Making up news can be taxing The collection of news items that follow actually happened in an alternate reality much different from our own, but explaining inter-dimensional travel can be a bit tedious for a newspaper column.Let’s just chalk this up to being an April Fools column inspired by recent events.

Drive ban begins April 30

SOUTHPARK – Days after the Urban Land Institute deemed the SouthPark area lacking in pedestrian, bicycle and road connections, Charlotte declared a ban of all vehicular traffic, effective April 30.

Roads within a five-mile radius of SouthPark Mall will be restriped into much smaller bike lanes, while abandoned cars alongside streets will be used for affordable and workforce housing.

Residents in neighboring towns are begging the city to reconsider, even encouraging state lawmakers to intervene with an emergency session to overturn the ban.

“We want to see how this plays out,” said a Raleigh lawmaker wearing a “Charlotte sucks” pin on his lapel.

Richard Lee Mullis, 80 years of age, of Stanfield, passed away Monday, March 28, 2016 at his residence in Stanfield.

Richard was born September 28, 1935 in Mecklenburg County to the late Reuben James Mullis and the late Eunice Bartlett Mullis.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Efird Mullis of Stanfield; son, David Allen (Amy) Mullis of Locust; sisters, Betty Flow, Jean (Jim) Barbee; brothers, James (Jenny) Mullis, Johnny (Darlene) Mullis; four grandchildren, Ryan Mullis, Talor Smith, Anna Mullis, and Molly Mullis; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Reagan Mullis.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, My name is Dean Demmery, and so far I have single-handedly taken on trying to clean up the Windsor Park Greenway that runs from Highway 51 along Northeast Parkway to Windsor Park in Matthews. The park is beautiful and has recently added several nice kiddy attractions for them to play on. The greenway leaves the park to the east along a nice running brook and natural foliage and runs below the parking lots of Costco, Old Navy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Bed, Bath & Beyond, just to name a few.

Here’s the problem: the view along the walk is marred by trash, and more than 30 shopping baskets that have been thrown into the woods and stream running along the greenway trail. In just a week, I’ve filled more than 12 trash bags of litter that has been thoughtlessly tossed into the surrounding woods and stream bed. I’m a former ma(see Letters on page 6)

‘Bike to DC’ fundraiser April 9 to support Mint Hill police

Local churches participate in annual Walk with the Cross

MINT HILL – Residents are invited to attend a fundraising dinner at Big Guy’s Pizza on April 9 to raise money to help a Mint Hill police officer bike to Washington, D.C. A representative from Mint Hill Police Department will join other law enforcement this spring in a 500-mile, four-day “Bike to DC” bicycle ride from Charlotte to Washington, D.C. in time for the annual candlelight vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Big Guy’s Pizza, located at 6914 MatthewsMint Hill Road, will donate a portion of all sales from 5 to 8 p.m. to the effort. Raffle prizes will be available, and tickets cost $2 or three for $5.

MINT HILL – Several churches from the Mint Hill area participated in the annual Walk with the Cross on Friday, March 25, as part of Holy Week services. The event, hosted by Mint Hill Baptist Church, allowed participants to help carry a cross from the church to the intersection of Matthews-Mint Hill and Lawyers roads.

Dean Demmery Dear Editor, I want to thank you for your article regarding the (Fullwood Station) development. I live on Glenshannon Road and vehemently protested this development. Kudos to John Ross, the only one who obviously gave this any real thought instead of only seeing the potential greenbacks. Shame on the town of Matthews. This is an albatross we all are stuck with now, far from improving and upgrading. I would encourage all of these decision makers to enter Country Place and try to exit back onto South Trade from approximately 4:15 p.m. until around 7 p.m. It’s total gridlock and these homes are not even built. The widening of South Trade will do nothing to relieve this already horrendous traffic mess.

Instead of a nice, peaceful backyard, I now have constant construction with noise starting at 7:30 a.m., the view of a crater dust bowl and lights at night that light up my entire yard, and the lovely view of the endless traffic – not to mention the filth on my house and car. Matthews supposedly is a habitat for animals – yeah, right. Where are all the deer and other wildlife who lived in that wooded area?

