Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, This letter is written in support of John Urban, candidate for Matthews town council. John is the principal of Urban Architectural Group, based in Matthews. His knowledge of architecture and urban planning, combined with a common sense approach to issues a growing community faces, will bring an informed and candid perspective to the board. As a Matthews resident and business owner, John understands the need for good growth while maintaining our town’s charm and appeal.

For the past 16 years, John and his wife Terry have lived in Matthews. His dedication and commitment to our community is unquestioned. Larry Lester Matthews Dear Editor, I read with interest Jonathan McElvy's piece in the Matthews Mint Hill Weekly, and while there are things I agree with, there are other things I think the media could do a better job with.

For example, I do agree that a mass shooter should not have his name mentioned and given the attention he may seek. However, what I think media can do is focus more on what, if anything, is being done to stop the 30,000-plus gun deaths in our nation every year.

On the point of Planned Parenthood, the media could have done a better job in exposing the company whose "heavily edited" videos were a total scam and witch hunt against Planned Parenthood. While you are correct that PP changed their policy for fetal tissue, they are now going beyond what is legal in that they are not permitting any funds for even basic handling charges. The media could have also reported how fetal tissue research has been critical in helping to find potential cures for SIDS, Alzheimer's as well as contributing to the Polio vaccine.

So, yes I agree the media is powerful, but they also have an obligation to educate.

Incumbent Matthews, Mint Hill mayors address pre-election questions

As time ticks down to Election Day, Nov. 3, Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly is giving readers one final look into the issues surrounding the 2015 municipal elections in Matthews and Mint Hill.

This week, we look to the incumbent mayors of Matthews and Mint Hill, Jim Taylor and Ted Biggers, respectively. Both are seeking re-election, along with four out of six incumbents on the Matthews Board of Commissioners and all four incumbents on the Mint Hill Board of Commissioners.

What are the biggest issues facing smaller municipalities?

Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor: There are many issues facing municipalities across North Carolina, but the biggest issues smaller towns are facing is the continued loss of local control due to the N.C. General Assembly passing regulations limiting what we have the ability to regulate within our boundaries.

Who knows what is best for a local community other than those elected from within that community? Representatives from hundreds of miles away in Raleigh should not be making those decisions. Matthews and Mint Hill share a border, and the town leaders should continue to have a say in what is allowed in our individual communities, not developers or builders. We need to continue to have good working relationships with our local representatives and senators to insure they are voting and representing the views and direction of those communities they represent.

Mint Hill Mayor Ted Biggers: Because of their geographic location, as well as other factors, all small municipalities do not face the same issues. Because Mint Hill and Matthews share a common border with Charlotte, we are both vulnerable to urban sprawl and the problems that accompany it. Traffic congestion, overcrowding of our schools and an increase in crime are just a few examples. The fact that I-485 runs through both of our towns not only routes additional traffic through our towns, but also places additional developmental pressures on us. The small towns must compete with the large cities, and with each other, for their share of state highway funds. Small towns must also decide how much commercial growth to allow and how dense their residential developments are going to be. The small towns must also be diligent in monitoring not only the voting record of our elected state senators and representatives, but also the initiatives they are supporting that impede upon the independent decision making of the small municipalities.

What are the three most important issues your town is facing?

Taylor: Economic Development – We need to promote smart economic develop-

ment. Planning for the next 30 years not just next week. I will continue to push for smart growth that allows for Matthews to remain vibrant and desirable in the future.

We need to promote good jobs with good salaries so that people and businesses will want to be here. We have to be choosy going forward and insure we promote economic growth that is good for the long term ... I will continue to advocate in those realms to make Matthews the best it can be.

Traffic – Working with the state and NCDOT to find partnership, due to the new funding criteria, where we can leverage town funds with state funds to get our projects moving faster. We need to provide travelers options around Matthews, rather than going through Matthews, and looking to increase the grid system in downtown Matthews to help relieve congestion. I will continue to advocate for Matthews on the CRTPO (Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization) for road projects in Matthews.

