-done show.

If audiences are ready for a laugh from edgy, off-the-wall comedy, this might be for you.

News Briefs CPPC Foundation creates William M. Claytor Scholarship Central Piedmont Community College Foundation has created a scholarship to honor Charlotte attorney William M. Claytor, former chairman of the board of trustees. The scholarship will be an annual, full-tuition grant for one student per year.

William M. Claytor Claytor served as a trustee from 1977 to 1993. He chaired the board from 1985 to 1993 and also served multiple terms as board vice president.

“This scholarship is a fitting tribute to Bill Claytor in recognition of his nearly 40 years of selfless service to the college as a foundation director and trustee,” said Patricia Rodgers, president of the CPCC Foundation Board of Directors. “The William M. Claytor Scholarship will be a lasting symbol of our deep gratitude to Bill for all he has done for CPCC.” Claytor is a partner at Baucom, Claytor, Benton, Morgan & Wood. He is a long-time supporter of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, and has served in the leadership of St. Johns Baptist Church. “The characteristics of the sport brings out the best in a person,” Keeter said. “Opportunities opened up, and now I’ve traveled the world playing tennis.”

Keeter helped pay it forward by launching Carolina Rollin’ Rackets, in partnership with the Rock Hill Tennis Center and Mid-Carolina Tennis Association.

“If I could get people to learn the sport, I know they would get more than tennis out of it. When you’re in a wheelchair, you need a social network to alleviate the stress and anxiety that comes with having a disability,” Keeter said. “Tennis builds self confidence so people no longer feel helpless. Rollin’ Rackets brings smiles, determination and grit to people who were dejected. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

Heart Math Tutoring hopes to raise $750K by June 30 Heart Math Tutoring, a nonprofit dedicated to helping high-poverty students develop math skills and academic confidence, has launched a funding initiative to double its partners for the 2016-17 school year. The organization hopes to raise $750,000 by June 30 to expand its service and support 750 students and 860 volunteers across 15 schools.

To date, $335,000 has been raised from grants, corporation donations and from community support.

“We greatly appreciate the financial support received to date and are excited about

our spring funding initiative, knowing it will enable us to bring the program to even more students this coming school year,” said Emily Elliott, executive director of Heart Math Tutoring. “We have a track record of growing fast and consistently, retaining and keeping volunteers, and generating strong student outcomes. As Heart grows, so must our family of funding partners.”

Sixty percent of economically disadvantaged students in CMS perform below grade level in math. Heart uses researchbased assessments and provides volunteer-friendly lesson plans that target the gaps of each individual student. So far, 97 percent of students tutored by Heart have met program growth goals set in partnership with CMS. Since 2013-14, Hearth Math has grown from serving 105 students to more than 400 across eight schools.

Annual Charity League Fashion Show to benefit at-risk children Charity League of Charlotte will host its 35th annual fashion show and silent auction fundraiser on March 17, a Thursday, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Carmel Country Club.

Emmy-winning anchor and investigative reporter Molly Grantham will serve as the emcee. Rince Na h’Eireann, Charlotte’s school of Irish Dance, will present dances in full Celtic style.

Under its “Little People Big Needs” program, the Charity League helps at-risk students by providing 16 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and representatives at local hospitals with uniforms, backpacks and school supplies.

Development Briefs Henderson Properties adds nine to homeowners portfolio CHARLOTTE – Henderson Properties has expanded its portfolio by signing nine new homeowners and community associations, including Ardrey Woods in Ballantyne area.

The single-family community includes 216 homes, a pool, clubhouse and walking trails.

Salon coming to Sharon Square CHARLOTTE – Denise Antonacci Salon will open a 1,500-square-foot space later this year in Sharon Square.

“Sharon Square is an in ideal setting for our salon and clientele,” Denise Antonacci said in a press release. “The character, walkability and easy access of Sharon Square were very appealing to us and set it apart from other locations that we considered.”

The salon, which operates under the Jon Ric name, is moving to Sharon Square as part of its re-branding.

Ardrey Kell brings classic ‘Mary Poppins’ to life on stage

Audiences can grab a “spoonful of sugar” next week when Ardrey Kell High School performs the musical “Mary Poppins.”

The stage performance differs from the 1964 Disney movie, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, with different songs and characters, but some of the favorites are included.

