Education is an ongoing, organic process that changes as the needs of the student and employers evolve. Flexibility is a key tool to ensure that the learning spaces adapt to a variety of teaching methods and student learning preferences. NEXT University believes in the interdependency of three key elements in the design of a successful learning environment: pedagogy, technology and space. The new spaces within NEXT HUB must adequately combine these three elements and be agile enough to support the diversity of content while integrating individual and classroom technology tools. These spaces should be agile and easily transition between different modes of learning such as whole group discussion, group breakouts, and traditional presentations and promote interaction with peers both inside and outside class.

The vision is to provide a balance of public and private spaces where students can work alone or with others, whether inside or outside the class. The spaces should transition to support social interactions, individual study, group collaboration, team project work, faculty interaction and community events.

REQUIREMENTS The project area within the NEXT HUB’s new academic building is a total of 10,685 usable SF. • Active Learning Classroom - for 24 students (1) • Small Seminar Classrooms/meeting rooms for 12 students (2) • Makerspace: Fabrication 20-24 students (1) • Computer Lab 24 people (1) • Large Active Multi-Purpose Classroom for 50-60 students (1) • Immersive Learning VR/AR/MR/AI Area (1) • In-Between Learning Spaces (4) • Learning Commons (1) • Locker/Copy Resource Center (2 – 1 per floor) • Tutoring Center with (3) open collaborative spaces and (3) enclosed private offices/1:1 meeting spaces • Faculty Open Connection Hub (1) • Faculty Private Offices (3) • Hourly Childcare (1) • Mother’s Room (1) • Wild Card Space (1)

Concept Space is a main construct that the client wanted to see along with technology. My concept is merging organic and man-made elements to make a unified space. The use of nature and sunsets to reiterate the space and openness that is brought into this project. We used the colors to make it feel more fun and playful to let imagination come out. The architecture and lines of the skyscrapers and trees is used to bring in the growth and making the people who use the space feel like they can reach for the sky. The merging of these two concepts means that we can allow for the technology to aid in education while still feeling “free with the outdoors around us.

DEMOGRAPHICS - RESEARCH NEXT University is a cutting-edge higher education learning institution located in Washington, DC. http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20160420-how-nature-is-good-for-our-health-and-happiness

Being in nature has often been linked to feeling awe, which in turn, is linked to numerous cognitive benefits, such as being more generous, feeling more creative, lowering stress levels, and even boosting your immune system. https://education.cu-portland.edu/blog/classroom-resources/welcoming-classrooms-better-students/

“When I’m relaxed, I’m more ready to learn” The administration of NEXT University has a vision to increase their reach into a large urban population to provide an alternative place for students of all ages to gather, connect, explore and engage in lifelong learning experiences. NEXT HUB would serve several purposes. It would be a place for students who are enrolled in online coursework to gather and engage with others doing the same. It would help enable adult learners with small children hoping to further their education yet might not be able to afford or juggle childcare. It would be an educational opportunity for individuals currently in the workforce to gain additional knowledge, skills and certifications to continuously upskill and stay relevant in the job market. The faculty have exceptional professional backgrounds but are most known for their dedication to guiding students toward their personalized learning goals.
