Senior housing approved near future hospital

MINT HILL – Charlotte City Council unanimously approved Tuesday, Jan. 19, a request for senior housing on 371 acres next to the future Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center.

The site at Albemarle and Rocky River Church roads consists mostly of vacant land with some single-family homes and Jake’s Good Eats, a restaurant featured on the Food Network.

Kolter Acquisitions LLC’s request to rezone the land received little resistance from leaders since the application was filed in June 2015.

City staff supported the proposal even though a portion was inconsistent with Charlotte’s density plans.

“In light of the proposed hospital and retail uses to the west of the subject site, and the commercial zoning to the east of the site, well-designed office and retail uses are appropriate for the portion of the site fronting Albemarle Road,” Tammie Keplinger told the council Dec. 14. “The proposed non-residential development along Albemarle Road is intended to have a pedestrian-oriented character and provides a direct connection to the large neighborhood that is planned for the rear portion of the site, and could also complement the hospital with potential medical offices and services.”

Novant Health is building a medical campus at the corner of Albemarle Road and Interstate 485.

A 13,000-square-foot physician plaza is being built first and is expected to open in fall 2016. The 100,000-square-foot hospital and 80,000-square-foot medical office will likely open in 2018.

Kolter Homes is developing the senior housing under the Cresswind active adult brand.

John Morgan, of Kolter Homes, previously told the council that his company focuses on superior quality, innovative designs, amenity-rich environments and creating better communities.

The project consists of three areas: • Up to 850 age-restricted homes, with as many as 150 units belonging to a duplex with amenities.

• Up to 290,000 square feet of restaurant and office space.

• A nursing home of 230 dependent or independent living units.

The development team told the six residents attending the Sept. 24 community meeting that the project could take eight years to complete, considering a similar community in Myrtle Beach sold about 100 homes per year, according to meeting minutes. The first phase could consist of about a dozen models to tour.

Former Radio 4 the Ages host launches AARP show

David Gwilt has always had a passion for senior citizens.

Gwilt, a former Matthews resident and business owner, launched a senior-themed radio program, Radio 4 the Ages, in 2011.

He ended the program 11 months ago due to financial constraints; however, though one door closed, another one opened.

Gwilt met Michael Olender, associate state director for AARP Charlotte, while hosting a Radio 4 the Ages program several years ago. The two recently joined forces to launch “Without Limits,” a weekly AARP Charlotte talk radio show held every Saturday from 6 to 7 p.m. on WBT 1110 AM and 99.3 FM. “It’s Charlotte based with Charlotte topics relevant to the 50-plus (years old) crowd here in Charlotte,” Gwilt said.

The first show took place on Saturday, Jan. 16, and featured special guest Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts. The mayor discussed efforts to make Charlotte more generationally friendly, along with the experiences that led her to become the city’s mayor.

The Jan. 30 show will feature Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor, who will discuss the town’s recent designation as an “Age Friendly” community. Other shows in the coming weeks will focus on volunteerism, dating after 50 years old (Valentine’s

weekend), Parkinson’s disease, how STDs and HIV affect the aging population, grandparents raising grandchildren, services for the deaf and hard of hearing and more.

“Our primary goal is all about the entertainment side of it,” Gwilt said. “…

We’re trying to combine fun shows with serious stuff. It’s entertainment, information and education.”

Gwilt also travels throughout the area giving a presentation for senior citizens he calls “PLEASE,” standing for “prayer, laughter, exercise, attitude and service every day.”

“It’s an inspirational and entertaining hour filled with insightful musings on aging with wonder, maximizing abilities and embracing life, with an underlying spiritual message that our primary purpose service to others,” Gwilt said.

PLEASE presentations are scheduled for Feb. 3, a Wednesday, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy. in south Charlotte; and Feb. 4, a Thursday, at Plantation Estates, 733 Plantation Estates Drive in Matthews.

There is no cost to attend, and reservations aren’t required.

In January, shoppers will have the chance ways to “save money while supporting Special Olympics,” according to a news release.

P&G will donate three cents for every coupon redeemed, with no limitations or spending requirements.

Barbara Taylor is the director of the Matthews Heritage Museum. Located at 232 N. Trade St., the museum is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday.

Why did you become the director of the Matthews Heritage Museum?