As for my family and me, we are saying goodbye to Matthews. My two sons have already moved, and I will follow suit as soon as I can sell my home, which will now take a huge financial hit due to the development debacle.

Car washes benefit charities CHARLOTTE – Autobell Car Wash’s Charity Car Wash Program helped raise $634,398 last year for charities, schools, and other nonprofits in the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia.

Autobell provides nonprofits with car wash tickets custom-printed with the organization's name. Fundraisers keep half the proceeds from ticket sales.

The program has helped nonprofits raise more than $7.6 million since 1998.

“It eliminates the need for organizers to plan and execute a parking lot car wash or other large-scale fundraiser, worry about rain dates, or incur any upfront cost,” Autobell CEO Chuck Howard said.

Annexation could lead to housing MATTHEWS – Charlotte City Council recently extended its corporate limits to include nearly 15 acres off Tilley Morris Road for a proposed development that would add 35 single-family homes.

City staff wanted the annexation to ensure the streets in the development were designed and built to Charlotte standards.

Old wives’ (and husbands’) tales Misconceptions in N.C. family law

There are many misconceptions regarding the laws of any state. Here are some of the most common myths related to family law in North Carolina: I want a legal separation: Legal separations are not documents in N.C. An individual is “legally separated” when one spouse moves from the marital residence and at least one spouse intends to remain separate and apart indefinitely.

I want to file for separation: Spouses may enter into a Separation Agreement to resolve all issues arising out of the parties’ separation, but that document is not “filed” anywhere.

We are separated since we live in separate rooms: In N.C., a couple is separated only when they are living in separate residences with the intent to remain separate and apart indefinitely.

I will take her/him for everything (s)he has: Sorry, but alimony is based on disposable income of the supporting spouse after accounting for their reasonable needs and expenses in keeping with the standard of living enjoyed by the parties prior to the separation. With respect to marital property, most spouses only get onehalf of the net value of the marital estate.

At 12, my child can decide where (s)he wants to live: A minor child cannot decide

with which parent (s)he will live. However, in some situations, an articulate child of suitable age and maturity may tell the judge some facts which can assist the court in making a custody determination.

(S)he’s not paying child support, so I do not have to let her/him see the child(ren): Child support and visitation are not related in this context. You cannot withhold visitation simply because you are not receiving child support. Likewise, not receiving visitation does not excuse you from paying child support.

My spouse is committing adultery, so I will get custody automatically: Being a lousy spouse does not mean that one is a lousy parent.

Adultery is not a determinative factor in a custody trial, but certain facts can make it relevant regarding the best interests of the child(ren).

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is looking to place an $805 million bond on November’s ballot with about $266 million of the bond going to District 5 and 6 schools.

Superintendent Ann Clark opened up a work session with the CMS Board of Education on March 22 to discuss a prioritized list of 29 projects that district staff wishes to fund with a bond.

Clark said the projects on the bond were in response to the needs of the community with more than 80 percent of the district’s 10-year needs regarding maintaining current facilities and building new schools both to relieve overcrowding.

CMS, on average, receives about $200 million per year through capital allotments, whether from bonds or COPs, but board members are looking to press county commissioners for a higher price tag after what they say is years of neglecting the district’s capital needs.

‘A lack of progress’

During the March 22 meeting, Clark shared a video of Mark Elgart, AdvancED CEO, who led a review of CMS’s accreditation, discussing the need for CMS to address its capital needs.

He asserted the district has been aware of its long-range capital needs for the past 15 years, but hasn’t addressed them. The lack of progress now impedes children’s education and health due to a lack of proper facilities.

At-large member Elyse Dashew attested to that notion, describing children sitting on lab tables rather than desks in schools with overcrowding.

Elgart pushed to “accelerate” the timeline for capital needs and start narrowing the gap between high-need and low-need schools, as well as expanding choices for families.

“I think you see schools in dire need of replacement and you need to heed the creation of seats based on the realities of today,” Clark said. “…I think what we need to do is to open up families to getting what they need – whether it’s closer to home or on a longer bus ride.”

Clark believes the projects on the capital bond look to address the needs the community has, as well as what the community has asked for.

The top priority projects look to provide relief to overcrowded schools through new facilities or additional classrooms.