The play will be director Brian Seagroves’s first musical, and he chose it to take on a challenge.

Mary Poppins often flies with her umbrella in the air as her form of travel, and making her appear to do so on stage would be a tall task.

“The question was, ‘How do we make things fly in a space that has no fly system?’ Other schools that do things with flying or magic, they have a fly system or they go a theater that has one,” Seagroves said.

Instead of moving to a new space, Seagroves suggested a concept to a group of physics students that he said combines a moving sidewalk with an escalator. The “Flight Crew,” as they’re affectionately called, has created a machine that makes Mary look like she’s flying.

After the school’s production of “42nd Street” won five Blumeys last year, including “Best Musical,” Seagroves and fellow theater teacher Terry Garbbard were ready to take on a different kind of musical that has many moving parts.

“It’s a really good story about family and it’s not something you can get from the other fairy tale-type of shows. There is a lot more deeper and darker stuff in the show,” Seagorves said. “…It seemed like a challenge and it was an experience we want to try.”

Both Gabbard and Seagroves frame the theater department as not producing stereotypical high school theater shows, but one with a more professional vibe.

“I feel like saying something is ‘high school theater’ is an excuse to do something poorly and I’ve never been a person to justify a poor performance or poor production,” Seagroves said. “…

As a director, I want the productions, the pictures and the experiences we create on stage to be professional and rival anything in Charlotte – on a high school stage, a community college stage, a university stage or even at Equity Playhouse stage. I want to challenge that mold.”

theater debut as Bert, the lovable, carefree chimney sweep, who plays the narrator and far-away friend of Mary and the Banks children.

He calls Bert a “guardian angel” and said he’s enjoyed playing the fun character.

Senior Haley Stone plays the title character, who she describes as a “complicated” and “contradictory” character. Stepping into the iconic shoes of Julie Andrews isn’t easy, and Haley said she’s felt a little pressure along the way.

“I’m trying to do the character justice,” Haley said. “How do you describe Mary? Is she an angel?”

Haley said “Feed the Birds” and “Spoonful of Sugar (Reprise)” are her favorite songs in the show. She called “Birds” the more underrated song of the show, as it shares a positive message about not judging people by first impressions.

The reprise, which she sings at the end of the show, is a nostalgic moment for Haley, as her character bids goodbye to Michael and Jane in the show, the actress said she’s reminded of her departure from Ardrey Kell.

Seagroves hopes to bring nostalgia and a sense of whimsy to the stage next week.

“We create the magic. There’s magic in the show and we create the magic here,” Seagroves said. “It is a dream sequence. It’s like watching a movie on stage. When you come to see the show, you’re going to be locked in. What you see, hear and witness will be one of the most magical nights you’ve had as a adult, as a child, as a student, as a grandparent.”

Even though the “Mary Poppins” cast believes they’ll give a great performance next week, they still want to contribute more to the community. Throughout February, the fine arts department will host its third book drive for area first-graders. More than 35 first-graders from Pineville and Stoney Creek elementary schools will attend a special performance of “Mary Poppins” on March 4 and will take home at least one brand new book and will meet the characters of the show.

Ardrey Kell will perform “Mary Poppins” Thursday through Saturday, March 3 to 5, at 7 p.m. each night, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Saturday at the school.

Board passes student assignment goals without ‘neighborhood schools’ provision

Much to the dismay of many south Charlotte parents, the phrase “neighborhood schools” won’t be found in five student assignment goals the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education (BOE) approved Tuesday in a 7-to-1 vote.

The board voted solely on the non-ranked five goals, which were slightly adjusted at the Feb. 11 Policy Committee meeting, but not the five-paragraph preamble of convoluted language “explaining” the purpose of the goals.

District 1 member Rhonda Lennon was the sole adversary because she wanted the neighborhood schools provision within the goals; however, other members felt adding the term would be “prescriptive.” The current student assignment guiding principles retain neighborhood schools.

Many board members called the goals “aspirational benchmarks” of targets the BOE wants to hit with its student assignment guidelines. Policy Committee members started the goals in December to serve as “guardrails” to create the plan and as items to give to the consultant, who would develop the plan from those objectives.

The meeting chamber was filled with parents donning green shirts and signs that read “Save our neighborhood schools” and “#nobusing.”