I have worked in museums my entire career.

With the economic downturn in 2009 I lost my current position as director of the High Point Museum. After four years of searching, I decided a move to Charlotte, where I had lived before, as it would afford me a better chance to find a position. The museum was a few months away from opening and it is exciting to be at the startup of a museum. I knew I could give it a good start based on my previous experiences.

Tell us a little about the museum.

The museum is a little jewel. While it tells the history of Matthews, people come away with an understanding of life at the turn of the 19th century and life in a small town.

What’s the best part of your job?

The two favorite things about the job are working with the volunteers and continuing to research local history. The docents are wonderful and very giving. They love the museum and learning the local history. They bring an enthusiasm to the job and enjoy sharing their knowledge with the visitors. I do have some time to

What's a piece of Matthews history most people might not know?

An interesting piece of Matthews history, shared with Mecklenburg County, is the extent of gold mining in the area. In particular, I became interested in researching the Rea Mine which T. J. Renfrow first oversaw in 1880. That mine was located on Monroe Road in the vicinity of Sardis Road. One of the major shafts of the mine was located where the Carolina Theater at Crown Point is located. People are amazed that this area had over 100 gold mines.

Tell us a little about the museum's current rotating display.

Our current exhibit “Girl Scouts Through the Years” celebrates the local council of Girl Scouts 80th year. This exhibit features several uniforms, books and badges, as well as pins and other jewelry worn by Girl Scouts. This has been our most popular exhibit to date and many troops have taken a tour of the museum and the exhibit.

Therefore we have decided to extend the exhibit until March 19 so more troops can visit the museum.

News Briefs Matthews hires Hawke as new assistant town manager MATTHEWS – The town of Matthews named Becky Hawke its new assistant manager, succeeding Jamie Justice, who left in November 2015 to become town manager for the town of Davidson. “The town conducted a thorough search to find a new assistant manager, and we received 88 applicants,� said Town Manager Hazen Blodgett. “We went through an assessment process where Ms. Hawke clearly emerged as the top candidate. We are excited to have Becky on our team.�

Hawke comes with nine years of experience in local government. She most recently worked in human resources, risk management and public relations for the town of Christiansburg, Virginia. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Hollins University and a master’s degree in professional communications from Radford University. “I am excited to continue my career in Matthews,� said Hawke. “The town staff have been very welcoming. I look forward to learning more about the community in my new role.�

She will begin her role on Feb. 8.

Boy Scouts to collect food for nonprofit Loaves & Fishes MINT HILL – The Mecklenburg County Council of the Boy Scouts of America will be “Scouting for Food� Feb. 6, a Saturday, to donate nonperishable food times to nonprofit Loaves & Fishes. Loaves & Fishes provides a week’s worth of groceries to individuals and families experiencing a crisis through a network of 20 food pantries in Mecklenburg County. The organization helped provide groceries for 72,000 individuals last year. Fortyeight percent of those were children.

The Boy Scouts will distribute grocery bags provided by Harris Teeter in neighborhoods throughout the county the week before Feb.

Matthews Fire to hold Open House for potential volunteers MATTHEWS – Matthews Fire and EMS departments will hold an open house for residents interested in volunteer recruitment on Jan. 23, a Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Fire Station 1, located at 236 S. Trade St. The town has received a grant to target volunteer recruitment and retention of all ages, with a target audience for those 16 to 21 years old. The open house will feature, “something for everyone,� according to a news release, and also will include information about the department’s Explorer Program, aimed at high school students.

Firefighters and EMTs must be 18 years old or older. Previous training or experience is not required. Training, equipment and uniforms will be provided to volunteers at no cost.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, In response to Mr. Witherell's letter found in the Jan. 15, 2016 issue, I wanted to make an important clarification.

Donald Trump did not say that all Mexicans are rapists. He said, "Among all the illegal immigrants coming from Mexico were some pretty bad people, some of them were rapists, some of the were drug dealers.� – Donald Trump, page 14, “Crippled America.�

In Trump's book, “Crippled America,� he eloquently describes the fact that there are "351,000 criminal illegal aliens in our prisons that cost America over $1 billion a year."

He also is very clear of his support for legal immigrants that contribute positively to society. Living in America is a privilege.

