All of these projects reinvigorated essential elements of the City’s past and have become key pieces of the City’s fabric and future.

That fabric continues to expand and strengthen thanks to the development of new landmarks like the Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons, the Palladium Office Building and the Deer District. These developments showcase the City’s evolution, vitality, and opportunities. n January, national truck and trailer rental company U-Haul issued a list of the top 25 U.S. growth cities, calculated by the net gain of one-way rental trucks entering a city versus leaving that city in 2020.

Milwaukee came in 13th.

A few months later, LinkedIn’s Economic Graph team named the 10 U.S. metro areas that are making the most net population gains.

Milwaukee was 7th.

For a region that has been experiencing mostly flat population growth in recent years, this was perhaps surprising – and certainly welcome – news. And while there may be many different reasons why people chose to move here during the COVID-19 pandemic, this much is clear: • We want them to stay.

• For those who came here to work remotely for an out-of-town company, we want them to know all about the opportunities that are available with our Milwaukee Region employers.

• And we need more of them.

Connecting our current residents with opportunities is job No. 1.

MMAC has long been involved in this work and is more engaged today than ever before, through the Region of Choice initiative, planning the next generation of career-based learning

experiences for students and several other strategic priorities. Our recent M7 Forum event focused on taking a more inclusive approach to economic development, and you can read more about this beginning on page 30 of this issue.

But this can’t be an either/ or proposition. As we work to ensure more opportunities for our residents to thrive, even a cursory look at our long-term demographic trends tells us that we must also recruit even more talented employees to the Milwaukee Region from outside our market. Bitcoin and Blockchain: Five basic facts Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are among the most revolutionary trends in the financial world. Now, over a decade into its development, “crypto” has taken a toehold on the market—even in areas where consumers and businesses alike are seeing its effects.

add 12-13% to your overall purchase price. Plus, cryptocurrency’s value and security can fluctuate wildly. This is why most businesses are waiting for the technology to become more standardized, faster and refined.

Today, the number of crypto wallet users (those who own a cache of cryptocurrency) has risen to over 70 million— with Bitcoin boasting more than 13 million active holders.

It’s also worth noting that the IRS sees cryptocurrency as an investment. When you buy something with it, they see it as selling an asset, leading to large capital gains tax implications and possibly an unpleasant surprise at tax time.

So how does cryptocurrency work? Here are five basic facts: 1. It’s borderless.

Most currency is backed by governments. The dollar, for example, is backed by the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States. The euro is backed by the European Central Bank.

Bitcoin, on the other hand, is peer-to-peer “digital money” transacted through a technology called blockchain, a kind of digital ledger which logs each unit and shows ownership.

2. It’s made of data, rather than gold or silver.

While there are some “souvenir” coins that represent cryptocurrency—such as ones depicting Dogecoin’s beloved Shiba Inu—the currency’s all digital.

3. Yes, you can buy things with it.

Bitcoin is built for a digital world. Companies making forays into cryptocurrency payments now include Tesla, Amazon, PayPal, and Mastercard, among others.

However, conversion is still inefficient—and can

In fact, there are thousands: Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, NEO, IOTA …. and the list keeps growing. They vary in architecture, developers and uses, but they’re still all digitally based.

5. You can’t get it through your bank—yet.

Currently, there are three ways to get bitcoins: buy them on an exchange like Robinhood, accept them as payment for goods and services, and, with the right combination of know-how and powerful computing, you can “mine” new ones. However, it’s still a risk that many financial institutions are unwilling to take.

Cryptocurrency represents a quickly changing—and often controversial—way that money is handled. “Technologies do evolve over time,” say Associated Bank’s Samuel Jacobsen, “but I think of how much of the mainstreaming that we’re seeing is perhaps opportunism, versus an actual evolution of what cryptocurrency is or could become. It really remains to be seen.”

hen even your ballroom dance class is filled with computer scientists and engineers, you know you’re living someplace unique.

