Parade, concert and more in downtown Matthews MATTHEWS – Area residents are invited to downtown Matthews for a

variety of activities on Saturday, July 4, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The afternoon will kick off with a �People’s Parade,� commencing at town hall.

People are invited to visit the town green, next to town hall, at 5 p.m. to decorate bicycles, wagons and more for the parade, which will start at 5:30 p.m. “This is the time to get creative with garland, streamers, flags, balloons and other items that will be provided to make your mode of transportation stand out,� the town said in a news release.

The parade route will begin on Matthews Station Street, turn left on Trade Street and end at Stumptown Park, where other activities will be held. Activities in the park start at 5 p.m. and will include face painting, carnival games, a bounce house, “kid-friendly� activities and balloon

gifts from Curley the Clown. Food and dessert trucks also will be on site throughout the evening.

Queen City Brass Band’s annual patriotic concert MINT HILL – The Queen City Brass `Band will take the stage in downtown Mint Hill for the town’s annual patriotic concert on Friday, July 3, at 7 p.m.

The concert will conclude the town’s annual June Tunes concert series, and will feature various patriotic favorites and more.

MATTHEWS – Nineteenth-century physician Dr. Henry V. Massey is one of the most prominent historical figures in Matthews, but until recently, the town didn’t even have a photograph of him.

Local historians now have seen two images of the man known to many as simply “Dr. Massey.� But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Kevin Furniss and Jennifer Nemes, two Florida residents and the great-great-grandchildren of Dr. Massey, recently donated hundreds of memorabilia items to the Matthews Heritage Museum. Items include multiple letters and receipts, with the earliest document dating back to 1863, as well as Dr. Massey’s spectacle rims, his wife’s small braided locket necklace, late 19th- and early 20th-century photographs, antique medical bottles and more.

Matthews-based Threshold finds new home in Union County

MATTHEWS – Serving others has always been Threshold Church’s mission, which Lead Pastor Dr. Jeff Gardner said never required a church building.

Since the church’s inception in 2002, the congregation has met in the Siskey Family YMCA’s gymnasium in Matthews. However, to meet the growing needs of the church, Threshold, a church plant of Forest Hill Church, found a home in a standalone, unconventional building in Weddington.

“We’re a church like every other church, where our mission is pretty much the same – every church’s mission ought to be the same – but we like to think in a little different way.

We’re very authentic and transparent with people. We’re a church that loves to serve – it’s not about us, which is

why the (YMCA) has worked for so long,” Gardner said. “It just keeps our focus on other people and not just ourselves.”

The Siskey YMCA allowed the church to build storage sheds to hold services, and the church attracted multiple members from the Siskey community.

Threshold and the Siskey YMCA built a strong partnership over the years, which encouraged the church to continue staying in the rented space.

The congregation, which has about 140 families, hadn’t discussed moving to an independent space for 11 years, Gardner added.

“We were thinking money that would go into a building would better served in serving the community,” Gardner said. “We began to realize that it’s a really great church, but in our culture, people want a building.”

Over the years, Gardner watched hundreds of people come and go in the church because they had trouble worshipping in a gym.

“In our culture, people just like nice things. Not that the YMCA isn’t a nice place, but it’s a gym, a workout facility,” he said.

The church also decided on a new location to increase its visibility in the

community, as well as create a “sense of permanency.”

“It tells the community, ‘We’re not going anywhere,’” the lead pastor said.

The church elders and staff began discussing a permanent structure in 2011 and started a fundraising campaign in 2012. They began looking for a rental space close to the YMCA, but couldn’t find a place that met their budget and needs. Gardner also wanted to rent a location that was “in the public square.”

But, he didn’t want to build a new structure because of increased cost and because “church buildings tend to sit empty all week.”

“I (also) served at a couple of really old churches, and the building became more important than the Lord,” Gardner added.

The church looked into the Siskey YMCA’s Hemby Activity Center, but the YMCA’s board did not approve the move. After an inability to find a rental space, the church elders and staff decided to construct a building to meet the church’s needs.

About nine months ago, the church closed on a 10-acre parcel off Antioch Church Road in Weddington, two-and-

a-half miles from where the church began. The congregation raised funds to purchase the property last summer, and the Weddington Town Council approved the rezoning petition in September 2014. Threshold closed on the property on its 12th birthday, Gardner said.

