Paule Maurice (1910-1967)

Bernhard Heiden (1910-2000)

program notes Paule Maurice is a little-acknowledged French composer from the 20th century. She was a respected professor at the Paris Conservatory, but many of her manuscripts are nowhere to be found, leaving her life largely in anonymity. Her most well known composition, written for Maurice Mule, is Tableaux de Provence which is a programmatic suite that describes the southwest corner of France. Each movement evokes different aspects of Provence, from their traditional round dance -- farandole-- to the nostalgia and sadness of the region by the sea. Bernhard Heiden is a German-American composer from the 20th century who studied composition under Paul Hindemith. He began studying music theory at a very young age and also learned multiple instruments. His composition, Sonata for Eb Saxophone and Piano, is one of the first and most important pieces for saxophone and piano. Heiden was not acquainted with saxophone literature before writing this Sonata, but he was very close with musician Larry Teal, for whom the piece was written.

thank you This recital would not be possible without the overwhelming support of the music faculty members Dr. Ripley and Professor Andrew Carpenter. They have provided me with many opportunities and have been key in my growth as a musician. Fumi Nakayama has been my accompanist for all four years at Carthage and has always displayed the utmost professionalism every time I have worked with her. My partner, Morgan Taylor, has done so much to assist me with the logistics of putting this recital together and she is the reason I wake up in the morning. Birdman has been really nice to me recently. To all of these individuals, with all of my heart, thank you.
