CATS presents light rail options for Matthews

MATTHEWS – The Charlotte Area Transit System will consider input from a community meeting held Tuesday, April 5, at Matthews Town Hall to whittle four light rail options down to one by June.

CATS plans to present the LYNX Silver Line to the Metropolitan Transit Commission for approval to add the light rail project to long-range transportation plans. CATS will then be tasked with trying to secure funding and preserving future right of way.

The biggest difference among the four options is where they begin to diverge from Independence Boulevard. Three of the options involve the rail veering onto an expanded Monroe Road.

The footprint for Monroe Road would have to increase from 60 feet to upward of 140 to 175 feet to accommodate light rail. That raised eyebrows among some residents attending the public meeting.

One lady blurted “oh my” at the mention of the increase. Another resident asked transportation planner Jason Lawrence how CATS expected to pull that off. The short answer – redevelopment.

Lawrence reiterated during the pre-

sentation that they were creating a longrange plan for the corridor. He told residents not to consider costs, but think about what they’d want to see.

“It’s not intended to define a project that’s ready to go into engineering to be constructed, but we’ve got to start with an idea,” Lawrence said.

Mayor Jim Taylor encouraged residents to “ask for the moon.”

“Whatever you think is going to be good for the town of Matthews and good for our community, ask for that to be included,” Taylor said. “Ask for the Bugatti or Mercedes and then we can always scale back.”

Lawrence said each of the options scores about the same and whatever is chosen will likely be along the same costs as the LYNX Blue Line project.

“Really what it comes down to is how does it fit with the overall vision of what we want the community to be,” Lawrence said.

Matthews resident Stephen Gasparro was drawn to an option that involves widening Monroe Road. Gasparro would like to eat dinner out in downtown Matthews and then hop on the Silver Line to ride to Bojangles’ Coliseum, where he has season tickets to watch the Charlotte Checkers hockey team.

“I think more people would come into Matthews without having to drive,

because the traffic is pretty bad,” Gasparro said, noting light rail would provide an economic benefit to downtown businesses.

Much of the work that’s gone into the study so far has been based on such community feedback.

CATS realized residents favor more reliable travel times, showing the need for exclusive right of way for a light rail system. Residents also identified several destinations through public meetings, such as Bojangles’ Coliseum, Ovens Auditorium, two Novant hospitals and two downtowns, where they would like to see light rail stops.

Two options geared more for Independence Boulevard involve using Independence Pointe Parkway as an alternate route to create a closer connection to downtown Matthews and the hospital.

Taylor said Matthews leaders have been vocal about transit options extending into Union County. He’d like to see light rail go through Stallings and Indian Trail into Monroe to eliminate some traffic congestion.

Lawrence has acknowledged the need to consider extending the Silver Line to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Extensions to Union County and the airport will warrant more study.

How much is enough? Nonprofit helps families manage screen time

MATTHEWS – Technology is everywhere, and it’s an integral part of daily life – especially for young people.

Many school systems continue to push for more technology as a source of innovation, but does increasing technology mean increasing test scores?

Moms in the Matthews area were wondering how much screen time is too much, and founded Families Managing Media, a nonprofit, as a result. Recently, they’ve enlisted the voice of a Delaney Ruston, a filmmaker, doctor and mother of two, to share her documentary, “Screenagers: Growing Up In the Digital Age” and provide insight on the advantages – and disadvantages – of growing up in a technological world.

“Screenagers” looks at how parents can navigate the digital world, and the effects of screen technology on young people.

Families Managing Media Executive Director Melanie Hempe, a mother of four, struggled with gaming overuse in her home and was looking to manage her children’s screen time and use of smartphones.

“I started talking to other families and they were also struggling with this,” Hempe said.

Hempe, a nurse, began inviting physicians, neuroscientists, neurosurgeons and other experts to discuss the consequences of extended technology use and the “red flags” parents can identify.