Through a proper legal vetting process and an existence of a wall, we can filter out those will questionable intensions. This is vital in a country where our prisons are over capacity.

We as taxpayers are fitting the bill. We also cannot forget the massive amount of illegal drugs that are smuggled across the border that directly lead to crime.

I suggest that Mr. Witherell read Trump's book and not only depend on media outlet's interpretation of his words, he may even end up voting for him.

We might be dying, but we’re getting rich too If you’re old enough to remember, there was a time when families sat down to eat dinner and, somewhere between your last bite of green beans and your first bite of meatloaf, that corded weapon hanging on the wall Jonathan McElvy started to ring.

There was no such thing as Caller ID back then, and you had no idea if it was Grandma or some goon from Greenville on the other end of the line pitching a steam cleaner that could miraculously suck germs off a soap bar.

I miss those days of dinner interruptions. I miss when our only annoyance came from a broke college kid calling to inform mom that her son had been named to the Who’s Who of Brilliant Booger Biters. For one night only, mom could buy a hard-cover album with my name on Page 393 for the low, low price of $39.95.

The reason I miss those days? Email. And by email, what I obviously mean are the 77 emails I received (on my work account) in one day from people and businesses that believe I have some very serious medical problems.

It all started with a company that proudly proclaimed its product offered the best heart attack warning system in America. When I didn’t click on that piece of spam, I promptly received a second email from the same Russian warehouse offering a product that could quickly heal me from my recent heart attack.

The only medical reason I’d have to fear a heart attack would be from utter paranoia brought on by the next dump of emails.

Apparently, I need a new drug that will defeat diabetes. I received four emails reminding me that I should immediately start taking an inventive new probiotic because there’s a chance I’m grossly overweight. I received another two emails from the Mayo clinic telling me they had found a cure for hearing loss. Worst of all, I was offered a product that will fix all my sagging skin, which seems odd considering I haven’t even had time to lose all that weight.

That’s OK, I quickly received another email that I could buy a product and have skin that looks just like Jennifer Lopez’s, which would be great if I were, you know, a woman.

In the sort of humor you can’t make up, the next email came from a company informing me they are legally allowed to sell cannabis pills in all 50 states, which is about the only pill I’d buy if I had heart disease, obesity, diabetes, no hearing and sagging skin.

Besides the obvious medical crisis I face, not all companies think I’m in such bad shape. I had email offers from four different

vendors, all notifying me that they would immediately deposit money into my account. A couple were lowball offers – one is sending me $562; another $961. The other two were more my speed. If I’ll hand over my bank account information, I can have checks for $15,000 and $250,000 deposited tomorrow.

That’s the reason I didn’t even buy a PowerBall lottery ticket last week. Combine all those deposits and I’ll pull in a cool $266,523 just tomorrow. And that doesn’t even count the seven straight days of $50 at Kohl’s and another $100 in free Macy’s dollars. Now we’re up to $266,973, and if the PowerBall winners took home a combined $500 million after taxes, I can have just as much as them in 5.13 years.

The problem I have with spam email isn’t that businesses are out there trying to make a buck. According to one (very small) piece of research on this topic, I found most companies can earn about $10 off of every 1,000 emails they send. So if they send 100,000 emails, they earn $1,000, and if these jokers send out 1 million emails, that’s an easy 10 grand. Without getting into too many details, these virtual mail warehouses send out millions upon millions of emails each day, based on lists they’ve either purchased or stolen from the Web, and it’s an enormous business.

No, my problem is that the braniacs in Washington D.C. aren’t smart enough to fig-

ure out a way to put a halt to the invasiveness.

In 2003, bureaucrats basically legalized spam email in something called the CANSPAM act. Once again, you can’t make up this irony: CAN-SPAM stands for “Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing.”

Without too much legal mumbo-jumbo, here’s what the act says: You have to allow people to unsubscribe to your emails and your subject line can’t be misleading. In our business, they call it “truth in advertising,” and email spammers are “required” to offer us a little truth, which means I’m on the brink of death, even though I’m getting a quarter million bucks tomorrow.

I love technology. I even love email. Call me an old-timer, but I kind of miss the days when companies couldn’t intrude on our lives at every single turn.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, Netflix just sent me an email because I might like a recently added show called “Dawn of the Croods.”

