Internet usage of the elderly

Some of the functions that middle-aged and elderly people use when they go online daily, including information acquisition, communication, entertainment. In general, the application of the Internet by middle-aged and elderly people is still focused on communication and information acquisition. However, the data also reveals that some convenient functions that are exclusive to young people in people’s impressions are gradually integrated into the lives of middle-aged and elderly people, such as watching videos, Mobile payment, mobile navigation, taxi service, WeChat applet, etc.

Data Sources The focus group interviews came from 100 middle-aged and elderly people in Harbin, Beijing, Taicang, Shanghai and other places. The survey respondents came from 800 valid samples from Beijing, Xi'an, Shenyang, Chengdu, Wuhan, Baoding, Ningbo and Dongguan. There are two sources of big data: (1) TBI Tencent Browsing Index, with a sample size of 35,759,363; (2) Provided by the Himalaya Research Institute with a sample size of 20,970 surveys, and finally 800 valid samples were obtained

Conclution China is already rapidly entering an aging society. Although Xima’s elderly users are not the main customer group so far, and perhaps the current exploration and research on the elderly model cannot bring timely and objective profits, the expansion of the elderly market and the development of services and products for the elderly are an inevitable trend.

The current preliminary exploration and research on the elderly in Hima can provide experience and data for product development for elderly users when necessary in the future. It is also an attempt by Hima on the elderly model.

INTRODUCTION

An app helps you to promote the level of your emotional granularity. In addition, it can help you to understand and analyze your emotions accurately so that you can control them well. There are four modules of it, namely Emotion Post, Emotion Group, First-aid and Diary. Through these parts, you can discuss the emotional experience with others or record them, and get the help from clinical psychologists to analyze your emotions or control them better.

Feel Emotions can be mapped out on a chart modeling the range of arousal (high to low) and valence (pleasure to displeasure) that is experienced during a particular emotion.

People with high emotional granularity would be able to differentiate among very similar feelings ,such as depressed, bored, tired, and miserable

(For example, in the top right corner are the emotions with high arousal and high valence, which include excited, astonished, delighted, happy, and pleased. These emotions are all examples of positive emotions that are high in arousal)

People with low emotional granularity would clump together all positive emotion or negative emotion.

An individual with high emotional granularity would be able to discriminate between their emotions that all fall within the same level of valence and arousal, labeling their experiences with discrete emotion words exactly.

Unpleasure

Someone with low emotional granularity would report their emotions in global terms, usually of pleasure or displeasure

Why to promote the emotion granularity High-granularity people know what happen to their emotion exactly, and find out how to deal with awful feelings. Help people to solve the emotional problem in a systematic way.

They wouldn’t get mental breakdown easily when they are under pressure, and they rarely choose negative way to “self-healing”,such as alcoholism, binge eating and self-harm. It’s hard for them to get depressed and anxious. High-granularity people go to the doctor less and take less medication.

I interviewed and asked some people to fill in the questionnaire ( the people which are with the low or high level of emotional granularity ). And analysed their answers to find some pain points or opportunities about how to promote the level of emotional granulatity and help them undersdand or control their emotions better.

emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual—to help clients improve their physical and mental health. The word ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language.

As a way of helping care for and support people

We know that the auditory system of the brain is the first to fully funceffect

tion at 16 weeks, which means that you are musically receptive long before anything else. So it’s a case of first in, last out when it comes to a dementia-type breakdown of memory. The power of music, especially singing, to unlock memories and kickstart the grey matter is an increasingly key feature of dementia care. It seems to reach parts of the damaged brain in ways other forms of communication cannot.

Family care Take part in other activities

In the end, I choose Singing for the Brain. Because I notice most of their activities is about music therapy and old dementia patients. I also got the experience to live with my dementia relatives. Besides that, they have various and perfect service for the patients.

I try to participate in this tribe. But I only get the opportunity to observe the situation at the beginning of their activity. Fortunately, I find there is a lot of the video they made for recording the activity in the tribe. In most activity, I observe, in the beginning, only a few people joined in but after a while, everybody was singing along. In the process, they will sing, whistle, clap or tap their feet dance and do a various thing. It helps them, and their carers, to feel life is worthwhile. In this tribe. In this tribe, some symptoms of them are Alzheimer’s and some symptoms of them is Parkinson's disease And the therapist will try there best to reach these patients. They said “we don’t want is musicians going into a room and standing behind a music stand. They have to be proactive and stimulating in order to keep the attention of this audience.” The therapists will also engage and encourage someone with dementia to lead not just follow. Some of the patients will be the player or conductor

Be the leader

After the inspiration, I started to research some similar group in London. There are some tribes I find: Singing for the Brain, Music for Life, Lost Chord, Golden Oldies and Live Music Now.

