t was a long, crazy winter for many of us, which makes getting outdoors this spring and summer that much sweeter. Whether you have acres of outdoor greenery or an urban terrace to outfit, the happy trend this season is to bring the indoors outside – extending your living spaces seamlessly. Your outdoor space is not just a peaceful place of contemplation, but a place to entertain, to dine and to relax with friends and family. To bring a sense of “living room” outside, think about adding some of the comfort elements that make your home lovely on the inside.
1
Outdoor carpets can add a pop of color and pattern while defining a seating or dining area. They are designed to withstand the elements (although you probably want to store them away during the harshest winter months), yet would look at home indoors. Comfortable seating is key, too; a cozy gathering spot to chat draws everyone together. Just make sure you have some side tables upon which to rest your drinks – even a scattering of ceramic drum tables or polished log stumps are handy for gettogethers or quiet moments with your morning coffee. Good lighting is always important in any setting. Add inexpensive, evening magic to your garden space with string lights swagged on a pergola or roof edge. Solar lanterns add glowing charm to the outdoors, whether tucked under a tree branch or highlighting plants from a shepherd’s hook. The beauty of solar, of course, is not worrying about having electricity nearby – they come on automatically at dusk and turn off at dawn. Choices in colors, designs and shapes vary widely now, unlike earlier iterations of solar lighting.

Sun & Fun If dining al fresco is a favorite pastime in the summer, trays are a great way to corral and carry dinner accoutrements – from glassware to platters of roasted corn. The newest designs in trays make it easy to choose something that will work anywhere. Whether wood, metal, enamelware, melamine or sturdy rattan, a good tray or two is essential to outdoor living. A great trend today is all of the new looks in melamine. This is not your grandmother’s melamine: it’s beautiful and sturdy, and not at all “plasticky” like the vintage goods. It comes in colorful designs borrowed from Portuguese and Italian ceramics (fun to mix and match patterns), and in sophisticated woodgrain or marble designs. All of it is wonderful to use outside or in, as it’s easy to carry, unbreakable and dishwasher-safe (just don’t put it in the microwave). To go along with your melamine tableware, there are also lots of great new offerings in acrylic drinkware – another perfect choice for outdoor entertaining (especially if you’re worried about kids or sloppy uncles dropping glasses on the deck or patio).
1 2
Tying it all together are gorgeous textiles – from fun pillows covered with indoor/outdoor fabrics (the newest trends show bright colors and bold graphics), to table linens. Easy-care vinyl placemats or treated tablecloths can add spice and texture to your dining table (mix up the tones with cotton napkins). Have throws available when nights get a little chillier – an easy-care, outdoor option is Turkish towels (or foutas) that can drape across the back of each dining or lounge chair, giving guests a lightweight, cotton blanket to wrap up in if needed. All you need to complete the picture is a patio firepit and plenty of marshmallows.

n the home, in the yard and in the community, gardening is a growing trend for Americans of all ages and genders. According to the latest National Gardening Survey by Garden Research, more than three-quarters of U.S. households are involved in some form of gardening. Gardening is now regarded as “cool” – especially among the 18-to-34-year-old crowd, including guys. “From small beginnings with a succulent here and a houseplant there, the under-35s are now truly engaged in the full range of gardening activities,” says industry analyst Ian Baldwin, who participated in the survey.
2
What is it about gardening that is so attractive? For one thing, gardening in all of its many forms gets us connected back to nature. In this digital age, many of us are spending the greater part of our days inside; getting outside and into the garden connects us back to our “Mothers” – Earth and Nature. By growing our own vegetables, fruits and herbs, gardening is also a way to eat healthier and fresher. Even in small outdoor spaces, raised beds and containers enable us to grow more in less space.
4
3
For many who garden, especially the younger demographic, gardening is also viewed as a way save the Earth. Garden Media Group’s “2019 Garden Trends Report” indicates that this is being done in several ways: by creating “pollinator gardens” and cultivating plants that attract bees and other good insects; by designing yards and landscapes with native plants that are sustainable, lowcare, and “naturalistic” and by composting plant and food waste for adding nutrients back into the soil.

Although succulents and houseplants have made a comeback in interior décor, they are not the only things being grown indoors. Today, the term “Kitchen Garden” takes on a whole new meaning because, quite literally, edible plants are being grown within the kitchen rather than in a garden just outside the kitchen door. These include edible flowers, herbs, microgreens and even miniature veggies – allowing many of us to extend our growing season and have fresh, homegrown foods year-round.

