Villa design surrounded by ancient trees

For me, architecture is a poetic existence, and I love it because it combines art and technology, whimsical and calm thinking. In the process of contacting it, I increasingly find that it brings great power to urban and people. The world we want to change should first start from the architecture that everyone needs to contact with. As an architect assistant with a background in historical preservation, I have seen a wide range of challenges brought by rapid urban transformation in nowadays China, which put many cities into a field of urban, social and economic contrasts. Driven by my desire to become an architect, who is of design expertise while respecting urban fabrics, history, nature, I am strongly motivated to pursue a master’s degree of architecture.

Trigger | Art Activity Center Art activity center that activates historical district Site: Beijing Tutor: Bing Wang, Li Chen Individual Work Spring 2017 Chongwai No. 6 is located in the second ring of southeast Beijing, at the northeast corner of the Temple of Heaven, belonging to the cultural preservation construction control zone. It is adjacent to Guangqumen Inner Street in the north, Chongwenmenwai Street in the west, Fahuasi Street in the south, and Xingfu Street in the east, covering an area of about 0.8 square kilometers. The main house here was built in the 1940s to the 1970s. It is now a demolition detention area. There are nine illegal buildings of about 1,600 square meters in the area. The current situation of land use is crowded, poor construction quality, backward municipal conditions, poor environmental sanitation, high voices from the people, and strong desire for renovation. A small number of district-level cultural relics and nine protected courtyards are distributed in the site. This project is located in an old historical district in Beijing. It is concerned with questions: whether art can activate urban space, the relationship between art and people and the old district. To be an artistic activity center for tourists and residents. The design strategy takes the crowd as the starting point, designs different space functions for people of different ages and different needs, and uses artistic techniques to attract people to come to achieve the purpose of activating urban space and community vitality. It is hoped that important buildings in the historical district can be valued and protected, and culture can be spread.

Art History & City Development

Site Mapping

This design project uses the method of art to intervene in the urban space to act as a trigger for Beijing's historical districts to activate the old city. The development of art is long, and various art forms have played a role in architecture and urban space. From the 13th century Renaissance to Baroque Rococo, Neoclassicism and Romanticism, to modern art and contemporary art, the study of art history is inseparable from the development of the city.

The Temple of Heaven Antique City located at No. 91 Fahuasi Street is not only full of antique folk customs, but also modern fashion. The antique jewelry placed along the antique street forms a unique tourist landscape. Although the antique street is not long, it is full of vitality.

Autumn Garden Villa design surrounded by ancient trees Site: Beijing Tutor: Ying Qi, Quanbao Ma Individual Work Fall 2015

The project is located in the historical scenic area of Shichahai, Beijing, surrounded by courtyard houses. The site is planned to be converted into a private residence. There is an old tree with a crown radius of 10 meters. The household consists of eight family members, including two elderly people, a couple and their son and daughter, as well as the children of the daughter. The design is inspired by the embrace of ancient trees. Shaped like a cloister, the villa brings the residents a poetic walk, outlines the backyard, and allows people to fully relate to the ancient trees and embrace nature. The theme of this design is the sense of surrounding, so that the building embraces the occupants and ancient trees like an intimate hug, transforming daily activities into richer experiences and more exciting moments. The space of the tea room is independent, close to the ancient trees, and meets the interaction and sight communication with the ancient trees; the semi-basement is raised and used as the dance practice classroom for the daughter. The functional partition is clear, so that the activity flow lines of the young and the old do not cross. And the division of public and private spaces is apparent. The gray space at the entrance of the residence can be used for family activities. Close to the restaurant and swimming pool, it breaks the boundaries between indoor and outdoor, and promotes communication.

Mapping

The project is located in the historical area of Shichahai, Beijing, surrounded by courtyard houses, and there are historical buildings such as Drum Tower and Prince Gong Mansion around the site. The design site is an area with a length of 45 meters and a width of 35 meters. There is an ancient tree with a canopy radius of ten meters in the area. A private villa is planned to be built here.

Design element collage analysis

Volume analysis chart

A villa is planned to be built next to the old tree in the site.

By surrounding the tree like a semi-circle, the building has a close relationship with the ancient tree.

The building has a Y shape and separates out into two courtyards, allowing more visual communication with the trees.

Establishing the second floor of the building, the roof panels of the building tend to be inward, which increases the sense of violation of the courtyard.

The second-floor volume retreats, so that the room is with a good view of the tree and the entrance courtyard.