After participating in a “Dancing With the Stars”style charity event a few years ago, Dr. Kristina Ropella got hooked. So she signed up for dance lessons. At the studio, she found a group of people that wouldn’t seem particularly out of place in her day job as dean of Marquette’s Opus College of Engineering.

“There are people in the studio from Harley, from Rexnord, from JCI – all kinds of people who come to enjoy something different,” Ropella says. “It’s our tech scene coming together around things that aren’t normally considered tech.”

Dr. Eric Baumgartner, Executive Vice President of Academics at Milwaukee School of Engineering, moved to Milwaukee four years ago. He and his wife quickly came to appreciate how all forms of creating are valued here.

“It’s not just the culture of people who are interested in designing and building things,” he says. “It’s also the surrounding culture of the Milwaukee community, which my wife and I have really fallen in love with. The making of music, the making of art, performance theater, that’s so strong here as well, which to me sort of rounds out not just the focus on the technical, but focus on the fine arts as well. It makes it a great place to live, and not so big that you can’t have an impact in the community.”

exploration programs – he actually drove the Opportunity rover on the surface of Mars – and moved to MSOE after a stint as the dean of an engineering college in Ohio.

Then came something unexpected: Their older daughter moved here, too, for a job at Komatsu.

“She came here to visit a couple of times and sort of fell in love with the city and decided to move here permanently,” Baumgartner says. “We never expected that, so that’s been fun.

Another example of a person who saw the opportunities here and loved the culture and the community.”

And then their younger daughter moved here for a job at Medline Industries. “We’ve been a net importer of talent,” he jokes.

The same is true of his institution.

Approximately 60% of MSOE students come from Wisconsin – and 75% stay here to work after graduation, meaning that many of the students who came here from out of state end up staying.

“They’re seeing that opportunity that’s in front of them right here in Southeast Wisconsin,” he says. continued on page 12

continued from page 9 And a move to Milwaukee means other opportunities you can’t find on the coasts: A house in a cool neighborhood that you could never afford there, a reservation at a cool independently owned restaurant and tickets to whatever festival is happening at the lakefront this weekend.

“We called it ‘reverse sticker shock,’” says Baumgartner, who lived in Southern California during his time at NASA. “We were shocked at how little things cost.”

You’ll hear similar stories of placement success at the rest of our universities, colleges and technical colleges. And even with higher education feeding the pipeline, we still need more.

“There’s definitely a need for more engineers -and engineers with different skill sets,” Ropella says. “Computing, digital is playing a much bigger role in all areas of technology, whether it’s manufacturing, water technology, power distribution or medical devices. In terms of what we’re doing to prepare engineers, that’s changing too. We need engineers with a more innovative mindset, a more entrepreneurial mindset, engineers with more business acumen than we’ve had in the past. We’re

redefining what engineering work is for the future.”

And with so many like-minded companies in one place, the opportunity to advance more quickly is a pronounced advantage for Milwaukee-area engineers and technology pros.

“If you’ve been at one company, and you feel like, ‘OK, I’ve kind of done what I can here, I want to look at other options,’ you have plenty of companies to choose from,” Ropella says. “You can move

around. That’s not true of all cities, where you might have one major employer.”

What’s next?

Milwaukee’s future is bright. But just as our companies need enthusiastic problem solvers, the region needs that same spirit to reach our full potential.

“I love Milwaukee,” Ropella says.

“I want it to continue to grow and change and develop and be a place that people speak of highly in this country. I think we have all the right ingredients, and it’s a matter of us deciding what makes us unique, and where do we invest in things that make us unique from other cities?”

Opportunities for Milwaukee include growing our capacity as a national leader in the transformation to digital manufacturing and automation, and taking advantage of the current national emphasis on re-shoring critical supply chain elements in the wake of shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ropella once worked for noted Milwaukee industrialist and philanthropist Michael Cudahy. She recalls him saying that if Milwaukee loses its manufacturing and is left only with service industry work, we’re in big trouble.

“And I think that’s right,” Ropella says.