Gardening Gifts
H
ere are some suggestions for fun and practical gardening items to consider purchasing for yourself or as a present for a family member or friend: • Garden Tools: Quality hand tools such as trowels, cultivators and pruning shears are must-haves. Watering cans are a basic – one for indoors and one for outdoors. A sturdy tool bag keeps tools and equipment together and is easy to carry throughout the garden. • Planters and Plant Pots: With more gardening being done in containers –

both indoors and outside – decorative planters and pots add visual interest and expand the gardening space. • Gardening Fashion Accessories: Sturdy gardening or work gloves are essential for protecting hands. Visors shade eyes, and wide-brimmed hats help protect face and skin from the sun. Aprons with pockets are handy for holding tools, plant markers, string, etc., as well as for protecting clothing. • Garden Décor: Signs, swings, lan-
terns, wind chimes and other decorative objects add style to outdoor spaces. • Wildlife Attracters: Birdfeeders, birdhouses, birdbaths, and bee nesters attract interesting wildlife and essential pollinators to the garden. • Grow Kits: Get the garden started with kits that come complete with a container, seeds and instructions. Such kits are particularly ideal for the novice gardener or for establishing your “kitchen garden.”

Spruce Up Your Outdoor Space Here are 10 ways to add beauty and functionality to the exterior areas of a home. Compiled by Lisa McIntire
1. Lanterns. Outdoor spaces are often in use both night and day. Garden lanterns combine beauty and function to light up paths, patios and outdoor parties. If you have concerns about using candles, there are terrific options in LED solar-powered garden lanterns. Illumination has never been easier! 2. Statues. Rain or shine, in any season, garden statues add interest to outdoor spaces. Whether you are looking for a classic figure, a serene Buddha or a whimsical garden frog, there is a garden statue just right for your space. “Night Of Discovery” aluminum-and-glass garden lantern.
“Large Garden Buddha” with patina finish.
3. Bird Feeders. Decorate your garden and help our feathered friends at the same time. Bird feeders attract beautiful wildlife to the area and are especially appreciated by birds during the winter months. 4. Planters. A quick and easy way to dress up the garden, patio or front home entrance is to incorporate planters. With so many styles and sizes to choose from, the creative possibilities are endless. Plants can be easily switched out for seasonal updates to your container garden display.
“Rustic Wagon” planter stand.
5. Hose Guards. A common complaint about watering gardens with a hose is that it can damage delicate plants as it is dragged along outdoors. Trip hazards can also be a concern. Using hose guards to keep those pesky hoses in place while watering plants is a pragmatic and decorative solution. “Gossiping Birds” birdfeeder with brasstoned birds on aluminum branch. 16 • PRESENT presentmag.com

6. Hose Holders. Practical can be beautiful, especially when you need storage for your garden hose. Hose holders are a stylish option to keep hoses organized and out of the way. Wall-mounted versions are great space savers. 7. Wind Chimes. Easy to attach to eaves, trees or garden crooks, wind chimes add movement as well as a beautiful, relaxing sound to any area of the garden.
“Frog and Harp” aluminum-tube wind chime garden sculpture.
8. Outdoor Wall Plaques. If you have a plain garden wall or fence that needs some interest, wall plaques add instant style. Sun and moon celestial styles are a classic choice, while birds are also popular. Mix and match sizes and styles on the same wall for an outdoor gallery wall.
“Rising Sun” aluminum wall plaque.
9. Garden Stakes and Signs. For a quick way to provide style to your outdoor space, consider garden stakes. Stakes can easily be stuck into a garden plot or lawn and come in so many varieties – welcome signs, pinwheels, whimsical critters … the choices are endless. 10. Thermometers. A practical garden thermometer can also add decorative flair. Classic wall-mounted tube thermometers come in many designs. Another stylish option with a practical twist is the wall-mounted clock-thermometer. These decorative pieces have separate dials for the time and the temperature.
“Floral Pinwheel” sheet-metal garden stake.

