Matthews Farmers’ Market opens
Daycare must overcome traffic concerns by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com
The Matthews Farmers' Market will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year and open for the spring season on Saturday, featuring everything from local produce to natural soaps.
MATTHEWS – Despite addressing the town’s initial concerns about building a downtown daycare center, developers face a new set of challenges that could potentially stunt the project’s growth. Matthews Parkway Corporate Center has been trying since last year to rezone 1.2 acres at 720 Park Center Drive to build a Primrose School that could serve upward of 185 children daily. The center withdrew its application in December 2015 to change the site plan and building elevations to better align with what’s in downtown, said John Carmichael, an attorney representing the applicant. New plans call for an L-shaped building up to 12,800 square feet to front North Ames Street and Park Center Drive. Parents would drive in on North Ames Street and have access to about 51 parking spaces, some of which are included as on-street parking. “We think it would provide a service to the downtown area, not only to the work force but to the residential that would be coming to the downtown area in the future,” Carmichael said of the daycare.