“We’re primed now. COVID has made it clear that we can’t always rely on things being done overseas, and we need to bring some things back. I think Milwaukee is a good place to do that, for lots of different reasons.”

Challenges include growing our work force to meet industry demands, growing our culture of entrepreneurship -- and making sure that our community of people who

enjoy designing and making things becomes more diverse and inclusive.

“I think there will be a continual shortage of workers,” Baumgartner says. “Demographics are pointing towards that. So I think part of the future success of manufacturing includes automation. It’s going to include a strong focus on automation that minimizes repetitive tasks, more menial work, and really becomes the backbone of the manufacturing environment.

“How do we capitalize on the major manufacturing firms that are here in our backyard?,” says Nwagbaraocha, who serves as president of the Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Minority Contractors.

“We have some great entrepreneurs, we have some great diverse businesses. That’s one thing that we’re working hand in hand to see how we can really capitalize and have that flourish into a great ecosystem of manufacturing expertise and workforce development. And how

Certainly companies like Rockwell Automation and ABB Robotics are right in the middle of all that. I think it’s going to be a balancing act of embracing robotic manufacturing technologies as well as bringing in talent that can help advance the productivity and efficiency of the systems through automation and robotics.”

do we translate that into some of our inner city communities? That’s one thing that we’ve been working directly on, and having some great conversations.”

When Nwagbaraocha takes his daughters to events at Fiserv Forum, he delights in pointing out to them that the reason their phones still work inside the building is because of networking infrastructure that was installed by an AfricanAmerican, female-owned business.

“Milwaukee is just really on the verge in so many ways,” Nwagbaraocha says. “We’re doing so many things right. There’s so much excitement – in what we’re doing right now, and the potential of what we can do. I think we can be the epitome of what a city should be across the board, and have opportunities to be a globally leading city in a lot of areas.”

He’d love to have more stories like that to tell.

Nwagbaraocha wants to leave an even better Milwaukee for the next generation – then watch them take it to the next level.

And unique offsite venues continue to open and expand across the city, even throughout the pandemic. historic concert hall that was dressed up in over $100 million in renovations, and in just a few months, Milwaukee’s fifth food hall, 3rd Street Market Hall, will open across the street from the Bradley Symphony Center, bringing over 20 local food vendors to the heart of downtown. Our streetcar, The Hop, is set to be expanded from downtown into the neighborhoods, which will better connect locals and visitors alike. Our permanent festival grounds, home to Summerfest, the world’s largest outdoor music festival and a host of ethnic festivals that celebrate our diverse residents, have recently received over $50 million in upgrades. And as one of the developments I’m most excited for, the greatly expanded America’s Black Holocaust Museum is set to re-open this summer in the heart of our Bronzeville neighborhood, to teach our community and all who visit it about the harmful legacies of slavery. All of these, and more, provide space for our residents and visitors to learn, explore, and connect.

A

ccording to some translations, the name “Milwaukee” means “the gathering place by the waters.” That rings true—Milwaukee is certainly blessed with extensive water resources, especially its waterfront on Lake Michigan, part of the largest source of freshwater in the world. The city’s occupants also enjoy many hundreds of river miles and an ample groundwater supply. Local businesses, city government, and academic organizations have worked together to develop and steward these resources, making Milwaukee a “water-centric city.” As a result, the city has become well known as a leader in water technology, water research, and water law and policy. Given these inherent advantages, the coming decades are likely to make Milwaukee even more of a “gathering place,” as increasingly dire water shortages develop in other places due to overuse and climate change.

A growing business cluster.

The Brookings Institute recently called Milwaukee “an undisputed global water hub.”

Water has long played a key role in the city’s economy. Its strength in water technology is built on its history as a center for water-dependent industries—breweries, tanneries, and heavy manufacturing. While some of those industries remain important, today, the city has leveraged its hard-earned expertise to reinvent itself as a leader in water technology.

By some estimates, the region’s water industry now supports over 20,000 jobs as part of a $10.5 billion market ecosystem composed of hundreds of water sector businesses and organizations.

