FROM THE EDITOR... Here we are in the middle of the year and as the winter woollies come out and the chill is upon us, I advise keeping warm, drinking buffered Vitamin C in the morning, and enjoying fleecy PJ’s and hot chocolate in the evening. I was recently sent some Green Power with Seven sea vegetables, Chlorea and Spirulina and while its taste is something to be desired it definitely seems to be adding Power to what was a previously uninspired fluey me. Invest in some. This issue brings you some temptation as Trafalgar takes us to Europe’s best food markets, Fern of Vine tells your Vinoscope’s and CT Diva shares with us her recent fabulous conservation inspiration. Keagan unfolds some exciting Industry news, offering destinations that definitely need to be placed on your bucket list, while Travel Bizz offers insight with the CEO of CT Tourism and the CEO of ASATA. CAM and Map Studio bring you some winter reads, music and Dvd’s and if you are booking an Uber to one of the exciting shows at Montecasino this June then we suggest reading the safety tips first. Here’s to a warm, happy, travel inspired June.

This month, in celebration of “International Wine Drinking Day”, which is celebrated annually from 1 January to 31 December, I decided to have some fun. On your behalf, I spent hours looking deep into my crystal wine glass, reading the sediment and steadfastly sipping (passing out intermittently) to find out what the wine you choose to drink says about you.
CHARDONNAY:
PINOT NOIR:
You think of yourself as smart, sexy and chic. Your immaculate appearance and stylish home endows you with an air of sophistication unrivalled among your peers. Flitting around town in your SUV, you effortlessly cart your teenage children around, run errands and then home to supervise the pool boy and reprimand the cook for once again overcooking the fillet mignon for your husband’s business dinner party. I am about to douse the flames of your ego. A 56 year old woman wearing the same outfit as her 16 year old daughter is not tasteful. A tough old bird dressed as a chick is still a tough old bird. Mutton. Lamb. You get where I’m going. Besides, that glass of chardonnay you’re holding is just further proof that you’re turning into your mother.
As a guy, you loathe beer and spirits and you’re not keen on red wine, but you would never be seen dead holding a glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay. Knowing that the modern woman is attracted to a man in touch with his feminine side, your bathroom cabinet is filled with every kind of ointment, moisturiser, cosmetic and eau de cologne you can fit into your shopping basket. Sporting the trendiest hair style and skinny jeans, your nails are perfectly manicured, your eyebrows tamed and nose hairs trimmed. According to your reasoning, that glass of Pinot Noir in your hand keeps your sensitivity and masculinity in perfect equilibrium, while adding to your suave look. You are bewildered as to why the women at the party keep flirting with the buff rugby players while you sit alone in the corner weeping. Now your mascara is running!
SAUVIGNON BLANC: A party animal and a people pleaser, your favourite sports include dieting, shopping and being seen in the trendiest clubs/ bars/restaurants. You love all food… well… most food… actually you only eat salad made with organic gluten-free low fat lettuce. Everything you wear from your underwear to your accessories, has a name brand – the only thing good enough to embellish your sexy curves. Your friends count on you to be the life of the party - delighting in posting the most embarrassing photos of you dancing on tables (in questionable poses) on social media. Sauvignon Blanc is your natural choice as it’s low in calories. Just please remove those ice cubes from your glass, Doll.
SWEET ROSÉ: Pink is not just your favourite colour, it’s an archetype of your unconscious mind, symbolising your Jungian journey to wholeness. Therapy sessions, yoga, rosé and your Siamese cat, Sigmund, help keep you centred in this world obsessed with materialism. The reason your friends have ceased inviting you to their braais is simple. Vegan steak is not actual steak. Also that 1.5l bottle of rosé you carry under your arm is not supposed to be drunk in one sitting - on your own. It’s called a “party pack” for a reason.

TravelMagSA - Finding Fabulous | Issue 34
CABERNET SAUVIGNON: You spend a large portion of time at the gym garbed in muscle hugging tights and “barely covering anything” tank tops which reveal those ultra-toned pecs, lats, biceps, triceps, quadriceps and other ceps – all oiled and flexed. Making sure you are within striking range of the group of fine looking young women, glowing with perspiration in the aerobics class, you stand facing the mirror, close your eyes, take a deep breath and prepare for your Academy award nominated performance. You lift the heaviest dumbbell on the rack and, and admiring your incredible physique, you proceed to do bicep curls with one arm, making sure your grimace is barely noticeable because the weight is so heavy, while your other hand holds your phone out at arm’s length to capture a selfie. There’s nothing better than taking a woman out to dinner and confidently ordering a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon (which you pronounce like a Cro-Magnon – kaber-netsave-onion), which, like cappuccino or macchiato sounds “foreign” making you sound exceedingly intelligent.
BOX WINE: Wine on tap – in your own kitchen? It’s your own version of heaven – and you can fill that coffee mug right up to the top at 7am in the morning.