Although the location isn’t in a town center, church leadership decided it reflected the congregation’s identity.

“It came down to a change understanding of who we wanted to be as a church. Maybe being out on a busy street corner isn’t all that important,” Gardner said.

Gardner said the property has a “retreat feel,” with winding curves that help generate calmness.

He said the church plans to only develop on the front half of the property and leave the back half “natural.”

The property also contains a house the church currently uses for Bible studies and other purposes.

The congregation hopes the permanent structure will serve multiple community purposes, including Antioch Elementary School functions, weddings, retreats and group meetings.

like a barn, Gardner said.

The church will be built around a 4,000-square-foot Minnesotan barn from the 1880s. The barn sat on property where pilots were trained to fly gliders, which were used during the Normandy attack of World War II. A glider rudder remained in the barn, which will be displayed in the new church.

Threshold plans to make modern structural changes to the barn, but the interior timbers will remain.

“It’s just going to be a really neat facility,” Gardner said. “… we really just hope it’s going to be used in many different ways … Barns are really in right now, and that’s why I think it’s going to be a great wedding facility for us.”

More than 4,000 churches close their doors every year, according to the United States Census Bureau Records, and Gardner feels with a permanent structure, Threshold will not fall to that statistic.

“People might think, ‘After 13 years, you’re still (at the YMCA), you must not have a lot going on.’ If we don’t get the chance to say, ‘This was intentional,’ then (the public doesn’t) know that,” the lead pastor said. “That’s a big thing. We wanted people to know that

we’re a healthy church and we’re not going anywhere.”

Gardner commends “great leadership” in the church staff and elders, who make decisions for the church, as well as a “strong unwavering vision.”

The lead pastor wrote the church’s vision during its inception, and, although he said he loves change, the mission statement has remained and set the church’s direction.

“We just have great people who love to serve. I think servant-hearted people work harder and they are less concerned about their own needs,” Gardner said. “Typically, I think that’s when the church gets into trouble, when people get all ‘me-centered’ versus ‘others-centered.’”

The church has begun raising funds for construction and is working with the Weddington Town Council to establish plans for the structure. Gardner said they hope to begin construction in mid-2016. If they begin construction

by April 1, 2016, the church hopes to be complete by Christmas 2016.

“We’re finding a sense of home here.

It sounds funny because I’m always saying, ‘The church building isn’t the church, the people are the church,’ but it’s still a place to come home to,” he said. “It’s a place to gather with the (Threshold) community.”

Mint Hill cancels June 25 meeting, preps for holiday office closure

MINT HILL – The Mint Hill Board of Commissioners has cancelled its Thursday, June 25, meeting, which was scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. at town hall, due to “the fact there is no business to be conducted at this time,” according to a news release.

The board regularly holds meetings twice a month, on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, at 7 p.m. Find more information at www.minthill.com.

Mint Hill government offices, as well as town hall, will close on July 3, a Friday, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. Offices and town hall will resume normal business hours the following Monday, July 6.

Pit bull improving after June 10 discovery

The Matthews Police Department released this updated photo of Echo, a pit bull found earlier this month malnourished and with injuries consistent with long-term dogfighting.

earlier this month lying in the middle of the road on Lakeview Circle is improving, according to the Matthews Police Department.

The dog, now named Echo, was “very malnourished” and had “severe injuries” that appeared consistent with long-term dog fighting, when found on the Matthews street on the afternoon of June 10.

Police believe Echo was dropped in the area from a vehicle between 11:30 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. on June 10.

Matthews Police posted updates on the department’s Facebook page last week, stating Echo had improved significantly since Animal Control found him two weeks ago.

“He has gained almost nine pounds in the week since he was found. Thank you to all that have offered assistance for him,” the department said on its Facebook page.

Echo is being transferred to the Matthews-based S.A.F.E. Animal Haven during his recovery.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are learning so much more than we ever thought we could,â&#x20AC;? said Barbara Taylor, director of the Matthews Heritage Museum.

It all started back in 2002, when Elizabeth Furniss â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Kevinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother and Dr. Masseyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great-granddaughter â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sent 19 historical documents to Matthews, which were previously displayed at the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Seaboard train depot, currently headquarters to the Matthews Chamber of Commerce.

