Starr & Dickens celebrates 25 years, gives back

MATTHEWS – When Dr. Gary Starr completed his orthodontic registry 25 years ago, he wanted to open a practice in Matthews from scratch.

At the time, there was no hospital in Matthews, no Crestdale Middle School and no Elizabeth Lane Elementary School. His colleagues discouraged him, claiming Matthews wasn’t ready for a full-time orthodontist.

Against all odds, he broke ground and opened a practice with one employee.

Today, his practice is now a partnership – Starr & Dickens Orthodontics – with fellow orthodontist, Dr. Steven Dickens, and 16 fulltime employees.

As the practice prepared for its 25th anniversary, the doctors wanted to commemorate the occasion by giving back to the community.

“When I first approached Dr. Starr about doing something to celebrate our anniversary, he immediately said these words: ‘We have been so blessed by this community over the years that I would like to use our anniversary as an opportunity to give back,’” said Anna Fenno, Starr & Dickens team member and coordinator of community and schools outreach programs for the practice.

The doctors chose to host a pre-Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the Matthews HELP Center, which provides food and other support to area families in need.

“Partnering with the community is something that is very important to us,” Dickens

MATTHEWS – The Matthews Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Holiday Gingerbread House Competition and Display.

The contest will offer prizes in three categories: amateur – child/family (individuals 17 years old or younger, or a family group that includes a child); amateur – adult (individuals 18 years old or older); and professional.

The houses will be professionally judged on the morning of Dec. 5, a Saturday. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in each category. Key factors in the judging will be “first impression, proportion, artistry, difficulty and Matthews influence,” according to a news release.

To be eligible, all houses must adhere to the following rules, detailed in the news release: • The house must be smaller than 24-by-24 -by-24 inches.

• All components other than the base must be made entirely of edible materials. Wood, cardboard, wire or other non-edible materials are prohibited.

• Write the category and contact information on a 3-by-5-inch card and place underneath the base.

• Make sure the creator’s name is hidden until after judging is completed.

• Displays must be sturdy enough to be moved if necessary.

Contestants must bring finished houses by the Matthews Chamber office, at 210 Matthews Station St., between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Nov. 30 through Dec. 4. Houses will remain on display through Dec. 23.

Meet Matthews’ first AfricanAmerican elected official Larry Whitley looking forward to bringing fresh leadership to town

MATTHEWS – Rev. Dr. Larry Whitley is a jack of many trades.

In his 63 years, Whitley has served as a state trooper, sergeant on a drug-and-addiction team and captain with the N.C. Highway Patrol. He’s also been in Christian ministry for more than two decades, currently serving his 18th year as pastor of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. He’s survived cancer twice.

He’s been a husband, father and grandfather.

Now, Whitley can add politician to his impressive résumé. The commissioner-elect won one of six open seats on the Matthews Board of Commissioners in last week’s election. When he’s sworn in next month, Whitley will be the only first-time commissioner serving on the board – all four incumbent candidates were re-elected, and Commissioner-elect John Urban, who ran as a challenger, previously served on the board from 2009 to 2013.

Serving as an elected official might be a first for Whitley, but he’s also a first for the town of Matthews: the first African-American to serve on the town board since Matthews was incorporated in 1879.

When asked about becoming the town’s first African-American elected official, Whitley didn’t make a big deal about it – he’s used to being among the first minorities to accomplish a number of things.

“When I came on the (N.C.) Highway Patrol in 1975, I think I was the 18th minority hired in the state as a state trooper,” he said.

“When I was (stationed) in Anson County, I was the first African-American to be patrolled down there.

“Being first is not unusual. It is, in a sense that it’s 2015, that we’re still making firsts, but I’m just happy that it’s me. The timing is all in God’s plan, and I’m glad to be a part of that.”

What truly fueled Whitley’s campaign wasn’t his ethnic background; it was his faith in God that drove him to seek election.