Historic Preservation – I will continue to support saving our history by working with the private sector rather than the town funding all the efforts. Going forward, there needs to be partnerships that bring in private funds.

We need to be aware that part of the Matthews charm is the small-town “feel” – we need to make sure we preserve this feel while managing the growth of a larger town of 30,000.

Biggers: Mint Hill’s biggest issue is resisting urban sprawl. We have long been a mostly rural, small-town bedroom suburb of Charlotte. We will have to work hard to maintain our smalltown charm. Traffic will continue to be an issue.

To a large degree, the way we approach our growth will determine how big an issue it becomes. We will also be challenged to ensure our children attend schools close to home and that “our schools” receive their fair share of the available educational dollars. I will continue to encourage the board of commissioners to stay on a course of controlled quality growth, directing most of our commercial growth to our downtown area. The residential areas outside of our downtown should be mostly traditional Mint Hill subdivisions.

How will you continue leading the town's board of commissioners?

Taylor: I feel Matthews is the best community in all of North Carolina, and I want that to continue. My objective is to lead the board and continue to promote discussion and open dialogue. I have a proven track record and will continue to lead as I have been doing. The vision for Matthews has been promoting a more walkable community, and I will continue to look for ways to make this happen, by increasing our greenway system, making downtown more pedestrian friendly and giving people more reasons to come and visit downtown Matthews. We have provided many events to get people to come to downtown – festivals, concerts, First Thursday, Food Truck Friday and Hometown Holiday, to name a few. I will advocate strongly continuing (see Mayor Election on page 8)

MARA inagural softball tournament raises $3Kfor Ellie’s Hats MATTHEWS – The Matthews Athletic & Recreation Association (MARA) recently hosted the inaugural Ellie’s Hats Charitable Softball Tournament to raise funds for Ellie’s Hats, a nonprofit that collects hats of all sizes, shapes, colors and designs for children fighting cancer.

Waxhaw resident Robin Viar organized the tournament. Viar is a stage 4 colon cancer survivor who worked with her two teenaged children, Katy and Reid, to host a hat drive last year in honor of Ellie’s Hats.

“The goal of the tournament was to raise funds and awareness, so Ellie’s Hats can make a difference in the lives of children with cancer in North Carolina,” Viar said in a news release.

Players also participated in a Home Run Derby, in which they tried to hit as many home runs as they could in 10 pitches. Players collected pledges to support Ellie’s Hats, with player Piper Edwards from the Omni Elite Burn team, raising $960 – the most money raised by an individual player.

Business vendors included Juniors Scoop Italian Ice, Sisters Crochet NC and MARA’s concession stand, and all donated a portion of their proceeds to Ellie’s Hats. The event also included T-shirt sales, a photo booth, 50/50 raffle and more.

The tournament raised more than $3,200, Viar said in the release.

Wise Acres Farm to host free tailgating for Panthers game INDIAN TRAIL – Wise Acres Organic Farm will host a free tailgating event on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. for Carolina Panthers fans.

Locally sourced food truck Green Go Taco will be on site selling food, and refreshments will be available for purchase in the barn. The event also will include face painting and a variety of family-friendly activities, according to a news release.

“Wise Acres Organic Farm (is) local destination for seasonal organic produce and family fun … (and) a favorite for strawberry and pumpkin picking,” the business said in the release. “… Football drills, prizes and other activities will help get (Panthers) fans ready for the big game.”

News Briefs Matthews assistant manager Jamie Justice to resign Nov. 16 MATTHEWS – Assistant manager Jamie Justice with the town of Matthews accepted the position of manager for the town of Davidson, beginning Nov. 16. Justice has been with Matthews since 2008.

“The town has been fortunate to have Jamie on staff, with his years of experience and passion to see the town succeed,” said town manager Hazen Blodgett in a news release. “While we are saddened by this news, we are happy for Jamie and his family at this new opportunity. We wish him the best for the future.”

Justice was responsible for administrative services for the town’s finance, human resources, information technology and risk management departments.