Clark said new facilities could potentially “put a dent” in the number of mobile classrooms in Mecklenburg County, which not only have caused overcrowding issues, but facility issues. District 5 member Eric Davis

pointed to the consequences of mobile classrooms during the most recent winter storm, which caused CMS to keep its doors closed because there was ice on the ramps leading to mobile classrooms.

Side-by-side student assignment

District 6 member Paul Bailey believes the capital bond and the new student assignment plan need to “mesh” or the bond might not pass on the ballot.

He said his constituents are pushing for CMS to declare the retention of neighborhood schools, but might not see the capital plan, which predominantly seeks to facilitate projects in District 2, as means to keep their home schools.

“Asking for bond funding without having some direction with student assignment, you’re just going to have disconnect,” Bailey said. “People are imagining the worst.”

Clark said she believes the capital bond projects could help carry out the student assignment plan better because it seeks to provide expanded school choices – one of the plan’s goals.

“I think it addresses the needs that we have, even if we weren’t doing student assignment,” Clark said. “I think we would want to continue to increase the options families have and make sure they’re geographically distributed.”

Projects in the south

Parents from the southern part of the district are wondering what the bond package could mean for Districts 5 and 6.

Of the 29 projects, approximately four will be in District 5, two in District 6 and one for both District 5 and 6. Projects include Collinswood Language Academy moving to the Smith Family Center; a new high school in south Charlotte to alleviate overcrowding at Ardrey Kell and South Mecklenburg high schools; a new elementary school to alleviate overcrowding at Bain and Lebanon Road elementary schools; a new facility for Montclaire Elementary; additional classrooms at Sharon Elementary and Community House Middle schools; and renovations at South Meck, among others.

Clark said no land has been pinned down for new facilities, but she wanted to start selling off surplus property last fall to make room for new land choices, so if the bond passed, the district could move into the design phase quicker.

CMS will host a public hearing on Tuesday, April 5, at 6 p.m. at Vance High School to allow public input of the 2016 capital needs assessment. The board plans to vote on the bond at its April 12 meeting.

Schools accepting kindergarten registration for 2016-17 Area schools are currently accepting kindergarten registration for the 2016-17 school year.

North Carolina law states students must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 to be considered for kindergarten, and students applying for Montessori schools Pre-K program must be 4 years old on or before Aug. 31.

New students must provide a proof of Mecklenburg County residency; current immunization records; a health assessment; and a birth certificate or other proof of age and legal name. Required immunizations include: five doses of DTaP/ DT vaccine; four doses of Polio IPV vaccine; two doses MMR; three doses Hepatitis B vaccine; HIB shot and two doses of Varicella (Chicken Pox).

Area schools also will host Beginners’ Days, in which kindergarten teachers and staff members provide parents with expectation for kindergarten and ways to set routines for children, including reading tips each day, practicing cleanup routines

at home with their toys and setting a standard bedtime. Parents will learn about the requirements for kindergarten, such as immunizations and physicals needed before kindergarten entry.

There will also be an opportunity to learn about the After School Enrichment Program, and how and when to register.

Daniel definitely wasn’t Italian

I grew up with two versions of the “four food groups.” The one taught in schools included: bread, potatoes, rice; fruits and vegetables; meat, fish, eggs; and milk and dairy.

My four food groups were different.

Being Italian, my grandmother taught us her version of the “four food groups.” They consisted of meatballs, sausage, cheese and lasagna. Notice, it included meat, cheese, and pasta.

You can imagine my dismay when a coworker challenged me to try the Daniel fast for the Christian season of Lent. It is taken from the Biblical story when Daniel refuses to eat the King’s food. The King allows him to eat his food while his subjects eat the King’s food. When it is obvious that Daniel is in better shape than the King’s people, everyone eats this healthy diet.

A year ago, I gave up artificially sweetened beverages for Lent. It was harder than I thought, because I drank a lot of it. For the first three weeks, I was like an alcoholic going through detox. I drank water and missed my sweetened beverage. After a few weeks, I no longer missed it. When Lent was over, I continued drinking water, and still do to this day.

The Daniel fast asked me to give up everything that was Italian. There was no sausage, no

meatballs and no cheese. I found myself going back to my childhood eating what my family called, “Depression Era” meals (my parents grew up in the Depression). Not wanting to deprive my wife of this “fast,” I convinced Rev. Tony Marciano her to join me.

