Dear L.M., red-headed heroine of the Anne of Green Gables books written by L.M. Montgomery (my favorite book series). The book follows Anne’s childhood starting from age eleven in mid-19th century

smart, articulate, ambitious character and her propensity for ending up in awkward situations. Above all, she is loyal, funny, and creative, and her way of narrating and thinking has become intertwined with my own over the years.

Despite having grown up as an unwanted orphan, starved of love and opportunity, she wins the hearts of an old couple who instantly spot her kindness and intelligence and gradually fall in love with her personality. The eternal charm of the book is the theme of love that Anne both gives and receives in her girlhood as she journeys through her childhood, learning lessons, developing interests, and making mistakes along the way. Despite her trials and failures in her youth, she never ceases to be hopeful and loving to those around her. This is the theme that I have brought out in Anne’s personal mark.

delicate design of the swirls inside the circle and the muted pink color choice speak more personally to her delicate, girly persona. The braided design around the border symbolizes her iconic braided hairstyle that she wears throughout childhood, but also ties together the design of a mark that is intended to resemble an artifact of girlhood, like a precious piece of jewelry that reminds the viewer of their own coming-of-age years. Anne Shirley has always been a personal hero of mine for her unyielding insistence on pursuing softness and love she displays throughout her growing-up years.
