WELCOME TO THE RUGBY The Festival returns to Rugby town centre from Saturday 24 June until Sunday 16 July, fresh from its success at the Coventry and Warwickshire Tourism and Culture Awards 2016, where it won the Culture Award. We are also delighted to announce that this year’s festival has been extended by a week to include ‘The Festival on the Close’ - a public arts festival featuring world-class artists performing in a specially built 1,000 seater Performance Arena which will be situated in the historic setting of The Close at Rugby School – all part of Rugby School’s 450th anniversary celebrations!. Take time to look through the guide – there’s plenty inside. Indulge yourself, try something different, socialise, laugh, discover, enjoy, celebrate, learn and have fun. Many of the events are free but where booking is required you will need to book early to avoid disappointment! This exhibition is a celebration of all things musical in Rugby Borough. We explore past musicians, choirs and orchestras in the town through photographs, programmes and instruments from the museum’s social history collections. Also on display: Rugby Philharmonic Choir’s 150th Anniversary. From its early beginnings to present day this display features programmes, photographs and other important memorabilia from Rugby Philharmonic Choir members charting the choir’s 150-year history. n Units of Possibility: The Reknit Revolution

Designer and maker Amy Twigger Holroyd invites us into the creative world of reknitting. Discover the inherit ‘tinkerability’ of the knitted structure and treat each individual stitch as a unit of possibility. On display will be exhibits demonstrating reknitting techniques, along with instructional materials for those who wish to have a go. The Festival on The Close is a public arts festival featuring world-class artists performing in our specially built 1,000 seater Performance Arena which will be situated in the historic setting of The Close at Rugby School. Our headline acts include original X Factor stars G4, Laura Mvula and a comedy night with a stellar line up including the hilarious Simon Evans. Daytime events are built around a programme of educational enrichment workshops. The Festival on The Close has over 200 creative workshops for children from across the region running throughout the week – from flamenco dancing to live sports commentary; from creative writing to sculpture; from fashion to stage combat. Internationally renowned organist David Briggs brings a spine-chilling late night screening of the classic gothic horror Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde to Rugby with live organ improvised accompaniment. Prepare to be spooked in this atmospheric setting of Rugby School’s famous Chapel.

n Piano Recital by Oxana Shevchenko Tuesday 27 June

Please join us for this very special concert featuring international acclaimed pianist Oxana Shevchencko playing a range of music from Beethoven to Stravinski. Oxana Shevchenko is a graduate of the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory, where she studied with Elena Kuznetsova and Sergey Kuznetsov. She is currently studying with Benedetto Lupo at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.

John Agard was born and educated in Guyana and came to Britain in 1977. He has won numerous awards internationally for his poetry and has also been poet in residence at the BBC and at the Greenwich Maritime Museum.

n Laura Mvula with special guest Passport to Stockholm Thursday 29 June Innovative British singer songwriter, two time Mercury Prize nominee and two time MOBO award winner, Laura Mvula grew up in Birmingham. Mvula first sang in church and later with all female acapella group Black Voices. By 2008 she had formed and was composing for her own jazz/neo-soul outfit Judyshouse. Mvula has also directed various choirs.

Jubilate - a choral concert by the choir of Rugby School to celebrate its 450th anniversary. This programme of choral classics will include works by Byrd, Brahms, Mozart, Monteverdi, Ireland and others as well as Jubilate by Simon Johnson - organist of St Paul’s Cathedral, commissioned to celebrate the 450th anniversary.

n Voces8 Twilight Concert Thursday 29 June

Join sensational vocal ensemble Voces8 in a late night concert to bring the 2017 Festival on the Close to a magical conclusion. Families are invited to join us for a DIY drive in cinema experience! We’ll be making cardboard cars and then parking up to watch a selection of short films. With a tuneful thread running throughout, Melody Makers is full of rhythms, rhymes, and sing-along- songs. Featuring musical journeys with father and son in the folky Cookie-Tin Banjo, and Ichi, the world’s greatest one-man-band, teaches us the names of all the animals in Japanese in his new music video, Hippo 47. The Rugby Town Guides take residents and visitors on a journey of discovery through the town centre, revealing fascinating facts about the history of Rugby and the borough. The free tours start at Rugby Visitor Centre and visit the Webb Ellis Football Museum, the Webb Ellis Statue, and The Queen’s Gates at Rugby School’s The Close, finishing at the entrance to the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

Join us to celebrate the opening of our two exciting summer shows. In our gallery space you can explore the creative world of reknitting with Amy Twigger Holroyd in ‘Units of Possibility: The Reknit Revolution’. A “Never to Be Missed” event is our Spire Summer Festival in aid of the restoration of the Grade 2 listed, beautiful spire of St Marie’s Church, which is a famous local landmark. God of Carnage is the story of two married couples who meet for the first time shortly after their respective sons have a nasty schoolyard tangle. Michael and Veronica, whose son’s teeth were knocked out with a stick, invite Alan and Annette, whose son did the knocking, to their home to settle matters such as who will pay for new teeth. But any attempt at having a civilized discussion about whose child is responsible for the fight, and how the parents may have influenced such destructive behaviour, quickly devolves into finger-pointing, name-calling, stomping around and throwing things. And that’s before they break out the rum!

n ‘The Twits’

Roald Dahl created some truly revolting characters in his time but surely few can compare with the noxiousness of Mr and Mrs Twit. This adaptation by David Wood is a marvellous mix of singing, dancing, slapstick, audience participation, shouting and beards. Bored with playing schoolkiddish tricks on one another, the grotesque, satisfyingly revolting couple Mr and Mrs Twit turn their attentions to capturing and training a family of monkeys, the Mugglewumps, for a circus act. The monkeys’ cruel incarceration in a cage is avenged when the birds trick the Twits into believing the world has turned upside-down. Come and witness these truly ghastly, infamous book characters come to life in our Rugby Festival of Culture production of The Twits.

Ian Pittaway, historical music performer on stage and TV, will take you on a journey through the songs, tunes and stories of the middle ages. Hear a Spanish song about a miraculous pork chop; 13th century English songs about the weather (what else?); a Christmas hit for Mike Oldfield by a medieval monk who wore brass tacks in his underpants; medieval dances; the crossover between folk music and medieval music; and much more, sung and played on harp, bray harp, gittern, lute and koboz.