Get Out and Play! From inflatable games to obstacle-course sets, the newest outdoor toys offer fun activities for all! By Kate Tanner
P
lay. What is it? The definition of play is “activity engaged in for enjoyment and recreation, especially by children.” It is interesting to note that when used as a noun, the word “children” is added. But play is truly for all ages, especially when you take it outdoors! Have you ever noticed how engaging a toy or other plaything becomes when an adult is added into the play arena? It doesn’t matter whether it is a ball, bike or bucket of sand. When adults get into the action with kids and their toys, the activity often gets even more lively. Take scooters, for instance. Popular with youngsters, they come in a variety of styles and sizes for all ages, including adults. One of our customers bought adult scooters so that she and her husband could scoot with their kids. She later returned for two more adult scooters. The idea, it seems, caught on with her neighbors, who began monopolizing her and her husband’s scooters when the children were out scooting. Now the entire neighborhood turns out for scooter events and rides on the weekends.
Perfect not only just for the backyard but for on-the-go-fun while at the park, in grandma’s yard or wherever one finds a nice plot of grass is the “American Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course Race Set,” which provides many different ways to set up courses for agility training, jump training, hurdle challenges, target games and more.
The Latest Inflatables
What’s going to be all the rage in parks and yards this year? Inflatable toys and games. Inflatable pool floats and beach balls have been around for a long time, but now inflatables move on land with giant blow-up balls that kids can roll around, race or run with, or even wear like a “bumper suit!” A favorite is the Bright Lights BBOP Balls with LED lights – the more movement one does, the brighter the LED lights become. Other blow-up games you might see around – such as a giant bowling game or ring toss – can engage the whole family as they make up moves and challenges. Adults also appreciate the safety of these inflatable HearthSong confetti-filled “Bright Lights Buddy Bounce toys and how tired the children Outdoor Play (BBOP) Balls” with LED lights. are at the end of an outing.
Fitness for Fun Another trend that is on the rise is to turn a backyard into the neighborhood hangout – but not a hangout where kids sit around doing nothing. This is a hangout where youngsters have fun while strengthening their bodies and challenging themselves. Backyard ball games of all sorts have long been a tradition with children and families. But now, inspired by such challenge programs as “American Ninja Warrior,” backyards are being transformed into similar-type courses that test strength, agility and endurance. There are rope lines with rings and bars to swing from one to the other, and zip lines that can be strung up between sturdy trees. These build confidence, strength and athleticism. Of course, safety must also always be a factor.
While many outdoor toys and games are fun for kids by themselves or with friends, getting the whole family involved together makes it even more fun for all. After all, play is for kids of all ages!
Toy expert Kate Tanner, owner of Kidstop Toys & Books and Babystop/Inside Kidstop in Scottsdale, AZ, is a strong proponent of fun and play for the whole family. Visit her shop and read the blog at kidstoptoys.com.

Present-Day Etiquette
Let’s Have a Tea Party When hosting or invited to an afternoon tea, there are time-honored rituals and rules of etiquette that should be observed. By Jacqueline Gillam Fairchild
T
ea parties, once the stuff of little girls’ pretend play and genteel ladies’ afternoon get-togethers, are making a comeback as a fun way to relax and enjoy the company of friends. Afternoon tea is a special time in an elegant setting. Whether held in a tea room or at a private home, in all cases it means your dining event will be fussy over stark. It will be pretty over modern, and it will be leisurely. Tea time is not rushed. So, plan to allow enough time in your schedule. If you must leave early, do it discreetly. Remember, a tea is based on tradition and is rather proper.
Invitations. How lovely is it to get an invitation in the mail for tea time? It says this is not just a casual get-together. An actual invitation is not necessary, it is simply nicer. We all love email; but if you are hosting a tea, send an invitation.
Juliska “Country Estate” Main House Delft Blue 2-qt. teapot.
RSVP. Whether your invitation says to respond or not, you should take the time and let your host/hostess know whether or not you are coming so they can plan appropriately. A telephone response is proper. If you get a voicemail, leave a message and follow up with an email. A text is not proper or enough – and possibly might be missed by the host/hostess. Be Timely. Arrive on time. This is not a cocktail party where you do not want to be the first one to appear, or an open house where whenever you arrive is fine. Tea time has a starting time. Honor it. What to Wear. Many people go to tea in casual wear, but there is no such thing as overdressing. Proper dressing for tea time does not inRoyal Albert “100 Years” threetier cake stand with Bouquet, Rose Blush and Golden Rose designs. 26 • PRESENT presentmag.com