With sustainability and corporate social responsibility taking center stage for many companies, water has moved to the forefront of everyday business considerations. Its water advantages—both in natural resources and in human resources—make Milwaukee well-positioned to succeed in an increasingly water-stressed world. Today’s corporate

These business initiatives have been encouraged by the city’s government. The city established an Environmental Collaboration Office striving to meet the many challenges associated with becoming a true water-centric city, from arts and culture, to industry and academic partnerships, to ensuring a sustainable and healthy water supply for all. The city is working to develop innovative solutions and new sources of funding to address the challenge of lead service lines, an acknowledged problem in many older cities. A unique non-governmental organization, The Water Council, also works to align the region’s water organizations with the goal of furthering Milwaukee’s status as an international hub for solving the world’s water problems through technology and policy research solutions.

Opportunities for recreation and learning.

The same water resources that provide an engine for Milwaukee business and industry also sustain a vibrant culture of recreation and higher education for the region’s citizens. Recreational opportunities abound, whether fishing, boating, swimming, or simply taking in a beautiful waterfront view. Milwaukee’s many parks, museums, and entertainment venues dot the beautiful open spaces on the lakefront. And the city is home to some of the world’s most innovative water-centric academic programs, at Marquette University (water engineering and water law and policy), the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (water science and water policy), and other local institutions of higher learning. This provides a talent pipeline to fuel the water cluster.

Because Milwaukee’s leadership extends to water stewardship, not just water technology, it is well positioned to preserve its vast water resources in good condition for future generations. This will help ensure that Milwaukee lives up to its name as a “gathering place by the waters.”

Why ‘back to normal’ isn’t good enough M7 Forum focuses on inclusive approaches to economic development

s the chaos and disruption of 2020 fades, the idea of returning to normal can be comforting. But as several speakers in this year’s Milwaukee 7 Development Partnership forum made clear, that’s not the case for everyone.

“If you continue to pursue the Region of Choice initiative, it will obviously expand internal hiring networks, improve strategy and product development and management decisions, and groom a new generation of civic leaders in the region.”

“As the economy reopens and everyone’s getting vaccinated, it’s important to resist the temptation to return to normal,” said Amy Liu, vice president and director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings. “The pre-COVID economy simply was not working for most people or most places.”

With a theme of “The Great Reset,” this year’s forum challenged the Milwaukee Region’s business community to take a more inclusive approach to economic development. In her keynote address, Liu laid out a framework for equitable economic growth and showed how it could apply in Milwaukee.

wages and narrowing income inequalities over the past decade, according to Brookings research. And Liu was bullish on MMAC’s Region of Choice initiative, a pledge launched in 2019 to increase overall Black and Hispanic/ Latino employment by 15 percent, and management-level representation by 25 percent, by 2025. The ROC initiative has since expanded to include pathway goals in education and supply chain diversity, and to date 112 employers representing approximately 150,000 employees have signed on.

“If you continue to pursue the Region of Choice initiative, it will obviously expand

internal hiring networks, improve strategy and product development and management decisions, and groom a new generation of civic leaders in the region,” Liu said.

Added Milwaukee Commissioner of City Development Lafayette Crump, “The MMAC Region of Choice initiative is a wonderful start. Because it’s not just the pledge. It also demands monitoring, reporting and accountability. And that must spread to all areas of economic life.”

2. Pursuing a holistic agenda of quality jobs, skilled employees and connected places: Liu noted a tech industry cluster in Brimingham, Ala. that uses community residents as advisors on the development of new products, and a Cincinnati minority business collaborative that emphasizes growth of diverse-owned midsize businesses.

According to Liu, negatives for our region include lagging job growth, and segregation that remains “hard-wired” into our region.

3. Building institutional capacity to fill gaps: In Portland, a new community investment trust is allowing residents to “buy back your block” by investing.

Crump called for a region-wide approach to a “new and improved” normal.