Families Managing Media hosts monthly meetings and workshops to discuss parents setting boundaries for their child’s technology use, and the consequences of too much screen time.

“We all know we’re in a challenging time in raising our youngsters with the multiplicity of screens that are invading their lives,” said Covenant Day Head of School Mark Davis. “We can learn what we’re up against and what we can do.”

This month, the nonprofit hosted two screenings of Ruston’s “Screenagers,” and invited educators and stakeholders to host individual screenings of the documentary in their respective communities.

“Screenagers” dives into how Ruston’s family manages technology use and explores how other communities manage living in a digital world.

In the film, neuroscientists and technology experts discuss the negative consequences of extensive technology use, such as increased concern about physical appearance, less social interaction and decreased sensitivity and empathy. Studies showed students that are provided technology at home through their school actually perform worse on tests, because they’re spending most of their “homework time” surfing social media sites rather than learning. On average, boys play about 11.3 hours of video games a week, while about only 16 minutes daily of their screen time actually involves homework.

“Kids mimic what they see on the screen – good or bad,” said one of the documentary’s experts.

Experts also discussed the reasoning behind what attracts young people to social media and

video games, and how adolescents can become “addicted” to their devices, as well as solutions for parents to help create balance for their children.

“There’s that portable nature of technology now,” said Ellen Cotton, who is part of Families Managing Media. “Technology used to be intentional; now, we can’t get away.”

The documentary discussed the extreme consequences that excessive screen time can cause, describing a gamer who failed out of college because he insisted on playing video games instead of going to class. He ended up at the reSTART Life Internet Rehabilitation Facility.

Matt Scully, a Providence Day School teacher who attended a showing of “Screenagers,” said he hopes parents that view the documentary see beyond the extreme cases in the film. He also hoped parents of young children would see the film before giving their children smart phones and tablets.

“You don’t want to create rules after children create patterns,” Scully said.

Hempe hopes the documentary will incite conversations in the community, as well as with parents and their children.

“I want the community to understand the need for education for parents about how to navigate the digital world,” Hempe said. “Technology crosses schools and daily lives that presents issues we can’t keep our head in the sand anymore.”

Hempe said she finds parents sometimes can be shocked that they have the authority to set boundaries for their children’s technology use, but Families Managing Media provides practical solutions and suggestions to do just that.

“Just because it’s available doesn’t mean they need it,” Hempe said. “Having the Internet in your pocket is not good for kids and parents are often in the dark about where their kids are going (on the Internet).”

Hempe, and members of the Families Managing Media, welcome community groups and schools to host screenings of “Screenagers” at their facilities; however, screenings come with a cost, which are often afforded through ticket sales.

Hempe also will host question-and-answer sessions for community groups, as needed, which provide tactical questions and practical solutions for parents.

Sportsplex prompts equity debate with commissioners

CHARLOTTE – George Dunlap continues to criticize the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex in Matthews in his efforts to expedite completion of Eastway Park in Charlotte.

Dunlap, who represents northeast Charlotte on the county commission, doesn’t think it’s fair the Sportsplex was completed in two phases, as Eastway Park remains incomplete.

The county approved a master plan for Eastway Park in 2003 and completed the first phase of construction in 2007, according to Parks and Recreation Director Jim Garges.

Garges explained to commissioners last month that larger regional parks with master plans, such as Eastway, are broken into two or three phases and completed over time. As many as 22 parks are waiting on second and third phases, he said.

As for the Sportsplex, the county had to break that project into two phases due to the recession.

“Go down to Mint Hill and talk to them about Ezell Farms,” Garges told commissioners March 16. “And we went down when there wasn’t money in the bond issue to get that park started. It’s important I think for all of us to understand there are a lot of needs because we got 500-plus square miles we’re trying to deal with.”

The county uses bond referendums to fund parks and recreation projects, placing a priority on spreading them throughout Mecklenburg to ensure more buy-in. Dunlap prefers priority be given to older neighborhoods in Charlotte.