clude jeans or T-shirts. Needless to say, more casual than that is not even a consideration. If you would like to wear a hat to tea that complements your outfit, this would not only be appropriate, but says to your host/hostess that you understand tea time. The hat is meant to be an accessory and is left on the entire time. Look elegant, and you will help make a special occasion even more special. The Menu. Tea time does not mean simply a pot of tea. Tea time is a meal. “Cream tea” does not imply putting cream in your tea; it implies your meal will be smaller. You will have a scone with cream and jam, and possibly one or two tiny other
Enjoy a Cuppa! Tea is being embraced by more consumers of all ages. Consider a gift of specialty teas when shopping for something special. bites. “High tea” is not a time of day, it is the size of your meal. It is a complete meal and always includes a warm scone with cream and jam. Scones are your starter, so to speak, because they are often Spode “Kingsley” bone-china 7-oz. tea served warm, while cups with saucers, and 12-oz. mug. the majority of your tea meal is served cold. It is proper to cut your scone in half and eat it with your hands. You can then expect tiny savory sandwiches (cucumber for sure), and often a miniature salad or a cup of soup, or both.
1
Small Sweets. Tea time also means sweets, but not slices of pie or slabs of chocolate cake. More than likely there will be tiny fruit tarts, petit fours, or overly decorated mini cupcakes. You can almost guarantee there will be something lemon; specifically, lemon curd, because this is very British, and tea time is British. Many of your sweets will be small enough to pick up with your hands and move to your plate. If they are bite size, you may eat them without a fork. Tea. Often when invited to tea, there will be an assortment of hot teas to enjoy. A black tea can be sweetened, or cream can be put in your tea. The expression “MIF” means milk in first. “TIF” means tea in first. Most people are served a cup of tea and then add their cream or sweetener. Fruity or chocolate teas are considered dessert teas and are usually enjoyed with the dessert part of your meal. If you are not a tea drinker, you might opt for the fruity tea. It would not be proper to request coffee. If you are given a cup of tea and do not care for it, simply set it aside or ignore it. It would not be polite to say anything. Manners. The pinky up is just a fanciful action that is not really proper. A cup should be held delicately and not grasped with two hands. You should eat slowly, realizing that this is a social event and that your meal is intended to last through polite conversation. Thank You. After the tea, it is expected that you send a proper thank-you note, not an email. Even if your event was at a restaurant or tea room, remember that your host/hostess had to take the time to coordinate the event.

Makers & Shakers
Golden Girls Founded by Peggy Hedgpeth in 1989, Golden Rabbit enamelware helps make everyday entertaining effortless.
G
olden Rabbit product is handcrafted in Indonesia from thick-gauge steel and Belgium’s finest porcelain enamel – creating oven-to-table cookware, dinnerware and serveware that won’t warp or scratch and is naturally non-stick with a long-lasting finish. Because each piece is both beautiful and durable, Golden Rabbit enamelware can be enjoyed elegantly at a wedding or casually at the dining room table.
Q: What did you do professionally before starting Golden Rabbit? A: I graduated from college with a degree in accounting and got my CPA. Back then, people were not hiring women for accounting positions, so I got a job with the government as an IRS agent. I soon moved up and became an International IRS agent out of Washington, DC. During this time, I also pursued an MBA in international business from George Washington University. After 10 years of shuffling papers, I resigned and set up a high-end retail garden shop in the early ’80s when garden stores were still “seed and feed.” The store was a success and my first venture into the gift industry. I left the store behind to my business partner and ventured to Indonesia with the goal of setting up a wholesale teak-furniture business. It was on this first trip to Indonesia while shopping in one of the local food markets that I discovered these wonderful enamel basins the Balinese were using to display their exotic fruits and vegetables.

Q: What made you decide to launch Golden Rabbit? A: While I knew very little about enamelware, I knew I’d found something quite special on that trip and would figure the rest out along the way. What I learned was that all enamelware is not created equal. There is a huge difference between flimsy camping tinware that warps and rusts, and the traditional artisan-crafted bowl I’d discovered along the roadside just months before in Bali. Once I began using a thick, sturdy, carbon-steel enamelware bowl rimmed in stainless steel, I experienced the difference between disposable and quality craftsmanship. With this knowledge, my commitment to bringing superior enamelware to the marketplace was born. Q: Why do you manufacture in Indonesia? A: We have worked together with a team of Indonesian craftsmen and engineers for many years to perfect processes and to procure the finest materials, while holding to high standards and time-honored techniques. We employ more than 800 skilled