Brookings has proposed multibillion-dollar federal grants to create 18 regional “growth hubs” to emphasize innovation away from the coasts, an idea that may be gaining traction – and could be a critical opportunity for Milwaukee.

“This is it,” he said. “This is our big, generational, course of history changing opportunity. To make Milwaukee an example of real equity. An example that can be exported and impact the entire country.”

As an example of systemic racism holding the Milwaukee Region back from reaching its full potential, Crump noted that homes in traditionally Black Milwaukee neighborhoods are consistently undervalued. Crump said this creates a vicious cycle, given the role that property taxes play in funding schools and the disparities that result.

“None of us can do this alone,” Crump said. “Whether it’s housing, education, employment, you name it, if we want to see sustained equitable progress in our region, we have to all be committed to the same outcome: A Milwaukee Region that works for everyone.”

Crump echoed Liu’s assertion that equity initiatives are not a zero-sum game – everyone benefits.

“We can either have more people contributing at higher levels to our tax base, improving education and income, or we can have more people who feel excluded for the system and act accordingly,” Crump said.

Liu cited three key concepts, and several examples from other regions, to show what Milwaukee’s path forward might look like: 1. Setting ambitious goals: The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. set what Liu called three “big, hairy” goals for 2030, including 20,000 new skilled workers, 50,000 quality jobs in small businesses and

startups, and 75,000 newly thriving households.

“You have a set of really strong industry clusters,” Liu said.

“If you invest in those industry clusters in an equitable way intentionally, it will increase the chances of this region being one of the top candidates.”

So what’s stopping us?

“Absolutely nothing, but the collective will to do it,” Crump said.

“This is our big, generational, course of history changing opportunity. To make Milwaukee an example of real equity. An example that can be exported and impact the entire country."

“They were seen as a source of truth and stability during a time when other institutions were either inaccessible, or seen as unreliable, or flat-out untrustworthy,” said Rebekah Kowalski, Vice President, Manpower Manufacturing at ManpowerGroup. “The ability to lead in crisis with empathy and inclusion took on greater emphasis than ever before.”

And that’s just one of the challenges that employers are adjusting to. Existing trends in diversity equity and inclusion, environmental and social corporate governance, digitization and demographics hit warp speed. It may take years to understand all the ways that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted our employees and our workplaces. Today’s companies don’t have that long to adapt.

“The rise in remote working is something we’ve been tracking for several years as part of our ‘What workers want’ research, but the burden of proof on productivity always kept it from becoming as much of a force as it could be,” said Kowalski, “and that was largely swept aside as COVID forced a reckoning with virtual work. Flexibility is here to stay.”

Kowalski laid out several other

trends that employers should prepare for: • The role that digital delivery played in every industry, from medicine to education, isn’t going away and will require employees to learn new skills and achieve new certifications.

• Artificial Intelligence, mixed reality and use of multiple digital devices will become a normal part of the modern workplace.

• As the “consumerization of

work” continues, employers should be prepared to meet employee requests in areas such as diversity and sustainability.

Above all, businesses will need to remain agile to thrive.

Ultimately, Kowalski said, businesses are moving toward net zero employment – increasingly using automation to fill low-skill roles, and reskilling the employees who used to fill those roles to take on tasks of greater value to themselves and the company.

“That’s really treating talent as the ultimate renewable resource,” Kowalski said.

The rate of disruption can be dizzying for even the most responsive employers.

“The opportunity that I’ve seen through the pandemic is the relationships and the partnerships,” said Chytania Brown, President and CEO of Employ Milwaukee. “Everyone has really seen the need to knock on each other’s doors and have this opportunity to talk to one another.”

Added Dr. Morna Foy, President of the Wisconsin Technical College System: “Most of the jobs being created in Southeast Wisconsin and across the state require education beyond high school.

We need to get more adults in this state on that lifelong learning pathway.”

Rashi Arora Khosla, President and CEO at MARS Solutions Group, sees opportunity for the Milwaukee Region amid continued digital disruption.

“This is our time,” she said.