Right now, the county is focused on completing projects paid for through 2008 bonds.

County Manager Dena Diorio said commissioners will start a new process next year to identify park projects beyond 2018.

Town explores uses for historic site

County gives Levine Senior Center a financial boost CHARLOTTE – Mecklenburg commissioners agreed to give $70,000 last month to the Levine Senior Center after the agency demonstrated financial improvement.

Michael Bryant, finance director for Mecklenburg County, said county commissioners placed the money in a restricted contingency fund in June 2015 after a 2014 audit showed negative cash flow for two years.

The board wanted the agency to have discussions with the town of Matthews and Leon Levine Foundation, as well as develop a longterm, sustainable business model before giving it money.

Since then, the town of Matthews bought Levine Senior Center’s property for $732,000, the remaining balance of the mortgage and the Leon Levine Foundation awarded the agency a $65,000 grant for facility maintenance. The agency also increased its cash on hand through donations and grants.

With monthly payments and repairs accounted for, the agency can focus on operating the facility.

“I did want to say how grateful I am that the town of Matthews stepped forward to make that purchase,” Chairman Trevor Fuller said.

“That’s an important facility for our seniors. I’m

MATTHEWS – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission is partnering with the town of Matthews to explore options for the Phillips House and property.

They agreed to pay $12,500 to the Adams Group for design work. The Charlotte-based firm will review the property, conduct interviews with stakeholders, lead a community workshop and offer recommendations of how the property should be used.

“It’s important to note that this property is adjacent to the Reid House – almost a full block is available to think about what type of use would best serve the community now and into the future,” Town Manager Hazen Blodgett wrote in a memo to town commissioners.

The home belonged to the Pete Phillips, who served as town postmaster from 1933 to 1953 as well as on the town and school boards, according to the CMHLC’s website.

The house dates back to 1925.

Salons help Safe Alliance MATTHEWS – Suite Nectar Salons will host a Mini Makeover Day to benefit Safe Alliance, a nonprofit that helps victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence in Mecklenburg County.

Forty percent of proceeds will go to the nonprofit. The salon will offer blowouts, facials, haircuts, massages, waxing and other serves.

Nectar operates in a suite concept, giving independent hairstylists a shared front desk and concierge service to allow them to focus on their work.

You’ve just contacted an attorney and scheduled a consultation for legal advice and possibly representation in a civil litigation matter. Here’s what to expect, how to prepare, and what to bring with you to get the most out of your consultation.

In general, an attorney will spend approximately an hour learning more about your case.

Much of the consultation will center on factfinding. You’ll need to provide all the pertinent details about your case, identifying when the issue arose and all the involved parties. Documentation will help paint a clear picture of the factual circumstances surrounding your potential case.

If you’re involved in a contractual dispute, bring the contract. Contracts have important provisions that may shape the approach by which your attorney will advise you. Some of these provisions alter the forum in which you are able to seek redress by designating which law applies or by making arbitration mandatory. In a dispute regarding a lease, bring the lease agreement. In a business dispute, bring your operating agreement or shareholder agreement. Other documents that evidence important terms and facts include purchase orders or invoices.

For a personal injury issue, bring your insurance company information, including communications you have already had with the insur-

ance company, medical bills, and photographs of any damages to your property or body.

If you’ve already tried to resolve this issue before contacting an attorney, bring any written communication you have had with the opposing party, including letters you have sent notifying the other party of the issue, emails attempting to resolve the issue, and documentation of the other party’s responses. Upon engaging an attorney to represent you, your attorney will likely use these communications in preparing your case or negotiating on your behalf.

Your attorney will discover what you desire out of representation, consider whether there is a conflict of interest in representing you against the potential opposing party, assess whether any applicable limitations period prevents you from bringing suit, and will want to be sure that (s)he will be able to adequately represent your best interests. Carmel Christian names Long new Head of School

MATTHEWS – About nine months after Head of School J. Van Wade resigned from Carmel Christian School, the private Christian school announced new leadership.

