Pineville Parks & Rec gearing up for 2016 Town to add programs, bring back favorite events

It’s a new year, and Pineville residents have plenty to look forward to in 2016, courtesy of Pineville Parks & Recreation.

The town’s ever-active department aims to bring a variety of entertainment and enrichment to residents of all ages through sponsoring and hosting various classes and special events throughout the year.

The Pineville Pilot reached out to Pineville Parks & Recreation Director Kristy Detwiler to let our readers know about new programs arriving this year and longtime favorites that are returning.

Detwiler said the newest addition to Pineville Parks & Rec programs is “Kickin’ It in Pineville,” a co-ed youth soccer league for kids 3 to 7 years old.

“That program will last about eight weeks.

(The kids) will practice one night a week and have games on Saturday,” Detwiler said.

Registration is currently open and runs through Feb. 26. Cost is $50 for Pineville residents and $75 for nonresidents, and registration is available online at www.pinevil lenc.gov and at the Belle Johnston Community Center.

Detwiler said the town is looking forward to Kickin’ It in Pineville and other athletic

programs the town’s new athletic coordinator, Erin Hamilton, might add later in the year. “(She’s) bringing a lot of energy toward starting some new athletic programs for the youth, so I’m hoping, with the newer neighborhoods that have been developed recently, that we can get some of our youth athletic programming to expand.”

Detwiler also is looking forward to bringing the Kenya Safari Acrobats back to Pineville’s annual Fall Fest, scheduled for Oct. 14 and 15.

“We haven’t had them for four years,” she said. “They used to be a big hit. They had some trouble getting Visas (recently), but we have a contract for them to come back this year.”

Pineville Parks & Rec also has launched Preschool Open Gym for kids 5 years old and younger. The program is free and takes place every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Belle Johnston Community Center gym.

Parents must remain with their children during the event.

Other classes the town hosts periodically include: self-defense/karate; cheerleading, clay creations; pre-school glaze; pottery and glaze; and various camps. Find a full schedule of classes and programs at www.pinevillenc. gov on the “Parks & Recreation” page.

Being new to the town of Pineville, I did my online search and drove through the main streets to see what I could learn. While I couldn’t find much online about what’s happening, I was able to feel the unique small-town charm and love Monica Stephenson woven throughout my drive from the time I took exit 65B off Interstate 485.

On one of my many adventures to the post office, it was raining and someone offered to give me a ride, since I was carrying so much mail. Now that’s small-town charm. I knew I was in the right place.

I had the opportunity to meet with Mayor Jack Edwards and Town Manager Haynes Brigman to understand the direction of the growth desired for the town, and to learn about some of the plans that are unfolding.

Discovering the massive old Cone Mill site, I imagined all the hustle and bustle inside of Dover Mills (to be later called Cone Mills) back in the day. Repurposing that land will give more life to downtown, as I would imag-

ine it was back when the mill was open. What a great opportunity for Pineville.

Even though I have been in Pineville for only three months, I have met many people to learn about the town, and what’s best for it. My journey has taken me all over Pineville. I received a warm welcome at the police and fire departments upon arriving. Then, I got to know Bobbi Whitehead of Grace Life Academy, who told me they sponsor a parent’s night out to give parents an opportunity to get out without having to worry about their children. I enjoyed a fabulous chai latte at Mama’s Coffeehouse and had a delicious Apple Walnut Salad at Two on Earth. I quickly learned Town Clerk Barbara Monticello has all the answers I’ll need along the way, while Kristy Detwiler and her Parks and Recreation team know the ins and outs of town events. And I can’t forget the hamburger soup at Dive-N. Needless to say, getting to know this charming small town has been a wild ride.

As I settled into my role at Pineville Communication Systems, I also had the opportunity to meet Pineville Elementary School Assistant Principal Kathryn Trotter. We are partnering with them to provide 10 reading mentors to buddy with students.

Perhaps the most exciting thing is there are so many more businesses and business owners to meet. I’m excited for all that’s in Pineville’s future. Thank you, Pineville, for welcoming me with open arms. This is a great place to live and work.

Carolina Flipz offers gymnastics for children with special needs PINEVILLE – Pineville’s Carolina Flipz is now offering customized classes for students with special needs.

“We’ve been doing this since June, but based on current demand, we have enough interest to offer tailor-made classes to those with special needs, who up until now have been in trial classes,” Owner Angela Davis said. “All special needs students will be given a free, introductory class so they can see if it’s a good fit.”

