When? Founded in 1939
Why? “At HKS, we see architecture as a means. A means to enhance the human experience. We think of structures as places where humans experience emotion. Where they achieve creative breakthroughs. There they save lives and comfort one another. Where performance is both performed and witnessed. Where memories occur. Architecture is a backdrop to all of these experiences. Our philosophy is to make it great, every single time.
6. CLIENT Information
Functional - A functional organizational structure is one in which an organization is divided into different departments or functional work activities - A level of top managers typically oversees the work carried out in each functional area. - Functional organizations contain specialized units that report to a single authority, usually called top management - Referred to as functional units or areas, these specialized units contain personnel with various but related skills grouped by similarities - Top management is responsible for coordinating the efforts of each unit and meshing them together into a cohesive whole - Since employees grow within their field, this leads to the development of specialists, especially in technical fields - The goal of functional structure is to put all the human and informational resources necessary for a single activity in one place - Sub-organization leaders are experts both in their field and in the resources available, which allows each unit to reach its greatest potential and prevents over-use of limited resources - Specialized training and involved management mean that standout employees are quickly recognized and placed where they will be most effective and managers are always on the lookout for helpful skills and ideas - While the flow of communication within a department is expedient, communication between departments and synchronization of work and project completion is more difficult to manage

COncept Statement Approximately seventy percent of the Earth is comprised of the ocean, a vast ecosystem teeming with biodiversity. Constantly changing and evolving, the ocean and its inhabitants are greatly influenced by the alternating tides. The tides are a global phenomenon, their influence felt across every continent, nation, and person, connecting us all. Much like the tides, HKS Architects has a prominent global influence and is a leader in the architecture industry. Likewise, Miami is a center of global exchange and a city of diverse cultures. With this in mind, the design for this project was inspired by the concept “Tides. The design will showcase the dynamic nature of HKS, their global influence, diverse team members and cliental, as well as their dedication to sustainability. The concept will be demonstrated through an open floorplan with connected and flexible work zones, the use of sustainable materials, ample views to the outdoors, a color palette featuring tones and hues found in the surrounding landscape, and organic forms and shapes. The goal of the design is to foster connectivity, creativity, and comfort in the workplace, allowing its users to innovate and grow as leaders in the world of design.

SOLUTION Statement Upon entering the reception, visitors are given their first glimpse into the overall space. Surrounded by natural textures and colors, any anxieties they might have are soothed and their curiousity grows as they are greeted by the water feature focal wall. Just beyond the focal wall, they catch a glimpse of the first floor, including the monumental staircase that connects the two floors. As they continue into the space they are further greeted by natural materials and colors, natural lighting and expansive views of the city, and curvelinear shapes and forms that call to mind the tides of the ocean. Furniture selections and arrangements encourage focus and collaboration. Natural elements offer connection with nature, creating restorative spaces. Functional furniture and spaces optimize focus and productivity. The design succeeds in representing HKS Architects’ prominent global influence and fosters connectivity, creativity, and comfort in the workplace, allowing its users to innovate and grow as leaders in the world of design.