Years later, Taylor reached out to Elizabeth Furniss, only to learn from Kevin Furniss that she had died, and he and Nemes were trying to sell the estate. Taylor corresponded with Furniss and Nemes over the next year, as the siblings discovered the collection of historical memorabilia and eventually chose to donate the items to the museum.

One of the biggest discoveries came from a letter addressed to Dr. Massey from his son.

The letter, dated January 1879, states â&#x20AC;&#x153;the houseâ&#x20AC;? should be completed in the next two weeks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The houseâ&#x20AC;? the letter refers to is the Massey-Clark House, one of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest buildings, which is now home to the Matthews Heritage Museum.

Previously, historians believed the house was completed sometime in 1880, Taylor said, but they now know the house is more than one year older.

Another highlight discovery is a letter from Civil War soldier T.B. Stover addressed to his wife, Mary Van Landingham Stover,

and dated 1863. Shortly after, Mary became Stoverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s widow and eventually married Dr. Massey after his first wife died. The couple had two children together, in addition to 13 from their combined previous marriages.

Taylor said she and others have begun tracking Dr. Masseyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s movements through letters and receipts, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re discovering mysteries yet to be revealed, based on the locations where he was on certain dates â&#x20AC;&#x201C; such as Florida, South Carolina and a place formerly known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coburnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Store,â&#x20AC;? located in Union County just north of Monroe. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As much as weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re learning about him, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still a lot of mystery,â&#x20AC;? Taylor said.

Taylor and museum volunteers are working to transcribe the letters and input key information into a spreadsheet. The museum has two large boxes full of file folders containing the documents, and though sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been through nearly 100 documents, she estimates at least 200 more to be examined. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tedious â&#x20AC;Ś (because) weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re directly inputting (the transcripts) into the computer,â&#x20AC;?

Taylor said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of the letters have no punctuation, the spelling is not consistent. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to type the letters as they are, misspellings and all.â&#x20AC;?

Taylor said she hopes to put together a permanent display sometime this summer, featuring some of the items, photographs and documents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is something weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never had before,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Students to gather around the table all summer

Area students can ensure they’ll have breakfast and lunch each day this summer, thanks to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) summer program.

CMS’s Child Nutrition Services will offer its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) from June 16 to Aug. 7 at 52 CMS school sites. Some sites run Monday through Friday, while others run Monday through Thursday each week.

The program offers two free meals to Mecklenburg County children who are 1 to 18 years old. The meals meet nutrition standards based on federal guidelines.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides funding to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to administer the Summer Food Service Program. NCDPI recruits local governments, school food authorities and non-profit organizations to sponsor the programs in their communities. Those sponsors are reimbursed for the cost of the meals served.

More than 826,000 children in North Carolina were eligible to receive the meals in 2014, but only 17 out of every 100 of those children were served nutritious meals during the summer, according to NCDPI. For every 100 school lunch programs, there are only 87 breakfast sites and 36 summer food program sites in the country, the USDA reported.

Forensics summer camp for CMS students Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students in eighth through 12th grades will have the chance to harness their speech and debate skills this summer at the CMS Summer Camp for Forensic Excellence.

The camp is slated for Aug. 3 to 6, Monday to Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Myers Park High School.

The program will offer speech and debate events for novice through varsity, as well as a special program for new coaches and parent judges.

Registration fees are $65 per student for applications received by July 30 and $75 for applications paid for at the door.

Payments must be by cash or check made payable to “The Myers Park Speech and Debate Foundation.”

More than 1 in 5 children are at risk of hunger, and nearly 1 in 3 children among the African-Americans and Latino population is at risk of hunger, according to the USDA. In North Carolina, 17.3 percent of residents are at risk of hunger.

“Children who miss school breakfast and lunch are more likely to be sick, absent or tardy, disruptive in class and inattentive. They also score lower on achievement tests. Good nutrition is essential for learning in school,” read the USDA website. “(Summer feeding programs) provide an opportunity to continue a child's physical and social development while providing nutritious meals during long vacation periods from school. It helps children return to school ready to learn.”

Library helps students prep for kindergarten MATTHEWS – The Matthews Library will host two sessions this summer for rising kindergarteners to participate in stories and activities that build prereading skills and help prepare children for success in school.

“Get Set 4 Kindergarten,” part of Children’s Summer Reading 2015, is slated for June 27 and July 18, both Saturdays, at 11 a.m. both days. The sessions will take place in the community room.