Michael Long will serve as Carmel Christian head of school beginning June 6, coming to the school from Fellowship Christian School in Roswell, Georgia, where he served as the upper school head.

“Our program at Carmel Christian uniquely focuses on character and equipping our students with Christ-like values so that they can carry out into our world,” said Carmel Baptist Church Executive Pastor Jay Hancock. “Long shares that vision.”

Carmel Christian is a ministry of Carmel Baptist and the church is integral to school’s decisionmaking. The Carmel Christian School Board is a standing committee of the church, comprised of 12 members, who ensure its mission is carried out through the school.

Hancock told Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly last fall the school board developed a search committee, which included Hancock, school board members and school personnel to enlist the services of Coleman-Lew, a Charlotte-based executive search firm, to carry out the search process.

“God has clearly shown us during this search His hand directing us to Mike. In the short time we have known him, we have seen how God has gifted him as an effective communicator, a vi-

sionary, a teacher and an encourager of others. He has a passion for Christian education and his excitement for what Carmel Christian has to offer is contagious,” said school board chairperson Jeanette Bicket, Long, a lifelong Mike Long North Carolinian, is an University of North Carolina graduate with two bachelor’s degrees in political science and history. He also holds a master’s degree in Christian school administration from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has certifications in AP U.S. History teaching and as an Association of Christian Schools (ACSI) administrator.

After graduating from Chapel Hill, Long taught seventh- and eighth-graders in Durham Public Schools, where he often taught children from challenging circumstances. Long said he found many students shared concerns about peer pressure to use drugs and alcohol and to have sex.

While AIDs education was on the rise in the 1980s, Long applied for a grant from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human resources for an “abstinence-only until marriage” tactic to sex education as a response to his students’ pressures.

He developed a video series – rather than a curriculum – in hopes of reaching the MTV

generation.

Long is credited as a “pioneer” of the abstinence education movement throughout the country, training more than 60,000 educators in “directive teaching,” a teaching strategy that helps teachers related to teenagers.

After the development of his video series, Long traveled the country for more than 20 years discussing abstinence education with community groups, schools and children and training teachers the curriculum. Today, the curriculum is used in more than 5,000 school systems and youth organizations worldwide.

About seven years ago, the federal government eliminated sex education funding and Long lost multiple speaking opportunities, so he began looking for a new option.

He went to his pastor, who encouraged him to pursue a career as a leader in a Christian school.

“He told me, ‘You’ve done everything there is to do in education. Why don’t you ring out all that sponge of knowledge in one ministry called a Christian school?’” Long said.

Hancock said Long’s experience as an educator, speaker and curriculum writer attracted the search committee to select him as Carmel’s newest leader.

“When we looked at his past, it’s not so much what he was training about, but the training and skills he’s developed,” he said. “…we were looking at the skills he learned in his (speaking) career and how those are playing out in the extension of his career.”

Hancock hopes Long will be effective in man-

aging Carmel Christian’s growth, which will come with a new capital campaign intended to help build a new high school and student activities center. Carmel Christian had about 900 students this fall and wants to work toward a capacity of 1,000 students.

Long believes he’s ready for the challenge. The new head of school sees many parallels with Fellowship and Carmel, including developing student population growth, and wants to build from those experiences as he takes the helm in June.

“I look forward to leading the school through growth. There is such a need for a school like Carmel – particularly as south Charlotte continues to grow,” Long said.

Long wants Carmel to become a “distinctive Christian school,” which refers to all students developing Christian values, as well as bringing academic standards that “parallel to any other school in the community.”

“We want to teach our kids how to make a living, but we all want to teach them how they can make a life,” he added.

He hopes to develop the school’s academic standard – particularly in the high school – to compete with any school in the community.