The owner and coach was inspired to start the classes by her mother, a special education teacher.

“It is especially important to me to have our team kids assist and interact with the special needs students,” Davis said in the release. “Research has proven that children who are exposed to people with disabilities — either directly or indirectly — have more positive attitudes about those with special needs.”

South Charlotte Macaroni Kid voted Carolina Flipz “Best Girls Gymnastics Facility” in the Charlotte area in 2015, according to the release.

Car wash coming to Park Road at former Baby Grocery Store site PINEVILLE – Construction is underway for the new Sam’s Xpress Car Wash going in between the CVS and Tin-Tin Buffet on Park Road in Pineville.

The building that used to be The Baby Grocery Store has been torn down to make room for the car wash.

Matthews-based Sam’s Xpress Car Wash has grown to 12 locations since opening in 2012. The firm broke ground on its Gastonia and Pineville locations in November.

Local developer seeks public input on mixed-use community PINEVILLE – New Forum Inc. is seeking public feedback on enhancements to Parkway Crossing, a mixed-used planned community in Pineville. The community will include modern residences above retail options and office space.

“Parkway Crossing will serve as a community and employment hub on the Dorman Road corridor, connecting fast-growing Lancaster and York counties to Pineville,” said Charles Hodges, president and CEO of New Forum Inc. in a release. “A full service restaurant, market/deli, local retail, fitness center, salons and bakery, along with Class A office space to create 500 new jobs (will be included).”

The company will hold a forum on Jan. 27 and 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., to showcase elements of the proposed community.

Pineville Police Department seeks to purge ‘property room’ PINEVILLE – The Pineville Police Department (PPD) has acquired, through its regular course of business, property unrelated to any criminal matter. The legal owner or owners of the property are unknown to PPD, or have not responded to any attempt to contact them.

It is the intention of the PPD to seek court authorization for destruction of the property.

For 18 years, my mother has lived with me. Just over three years ago, she slipped getting out of bed.

We took her to the hospital. Fortunately, she didn’t break anything.

My mother has dementia. When she came home from the hospital, we set up her living quarters with a hospital bed to assist with her home recovery. It is up against the wall on one side and bed rails on the other. When she tried to slip out the bottom of the bed, we put up a big board to prevent that. She wasn’t going anywhere.

In addition, we use a seat alarm for the times during the day when she sits in her chair. We have baby monitors in the house so we could hear her wherever we are. One is located downstairs and one upstairs in my bedroom. There is always someone home with her 24 hours a day.

This worked well for the first two years.

As my mother’s dementia worsened, she started calling for her mother. She told us her mother needed her home. We’ve assured her all is well; however, she still calls out for her in the middle of the night.

Since the baby monitor was in my bedroom, I would sit up straight in bed. Getting back to sleep took some time.

I found myself exhausted – bone tired exhausted. Even though I faithfully used my C-Pap machine, I was exhausted during the day. I was like a rechargeable bat-

tery that had limited shelf life and didn’t hold a charge for long.

I didn’t realize how exhausted I was until a day I was attending Rotary. The speaker began his presentation and I fell asleep. I fell sound asleep five times. I was dreaming. I woke up and looked around.

No one was staring at me. Good. I tried to stay awake but found myself sleeping and dreaming the second time. I woke up.

I dodged that bullet. No one saw me. I smiled at the speaker, looked at the PowerPoint – again, I was sleeping and dreaming a third time. I looked at the Rotarian next to me. She hadn’t elbowed me yet so she had no idea I was sleeping. I stay awake for a little while, but again, I was sleeping and dreaming a fourth time. I had 10 minutes left. I thought I could make it, but once again, I was sleeping and dreaming for the fifth time.

It wasn’t the speaker’s fault.

Later that day, my wife commented that when my mother called out in the middle of the night, I sat straight up. I don’t remember doing that. I realized at that moment I was like a couple with a newborn baby; I wasn’t getting any sleep. I was exhausted.

Knowing my mother was safe on all four sides in the hospital bed, I moved the baby monitor out of my bedroom to the bonus room where my wife and daughter spend most of their time. I got a full night’s sleep. The same happened the next night and the next.

Jesus reminds us to love our neighbor as ourself. If I don’t take care of myself, I can’t take care of my neighbor (or my mother). When I’m tired, I’m short with the people I love. I’m not myself.

There were two gifts given in early December. I am getting a full night’s sleep and my mother got a well-rested son who is better prepared to take care of her.