“The goal of Summer Programs at Charlotte Latin is to promote a joy for learning as campers of all ages develop cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically through growth-promoting opportunities,” the website said. “Our co-educational day programs foster a passion for lifelong learning by enhancing a child’s understanding of his or her capabilities and sense of independence.”

Matthews student inducted into National Honor Society MATTHEWS – David Hogan, of Matthews, was recently inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, which

is limited to students who complete the first term of their first year in university with superior academic records, according to a news release.

Hogan is a member of the class of 2018 at Washington and Lee (W&L) University.

Students must be in the Top 20 percent of their class at the end of their first term to be eligible for induction.

“The academic accomplishments of the first year class, individually and collectively, are very impressive,” Jason Rodocker, associate dean of students and dean for first-year experience and adviser to the W&L chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, said in the release. “Many Phi Eta Sigma inductees will obtain further academic accolades including graduate fellowships.”

CMS Parks and Rec to discuss importance of conservation MATTHEWS – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation will conduct a presentation for students 12 to 18 years old, to explain the importance of conservation and exploring live animals.

The event is slated for July 14, a Tuesday, at 2 p.m. in the community room of the Matthews Library, located at 230 Matthews Station St. The program is part of Teen Summer Reading 2015.

Participants will talk about why conservation is important for both humans and animals. Live animals will be on hand to provide examples of North Carolina’s native wildlife.

Date set for annual community breakfast MeckEd, non-profit education advocacy group for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, has selected a date for its annual community breakfast.

The event brings the statewide community together to support public education, according to a news release. The breakfast is slated for Oct. 6, a Tuesday, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Westin Charlotte, located at 601 S. College St. This year’s keynote speaker will be Hill Harper, an actor, author and philanthropist. Harper starred on “CSI: NY” and “Covert Affairs,” wrote four New York Times bestsellers and is the founder of the Manifest Your Destiny Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering underserved youth.

MeckEd also will honor Tony Zeiss, president of Central Piedmont Community College, as its 2015 Education Champion of the Year.

Civil rights and musical nights Violinist reflects on history while preparing for annual Charlotte Symphony patriotic concert.

In her 28 years of playing with the Charlotte Symphony, violinist Susan Blumberg has been through a lot.

Before being offered the job, Blumberg endured the heartbreak of 14 unsuccessful auditions else- Susan Blumberg where and considered giving up. When she started with the Charlotte Symphony, the oldest musicians were the age she is now. She remembers the good and tough times.

“The Charlotte Symphony has been with me through many life stages,” said Blumberg, a Matthews resident. “My first Summer Pops was 1988, and I’ve played every one since.”

This year’s Summer Pops will culminate with “Hot Spanish Nights” on Sunday, June 28, and “Celebrate America!” on July 3, a Friday, in Symphony Park. Gates open at 5 p.m., followed by the prelude at 7 p.m. and the Charlotte Symphony’s performance at 8:15 p.m.

Blumberg’s journey with the violin was impacted by her father’s work as a civil rights advocate. A broadcast journalist from St. Louis, Missouri, Ralph Blumberg bought WBOX – a radio station in Bogalusa, Louisiana, north of New Orleans. In 1965, he organized a show with community leaders to discuss the Civil Rights Act. Ralph Blumberg canceled the show due to threats from the Ku Klux Klan, but still made an editorial stand in broadcasting his pro-civil rights stance.

When a moderate Klan leader warned Ralph Blumberg of a plot to kill his family, Blumberg sent his wife and two children – Susan and her brother – away to safety.

“He could have turned his head and life would have been much easier for us, but he did the right thing,” Blumberg said of her father.

Ralph Blumberg won the Paul White Award in 1965 for lifetime achievement in electronic journalism. Other winners include Edward R. Murrow, Tim Russert and John F. Kennedy.

Ralph Blumberg eventually lost the station and all he invested in it. When the family relocated to New York, they had no extra money for the music lessons Susan Blumberg begged her parents for.

children,” she said.

Her chance finally came in fourth grade.

The school desperately needed a violinist for their string program. When she realized the violin was included with the position, she volunteered and was a natural.

