Precendent Studies
Year: 2011
Summary: The goal of this design was to create a
memorable experience for patients by distancing the design as much as possible from typical clinic designs. In place of the traditional, a flexible partition is used to separate the reception and waiting room from the rest of the office. This partition is derived from the shape of an acoustic wave, paying homage to the surgeon's specialty. Another distinct design feature is laser cut acrylic glass panels that feature the Hippocratic Oath. The use of natural materials, namely wood, provide warmth to this contemporary design. The use of form not only provides visual interest but also achieves the goal of creating a unique space unlike that of other medical offices.
Furniture Plan for ORL Clinic
Design Implications: - The use of natural materials brings warmth into the space and helps eliminate the association of medical offices as cold and sterile. - Branding for medical practitioners can be achieved in unique and impactful ways through the use of form. By abstracting the professional's specialty, one can create an interesting and aesthetically pleasing solution. - If space allows, the use of multiple waiting rooms allows patients choice in experience. "... To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art if they desire to learn it without fee and covenant; to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken an oath according to the medical law, but no one else..."

Clinic Reception
Size: 2700 sf Year: 2015
Precendent Studies
Summary: The overall goal of this project was to redesign an existing clinic and create an atmosphere of hope, warmth, openness, trust, goodwill, communication, and positivity. The project called for the design of four areas: the entrance, waiting room, kids area, and clinic. The use of warm colors and playful shapes evoke a sense of trust and friendliness. In order to facilitate openness and communication, the design of the waiting room rejects the outdated model of rows of uncomfortable chairs that all face the same direction. The waiting room is instead arranged similarly to a dining room with a communal table and chairs. Here, patients can easily interact with one another if they so choose. The use of glass doors and clear wayfinding in the corridor further promotes the idea of openness and transparency and eases the anxiety associated with walking past rows and rows of doors and not knowing where to go. The design succeeds in not only providing a functional solution but also providing a comforting atmosphere to patients who might otherwise be overwhelmed and anxious.
Children's Play Area
Waiting Area
Space Diagram for Clinic
Design Implications: - Avoid the outdated waiting room model of uncomfortable rows of seating. Provide seating that facilitates interaction between patients which can alleviate anxiety. - If pleasant, integrate the surrounding landscape into the interior through the use of either live or artificial greenery. Studies have linked greenery and other natural elements to faster and better quality healing in patients. - Provide visual interest in the waiting room to entertain and alleviate anxiety in patients while waiting. This can be achieved through the use of interesting shapes, forms, and colors.

Patient Perspective
Negative Associations Design Implications: - Offer comfortable and varied seating options for patients as they wait. - Ensure that there is ample seating or provide options to leave the waiting room. - If windows are not available for the waiting room, provide other natural elements such as a water feature or greenery to bring the outdoors in.
Visual Collage
- Provide distrations such as music, reading materials, or television to shorten patients' perception of wait time.
"Don't ever forget that you're a citizen of this world, and there are things you can do to lift the
human spirit
things that are easy, things that are free, things that you can do every day. Civility, respect, kindness, character." - Aaron Sorkin
Patient Perspective
Positive Associations Design Implications: - Ensure staff comfort and accessibility so that they are more upbeat and motivated to provide better care. - If appropriate, provide the option for patients to get a snack while they wait. - Provide decor that demonstrates professionalism and cleanliness while also promoting comfort and wellbeing.
" There simply is no pill that can replace
human connection
There is no pharmacy that can fill the need for compassionate interaction with others. There is no panacea. The anser to
human suffering
is both within us and between us." - Dr. Joanne Cacciatore

Climate: Tallahassee has a humid subtropical climate, with long summers and short, mild winters, as well as drier springs and autumns.
Design Implications: - The site is located in a largely residential area. Consider patient privacy while entering and within the clinic. - Views to the outdoors has both calming and healing effects. Prioritize windows for areas where stakeholders will spend large amounts of time. - The site is located nearby several retailers. Provide a private entry for staff to access nearby amenties without interacting with patients while on break.

- Consider the seasonal shifts and theri effects on the interior. During the summer, harsh sunlight through windows can potentially damage sensitive materials and irritate users. Heavy rainfall can lead to wet floors so incorporate slip/water resistant flooring.

Project Goals - To design a space in which patients, staff, family members, caretakers, and all other visitors feel welcome, comfortable, assured, and uplifted during, and even after, their visits.
+
Concept Goals
- To design a space that is accessible for all users through clear wayfinding, sensible circulation paths, and the careful implementation of ADA standards. - To design a space that improves staff performance and satisfaction by space planning for efficiency and selecting materials, finishes, and furniture that will enhance their comfort. - To design a space that will stand the test of time and serve its community for years to come by selecting high quality materials and finishes. - To design a space that ensures the health and safety of all of its users by selecting materials and finishes that are antimicrobial, nonabsorbant, and easy to clean to minimize the spread of infection.

is especially crucial to healthcare providers as our
society continues to shift toward advanced technologies. To provide exceptional care and expedite the healing process, healthcare providers must not neglect human connection but instead make it their central focus. The design for Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare Physician Partners - Southwood is informed by the neccessity of human interaction with the goal of encouraging connections between patients, staff, caretakers, and any other individuals who visit the space. Sociopetal furniture arrangements, clear wayfinding, open space planning, and an uplifting color palette will facilitate these interactions. Users of the space will find comfort, encouragement, assurance, and hope while within the space.
18
Design Statement Guided by the notion of human connectivity and interaction, the design for Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare Physician Partners - Southwood succeeds in creating an environment that offers comfort, encouragement, assurance, and hope while elevating the experiences of both visitors and staff. Careful consideration of circulation paths, sightlines, wayfinding, materials, and finishes led to the design of a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The layout of the space
+
Concept Goals
designates two seperate zones: visitor and staff. The seperation of these zones eliminates unnecessary and inefficient traffic and accommodates clear circulation paths for all users. The centralized location of the Nurses' Station provides sightlines into both the Waiting Rooms and Exam Rooms, allowing staff to readily anticipate patient needs and provide optimal care. Clear wayfinding in the form of color coding and naming of Exam Rooms eliminate confusion and provide visitors with a sense of independence and comfort as they navigate the clinic. All selections of furniture, materials, and finishes were evaluated for their resiliency, antimicrobial properties, and ease of cleaning. These high quality selections will stand the test of time and ensure that users are able to utilize them for years to come. Sociopetal furniture arrangements and colorful palette ensure that the space does not feel sterile and unwelcoming. The combination of all of these elements create a design that puts the individual first and encourages connectivity and community.