I was recommended by the teacher the book of Oliver Sacks, which named Musicophilia.Oliver Sacks

Musicophilia Oliver Sacks

The aim of music therapy in people with dementia is broad — it seeks to address the emotions, cognitive, thoughts, and memories, the surviving “self” of the patient, to stimulate these and bring them to the fore. It aims to enrich and enlarge existence, to give freedom, stability, organization, and focus. Musical sensibility, musical emotion, and musical memory can survive long after other forms of memory have disappeared. Music of the right kind can serve to orient and anchor a patient when almost nothing else can. Besides that, he also mentions that music that helps patients with parkinsonism, for example, must have a firm rhythms character, but it need not be lyrics or intoned phrases. and interaction with a therapist. This information let me associate that some improvement that the tribe could make.

7“

RE FLE CTIO N & INITIAL INTE RVE NTIO N THINKING Through the research and the theory. I find this tribe is more like a bridge or media for people to get together, and use music to create a relaxed, and cheerful environment. It not only focuses on curing their disease but takes care of their emotion. Another important point is that they make these patients feel they are worthwhile like the conductor and the keyboard player. On the one hand, according to Oliver Sacks theory, different music rhythm would match different types of dementia patients. If the percussion could recorder the reaction of the patients. Maybe that could provide some information for the organise to adjust their music or the therapy. On the other hand, the therapist may organise these patients to hold a concert. Let them obtain some achievement as a collectivity. It will also a kind of a visible result of their effort for practising in the tribe.

THE SYMPTOMS OF DEMENTIA

Alzheimer's disease middle-stage symptoms: Increasing confusion and disorientation

– for example, getting lost,

or wandering and not knowing what time of day it is

Dementia is a term used to describe severe changes in the brain that cause memory loss. These changes also make it difficult for people to perform basic daily activities. In most people, dementia causes changes in behavior and personality.

Alzheimer’s disease

Obsessive, repetitive or impulsive behaviour

Dementia with Lewy bodies

Delusions (believing things that are untrue) or feeling paranoid and suspicious about carers or family members

Dementia affects three areas of the brain: language, memory, decision-making

such as frequent mood swings, depression and feeling increasingly anxious, frustrated or agitated

Dementia with Lewy bodies

Difficulty performing spatial tasks, such as judging distances

Vascular dementia

Seeing or hearing things that other people do not (hallucinations)

"We've found compelling evidence that musical interventions can play a health care role in settings ranging from operating rooms to family clinics. But even more importantly, we were able to document the neurochemical mechanisms by which music has an effect in four domains: management of mood, stress, immunity and as an aid to social bonding.

Music can be powerful. Studies have shown music may reduce agitation and improve behavioral issues that are common in the middle-stages of the disease. Even in the late-stages of Alzheimer's, a person may be able to tap a beat or sing lyrics to a song from childhood. Music provides a way to connect, even after verbal communication has become difficult.

Increasing confusion and disorientation Slowed movement Rigid muscles Loss of automatic movements Speech change to monotone

Slowed movement (bradykinesia). Over time, Parkinson's disease may slow your movement, making simple tasks difficult and time-consuming. Your steps may become shorter when you walk. It may be difficult to get out of a chair. You may drag your feet as you try to walk.

Rigid muscles. Muscle stiffness may occur in any part of your body. The stiff muscles can be painful and limit your range of motion.

Music can bring emotional and physical closeness. In the later stages of dementia, patients often lose the ability to share emotions with caregivers. Through music, as long as they are ambulatory, they can often dance. Dancing can lead to hugs, kisses and touching which brings security and memories. hugs

Impaired posture and balance. Your posture may become stooped, or you may have balance

problems as a result of Parkinson's disease.

Loss of automatic movements. You may have a decreased ability to perform unconscious movements, including blinking, smiling or swinging your arms when you walk. Speech changes. You may speak softly, quickly, slur or hesitate before talking. Your speech may be more of a monotone rather than with the usual inflections. Writing changes. It may become hard to write, and your writing may appear small.