LOCAL CEDAR TREE PROJECT PROVIDES CONSERVATION INSPIRATION ACROSS GENERATIONS
The 15th annual Cedar Tree Planting ceremony took place in May in the Cederberg conservancy. The event, hosted by the local Heuningvlei community, Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat and CapeNature, is one of the most highly anticipated conservation events in the Western Cape.

T
he crowd first gathered at the Backpackers Lodge in the rural hamlet of Heuningvlei where Michael Tollman, a Director of Bushmans Kloof welcomed guests, saying “we are proud and honoured to be part of this event, to be able to witness its impact on children and to make an indelible mark on conservation in the Cederberg”. Dozens of children sowed cedar tree seeds into rows of punnets before taking up their spades and jumping into the waiting convoy of 4x4’s transporting people through the Pakhuis Pass to the designated planting grove, a carefully selected rocky area and natural fire exclusion zone. CapeNature’s Executive Director Gail Cleaver-Christie and her team met the volunteers, explained the process, and handed out 200 saplings to almost 300 eco enthusiasts of all ages. The Clanwilliam Cedar Tree (Widdringtonia cedarbergensis) is an endangered conifer that is endemic to the Cederberg region. Decades of unsustainable exploitation, climate change and increased mountain fires have resulted in the decimation of the species that is now under threat of extinction. Since the first planting event in 2003, approximately 1800 young trees have been put into the ground. The cedar tree is on the Red Data List and the juvenile tree is particularly vulnerable under the continuing harsh drought conditions. TreadRight’s introduction of the Groasis Waterbox, placed protectively around the fragile saplings, has however increased its chance of survival in the arid terrain. The small round plastic contraption captures dew and rainwater, preventing evaporation and slowly releasing it onto the root, giving the plant its best chance of survival in the long-term. Bushmans Kloof, an award winning eco lodge in the heart of the Cederberg, has always been proactive regarding ethical tourism, sustainability and education. Each year, grade seven learners from Elizabethfontein Primary, a farm school, participate in a sponsored leadership camp. Bushmans Kloof financially supports numerous conservation efforts that include the collaring of the Cape Leopard, conserving the rare Clanwilliam Yellowfish, managing the proliferation of the threatened Cape Mountain Zebra, and are custodians of 130 rock art sites, some up to 10,000 years old and curated by local expert Londi Ndzima. With so many treasured paintings on the property, the reserve now holds a prestigious South African Natural Heritage Site status. Also playing a major role in cedar tree regeneration efforts and other initiatives both in Southern Africa and worldwide, is the
not-for-profit TreadRight Foundation. Established by The Travel Corporation, with documentary film maker Céline S. Cousteau (grand daughter of the legendary Jacques Cousteau) as Ambassador, TreadRight financially boosts up to 40 sustainability programmes globally and locally, includes the Amy Biehl Foundation, Pack for a Purpose and Wild Aid. CapeNature, a public entity and the conservation authority of the Western Cape, plays a major role as it generates critical awareness among learners at schools like Elizabethfontein, Elandsfontein and Grootkloof Primary and further afield in Cape Town. Through innovative educational presentations and activities, a future generation is continually exposed to various eco issues and is developing a passion and appreciation for nature and heritage. After the successful planting session on the mountain, a festive celebration took place back in the Heunigvlei valley below. 350 people ate together and watched a riveting Riel dance performance by Die Nuwe GrasKoue Trappers from Wupperthal. Founded in 2012 by former Bushmans Kloof executive chef Floris Smith, the talented troupe, now also known as the Face of Rooibos, went on to win gold at the World Championships of the Performing Arts in Los Angeles in 2015, showcasing a near-extinct Khoi and San traditional ceremonial dance form - South Africa’s oldest - on the global stage. The cedar tree planting project clearly inspires conservation efforts in nature, heritage and culture, building a legacy for generations to come. ounding at me like a luminous pink Elephant, June has still managed to catch me by surprise, and I cannot fathom where half of 2017 has gone. I have experienced more than I could ever have expected and none of what I intended when the year started. Amidst bracing the formidable winter freeze, the industry is abuzz with new and exciting news ready for your enjoyment.
“The future can only be estimated, but the present is certain.”
ZANZIBAR AMBER RESORT SIGNS THE RITZ-CARLTON ZANZIBAR
P
ennyroyal Gibraltar Limited has announced The Ritz-Carlton Zanzibar as the second hotel franchise to join the mega-development, Zanzibar Amber Resort. The intimate signing ceremony with Marriott International took place in Dubai on Wednesday, 26 April 2017 and is to debut a 90 room all-villa hotel due to open in 2021. This is an exciting prospect for Zanzibar tourism in the near future, offering a unique and stylish experience bringing The Ritz-Carlton brand to Zanzibar. Five world-leading international hotels are planned for Zanzibar Amber Resort and The Ritz-Carlton is an impressive addition to the 5-star luxury tropical community, with Anantara Zanzibar to be the first to open in 2020. Blending prestigious hospitality establishments with worldclass lifestyle facilities, the resort will encompass the first Signature Golf Course in East Africa, designed by Ernie Els, a deep-water marina, Aqua Park, international polo club and super yacht facilities. “We have been very selective in our partnerships with international hospitality brands and believe Marriott International and The Ritz-Carlton will add increasing value to the resort,” explains Saleh Said, Director of Zanzibar Amber Resort. “The core goal is to boost tourism in Zanzibar and eradicate poverty but in order to do that we need to build a tourist destination that is renowned globally. Aligning with well-established brands that already have recognition around the world is just the start of the bigger picture.”