“There are three things that we all do – equipping students to prepare for the world, leading our staff and faculty and partnering with parents in the discipleship in our children,” Hancock said. “We want to continue to do those things.”

Carmel Christian will host a welcome event for Long on April 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s worship center.

Education Briefs Butler to host ‘X Out’ event MATTHEWS – Butler High School’s D.R.E.A.M. Team will host an “X Out Your Cause” event on April 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise awareness for public health issues.

The team is inviting community groups to participate in a walking event, while raising awareness for health issues that affect adolescents, including teen driving, cancer, healthy eating and substance abuse.

Participants will bring a blank white Tshirt to decorate to represent their respective causes. The free event will feature photo booths, video submissions, healthy snacks and music, along with the walk.

The purpose of the event is to “unite as a county; educate, support and provide hope,” according to Janice Williams, director of Carolinas Center for Injury Prevention.

“We all face challenges, struggles and sadness,” Williams wrote in an email. “It’s not how many times you get hit – it’s how many times can you get hit and keep moving forward, turning each tough time into a lesson learned and a stronger you.”

Crestdale Middle looking for testing proctor volunteers MATTHEWS – Due to make up snow days, Crestdale Middle School’s testing calendar has been changed by the state, and the school is looking for proctors for those days.

Crestdale is looking for about 50 CMSapproved volunteers to serve as proctors for EOGs for May 26 and 27 and June 1 and 2. The school also will need five proctors for EOCs on June 6.

Master, Greyfriar students earn grants to host classics week

Matthews Elementary School to host beginners’ night April 21

MATTHEWS – The Classical Association of the Middle West and South Inc. provided grants for area Latin students from Master’s Academy and Greyfriar’s Classical Academy.

The association gave “Caristia” grants, averaging about $45, which will be used to support “Happy Birthday Rome” parties in April to celebrate the founding of Rome on April 21, 753 B.C., according to a news release.

“The Roman festival known as the Caristia took place on (Feb.. 22). This festival was a time for family members to reunite and renew their ties and it involved a potluck meal,” Sherri Madden, Latin teacher, said.

A Bridge Initiative grant of $500 also was awarded to Master’s Academy students for spreading the word about Classics in their community.

Master’s Aacdemy students used the funds to host an “Anti-Prometheus party” for area firefighters, a “Hercules” movie night for refugee children, Latin Christmas caroling and mosaic making at area libraries.

The association also provided a travel grant of $400 to Master’s Academy and Greyfriars Classical Tutorial students for a trip to Washington D.C. over spring break.

Latin students also will participate in North Carolina and Charlotte Classics Week April 15 to 22, in which they will celebrate through hosting mosaic making stations at the South County and Matthews libraries.

Seeking justice before jumping to conclusions

When I was practicing law in Scotland, I sometimes appeared before a judge who, by all accounts, was a decent man. But it was well known that he favored the side which first appeared before him.

So prosecutors loved him, as they always presented their evidence first. Plaintiffs (called pursuers in Scotland) also loved him because they, similarly, led evidence first.

Pastor John H. Munro Although he was a good man, he was a bad judge. A competent judge suspends making a decision until he has heard all of the evidence.

King Solomon put it this way: “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him” (Proverbs 18:17). This is very sound advice. In a court case, cross-examination is vital, as the evidence by one side is then tested by the other side. Most people can sound convincing if their evidence and allegations are never tested.

Every day all of us are tempted to make judgments about people and events. With social media and 24 hours of “breaking news,” it is very easy to jump to quick conclusions about a particular issue or person when all we have really heard is one side. Many people quickly put statements on social media based on half-truths, rumors, allegations or unsubstantiated statements. On the face of

it, they may appear to be experts on the issue they present.

But the fact that someone makes an allegation or an accusation does not prove the veracity of the statement. Wise people reserve judgment until they have heard “the whole truth.” The one who states his case first might be lying, prejudiced, or simply unaware of all the facts.