After he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2008 and then ALS leukemia in 2013 – which was caused by the chemotherapy that treated his lymphoma – Whitley faced a tough recovery. Over the course of five years, he endured a seven-day coma, underwent a bone marrow transplant and spent 51 consecutive days at Duke University Hospital following surgery. He was given a feeding tube, a tracheostomy tube and had to learn to walk and talk again.

Whitley believes he was kept alive for a reason, which fueled his desire to run for office.

“Constantly, God blessed me, healed me and brought me back,” Whitley said. “When I came back, the Lord spoke to my heart and said he wanted some godly people in government and wanted me to be a voice for him.

This country has put God out of government, and this country was founded on ‘in God we trust.’”

Whitley also hopes to be a voice for the Crestdale community – a historic AfricanAmerican community near downtown Matthews, where Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist is located. During his tenure at the 136-yearold church, Whitley has become an advocate for the community, using his church as a conduit.

Mt. Moriah has added basketball and tennis courts and hosts an annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament for the community.

The church also opened a day care and after -school program – which was named Child Care Provider of the Month for July 2015 by Child Care Aware of America – and offers an annual summer camp.

“We’re very proud and thankful that we have that honor,” Whitley said. “We do run a first-class day care.”

Whitley hopes his influence as town commissioner will help the town address several issues within Crestdale, such as widening some streets, the safety of an area railroad crossing and improving walkability from Crestdale to downtown Matthews.

When he’s not pastoring or focusing on his political career, Whitley enjoys spending time with his wife of nearly 44 years, Chris Latham Whitley, along with his two daughters, five granddaughters and one grandson.

He also occasionally heads east to visit family in Zebulon, North Carolina, where he grew up, and loves to cook, grill and help care for the family farm in eastern North Carolina.

Whitley said he’s grateful for the community’s support and is looking forward to serving the town come December.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge … to try to do the best I can to make Matthews the best it can be in the future,” he said.

You're active in the Mint Hill community – what are you involved in?

My goal is to make people more aware of Mint Hill Arts and the Historic Bain Restoration Committee ‌ but I also get involved in fundraising. I also serve on the Historic Cemeteries Committee, which oversees the Rocky Spring Burial Ground off Brief Road and the Cemetery at the Second Site adjacent to Queens Grant School. These cemeteries, owned by Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, were almost forgotten until a group of dedicated men, including my late husband, restored them. The earliest settlers of Mint Hill are buried here, so it is very important to preserve and maintain these hallowed sites.

When my children were students at Bain School, I helped develop a cultural arts program for the school using local talent and a low budget. I also coordinated the PTA's "Reflections" art show during that time.

Now, I enjoy and appreciate the work of the talented artists and teachers who are associated with Mint Hill Arts ‌ I am also excited that Mint Hill is home to Pottery 51, Spotlight Theater, the Black and White Theatre Company and other arts groups.

What motivated you to help with the historic Bain restoration efforts?

Bain (School) Academy has served the Mint Hill community continuously since its founding in 1889 by John Bain, who wanted to provide young people with the educational opportunities he never had while growing up on the family farm. The first graded school in Mecklenburg County, Bain Academy was also one of only two high schools that prepared students to attend any college in the state ‌ Restored and repurposed, it can become a permanent home for the arts, education, history and culture.

How would you like to see the Mint Hill community get more involved?

I would like to see more people support Mint Hill's arts groups and their activities. I would like to see more individuals and companies support our efforts to restore and repurpose Historic Bain. I am encouraged that so many individuals have contributed to the cause and a number of businesses have hosted fundraisers for Historic Bain.

Life is about love, laughter, and family.

State Sen. Bob Rucho to retire MATTHEWS – North Carolina Sen. Bob Rucho, 67, announced last week he will retire in 2016 and not seek re-election.

Rucho, a New England native, was first elected in 1996.

“My goal was to help win a conservative legislative majority and make bold changes to secure a better future for North Carolina families,” Rucho said in a news release. “I’m confident the state is better off now than when we started, and that a pathway to greater opportunity and prosperity for all North Carolinians is in place. I hope future legislative leaders show the political will to do the right thing and the discipline to stay the course.”

