note from the team There is much to be frightened of in the world. At any given moment something catastrophic could happen to us. Every day lives around the world are threatened by violence and cruelty. How do we cope? Do we just ignore the fact that human trafficking, terrorism, war, abuse, and mass shootings are all a part of our reality? Or do we hunker down in our homes for fear of encountering the horrible atrocities we see on the news? I think we have to go about our lives somewhere in between those two extremes. Confronting the terror, but not allowing it to consume us. Big Guns invites us to encounter our worst fears in the “safe space” of theatre, which starts to feel less safe and more pregnant with the potential for atrocity. And while there is much to be afraid of in the outside world, perhaps the greatest fear should be of ourselves–the potential for every one of us to be the cause of harm for another. While there is so much we cannot control that makes us scared, there are things we can control. We can do our best to not be the source of fear for others. We can say no to internet trolling. We can not click on that sketchy video that may or may not exploit a human person for the sake of attracting more viewers. We can choose to treat one another with humanity and compassion. We can make the choice to sit and encounter people, we can choose to be in community with others rather than isolate and disconnect from one another. We have the power to make the world less scary. The question that remains is, will we use it?

These homelands reside along the southwest shores of Michigami, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes. We honor with gratitude the land itself, and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place—alive and strong, and this calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit as well.