No lie, here’s the summary: “The world’s first family is back for more laughs as they discover sports, sleepovers and other wonders in a world of exotic creatures.”

Sports and sleepovers with exotic creatures, huh? Sounds like an entirely different category of spam emails I get ever so often.

MATTHEWS – It’s a new year, and Matthews Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resource has a plethora of special events planned to keep residents and surrounding community members engaged during 2016.

Returning this year will be the town’s biggest annual festivals – Earth Day, BeachFest, Matthews Alive and the annual tree lighting in December – along with weekly, monthly and seasonal favorites, such as Food Truck Fridays, First Friday Movie Series, Summer Concert and Movie Series and others.

The Food Truck Friday & Artist Showcase will start March 4 and run weekly in Stumptown Park through September 30, with exceptions on May 13 and 20 and Sept. 2.

“We’re going to start (Food Truck Friday) and stop it a little earlier,” Lee Anne Moore, the town’s special events manager, said.

“March might be a little chilly, but we’re going to bring out some coffee trucks … some warm dessert trucks; we won’t pull out the popsicle trucks until it gets a little warmer.”

Matthews hosted BeachFest – which was previously held during the last weekend in April – in mid-May for the first time last year, with positive response. The town plans to continue that new tradition this year in order to attract more attendees, Moore said.

BeachFest was created to “bring the beach”

to Matthews and features a variety of beachthemed activities, including carnival rides, food trucks, beach music, sand, games, shag dancing, a car show and more.

“We wanted to avoid other beach(themed) festivals,” Moore said of the town’s decision to move the date of BeachFest.

“SOS in Myrtle Beach will be over by then, so hopefully that will bring a ton of shaggers to come on down to our festival.”

Matthews will host Charlotte Food Fight, previously held in Charlotte’s South End district, for the first time this year. Re-dubbed “Food Fight Matthews,” the event will take place May 21 in downtown Matthews and feature dozens of food trucks that will “battle” for the title of “best food truck.” Attendees will have the chance to be “community judges” for the event and cast votes for their favorite trucks.

The town’s Summer Concert and Movie Series will feature various family films – including “The Good Dinosaur,” “Inside Out” and “Zootopia” – along with bands like The Entertainers and The Catalinas. Though the town hasn’t announced its Matthews Alive entertainment lineup yet, Moore said some “exciting” things are in the works.

“We’re anticipating exciting headliners (and) … will be announcing those in the weeks ahead,” she said.

Family Dollar employees in limbo after CEO’s resignation

MATTHEWS – The fate of Matthews-based Family Dollar and its employees is unclear and the corporation hasn’t said much to quiet idle minds.

Many have concerns about how the Virginia-based Dollar Tree’s acquisition of Family Dollar will affect its employees and the Matthews community.

Dollar Tree completed its acquisition of Family Dollar on July 6, 2015 with the promise Family Dollar CEO Howard Levine would remain on the payroll for two years to complete the combining of the two companies, but Dollar Tree announced last week Levine’s last day was Jan. 15.

"It was very important to me for Howard to remain with our company and to contribute to the combination of our two large organizations. He has been an integral leader at Family Dollar for more than two decades, and has accumulated a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience,” Bob Sasser, Dollar Tree chief executive officer, said in a news release. “I would like to commend Howard for his many years of service and leadership at Family Dollar, and to thank him for his partnership during our integration. Howard has completed everything I have asked of him during this process, and has proven to be a valuable resource to both (Family Dollar's President and Chief Operating Officer) Gary Philbin and me.”

Dollar Tree also said the company would have at least $300 million of savings over three years, according to a public statement to Wall Street.

Dollar Tree stated in order for the integration of Family Dollar and Dollar Tree to be successful, they would need to make that savings.

salary, but analysts say Dollar Tree needs to employ more options to make those savings happen, such as lowering costs from suppliers, lowering business expenses – including payroll – and synergizing their supplier base, or streamlining its organizational structure.

Dollar Tree has tried to streamline the number of products in Family Dollar stores, and is starting to limit slowmoving inventory and cut down on the number of products Family Dollar offers. Dollar Tree reported more than $70 million of “unproductive inventory” at Family Dollar in its last conference call.