“The public and I don’t understand ‘aspirational,’” Lennon said. “Neighborhood schools don’t mean that diversity is wrong. Until, we say, ‘We are not going to send kids on busing schemes and we do support neighborhood schools,’ I don’t think the public is going to believe us.”

Lennon said the “neighborhood schools” provision should be added because she wanted eliminate the public’s fear that their child would be bused across town.

District 5 member Eric Davis presented an amendment to the fifth goal listed, referring to retaining achieving and successful schools and programs, which would add the phrase “such as the proximity home school seat guaranteed” to the end. Parents cheered for the amendment, but the excitement fell on deaf ears, as the amendment was struck down in a 2-to-6 vote, with

Lennon and Davis in favor.

“I don’t think anyone here wants to make 1970s busing happen, but we do have tremendous awareness that we do have tremendous amounts of poverty,” Vice Chairperson Elyse Dashew said. “We’ve reached a point where out of 50 of the biggest cities in American, we’re 50th in poverty mobility. It means you’re most likely to be trapped in poverty more than any part of American. That’s a problem that affects all of us.”

Davis said he acknowledged the need to help the high concentrations of poverty throughout the county, but he didn’t want to help those students

at the expense of schools that are “working.”

Some board members said they felt the goals alleviated concerns of the parents rooting for neighborhood schools.

District 3 member Ruby Jones pointed to one goal urging for “effective transportation,” which she said implies the district will not “do miles and miles and miles of busing.” She also said she felt the phrase “neighborhood schools” was vague and would ultimately be disrupted by increased overcrowding, anyway.

At-large member Ericka Ellis-Stewart said she believes the board doesn’t have the ability to

“make everyone happy,” but she wanted to alleviate isolation in schools based on race and socioeconomic status.

Lennon said CMS wasn’t the only solution to helping students of poverty, pointing to drawing the community to help the entire impoverished community.

“You cannot fix generational poverty with a student assignment plan,” she said. “You have to engage the community to fix the problem.”

The next policy committee will be March 10 at 6 p.m. in Room 267, at the Government Center, located at 600 E. 4th St.

Problems with Charlotte’s non-discrimination ordinance

Lately North Carolina’s legislators have come under attack for taking steps to defend traditional marriage and religious liberty. The religious liberty exemption for magistrates is under attack, and criticism swelled around the very thought of the Mark Harris legislature intervening in the just-passed Charlotte city ordinance defining LGBTQ as a protected class and permitting transgender people to use their bathroom of choice, whether they present as the opposite sex or not. As George Will aptly noted, the “sore winners” of the gay rights movement will not rest until every American is forced to endorse the gay lifestyle and all of its increasingly confusing associations as to gender “fluidity.”

Political battles aside, who are the real losers here? As a follower of Christ, I can only define my concerns in terms of what happens with real people. The terrible loss to real people in real-life situations is enormous when government attempts to intervene to forcibly change cultural norms. Consider the following examples regarding situations that will be impacted by the new Charlotte city ordinance, and the unintended

consequences that will result.

Super Bowl Sunday, as always on Sunday nights from Decmeber to March, First Baptist Church hosted “Room in the Inn,” in which we shelter homeless guests from Urban Ministries in our facilities. A co-ed Sunday School class volunteered that night to prepare and serve dinner, assist, and provide breakfast and sack lunches for the departing guests. Two men stayed overnight, including one First Baptist employee. On this evening, a transgender person was part of the group who is anatomically male but dresses as female. Female guests at the shelter, a vulnerable and fragile population, expressed their discomfort with the situation. A compassionate resolution was reached in which those directly involved in the situation were able to assess it, make decisions, and take into account the feelings and concerns of all involved.