“I will always be grateful to Matthews for hiring me and I know I would not be in this position in my career without my experience here,” said Justice. “I hope I have contributed to the success in Matthews in what small way I could.”

Justice holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Methodist University and a Master’s of Public Administration in city and county management from Appalachian State University. His last day with Matthews will be Nov. 13.

“I’m exceptionally proud of Jamie and his accomplishments over the last seven years,” said Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor. “Matthews is a better place because of him and his work. I’ve spoken with Mayor Woods and share his excitement for

the town of Davidson. Jamie will do an excellent job there. It’s a loss for Matthews but I’m happy for both Jamie and the town of Davidson.”

Mecklenburg to become 51st state

Mecklenburg County should consider building a wall. Kind of like the fancy one Donald Trump is talking about along the Mexico border, only ours will be designed to keep state legislators out of our lives.

Scratch that. Let’s pound on the proverbial nuke button as if it were a snooze bar. It’s time for Mecklenburg County to wake up and secede from North Carolina. We, the people of Mecklenburg, should become the 51st state of the Union – the first state born of the 21st century – the state of the future.

North Carolina seceded from the United States 154 Justin Vick years ago in a sequence of events that led to the Civil War. And the people of Ballantyne love flirting with the idea of separating from Charlotte.

But Mecklenburg County doesn’t have time for flirting. We must thrust ourselves toward secession now before we see detrimental damage from the growing rift between North Carolina’s urban and rural counties.

Legislators recently inserted language that would limit the amount of state funding going to light rail projects – an obvious slap in the face to progressive cities like Charlotte and Raleigh.

For years, the North Carolina General Assembly allowed politics to interfere with state transporta-

tion funding. The Charlotte region has long had some of the most congested roads, and the only way we could get improvements to them was to reluctantly add toll lanes. By the way, if you hate the idea of toll lanes, I’m sure Mecklenburg seceding from North Carolina would null and void the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s $500 million public-private partnership with Spanish company Cintra to build toll lanes from Charlotte to Mooresville along Interstate 77.

Forget toll lanes for our new state. Let’s just put a turnpike at our border, requiring visitors from North Carolina to pay us a small fee. Anyone with a government license plate would have to pay triple.

Then you have socialists masquerading as Republicans in the N.C. General Assembly. They want to redistribute our hard-earned sales taxes dollars to counties that aren’t making any effort to increase visitor spending.

Think about all of the economic development opportunities that required a significant amount of investment to infrastructure – Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets and NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Shouldn’t we be entitled to most of the sales tax generated from these attractions?

Becoming the 51st state would give us an opportunity to create an efficient state government from scratch. Naturally, Pat McCrory should get the nod to serve as our first governor until we have formal elections.

In his first act as governor, McCrory should dump his North Carolina pin in the trash and burn it as Charlotte native and 16-time world wrestling

champion Ric “Nature Boy” Flair applies the official Mecklenburg pin to his lapel. Coincidently, our state motto will be “Woooooooo!”

Life will change in other ways.

No more Common Core educational curriculum. School lunch rooms will serve pork chops in the shape of Mecklenburg County. Our state flag will be checkered – because we’re winners.

Mecklenburg should recruit adjacent counties to help expand our borders. Securing Union, Cabarrus and Iredell counties are especially vital to our state economy.

We need the Cabarrus County resources of Charlotte Motor Speedway, Concord Mills, the North Carolina Research Campus and the Dale Earnhardt statute in Kannapolis.

Iredell County would allow us to consolidate the east side of Lake Norman and claim Mooresville’s NASCAR teams.

Union County makes sense because there are so many people commuting to Charlotte for jobs… and Union’s aerodynamics industry would add diversity to Mecklenburg’s economy.

New towns are sure to emerge from neighborhoods (Ballantyne, SouthPark and University City), and some of the region’s most popular local leaders could very well become state and national leaders.