Stir in yeast mixture and egg. Gradually add remaining flour to form a stiff dough. Turn onto lightly floured surface and let rest 10 minutes before kneading until smooth. Redeveloping the Cone Mill could transform Pineville community, just as the town council envisioned it being when they made the decision to acquire it.

The recent focus of the town has been acquiring the property, and now that we have secured the site, staff and council look forward to marketing the property for the right type of development to take place.

Unsatisfied with the progress of fixing up the old Cone Mill, Pineville offered to acquire the 28 acres from its owner, clean up the site and put the property back on the market.

Pineville Town Manager Haynes Brigman said the strategy allows the town to have input in how the land is redeveloped, which could increase property values and potentially transform downtown.

Brigman sat down with the Pineville Pilot to answer questions about the project.

Has the town acquired the land?

The town has acquired the Cone Mill property, effective Dec. 23, 2015.

Has a timeline been set to clean it up?

Cleanup of the property is two-fold. There is the cleanup of the hazardous materials onsite, and then the cleanup of the debris piles and crumbling buildings throughout the property.

The town's first priority is to clean up the hazardous materials on the property. The previous property owner had an open case with the EPA requiring cleanup and removal of these hazardous materials, and the town will assume those

cleanup responsibilities. This will include the removal of chemical materials, as well as asbestoscontaining materials throughout the site.

We are currently collecting bids for this cleanup and will proceed with the hazardous material cleanup once quotes have been received.

The cleanup of the debris piles, or extensive cleanup of the entire property, will likely come later, as a more detailed plan on the redevelopment/sale of the property is determined.

The town also plans to immediately address

small efforts to improve the looks and security of the property, including removal of scattered trash, repairing and securing the fencing, posting the property and general landscape improvements.

How much interest have you received from developers?

We have received a lot of interest from developers since it was announced the town intended to acquire the property. The amount of interest shows that the site can be a valuable asset to the

The Cone Mill represents a core piece of history for our community, but also one that has seen decades of deterioration and vacancy.

We believe the redevelopment and revitalization of the property will be a benefit to every Pineville resident and business owner, and will certainly be impactful to the residents immediately surrounding the property.

While a timeframe is unknown at this point, the cleanup and revitalization of the Cone Mill property will be the number one priority for the town in 2016.

CMS population needs community to ‘buy-in’ Experts say the community needs to volunteer, support low-performing schools

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student reassignment discussions have ignited a laundry list of questions about the social issues in Mecklenburg County.

Mecklenburg County has polarized wealth between the high-poverty and low-poverty areas, many of which reside next door to each other.

But who makes up Mecklenburg County?

Who are the children attending CharlotteMecklenburg’s public schools?

CMS reported they enrolled 146,140 students this year. That population broke down into 40 percent black students, 29 percent white students, 22 percent Hispanic students, 6 percent Asian students and 3 percent American Indian or multiracial.

Approximately 187 countries are represented in CMS, with 175 languages spoken by students.

A recent CMS report stated 37,170 students speak another language when they go home and CMS has approximately 17,000 limited English proficiency students.

CMS is a relatively diverse district, but U.S. Census data appears to present a different ethnic picture of the entire county.

White populations (49.3 percent) make up the largest ethnic group with black (32.1 percent) and Hispanic (12.6 percent) populations following behind.

About 15 percent of people living in the

county are foreign-born, which 18.8 percent of residents speaking another language at home with 52 percent of residents stating they don’t speak English “very well.” Forty-eight percent of those who speak another language at home speak Spanish.

The Census Bureau estimated approximately 147,896, or about 15 percent, Mecklenburg County residents lived below the poverty threshold in 2013. Approximately 2,014 were considered homeless on Jan. 29, 2015, and 81 percent of them were black.

Mecklenburg County’s highest poverty areas include zip codes 28208 near the airport; 28205 – Plaza Midwood and part of NoDa; 28212 and 28215.

The high-poverty zip codes include some of CMS’s 76 Title I schools, including McClintock Middle School, Greenway Park Elementary School, Oakhurst STEAM Academy, Eastway Middle School and Harding High School.

However, some of those zip codes, such as 28205 and 28212 are directly adjacent to two zip codes (28204 and 28207) with the lowest poverty in the county. Poverty resides a street or two away from the Cherry and Elizabeth neighborhoods and SouthPark areas where the least number of people of poverty live.

However, a recent report from Paul Jargowsky at The Century Foundation states high-poverty neighborhoods have seen a greater increase in population than low-poverty areas.