If this particular event had occurred after April 1, 2016, when the city ordinance goes into effect, my church could have been subjected to a fine or lawsuit if this transgender individual had demanded access to the women’s locker room and been denied. Does anyone know how “denial” will be construed legally? If this individual had been asked to wait until all the other ladies finished and then allowed to use the locker room, would that still constitute a denial? Because of the vague nature of the ordinance, its practical application will play out in the court system. An unintended consequence of this ordinance is the undue pressure and angst that will arise for compassionate and caring people using their time and

Mark Blackwell of Justice Ministries, whom I wrote about in a previous column, testified at the council meeting that this ordinance places a strain on his organization, which offers rescue and shelter to victims of human trafficking. He stated before the council that his ministry works with LGBTQ individuals, but that the rigidity of the ordinance regarding access for anatomically opposite sex transgender persons will burden his organization financially, and more importantly, like the above example, removes his ability to assess a situation in regard to all involved, including women who have been traumatized and victimized by sexual crimes. The judgment of compassionate people has been removed from the equation by a city council so eager to please the lobbyists and activists who elected them that they have thrown common sense out the window.

Lastly, and most tragically, was the testimony at the council meeting by a psychologist who confidently asserted that if discrimination were just removed, the 44-percent suicide rate among transgender persons would surely decrease. (The rate for the U. S. as a whole is around 12 percent). I have to wonder, is it possible that these individuals are engaged in a larger mental struggle relating to identity and rejection of self? Will the next step of “help” the law provides include strict regulation on types of counseling and therapy for persons struggling with questions of sexual and gender identity? Or farther down the road, when will it become illegal for me to read from Romans 1 in my pulpit?

I, for one, am thankful that we the people have our North Carolina legislature as a final line of defense against the overreach of the city of Charlotte and activist judges.

Providence Day boys charge to state title

Brian Field’s voice broke as he fought back tears of joy in the hallway outside of his team’s locker room. Field, a graduate of Providence Day and native Charlottean, had just coached the Chargers to their first state title since 1999, as they defeated High Point Christian Academy, 67-53, in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state championship at Ravenscroft Feb. 20. “If you’re invested in what you do your season is going to end in tears,� Field said. “That’s the reality of being a coach. You hope they’re tears of joy and happiness. That was a lot of fun.

I’m very proud of them right now, and that moment we got to share was well-deserved by those guys. “It’s been my dream. I told our coaching staff when we were watching film together this was one of the few life goals that I have left. I wanted to win this since I was a middle schooler at Providence Day. It’s a pretty special feeling personally for me.�

Field said it’s not about him, but his players, who made history by winning the program’s sixth state championship. It was a game few gave them a chance to win. In fact, several conversations could be heard around the gym that the championship was the semifinal game between High Point Christian and Greensboro Day, even though the Chargers defeated both teams during the regular season.

Providence Day (30-3, 10-0 CISAA) jumped on the Cougars from the opening tip, leading by as many as 20 points.

HPCA’s senior forward, Edrice “Bam� Adebayo, a Kentucky signee, who had 23 points and 15 rebounds in the first meeting of the season, appeared to be a tall order once again.

But the Chargers, as Field called them, were the “team of destiny.� Adebayo, who finished with 11 points and nine re-

bounds, was scoreless in the first half, while he struggled with foul trouble, as Providence Day mounted a 31-22 halftime lead.

Charger sophomore point guard Devon Dotson, who scored seven points, also was limited due to foul trouble, sitting out portions of the first half and most of the second half before he fouled out in the fourth quarter, but Field’s team has been without its floor general before and overcame several obstacles to reach this game.

Enter sophomore guard Trey Wertz, who moved over from his shooting guard spot to run the point in Dotson’s stead. He lit the Cougars up with 22 points Thanksgiving weekend earlier this season and has been a steadying presence all year along with senior guard Scott Peterson, so he wasn’t scared.

In fact, the switch was seamless. It appeared natural for Wertz, who scored a game-high 25 points, pulled down six rebounds, and dished out six assists. “I missed my first two shots and then I got a layup and that’s kind of what got me going,� Wertz said. “My teammates just kept trusting me, telling me to keep shooting. As a shooter, you always have to forget about the last one.�

Senior forwards Grant Williams and Josh Howard also gave Providence Day a major lift, while Isaac Johnson provided the Chargers with much energy with his hustle on both ends of the court. Williams added 15 points and eight rebounds, while battling Adebayo. Howard chipped in 14 points. “We’re bulldogs, we fight, we never stop, we’re not going to let anything bother us, we’re going to focus on our goal, and no matter what happens we’re going to stay together and swarm as a pack and win everything we do,� Williams said.

Providence Day is under consideration for the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School Nationals in New York City March 31 to April 2.