WELL-KNOWN CAPE TOWN HOTEL GETS THE MARRIOTT TOUCH
B
ringing its superior service and world-class amenities to the South African travel market, Marriott International revealed the conversion of Cape Town’s popular African Pride Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa into a Marriott branded hotel to be known as the Cape Town Marriott Hotel Crystal Towers. The rollout of the conversion means new décor – a look and style that reflects Marriott Hotel’s appreciation of its guest identity: achievers with an appreciation of a work-life balance. “The hotel interiors tap into the need for places to work that offer easy connectivity, while at the same time providing a variety of spaces for relaxation and enjoyment,” says the hotel’s General Manager, Carolyn Jones. “The hotel lobby, the Greatroom, has been redecorated, as have the Orah Bar & Lounge and the Acara Pool Bar & Terrace. The spaces are ideal for networking, working and having fun.”
Implementing the new brand also means that the well-known Towers Restaurant will soon have a new menu, to be designed by recently-appointed Executive Chef, Henrico Grobbelaar, a leading chef with a dynamic career in the local food industry and a following among food-lovers. The restaurant’s fresh approach will tie in with the Marriott standards while still offering the flavours its loyal guests have come to know.
KILLER VIEWS AND CHAMPAGNE CULTURE COMBINE AT TIME SQUARE’S ALTITUDE
A
t the very pinnacle of Sun International’s multi-million rand Time Square development is Altitude, which opened to the public on 1 April 2017. An unexpected urban sanctuary of panoramic views, Champaign culture, vibrant entertainment and an exquisite rooftop setting. Within this rooftop restaurant lies The Lobby Room, a space for private celebrations and supper clubs in Vegas-style fashion. The Lobby Room, which literally floats on water, offers the ultimate VVIP experience. “Cape Town and Vegas meet Menlyn at Altitude. Lazy summer afternoons and champagne at sunset on an expansive deck, under African skies, Altitude delivers, until now, an unprecedented experience in Menlyn. Exclusive cocktails; premium vodkas, whisky and gin, and the finest champagne collection based within a Champagne Theatre complement the breath-taking view and killer entertainment line-up,” says Altitude’s Damian Michael. Altitude is one of 18 restaurants and upmarket bars, all unique in concept and character that will be available to explore at Time Square. Comprising South Africa’s largest and most advanced casino, as well as an 8 500 seat arena to open in November this year and a five star hotel to open in March 2018, Time Square represents Sun International’s largest investment in a casino development in 15 years. With Tshwane’s first casino and second fivestar hotel, Time Square also hails the start of a new era in entertainment and hospitality in Tshwane.