Over the years, many couples with marital problems have come to me seeking counsel. Often a wife will first present her side of the difficulties. She might not be lying or trying to deceive me, but in many cases, she is selective in what she tells me. Then, when I meet with her husband, I hear another side of the truth. Wisdom requires all of us to suspend judgment until all the facts are known. Too often we jump to conclusions based on our prejudices, preconceptions, or whether we like or dislike a person or viewpoint. In a criminal trial, the accused is presumed to be innocent until all the evidence is presented, and a verdict then reached.

The Old Testament prophet, Micah, said that the Lord requires of us that we “do justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8). God is infinite in His justice, and we who claim to be His children should also live justly and show kindness to all, rather than quickly believing some accusation or rumor, and possibly even gossiping about it to others.

While Lady Justice is blind and her scales of justice perfectly balanced, the reality in our world is often very different. But I am thankful for a God who is infinite in His justice, and whose judgments are always just, impartial, and loving. Let’s always seek to be just and kind, and not quickly jump to conclusions when we have only heard one side.

Butler lacrosse looks to go deeper in postseason

Butler boys’ lacrosse team has seen a small taste of success, but it wants a bigger portion this season.

The Bulldogs made their first postseason appearance two years ago with a wildcard berth. They followed that by earning a regular at-large bid, and made a run to the second round last season. Butler (4-4, 3-1 Conference 11) is thirsty for more.

“This year our main goal, especially for the seniors coming back, we wanted to at least do that – make the playoffs on our own merit and we at least want to make it to the second round and possibly give ourselves a chance to push it forward and make it a step further,” Butler coach Chad Smith said.

Smith, who is in his third year at the helm after serving as an assistant coach with the program for one season, said Butler has a good mix of players from each class, but the core of the team is its nine seniors. Most of those guys have been playing together since middle school, which helps them work well together on the field.

He said their experience is the only way to build a program.

“A lot of schools – and Butler’s one of those schools – for years and years we’ve had guys start in ninth grade and it was the first time they picked up a stick, but now we’re starting to get freshmen come in who have played two or three years,” Smith said.

“If they can do that as a freshman and come in with experience and play together for four years, that’s what really helps build a program or make a program be more consistent.”

Seniors goalie Matt Nunziata (Ursinus College signee), midfielder Cory VanGinhoven (Stony Brook University signee) and attackman Jacob Thorpe have been integral components to the Bulldogs’ success, and have elevated their play in their final campaign at Butler.

Butler’s lacrosse team has the offensive firepower to score with the best, but needs its defense to catch up first.

“We all have fun out there,” VanGinhoven said. “We try to bring each other up. We do our best. We try to bring up the younger kids, and make them do better. Matt, Jacob and I all try to be leaders for this team, and try to get everybody else to step up.”

Nunziata said he and his teammates have exceeded expectations thus far, and Butler’s 14-5 win over Independence in the season opener March 1 has been the highlight of the season.

“Every time we play Independence, it’s usually somewhat of a close game,” Nunziata said. “This year, we just went out and smacked them. It was probably one of the most fun games I’ve played in.”

VanGinhoven believes Butler’s comeback win over Providence was even more impressive. The Bulldogs overcame a 7-1 first quarter deficit to beat the Panthers, 19-18, on the road March 17.

Both make a strong case. Needless to say, those are two benchmark victories the Bulldogs can use as important confidence-

building wins as they seek to improve and compete at a high level throughout this season.

“I think we’re pretty confident,” Thorpe said. “I definitely think we can increase our confidence. We have some games we should have won, but I definitely think our confidence is pretty high. Win or lose, we’re going to love each other. I’d like to see us win one or two playoff games and end on a good note.”

While team chemistry isn’t a problem for this group, Smith wants his team to improve its communication. That will come in time, as his players gain more experience and spend more time practicing and playing together.

Usually, defenses are further along than offenses early in the season. Ironically, that is not the case for Butler, which returned nearly its entire offense and lost most of its defense.