The Blumbergs eventually moved to Maryland so Ralph Blumberg could take a job in Washington, D.C. Susan Blumberg had not considered playing professionally, but her violin teacher encouraged her to prepare.

She received special permission to leave high school classes early so she could practice.

She attended the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and received a postgraduate Liberace Scholarship in 1981-82.

In 1983, she traveled to Mexico and landed a position with the Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM (OFUNAM), the oldest symphonic group in Mexico City. Though they played standard orchestral repertoire, Blumberg was immersed in a completely different culture, with rehearsals in Spanish and tours around Mexico.

“Music truly is a universal language,” said Blumberg, who remembers mariachi bands and dancing in the streets. “There is a warmth and depth to the people there, and it is reflected in their music.”

As part of Summer Pops, the Charlotte Symphony will take audience members on a similar musical adventure with its June 28 performance, “Hot Spanish Nights,” which features Spanish and Spanish-influenced music. “(It) will be so much fun,” Blumberg said.

“This music contains primal rhythms, which is why it’s appealing to so many.”

The July 3 Summer Pops concert will feature “Celebrate America!” – a patriotic concert. The music will include some unconventional picks, such as the “King of Pop Medley” – Victor A. Vanacore’s arrangement of Michael Jackson songs – in addition to “God Bless America,” “America the Beautiful” and “Liberty Bell” by John Philip Sousa. “‘Salute (to the Armed Forces)’ honors all of our service people in every branch of the military,” said Blumberg. “We have them stand when their theme is played.”

On July Fourth, when many Americans remember the moment the U.S. Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, Blumberg’s thoughts will inevitably turn to her father and what her family sacrificed so Americans could be free to pursue their dreams.

“I am really proud of them,” she said.

‘Saluting the Red, White, and Blue’ exhibit at Matthews Heritage Museum MATTHEWS – The Matthews Heritage Museum will celebrate July Fourth with a patriotic display, “Saluting the Red, White, and Blue.”

The small display features a variety of vintage patriotic memorabilia, including 100year-old postcards, an Uncle Sam figure, a cigar “flag,” antique paperweight and a Teddy Roosevelt plate, according to a news release.

The museum is partnering with Blue Star Museums – a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the U.S. Department of Defense and more than 2,000 museums across the U.S. – to offer free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day, Sept. 7.

Lock is key to Lions’ success Covenant Day’s Allan Lock is the 2015 Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly Boys’ Tennis Player of the Year

Covenant Day tennis star Allan Lock is a natural athlete, but his path to prowess in the sport is unique.

Lock, a rising senior, who just completed his first season of competing at the school level, formerly played only in individual tournaments, and previously ran track before a calf injury forced him to find a new sport. His mother, Stella Chong, urged him to try his hand at tennis.

It was a move that’s paying off in big ways for Lock.

He thrived in his first season with the Lions, finishing with an 11-4 record in singles matches and 7-6 record in doubles to earn all-conference and North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A all-state honors.

Now, Lock is the Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly Boys’ Tennis Player of the Year.

“He came to us with a reputation proceeding him, and certainly was an outstanding contribution to our team that had lost some seniors the year before,” Covenant Day coach George Wolbers said. “There were some spots to fill, and

he more than filled them.

“The CISAA is one of the top conferences, if not the top conference, in the state. He really battled everybody regardless of the score, so that they knew they were on the court with him.”

Lock said his positive mindset enabled him to be successful this season.

“Everybody on the team has great strokes,” Lock said. “Everybody can hit the ball, but keeping my mind in the positive mindset definitely pulled me through to win some difficult matches when the team needed me most.”

Lock’s speed on the court, and lefthanded advantage, gave him an edge but his powerful forehand is a weapon that sent him over the top.

Lock’s transition from competing in individual tournaments to the high school level as the No. 1 spot holder on Covenant Day’s team wasn't always smooth – he sustained early season losses to Marvin Ridge’s George Lovitt and Christ Episcopal School’s Wesley Quattlebaum, which proved to be good learning experiences for Lock.

A critical moment for Lock and the

Lions came when they were forced to play two dual matches in one day against Christ School and Asheville School in 34-degree weather with 12to 15-mile-per-hour winds due to a scheduling conflict.

He trailed Christ School’s Alex Dunn, an all-state honoree, 3-0, in their first match, but stormed back to win, 6-3, and won the second match, 6-0.