The blue dashed line is the activity streamline for the elderly, and the red dashed line is for the young, with clear regional separation.

THE LINK | Factory Design Promote cultural exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan Site: Xiamen & Taiwan Tutor: Tao Wang, Yifan Yang Individual Work Fall 2020 Taiwan is located on the continental shelf on the southeast coast of mainland China, facing Fujian Province to the west across the Taiwan Strait. After the first Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, China signed the Shimonoseki Treaty, and Taiwan Island was colonized by Japan for nearly 50 years. After 1949, the Kuomintang government retreated to Taiwan in the defeat of the civil war, and the two sides of the strait have been divided. As the saying goes: "People are a reflection of their environment." Historical reasons have led to cultural, economic, political, legal, and lifestyle differences between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan is separated from the mainland Strait with few connections. Not having joined the RECP, Taiwan today is in the position of an "economic island" and is being marginalized by the Asia-Pacific economy. The mainland is an important trading area for Taiwan. Located in the coastal area of Xiamen, the design is a large high-tech transportation factory floating on the sea, for purposes of promoting the logistics transportation and cargo supply between the mainland and Taiwan, simplifying the import and export trade process between the mainland and Taiwan, and enabling the two sides to actively conduct trade. Many robotic arms are used internally for item transfer, realizing a semi-automatic operation mode. At the same time, the submarine space is equipped with a marine freshwater research laboratory, a fruit exhibition for visitors from both sides of the strait, and an undersea restaurant. Visitors can receive the made hexagonal sky lanterns from the factory space, leave the blessing words in it, and put it on the sea surface to drift and shine at night.

Integrate New with the Old Hongjialou Cathedral area renovation design Site: Jinan, Shandong Tutor: Ying Qi, Qipeng Mu Group Work: Urban design, group leader & Individual Work: Architecture design Spring 2018

Built in 1905, the Hongjialou Cathedral is a twin-tower Gothic building, and the largest Catholic church in Jinan and North China, also known as one of the three famous Catholic churches in China. It occupies an important position in modern Chinese religious architecture. The whole building is majestic, with grand beauty and solemnity. The space inside the church is large and shocking, with windows on all sides and good internal light. In the afternoon, the sunlight passes through, creating a warm environment that matches the sense of rituals of religious places, giving people a sense of spiritual purification. The architecture of the Chinese and Western walls has unique characteristics. The Hongjialou Cathedral is indeed the most beautiful building of western style in Jinan. The construction craftsmanship of the year was very exquisite and strong, but after a century of vicissitudes, today the building has begun to have problems, large or small, one after another. Cracks also appeared in the outer wall and began to tilt to the sides. The Church Landscape Park is located on the north and east sides surrounding the Cathedral. The overall design concept is to take advantage of the original site landscape on the north side of the church to create an open park and cultural buildings enclosing the church. The different entrances and exits of the park welcome people from different directions. The wooden platform creates a sense of envelopment and warmth in the church, increases opportunities for people to communicate with each other, draws closer the relationship between people and the church, and enhances the spiritual image of the church in the city.

Temple of Heaven The Great Sacrifice in Winter Solstice Beijing Creative Map Contest Site: Beijing Tutor: Yulong Chen Individual Work Fall 2017 The creative design of the map reflects Beijing culture, and the area represented is the Temple of Heaven. From a narrative perspective, it shows the ceremony process of the Qing emperor’s offering material sacrifices to heaven in the day of winter solstice. The upper part of the picture is a map of the Temple of Heaven, showing the emperor’s walking route during the Great Sacrifice. The lower part is the text describing the daily rituals of five days ahead of the winter solstice ceremony. The ancient Chinese believed that the winter solstice is "the end of the four seasons", and "on the winter solstice, one shade will hide underneath, and the sun will rise up." From the day of the winter solstice, "a yang energy begins from the earth", that is, the so-called "one yang energy begins". The "Book of Rites" said: "In this month, the sun has run twelve full circles; the moon has past the twelve sequences; the star returns to the sky; the number will end; and the year will start again.” So, the ancients chose the "winter solstice" day to hold the ceremony. In the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Zhou Gongfu became the king, "making rituals and making music", stipulating that "winter solstice day sacrifices the heaven and the earth on the hill". Later, many dynasties in ancient China took the winter solstice day as the auspicious period, and held the ceremony on this day. The ceremony held every year on this day is called the " The Great Sacrifice in Winter Solstice ".
