Soccer academy breaks in $11M complex by Justin Vick news@pinevillepilot.com
The Charlotte Soccer Academy has breathed new life into an old dump site on Dorman Road by opening an $11-million complex on July 26. “It’s been a breath of fresh air for the club, from having not only the additional fields to spread out our training and practice, but also the quality of the fields,” Executive Director Brad Wylde said. The OrthoCarolina Sportsplex includes six fields, including five with artificial turf. An adjacent building will house a club store, administrative offices and physical therapy space. Mayor Jack Edwards is excited someone came into town and converted the 70-acre dump site into a first-class operation that will attract visitors. While in town for tournaments, visitors to Pineville will likely spend money at local shops and restaurants.
Details emerge about I-485, U.S. 74 express lanes by Justin Vick news@pinevillepilot.com
Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter was visibly frustrated July 27 when representatives from the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) could not give Charlotte City Council an estimate of how much commuters could be paying to use express lanes along Interstate 485 and U.S. 74. Clodfelter asked NCDOT about pricing a couple of times before the start of the city council meeting, noting that express lanes projects will be up for a formal vote next month and start construction next year. “It seems to me, we’re pretty far down the road,” said District 7 Councilmember Ed Driggs of the projects winding through south Charlotte. “We ought to have some concept of what those numbers are.” Photo courtesy of Logan Stewart/OrthoCarolina

Eight vying for town council seats by Courtney Schultz news@pinevillepilot.com
As filing closed last month at the county’s board of elections office, eight candidates stepped up to try to fill one of council’s four seats. This election will begin a transition for the town, as Pineville’s current council approved an amendment to the town charter in February to change the term length of councilmembers from two-year to four-year terms on a staggered schedule. The current councilmembers and mayor will be up for reelection during
the 2015 municipal election. The two councilmembers with the highest votes in the Nov. 3 election will serve the first four-year terms and the other two will serve two-year terms. Then, the four-year terms for the remaining seats will begin after the 2017 municipal elections. Town staff felt the modification would bring continuity and give councilmembers a greater chance to enact change. The town’s mayoral terms will remain at two years. Mayor Jack Edwards is running unopposed in November’s election. Incumbents David Phillips, Les Gladden and Debbie Fowler plan to return to
their seats, but five newcomers hope to make a change on council. Juliet Van Dyke, Judianna Tinklenberg, Adam Perkins, Chris McDonough and John Harless all hope to bring a new face to council. Jonathan James Rutkowski is named on the county’s ballot, but told The Pineville Pilot on Aug. 11 he will not run. Residents also might miss another familiar face, as Mayor Pro Tem Melissa Rogers Davis will not return to council. “Concerning my decision not running for council was a hard one. I pondered over it for months. I initially sought office
because I wanted to make a difference in Pineville and I feel like I have succeeded in making a difference,” Davis wrote in an email. “During my service, the town has undergone significant changes to better the residents' lives. Unfortunately, you never have enough time to see all of your goals come to fruition and there are still a few that I hope this next group of councilmembers can achieve…” She also stated she plans to still be involved in the town and encourages constituents to “vote for someone that is involved and truly cares about you and the future of the town.” (see Election on page 4)
