Our free trail bus will help you get round our popular trail more easily and is a great way to visit outlying venues. So leave the et the free Tr ail org tf crowds behind, save yourself time and energy by hopping on the bus!

Welcome to our award winning Kirkcudbright

We very much hope that your visit to Kirkcudbright and our thirteenth trail will be an enjoyable one, and that if you are a resident you find something different to see and do as we have some new venues and new artists this year. A warm welcome to visitors both new and old. We are confident that you will enjoy our friendly trail and find lots to see and do. There are some new artists and venues and once again we have the free bus from Harbour Square to get you to the locations which are furthest from the centre. If this is your first visit then may we take this opportunity to say that you will find plenty to do to fill your day, come early and perhaps plan to come back for a second day. 2015 was a great year for us, May found Pauline and Vivien travelling down to the BBC at Media City, Salford where they were presented with the Epic Award for Scotland, for the Best Voluntary Art event in the country. They met other groups and were able to promote our town. Needless to say, we

were thrilled to bits that the trail had received such recognition. Then in November we became winners of The Scottish Thistle Award for The Best Visitor Attraction in Southwest Scotland and extending North including Glasgow. A great year indeed and our trail is as good and varied as ever, so enjoy the artwork on display in our 100 venues, wander round the open spaces, partake of some lovely refreshments and chat to our welcoming participants. Of course you will not miss the fabulous Kelpie maquettes on loan to us from Falkirk Council for which we are most grateful. You will have a wonderful time and we say this every year, remember to bring your camera!

Boats, boats... and ships as well! Last year we could not cut the fish out fast enough! To say that they just swam away is not an exaggeration. If anything they were more popular than the beach huts and they provided some great public art displays along the trail. Being stopped in the street and asked what the trail theme is this year and then ‘when can I have a blank to start painting?’, is just the greatest feeling. It shows that Kirkcudbright is living up to its name of Artists’ Town. We do receive great interest from schools, townsfolk, clubs and visitors which

reinforces the all inclusive philosophy of our Trail. So put your thinking caps on. Pick up a blank from the Summer Festivities Charity Shop. They are free, or make / knit / sew etc your own. Go down to our working Harbour, look at the Marina ...Be inspired. Become a Kirkcudbright Artist, join in the fun.

THE BLACK PEARL!

We can only describe our visit to The Black Pearl as a twinning experience extraordinaire!

June finds us travelling once again to sign on with the Pirate Crew of the Black Pearl. New Brighton is the home of this magical 40 ft driftwood ship and we will have two fun filled days running free workshops with our twinned pirate event. We are really looking forward to promoting Kirkcudbright and our Trail. So,

we will soon be loading the van with our treasures and running off to sea! Do visit the Black Pearl if you go down to Merseyside. The pirates are not as fearsome as they look. Beach hut venue 6 on the trail will bring you up to date with our adventure.

Rotary Young Artists' Competition Our trail is pleased to work with Kirkcudbright Rotary Cub and Kirkcudbright 2000 to foster a love of art in children. The competition is now in its third year and we are pleased that so many take part. Work is entered by five local primary schools and Kirkcudbright Academy S1 and S2 students. You will be able to view their outstanding work at the Cochran Hall (venue 32) and in the Tolbooth Art Centre Stairway (venue 35). Art Specialists work with the children in school to produce the entries and trophies, prizes and certificates are awarded in all three categories. These are our future artists and Trail participants and we are venue 32&35 delighted they produce such magnificent work.

Trail Gardens Gardens have long been an important part of our trail. We embrace all forms of art and hope that the gardens and their gardeners will inspire you. A number of them will be selling plants and cuttings. Unusual plants can be found at the Limes and Ellenbank and with a free trail bus for tired feet they are well worth visiting. Others such as Adele’s, Greengate and Maurice Halliday’s are hidden down closes and lanes and come as wonderful surprises.

Take a look at the Daar lodge garden and see the sculptures there. Washing line art at Venue 52 always draws a crowd and this year finds a garden within this garden. Intrigued? then make sure you visit. Charity fundraisers open their gardens; the Kirkcudbright swimming pool will be benefitting from Mary Newton’s Limes Cafe in a spectacular setting, a perfect place for lunch.

Vote Of Thanks

Our thanks to all of you who have helped in any way with our trail and our other projects throughout our busy year. We very much value the time and help you give us. Your encouragement makes everything we do worthwhile. Thanks also to the friendly visitors and their kind comments and feedback on our Facebook page. We would not have been given the Epic Award for Scotland or won the Scottish Regional Thistle Award for Best Visitor Attraction without our lovely friendly participants, helpers and visitors, so thank you all and keep returning to Scotland’s Artists’ Town. Best wishes!