Despite being the architect of this new government, I prefer no recognition. But if the citizens must create a statute in my likeness, I hope the sculptor corrects my terrible posture and trims about 40 pounds.

these events and finding more. Working with the board to make sure we have a community that remains safe and attractive for people and businesses to want to be here. We have a wonderful town, and I am passionate that our job is to make sure Matthews is a terrific place 10, 20, 30 years from now. I will continue down that path and keep our long-term vision alive and strong.

Biggers: The current board and I have worked well together to ensure that Mint Hill retains that small-town feel. I will do my best to lead the board in the same manner I have led for the past 16 years. I want Mint Hill to be the safest town in North Carolina. I want our citizens to feel safe in their homes and neighborhoods and for our children to be safe at school. We will continue to work closely with our police and fire departments to ensure our citizens have the very highest level of protection. Our board should encourage low-density, high-quality growth. We should continue to make downtown Mint Hill a more pedestrian friendly environment. I will work to keep taxes low and to promote small business growth in our downtown. I will work closely with our school board representatives and the mayors of the other Mecklenburg County small towns to ensure the stability of our schools.

How should Matthews and Mint Hill work to support each other?

Taylor: Matthews and Mint Hill work very well together, and I expect that relationship to continue. We have a lot in common, and both have high standards for our communities. Mayor Biggers and I have known each other for years and work very well together for the betterment of both towns. In most situations, the desires and visions for Matthews and Mint Hill are aligned, and as mayors of these two great communities, we work well together to find solutions that are in our collective best interest. Both Mayor Biggers and I communicate together regularly on many items involving our joint interest, and our visions for this

part of the county are very similar. Matthews and Mint Hill have some of the best schools in CMS, and we have both advocated strongly for our towns regarding high educational standards for the schools in our communities. Both towns understand that we share a border and value to Idlewild Volunteer Fire Department. This department serves and protects both towns, and we understand the value that this organization brings to both communities. We both advocate for strong public safety and support our two police departments and value the fact that together we have some of the lowest crime rates around. I view Matthews and Mint Hill as sister communities and two of the best communities in Mecklenburg County. I expect both towns to continue working together going forward on road improvements, school assignment and expansions, controlling development along our borders, as well as advocating good economic development opportunities going forward.

Biggers: I believe Mint Hill and Matthews work well together. The town of Matthews has been a good neighbor and has partnered with us on many occasions. Mayor Taylor has done a great job of representing Matthews and has been a strong advocate and ally of not only Mint Hill, but of all the small towns in Mecklenburg County. Mayor Taylor and I are friends, and we both realize that in most cases, what is good for Mint Hill is good for Matthews, and vice versa. Mayor Taylor and I serve together on the regional transportation board CRTPO. We work together to support each town’s individual transportation needs. We also work closely together with each other on regional issues such as: the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Libraries and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts and Science Council. The towns have also worked closely together in our support of the Idlewild Volunteer Fire Department, which serves both towns.

We will need to work with and support each other in order to ensure our children receive the best possible education Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has to offer. The town managers and staffs of both towns are familiar with each other and have worked well together on many occasions. I will continue to support and promote a spirit of cooperation between Mint Hill and Matthews.

Magnet program changes could come to CMS

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools staff rolled out changes for the district’s magnet school programs at its Oct. 13 board of education meeting, which could mean new developments in south Mecklenburg.

The new plan could make a difference in the upcoming student reassignment that could blend varying ethnicities and socioeconomic status of district students, but the changes won’t take place at least until the next school year.

The district hopes to expand seats at current magnet school programs, particularly with “undersubscribed” schools, as well as expand magnet offerings.

Some students couldn’t participate in magnet programs because of identified transportation zones with specific shuttle stops at central locations the district established years ago to cut costs. They were limited in access to specific schools because of those zones. This means a Matthews or Mint Hill student could only receive transportation to schools in the “green” transportation zone and south Charlotte students could only receive transportation to schools in the “blue” zone, according to CMS. The district announced Oct. 13 to eliminate shuttle stop transportation in favor of “common stops” in the 2016-17 school year to hopefully grow magnet school participation

and access. Superintendent Ann Clark said at the meeting eliminating the shuttle plan will cost about $6 million in the 2016-17 budget, but a specific cost would involve various factors. Clark said she would have more details at the Nov. 10 meeting when the board is expected to vote on the plan.