Many families earn less than the living wage in

Mecklenburg County, a common issue throughout the nation and children have found trouble leaving poverty.

Two Harvard University economic professors deemed Charlotte the second toughest place behind Baltimore, Maryland for kids to escape poverty. This means Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s children of poverty most likely will become adults of poverty.

What do the numbers mean?

Experts say if the community doesn’t get involved now, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area will continue to experience polarized wealth, but money isn’t the solution.

Business leaders put money into the lowperforming schools through programs, such as Project L.I.F.T., but the problems are completely solved in the west Charlotte corridor, according to Roslyn Mickelson, a sociology professor at UNC Charlotte, who has researched school desegregation and resegregation in Charlotte. She believes the voting population has switched, as more Latino, Asian and black families migrate into the area. More white voters “don’t have a sense of what the community went through,” while the ethnic voters are weary of “black” issues, Mickelson added.

Black neighborhoods create black schools because student assignment is mostly based on geography. A study earlier this year from Stanford found middle-class black families will reside in neighborhoods with lower incomes than the

typical low-income white family. A study from two Harvard economists tracked children and where they grew up influenced their lives. The study found children who grow up in neighborhoods with less poverty and crime and schools with higher test scores progressed better as adults than their “worse” neighborhood counterparts.

Some experts are concerned if the community doesn’t step in, children of poverty will not be prepared adults – the next generation of voters, leaders and decision makers.

They encourage the community to introduce alternate career paths to children of poverty and investment time through volunteering.

School officials call for more participation of the community in schools through volunteering – particularly parents and other adult role models in a child’s life.

Mickelson encourages community “buy-in” of helping reach children of poverty, which she said can include adjusting attendance boundaries, increasing magnet programs and coordinating school and housing policies.

Some community members hope CMS will gain more corporate partners to help increase community buy-in, which may help level the playing field for high versus low poverty schools.

“We can get this right. We are strong and we can be stronger,” said Mary Nell McPherson, executive director of Freedom School Partners.

“We can choose the kind of community where all children grow into who they were created to be.”

Charlotte Catholic pursues 15th state title in the pool

There’s something in the water at Charlotte Catholic. It might not be holy water, but when the Cougars dive into the pool there’s usually something sacred at stake. The ripple effects from the success of the program have been felt at the state level for more than a decade, as Charlotte Catholic’s girls’ swimming team has won 14 consecutive state championships.

Catholic has a young group of swimmers compared to last year’s team, but the pressure to maintain the championship standard is something that’s felt across the board with a 15th straight state title in sight.

“We have pretty much one senior leader and the rest of them are juniors, sophomores and freshmen,” Charlotte Catholic coach Tim Berens said. “The next year is going to be exciting, but this one will be a tough one for us to get No. 15.”

But the Cougars still have much to swim for before they can sit back and celebrate.

The fun is about to begin for the Cougars with the conference championship meet (Jan. 22), regional meet (Feb. 6) and the state championship meet (Feb. 10 and 11) right around the corner.

It’s been a year of transition for the Catholic program as Berens replaced Brian Gross as head coach, but the Cougars (8-1) haven’t skipped a beat.

The only hiccup came in a loss to Providence, which might have been a blessing in disguise.

“That Providence meet we lost was a huge wakeup call,” Berens said. “It really got them motivated and upset them they lost that meet. We have the talent to win that. It was a huge wakeup call and a huge disappointment. It was nice to see they were fired up about it. They’re getting fired up for conference.

“That was the turning point of the season and they realize they need to kick it in gear. They know what they’re capable of. When it comes to conference, regionals and states it’s amazing to see how much faster they go and what they do.

The Cougars only have to harken back to their 9-16 season two years ago to remember they must be at their best every night to keep from getting knocked off.

“While they’ve had some success the past year-and-ahalf they also experienced a down time where they were still working and still getting better,” Charlotte Catholic coach Mike King said. “They’ve seen both sides of it and that experience definitely helps.”

Catholic flipped the trajectory of the program during the second half of that losing season when it won five of its last six games to reach nine victories. That record is nothing to write home about, but the turnaround and strong finish gave the Cougars something to hang their hats on and has propelled them to success moving forward. It set them up for where they’re at now.

The Cougars are done with exams and are healthy, including freshman big man, B.J. Mack, who is back from a sprained ankle. Mack (11.3 ppg and 5.8 rpg) gives Catholic a talented inside presence.