The Bulldogs depend heavily on their offense, which is buoyed

by VanGinhoven (33 goals and five assists) and Thorpe (21 goals and 16 assists).

“Having that senior leadership in the goal has helped us on defense,” Smith said. “We’ve had a lot of new guys start on defense, and that was what I was a little worried about this year, but having a senior goalie in there leading the new guys has really made our defense much better than what I anticipated.

“Usually, if our defense can do a decent job and let our offense get the ball, then offensively I have faith that we’re going to do enough offensively to be in a ballgame as long as our defense stands the test of whoever we’re playing.”

For Butler to become a balanced team, its defense must catch up with its offense. If the Bulldogs can make those necessary strides in terms of denying opponents scoring opportunities and turn those into points for themselves, Butler might become a force to reckon with in the greater Charlotte.

Covenant Day Lady Lions off to strong start under new coach

Covenant Day’s girls’ soccer team is thriving under coach Graham West, who is in his first year at the helm after serving as an assistant coach and the junior varsity coach. The Lions have jumped out to a solid 5-1-2 (1-0-1 CISAA) start with their most recent win coming in dominating fashion, as they beat N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state runner-up, Providence Day, 6-0, April 5.

West inherited a talented roster of coachable players, which has made the transition seamless for both parties.

“They’re sweet girls, they serve others, they serve others in the community, they care about others, but on the field, they get after it,” West said.

“We have four values here – we’re family, we’re committed, we’re passionate, and our identity is in Christ. Those girls epitomize that.

It makes the culture and environment of playing here great to be a part of.”

The familial and fun atmosphere began with an overnight gym lock-in before the season started, which included games, a dance party, and culminated with a pancake breakfast in the morning.

It’s progressed with a weekly meeting that includes the school’s JV and middle school players. West has the girls break up into mixed small groups, where the varsity players spend time with the JV and middle school players.

“We’re all a family, and that’s one of our core values here,” junior center forward Alina McCue said. “We’re here for each other on and off the field, which makes it really nice. That way we can be competitive, but we can still love each other and we always have each other’s back.”

in Covenant Day’s win over Clinton in the Brittany Showcase in Wilson on March 11, gives the Lions a dynamic scoring threat, and is a matchup nightmare for opponents.

“I’m always trying to score goals, play outside, do some onetwos, get the ball back and finish, lay it off for other people to

finish,” McCue said.

West said McCue, a Mercer commit, is a unique player, who is quick, strong and determined.

“She’s certainly on track to break the school’s scoring record,” West said. “She has a unique nose for the goal and eye for the goal, where every so often she’ll score a goal that’s just at another level.”

Covenant Day also is led by senior defensive center midfielder Lexi Hunkler, who protects the backline, reads the game well, and does a good job of timing her tackles.

“As she’s developed over the years she’s also become more and more capable of being a quality possession player, where she’s composed on the ball,” West said of Hunkler. “She can win the ball, and begin our attack. That’s really been a key for us this year.”

Hunkler gives the Lions a player in the midfield that drives the ball through to set up scoring opportunities for McCue and others.

That favors Covenant Day, which passes the ball, gets into open space and attacks well.

Senior midfielder Emi Leneave and junior midfielder/forward Maddie Coggins also have emerged as significant contributors for Covenant Day. This is a big year for the Lions, but it’s especially important to Hunkler, since it’s her final season with Covenant Day. For Hunkler, Covenant Day’s 1-1 tie with Marvin Ridge March 15 is the benchmark performance thus far, and it gives her and her teammates something to build on the rest of the season.

“We held our own,” Hunkler said. “We battled hard. It was kind of the first game where we were like, ‘Hey, this team’s got something.’ We were able to possess the ball. We had a lot of good combinations. I was very proud of us with the score.

“This year, we’re focusing a lot technically, so that’s what I’m excited for, is improving our technical skills and really being able to possess the ball.”