What did we eat? Lentils and salad – more lentils than I want to admit.

By day five, I missed chicken. My wife missed cheese. We did a 10-day Daniel diet, and were proud we achieved that. We decided to do the Daniel diet Monday to Friday, and “cheat” on the weekend. I found that when I ate meat and cheese on the weekend, it wasn’t as satisfying as the anticipation of eating it.

There were other things I gave up for Lent, but they weren’t cake and cookies as I did when I was a kid.

Instead, I gave up living in the past. I stopped scratching old wounds and hurts. I don’t wonder what I could have done differently if I had the chance to do it all over again. It’s in the past and I can’t change that.

I gave up playing the victim. I realize when bad things happened to me, God didn’t say,

I worked on being grateful. It’s hard to be negative when you are thanking God for waking you up and giving you another chance at life.

I worked on my procrastination. I took on home repair projects I’ve avoided for years.

When I tackled them, they weren’t as difficult as I was afraid they would be.

I took on smiling more. I knew that my mood – good or bad – affects the people I lead.

I learned to reconnect with one of my passion, including great music. I heard a band with brass instruments. It resonated deeply within me.

Whether we are in the church season of Lent, we should strive to become better people. Give up those destructive habits that keep us from becoming all that God would have us to be, while taking on those things that make us a better person.

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Covenant Day baseball makes strides on diamond

Covenant Day’s baseball team is coming off its first losing season (4-19) since 2010, which was David Houseton’s first year as head coach. But this year, he’s proving that was merely a hiccup.

If the Lions (7-7) manage to finish above .500, it will be Covenant Day’s fifth winning season under Houseton’s watch.

He comes from a culture of success at Charlotte Christian, where he played, then served as an assistant coach for eight years before he took the helm at Covenant Day. Houseton’s experience with the Knights has given him a good measuring stick as he seeks to build the Lions into a perennial power.

It will take time for him to do that, but Covenant Day, which was the youngest team in the state a year ago, is trending in the right direction.

The Lions upended one of the area’s top teams when they knocked off Charlotte Catholic, 2-1, on March 3.

They picked up another benchmark victory when they beat Franklin (Tenn.) Centennial, 6-5, in the East Hickman Tournament in Dickson, Tennessee March 24.

“That (win over Catholic) definitely showed the team and the program that we can play with anybody when we’re having a good day,” Houseton said. “After our spring break trip to Tennessee we found our offense, so we’re really trying to put it together. I’m absolutely pleased. We’re still youthful in a lot of places, but we have good team unity and we have a lot of bright spots as far as talent on the team this year.

“We’re very capable of playing with anybody. It’s just about these boys playing a complete game and having their heads screwed on straight. It’s a matter of focus and execut-

ing what we do well. When we do that along with a great pitching performance we’re in a lot of ballgames.”

Houseton and his staff have a strong pool of talent at their disposal, but they’re young, so it’ll take some time to cultivate them into an experienced team.

One of Covenant Day’s greatest strengths is on the mound with a strong trio of pitchers – senior Chris Cotton (Washington and Lee commit), junior Eli Ellington and junior Heath McKay. Sophomore Caleb Embry also has proven himself as a competitor, and gives the Lions another dependable arm to battle batters.

“In the CISAA, if you don’t have three starters, you won’t get through a three-game series,” Houseton said. “Since I’ve been at Covenant Day, I’ve always geared our program to have three quality guys that we can start, mainly just so we can be ready for conference play.”

Possibly the biggest difference maker for the Lions comes behind the plate in sophomore catcher Elijah Hunt.

McKay plays third base when he’s not pitching, but his understudy, freshman John Adelman, fills in admirably when he’s on the mound. Cotton also plays shortstop, but junior Mitchell Cope, who hits leadoff and sees action at second base and short, has been stellar thus far.

Sophomore outfielder Jahmai Sylvestre is another rising contributor, who has put his talents on display. He had his coming out party when he hit 11-12 at the East Hickman Tournament last week.

“He was unconscious in Tennessee,” Houseton said. “He’s competing. Some of the mistakes we make, I got to live with just being youthful. Not many varsity baseball teams have sophomores in key positions.”