He defeated Asheville School’s No. 1 later that day.

That kind of dedication, determination and relentless will to win put Lock in a position to thrive. But Wolbers said it’s his work ethic that truly set him apart as one of the game’s elite.

“It was outstanding, and his passion for the game is equally impressive,” Wolbers said. “His passion for the team organization, I found, is tremendously rewarding how he felt everything he did in practice and in a match was dedicated to group.”

His work ethic, passion and prowess were key in Covenant Day’s first-round bye and run to the third round of the NCISAA 3A state playoffs, and will likely again be in the mix of the cream that rises to the top next season.

Q&A with Marvin Ridge football coach Aubrey Carter

First-year Marvin Ridge coach Aubrey Carter has been at the post of his new job as leader of Maverick football for nearly a month.

Carter, who took the helm at Marvin Ridge after spending the previous 12 years as an assistant coach at Lake Norman, was the Wildcats offensive coordinator.

Lake Norman’s offense averaged 42 points per game under Carter’s guidance, as the Wildcats (13-2, 7-0 North Piedmont) advanced to the fourth round of the NCHSAA 4AA state playoffs last season.

The 34-year-old Carter, who spent his college years playing for Mars Hill, spoke with Union County Weekly to talk about his transition and what folks can expect from the Mavs this season.

What side of the ball do you enjoy most?

I like defense, but by nature I’m an offensive guy. That’s what I played through high school and college. I was an offensive lineman, so I tend to lean to the offensive side, but they’re both enjoyable.

What would you say your philosophy is as a head coach?

As a head coach you’re not responsible

for just one side of the ball anymore. You’re responsible for both. To sum up my coaching philosophy in a couple of terms would be: put the kids in the best situations to be successful. We’re going to run some kind of four-man front defensively. We’ve been practicing as a 4-3 team, and we’re going to run a spread offense. Both of those schemes fit our personnel very with our available talent, so that’s what we’re going to go with.

coach (Gary Moore) that’s got like 40 years of coaching experience. He’s been an offensive coordinator, a defensive coordinator, and a head coach at three different schools. Gary’s going to be a big benefit to our staff.

I hired a linebacker coach (David Baker) that I like, and I hired a new running backs coach (Glenn Deveaux) as well.”

This program has had success in the past, but in recent years it’s struggled. How are you going to build this program?

Have there been any kids that have stood out to you so far?

I’ll never say anything bad about previous staffs. Those guys did a good job with the program. I think right now with myself being the fourth head coach that these seniors have had, the kids just want continuity. They want a guy that they know who is going to be here for the long haul just to create some continuity amongst the staff and systems and hearing the same stuff from year to year and not necessarily having to reinvent stuff, because you have a new system and a new guy coming in every year.”

Who are the new coaches that you’ve brought in?

“I’ve brought in a new defensive line

There are four or five senior kids that aren’t necessarily “rah, rah” real verbal kids, but they’re the kind of kids that are leaders, because the other kids see how hard they work. A couple of those would be Henry Fair, Justin Bloos, Devin Adkins, John Wells, Cooper Donahue have all been very eager to learn, hardworking and have been leaders on the field.

What’s something that will help Mav fans get to know you a little better?

I’m new to the area. I was born in Statesville, lived in Iredell County other than college my whole life. I’m a huge sports fan, huge Michigan fan, which will probably alienate some people

around here, but I’m also a big Panthers fan, Cubs fan. I love sports. During my free time I don’t get to do it as much, but I do like to read. I’m really into Harleys. I own a bike. That’s been kind of fun. I bought one about three months ago. I’m new riding, and I love it. It’s a nice tension reliever, something to get your mind off what’s going on, a stress reliever more than anything. It’s been fun.

What are your expectations for the season?

When it comes to expectations, and I’ve told the kids this since I’ve gotten here, I have no expectations for wins and losses. More than anything I just preach to our kids about being the best we can be every day, executing the offense and defense to the best of our ability. When we do those types of things the wins and losses are going to take care of themselves.

More than anything I want us to focus right now on us and be the best that we possibly can be. Everyone is in their second week of summer workouts.

Providence Dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Alex Brea had a stellar season with the Chargers. Brea finished 15-4 in singles matches and 12-6 in doubles matches, and was named to the all-conference team and all-state team. The talented Brea will continue his career at Appalachian State.