“It is the recommendation from the superintendent, myself, and the staff that we eliminate all of shuttle stops to create equal opportunity across Mecklenburg County for all students to make that choice to attend a particular magnet school,” Clark said.

New changes also involve dropping admission requirements for some schools that were set to ensure students were prepared to attend the school. Staff hopes for schools with lower enrollment that more students can access the programs.

Additional programs in the coming years could include two more middle college high schools on Central Piedmont Community College campuses, such as Harper, expanding Motenssori programs into middle and high schools and potentially to create a new arts magnet or STEM or IB magnet program in the south or southwestern zone of the district, but no date or locations have been established.

The board of education must vote on the plan at its Nov. 10 meeting to comply with budget implications.

No word on CMS superintendent search

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Superintendent Ann Clark has had quite a year.

Last fall, Superintendent Heath Morrison resigned and Clark was hoisted into the role with the plan to retire in summer 2016 as a new superintendent was selected by the board of education.

However, there has been recent noise that some community and business leaders want to keep Clark in the leadership chair, while others want anything but that.

The board of education was tasked with determining what type of person they would like to see in the superintendent’s chair in July, but no word from the board has been presented since.

Despite the board’s silence, some parents have brought their opinions forward.

Colette Forest, a mother of third-grader in a CMS magnet school, said she believes there has been a disconnect along racial lines in which black communities were not effectively supported. She emailed many community members urging them not to support extending Clark’s contract.

“I ask that a school board demonstrate your stated commitment to educate all of our communities children by selecting a superintendent who will bring us together as opposed to tearing us apart,” Forest said during the Oct. 13 board of education meeting.

She suggested that some of the CMS lead-

ers’ decision-making did not reflect all students, but rather a “callous disregard to some children,” namely those in the black community. In 2010, then-Superintendent Peter Gorman and CMS leaders closed multiple schools, many in mostly-black neighborhoods.

Forest called for a “unifying leader” in a superintendent, which she said might not be Clark.

“The predicament we find ourselves in (is) with the majority of our schools marked by racial, social and economic segregation and widespread distrust of CMS,” she said. “Leadership and ability to address the challenges that we face requires that we select a superintendent who is truly capable of giving all parts of Charlotte the fresh start that it desperately deserves and needs.”

Forest was not alone, however, as multiple parents stood with signs and spoke in agreement.

The superintendent search, or lack thereof, will set the tone for future students’ reassignment, which could alleviate economic isolation and racial and socioeconomic segregation.

The boiling environment could deter future candidates from coming to CMS or provide an unsettling tone as CMS would have the fifth new leader in five years.

Some suspect the board of education will not come forward with an opinion until after Election Day at the risk of skewing political views. Regardless, CMS parents will still have to wait.

Rocky River students rock on with High School Nation

MINT HILL – Rocky River High School students took a break on Oct. 19 to rock out, thanks to High School Nation bringing a free music festival to their campus.

Jimmy Cantillon and his brother, Kevin, started High School Nation, the country’s largest high school touring agency, as a way to introduce teens to different careers in the music and art industries, which isn’t taught often in public school education.

The music festival featured a concert by Drake Bell, Cady Groves, Heather Russell and History in the Making; a showcase of interactive tents with opportunities to learn instruments, explore music journalism and more; and a $10,000plus donation package of arts-focused supplies. The students could make their own tote bags and other crafts to take home.

“It’s our way as a company of giving back and doing what we can to try to keep the art alive in public schools around the country,” Jimmy Cantillon said.

High School Nation seeks to encourage students to connect with the arts as a hobby or a career.

“During childhood and growing up, we can all agree that high school was easily the most confusing time and there’s so much that you are experiencing for the first time and so many changes,” Cantillon said. “… Having been to so many schools around the country and meeting so many amazing kids everywhere, it’s important for them to have something that they can escape to when they’re worrying about peer pressure and image issues.”