During its third-quarter report, Dollar Tree reported a gross margin decrease of 28.3 percent from 34.6 percent in the same quarter a year ago.

pense for Family Dollar related to SKU rationalization and planned liquidations, and $38.4 million for Family Dollar related to the amortization of the stepped up inventory basis,” Dollar Tree said in its third-quarter reports.

Despite the drop, Dollar Tree reported the decrease was more of a short-term pain for a long-term gain.

Dollar Tree has not publically reported any initial savings since the acquisition, but experts say the company could find savings in downsizing employees in the corporate office.

Many employees have left the company, according to current Family Dollar employees, and have been replaced with less experienced workers.

Layoffs at Family Dollar came in April 2014, but employees are concerned additional layoffs will come after Levine’s departure.

Levine’s management team – the same team present before the acquisition – might have numbered days. Business insiders believe Dollar Tree will conduct a layoff in the next few weeks. Family Dollar currently has 1,200 employees at its corporate office in Matthews.

Bryn Winburn, public and media relations manager at Family Dollar, would not comment on the status of employees and said the company is not conducting any interviews.

Questions also loom regarding the future of Family Dollar’s inventory warehouse, located adjacent to Family Dollar corporate offices. The Matthews warehouse is completely manual. Dollar Tree plans to open a fully-automated warehouse in Spartanburg, South Carolina by the middle of this year. Dollar Tree has not reported the fate of the Matthews warehouse when the Spartanburg warehouse opens 90 miles away.

Winburn said the company would “likely” discuss its outlook for 2016 during its fourth-quarter conference call currently scheduled for March 1.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders provided a glimpse of the district’s future that could help improve student pathways.

The Hood Hargett Breakfast Club hosted its monthly luncheon on Jan. 14, featuring CMS Superintendent Ann Clark and state and district board of education (BOE) member Eric Davis.

Clark and Davis discussed district topics, including the pending superintendent search, upcoming challenges, student reassignment, the teacher pipeline and what concerns the state. Both gave insight into what to expect for CMS’s future.

“It’s no coincidence we’ve achieved (academic strides) during her tenure,” Davis said.

Chuck Hood, of Hood Hargett, said he was ready for the district to have some consistency. He did not want the board to conduct a national search for superintendent and seeks to keep Clark in office.

Davis said the board hopes to “get off the duff” in the next few weeks, citing a board retreat on Jan. 22 might provide answers.

In the meantime, Davis also encourages community members to reach out to board members regarding making movement on the search.

CMS population needs community to ‘buy-in’ county are foreign-born, which 18.8 percent of residents speaking another language at home with 52 percent of residents stating they don’t speak English “very well.” Forty-eight percent of those who speak another language at home speak Spanish.

The Census Bureau estimated approximately 147,896, or about 15 percent, Mecklenburg County residents lived below the poverty threshold in 2013. Approximately 2,014 were considered homeless on Jan. 29, 2015, and 81 percent of them were black.

Mecklenburg County’s highest poverty areas include zip codes 28208 near the airport; 28205 – Plaza Midwood and part of NoDa; 28212 and 28215.

The high-poverty zip codes include some of CMS’s 76 Title I schools, including McClintock Middle School, Greenway Park Elementary School, Oakhurst STEAM Academy, Eastway Middle School and Harding High School.

However, some of those zip codes, such as 28205 and 28212 are directly adjacent to two zip codes (28204 and 28207) with the lowest poverty in the county. Poverty resides a street or two away from the Cherry and Elizabeth neighborhoods and SouthPark areas where the least number of people of poverty live.

However, a recent report from Paul Jargowsky at The Century Foundation states high-poverty neighborhoods have seen a greater increase in population than low-poverty areas.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student reassignment discussions have ignited a laundry list of questions about the social issues in Mecklenburg County.

Mecklenburg County has polarized wealth between the high-poverty and low-poverty areas, many of which reside next door to each other.

But who makes up Mecklenburg County?

Who are the children attending CharlotteMecklenburg’s public schools?

CMS reported they enrolled 146,140 students this year. That population broke down into 40 percent black students, 29 percent white students, 22 percent Hispanic students, 6 percent Asian students and 3 percent American Indian or multiracial.

Approximately 187 countries are represented in CMS, with 175 languages spoken by students.

A recent CMS report stated 37,170 students speak another language when they go home and CMS has approximately 17,000 limited English proficiency students.