Ellington said his teammates are doing their job and working hard.

The work began last summer with guys getting in the weight room. In the fall, players came in for workouts by themselves. The hard work is paying off, and is showing steady improvement on the field.

Cotton said the team’s camaraderie has grown.

“We’ve grown really tight,” Cotton said. “We’ve gotten a lot better talent-wise, a lot stronger. We could only improve from last year.”

The challenge for Houseton and his staff is cleaning up Covenant Day’s defense and getting it to quit giving the opposition extra outs.

“Our young outfield, if those guys are doing what they need to be doing that gives us a fighting chance,” Houseton said. “I think we’re going to finish strong this year, and I think next year will really be a good year for us.”

For this young team to be successful, it can’t afford to think about failure, but must play with confidence. It will be competitive if it does that.

Justin Hardin will become the next defensive coordinator at Charlotte Latin, leaving his post as Independence’s head coach after one season. Former Latin defensive coordinator Mike Hawks left the Hawks to coach Carolina Pride.

Justin Hardin Hardin returns to Latin after serving as the Hawks wide receivers coach from 2007 to 2009. Latin won the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state championship and finished with a 13-0 record in Hardin’s first season.

“Justin and I have had a real strong relationship for a long time,” said Latin coach Larry McNulty. “He coached with me for a while, and we stayed in contact wherever he went. We talked quite often. I had called four or five college programs trying to see if there was an assistant that wanted to get into high school coaching, and I wasn’t making much headway.

“I decided to call Justin and say, ‘Hey, do you know anybody that would be good, that would fill what I’m looking for, and somebody you’d recommend?’ and he said, ‘Well, I’d be really interested.’ I jumped at that situation.”

McNulty said Hardin has not been hired to be the coach-in-waiting, but will be a strong candidate for the head job once he retires.

Hardin, who played quarterback at the Citadel, led the Patriots to an 8-5 (5-1) record and a second round appearance in the state playoffs in one season at Independence.

“It ended up being a tough decision,” Hardin said. “The Independence family has been great to me. I enjoyed this past year. It’s hard to believe it’s been one year already. When it came down to it, it was an opportunity, but it also was a family decision for me. I’m looking forward to the future.

“As far as a person and as a coach I really put a lot into building relationships with kids, but also sometimes you have to step back and make decisions for yourself. That’s tough sometimes and it’s hard, but you have coaching goals and personal and family goals. That’s one of the reasons I’ve made this decision.”

Hardin joins Latin after the Hawks reached the NCISAA Division I state championship and finished with an 8-4 (1-3 CISAA) record, so expectations are high. His return will only increase expectations, and provide the program with fresh energy.

But his departure leaves Independence in search of its third head coach in as many years.

An interview request to Independence athletics director Kelly Lewis was not returned in time for this story. The Patriots lost their defensive coordinator Michael Hertz, who left to become the next head coach at Porter Ridge in January.

Rocky River junior wing Ariana Nance rebounded nicely from a torn ACL she sustained in the Ravens playoff loss last season. Nance, who eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier for her career, averaged 14.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.2 apg and 2.6 spg to make the all-conference team.

Covenant Day junior forward Sarah Billiard, a Virginia volleyball commit, was dominant on both ends of the court with averages of 16 ppg, 14 rpg and four bpg this season.

Billiard eclipsed the 1,000point and 1,000-rebound barriers for her career to earn team MVP and allconference honors for the third straight season. She also made the all-state team.

VanDusen, a senior forward, was arguably the most versatile player in the area in her final campaign with the Lions.

VanDusen, who saw time at all five positions this season, averaged 13 ppg, seven rpg, three apg and two spg to earn allconference honors. Wheaton College is recruiting her.

Butler sophomore point guard Rinnah Green improved by leaps and bounds in her second year on the varsity. She doubled her scoring output with an average of 14.2 ppg this season.

Green also averaged 3.7 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.8 spg and 1.4 bpg, making her a difficult matchup on both ends of the floor. She earned all-conference honors.

Butler senior combo guard Fairen Sutton was stellar in her final season with the Bulldogs. Sutton provided integral leadership for the team, and averaged 16.5 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.8 apg and 2.7 spg to make the all-conference team.
