Reggio Emilia Elementary

This childcare center seeks to enrich the lives of students and teachers through spatial ideas that enrich the principles of Reggio Emilia. The teaching principles of Reggio Emilia emphasize children's independence, community, and experimentation. Being situated on the south loop of Chicago on the river's edge is an impactful site that holds a heavy history. Each classroom is located along this atrium allowing for access and visibility throughout the school. Each classroom has a form that is malleable that can change with the needs of students and teachers through thick walls that allow for displaying art, reading, private education moments, and play. These thickened walls that prevail in each classroom allow teachers to have a unique experience in each room that can change depending on their children.

Archive

Observatory Hill gets its name from the Leader McCormick Observatory that sits atop its peak. Housed in the basement of the archive are thousands of photographic plates that have yet to be digitalized and cataloged. These photographic plates are vital to the practice of astronomy today. The Astronomy archive design displayed below seeks to give these photographic plates a distinguished place for their study, care, and display.

Transit Groove Rest Station

Studio Location Program AIA VIrginia Prize Competition

Public toilets have historically prioritized utility over user experience, often resulting in dark and uninviting spaces. The Transit Grove Rest Station challenges this paradigm at Alexandria's King Street transportation hub, where Amtrak, Metro, and bus services converge without a unified center. The design introduces an inclusive facility that serves as both an essential amenity and a deliberate moment of pause within the plaza's dynamic pedestrian flows. The form for each unit was made using a 36'’ x 36'’ square that was divided into 9 parts. From there, four units were removed for a public seating and garden area. One last square was removed from the remaining L shape to create a standalone private bathroom that is handicap accessible. The bar that remains houses gender inclusive stalls with multiple family stalls and a maintenance room. This modular design creates two distinct forms in the middle of the plaza that can anchor the pedestrian traffic and create rest zones.

Vicenza Sketching

Studio Professor Location Vicenza Program

Inez Robels and Luis Pancorbo

Vicenza, Italy

The Vicenza sketching program offered at the University of Virginia teaches students to sketch for six weeks in the summer. Throughout this course students learn about Palladio and other Italian architects and artists. At each historical landmark students sketch their surroundings to learn further through the process of sketching.