Makers & Shakers people at the factory in eastern Java. In addition to at least 10 emails a day, I travel to the factory at least once a year, and the factory’s people travel to meet with us in the U.S. annually as well. I prefer doing business in Indonesia over China, as there is a stronger sense of understanding how manufacturing and market development go hand in hand. Also, the quality of raw material going into our production is much better than the Chinese-sourced materials. This ends up with a better product.
Skilled factory workers in Indonesia creating Golden Rabbit bowls.
Q: How many pieces and styles did you initially launch with, and about how many are in the line today? A: I initially launched with just six shapes in two colorways. All six shapes are still in the line today, but the colors have changed dramatically. We now carry 600-plus pieces in more than 40 shapes and 11 colors, including a multitude of specific designs such as seafood-themed items. Q: What is your favorite Golden Rabbit piece? A: My favorite piece is the baking pan. It is very similar to a Pyrex dish, but I made an improvement to the mold and made the pan an inch deeper. It always bugged me that other dishes were too shallow and boiled over in the oven. This was my chance to improve on an age-old cooking accessory. Q: What is your sister Kathy’s role in the company, and when did she join Golden Rabbit? A: Kathy Williams is our go-to for tradeshow sales and product development. She is very astute at knowing what is on the market and the retail prices at which product is moving. Being my sister, she has been around since the beginning, but she became actively involved about six years into the business.
Golden Rabbit “Peter Rabbit” children’s gift set includes 8½" plate, 14-oz. bowl and 4-oz. mug.
Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever given? A: Last year, I flew Laura Blunt, who is our director of marketing, and Kathy to Indonesia with me. It was an experience of a lifetime for both of them, and I enjoyed having them along on a trip I usually make by myself. We visited Bali and Java in a quick 10 days, capped by 40-plus hours of travel time on each end. Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received? A: By taking Laura and Kathy with me, I could see Indonesia again through new eyes. This was my gift to me.
Golden Rabbit 10½-qt. roasting pan measures 4" deep.
Q: What are the top three things on your bucket list? A: Number one: I love to travel and have been all over Indonesia and China, but have never been to England. Strange, huh? Number two: I’d like to meet John Hardy, a famous jewelry designer and conservationist who lives in Bali. Number three: I’d love to take a weeklong meditation yoga retreat and just get away from it all!

A
ccording to the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Fun Facts” about Father’s Day – taking place on June 16 this year – the idea of Father’s Day was conceived more than a century ago by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, WA. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart – a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. 3 June 19 was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration in 1910. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.

Tips for Selecting a Backpack
W
hen purchasing a backpack, the American Occupational Therapy Association recommends trying on backpacks ahead of time and considering the following: • Appropriate Size. Make sure the height of the backpack extends from approximately two inches below the shoulder blades to waist level, or slightly above the waist. • Shoulders. Backpacks should have well-padded shoulder straps that can be worn on both shoulders to distribute the weight of its contents and to provide even balance. • Reduce Risk. Backpacks that are too heavy or worn incorrectly can contribute to discomfort, fatigue, muscle soreness and musculoskeletal pain, especially in the lower back. A loaded backpack should never weigh more than 10% of total body weight.

2019’s Hottest Hue W
hat’s on trend in giftwear this season? Almost anything in Pantone’s Color of the Year – Living Coral. As Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, observes: “Pantone’s Living Coral is the perfect color for spring and summer gifts, as it immediately speaks of the warmth that we expect in those seasons. It’s an affable, comforting and nurturing color, one that encourages you to reach out and touch it.” In fashion and accessories, according to Pantone, Living Coral inspires experimentation and playful expression in both men’s and women’s street and runway styles. The warm shade suggests comfort and positivity in simple color stories, but becomes more explorative and effervescent in patterns, textures and even monochrome looks. An appealing accent shade, Living Coral provides a striking contrast across the color spectrum. When used as a bold statement in settings and décor, Living Coral fosters immersive experiences and interactive spaces that are tied to a playful spirit, according to Pantone. As a color linked to tactility and human connection, Living Coral in shag rugs, cozy blankets and lush upholsteries creates a warm, comforting and nurturing feeling in the home. With its ebullient nature, Living Coral adds a dramatic pop of color to any room setting – whether in decorative accessories, in tabletop or on the wall. Living Coral pairs well with marine blues and earthy greens, as well as with sunny yellows and even some hot reds – making it the perfect warmweather hue for a variety of giftware, personal accessories and home accents.