Chargers girls win seventh straight states

Providence Day coach Josh Springer’s oldest son, who is 7 years old, has never seen the Chargers lose a state championship game, or seen them not reach it, which speaks to the undeniable dominance and stronghold the program has on North Carolina high school girls basketball.

The Chargers (27-2, 10-0 CISAA) won their seventh straight NCISAA 3A state championship when they beat Ravenscroft, 42-21, in the title game at Ravenscroft Feb. 20.

Springer said despite the historical success, every season is the beginning of a new journey with new players, so the Chargers had to work on a daily basis to reach this elite milestone.

Latin boys swimming take home fourth straight state title

Charlotte Latin boys’ swim team is the big fish in the pond that sits atop the food chain. The Hawks raced to their fourth consecutive NCISAA 3A state championship when it trounced runner-up, Asheville School, 366 to 278, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Feb. 22.

“It’s such a talented group of boys,” Latin coach Patty Waldron said.

“I felt all along we were the team to beat. I totally respect all the other schools, but I think this is really a unique group, and I really think their destiny was to win. I wasn’t really panicked about the outcome. I wanted to make sure the way we won it was right, and I believe the way we won it was right.”

The Hawks had something to prove after tying Cary Academy, 310310, in the state championship last season.

“At a team meeting I said, ‘Last year I watched every one of your faces at the end of the meet, and it was a weird look on your face,’” Waldron said.

“I remember coming over and talking to them, and I said, ‘You guys don’t know whether to be happy or sad, do you?’ They were like, ‘Not really,’ and I said, ‘The way I look at it is you’re the three-time defending state champions. That’s the way you need to look at it.’”

But at the team meeting before this season’s state championship meet Waldron challenged her swimmers. She told them that she wanted them to remember how they felt after tying Cary Academy, and that she wanted them to channel that feeling of disappointment into motivation to finish the job.

They answered the call to action, and rose to the occasion with a champion’s performance when it mattered most. The Hawks prepared like underdogs, but swam like champions.

Sophomore Tyler D’Allaird, sophomore Will Egan, senior James Hardy and junior Ikenna Eruchalu set the tone in the first event when they teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay, completing it in one minute and 37.53 seconds.

D’Allaird followed that with claiming first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.68. Hardy placed second in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing it in 1:57.12.

Eruchalu cruised to victory in the 100-yard butterfly, breaking a 20year state record (49.64 seconds) with a time of 49.58 seconds. Hardy was runner-up, finishing it in 51.95 seconds.

Eruchalu also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.61 seconds. D’Allaird was runner-up, completing it in 52.77 seconds.

Sophomore Sam Mahoney placed second in the 500-yard freestyle, completing it in 4:58.19.

Mahoney, freshman Connor Neely, Egan and senior Jackson Dickey joined forces to finish third in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:32.63.

Egan also placed third in the 100-yard breastroke, finishing it in 1:01.29.

Latin made its crescendo in the meet’s final event when D’Allaird, Mahoney, Eruchalu and Hardy merged to a victorious ending in the 400yard freestyle relay, claiming first place in 3:14.07.

The Hawks will be back next year with a talented group of swimmers to defend their crown, and will try to make it five in a row.

Their commitment is certainly unquestionable, because their success has been sustained for such a long period of time.

It was shown by their balanced attack on offense. Junior forward/center Janelle Bailey led Providence Day with a double-double performance of 15 points and 10 rebounds, while senior forward Erin Whalen added 11 points.

Whalen, who also made four steals, and senior forward Celine Ives sparked the Chargers with their suffocating defense, as they denied the Ravens shot opportunities and cut off passing lanes.

Ives said in the locker room before the game, she and her teammates told one another they were not about to be the team that lost, the team that surrendered the streak of state championships.

“One of the teams that lost to another team they were fist-bumping and high-fiving at the end of the game and instead of saying, ‘good game,’ they said, ‘Beat PD, beat PD,’ so hearing that, ‘Wow, we cannot lose,’” Ives said.

Providence Day is that obstacle the rest of the state is trying to tear down, but it appears it’s here to stay.

The Chargers are certainly enjoying the celebration, but will soon get back to the grind as they set out to win another championship and defend their crown next season.

Providence Day is under consideration for the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School Nationals in New York City April 1 and 2.