CMS is a relatively diverse district, but U.S. Census data appears to present a different ethnic picture of the entire county.

White populations (49.3 percent) make up the largest ethnic group with black (32.1 percent) and Hispanic (12.6 percent) populations following behind.

Two Harvard University economic professors deemed Charlotte the second toughest place behind Baltimore, Maryland for kids to escape poverty. This means Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s children of poverty most likely will become adults of poverty.

What do the numbers mean?

Experts say if the community doesn’t get involved now, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area will continue to experience polarized wealth, but money isn’t the solution.

Business leaders put money into the lowperforming schools through programs, such as Project L.I.F.T., but the problems are completely solved in the west Charlotte corridor, according to Roslyn Mickelson, a sociology professor at UNC Charlotte, who has researched school desegregation and resegregation in Charlotte. She believes the voting population has switched, as more Latino, Asian and black families migrate into the area. More white voters “don’t have a sense of what the community went through,” while the ethnic voters are weary of “black” issues, Mickelson added.

Black neighborhoods create black schools because student assignment is mostly based on geography. A study earlier this year from Stanford found middle-class black families will reside in neighborhoods with lower incomes than the

typical low-income white family. A study from two Harvard economists tracked children and where they grew up influenced their lives. The study found children who grow up in neighborhoods with less poverty and crime and schools with higher test scores progressed better as adults than their “worse” neighborhood counterparts.

Some experts are concerned if the community doesn’t step in, children of poverty will not be prepared adults – the next generation of voters, leaders and decision makers.

They encourage the community to introduce alternate career paths to children of poverty and investment time through volunteering.

School officials call for more participation of the community in schools through volunteering – particularly parents and other adult role models in a child’s life.

Mickelson encourages community “buy-in” of helping reach children of poverty, which she said can include adjusting attendance boundaries, increasing magnet programs and coordinating school and housing policies.

Some community members hope CMS will gain more corporate partners to help increase community buy-in, which may help level the playing field for high versus low poverty schools.

“We can get this right. We are strong and we can be stronger,” said Mary Nell McPherson, executive director of Freedom School Partners.

“We can choose the kind of community where all children grow into who they were created to be.”

I discovered Pandora and reconnected with my original break up song

I am part of the “Flashing 12” generation. You know what that means, right?

We are the generation that never figured out how to set the clock on our VHS recorder (for those of you who forRev. Tony Marciano got – VHS were those big tapes we stuck in a machine to watch videos. They preceded DVDs and Netflix).

You can imagine my wonder when I discovered Pandora. It was great. Growing up in the 70s, I decided to listen to that wonderful “1970s” easy listening music – Hall and Oates, Gordon Lightfoot, etc.

One day I was enjoying the music when my favorite “break up” song came on.

The year was 1975. I was dating my first girlfriend. I got into John Denver music because she liked John Denver music. I bought two of his records and played them because that was what she liked.

Unfortunately, things weren’t going quite as well as I had hoped.

The pastor invited the youth over to his house for a Sunday night Bible study and sing along. I was singing while she was “messing around” with some other guy in the youth group. It was bad.

During that time, the band Ace came out with the song, “How Long Has This Been Going On?” One of the lines is, “But I can’t help but have my suspicions, cause I ain’t quite as dumb as I seem.”

Other lyrics are, “Oh, your friends with their fancy persuasions, don’t admit that it’s part of a scheme, but I can’t help but have my suspicions, cause I ain’t quite as dumb as I seem. And you say you were never intendin’ to break up our scene in this way, but there ain’t any use in pretendin’, it could happen to us any day” then back to the chorus, “How long has this been going on?”

She came over to my house to break up with me. I still remember what she was wearing. She said the classic line, “You’re a nice guy but this isn’t working.” I listened, smiled and watched her drive off.

I was told her mother’s heart was broken. Her mom liked me more than the new boyfriend. I just wasn’t as exciting as the new guy. He was fun; I was serious. He was the class clown. I was the guy who never got in trouble. She married that guy. I never listened to John Denver songs again. A few years later, we were all

in a friend’s wedding. Needless to say, it was awkward.