CHANGING FACE OF TOURISM ENVER DUMINY, CEO, CAPE TOWN TOURISM:
“The tourism landscape is changing; new interests are emerging and we’re coming of age into an exciting world where visions are becoming reality. As destinations reinvent themselves to stay relevant, we’re providing value upon added value for visitors, ensuring that growth in the sector continues. What you see and experience this year in destination will be completely different from what you see and how you experience it in twenty years’ time.”
There are three areas that will dramatically alter the face of tourism in the years to come: HALAAL-FRIENDLY TOURISM
THE RISE OF THE SMME
According to MastercardCrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index, Muslim visitor arrivals at destinations (globally) were estimated to be 117 million in 2015, and are projected to grow to 168 million by 2020. South Africa is ideally positioned to attract a higher share of this segment. Cape Town Tourism is engaging with CrescentRating and HalalTrip to tap into this lucrative market, given that Cape Town, with its substantial Muslim community is well-placed to encourage this sector of tourism.
It is estimated that within 20 years, 90 percent of all companies in SA will be SMMEs. Within the tourism sector, this is encouraging for emerging entrepreneurs, particularly those from an informal business environment. Smaller operators are able to act in agile response to niche demands, providing a fresh take on tourism for visitors. More than tourism, these SMMEs are often communitydriven, so the benefits are direct rather than tickling down. This will revolutionise how visitors encounter destinations all year round, helping to counteract seasonality, a rapidly diminishing concept in a country where the gap between winter and summer seems to be narrowing.
LARGE DEVELOPMENTS AND INVESTOR CONFIDENCE The opening of Zeitz MOCAA in the Silo District of the V&A Waterfront in the latter part of 2017 gives a hint of things to come: the grand vision that has resulted in this development has shown that great ideas, vision and investor confidence will all aid in driving tourism, through the creation of attractions and experiences that add value to an already-rich foundation. The snowball of investment: as the demand increases, so hotels are developed and infrastructure is improved, allowing for greater capacity for more visitors, over and over.

GOOD NEWS FROM WORLD TRAVEL MARKET AFRICA
T
he Good news is that the research released at the recent WTMA 2017 by Grant Thornton and Reed Exhibitions points to growing opportunities for outbound travel in South Africa, with much of the growth coming from intra-Africa leisure travel.
Otto de Vries, the CEO of ASATA says that outbound travel has traditionally not been well tracked, but this research is the first step to enhancing the insights ASATA members have around the patterns of leisure travel by South Africans. He adds, “As part of ASATA’s approved strategy for 2017 / 2018, they are commissioning a Travel Market Index Report to provide members with insight into South African traveller behavior, and are encouraging all companies involved in the business of outbound travel to participate so that proper intelligence can be shared for the benefit of all.” The research indicates increasing opportunities for outbound travel from South Africans, driven predominantly by the growing wealthy and middle classes. Gillian Saunders, deputy CEO Grant Thornton, says South Africans in general are not
adventurous travellers, and tend to travel to the same destinations which are affordable and are not big bookers of independent travel. “The opportunities lie in showing South African travellers that there are new and different opportunities for travel worldwide other than their current destinations of travel. We are however affected by exchange rates, the current economic climate and visa restrictions that are contribute to making it a challenge for South Africans to travel overseas.” Otto indicates that this is a great opportunity for South Africa’s travel trade to guide South African travellers and grow the market by providing professional service and on-the-ground destination knowledge so that they can Travel with Peace of Mind. According to Grant Thornton, South Africa’s total outbound travel market was set at 5,5m travellers in 2016 for all forms of travel; of that amount only an estimated 300,000 travellers travel for leisure internationally. “As a travel industry, we have to work together to grow the market so that more South African travellers have an opportunity to experience their own country as tourists, and the many destinations that are welcoming South Africans to their shores,” concludes Otto. Grant Thornton and Reed Exhibitions’ research indicates those key drivers of outbound travel to be connectivity to markets and products, the cost of travel, a culture of overseas travel and ease of travel and booking.