Linda Maguire, lead author on the study wrote, “Musical aptitude and music appreciation are two of the last remaining abilities in patients with Alzheimer’s.” Because these two abilities remain long after other abilities have passed, music is an excellent way to reach beyond the disease and reach the person.

bonding and music therapy for dementia. At the pre-programmed tutorial, once I show the picture of straws( as the left image) to translate one of my ideas.

NERVE FI BER TANG LED I N A MASS WAY AMYLOI D PROTEI N DEPOSI TI ON Biomarker, Alzheimer's disease, neurodegeneration, ocular, eye, retina ...... Reduction of optic nerve fibers in patients with Alzheimer disease identified ..... Early Abeta accumulation (amyloid protein deposition.) and progressive synaptic loss, gliosis, and tangle

REASON FOR THE SYMPTOMS FORM Toxic changes in the brain destroy this balance. This changes may accur years, even decades. Before the first sign of dementia. Researchers believe that this process involvetwo proteins, called beta-amyloid and tau which somehow become toxic to brain. It appears that abnormal tau accumulates, eventually forming tangles inside neurons. And beta-amyliod clumps into plaques which slowly build up between neurous. As the level of amyliod reaches a tipping point. There is rapid spread of tau through out the brain.

My tutor said if I could associate this kind of straw structure with some problem from dementia patients’ brain. So at the next stage, I set out to prepare this aspect research.

The vascualar system may fail to deliver sufficient blood and nutrients to the brain. The brain may lack the glucose needed to power its activity. Chronic inflammaiton set in as microglal cells fail to clear away debris and astrocytes react to distressed microglia. Eventually, neuons lose their ability to communicate.

P R O J E C T A DY NA M I C VIDEO OF THE F L OW I N G P I G M E N T S

MATE RI A L CHO OS I N G The nerve fibres in the brain of dementia patients are somewhat tangled and broken, so I try to simulate the brains of people with dementia by some tangled or broken tube. I choose this kind of flexible tubing. Because somehow, the grain of it is just like a brain’s surface. After I spray them to white, I am going to shape them in a mass, tangled way. On the other hand, I tried to insert some cotton balls in the middle of the tube, which symbolizing protein precipitation in the brain such as beta-amyloid and tau.

I also will leave some broken pipes extend from the installation. That would symbolize the broken and loss synaptic and neuron. In addition, these broken pipes can be designed for the interaction part. When audience connect two pipe orifices , they will paly a kind of instrument sound or the words, sing from an dementia patients under an music therapy.

On the other hand, the image of this pipe entanglement is somewhat similar to the complex tubular structure at the back of the tuba. So, I also tried to shape this tangled pipe into a tubular instrument

16 “

Music produces a benign stimulus to the brains of people with dementia. When the music is playing, the different part of the brain will be activated. You can see the active part from thermal map that the brain presents Through this kind of stimulation, the music can awaken their memories and feelings to some extent. So I thought whether it is possible to project a dynamic video of the colorful pigments flowing like the thermal map on the device. When the viewer connects the tube, the video is projected on brain—like pipes.

I mp rove me nt if I have cha nce I think the way I design for interaction could improve if I still have the time. I hope I could transform it into a wind instrument. When the audience blows these pipes, these pipes would make a sound like a tuba but not it, and the shape of the pipeline also could like a flute. There is some little hole on the pipes. When people plug these hole with their fingers, the “instrument could change the pitch.

Teamwork

We were assign “living Smart theme for this exhibition. We design a series of sticker around Living together, Living on the move, Living with less, Other dreams of home, Living self-sufficiency which are the branches of "anti-Smart" theme. We use these stickers organises an activity in the Design Museum to mimic the pop-up mechanism. Firstly Let the visiter to choose one of our colours and put the colour on their shoulders. In the next step, the rest members will stick the relevant sticker on their clothes directly at different places in the museum as long as the audience walk pass him or her.

My Duty It is teamwork. I participate in the concept format and develop. Design the content of some scenes of our illustrations and made the animation of them

Sticker

Testing Why we choose the stickers Our project is inspired by parasitism in nature and advertising recommendation system in smart lives. We designed a game that simulate the recommendation system to engage the visitors, We deside to stick the relevant products stickers on the body of visitors to simulate the popup advertisements, while using different media such as video, animations and print to further explain. The project uses a slightly ironic way to show our projections and criticism of the domestic future living. At first we select 5 aspects products. The are fashine, food, home, transportation. And these products are better relatived to “anti-smart

At the beginning we made a demo which is a product to help you to remenber something. We also did some test to stick on others for the sticker size design.

