Bathroom Project Carolyn Pottebaum Residential I
Client Introduction THE BOULDER THE BETTER Liam and Olivia Taylor are a married couple in their mid 40s who recently relocated to a contemporary home in Boulder, Colorado. On weekdays, Liam and Olivia are very busy and like to use a food delivery service but on weekends, they like to cook together and try new recipes. The Taylors did not have much time to find a house that met everything on their wish list before the move, so they are looking to update their kitchen and bath to something more suitable to their styles. Olivia likes a shabby-chic vibe, neutrals with pops of color and patterns, while Liam prefers mixed materials and favors function over style. Since moving to Colorado, they’ve become more interested in sustainable design and hope to incorporate that into their remodeling project. They both would like to have their kitchen and bath spaces be a blend of their tastes to create a design that they can settle into and enjoy for many years to come.
CHALLENGE Budget: $30,000 includes materials only Materials to be included: Floor, Lighting, Hardware, Countertops, Cabinetry, Fixtures, Paint, Toilet, Shower, Tub, Washer/Dryer Dislikes: Would like stall shower and separate soaking tub; closet space too large for space (has walk-in in bedroom already). Likes: Large vanity area, beautiful mountain view from south window. Sustainable design and mixed materials to be included. RESTRICTIONS Wants: Finished attic located above bath. Good lighting near vanity and laundry to be included; may use stackable washer and dryer. May move door to master bedroom anywhere along the north wall. Closets 2 and 3 may be incorporated into design but one must remain unchanged. Clients want window on south wall to be enlarged. Window is 44” high x 43” wide, casing is 2 1/2” wide, sill is 36” above the finished floor. The window is currently double-hung. The window may be altered and moved anywhere on the south wall. Closet 1 and linen closet may be removed or altered. With the exception of the wall with closets 2 and 3, the footprint may not be altered. Master bedroom door must remain a hinged door.
DESIGN DIRECTION The direction we decided on for the bathroom was to mirror the kitchen but make sure it also has it’s own style. We made the window on the south wall bigger and included shades inset into it so they can open or close them just by turning a dial, we also added a window on the west wall to include all the natural daylight we can. . We brought the tile in from the kitchen and kept with that overall aesthetic of a modern shabby chic along with the mixed materials and sustainability. The terrazzo we used for the bathroom has awards for sustainability and so does the washer and dryer. We also picked the terrazzo because it has those colors to compliment the tile and is still light enough to keep the feel of the bathroom open. We included the same shelves to bring in the shabby chic again and make sure there is ample storage along with the cabinet on the vanity wall. The soaking bath is in with the shower to save on space and to soak up that view.
Demolition Plan Closet 3 will be taken down to widen the shower/ bath area. Closet 1 will be removed to make room for toilet. Not to be re added because of closet in bedroom. Linen will be taken down to put washer/ dryer in and shelfs added to make up for linen closet being removed.