He’d rather adolescents find a positive outlet to alleviate their worries than the alternative. Cantillon also believes arts

education goes beyond providing emotional support, citing studies that show children who are exposed to the arts from an early age are more likely to have higher test scores and maturity levels.

High School Nation selects schools in different regions of the U.S. and selects a school with a large student body with 35 to 60 percent of students who apply for free or reduced lunch.

“We want to make an impact and we want to pick schools where we feel like the impact is going to be felt,” Cantillon said.

For the past few years, South Mecklenburg High School in south Charlotte has held the area’s tour location, but due to construction on campus, South Meck couldn’t hold the event this year.

“It’s amazing that this has fallen into our laps,” said Rocky River Fine Arts Chair Matthew Webster.

Rocky River Principal Brandy Nelson asked Webster if the school wanted to pursue the tour and the arts chair said he was “astounded” by the event and Rocky River became the only high school in the state to host High School Nation.

Webster was impressed that the art and music festival comes to campus and provides extracurricular cultural offerings and sponsors provide art donations to the school.

“I’m for anything that allows the students to have a cultural watch tower. The whole school is going to attend (which is required by High School Nation) and we want the whole student body to be part of it,” Webster said. “It’s a positive and celebratory thing that allows them to have a shared experience around music that so many kids can relate to.”

The arts chair hopes Rocky River can host the event in the future.

High school, college students could be ‘holiday heroes’ The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) wants to give high school and college students a chance to win a $1,000 college scholarship this holiday season by hosting a blood drive in their community, in the “Holiday Heroes” program.

Students must host a blood drive in their community between Nov. 21 and 30 or between Dec. 19 and Jan. 9; recruit community members to donate blood; and collect at least 25 units.

CBCC will award a $1,000 college scholarship to the student who collects the most units.

“Scholarship programs like ‘Holiday Heroes’ give us an opportunity to engage and reward our students who play a key role in our blood collection efforts,” Martin Grable, president and CEO of the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas, said in a news release. “Blood donations tend to drop significantly during the holiday season when students are out of school. The inability to host blood drives at high schools coupled with busy schedules, inclement weather and winter illnesses creates a significant need. So, students and others in the community willing to host blood drives during the ‘giving’ season are heroes, helping to save local lives.”

Students make up more than 20 percent of CBCC’s donor base, according to the release, and CBCC has awarded more than 300 scholarships and grants since 2009.

The T-shirt said, ‘Mom Likes Me Best,’ and I owned it

I don’t know where it came from, but somehow I came into possession of a Tshirt that had emblazoned on the front of it, “Mom Likes Me Best.”

It was royal blue with white letters that had red trim. Rev. Tony Marciano The letters themselves had to be at least three inches tall.

You could see it a mile away.

I never wore the shirt but didn’t want to give it away. After all, one day, (not sure when that day would come), I would actually wear it. The truth is, I never wore it. It was just great to own it. When going through my closet, I would see it and smile.

There is still sibling rivalry in my family. With an aging mother who lives with me, I’ve learned that as the children take care of their mother (mine has dementia and thinks I am her nephew) all the unresolved childhood issues begin to surface. It’s been amazing how well we have

worked together (or not worked together) to schedule what we call “Nana care.” It reminds me of the days where chores had to be done and who was able to get out of the work and who got “stuck” doing them.

Today, I have the role I played at 10 years old of being the referee between the three of us. So when I asked my mother the question “Who do you love the best?” the real reason for asking the question is that maybe we are still jockeying for the position we wanted when we were in grammar school. We wanted to hear, “Mom likes me best,” but mother was always on to us. She always replied, “I love you all the same.” Then she smiled.

After she said that, I always turned to my mother and said, “Remember mom, who takes care of your finances?” She’d smile, look at the three of us and say, “I still love you all the same.”

Recently, I read the book, “The Happiness Project.” The author challenged the reader to “clean out your closet.” I did that and felt so much better. I donated the shirt to the Charlotte Rescue Mission.