When she broke up with me, I felt rejected. I remember going to help my father with a project we were working on in the garage. He tried to comfort me as he watched his son going through his first breakup. It hurt. It hurt like no one’s tomorrow. You want to die; you actually think you’re going to die.

You don’t.

God doesn’t break up with me when I don’t measure up. He’s not surprised when I mess up as if I caught him “off guard.”

He doesn’t say, “Didn’t see that one coming.” He doesn’t walk away because I’m not cool, not funny or not perfect. He doesn’t “roll His eyes” in shame when I embarrass Him with my behavior. In fact, He says, “I will never leave you or forsake you.”

I still laugh when that song comes on the radio. It is my “ultimate” break up song. I’m also glad that God won’t break up with me.

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Carmel Christian shooting for conference crown and beyond

The N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association admits 12 teams in its boys’ 2A state playoffs. Carmel Christian missed the tournament by one spot last season, and was on the outside looking in after going 15-9 (4-4 Southern Piedmont).

The selection committee takes one’s strength of schedule seriously when deciding which teams are most worthy for a postseason berth. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they are a 2A team playing in a predominantly 1A conference, which was counted against them during the selection process last season.

In turn, Carmel Christian (14-8, 8-0 Southern Piedmont) beefed up it’s nonconference slate this season with the likes of West Chester Country Day, Asheville Christian Academy, Davidson Day, Northside Christian Academy, Carolina Day, Gaston Day, Northwood Temple Academy and Christ School, and has run the table in league play.

Carmel Christian has six games remaining on its schedule before its conference tournament. The Cougars likely need to win all of those games and the conference tournament too to bolster their resume and earn a spot in the state playoffs.

Carmel Christian can’t control what conference it’s in and the teams in it, but have clearly gone out of its way to challenge itself with a difficult nonconference slate to more than deserve the respect of the selection committee. A 22-8 record and conference regular season and tournament titles should get the Cougars over the hump this time around.

“We came into the year and we communicated to all the guys that we wanted to do our first

goal, and that is we want to win the conference,” Carmel Christian coach Josh Coley said.

“If we win the conference regular season and if we win the conference tournament at that point it’s up to the bowl committee… They weight our schedule and who we played, but at least we did our job.”

Coley added the players have been consistent, steady, and have done everything he and his staff have asked them to do.

This is especially true for senior center Mac Brydon (8.4 ppg and 7.5 rpg), who has seen the program evolve from something insignificant into a force to reckon with.

“We’re continuing to develop and bring in young talent,” Brydon said. “We have nothing but young talent around me. It’s developed into a legitimate team. In the future it’s going to be more serious and get bigger and bigger.”

Brydon nearly jumped ship his first two years.

He said he talked with his father about transferring, but committed himself to Carmel Christian and its basketball program once Coley took the helm his junior year.

“Finally having a coach that was on my team and trying to get me where I needed to be and wanted the entire team and the entire school to be taken to the next level is great,” Brydon said.

What else has made a difference in Carmel Christian’s improvement and evolution as a legitimate basketball program is getting quality players, who aren’t just good at basketball, but play well together and take pride in their individual roles.

Brett Swilling, a sophomore forward and United Faith Christian Academy transfer, has emerged as a lockdown defender. He also gives the Cougars another reliable scorer (10.4 ppg, 3.4 rbg and one spg).

“Defense is the key to winning games,” Swill-

ing said. “If you have a great defense that leads over to offense. Usually, my defense gets me going on my offense, so if I have a really good defensive game that will translate to my offense. It really helps.”

Carmel Christian entered one of its games with a key player sick. The plan was for that player to defend the opposition’s leading scorer, but he was forced to miss the game due to walking pneumonia. Coley decided to put Swilling on him instead, and the guy didn’t score.

But the biggest and most pleasant surprise has come in the form of freshman guard Myles Pierre, who is averaging 15 ppg (team high), 3.4 rpg and two spg.

“From the first game of the season I shot the ball well,” Pierre said. “I didn’t have a very good first half, and I came out in the third quarter and I shot the ball very well. That showed me I could really play and do something to help this team.

“In the locker room before games I always make jokes, make people laugh, get relaxed. Going into the game relaxed, you play better.”

These three are key to Carmel Christian’s success, but the Cougars are made up of more than just this trio. Coley has 11 players on the team, and often plays 10 and sometimes, all of them.

