MACY’S
Location: Manhattan, NY This studio used propositions as a tool for developing arguments. With Manhattan as a framework, this proposition is an intervention on monolithic department stores, through the use of fitness studios in an effort to revitalize brick and mortar retail. We believe that combining a routine activity like fitness with an inconsistent retail program will help increase foot traffic through the department store. Using Macy’s flagship department store in New York City as our case study, we have extruded out studio space in a contradiction to the existing iconic building’s design to create a large scale visual advertisement.

To work with its surroundings, the form is a simple cube. To balance the simplicity of the exterior, the floor levels change inside as well as a light well penetrating the center of the building.

Champaign Infill’s site, currently a parking lot, has a party wall on both the east and west facades. This studio’s goal was to fill in the void on a very popular street in downtown Champaign. Knowing that the North part of the site had access to parking but was less accessible, a multi-story restaurant was created on the north half of the site to create a destination. To keep the south facade cohesive with its context, three retail spaces were created. The upper floors house offices, geared towards small businesses.

ARCH 374: Architecture Design and the City Programs: Rhino, Thea, Illustrator, and Photoshop Location: Chicago, IL This urban site is located at the southeast corner of Orleans and Division Street. This site is adjacent to the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) rail. With no way to get on or off the CTA from this site, this design has no direct relationship with the rail line. That choice was made to make sure the design first addresses the needs of the local community, as well as safety reasons. This design allows for the potential addition of a CTA stop, and responds to that possibility by providing ribbon windows on the east faรงade. With an open floor plan, this design also inspires people to learn and explore. The main atrium space in the middle of the building with a curtain wall, creates a visual relationship with the park across the street. The main goal of the Free Chicago Library was to create a place where people can learn. Not only that, but in an urban city, creating a place that people would want to stay.

#WMAINSAYS is a game that aims to uncover a more personal connection to the history, local businesses, and architecture on West Main Street. This game has three goals; the first being to incorporate the history of West Main Street and let it be discovered by the community. The second goal is to include learning about what currently exists by advertising and promoting the local businesses and organizations along West Main. The third goal is to make an architectural impact on the street. Lastly, by tying this game to a hashtag, #WMAINSAYS, there is an ability to add a digital element to this game. The overall hope is that #WMAINSAYS will get people excited to interact with the street and be proud to call it their own.

Located across the street from Long Center for Performing Arts, we chose to propose a Recreation Center. With the proximity to schools and the hot summer days, we thought having access to an ice area was something this area was lacking. Made of Corten steel, this design was chosen in a way to maximize daylight without adding standard windows. The sawtooth roof design allows for maximum daylight and created an interesting feature from the exterior. Keeping the Recreation Center in two separate forms allowed for direct access to the river, using our design as the connection between the street and the river. This design was submitted in the ACSA/ AISC Steel Design Compeition 2016-2017.

Greater Roosevelt Square is a very complex site owned by Chicago Housing Authority (CHA), and once home to public housing towers. This plan proposal involved months of extensive research and help from CHA, developers and architects in the City of Chicago. With CHA’s need to provide about 3,000 affordable units and the site being 54.5 acres, there were many layers to sort through. Being adjacent to the Brooks Homes, public housing, we wanted to make sure we included that community instead of turning our backs on them like many other surrounding neighborhoods have done. Overall, we wanted to create a new, self-sustaining community with the potential to include the Brooks homes. Using the ideals and goals from Blue Zones and Healthy Living Centers, we wanted to make this community as healthy as possible. 1949

ARCH 373: Arch Design and the Landscape Programs: Rhino, Photoshop, and Illustrator Location: Champaign, IL This project’s goal was to address one or more of the verbs; to move, to play, to rest, to meet. When visiting Boneyard Creek, one aspect missing was something to address its name. This design installation is located just south of E White Street. This location was chosen to help bridge the gap that E White Street creates as well as help people move through the entire park. This design includes park benches to be a place to meet, with the potential to evolve into a bus stop. The design itself was created with inspiration from the word “boneyard” Using arches in an overlapping manor created a unique canopy installation. In the evening, the arch structures are disguised. The addition of lights not only makes the space more appealing at night, but also increases safety and security.