LIVING TOGTHER With the growth of urban populations in the twentieth century, the question of space became a major preoccupation. In the future, people will live in a limited space, but this space can be transformed according to people's needs.

LIVING ON THE MOVE Now that our sense of home is determined in part by the availability of wi-fi and power outlets, it's safe to say that the concept of home is increasingly not confined to a physical place. Maybe the human body has stayed in some physical space, but the human spirit flies through the universe with wi-fi as the medium.

LIVING WITH LESS Today, the domestic interior is less of a closed world. We post pictures of our homes on social media and Airbnb.Maybe one day in the future, all the home equipment will become artificial intelligence, and we live with these artificial intelligence every day.

OTHER DREAMS OF HOME The notion of the ‘home of the future’ as a machine for living was an attempt to modernise domestic life, but it ignored the human need for ritual. Counter to modernist visions of progress, some designers sought to emphasise that our homes are also places of irrational and emotional needs.

LIVING SELF-SUFFICIENCY With the impact of rampant consumerism on the environment more evident than ever before, there is a new desire to find a less wasteful way to make, use and reuse household goods.

THEMES We choose 5 themes according the “Home future”. We think living smart may contain the lest five aspects, living together, Living on the move, Living with less, Other dreams of home, Living self-sufficiency. So we try to design these 5 aspect to design our products.

Game rules There is 5 color in our product represent 5 aspects of home futures. One of our member who stand beside the entrance in design musium. When the audience come, he will ask the visiter if he or her want to join our game. Then let them choose one of our color, and put the color on their shouders. In the next step the rest membes will stick relevant sticker on their clothes directly at diffrent palces in the musium as long as the audience walk pass him or her.

But in the end we think we should focus on our own theme “anti-smart.”We try toimage and exaggerate the trouble that the smart era give to us. For example, there is no privacy space in your home or people could not live without internet.

COHERENCE After we propose the concept of the themes, tutor sugested us to add the coherence in our sticker project so we try to design 5 scenes to describe the anti-smart from the 5 aspects. And cut each of them into 9 circle sticher. In this way each littel sticker could connect with the others according to the anti- smart scene

You are turning into an intelligent potato.

You probably don’t want that much

When the women come back home, every furniture will open their eyes to stare her. In the future, there may no space for people to hide their privacy in their own home.

Now, people could not live without internet. So we think maybe in the future, people will like a herdsman who will live on a“wifi-horse.

At present, with the busy life people is more and more like an numb machine. In opposition, machine is becomming more and more human with wisdom.

In this piture, people is going to be a coach potato. He just need to turn on or turn down the light then he could change the space he live. He can live with very small area acrding this device. But he will also move slightly like a caoch patato.

We are usually over recommended so much information by various artificial intelligence analyse systom. In this picture, as long as this women think an circle, there will be a lot of staff thrown to her.

This is a marriage market held at People's Park in Shanghai. Every weekend parents of unmarried adults flock to the park to trade information on their children. The standards of finding the right match is written on a piece of paper, which is then hung upon long strings among other parents' advertisements for their children. The parents walk around to see the ideal spouse on advertisements for their children .

INTRODUCTION Men and women are just like goods which are picked by parents in mariage market .They are valued according to their personal situation or background . I want to satirize the materialism by Kaiten-zushi with various ingredients on top, which is also coveniently picked by consumers. It is the various ingredients that represent various standards for picking spouse in marriage market.

What is Kaiten-zushi Kaiten-zushi is a sushi restaurant where the plates with the sushi are placed on a rotating conveyor belt or moat that winds through the restaurant and moves past every table, counter and seat. Customers may place special orders, but most simply pick their selections from a steady stream of fresh sushi moving along the conveyor belt.

can give me a chance.

3 But I still get awkward because the conversation is always about personal situation, such as job, degree and past experience. It’s like a trade of goods.

Scenario I arranged 5 blind dates for my son during Spring Festival Holidays . Every girl I find in the marriage market is from a good family background . And some of them are accountants or doctors. But I usually inform my son after I have arranged the date because I am afraid that he would reject the arrangement.

Scenario Last weekend my mom let me see one of her old friends. She only informed me the address and time. But she never told me this is a blind date. She arranged until I had arrived. So I had to go for that date. But I felt so awkward. The man in the date just came back from America with a good job in a famous foreign company. After he introduced himself , he started to ask my situation. The whole process just like a personal interview.