UBER APP
STAYING SAFE
WITH UBER!
U
ber’s mission is to help people - everywhere and everyone. They started in 2009 aiming to solve a simple problem - how do you get a ride at the touch of a button? Six years and over two billion trips later, they’ve started tackling an even greater challenge: reducing congestion and pollution in our cities by getting more people into fewer cars. The Uber network is now available in over 475 cities in over 75 countries spanning six continents. To request a ride, users must download the free application for Android, iPhone, Blackberry 7, or register for Uber at www.uber.com/go Uber, the ridesharing app, values the safety of riders and driver-partners before, during and after every trip and this is why Uber continually improves their safety features, the world over. On the driver side, driver-partners and their vehicles are prescreened, empowering riders with the knowledge that they are being transported in quality and vetted vehicles by responsible drivers. But there are also things that riders can do to ensure their safety. Riders are urged to follow these safety tips: Know your ride: Riders should always take the time to review the safety features available to them in the app, remember Uber rides can only be requested through the Uber app, so users should never accept street hail solicitations from those claiming to be with Uber. When riders are ready to request a ride, it is important for them to avoid spending unnecessary time outside alone with their phone in their hand. Instead, it best for them to wait indoors until the app shows their driver has arrived. Know your driver: When a driver accepts a rider’s request, the rider is able to see the driver’s first name, photo, license plate number, type of vehicle as well as the vehicle colour. You’ll be able to see this from within the app itself – on the map. The rider should always make sure that those match before they enter the vehicle and ensure they ask for the drivers name when they open the door.
Sharing Trip Details: Uber’s technology has made it possible for all trips to be tracked using GPS. While en route the rider is able to monitor their own trip in the app as well as share their Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) with their loved ones. This will help friends and family keep track of where they are on the trip and they can do this without even downloading the Uber app! In-app Help: The tool is designed to help riders get a prompt response to their queries in the shortest time possible. The support system can be accessed by navigating to the “Help’’ section on the menu, which helps riders and driver-partners alike to communicate their concerns they might have during a trip and get an instant response. Follow Intuition: When using Uber the rider should be aware of their surroundings, if they feel like something’s not right they should trust their instincts and use their best judgement. Riders should be cautious when sharing any personal information and should always confirm that the driver-partner is in fact the one they saw on the app, and if they ever feel they’re in an emergency situation, they are advised to alert the local emergency services immediately. There’s no need for riders to share their phone number or other contact information with their driver. If a rider and driver need to contact each other, the Uber app automatically anonymizes both phone numbers to protect everyone’s privacy. Give Feedback: Riders should always give feedback on how their trip went. This helps improve the Uber experience for everyone, maintain a high quality service and provide accountability. Uber has a 24/7 global support team which reviews the feedback and follows up with appropriate action regarding reports of conduct that violates the Community Guidelines. Uber constantly develops new technologies to ensure safety before, during, and after every ride which was not previously possible. Uber is committed to continuously educating riders and driver-partners on how to use the technology, by providing tips to improve safety.

TIME OUT MERCADO, LISBON
RASPAIL MARKET, PARIS
A relative newcomer on the European market scene, Lisbon’s Time Out Mercado is a unique concept from the eponymous ‘what’s on’ magazine. Harnessing its journalists’ local knowledge of great food suppliers and traders, it curated a selection of the finest Portugal has to offer and set them up under the roof of a historic market hall on the edge of Lisbon’s seafront. With an emphasis on street food dishes rather than produce, you can find Portuguese seafood classics and pastries galore plus international favourites like burgers and pizza.
Located in the upscale area of Saint Germain on Paris’ Left Bank, Marche Raspail is a traditional open-air market on Tuesdays and Fridays, with an organic-only version on Sundays. It has been one of the French Capital’s favourites for freshly grown produce since it opened in 1920. With over fifty traders selling everything from fruit and vegetables to meat, flowers, and wine, Raspail Organic Market, offers all the quintessentially French produce you would want.
BOROUGH MARKET, LONDON As London’s oldest and most beloved food market, Borough Market (by London Bridge) is steeped in heritage and esteem and it’s easy to understand why. Most of the traders are also the farmers who reared, baked or harvested the produce they’re selling. From British butchers like the Ginger Pig to Italian cheesemakers, expect the finest international food and wines at Borough Market’s stalls and surrounding shops.
MERCADO DE LA RIBERA, BILBAO Spain’s famous Mercado de la Ribera is in the picturesque Basque city of Bilbao on the right bank of the Nervión River. Spanning an incredible 10,000 square metres, it’s Europe’s largest covered market and houses a gastronomically impressive selection of Northern Spain’s finest fish, vegetables, jamon and pinxtos (tiny Spanish bar snacks). Perhaps one of the most beautiful markets on the list, Mercado de la Ribera features striking Art Deco design with stunning stained glass windows.
MARKTHAL, ROTTERDAM A work of architectural wonder, Rotterdam’s recently built Martkhal sits underneath an arch of stylish, contemporary flats. A feast for the eyes and the taste buds, the colourful market features almost 100 stalls, shops, and lively bars. Alongside local food from the Netherlands, you can also source great global cuisine including from everything from sushi to Sicilian pasta, Moroccan spices and Greek dolmades.
Visit these top European food markets on an unforgettable trip with Trafalgar. Priced from R37 100 per person sharing enjoy two iconic European cities.