Berens is quick to say Gross knew what he was doing, as he built this Cougar dynasty. However, the 23 year old, who is in his second year with the program, has much to offer in helping Catholic continue its stream of success.

Berens, a financial analyst by day, is the son of South Meck swimming coach Leslie Berens and the younger brother of Olympic gold medalist Ricky Berens. Swimming is in his DNA. He swam for the South Carolina Gamecocks, and he knows what it takes to be successful and how to build a team.

Senior point guard Josh Brodowicz continues to be the leader and catalyst on the team. He provides the Cougars with another scorer and suffocating on-the-ball defense (11 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.1 apg and 3.3 spg). Senior guards Jack Larkin and Sam Smith and junior forward Jimmy Abate have provided key support with their play, giving Catholic other capable scorers.

This is a balanced lineup that keeps opponents from keying on one guy, because the Cougars have multiple options on offense.

“The guy that makes us go is Josh,” King said. “Josh has played great the last few games. Over the last few games they [Brodowicz and Larkin] have been the most spectacular. Everybody shows up every game, and that’s fun as a coach.”

King added being undefeated comes up, but said he and his team are taking it one game at a time.

“We’re just trying to be better each day in practice,” King said. “We’re not focused on the opponent as much. We’re focused on us and whether or not we got better that particular day.”

South Meck boys’ basketball staying competitive in So. Meck 8 conference South Meck is finally in the meat of conference play, and the Sabres (8-6) remain competitive in the So. Meck 8 with a 4-2 record in league play.

The Sabres claim the head-to-head tie breaker with Berry (12-4, 4-2 So. Meck 8) for second place in the conference, but remain two games behind the top team, Charlotte Catholic.

The transition hasn't just been with coaching, though.

Catholic lost some key stalwarts from last season’s state championship team when Nora McCullagh, Sara Stranick and Becca Postoll graduated.

It was a similar situation for last year’s team, which had to replace six of its top swimmers, who went to Division I programs. The Cougars just reload on elite talent every year.

This team is headlined by sophomore Julia Menkhaus and juniors Erin McCullagh, Lindsey Mahn and Katy Miller, and senior, Mariel Green. Green is the leader on the team.

At last season’s state championship meet Menkhaus finished in the top four in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100yard butterfly and was part of one of the state title relays, while Erin McCullagh placed in the top six in the 500 and the top eight in the 100-yard backstroke. Catholic needs everyone on the team to step, but Menkhaus and McCullagh have higher expectations surrounding them.

“Julia Menkhaus, she’s our stud,” Berens said. “She’s our 100 flyer, 100 backstroker, 200 freer. She can do anything.

She’ll be up there at states. Hoping she’ll win. We’ll see what happens. You never know what’s going to happen. She just got her Olympic trial cut this past summer, so she’s doing well. It’ll be a good year for her.

“Erin McCullagh, she’s another great young swimmer.

Hopefully [she’ll] improve from last year.”

The 100-yard backstroke is Catholic’s strongest event, while the 500-yard freestyle is another solid event for the Cougars.

Mahn said the margins of winning can be so close, and no one wants to let the team down. She and her teammates definitely feel pressure to win, but said her goal is to make it as fun as possible for everyone.

“It’s exciting to see what all the new people can do and see how they can swim,” Miller said.

Green added they must come up with a different gameplan for the state championship meet and get closer as a team. She said Catholic has more competitors, which has created a sense of urgency within the team over the years.

That should continue to be the case for the Cougars, as they seek to swim their way to another successful finish. pass the Cougars.

“Our big focus from last year to this year is we’ve really tried to emphasize our defense,” South Meck coach John Fitch said.

“Last year we led the conference in scoring, but were dead last in defense, which is not a good combination. This year we’re doing much better on our defense. I think that’s been a big key. Guys have another year under their belt together.”

Fitch added South Meck’s defense has triggered its offense this season, which has been integral to the Sabres improvement.

Senior guards Jalen Blakeney (15.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, four apg and 2.6 spg) and Khayleb Connelly (14.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 3.2 apg and 2.9 spg) are carrying the bulk of the scoring load for South Meck. Senior combo forward Bo Blight and senior guard Josh Igwe also are playing well.

Fitch wants to see his team get more disciplined and do a better job of playing together and trusting each other, especially at critical junctures in games.

“Last year we lost so many close games for not making the right decision or knowing what you’re supposed to do in that particular situation, so we stress that if they continue to trust each other late down the stretch, play together, I think we’ll have a chance to be competitive,” Fitch said.
