Litchfield’s landscape paintings are kaleidoscopic prisms through which to explore natural and manmade environments, evolutionary cycles of cities and forests, networks of rivers and roadways, and patterns of fertility and decay. Her recent works are all part of three distinct series, and remain deeply rooted in – and visually connected to – these central themes. In the first ongoing series, trees and tall buildings beautifully tangle and share space amid sprawling roots, shafts of flickering sunlight, and colorful canopies of shade. These hybrid habitats embrace a powerful sense of verticality and give the viewer a welcome feeling of being immersed in her surroundings. It’s as though the viewer is within and among these elements, bearing witness to a very special kind of symbiotic growth. Through these paintings, Litchfield suggests that the systems of the forest and those of our urban centers might be more related than we realize. Dazzling, disorienting aerial views of the coast or countryside comprise Litchfield’s second series, where hills roll, streets twist and turn, and houses, factories, and fields feel as though they might fall right off the canvas. Like their forest/city counterparts, these images subtly hint at Litchfield’s affinity for the mark-making and compositional sensibilities of David Hockney and Wayne Thiebaud, but these paintings, in particular, swirl, swell, spill, sprawl, and tumble to unprecedented degrees. They offer up dizzying and distorted bird’s-eye views, replace traditional grids with more chaotic organizational frameworks, and make the land below appear to pulsate with energy. Litchfield’s layered paintings of Rome are part of her third ongoing series. These images of excavations are stratified like the Eternal City itself, where ancient artifacts, present-day realities, and imagined futures coexist. They juxtapose in abstract ways the archways, forums, and cobble-stoned infrastructures of the past with those of the modern world, collapse time and place, and like all Litchfield artworks, leave room for viewers to ruminate what might come next. To create these ersatz topographies, Litchfield finds inspiration in a variety of visual sources: art historical paintings (fig. 2), real and fictive pictorial maps (fig. 1), descriptions of mythological cities, and personal photos from her hikes through local landscapes or travels across the globe. She extracts details from these original images and through techniques of cutting, collaging, illustrating, scanning, and ultimately painting – she compiles entirely new wholes from once disparate parts. Throughout the process, Litchfield plays with unexpected perspectives, toys with scale, and amplifies unsung moments with her saturated and intoxicating color-rich pallete. The final