On trial: Providence High School presents ‘The Crucible’

Providence High School’s theater department will travel with audiences back to 1692 (or 11th-grade English class) – a time when witchcraft ran rampant in New England.

Providence will present Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” from Thursday, Nov. 12, to Sunday, Nov. 15 at the school.

The play dramatizes the Salem Witch Trails and revolves around accusations of witchcraft after teenage girls are discovered conjuring spirits.

“When I decided last year, I said, ‘I want to do a show that high-schoolers are either working (with) in their English classes and that they’re familiar with, so that they don’t have to read it from a book, but they can see it visually live,’” said Richard Turski, Providence fine arts teacher and play director. “I’m a visual person ... so when I can see the play live and then go back to the text and start thinking again. I think it will be good for the juniors to read it and see it on stage.”

When performing a comedy, students rely on laughter to gauge feedback from the audience; “The Crucible” takes on a much more somber plot, making it hard for students to determine their audience’s reception.

“Another challenge is people already have something in their minds about how they’re going to see it, how it’s going to look or how they imagine it, so when it comes from the director’s mind and what I see or how the student portrays them,” Turski, who is in his third year, said.

Turski found inspiration from the 1996 movie of the same name, featuring Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder, and took elements from the movie to Providence’s stage, but he

also wanted the students to evolve their characters through historical research.

The director said it’s important to allow the show to be student-driven because the production is a learning experience – to learn how to run a show and work cohesively.

Junior Camille Spencer, who plays the mischievous Abigail Williams, said the theater team has built a community and helps her engage in her passion.

Camille said she had to find “her inner mean” to develop her character and use physical characterization to create her character’s role.

Senior Rachel Kowadlo, who plays Elizabeth Proctor, said she prepared for her role through analyzing the script and discerning the motivation behind characters’ actions, including Elizabeth and others.

Rachel said being a part of “The Crucible” and taking on a more serious role has been a challenge, as she’s more comfortable performing comedies.

“In a dramatic role, you can’t tell if you’re reaching people like in a comedy when you hear laughter,” she aid.

Junior Parker Claus plays the iconic role of John Proctor, who Parker said he could relate to “in direct and abstract ways” through connecting how his emotions to what he believes John would have felt.

“I forget that I’m Parker and I become Proctor,” he said.

Parker expects audience members to connect with the characters’ emotions and look beyond the surface of the character. He hopes audiences see that John is a complicated character who comes from a point of strength and honesty.

Rachel encourages the audience to embrace the time warp and feel the intensity of the production, which is recommended for children 12 years old and older.

The director believes the production is relatable to today’s

society.

“I think the same themes that we see in this show happen today. Maybe not as witches and being on trial like that, but the circumstances that people are sometimes put into, the confrontations that we have and the interactions that we have with other people,” Turksi said. “I hope that people walk away seeing that this can apply today, even though it was more than 300 years ago.”

“The Crucible” is slated for 6:30 p.m. each night from Nov. 12 to 14 and 3 p.m. on Nov. 15 at 1800 Pineville-Matthews Road. Tickets cost $8 at the door. The show is not recommended for children younger than 12 years old.

Area schools earn Jimmie Johnson Foundation grants

Crown Point Elementary School and Independence High School were two of 10 schools selected by the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, along with Lowe’s Toolbox for Education, to receive grants for their schools.

The Champion Grants totaled $550,000 and are awarded annually to K-12 public and charter schools in and around the hometowns of NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson and his wife Chandra.

Crown Point was awarded $49,468 to provide each classroom with reading inventory to support learning and engagement.

Crown Point Assistant Principal Karen Falls, who is in her second year at the school, wrote the grant after coming from working in Title I schools, where they have funds to supply classroom libraries.

“When I got here, I was just very worried about the state of classroom libraries,” Falls said.