“Because the Midwest, of any other region, has that knowledge of physically engineered products. Since the physical world is meeting the digital world, we’re able to take all of that learning and apply some of the digital transformation to it.”

ne breakout session at the M7 Economic Development Forum tackled the uncertainty COVID-19 introduced into the complicated decisions companies are making on expansion or relocation projects. M7 Executive Director and Senior Vice President of Corporate Expansion and Relocation Jim Paetsch discussed factors causing executives to rethink their global investments with Brad Migdal, Senior Managing Director for Cushman and Wakefield's site selection practice, and Jason Hickey, President and CEO of global location advisory firm Hickey and Associates.

Below are excerpts from their conversation.

PAETSCH: Are you expecting companies will continue to be flexible on where their employees work from?

HICKEY: COVID created this opportunity for companies to tap into people that live in Oshkosh or Green Bay that normally wouldn't be considered from a commuting standpoint.

Of course, there are certain industries that need to be in the office but in many others, we are going to see a hybrid effect for a long time.

And there still needs to be a center of gravity where the main office is located. Milwaukee will be that for a much larger catchment that could go two to three hours normal

commuting lengths around the city. That is a big opportunity for the region.

PAETSCH: What about supply chain disruption? Are there opportunities for things manufactured in other parts of the world to come back to the U.S. - particularly the Midwest?

MIGDAL: If you look at the trends today, demand is outpacing supply. Wisconsin is in a unique position as one of the great leaders in manufacturing in the last 75 years. In the Milwaukee Region, you have the generational talent for manufacturing. The people of Southeastern Wisconsin know how to work with engineering, machinery and equipment.

Wisconsin needs to have the capability to handle more demand and leverage that talent.

PAETSCH: How are companies understanding where risks might come from?

HICKEY: Since last April, certain communities between Milwaukee and Madison have seen double-digit increases in the population through migration. Our data team is paying close attention to this because these highly skilled workers rented a home, their kids make friends, and they really start to like where they are. pool of companies to pick from in the not-too-distant future.

For most operations, 80% of their annual costs are labor. Wage inflation is about to go up in many sectors.

While there has not been a lot of attrition because people are nervous about going from one company to another, the flood gates are about to open.

Forecasting and predictive analysis are crucial, and the M7 team does that for your members and the interested parties in the region. If you can plan for it, you can mitigate those risks with hopefully as little cost profile as possible.

Over the long term, Milwaukee is one of only 12 cities in the U.S. that has seen significant project announcements - real investment, real development - and we're still in the pandemic.

Most U.S. cities are not getting the opportunities we're still seeing here today. That is exciting and companies are noticing. It puts Milwaukee on the map in ways it never was in the past.

MIGDAL: The challenge is we won't know what the economy is going to look like for another three, four or maybe even six months. The one thing that I can say about Americans is that we have short-term memory. I recall on September 12, 2001, we thought no one would ever go back to Manhattan.

But look what New York turned into post 9/11. I just don't see the big urban cities going away.

Partnership with the university system for economic development is going to be critical moving forward. A huge number of talented people are graduating from Wisconsin and want to make it their home. It is essential to keep those people stay by providing great jobs.

PAETSCH: What are you hearing from your clients in terms of labor demands?

MIGDAL: M7's biggest challenge is going to be population. There has been growth, but the region needs to sustain long-term population growth.

Lots of people moved around during the pandemic – to warmer climates, but we also saw people moving to Boise, Idaho, or Salt Lake City for quality of place.

(Given) the popularity and increasing trend in electric vehicles, electrical engineers are critical. The Milwaukee School of Engineering and UWMadison have great engineering programs. Understanding what skill sets are needed is vital and should drive collaboration between the business community and educational institutions in creating specialized programs.

PAETSCH: What should a prosperous region, that is advancing economically, focus on over the next five years?

HICKEY: They need to understand what is important to every part of their ecosystem. How do the biggest companies support entrepreneurial startups in the region? How do you innovate around your supply chain? How does every educational institution find 100 percent local job placement for graduates?