Sophomore point guard Rafael Jenkins, junior shooting guard, Zach Prevette, junior power forward Jon Bryan and senior combo guard Roland Whitley enhance the Cougars’ attack and play integral roles that prevent opponents from keying in on one guy or just Pierre, Swilling and Brydon.

This is a deep and talented team, and might make a splash in the postseason if given the opportunity. If it continues it’s stellar play, Carmel Christian will be more than deserving for that opportunity to prove itself at the state level.

Queens Grant’s boys basketball remains undefeated in conference

Queens Grant’s boys’ basketball team is on fire. The Stallions (11-5, 3-0 Unwharrie) picked up their sixth consecutive win when it edged North Stanly (13-4, 2-1) 47-44 Jan. 19.

Senior big man Patrick Tape’, a Columbia signee, notched his 11th double-double of the season with 12 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals.

Queens Grant began its dramatic turnaround in its final game at the KSA Events Tournament to emerge above .500, and the Stallions haven’t looked back.

Their greatest challenge early in the season was learning how to play together, but the new players are adjusting well to coach Jay Forsythe’s system and are buying into the way he works.

“The guys are shooting the ball really well,” Forsythe said. “The good thing for us is if one guy is missing on one night we have so many shooters another guy is hitting. There’s not pressure on one guy to make shots for us.

“The guys are playing hard. They really are.

They’re doing whatever it takes to win. I think that’s the biggest thing is just the ability to come together and do whatever it takes to push the team toward a win.”

Their willingness to adjust proved to be significant in Queens Grant’s 61-58 comeback win over Wake Christian Academy Jan. 16. The Stallions trailed by 15 points at halftime before adjusting their defense to deny penetration, which led to their comeback.

This is a good time for Queens Grant to come together as a team, as it gets into the meat of conference play. However, Forsythe said his team hasn’t reached its full potential. That’s a good thing, because the Stallions don’t want to peak too early.

The Stallions hold a half game advantage over Albemarle (7-7, 2-0 Unwharrie), where they will visit Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Queens Grant, along with Albemarle and North Stanly, have emerged as the top teams in the conference, but Forsythe is quick to say the Stallions can’t take any team in the league for granted.

“We will take every game and every opponent one by one,” Forsythe said. “You got to be so careful in conference. You don’t want to overlook anybody. We have played a tough schedule up till now. We’ve played some really good teams, but each team from here on out we’re going to treat them as if it’s the best team we’re playing and give them our best.”

Forsythe said Queens Grant has a target on its back in the conference, and it’s going to get the best shot from all of its league foes.

Tape’ (9.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.4 spg and seven bpg) and junior guard Terron Dixon (16.5 ppg, seven rpg, 1.8 apg and 1.9 spg) get the most attention, but Queens Grant also is getting solid production from sophomore guard Chris Jackson and senior guards Jace Weir and Stephen Sawyer.

Senior reserve Tanner Pond gives the Stallions another reliable post presence when Tape’ needs a breather, while junior guard Noah Clemons has been strong on the defensive end.

“Those are some guys that are stepping up big time for us now,” Forsythe said.

The Bulldogs improved to 12-6 (4-2 Southwestern 4A), and maintained their third-place spot in the conference standings.

The Patriots dropped to 1-15 (0-6 Southwestern 4A), and remain last in the league.

Butler used its press defense to force Independence into turnovers, which created easy scoring opportunities. However, coach Mark Sanders wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t satisfied with the Bulldogsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; effort, especially on the defensive end. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got nine girls out there, and right now we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have nine girls making it happen on defense at one time,â&#x20AC;? Sanders said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sometimes we get five, sometimes we get four, sometimes we get three, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re striving to try to get five on the court at the same time.â&#x20AC;?

Sanders is hopeful this win will get the Bulldogs rolling as they enter the second half of conference play that includes a trip to Myers Park and a visit from Rocky River. Those are two teams Butler must beat if it hopes to win or get a share of the conference crown, which still appears to be a bit of a long shot for the Bulldogs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The teams at the bottom have gotten better,â&#x20AC;? Sanders said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When they elevate their play it brings the ones at the top a little closer to them, so as a whole the league has gotten better, because the bottom teams have gotten better. Right now, Myers Park is still the team to beat. I think theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re beatable.