A few days later I saw “my shirt” being worn by one of the residents of the Rebound men’s program. I smiled each time I saw him wearing it. I learned he was really proud of it. When I saw him wearing

it, it reminded me of the message every one of us longs to hear, “We are loved.”

Author Sally Lloyd-Jones in writing “The Jesus Storybook Bible – a Children’s Bible” says this about what happened in the Garden of Eden: “Eve picked the fruit and ate some. Adam ate some too and a terrible lie came into the world.

It would never leave. It would live on in every human heart, whispering to every one of God’s children, ‘God doesn’t love me.’”

If we believe the lie, we fill the void in so many different ways. Prior to coming to the Rescue Mission, our residents filled it with drugs and alcohol. Other ways we fill that void is with food, work, sex, gambling, power, rage and religion (which is not a relationship to God). We fill the void with a “temporary fix” and feel-good about ourselves. But, those “feel good feelings” only last a few moments then we have to repeat it over and over to get that feeling back.

The shirt almost said it right. Instead of reading “Mom Likes Me Best,” I wish it read, “God Loves Me Best.”

And can I add, “He loves you and me unconditionally.”

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Matthews creates standards for developers

MATTHEWS – Matthews continues to plan how development projects will look over the next 20 years, focusing much of its attention lately on pedestrian features downtown.

The town recently posted a survey on its website in which residents could select their favorite types of streets, crosswalks and intersections based on pictures from other towns.

Matthews will hold a public hearing Nov. 9 regarding the plan. Residents can view the plan online in the coming days.

“The end goal is to adopt a document that gives parameters for how development is going to be improved,” Senior Planner Jay Camp said, noting a future phase of planning will specifically address building design.

The town tapped McGill Associates to draft a streetscape improvement plan for $30,000 in April. The urban design document will build on the Matthews Downtown Master Plan, approved in 2013.

“Much of the charm of Matthews lies in something that has occurred naturally over time,” according to the downtown master plan. “The lack of uniform sidewalks, differing street types, building setbacks and tree types lends a very natural and organic feel to the pedestrian experience.”

The downtown master plan outlines ways

new development should employ design standards.

The streetscape improvement plan will address what cross sections of roads will look like, including building setbacks, sidewalks, planting strips, way-finding signs and multiuse paths.

“I think people move to Matthews because we have a semblance of small-town charm,” Camp said. “Even though we have 30,000 residents, there has always been conscious effort to maintain small-town amenities but at the same time maintain some level of continued growth.”

There isn’t as much land in Matthews for development as people would think, Camp said, noting the town is more built-out than neighbors, such as Indian Trail or Mint Hill.

While the primary development pattern in Matthews has been single-family subdivisions, the town could be looking at higher degrees of density, such as homes on smaller lots, condos or duplexes.

“One of the different factors that separates Matthews from a lot of small towns in this region of North Carolina is we have a lot of infill that’s happened in the last 10 to 15 years,” he said. “A lot of historic downtowns focus on facade improvements or renovations. They’ve got a lot more building stock.

We’ve got to get it right when new buildings come in.”

Independence cross-country runner making most of senior year

Independence senior cross-country runner Camille Martin is leading the charge for the Patriots.

She’s worked hard, but her parents, Eddie and Rhonda Martin, deserve some credit too. They’re the ones who made her run – yes, made her run – so she could stay in shape for soccer. They’re runners too. In fact, the couple runs 10 miles together each morning.

Martin’s father is her motivator when it comes to running. They ran five miles together in the mornings during the summer.

“That helped to get in shape for crosscountry,” Camille Martin said. “It was really helpful, because he helped be a pace setter. He would go faster and I would have to run with him and try to stay at his pace.”

Independence coach Ken Waldron said it’s great to have parents who are so supportive of their children.

“They keep up with her academics,” Waldron said. “They take her to extra races. Her mom and dad are always there supporting her, and that means a lot to a kid.”

Waldron has coached Martin since she was in middle school during a summer program with the Charlotte Flight, a competitive track and field club team in the area. It didn’t take long for him to notice her high ceiling of potential.