Also, focus on FDI attraction. The pandemic slowed it to a trickle, but that dam will break, and then there's going to be a flood starting in the fall next year. Milwaukee needs to be ready to answer some of the questions that we have discussed today. If the region is prepared to discuss those things, it'll be significantly successful in the future.

How is your company managing digital disruption during a labor crunch?

For all of the pain and anxiety it caused, the COVID-19 pandemic also showed our capacity to incorporate digital technology faster than we ever thought possible. This digital acceleration continues during the reset – and employers must grapple with all the disruption in the middle of an unprecedented labor crunch.

Can we upskill on the fly as quickly as COVID forced us to go digital?

“What really came at us during the pandemic was the rapid need to adopt, and our customers’ willingness to adopt, which really moved us much, much faster,” said Cathy Jacobson, CEO of Froedert. “We estimate that it really moved us ahead by a few years in terms of the adoption curve.”

With upstart digital health competitors nipping at their heels, Froedert is rethinking roles for both technology and people. An example: Customers are more comfortable with online appointment scheduling than ever before, and many would prefer not to do so over the phone any more. So Froedert is increasing online resources for basic appointment scheduling, then reskilling employees who used to fill that role to take on more complex tasks, such as helping customers who have issues.

“We have to be able to take advantage of technology, and then upskill those people into other skills,” said Jacobson, who will take over as Chair of the MMAC’s Board of Directors this fall.

Froedert Chief Operating Officer Richelle Webb Dixon added that the hospital will always serve its traditional role for critically ill people. But, she asks, “How do we partner that with technology to help you stay well?”

How well a company links its digital and human experiences will go a long way toward determining its future success.

“Everything is being digitized, but not everything is being linked,” said Dr. Craig Fleisher, Chief Analytics Officer for Aurora WDC. “Those who can make the transformation to provide these links and connections within viable networks and ecosystems will be ahead of the race.”

The same is true in manufacturing. Bill Berrien, CEO of Pindel Global Precision, said pandemicrelated slowdowns in some aspects of his company’s

manufacturing allowed him to reskill some workers and incorporate automation to make the company more efficient while allowing workers to increase their skills – and their salaries.

“We put our foot on the gas even more, and we realized that where talent is hard to come by here in 2021, where hiring additional to grow the team is tough, we need to continue to accelerate that push in implementing automation,” Berrien said. “With that comes the need and opportunity to upskill a team, to pay them more, and to grow that professional path.”

Then came an even bigger idea: PRODx, a consortium of companies that can use their collective excess manufacturing capacity to quickly respond to what Berrien calls “hair on fire” requests for new products – a need that was laid painfully bare during the pandemic, and remains in high demand today.

“We realized in 2020 that there is a shared economy opportunity for advanced manufacturing, and we innovated a little bit and created a network of Pindel peer companies throughout the country – hypercapable, hyper-qualified, who might have excess capacity,” he said.

Todd McLees, Principal at Full Circle Innovation, wants companies to change the conversation around automation.

“As we automate tasks, whether that be customerfacing roles or simple mundane management tasks, and we take hundreds or thousands of hours out of the human effort and we rely on machines to do that work, now we have to help people understand how they can provide more leverage and help the company increase capacity,” he said. “If instead of framing this in such a negative way – ‘if I don’t get upskilled, I will lose my job, or I’ll make less money than I could’ – to put this in a positive light, turn it 180 degrees and talk about all of the amazing opportunities that we have to unleash our own human potential moving forward, that’s the way that we can have the right conversation with our teams.”

The Milwaukee County Zoo is a serene home to more than 2,100 mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles. Recognized as one of the country’s finest zoological attractions, the Milwaukee County Zoo serves as a resource to educate, entertain and inspire its nearly one million visitors each year. In 2019 the Zoo opened its new state-of-the-art elephant habitat.

Milwaukee is the only Zoo within a six-hour drive that houses elephants. In 2020, Milwaukee became one of 12 zoos in North America with a viewing of hippos underwater.