Falls said she was concerned the classroom libraries didn’t contain current books, leaving teachers to potentially purchase books to expand their libraries.

Each Crown Point classroom will receive 300 new fiction and non-fiction books with 100 books as part of a multicultural series.

Principal Mark Anderson said he’s grateful to receive the grant, especially as schools continue to lose funding for materials.

The school also will conduct assessments of reading and interest in reading once the librar-

ies are completed, Falls said, which ties in with Superintendent Ann Clark’s North Star initiative to improve students’ literacy skills.

Independence earned $62,807 for the school’s Academy of Engineering to purchase multiple tools students needed, such as graphic calculators, multi-meters, secure storage for the academy’s VEX Robotics, Mac stations, iPads, a wide-format printer, marketing easel and room dividers, among other items.

Patricia McTigue, the academy’s director, said when she and her team wrote the grant, she thought about what the students practically needed.

The director said what the grant will provide might “not necessarily be the tools in the toolbox, but it’s what the kids need.”

“We really are very focused on making sure our students have cutting-edge technology, as well as the ability to complete their work in the classroom,” she added.

She explained for students who are disadvantaged, the gap in supplies becomes “exponential,” but with the grant, the tools student receive will be used outside engineering classes.

The academy, which is in its second year, seeks to ensure its students graduate on time, collegeand career-ready, McTigue said.

McTigue believes the academy provides “an extra layer of support” for students, particularly disadvantaged students.

“When I got the phone call (about the grant), I cried cause I’m in the classroom every day and I see how passionate they are,” the director said.

“Even those that tend to fall through the cracks, they get it ... they’ve become engaged.”

Life has a purpose

“Chariots of Fire” is one of my favorite movies, not only because of the haunting music, but because the movie brilliantly weaves together three great interests of mine: athletics, Scotland and faith. The story revolves around two great athletes: Englishman Harold Abrams and Scotsman Eric Liddell.

In the movie, Abrams runs in the final of the 100 meters at the 1924 Olympics. He is a man of great drive, a man of great discipline and a man of great ability. He is addicted to running, and to winning. An hour before the final he says, “I have 10 lonely seconds to justify my whole existence. I have known the fear of losing, but now I’m almost too frightened to win.” Abrams does win the final, but walks away in loneliness and emptiness. There is obviously something missing in his life. But how can someone feel so empty at the same moment as he is achieving his dream?

The Scotsman, Eric Liddell, is a man of deep faith. He said, “God made me for a purpose, and God made me fast, and when I run I feel His pleasure.” Here is a man at peace with himself, but more importantly, at peace with God. In his heart, he knows the reason for his existence on earth. As a Scotsman, he would have learned the old Catechism: “Man’s chief end is

to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” So fulfillment in life is not found in pleasing ourselves (that ultimately will lead to emptiness) but in pleasing God. That gives purpose and meaning to life.

Do you have a purpose for living? Is your life meaningful or meaningless? Richard Dawkins, an Oxford Professor of Science, believes that we are nothing but “jumped up apes.” He thinks that there is no purpose to life, and to ask about the purpose of life is silly. But surely to ask what life is all about is a meaningful question which people throughout history have always been asking.

The Bible begins by saying that we are created in the image of God. God did not make us to live randomly or meaninglessly, but for a purpose. King David wrote: “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” (Psalm 139:17). God made us for a purpose. Our search for meaning is realized in a personal relationship with the living God who created us and in love sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to forgive us and to guide us throughout life.

So how do you look on life? Surely, you are not the product of purposeless forces, like a piece of flotsam thrown up on the beach of time with no meaning. If you are created by a loving God, meaning is found in knowing, loving and obeying this great God.

The regular season has drawn to a close, and conference champions have been crowned. Butler (9-2, 5-1 Southwestern 4A) beat rival Independence 31-0 on Nov. 6 to secure the league while Charlotte Catholic once again ran rampant in the So. Meck 8, finishing 10-0 and 7-0 in the conference.