Martin worked out regularly during the

summer, and has seen the fruit of that labor paying off with a substantial improvement from her junior year to this season.

The results have been tangible. She finished second in the McAlpine Pre-Conference Meet with a time of 19 minutes and 48 seconds on Oct. 14. Martin won the Charlotte CrossCountry Invitational Sept. 25, running it in 19:53. She won the Myers Park Home Meet Sept. 17, running it in 21:36.71, and finished second at the Weddington Home Meet on Sept. 1, finishing in 20:43.

But for Martin, she realized her potential when she finished sub-20. Now, her goal is to finish under 19 minutes and set a new personal record. She’s at her best when she runs and doesn’t think about it.

“When my times don’t get faster I kind of become discouraged, then that effects me in my next run,” Martin said. “I think if just took the bad times and said I did bad and moved on from it, then my times would get even faster.”

Waldron said Martin is leading the pack, and runs with the boys in practice. That makes a big difference, because they push her to work harder and get better.

“She’s taking it more seriously,” Waldron said. “She’s a whole lot easier to coach, because she’s willing to do exactly what you tell them what to do the way you tell them how to do it.

She’s at her best when she’s running out front in a race.

“When I’ve got Camille focused on her task and I’ve got her arms and her legs and every

thing running in unison she’s at her best, she’s on top of her game. The mental part of her race I think is there. She works on her own and trains on her own outside of being here. I think she does a decent job of that.”

If all goes as planned, Martin will continue her cross-country career at the collegiate level.

She’s receiving interest from UNC-Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Hampton University and Queens University.

Martin also is driven academically. She hopes to either study pre-med or pre-law in college.

But before she turns her attention to college, she’ll have to finish out her high school crosscountry career and likely excel during the track season, where she runs the 800-meter, mile, 4x400-meter relay, 4x800-meter relay and 3,000-meter races.

“Years ago, I used her in a 4x1 relay and a 4x2 relay. She’s kind of multi-purpose,” Waldron said. “There’s been times where she’s the second fastest on my girls team, which is unusual for an 800-meter runner. She’s not a true sprinter, but she’s got sprint speed that you can put her in and you don’t miss a beat with her.”

Waldron added Martin is between a long distance runner and sprinter. Combine those qualities with her hard work, and she has an edge that separates her from opponents.

Week nine football game previews Harding at Providence Friday at 7 p.m.

It appears the Panthers have nearly solidified a postseason berth, but a win over the Bisons would all but cement it. Drake DeIuliis isn’t going to beat opponents through the air, but has proven he can be a load for opposing defenses when it comes to rushing.

Providence’s suffocating defense enables it to compete with nearly any team, and should be dominant against Harding. Defensive end Dru Seabrook and linebackers Tyler Pistorio and Jordan Fehr have led the charge, and have kept the Panthers in most games.

The combination of Providence’s strong defense and improving offense doesn’t bode well for Harding.

Independence at Myers Park Friday at 7 p.m.

The Mustangs could have moved to the driver’s in the Southwestern 4A, but their loss to Butler has them playing catch up to the Bulldogs and Patriots. A win over Independence and a Butler loss can change that, but the Patriots are no cupcake.

Independence has made significant strides since the first month of the season, winning five of its last six games. Myers Park quarterback Jack Davidson and wide receiver Brandon Adams will need to be on their game, and they must get some help to. Independence’s defense led by linebackers Rob Casanova, Tylon Clawson and Jerome Cochran yield little, and will be on the attack against the Mustangs.

Porter Ridge at Butler Friday at 7 p.m.

The Pirates are battling, but their ship might sink in Matthews. Butler’s defense, which has been opportunistic all season, will be similar to sharks smelling blood in water and feasting in Porter Ridge’s backfield.

Butler’s offense is still looking to get back on track after facing midseason obstacles and adversity. However, running backs Antwan Bivens and Chrisean Davis-Pinckney have filled in nicely, and give the Bulldogs a dynamic two-back combo who will wear Porter Ridge’s defense down.
