Failte
The Aran Woollen Mills team and are delighted to introduce our new collection for 2023. After an unprecedented number of years of significant challenges for everyone, we are very much looking to the future with a strong collection of heritage pieces as well as some exciting new additions designed and manufactured to the highest standard in the West of Ireland.
Over the past 12 months we have expanded our production operations in Co Mayo and we will open a new manufacturing facility in Belmullet for early 2023. We have also been busy working on new developments to support our customers. We have expanded and updated our online asset library for our customers with new imagery and video content and we will launch a new website to facilitate quick and easy trade orders.
2023 sees the introduction of a wonderful new collection of products and colourways to our range. Aran Woollen Mills continues to produce 100% natural knitwear which is now critical as we face accelerated environmental challenges. As businesses and consumers, we must be more conscious about the materials we use and the products we buy. Wool in all its forms is a lifetime product which offers real sustainable credentials.
We hope you agree that our new collection is our most exciting to date and it is our wish that it will contribute as much to your success as our own.

Our heritage
Our founder Mrs Maire Hughes began weaving the story of Aran Woollen Mills in 1965. Mrs Hughes established the business to follow her passion for Irish craft, heritage and to provide employment locally in the West of Ireland.
Our home is the beautiful town of Westport, with a proud textile and knitting industry that stretches back to the 18th century. Generations of craftspeople have been inspired by the dramatic landscape that surrounds us - the majestic Croagh Patrick Mountain overlooking Clew Bay, and of course the wild Atlantic Ocean, all an indelible source of inspiration for our designs.
The 13 Hughes children spent much of their summers living and working on the Aran Islands selling sweaters and immersing themselves in Island life. The passion for heritage and craft has been ingrained in the family from an early age and this legacy lives on today within the family business.
The infinite power of the ocean has transcended the shores of Aran and Westport into our branding and design details, and each of our stitches are steeped in symbolism. Whether it is the cable stitch for good luck or the honeycomb stitch - a reward for hard work. Aran knitwear binds us to the land, customs, craft and heritage. By choosing Aran, our customers are sharing an important piece of Irish history with the world.
For three generations since that modest first step, our family business has grown to become a trusted Aran knitwear manufacturer. From Westport to the world, we are proud to see our designs and products worn internationally ensuring that our Irish heritage lives on.
New Trade Website
Linking and communicating directly in real time with our customers is of vital importance to us. We have been working on a new website that will allow our trade customers to order products online easily and view what we have in stock and expected delivery dates for stock to land in our warehouse from our production floor. The new website will provide you with easy payment options as well as pay on account options. The site will also provide customers with a full history of payments and orders too. Our aim is to make ordering products quick, seamless, and easy for our customers.

We pride ourselves on choosing 100% natural wool yarns. These include 100% Merino & Worsted wools not to mention our extraordinary Supersoft Merino wool offering a soft and luxurious finish.
Our collection also includes beautifully crafted handknit garments and accessories in 100% Merino yarn. Garments knitted in beautiful 100% wool nepped yarns, 100% Shetland lined garments and accessories all to complement the conscious wardrobe and to fit a customer’s lifestyle.
We take great pride in the quality and finish of our products. Each of our products passes through many pairs of hands from yarn cone to design and manufacturing to shipping. We ensure every consideration is taken for the quality of the process, the finish of each product and the efficient delivery of our products to our customers.
A story behind every stitch ...
Aran Woollen Mills has a truly natural and sustainable range that stands the test of time. Our products are made from natural yarns spun with a dedication that has been passed down through many generations. All of our yarns bring the wonderful natural qualities of wool to each piece.
BASKET STITCH
The Lattice or Basket stitch represents the fisherman’s basket. It is an omen of a good and plentiful catch.
DIAMOND STITCH
The Diamond stitch represents the shape of the fishing mesh, and signifies wealth and success.
IRISH MOSS STITCH
The Moss stitch is said to symbolise abundance and growth.
SUPERSOFT MERINO COLLECTION
HANDKNIT MERINO COLLECTION
Supersoft merino allows us to mix tradition with luxury to knit timeless pieces in the finest merino wool here in the West of Ireland. The yarn is soft to the touch, warm, cocooning and will truly serve the wearer through the seasons. We have added four new colours to this years collection that we know you will love.
Merino wool is a durable natural yarn which helps stabilise body temperature, is odour resistant and biodegradable. Merino is softer than regular wool and is easy to wear on the skin. We have introduced exciting new styles and colours to our 2023 collection.
Worsted wool is an Aran weight yarn that is designed with outerwear in mind. The traditional Aran Sweaters derived from worsted yarn. This yarn has kept generations of fishermen off the West Coast warm while also repelling moisture due to the high levels of naturally occurring lanolin present in the wool making it ideal for staying warm and dry while at sea.
Our Handknit collection offers iconic pieces in a lofty spun 100% Merino yarn. This beautiful craft is still been knitted as it was hundreds of years ago and our garments bear intricate stitches, each with their own story to tell.
LIFESTYLE COLLECTION
Our lifestyle range offers up an exciting mix of products with traditionally inspired yarns and blends from 100% Shetland Wool garments lined with cotton, flecked Donegal Wool to Ribbed Worsted Wool sweaters. This knitted collection provides both traditional and contemporary designs for functional everyday wear.
CABLE STITCH
The traditional Cable stitch comes in many cable variations and is said to symbolise fisherman’s ropes. It is seen as a symbol of safety and good luck for fishermen.
HONEYCOMB STITCH
A reminder of the hardworking bee and promises a just reward for honest labour.
BLACKBERRY STITCH
The Blackberry stitch represents nature. It is also called the Trinity stitch and it holds religious significance.
